सङ्कल्पदंशमशकं शोकहर्षहिमातपम्। मोहान्धकारतिमिरं लोभव्यालसरीसृपम् ॥१४-२७-१॥
saṅkalpa-daṃśa-maśakam śoka-harṣa-himā-tapam | moha-andhakāra-timiraṃ lobha-vyāla-sarīsṛpam ॥14-27-1॥
[सङ्कल्पदंशमशकं (saṅkalpa-daṃśa-maśakam) - desire-bite-mosquito; i.e., mosquito of the bite of desire; शोकहर्षहिमातपम् (śoka-harṣa-himā-tapam) - grief-joy-cold-heat; i.e., cold and heat of sorrow and joy; मोहान्धकारतिमिरं (moha-andhakāra-timiraṃ) - delusion-darkness-gloom; i.e., darkness of the shadow of delusion; लोभव्यालसरीसृपम् (lobha-vyāla-sarīsṛpam) - greed-serpent-creeping-animal; i.e., creeping serpent of greed;]
(The mosquito of the bite of desire, the cold and heat of sorrow and joy, the gloom of the darkness of delusion, the creeping serpent of greed.)
The sting of desire, the alternating chill and heat of sorrow and joy, the obscuring darkness of delusion, and the creeping serpent of greed. (14-27-1)
विषयैकात्ययाध्वानं कामक्रोधविरोधकम्। तदतीत्य महादुर्गं प्रविष्टोऽस्मि महद्वनम् ॥१४-२७-२॥

Having transcended the path that surpasses sense-objects and is opposed to desire and anger, having crossed that great fortress, I have entered the great forest. (14-27-2)

क्व तद्वनं महाप्राज्ञ के वृक्षाः सरितश्च काः। गिरयः पर्वताश्चैव कियत्यध्वनि तद्वनम् ॥१४-२७-३॥
kva tad vanaṃ mahāprājña ke vṛkṣāḥ saritaś ca kāḥ. girayaḥ parvatāś caiva kiyat y adhvani tad vanam ॥14-27-3॥
[क्व (kva) - where; तद्-वनम् (tad-vanam) - that forest; महाप्राज्ञ (mahāprājña) - O greatly wise (one); के (ke) - which (are); वृक्षाः (vṛkṣāḥ) - trees; सरितः (saritaḥ) - rivers; च (ca) - and; काः (kāḥ) - which (are); गिरयः (girayaḥ) - mountains; पर्वताः (parvatāḥ) - hills; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; कियत् (kiyat) - how much; अध्वनि (adhvani) - in (the) distance; तद्-वनम् (tad-vanam) - that forest;]
(Where that forest, O greatly wise, which are (the) trees, (which are the) rivers and which (are the) mountains, hills indeed, how much in distance that forest?)
O greatly wise one, where is that forest? Which trees, rivers, mountains and hills are there, and at what distance is that forest? (14-27-3)

न तदस्ति पृथग्भावे किञ्चिदन्यत्ततः समम्। न तदस्त्यپृथग्भावे किञ्चिद्दूरतरं ततः ॥१४-२७-४॥
na tad asti pṛthag-bhāve kiñcid anyat tataḥ samam। na tad asti apṛthag-bhāve kiñcid dūrataraṃ tataḥ ॥14-27-4॥
[न (na) - not; तत् (tat) - that; अस्ति (asti) - exists; पृथग्भावे (pṛthag-bhāve) - in separate state; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; अन्यत् (anyat) - other; ततः (tataḥ) - than that; समम् (samam) - equal; न (na) - not; तत् (tat) - that; अस्ति (asti) - exists; अपृथग्भावे (apṛthag-bhāve) - in non-separate state; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; दूरतरम् (dūrataraṃ) - more distant; ततः (tataḥ) - than that;]
(Not that exists in separate state anything other than that equal. Not that exists in non-separate state anything more distant than that.)
There does not exist, in the state of separateness, anything equal to that. Nor does there exist, in the state of non-separateness, anything more distant than that. (14-27-4)
तस्माद्ध्रस्वतरं नास्ति न ततोऽस्ति बृहत्तरम्। नास्ति तस्माद्दुःखतरं नास्त्यन्यत्तत्समं सुखम् ॥१४-२७-५॥
tasmāddhrasvataraṃ nāsti na tato'sti bṛhattaram। nāsti tasmādduḥkhataraṃ nāstyanyattatsamaṃ sukham॥14-27-5॥
[तस्मात् (tasmāt) - from that; ध्रस्वतरम् (dhrasvataraṃ) - shorter; नास्ति (nāsti) - there is not; न (na) - not; ततः (tataḥ) - than that; अस्ति (asti) - there is; बृहत्तरम् (bṛhattaram) - greater; नास्ति (nāsti) - there is not; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - from that; दुःखतरम् (duḥkhataraṃ) - more sorrowful; नास्ति (nāsti) - there is not; अन्यत् (anyat) - another; तत्समम् (tatsamam) - equal to that; सुखम् (sukham) - happiness;]
(From that, there is nothing shorter; nor is there anything greater than that. There is not anything more sorrowful than that; nor is there another happiness equal to that.)

न तत्प्रविश्य शोचन्ति न प्रहृष्यन्ति च द्विजाः। न च बिभ्यति केषाञ्चित्तेभ्यो बिभ्यति के च न ॥१४-२७-६॥
na tatpraviśya śocanti na prahṛṣyanti ca dvijāḥ। na ca bibhyati keṣāñcit tebhyo bibhyati ke ca na॥14-27-6॥
[न (na) - not; तत्-प्रविश्य (tat-praviśya) - having entered that; शोचन्ति (śocanti) - they grieve; न (na) - not; प्रहृष्यन्ति (prahṛṣyanti) - they rejoice; च (ca) - and; द्विजाः (dvijāḥ) - twice-borns; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; बिभ्यति (bibhyati) - they fear; केषाञ्चित् (keṣāñcit) - of some; तेभ्यः (tebhyaḥ) - from them; बिभ्यति (bibhyati) - they fear; के (ke) - some; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not;]
(Not having entered that, they grieve, not they rejoice and twice-borns. Not and they fear from some of them, they fear some and not.)
Having entered that, the twice-born neither grieve nor rejoice. Nor do some fear them, nor do some fear from them. (14-27-6)
तस्मिन्वने सप्त महाद्रुमाश्च; फलानि सप्तातिथयश्च सप्त। सप्ताश्रमाः सप्त समाधयश्च; दीक्षाश्च सप्तैतदरण्यरूपम् ॥१४-२७-७॥
tasmin vane sapta mahādrumāś ca; phalāni sapta atithayaś ca sapta. saptāśramāḥ sapta samādhayaś ca; dīkṣāś ca sapta etad araṇya-rūpam ॥14-27-7॥

पञ्चवर्णानि दिव्यानि पुष्पाणि च फलानि च। सृजन्तः पादपास्तत्र व्याप्य तिष्ठन्ति तद्वनम् ॥१४-२७-८॥

चतुर्वर्णानि दिव्यानि पुष्पाणि च फलानि च। सृजन्तः पादपास्तत्र व्याप्य तिष्ठन्ति तद्वनम् ॥१४-२७-१०॥

शङ्कराणि त्रिवर्णानि पुष्पाणि च फलानि च। सृजन्तः पादपास्तत्र व्याप्य तिष्ठन्ति तद्वनम् ॥१४-२७-११॥

सुरभीण्येकवर्णानि पुष्पाणि च फलानि च। सृजन्तः पादपास्तत्र व्याप्य तिष्ठन्ति तद्वनम् ॥१४-२७-१२॥
surabhīṇy eka-varṇāni puṣpāṇi ca phalāni ca। sṛjantaḥ pādapās tatra vyāpya tiṣṭhanti tad vanam ॥14-27-12॥

बहून्यव्यक्तवर्णानि पुष्पाणि च फलानि च। विसृजन्तौ महावृक्षौ तद्वनं व्याप्य तिष्ठतः ॥१४-२७-१३॥
bahūny avyakta-varṇāni puṣpāṇi ca phalāni ca। visṛjantau mahā-vṛkṣau tad vanaṃ vyāpya tiṣṭhataḥ ॥14-27-13॥
[बहूनि (bahūni) - many; अव्यक्तवर्णानि (avyakta-varṇāni) - of indistinct colors; पुष्पाणि (puṣpāṇi) - flowers; च (ca) - and; फलानि (phalāni) - fruits; च (ca) - and; विसृजन्तौ (visṛjantau) - sending forth; महावृक्षौ (mahā-vṛkṣau) - two great trees; तद् (tad) - that; वनम् (vanam) - forest; व्याप्य (vyāpya) - having pervaded; तिष्ठतः (tiṣṭhataḥ) - standing;]
(Many flowers of indistinct colors and fruits the two great trees, having pervaded that forest, stand, sending forth.)

एको ह्यग्निः सुमना ब्राह्मणोऽत्र; पञ्चेन्द्रियाणि समिधश्चात्र सन्ति। तेभ्यो मोक्षाः सप्त भवन्ति दीक्षा; गुणाः फलान्यतिथयः फलाशाः ॥१४-२७-१४॥

[एको (eko) - one; हि (hi) - indeed; अग्निः (agniḥ) - fire; सुमना (sumanā) - of good mind; ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - brāhmaṇa; अत्र (atra) - here; पञ्चेन्द्रियाणि (pañca-indriyāṇi) - five senses; समिधः (samidhaḥ) - firewood; च (ca) - and; अत्र (atra) - here; सन्ति (santi) - are; तेभ्यः (tebhyaḥ) - from these; मोक्षाः (mokṣāḥ) - liberations; सप्त (sapta) - seven; भवन्ति (bhavanti) - arise; दीक्षा (dīkṣā) - consecration; गुणाः (guṇāḥ) - qualities; फलानि (phalāni) - fruits; अतिथयः (atithayaḥ) - guests; फलाशाः (phalāśāḥ) - desires for fruits;]
(One indeed fire of good mind brāhmaṇa here; five senses firewood and here are. From these liberations seven arise consecration; qualities fruits guests desires for fruits.)
Here, there is one fire— the brāhmaṇa of good mind; here are the five senses as firewood. From these, seven liberations arise: consecration, qualities, fruits, guests, and desires for fruits. (14-27-14)
आतिथ्यं प्रतिगृह्णन्ति तत्र सप्त महर्षयः। अर्चितेषु प्रलीनेषु तेष्वन्यद्रोचते वनम् ॥१४-२७-१५॥
ātithyaṃ pratigṛhṇanti tatra sapta maharṣayaḥ। arciteṣu pralīneṣu teṣv anyad rocate vanam ॥14-27-15॥
[आतिथ्यं (ātithyam) - hospitality; प्रतिगृह्णन्ति (pratigṛhṇanti) - (they) receive; तत्र (tatra) - there; सप्त (sapta) - seven; महर्षयः (maharṣayaḥ) - great sages; अर्चितेषु (arciteṣu) - having been honored; प्रलीनेषु (pralīneṣu) - having disappeared; तेषु (teṣu) - in them; अन्यत् (anyat) - another; रोचते (rocate) - is pleasing; वनम् (vanam) - forest;]
(Hospitality (they) receive there seven great sages. When honored (and) disappeared in them, another forest is pleasing.)
There, seven great sages receive hospitality. When they have been honored and have disappeared, another forest becomes pleasing. (14-27-15)
प्रतिज्ञावृक्षमफलं शान्तिच्छायासमन्वितम्। ज्ञानाश्रयं तृप्तितोयमन्तःक्षेत्रज्ञभास्करम् ॥१४-२७-१६॥
pratijñā-vṛkṣa-maphalaṃ śānti-cchāyā-samanvitam। jñānāśrayaṃ tṛpti-toya-m-antaḥ-kṣetrajña-bhāskarām ॥14-27-16॥
[प्रतिज्ञावृक्षम् (pratijñā-vṛkṣam) - vow-tree; अफलं (aphalam) - fruitless; शान्ति (śānti) - peace; च्छायासमन्वितम् (cchāyā-samanvitam) - having shade; ज्ञानाश्रयम् (jñāna-āśrayam) - support of knowledge; तृप्तितोयम् (tṛpti-toyam) - water of contentment; अन्तःक्षेत्रज्ञभास्करम् (antaḥ-kṣetrajña-bhāskaram) - internal knower-sun;]
(The vow-tree, fruitless, possessing the shade of peace, support of knowledge, water of contentment, internal knower-sun.)
The vow is like a tree that bears no fruit, but offers the shade of peace, is the support of knowledge, the water of contentment, and the sun that shines within the knower. (14-27-16)
येऽधिगच्छन्ति तत्सन्तस्तेषां नास्ति भयं पुनः। ऊर्ध्वं चावाक्च तिर्यक्च तस्य नान्तोऽधिगम्यते ॥१४-२७-१७॥
ye'dhigacchanti tat-santas teṣāṃ nāsti bhayaṃ punaḥ। ūrdhvaṃ cāvāk ca tiryak ca tasya nānto'dhigamyate॥14-27-17॥
[ये (ye) - who; अधिगच्छन्ति (adhigacchanti) - attain; तत् (tat) - that; सन्तः (santaḥ) - being virtuous; तेषां (teṣāṃ) - for them; नास्ति (nāsti) - there is not; भयम् (bhayam) - fear; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; ऊर्ध्वम् (ūrdhvam) - upward; च (ca) - and; अवाक् (avāk) - downward; च (ca) - and; तिर्यक् (tiryak) - across; च (ca) - and; तस्य (tasya) - of that; न (na) - not; अन्तः (antaḥ) - end; अधिगम्यते (adhigamyate) - is attained;]
(Who attain that, being virtuous, for them there is not fear again. Upward and downward and across and of that, not end is attained.)
Those virtuous ones who attain that have no fear again; neither upward, nor downward, nor across is an end of that ever reached. (14-27-17)
सप्त स्त्रियस्तत्र वसन्ति सद्यो; अवाङ्मुखा भानुमत्यो जनित्र्यः। ऊर्ध्वं रसानां ददते प्रजाभ्यः; सर्वान्यथा सर्वमनित्यतां च ॥१४-२७-१८॥
sapta striyastatra vasanti sadyo; avāṅmukhā bhānumatyo janitryaḥ। ūrdhvaṃ rasānāṃ dadate prajābhyaḥ; sarvānyathā sarvamanityatāṃ ca॥14-27-18॥
[सप्त (sapta) - seven; स्त्रियः (striyaḥ) - women; तत्र (tatra) - there; वसन्ति (vasanti) - dwell; सद्यः (sadyaḥ) - immediately; अवाङ्मुखाः (avāṅmukhāḥ) - with faces turned downwards; भानुमत्यः (bhānumatyaḥ) - radiant; जनित्र्यः (janitryaḥ) - mothers; ऊर्ध्वम् (ūrdhvam) - upwards; रसानाम् (rasānām) - of fluids; ददते (dadate) - give; प्रजाभ्यः (prajābhyaḥ) - to the creatures; सर्वा (sarvā) - all; अन्यथा (anyathā) - otherwise; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; अनित्यताम् (anityatām) - impermanence; च (ca) - and;]
(Seven women there dwell immediately; with faces turned downwards, radiant mothers; upwards of fluids they give to the creatures; all otherwise all impermanence and.)
There dwell seven women at once, radiant mothers with faces turned downwards; they give the essences upwards to creatures; all is otherwise, all is impermanent. (14-27-18)
तत्रैव प्रतितिष्ठन्ति पुनस्तत्रोदयन्ति च। सप्त सप्तर्षयः सिद्धा वसिष्ठप्रमुखाः सह ॥१४-२७-१९॥
tatraiva pratitiṣṭhanti punastatrodayanti ca। sapta saptarṣayaḥ siddhā vasiṣṭhapramukhāḥ saha॥14-27-19॥
[तत्रैव (tatraiva) - in that very place; प्रतितिष्ठन्ति (pratitiṣṭhanti) - stand firmly; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; तत्र (tatra) - there; उदयन्ति (udayanti) - rise; च (ca) - and; सप्त (sapta) - seven; सप्तर्षयः (saptarṣayaḥ) - the seven seers; सिद्धाः (siddhāḥ) - perfected ones; वसिष्ठप्रमुखाः (vasiṣṭhapramukhāḥ) - headed by Vasiṣṭha; सह (saha) - together;]
(In that very place they stand firmly, again there they rise and also the seven seers, perfected ones, together with (those) headed by Vasiṣṭha.)

यशो वर्चो भगश्चैव विजयः सिद्धितेजसी। एवमेवानुवर्तन्ते सप्त ज्योतींषि भास्करम् ॥१४-२७-२०॥
yaśo varco bhagaścaiva vijayaḥ siddhitejasī। evamevānuvartante sapta jyotīṃṣi bhāskaram ॥14-27-20॥

(Fame, brilliance, prosperity and indeed victory, accomplishment and splendor; thus indeed follow the seven luminaries the sun.)

गिरयः पर्वताश्चैव सन्ति तत्र समासतः। नद्यश्च सरितो वारि वहन्त्यो ब्रह्मसम्भवम् ॥१४-२७-२१॥
girayaḥ parvatāś caiva santi tatra samāsataḥ। nadyaś ca sarito vāri vahantyo brahmasambhavam ॥14-27-21॥
[गिरयः (girayaḥ) - mountains; पर्वताः (parvatāḥ) - hills; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; सन्ति (santi) - are; तत्र (tatra) - there; समासतः (samāsataḥ) - in a group; नद्यः (nadyaḥ) - rivers; च (ca) - and; सरितः (saritaḥ) - streams; वारि (vāri) - water; वहन्त्यः (vahantyaḥ) - carrying; ब्रह्मसम्भवम् (brahmasambhavam) - originated from Brahmā;]
(Mountains, hills and indeed are there in a group; rivers and streams carrying water originated from Brahmā.)
There exist mountains and hills together in that place; and there are also rivers and streams carrying water that originated from Brahmā. (14-27-21)
नदीनां सङ्गमस्तत्र वैतानः समुपह्वरे। स्वात्मतृप्ता यतो यान्ति साक्षाद्दान्ताः पितामहम् ॥१४-२७-२२॥
nadīnām saṅgamastatra vaitānaḥ samupahvare । svātmatṛptā yato yānti sākṣāddāntāḥ pitāmaham ॥14-27-22॥
[नदीनाम् (nadīnām) - of rivers; सङ्गमः (saṅgamaḥ) - confluence; तत्र (tatra) - there; वैतानः (vaitānaḥ) - Vaitāna (name or epithet; related to Vaitaraṇī); समुपह्वरे (samupahvare) - at the very bank; स्वात्मतृप्ताः (svātmatṛptāḥ) - those satisfied in their own self; यतः (yataḥ) - from where; यान्ति (yānti) - go; साक्षात् (sākṣāt) - directly; दान्ताः (dāntāḥ) - self-controlled; पितामहम् (pitāmaham) - to the Grandfather (Brahmā);]
(Of rivers confluence there Vaitāna at the very bank; those satisfied in their own self from where go directly self-controlled to the Grandfather (Brahmā).)
There is the Vaitāna confluence of rivers at the very bank, from where those satisfied in their own self, possessing self-control, go directly to Grandfather Brahmā. (14-27-22)
कृशाशाः सुव्रताशाश्च तपसा दग्धकिल्बिषाः। आत्मन्यात्मानमावेश्य ब्रह्माणं समुपासते ॥१४-२७-२३॥
kṛśāśāḥ suvratāśāś ca tapasā dagdhakilbiṣāḥ। ātmany ātmānam āveśya brahmāṇaṃ samupāsate ॥14-27-23॥
[कृशाशाः (kṛśāśāḥ) - thin-bodied ones; सुव्रताशाः (suvratāśāḥ) - firm-in-vow ones; च (ca) - and; तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; दग्धकिल्बिषाः (dagdhakilbiṣāḥ) - those whose sins have been burnt; आत्मनि (ātmani) - in (their) self; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - (their own) self; आवेश्य (āveśya) - having fixed; ब्रह्माणं (brahmāṇam) - the Brahman; समुपासते (samupāsate) - they worship appropriately;]
(Thin-bodied, firm-in-vow ones, and by austerity those whose sins have been burnt, having fixed the self in (their) self, the Brahman, they worship appropriately.)
The thin-bodied and the firm in vows, whose sins have been burnt by austerity, having established the Self in themselves, worship the Brahman. (14-27-23)
ऋचमप्यत्र शंसन्ति विद्यारण्यविदो जनाः। तदरण्यमभिप्रेत्य यथाधीरमजायत ॥१४-२७-२४॥
ṛcam apy atra śaṁsanti vidyāraṇyavido janāḥ। tad araṇyam abhipretya yathā dhīram ajāyata ॥14-27-24॥
[ऋचम् (ṛcam) - a ṛc (Vedic verse); अपि (api) - also; moreover; अत्र (atra) - here; शंसन्ति (śaṁsanti) - recite; praise; विद्यारण्यविदः (vidyāraṇyavidaḥ) - knowers of Vidyāraṇya; जनाः (janāḥ) - people; persons; तत् (tad) - that; अरण्यम् (araṇyam) - forest; अभिप्रेत्य (abhipretya) - having approached; having gone to; यथा (yathā) - as; in the manner; धीरम् (dhīram) - wise one; अजायत (ajāyata) - was born; arose;]

एतदेतादृशं दिव्यमरण्यं ब्राह्मणा विदुः। विदित्वा चान्वतिष्ठन्त क्षेत्रज्ञेनानुदर्शितम् ॥१४-२७-२५॥
etadetādṛśaṃ divyam araṇyaṃ brāhmaṇā viduḥ। viditvā cānvatiṣṭhanta kṣetrajñenānudarśitam ॥14-27-25॥
[एतदेतादृशम् (etadetādṛśam) - this such as this; दिव्यम् (divyam) - divine; अरण्यम् (araṇyam) - forest; ब्राह्मणाः (brāhmaṇāḥ) - Brāhmaṇas; विदुः (viduḥ) - knew; विदित्वा (viditvā) - having known; च (ca) - and; अन्वतिष्ठन्त (anvatiṣṭhanta) - they followed; क्षेत्रज्ञेन (kṣetrajñena) - by the knower of the field; अनुदर्शितम् (anudarśitam) - pointed out;]
(This such as this divine forest the Brāhmaṇas knew. Having known and they followed, by the knower of the field pointed out.)
The Brāhmaṇas knew of this very divine forest. Having understood it, they followed the path shown by the knower of the field. (14-27-25)
