Chapter 12: Pāṇḍu seeks heirs; Kuntī bears Yudhiṣṭhira, Bhīma and Arjuna, while Mādrī bears Nakula and Sahadeva by invoking deities.
Pāṇḍu’s childlessness, ancestral debt, and search for a means to obtain offspring.

pūrvapūrvatamābhāvē matvā lipsēta vai sutam । uttamādavarāḥ puṁsaḥ kāṅkṣantē putramāpadi ॥BORI: 1-111-30॥
In the absence of each preceding kind, one should consider the matter and seek to obtain a son; men inferior to the best seek a son in times of adversity. (BORI: 1-111-30)
