Vaisesika Sūtra 1.1.18

द्रव्यगुणकर्मणां द्रव्यं कारणं सामान्यम् ॥१८॥

dravyaguṇakarmaṇāṁ dravyaṁ kāraṇaṁ sāmānyam ॥18॥

[द्रव्य गुण कर्मणां द्रव्यं कारणं सामान्यम्॥
dravya = substance; guṇa = qualities; karmaṇāṁ = action; dravyaṁ = substance; kāraṇaṁ = cause; sāmānyam = is generality;॥]

The substance is the general cause, i.e. generality, of substance, qualities, and actions.

ॐ असतो मा सद्गमय। तमसो मा ज्योतिर्गमय। मृत्योर्माऽमृतं गमय। ॐ शान्ति: शान्ति: शान्ति: ॥ - बृहदारण्यकोपनिषद् 1.3.28
