Vaisesika Sūtra 2.1.15

वायुसन्निकर्षे प्रत्यक्षाभावाद् दृष्टं लिङ्गं न विद्यते ॥१५॥

vāyusannikarṣe pratyakṣābhāvād dr̥ṣṭaṁ liṅgaṁ na vidyate ॥15॥

[वायु सन्निकर्षे प्रत्यक्ष अभावात् दृष्टं लिङ्गं न विद्यते॥
vāyu = air; sannikarṣe = proximity; pratyakṣa = direct perception; abhāvāt = due absence of; dr̥ṣṭaṁ = seeing; liṅgaṁ = distinguishng mark; na = not; vidyate = appears;]

Even when Air is in proximity, there is an absence of direct perception. Hence, it appears, seeing is not its distinguishing mark.
