Yōga Sūtras

Yōga Sūtra 2.19

विशेषाविशेषलिङ्गमात्रालिङ्गानि गुणपर्वाणि।

viśēṣāviśēṣaliṅgamātrāliṅgāni guṇaparvāṇi।

[विशेष अविशेष लिङ्ग मात्र अलिङ्गानि गुण पर्वाणि।
viśēṣa = special; aviśēṣa = not so special; liṅga mātra = form with gender only; aliṅgāni = forms without gender; guṇa = of the qualities; parvāṇi = variation in proportions;]

The variation in proportions of qualities results in (experiences) that are special, not so special, forms with gender and those without gender.

Again, here qualities refer to satva, rajas and tamas qualities in its various proportions.
