तेजोभिरुदिताः सर्वे महर्षिसमतेजसः। दश प्रचेतसः पुत्राः सन्तः पूर्वजनाः स्मृताः ॥ मेघजेनाग्निना ये ते पूर्वं दग्धा महौजसः ॥०१-७०-३॥
tejobhiruditāḥ sarve maharṣisamatejasaḥ। daśa pracetasaḥ putrāḥ santaḥ pūrvajanāḥ smṛtāḥ ॥ meghajenāgninā ye te pūrvaṁ dagdhā mahaujasaḥ ॥01-70-3॥

(He, for long years, O king, protecting the subjects by dharma, Nāhuṣa attained very dreadful old age, the destroyer of form. (01-70-33))

यजतो दीर्घसत्रैर्मे शापाच्चोशनसो मुनेः। कामार्थः परिहीणो मे तप्येऽहं तेन पुत्रकाः ॥०१-७०-३८॥
yajato dīrghasatrairme śāpāccośanaso muneḥ। kāmārthaḥ parihīṇo me tapye'haṃ tena putrakāḥ ॥01-70-38॥
[यजतः (yajataḥ) - of me sacrificing; दीर्घ (dīrgha) - long; सत्रैः (satraiḥ) - with sacrificial sessions; मे (me) - of me; शापात् (śāpāt) - from the curse; च (ca) - and; उशनसः (uśanasaḥ) - of Uśanas; मुनेः (muneḥ) - of the sage; काम (kāma) - desire; अर्थः (arthaḥ) - aim; परिहीणः (parihīṇaḥ) - diminished; मे (me) - for me; तप्ये (tapye) - I am tormented; अहम् (aham) - I; तेन (tena) - by that; पुत्रकाः (putrakāḥ) - little sons;]
(Of me sacrificing with long sacrificial sessions, and from the curse of the sage Uśanas, the aim of desire has been diminished for me; by that I am tormented, little sons. (01-70-38))
While I was sacrificing through long sacrificial sessions, and because of the curse of the sage Uśanas, the object of my desire has been lost; because of that I suffer, my dear sons. (01-70-38)
मामकेन शरीरेण राज्यमेकः प्रशास्तु वः। अहं तन्वाभिनवया युवा कामानवाप्नुयाम् ॥०१-७०-३९॥
māmakena śarīreṇa rājyamekaḥ praśāstu vaḥ। ahaṃ tanvābhinavayā yuvā kāmānavāpnuyām ॥01-70-39॥
[मामकेन (māmakena) - by my own; शरीरेण (śarīreṇa) - by the body; राज्यम् (rājyam) - kingdom; एकः (ekaḥ) - one; प्रशास्तु (praśāstu) - let him rule; वः (vaḥ) - your; अहम् (aham) - I; तन्वा (tanvā) - with a body; अभिनवया (abhinavayā) - with a fresh one; युवा (yuvā) - young; कामान् (kāmān) - desires; अवाप्नुयाम् (avāpnuyām) - may obtain;]
(With my body, one may rule your kingdom. I, with a fresh body, young, may obtain desires. (01-70-39))
Let one of you rule the kingdom with my body, while I, young in a fresh body, may enjoy the objects of desire. (01-70-39)
न ते तस्य प्रत्यगृह्णन्यदुप्रभृतयो जराम्। तमब्रवीत्ततः पूरुः कनीयान्सत्यविक्रमः ॥०१-७०-४०॥
na te tasya pratyagr̥hṇanyaduprabhr̥tayo jarām। tamabravīttataḥ pūruḥ kanīyānsatyavikramaḥ ॥01-70-40॥
[न (na) - not; ते (te) - they; तस्य (tasya) - his; प्रत्यगृह्णन् (pratyagr̥hṇan) - accepted; यदु (yadu) - Yadu; प्रभृतयः (prabhr̥tayaḥ) - and those beginning with; जराम् (jarām) - old age; तम् (tam) - to him; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; ततः (tataḥ) - then; पूरुः (pūruḥ) - Pūru; कनीयान् (kanīyān) - younger; सत्य (satya) - true; विक्रमः (vikramaḥ) - valor;]
(Not they, Yadu and the others, accepted his old age. Then Pūru, the younger one, true in valor, said to him. (01-70-40))

राजंश्चराभिनवया तन्वा यौवनगोचरः। अहं जरां समास्थाय राज्ये स्थास्यामि तेऽऽज्ञया ॥०१-७०-४१॥
rājaṃścarābhinavayā tanvā yauvanagocaraḥ। ahaṃ jarāṃ samāsthāya rājye sthāsyāmi te''jñayā ॥01-70-41॥
[राजन् (rājan) - O king; चर (cara) - move about; अभिनवया (abhinavayā) - with fresh; तन्वा (tanvā) - body; यौवन (yauvana) - youth; गोचरः (gocaraḥ) - having as range; अहम् (aham) - I; जराम् (jarām) - old age; समास्थाय (samāsthāya) - having taken up; राज्ये (rājye) - in the kingdom; स्थास्यामि (sthāsyāmi) - I shall remain; ते (te) - your; आज्ञया (ājñayā) - by command;]
(O king, move about with a fresh body, having youth as your range; I, having taken up old age, shall remain in the kingdom by your command. (01-70-41))

एवमुक्तः स राजर्षिस्तपोवीर्यसमाश्रयात्। सञ्चारयामास जरां तदा पुत्रे महात्मनि ॥०१-७०-४२॥
evamuktaḥ sa rājarṣistapovīryasamāśrayāt। sañcārayāmāsa jarāṃ tadā putre mahātmani ॥01-70-42॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - addressed, spoken to; सः (saḥ) - he, that; राजा (rājā) - king; ऋषिः (ṛṣiḥ) - seer, sage; तपस् (tapas) - austerity, ascetic heat; वीर्य (vīrya) - power, potency; समाश्रयात् (samāśrayāt) - from reliance upon, through taking refuge in; सञ्चारयामास (sañcārayāmāsa) - caused to move, transferred; जराम् (jarām) - old age, decay; तदा (tadā) - then; पुत्रे (putre) - into the son, in the son; महात्मनि (mahātmani) - great-souled, noble-natured;]
(Thus addressed, that royal seer, through reliance on the potency of austerity, then caused old age to pass into the great-souled son. (01-70-42))

पौरवेणाथ वयसा राजा यौवनमास्थितः। यायातेनापि वयसा राज्यं पूरुरकारयत् ॥०१-७०-४३॥
pauraveṇātha vayasā rājā yauvanamāsthitaḥ। yāyātenāpi vayasā rājyaṃ pūrurakārayat ॥01-70-43॥
[पौरवेण (pauraveṇa) - by Paurava, belonging to Pūru; अथ (atha) - then; वयसा (vayasā) - by age; राजा (rājā) - the king; यौवनम् (yauvanam) - youth; आस्थितः (āsthitaḥ) - having attained; यायातेन (yāyātena) - by Yāyāta, belonging to Yayāti; अपि (api) - also; वयसा (vayasā) - by age; राज्यम् (rājyam) - kingdom; पूरुः (pūruḥ) - Pūru; अकारयत् (akārayat) - caused to be done, caused to be administered;]
(Then, by the Paurava age, the king having attained youth, with the Yāyāta age also, Pūru caused the kingdom to be administered.)
Then the king, having attained youth through Pūru’s age, made Pūru administer the kingdom with Yayāti’s age as well. (01-70-43)
ततो वर्षसहस्रान्ते ययातिरपराजितः। अतृप्त एव कामानां पूरुं पुत्रमुवाच ह ॥०१-७०-४४॥
tato varṣasahasrānte yayātiraparājitaḥ। atṛpta eva kāmānāṃ pūruṃ putramuvāca ha ॥01-70-44॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; वर्ष-सहस्र-अन्ते (varṣa-sahasra-ante) - at the end of a thousand years; ययातिः (yayātiḥ) - Yayāti; अपराजितः (aparājitaḥ) - unconquered; अतृप्तः (atṛptaḥ) - unsatisfied; एव (eva) - indeed; कामानाम् (kāmānām) - of desires; पूरुम् (pūrum) - Pūru; पुत्रम् (putram) - son; उवाच (uvāca) - spoke; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(Then, at the end of a thousand years, Yayāti, unconquered, unsatisfied indeed with desires, to Pūru, his son, spoke indeed.)
Then, at the end of a thousand years, the unconquered Yayāti, still unsatisfied by desires, spoke to his son Pūru. (01-70-44)
त्वया दायादवानस्मि त्वं मे वंशकरः सुतः। पौरवो वंश इति ते ख्यातिं लोके गमिष्यति ॥०१-७०-४५॥
tvayā dāyādavānasmi tvaṃ me vaṃśakaraḥ sutaḥ। pauravo vaṃśa iti te khyātiṃ loke gamiṣyati ॥01-70-45॥
[त्वया (tvayā) - by you; दायादवान् (dāyādavān) - possessing an heir; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; त्वम् (tvam) - you; मे (me) - my; वंश (vaṃśa) - lineage; करः (karaḥ) - maker, continuer; सुतः (sutaḥ) - son; पौरवः (pauravaḥ) - Paurava, descended from Puru; वंशः (vaṃśaḥ) - lineage; इति (iti) - thus; ते (te) - your; ख्यातिम् (khyātim) - fame; लोके (loke) - in the world; गमिष्यति (gamiṣyati) - will go, will attain;]
(By you I am possessing an heir; you are my lineage-making son. As "the Paurava lineage," your lineage will attain fame in the world. (01-70-45))
Through you I have an heir; you are my son who will continue my lineage. Your line will become famous in the world as the Paurava lineage. (01-70-45)
ततः स नृपशार्दूलः पूरुं राज्येऽभिषिच्य च। कालेन महता पश्चात्कालधर्ममुपेयिवान् ॥०१-७०-४६॥
tataḥ sa nṛpaśārdūlaḥ pūruṁ rājye'bhiṣicya ca। kālena mahatā paścātkāladharmamupeyivān ॥01-70-46॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सः (saḥ) - he; नृप-शार्दूलः (nṛpa-śārdūlaḥ) - tiger among kings, foremost of kings; पूरुम् (pūrum) - Pūru; राज्ये (rājye) - in the kingdom; अभिषिच्य (abhiṣicya) - having consecrated, having anointed; च (ca) - and; कालेन (kālena) - by time; महता (mahatā) - great, long; पश्चात् (paścāt) - afterwards; काल-धर्मम् (kāla-dharmam) - the law of Time, death; उपेयिवान् (upeyivān) - attained, approached;]
(Then he, the tiger among kings, having consecrated Pūru in the kingdom, and afterwards by a great time, attained the law of Time.)
Then that foremost of kings consecrated Pūru in the kingdom, and after a long time he attained the law of Time, that is, death. (01-70-46)
