Vaisesika Sūtra 1.1.31
कारणसामान्ये द्रव्यकर्मणां कर्माकारणमुक्तम् ॥३१॥
kāraṇasāmānyē dravyakarmaṇāṁ karmākāraṇamuktam ॥31॥
[कारण सामान्ये द्रव्य कर्मणां कर्म अकारणम् उक्तम्॥
kāraṇa = cause; sāmānyē = of generality; dravya = substances; karmaṇāṁ = effect; karma = action; akāraṇam = in non-cause; uktam = it is said;॥]
The substances are caused because of the effect of generality, and it is spoken as though action is not the cause.
॥इति प्रथम आह्निकः॥
Thus ends the first chapter
