vidyā tapaś ca dānaṁ ca kim eteṣāṁ viśiṣyate। pṛcchāmi tvā satāṁ śreṣṭha tan me brūhi pitāmaha॥13-121-1॥

Knowledge, austerity, and charity—which among these is the best? I ask you, O best of the virtuous; tell that to me, O Grandfather. (13-121-1)

तमुपस्थितमासीनं ज्ञात्वा स मुनिसत्तमम्। अर्चित्वा भोजयामास मैत्रेयोऽशनमुत्तमम् ॥१३-१२१-४॥

Having perceived that the best of sages had arrived and was seated, Maitreya worshipped him and then offered him excellent food. (13-121-4)
तदन्नमुत्तमं भुक्त्वा गुणवत्सार्वकामिकम्। प्रतिष्ठमानोऽस्मयत प्रीतः कृष्णो महामनाः ॥१३-१२१-५॥
tadannam uttamaṃ bhuktvā guṇavat sārvakāmikam। pratiṣṭhamānaḥ asmayata prītaḥ kṛṣṇaḥ mahāmanāḥ ॥13-121-5॥

Having eaten that excellent and virtuous food which fulfills all desires, Kṛṣṇa, greatly pleased and honored, smiled with a great mind. (13-121-5)
तमुत्स्मयन्तं सम्प्रेक्ष्य मैत्रेयः कृष्णमब्रवीत्। कारणं ब्रूहि धर्मात्मन्योऽस्मयिष्ठाः कुतश्च ते ॥ तपस्विनो धृतिमतः प्रमोदः समुपागतः ॥१३-१२१-६॥
tam utsmayantaṃ samprekṣya maitreyaḥ kṛṣṇam abravīt। kāraṇaṃ brūhi dharmātman yo'smayiṣṭhāḥ kutaś ca te॥ tapasvino dhṛtimataḥ pramodaḥ samupāgataḥ॥13-121-6॥

(Him smiling having seen, Maitreya to Kṛṣṇa said. The reason tell, O virtuous one, who smiled, from where also for you? Ascetic steadfast's joy has arisen.)
Seeing him smiling, Maitreya said to Kṛṣṇa: "Tell the reason, O virtuous one—why have you smiled, and from where has this joy come to you, ascetic and steadfast?" (13-121-6)
एतत्पृच्छामि ते विद्वन्नभिवाद्य प्रणम्य च। आत्मनश्च तपोभाग्यं महाभाग्यं तथैव च ॥१३-१२१-७॥
etat pṛcchāmi te vidvan nibhivādya praṇamya ca। ātmanaś ca tapo-bhāgyaṃ mahā-bhāgyaṃ tathaiva ca॥13-121-7॥

(This I ask you, O wise one, after saluting and bowing; of yourself, and your merit from austerity, and your great fortune likewise.)
After saluting and bowing to you, O wise one, I ask you this: about your own merits of austerity and your great fortune as well. (13-121-7)
पृथगाचरतस्तात पृथगात्मनि चात्मनोः। अल्पान्तरमहं मन्ये विशिष्टमपि वा त्वया ॥१३-१२१-८॥
pṛthagācaratastāta pṛthagātmani cātmanoḥ। alpāntaramahaṃ manye viśiṣṭamapi vā tvayā ॥13-121-8॥

aticchedātivādābhyāṃ smayo'yaṃ samupāgataḥ। asatyaṃ vedavacanaṃ kasmād vedo'nṛtaṃ vadet ॥13-121-9॥

त्रीण्येव तु पदान्याहुः पुरुषस्योत्तमं व्रतम्। न द्रुह्येच्चैव दद्याच्च सत्यं चैव परं वदेत् ॥ इदानीं चैव नः कृत्यं पुरस्ताच्च परं स्मृतम् ॥१३-१२१-१०॥
trīṇyeva tu padānyāhuḥ puruṣasyottamaṃ vratam। na druhyec caiva dadyāc ca satyaṃ caiva paraṃ vadet॥ idānīṃ caiva naḥ kṛtyaṃ purastācca paraṃ smṛtam॥13-121-10॥

(Three indeed but principles they say—of a man, the highest vow: he should not wrong and indeed should give and indeed the supreme truth should speak. Now indeed our duty before and beyond is remembered. (13-121-10))
There are three principles, regarded as the highest vow of a man: he should not harm, he should give, and he should always speak the supreme truth. Now, our duty—both present and forthcoming—is understood thus. (13-121-10)
अल्पोऽपि तादृशो दायो भवत्युत महाफलः। तृषिताय च यद्दत्तं हृदयेनानसूयता ॥१३-१२१-११॥
alpo'pi tādṛśo dāyo bhavatyuta mahāphalaḥ। tṛṣitāya ca yaddattaṃ hṛdayenānasūyatā ॥13-121-11॥
[अल्पः (alpaḥ) - small; brief; अपि (api) - even; though; तादृशः (tādṛśaḥ) - such; of that kind; दायः (dāyaḥ) - gift; offering; भवति (bhavati) - becomes; is; उत (uta) - indeed; moreover; महाफलः (mahāphalaḥ) - of great fruit; great result; तृषिताय (tṛṣitāya) - to the thirsty; च (ca) - and; यत् (yat) - that which; what; दत्तं (dattaṃ) - is given; हृदयेना (hṛdayena) - with the heart; with feeling; अनसूयता (anasūyatā) - without envy; without spite;]
(Even a small such gift indeed becomes of great fruit; and that which is given to the thirsty with the heart, without envy.)
Even a small gift of such kind indeed brings great results; and whatever is given to the thirsty with heartfelt sincerity and without envy yields great benefit. (13-121-11)
तृषितस्तृषिताय त्वं दत्त्वैतदशनं मम। अजैषीर्महतो लोकान्महायज्ञैरिवाभिभो ॥ अतो दानपवित्रेण प्रीतोऽस्मि तपसैव च ॥१३-१२१-१२॥
tṛṣitastṛṣitāya tvaṃ dattvaitadaśanaṃ mama। ajaiṣīrmahato lokānmahāyajñairivābhibho ॥ ato dānapavitreṇa prīto'smi tapasaiva ca ॥13-121-12॥
[तृषितः (tṛṣitaḥ) - thirsty; तृषिताय (tṛṣitāya) - to the thirsty; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; दत्त्वा (dattvā) - having given; एतद् (etad) - this; अशनं (aśanam) - food; मम (mama) - to me; अजैषीः (ajaiṣīḥ) - you conquered; महतः (mahataḥ) - great; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; महायज्ञैः (mahāyajñaiḥ) - by great sacrifices; इव (iva) - like; अभिभो (abhibho) - O master; अतः (ataḥ) - therefore; दानपवित्रेण (dānapavitreṇa) - by the purity of gift; प्रीतः (prītaḥ) - pleased; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and;]
(Thirsty, to the thirsty, you, having given this food to me, you conquered great worlds like by great sacrifices, O master. Therefore, by the purity of gift I am pleased, and indeed by austerity.)
Being thirsty, you gave this food to me, who was thirsty; by this (act), O master, you have conquered great worlds just as by great sacrifices. Therefore, I am pleased by the purity of your gift, and indeed also by your austerity. (13-121-12)
पुण्यस्यैव हि ते गन्धः पुण्यस्यैव च दर्शनम्। पुण्यश्च वाति गन्धस्ते मन्ये कर्मविधानतः ॥१३-१२१-१३॥
puṇyasyaiva hi te gandhaḥ puṇyasyaiva ca darśanam। puṇyaś ca vāti gandhas te manye karma-vidhānataḥ॥13-121-13॥
[पुण्यस्य एव (puṇyasya eva) - of merit only; हि (hi) - indeed; ते (te) - your; गन्धः (gandhaḥ) - fragrance; पुण्यस्य एव (puṇyasya eva) - of merit only; च (ca) - and; दर्शनम् (darśanam) - vision; पुण्यः च (puṇyaḥ ca) - merit also; वाति (vāti) - wafts; गन्धः (gandhaḥ) - fragrance; ते (te) - your; मन्ए (manye) - I think; कर्मविधानतः (karma-vidhānataḥ) - from the ordaining of actions;]
(Of merit only indeed is your fragrance; of merit only also is your vision; merit also wafts your fragrance, I think, from the ordaining of actions.)
Truly, your fragrance is only due to merit; your appearance also is only due to merit. I think even the fragrance that comes from you is because of deeds arranged by destiny. (13-121-13)
अधिकं मार्जनात्तात तथैवाप्यनुलेपनात्। शुभं सर्वपवित्रेभ्यो दानमेव परं भवेत् ॥१३-१२१-१४॥
adhikaṁ mārjanāttāta tathaivāpyanulepanāt। śubhaṁ sarvapavitrebhyo dānameva paraṁ bhavet॥13-121-14॥
[अधिकं (adhikaṁ) - greater; मार्जनात् (mārjanāt) - than cleansing; तात (tāta) - O dear; तथैव (tathaiva) - likewise; अपि (api) - also; अनुलेपनात् (anulepanāt) - than smearing; शुभं (śubhaṁ) - auspicious; सर्वपवित्रेभ्यः (sarvapavitrebhyaḥ) - than all purifications; दानम् (dānam) - gift; एव (eva) - indeed; परम् (param) - supreme; भवेत् (bhavet) - shall be;]
(Greater than cleansing, O dear, likewise also than smearing, gift alone indeed shall be the supreme auspicious (act) than all purifications.)
O dear, giving a gift is indeed greater than cleansing, greater even than smearing with unguents; among all purifications, giving alone is the highest and most auspicious. (13-121-14)
यानीमान्युत्तमानीह वेदोक्तानि प्रशंससि। तेषां श्रेष्ठतमं दानमिति मे नास्ति संशयः ॥१३-१२१-१५॥
yānīmānyuttamānīha vedoktāni praśaṃsasi. teṣāṃ śreṣṭhatamaṃ dānamiti me nāsti saṃśayaḥ ॥13-121-15॥
[यानी (yāni) - which; (those things which;) इमानि (imāni) - these; (these things;) उत्तमानीह (uttamāni iha) - excellent here; (the best here;) वेदोक्तानि (vedoktāni) - said in the Vedas; (declared by the Vedas;) प्रशंससि (praśaṃsasi) - you praise; (you extol;) तेषां (teṣām) - of those; (among those;) श्रेष्ठतमं (śreṣṭhatamaṃ) - the most excellent; (the highest;) दानम् (dānam) - gift; (charity, donation;) इति (iti) - thus; (so;) मे (me) - to me; (I;) नास्ति (nāsti) - there is not; (there is no;) संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt; (uncertainty;);]
(Which, these excellent (deeds) here declared in the Vedas you praise; among those, the most excellent is gift, thus for me there is no doubt.)
Of these excellent acts here, which you praise as declared in the Vedas, among them the gift (charity) is the highest—about this I have no doubt. (13-121-15)
दानकृद्भिः कृतः पन्था येन यान्ति मनीषिणः। ते हि प्राणस्य दातारस्तेषु धर्मः प्रतिष्ठितः ॥१३-१२१-१६॥
dānakṛdbhiḥ kṛtaḥ panthā yena yānti manīṣiṇaḥ। te hi prāṇasya dātārasteṣu dharmaḥ pratiṣṭhitaḥ ॥13-121-16॥
[दानकृद्भिः (dānakṛdbhiḥ) - by those who perform giving; कृतः (kṛtaḥ) - made; पन्था (panthā) - path; येन (yena) - by which; यान्ति (yānti) - go; मनीषिणः (manīṣiṇaḥ) - the wise ones; ते (te) - they; हि (hi) - indeed; प्राणस्य (prāṇasya) - of life; दातारः (dātāraḥ) - givers; तेषु (teṣu) - in them; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - righteousness; प्रतिष्ठितः (pratiṣṭhitaḥ) - is established;]
(By those who perform giving, a path is made, by which go the wise. They indeed are the givers of life; in them, righteousness is established.)
The path made by those who give is followed by the wise. They are truly the givers of life; in them, righteousness is firmly established. (13-121-16)
यथा वेदाः स्वधीताश्च यथा चेन्द्रियसंयमः। सर्वत्यागो यथा चेह तथा दानमनुत्तमम् ॥१३-१२१-१७॥
yathā vedāḥ svadhītāś ca yathā ca indriya-saṃyamaḥ. sarva-tyāgaḥ yathā ca iha tathā dānam anuttamam ॥13-121-17॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; वेदाः (vedāḥ) - Vedas; स्वधीताः (svadhītāḥ) - well-studied; learned; च (ca) - and; यथा (yathā) - just as; च (ca) - and; इन्द्रियसंयमः (indriya-saṃyamaḥ) - restraint of the senses; सर्वत्यागः (sarva-tyāgaḥ) - complete renunciation; यथा (yathā) - just as; च (ca) - and; इह (iha) - here (in this world); तथा (tathā) - likewise; thus; दानम् (dānam) - giving; charity; अनुत्तमम् (anuttamam) - unsurpassed; excellent;]
(Just as the Vedas are well-studied, and just as the restraint of the senses, just as complete renunciation here, likewise, giving is unsurpassed.)
Just as the Vedas being well-studied, restraint of the senses, and complete renunciation here are considered supreme, so also is unsurpassed the act of giving. (13-121-17)
त्वं हि तात सुखादेव सुखमेष्यसि शोभनम्। सुखात्सुखतरप्राप्तिमाप्नुते मतिमान्नरः ॥१३-१२१-१८॥
tvaṁ hi tāta sukhādeva sukham eṣyasi śobhanam। sukhāt sukhatara-prāptim āpnute matimān naraḥ॥13-121-18॥
[त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; हि (hi) - indeed; तात (tāta) - dear one; सुखात् (sukhāt) - from happiness; एव (eva) - only; सुखम् (sukham) - happiness; एष्यसि (eṣyasi) - you will attain; शोभनम् (śobhanam) - excellent; सुखात् (sukhāt) - from happiness; सुखतरप्राप्तिम् (sukhatara-prāptim) - attainment of greater happiness; आप्नुते (āpnute) - obtains; मतिमान् (matimān) - intelligent; नरः (naraḥ) - man;]
(You indeed, dear one, from happiness only, will attain excellent happiness. From happiness, attainment of greater happiness obtains the intelligent man.)
Indeed, dear one, you will attain the best happiness from happiness alone. An intelligent man obtains even greater happiness from happiness. (13-121-18)
तन्नः प्रत्यक्षमेवेदमुपलब्धमसंशयम्। श्रीमन्तमाप्नुवन्त्यर्था दानं यज्ञस्तथा सुखम् ॥१३-१२१-१९॥
tan naḥ pratyakṣam eva idam upalabhdham asaṁśayam। śrīmantam āpnuvanti arthā dānam yajñaḥ tathā sukham ॥13-121-19॥
[तत् (tat) - that; नः (naḥ) - for us; प्रत्यक्षम् (pratyakṣam) - directly perceived; एव (eva) - indeed; इदम् (idam) - this; उपलब्धम् (upalabhdham) - ascertained; असंशयम् (asaṁśayam) - without doubt; श्रीमन्तम् (śrīmantam) - prosperous (person); आप्नुवन्ति (āpnuvanti) - attain; अर्थाः (arthāḥ) - wealths; दानम् (dānam) - gift; यज्ञः (yajñaḥ) - sacrifice; तथा (tathā) - likewise; सुखम् (sukham) - happiness;]
(That for us directly indeed this ascertained without doubt. Prosperous (person) attain wealths, gift, sacrifice likewise happiness.)
This is directly evident to us and ascertained without doubt: gifts, sacrifice, and happiness, as well as wealth, are attained by the prosperous. (13-121-19)
सुखादेव परं दुःखं दुःखादन्यत्परं सुखम्। दृश्यते हि महाप्राज्ञ नियतं वै स्वभावतः ॥१३-१२१-२०॥
sukhādeva paraṃ duḥkhaṃ duḥkhādanyatparaṃ sukham। dṛśyate hi mahāprājña niyataṃ vai svabhāvataḥ॥13-121-20॥
[सुखात् (sukhāt) - from pleasure; एव (eva) - indeed; परम् (param) - higher; दुःखम् (duḥkham) - pain; दुःखात् (duḥkhāt) - from pain; अन्यत् (anyat) - other; परम् (param) - higher; सुखम् (sukham) - pleasure; दृश्यते (dṛśyate) - is seen; हि (hi) - indeed; महाप्राज्ञ (mahāprājña) - wise person; नियतं (niyatam) - certainly; वै (vai) - truly; स्वभावतः (svabhāvataḥ) - by nature;]
(From pleasure indeed greater pain, from pain other greater pleasure— is seen indeed, O wise one, certainly truly by nature.)
From pleasure, indeed, comes greater pain; from pain, in turn, greater pleasure. This is always seen by nature, O wise one. (13-121-20)
त्रिविधानीह वृत्तानि नरस्याहुर्मनीषिणः। पुण्यमन्यत्पापमन्यन्न पुण्यं न च पापकम् ॥१३-१२१-२१॥
trividhāniha vṛttāni narasyāhurmanīṣiṇaḥ। puṇyamanyat pāpamanyan na puṇyaṃ na ca pāpakam ॥13-121-21॥
[त्रिविधानि (trividhāni) - threefold; इह (iha) - here; वृत्तानि (vṛttāni) - conducts; नरस्य (narasya) - of a man; आहुः (āhuḥ) - (they) say; मनीषिणः (manīṣiṇaḥ) - the wise; पुण्यम् (puṇyam) - meritorious; अन्यत् (anyat) - one; पापम् (pāpam) - sinful; अन्यत् (anyat) - another; न (na) - not; पुण्यम् (puṇyam) - meritorious; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; पापकम् (pāpakam) - sinful;]
(Threefold here conducts of a man (the wise) say; meritorious one, sinful another, not meritorious and not sinful.)
The wise say that the conduct of a man here is threefold: one is meritorious, another is sinful, and the third is neither meritorious nor sinful. (13-121-21)
न वृत्तं मन्यतेऽन्यस्य मन्यतेऽन्यस्य पापकम्। तथा स्वकर्मनिर्वृत्तं न पुण्यं न च पापकम् ॥१३-१२१-२२॥
na vṛttaṃ manyate'nyaasya manyate'nyaasya pāpakam। tathā svakarmanirvṛttaṃ na puṇyaṃ na ca pāpakam ॥13-121-22॥
[न (na) - not; वृत्तं (vṛttaṃ) - conduct; मन्यते (manyate) - thinks; अन्यस्य (anyasya) - of another; मन्यते (manyate) - thinks; अन्यस्य (anyasya) - of another; पापकम् (pāpakam) - sinful; तथा (tathā) - so; स्वकर्मनिर्वृत्तं (svakarmanirvṛttaṃ) - one’s own act accomplished; न (na) - not; पुण्यं (puṇyaṃ) - meritorious; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; पापकम् (pāpakam) - sinful;]
(Not conduct thinks of another, thinks of another sinful. So one’s own act accomplished, not meritorious, not and sinful.)
He does not consider the conduct of another, nor does he think another’s actions are sinful. Likewise, having accomplished his own deed, he regards it as neither meritorious nor sinful. (13-121-22)
रमस्वैधस्व मोदस्व देहि चैव यजस्व च। न त्वामभिभविष्यन्ति वैद्या न च तपस्विनः ॥१३-१२१-२३॥
ramasva idhasva modasva dehi caiva yajasva ca। na tvām abhibhaviṣyanti vaidyā na ca tapasvinaḥ॥13-121-23॥
[रमस्व (ramasva) - rejoice; इधस्व (idhasva) - enjoy; मोदस्व (modasva) - take delight; देहि (dehi) - give; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; यजस्व (yajasva) - perform sacrifice; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; अभिभविष्यन्ति (abhibhaviṣyanti) - will overpower; वैद्या (vaidyāḥ) - those skilled (in knowledge); न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; तपस्विनः (tapasvinaḥ) - ascetics;]
(Rejoice, enjoy, take delight, give and indeed perform sacrifice and. Not you will overpower those skilled in knowledge, not and ascetics.)
Rejoice, be happy, take delight, give, and also perform sacrifices. Neither the learned nor the ascetics shall overpower you. (13-121-23)
