Bhārata
Chapter 21
Bhīma carries Kuntī and his brothers through the forest as the Pāṇḍavas flee south in concealment.
vijñāya niśi panthānaṁ nakṣatrairdakṣiṇāmukhāḥ । yatamānā vanaṁ rājangahanaṁ pratipēdirē ॥BORI: 1-137-18॥
Determining their route at night by the stars, they headed south and, striving onward, entered a dense forest, O king. (BORI: 1-137-18)

tataḥ śrāntāḥ pipāsārtā nidrāndhāḥ pāṇḍunandanāḥ । punarūcurmahāvīryaṁ bhīmasēnamidaṁ vacaḥ ॥BORI: 1-137-19॥
Then the sons of Pandu, exhausted, tormented by thirst, and blinded by sleep, again addressed these words to the mighty Bhimasena: (BORI: 1-137-19)
[PV-KDV:01_027_2] (Bharata)
itaḥ kaṣṭataraṁ kiṁ nu yadvayaṁ gahanē vanē । diśaśca na prajānīmō gantuṁ caiva na śaknumaḥ ॥BORI: 1-137-20॥
What could be worse than this—that we are in a dense forest, do not know our bearings, and cannot go on? (BORI: 1-137-20)
[PV-KDV:01_027_3] (Bharata)
taṁ ca pāpaṁ na jānīmō yadi dagdhaḥ purōcanaḥ । kathaṁ nu vipramucyēma bhayādasmādalakṣitāḥ ॥BORI: 1-137-21॥
We do not know whether that wicked Purocana was burned. How can we escape this danger without being noticed? (BORI: 1-137-21)
[PV-KDV:01_027_4] (Bharata)
punarasmānupādāya tathaiva vraja bhārata । tvaṁ hi nō balavānēkō yathā satatagastathā ॥BORI: 1-137-22॥
Take us up again and continue on in the same way, O Bharata. For you alone among us are as strong as the ever-moving wind. (BORI: 1-137-22)
[PV-KDV:01_027_5] (Bharata)
ityuktō dharmarājēna bhīmasēnō mahābalaḥ । ādāya kuntīṁ bhrātr̥ṁśca jagāmāśu mahābalaḥ ॥BORI: 1-137-23॥
Thus addressed by King Dharma, the mighty Bhimasena swiftly set out, carrying Kunti and his brothers. (BORI: 1-137-23)

O king, as he rushed swiftly onward, the wind stirred by the speed of his thighs blew as it does at the coming of Śuci and Śukra. (BORI: 1-138-1)

Thus the warrior of immeasurable prowess went on, breaking trees; from the force of his speed, the Pandavas nearly fainted. (BORI: 1-138-3)

But there, with difficulty, he carried on his back their delicate and illustrious mother alone, over the banks and across uneven ground. (BORI: 1-138-5)

The exhausted Pāṇḍavas rest in the forest while Bhīma fetches water, laments their hardship, and keeps watch through the night.

At evening, those bulls of Bharata came to a terrible tract of forest with few roots, fruits, or sources of water, and inhabited by fierce birds and beasts. (BORI: 1-138-6)

She who bore these sons by Dharma, Indra, and Vayu now lies exhausted on the ground, in circumstances so unworthy of her. (BORI: 1-138-19)

How can this king, who knows dharma and deserves sovereignty over the three worlds, now lie exhausted on the ground like an ordinary man? (BORI: 1-138-21)
