Karika 23
अध्यवसायो बुद्धिर्धर्मो ज्ञानं विराग ऐश्वर्यम्। सात्त्विकमेतद्रूपं तामसमस्माद्विपर्यस्तम् ॥२३॥
The determination or perseverance is intelligence (buddhi). Dharma, knowledge, dispassion, and wealth are its manifestations when saatwik quality is dominant. Reverse is true when tamasik quality dominates.
It is important to note the term 'mahat' is also termed as 'buddhi' in ancient Sanskrit sankhya literature. In Mahabharata the term mahan and buddhi are used as synonyms while describing sankhya philosophy. Thus, are the following attributes of Mahat?
Sātta intelligence = righteous (dharma), knowledge, dispassion, and wealth
Tāmasa intelligence = unrighteous (adharma), ignorance, passion, and destitute
