Yōga Sūtra 1.07
प्रत्यक्षानुमानागमाः प्रमाणानि।
pratyakṣānumānāgamāḥ pramāṇāni।
[प्रत्यक्ष अनुमान आगमाः प्रमाणानि।
pratyakṣa = direct experience; anumāna = drawing inference; āgamāḥ = knowledge from literature; pramāṇāni = are types of validating the evidence activities;]
Pramāna is that which could be inferred by direct evidence (pratyaksa), or that which could be deduced through logic i.e inferred (anumana), or that knowledge handed down through authentic literature (agama).
Types of validating activities engaged by mind that are difficult and not so difficult are described. Watching a game in the stadium is pratyksha. Listening to the commentary of cricket and understanding the game is anumāna. Learning how to cook a recipe from a book is āgama.
