सुराणामसुराणां च समजायत वै मिथः। ऐश्वर्यं प्रति सङ्घर्षस्त्रैलोक्ये सचराचरे ॥०१-७१-५॥
surāṇāmasurāṇāṃ ca samajāyata vai mithaḥ। aiśvaryaṃ prati saṅgharṣastrailokye sacarācare ॥01-71-5॥

(Of the gods and of the asuras indeed mutually arose, with regard to sovereignty, a conflict in the three worlds together with the moving and unmoving. (01-71-5))

(With the desire to conquer, then the gods chose the sage Āṅgirasa, by priestly office for the purpose of sacrificial officiating; but the others chose Kāvya Uśanas. Those two Brāhmaṇas, both, were always intensely mutually competing. (01-71-6))
Then, desiring victory, the gods chose the sage Āṅgirasa as their priest for the sacrificial office; the others, however, chose Kāvya Uśanas. Those two Brāhmaṇas were both always intensely in rivalry with one another. (01-71-6)
तत्र देवा निजघ्नुर्यान्दानवान्युधि सङ्गतान्। तान्पुनर्जीवयामास काव्यो विद्याबलाश्रयात् ॥ ततस्ते पुनरुत्थाय योधयां चक्रिरे सुरान् ॥०१-७१-७॥

[तत्र (tatra) - there; देवाः (devāḥ) - the gods; निजघ्नुः (nijaghnuḥ) - struck down; यान् (yān) - whom; दानवान् (dānavān) - the Dānavas; युधि (yudhi) - in battle; सङ्गतान् (saṅgatān) - assembled; तान् (tān) - them; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; जीवयामास (jīvayāmāsa) - caused to live; काव्यः (kāvyaḥ) - Kāvya; विद्या-बल-आश्रयात् (vidyā-bala-āśrayāt) - by resorting to the power of knowledge; ततः (tataḥ) - then; ते (te) - they; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; उत्थाय (utthāya) - having risen; योधयाम् (yodhayām) - battle; चक्रिरे (cakrire) - performed; सुरान् (surān) - the gods;]
(There the gods struck down in battle those assembled Dānavas whom Kāvya again revived by resorting to the power of knowledge. Then they, having risen again, waged battle against the gods. (01-71-7))

असुरास्तु निजघ्नुर्यान्सुरान्समरमूर्धनि। न तान्सञ्जीवयामास बृहस्पतिरुदारधीः ॥०१-७१-८॥
asurāstu nijaghnuryānsurānsamaramūrdhani। na tānsañjīvayāmāsa bṛhaspatirudāradhīḥ ॥01-71-8॥
[असुराः (asurāḥ) - demons; तु (tu) - but; निजघ्नुः (nijaghnuḥ) - slew; यान् (yān) - whom; सुरान् (surān) - gods; समर (samara) - battle; मूर्धनि (mūrdhani) - at the head; न (na) - not; तान् (tān) - those; सञ्जीवयामास (sañjīvayāmāsa) - revived; बृहस्पतिः (bṛhaspatiḥ) - Bṛhaspati; उदार (udāra) - noble; धीः (dhīḥ) - intellect; उदारधीः (udāradhīḥ) - noble-minded;]
(But the demons slew which gods at the head of battle; those Bṛhaspati, noble-minded, did not revive. (01-71-8))

न हि वेद स तां विद्यां यां काव्यो वेद वीर्यवान्। सञ्जीवनीं ततो देवा विषादमगमन्परम् ॥०१-७१-९॥
na hi veda sa tāṃ vidyāṃ yāṃ kāvyo veda vīryavān। sañjīvanīṃ tato devā viṣādamagamanparam ॥01-71-9॥
[न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; वेद (veda) - knows; सः (saḥ) - he; ताम् (tām) - that; विद्याम् (vidyām) - knowledge; याम् (yām) - which; काव्यः (kāvyaḥ) - Kāvya, the descendant of Kavi; वेद (veda) - knows; वीर्यवान् (vīryavān) - possessed of power; सञ्जीवनीम् (sañjīvanīm) - the life-restoring one; ततः (tataḥ) - therefore; देवाः (devāḥ) - the gods; विषादम् (viṣādam) - despondency; अगमन् (agaman) - went; परम् (param) - supreme;]
(For he does not know that knowledge which the mighty Kāvya knows, the Sañjīvanī; therefore the gods went to supreme despondency. (01-71-9))
For he did not know the knowledge known to the mighty Kāvya, namely the life-restoring Sañjīvanī. Therefore the gods fell into deep despair. (01-71-9)
ते तु देवा भयोद्विग्नाः काव्यादुशनसस्तदा। ऊचुः कचमुपागम्य ज्येष्ठं पुत्रं बृहस्पतेः ॥०१-७१-१०॥
te tu devā bhayodvignāḥ kāvyāduśanasastadā। ūcuḥ kacamupāgamya jyeṣṭhaṁ putraṁ bṛhaspateḥ ॥01-71-10॥
[ते (te) - those; तु (tu) - but; देवाः (devāḥ) - gods; भय (bhaya) - fear; उद्विग्नाः (udvignāḥ) - agitated; काव्यात् (kāvyāt) - from Kāvya; उशनसः (uśanasaḥ) - from Uśanas; तदा (tadā) - then; ऊचुः (ūcuḥ) - said; कचम् (kacam) - Kaca; उपागम्य (upāgamya) - having approached; ज्येष्ठम् (jyeṣṭham) - eldest; पुत्रम् (putram) - son; बृहस्पतेः (bṛhaspateḥ) - of Bṛhaspati;]
(But those gods, agitated by fear from Kāvya Uśanas then, having approached Kaca, the eldest son of Bṛhaspati, said.)
Then the gods, alarmed by fear of Kāvya Uśanas, approached Kaca, the eldest son of Bṛhaspati, and said. (01-71-10)
भजमानान्भजस्वास्मान्कुरु नः साह्यमुत्तमम्। यासौ विद्या निवसति ब्राह्मणेऽमिततेजसि ॥ शुक्रे तामाहर क्षिप्रं भागभाङ्नो भविष्यसि ॥०१-७१-११॥
bhajamānānbhajasvāsmānkuru naḥ sāhyamuttamam। yāsau vidyā nivasati brāhmaṇe'mitatejasi ॥ śukre tāmāhara kṣipraṃ bhāgabhāṅno bhaviṣyasi ॥01-71-11॥
[भजमानान् (bhajamānān) - honoring, serving, or devoted ones; भजस्व (bhajasva) - favor, accept, or serve; अस्मान् (asmān) - us; कुरु (kuru) - make, do; नः (naḥ) - for us, our; साह्यम् (sāhyam) - assistance, help; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - highest, best; या (yā) - which; असौ (asau) - that; विद्या (vidyā) - knowledge, science; निवसति (nivasati) - dwells, resides; ब्राह्मणे (brāhmaṇe) - in the Brāhmaṇa; अमिततेजसि (amitatejasi) - of immeasurable splendor; शुक्रे (śukre) - in Śukra; ताम् (tām) - that; आहर (āhara) - bring, fetch; क्षिप्रम् (kṣipram) - quickly; भागभाक् (bhāgabhāk) - partaker of a share; नः (naḥ) - of us, our; भविष्यसि (bhaviṣyasi) - you will become;]
(Favor us who are honoring; make for us the highest assistance. Which, that knowledge dwells in Śukra, the Brāhmaṇa of immeasurable splendor. Bring that quickly; you will become a partaker of our share. (01-71-11))
Favor us, who are devoted to you, and give us the best help. Bring quickly that knowledge which dwells in Śukra, the Brāhmaṇa of immeasurable splendor; you will become a partaker in our share. (01-71-11)
वृषपर्वसमीपे स शक्यो द्रष्टुं त्वया द्विजः। रक्षते दानवांस्तत्र न स रक्षत्यदानवान् ॥०१-७१-१२॥
vṛṣaparvasamīpe sa śakyo draṣṭuṁ tvayā dvijaḥ। rakṣate dānavāṁstatra na sa rakṣatyadānavān ॥01-71-12॥
[वृषपर्व (vṛṣaparva) - Vṛṣaparvan; समीपे (samīpe) - near, in the vicinity; सः (saḥ) - he, that; शक्यः (śakyaḥ) - able, possible; द्रष्टुम् (draṣṭum) - to be seen; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; द्विजः (dvijaḥ) - twice-born one, Brāhmaṇa; रक्षते (rakṣate) - protects; दानवान् (dānavān) - Dānavas, descendants of Danu; तत्र (tatra) - there; न (na) - not; सः (saḥ) - he; रक्षति (rakṣati) - protects; अदानवान् (adānavān) - non-Dānavas, those who are not Dānavas;]
(Near Vṛṣaparvan, that twice-born one is able to be seen by you. There he protects the Dānavas; he does not protect non-Dānavas. (01-71-12))
That Brāhmaṇa can be seen by you near Vṛṣaparvan. There he protects the Dānavas; he does not protect those who are not Dānavas. (01-71-12)
तमाराधयितुं शक्तो भवान्पूर्ववयाः कविम्। देवयानीं च दयितां सुतां तस्य महात्मनः ॥०१-७१-१३॥
tamārādhayituṃ śakto bhavānpūrvavayāḥ kavim। devayānīṃ ca dayitāṃ sutāṃ tasya mahātmanaḥ ॥01-71-13॥
[तम् (tam) - him; आराधयितुम् (ārādhayitum) - to propitiate; शक्तः (śaktaḥ) - able; भवान् (bhavān) - you; पूर्ववयाः (pūrvavayāḥ) - being of early age; कविम् (kavim) - the sage; देवयानीम् (devayānīm) - Devayānī; च (ca) - and; दयिताम् (dayitām) - beloved; सुताम् (sutām) - daughter; तस्य (tasya) - of him; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - of the great-souled one;]
(Him, to propitiate, you, being of early age, are able, the sage, and Devayānī, the beloved daughter of that great-souled one. (01-71-13))
Being young, you are able to propitiate that sage, and also Devayānī, the beloved daughter of that great-souled one. (01-71-13)
त्वमाराधयितुं शक्तो नान्यः कश्चन विद्यते। शीलदाक्षिण्यमाधुर्यैराचारेण दमेन च ॥०१-७१-१४॥
tvamārādhayituṃ śakto nānyaḥ kaścana vidyate। śīladākṣiṇyamādhuryairācāreṇa damena ca ॥01-71-14॥
[त्वम् (tvam) - you; आराधयितुम् (ārādhayitum) - to propitiate, to please; शक्तः (śaktaḥ) - able; न (na) - not; अन्यः (anyaḥ) - another; कश्चन (kaścana) - anyone whatsoever; विद्यते (vidyate) - is found, exists; शील (śīla) - good character, conduct; दाक्षिण्य (dākṣiṇya) - gracious courtesy, right-heartedness; माधुर्यैः (mādhuryaiḥ) - by sweetnesses, by charm; आचारेण (ācāreṇa) - by conduct; दमेन (damena) - by self-restraint; च (ca) - and;]
(You, to propitiate, are able; not another anyone is found, by character, courtesy, and sweetness, and by conduct and self-restraint. (01-71-14))
You are able to propitiate; no one else is found who can do so, through good character, graciousness, sweetness, conduct, and self-restraint. (01-71-14)
देवयान्यां हि तुष्टायां विद्यां तां प्राप्स्यसि ध्रुवम् ॥०१-७१-१४॥
devayānyāṃ hi tuṣṭāyāṃ vidyāṃ tāṃ prāpsyasi dhruvam ॥01-71-14॥
[देवयान्याम् (devayānyām) - in Devayānī; हि (hi) - indeed; तुष्टायाम् (tuṣṭāyām) - being pleased; विद्याम् (vidyām) - knowledge; ताम् (tām) - that; प्राप्स्यसि (prāpsyasi) - you will obtain; ध्रुवम् (dhruvam) - certainly;]
(When Devayānī is pleased indeed, that knowledge you will obtain certainly. (01-71-14))

तथेत्युक्त्वा ततः प्रायाद्बृहस्पतिसुतः कचः। तदाभिपूजितो देवैः समीपं वृषपर्वणः ॥०१-७१-१५॥
tathetyuktvā tataḥ prāyādbṛhaspatisutaḥ kacaḥ। tadābhipūjito devaiḥ samīpaṃ vṛṣaparvaṇaḥ ॥01-71-15॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; so; इति (iti) - so; thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having said; ततः (tataḥ) - then; thereafter; प्रायात् (prāyāt) - went forth; set out; बृहस्पति-सुतः (bṛhaspati-sutaḥ) - son of Bṛhaspati; कचः (kacaḥ) - Kaca; तदा (tadā) - then; at that time; अभिपूजितः (abhipūjitaḥ) - honored; worshipped; देवैः (devaiḥ) - by the gods; समीपम् (samīpam) - to the presence; to the vicinity; वृषपर्वणः (vṛṣaparvaṇaḥ) - of Vṛṣaparvan;]
(Having said thus, then went forth Bṛhaspati's son Kaca, then honored by the gods, to the presence of Vṛṣaparvan.)
Having said this, Kaca, the son of Bṛhaspati, set out. Honored by the gods, he went to the presence of Vṛṣaparvan. (01-71-15)
स गत्वा त्वरितो राजन्देवैः सम्प्रेषितः कचः। असुरेन्द्रपुरे शुक्रं दृष्ट्वा वाक्यमुवाच ह ॥०१-७१-१६॥
sa gatvā tvarito rājandevaiḥ sampreṣitaḥ kacaḥ। asurendrapure śukraṃ dṛṣṭvā vākyamuvāca ha ॥01-71-16॥
[स (sa) - he; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; त्वरितः (tvaritaḥ) - hurried; राजन् (rājan) - O king; देवैः (devaiḥ) - by the gods; सम्प्रेषितः (sampreṣitaḥ) - sent forth; कचः (kacaḥ) - Kaca; असुरेन्द्रपुरे (asurendra-pure) - in the city of the lord of the Asuras; शुक्रम् (śukram) - Śukra; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - speech; उवाच (uvāca) - spoke; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(He, having gone, hurried, O king, sent forth by the gods, Kaca, in the city of the lord of the Asuras, having seen Śukra, spoke the speech indeed. (01-71-16))

ऋषेरङ्गिरसः पौत्रं पुत्रं साक्षाद्बृहस्पतेः। नाम्ना कच इति ख्यातं शिष्यं गृह्णातु मां भवान् ॥०१-७१-१७॥
ṛṣeraṅgirasaḥ pautraṁ putraṁ sākṣādbṛhaspateḥ। nāmnā kaca iti khyātaṁ śiṣyaṁ gṛhṇātu māṁ bhavān ॥01-71-17॥

ब्रह्मचर्यं चरिष्यामि त्वय्यहं परमं गुरौ। अनुमन्यस्व मां ब्रह्मन्सहस्रं परिवत्सरान् ॥०१-७१-१८॥

(Always intending to propitiate her, the young man, one come to youth, at the onset, singing, dancing, and playing, pleased Devayānī. (01-71-22))
Always seeking to win her favor, the young man, newly come into youth, delighted Devayānī by singing, dancing, and playing. (01-71-22)
संशीलयन्देवयानीं कन्यां सम्प्राप्तयौवनाम्। पुष्पैः फलैः प्रेषणैश्च तोषयामास भारत ॥०१-७१-२३॥

(Cultivating companionship with Devayānī, the maiden who had attained youth, with flowers, with fruits, and with errands he pleased her, O Bhārata. (01-71-23))

[पञ्च (pañca) - five; वर्षशतानि (varṣa-śatāni) - hundreds of years; एवम् (evam) - thus; कचस्य (kacasya) - of Kaca; चरतः (carataḥ) - practicing; व्रतम् (vratam) - vow, observance; तत्र (tatra) - there, in that period; अतीयुः (atīyuḥ) - passed by, elapsed; अथो (atho) - and then; बुद्ध्वा (buddhvā) - having known, having understood; दानवाः (dānavāḥ) - the Dānavas, descendants of Danu; तम् (tam) - that, him; ततः (tataḥ) - then, thereafter; कचम् (kacam) - Kaca;]
(Five hundreds of years thus, of Kaca practicing the vow, there passed; and then, having understood that Kaca, the Dānavas then... (01-71-25))
As Kaca was thus practicing the vow, five hundred years passed. Then the Dānavas, having learned of him, then approached Kaca. (01-71-25)
गा रक्षन्तं वने दृष्ट्वा रहस्येकममर्षिताः। जघ्नुर्बृहस्पतेर्द्वेषाद्विद्यारक्षार्थमेव च ॥ हत्वा शालावृकेभ्यश्च प्रायच्छंस्तिलशः कृतम् ॥०१-७१-२६॥
gā rakṣantaṃ vane dṛṣṭvā rahasyekamamarṣitāḥ। jaghnurbṛhaspaterdveṣādvidyārakṣārthameva ca ॥ hatvā śālāvṛkebhyaśca prāyacchaṃstilaśaḥ kṛtam ॥01-71-26॥
[गाः (gāḥ) - cows; रक्षन्तम् (rakṣantam) - protecting; वने (vane) - in the forest; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; रहसि (rahasi) - in a secret place; एकम् (ekam) - alone; अमर्षिताः (amarṣitāḥ) - enraged; जघ्नुः (jaghnuḥ) - they killed; बृहस्पतेः (bṛhaspateḥ) - of Bṛhaspati; द्वेषात् (dveṣāt) - from hatred; विद्या (vidyā) - knowledge; रक्षा (rakṣā) - protection; अर्थम् (artham) - for the purpose; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and; हत्वा (hatvā) - having killed; शालावृकेभ्यः (śālāvṛkebhyaḥ) - to the jackals; च (ca) - and; प्रायच्छन् (prāyacchan) - they gave; तिलशः (tilaśaḥ) - in sesame-like pieces; कृतम् (kṛtam) - made;]
(Having seen in the forest him protecting the cows, alone in a secret place, being enraged, from hatred of Bṛhaspati and indeed for the purpose of protecting the knowledge, they killed him. Having killed him, made into sesame-like pieces, they gave him to the jackals. (01-71-26))
Seeing him alone in a secluded place in the forest, protecting the cows, they became enraged and killed him out of hatred for Bṛhaspati and also for the very purpose of safeguarding the knowledge. After killing him, they cut him into tiny pieces and gave him to the jackals. (01-71-26)
ततो गावो निवृत्तास्ता अगोपाः स्वं निवेशनम्। ता दृष्ट्वा रहिता गास्तु कचेनाभ्यागता वनात् ॥ उवाच वचनं काले देवयान्यथ भारत ॥०१-७१-२७॥
tato gāvo nivṛttāstā agopāḥ svaṃ niveśanam। tā dṛṣṭvā rahitā gāstu kacenābhyāgatā vanāt ॥ uvāca vacanaṃ kāle devayānyatha bhārata ॥01-71-27॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; thereafter; गावः (gāvaḥ) - cows; निवृत्ताः (nivṛttāḥ) - returned; turned back; ताः (tāḥ) - those; अगोपाः (agopāḥ) - without a cowherd; unprotected by a keeper; स्वम् (svam) - own; निवेशनम् (niveśanam) - dwelling; abode; ताः (tāḥ) - those; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; रहिताः (rahitāḥ) - bereft; separated; गाः (gāḥ) - cows; तु (tu) - but; indeed; कचेन (kacena) - by Kacha; with respect to Kacha; अभ्यागताः (abhyāgatāḥ) - come back; arrived; वनात् (vanāt) - from the forest; उवाच (uvāca) - spoke; said; वचनम् (vacanam) - word; speech; काले (kāle) - at the proper time; in time; देवयानी (devayānī) - Devayānī; अथ (atha) - then; thereafter; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; O descendant of Bharata;]
(Then those cows, returned, without a cowherd, to their own dwelling. Having seen those cows, however, bereft of Kacha, come back from the forest, Devayānī then, in due time, spoke a word, O Bhārata. (01-71-27))
Then those cows returned without a cowherd to their own dwelling. Seeing that the cows had come back from the forest without Kacha, Devayānī then spoke these words at the proper time, O Bhārata. (01-71-27)
अहुतं चाग्निहोत्रं ते सूर्यश्चास्तं गतः प्रभो। अगोपाश्चागता गावः कचस्तात न दृश्यते ॥०१-७१-२८॥
ahutaṃ cāgnihotraṃ te sūryaścāstaṃ gataḥ prabho। agopāścāgatā gāvaḥ kacastāta na dṛśyate ॥01-71-28॥
[अहुतम् (ahutam) - unoffered, not sacrificed into the fire; च (ca) - and; अग्निहोत्रम् (agnihotram) - Agnihotra, the fire-oblation; ते (te) - your; सूर्यः (sūryaḥ) - the sun; च (ca) - and; अस्तम् (astam) - to setting, to the homeward resting-place; गतः (gataḥ) - gone; प्रभो (prabho) - O lord; अगोपाः (agopāḥ) - without cowherds, unguarded by herdsmen; च (ca) - and; आगताः (āgatāḥ) - come, arrived; गावः (gāvaḥ) - cows; कचः (kacaḥ) - Kaca; तात (tāta) - O father, dear one; न (na) - not; दृश्यते (dṛśyate) - is seen, appears;]
(And your Agnihotra is unoffered, and the sun has gone to setting, O lord. The cows have come without cowherds, O father, Kaca is not seen. (01-71-28))
O lord, your Agnihotra remains unoffered, and the sun has set. The cows have returned without their herdsmen, O father, but Kaca is not seen. (01-71-28)
व्यक्तं हतो मृतो वापि कचस्तात भविष्यति। तं विना न च जीवेयं कचं सत्यं ब्रवीमि ते ॥०१-७१-२९॥
vyaktaṃ hato mṛto vāpi kacastāta bhaviṣyati। taṃ vinā na ca jīveyaṃ kacaṃ satyaṃ bravīmi te ॥01-71-29॥
[व्यक्तम् (vyaktam) - certainly; हतः (hataḥ) - slain; मृतः (mṛtaḥ) - dead; वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - even; कचः (kacaḥ) - Kaca; तात (tāta) - dear father; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be; तम् (tam) - him; विना (vinā) - without; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; जीवेयम् (jīveyam) - I would live; कचम् (kacam) - Kaca; सत्यम् (satyam) - truth; ब्रवीमि (bravīmi) - I speak; ते (te) - to you;]
(Certainly Kaca, dear father, will be slain or even dead. Without him, I would not live, and I speak the truth to you about Kaca. (01-71-29))

(Then, having applied the reviving knowledge, he called Kaca. Called, Kaca then appeared unharmed by the knowledge. Asked by the Brahmin maiden, he also declared, "I have been killed." (01-71-31))
Then, after employing the knowledge that restores life, he called Kaca. When summoned, Kaca appeared unharmed by that knowledge. Questioned by the Brahmin maiden, he also said, "I have been killed." (01-71-31)
स पुनर्देवयान्योक्तः पुष्पाहारो यदृच्छया। वनं ययौ ततो विप्रो ददृशुर्दानवाश्च तम् ॥०१-७१-३२॥
sa punardevayānyoktaḥ puṣpāhāro yadṛcchayā। vanaṃ yayau tato vipro dadṛśurdānavāśca tam ॥01-71-32॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; देवयान्या (devayānyā) - by Devayānī; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - spoken to; पुष्पाहारः (puṣpāhāraḥ) - Puṣpāhāra, the one whose food is flowers; यदृच्छया (yadṛcchayā) - by chance; वनम् (vanam) - forest; ययौ (yayau) - went; ततः (tataḥ) - then; विप्रः (vipraḥ) - Brahmin; ददृशुः (dadṛśuḥ) - saw; दानवाः (dānavāḥ) - Dānavas; च (ca) - and; तम् (tam) - him;]
(He, again spoken to by Devayānī, Puṣpāhāra, by chance to the forest went; then the Brahmin, and the Dānavas saw him. (01-71-32))
Puṣpāhāra, the Brahmin, having again been addressed by Devayānī, went to the forest by chance. Then the Dānavas saw him. (01-71-32)
ततो द्वितीयं हत्वा तं दग्ध्वा कृत्वा च चूर्णशः। प्रायच्छन्ब्राह्मणायैव सुरायामसुरास्तदा ॥०१-७१-३३॥
tato dvitīyaṃ hatvā taṃ dagdhvā kṛtvā ca cūrṇaśaḥ। prāyacchanbrāhmaṇāyaiva surāyāmasurāstadā ॥01-71-33॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; द्वितीयम् (dvitīyam) - the second one; हत्वा (hatvā) - having killed; तम् (tam) - him; दग्ध्वा (dagdhvā) - having burned; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; च (ca) - and; चूर्णशः (cūrṇaśaḥ) - into powder; प्रायच्छन् (prāyacchan) - they gave; ब्राह्मणाय (brāhmaṇāya) - to the Brāhmaṇa; एव (eva) - indeed; सुरायाम् (surāyām) - in liquor; असुराः (asurāḥ) - the Asuras; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Then, having killed that second one, having burned him and made him into powder, the Asuras then gave him in liquor to the Brāhmaṇa himself. (01-71-33))
Then the Asuras killed him a second time, burned him, reduced him to powder, and gave him to the Brāhmaṇa himself mixed in liquor. (01-71-33)
देवयान्यथ भूयोऽपि वाक्यं पितरमब्रवीत्। पुष्पाहारः प्रेषणकृत्कचस्तात न दृश्यते ॥०१-७१-३४॥

(Then Devayānī again spoke a statement to her father: "Kaca, the flower-gatherer, the doer of errands, dear father, is not seen." (01-71-34))

(Of Bṛhaspati the son, O daughter, Kaca has gone to the state of the dead. Even brought to life by the knowledge, thus he is slain. What shall I do? (01-71-35))

[मा एवम् (mā evam) - not thus; शुचः (śucaḥ) - grieve; मा (mā) - do not; रुद (ruda) - weep; देवयानि (devayāni) - O Devayānī; न (na) - not; त्वादृशी (tvādṛśī) - one like you; मर्त्यम् (martyam) - a mortal; अनुप्रशोचेत् (anupraśocet) - should lament over; सुराः च (surāḥ ca) - and the gods; विश्वे च (viśve ca) - and all; जगत् च (jagat ca) - and the world; सर्वम् (sarvam) - entire; उपस्थिताम् (upasthitām) - arrived; वैकृतिम् (vaikṛtim) - alteration; आनमन्ति (ānamanti) - bow to;]
(Do not thus grieve, do not weep, Devayānī; one like you should not lament over a mortal. And the gods, and all, and the entire world bow to the alteration that has arrived.)
Do not grieve like this, and do not weep, Devayānī. One such as you should not mourn for a mortal. The gods, all beings, and the whole world bow before the change that has come. (01-71-36)

(Whose most venerable grandfather was Aṅgiras; and also whose father was Bṛhaspati, rich in austerity. That son of the seer, and also, or even, grandson, how should I not grieve for him, I not weep? (01-71-37))
How could I not mourn and weep for him, the son of the seer, or even his grandson, whose most venerable grandfather was Aṅgiras and whose father was Bṛhaspati, rich in austerity? (01-71-37)
स ब्रह्मचारी च तपोधनश्च; सदोत्थितः कर्मसु चैव दक्षः। कचस्य मार्गं प्रतिपत्स्ये न भोक्ष्ये; प्रियो हि मे तात कचोऽभिरूपः ॥०१-७१-३८॥
sa brahmacārī ca tapodhanaśca; sadotthitaḥ karmasu caiva dakṣaḥ। kacasya mārgaṃ pratipatsye na bhokṣye; priyo hi me tāta kaco'bhirūpaḥ ॥01-71-38॥
[स (sa) - he; ब्रह्मचारी (brahmacārī) - a celibate student of sacred knowledge; च (ca) - and; तपोधनः (tapodhanaḥ) - one whose wealth is austerity; च (ca) - and; सदा (sadā) - always; उत्थितः (utthitaḥ) - risen, ready; कर्मसु (karmasu) - in duties, in actions; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; दक्षः (dakṣaḥ) - skilled, competent; कचस्य (kacasya) - of Kaca; मार्गम् (mārgam) - path, way; प्रतिपत्स्ये (pratipatsye) - I shall follow, I shall resort to; न (na) - not; भोक्ष्ये (bhokṣye) - I shall eat, I shall enjoy; प्रियः (priyaḥ) - dear; हि (hi) - indeed, for; मे (me) - to me, my; तात (tāta) - O father; कचः (kacaḥ) - Kaca; अभिरूपः (abhirūpaḥ) - handsome, pleasing in form;]
(He is a brahmacārī and one whose wealth is austerity; always risen, and indeed skilled in duties. Kaca's path I shall follow; I shall not eat, for Kaca, handsome, is dear to me, O father. (01-71-38))
He is a celibate student and an ascetic whose wealth is austerity; he is always diligent and skilled in his duties. I shall follow Kaca's path and I shall not eat, O father, for handsome Kaca is dear to me. (01-71-38)

asaṃśayaṃ māmasurā dviṣanti; ye me śiṣyaṃ nāgasaṃ sūdayanti। abrahmaṇaṃ kartumicchanti raudrā; ste māṃ yathā prastutaṃ dānavairhi ॥ apyasya pāpasya bhavedihāntaḥ; kaṃ brahmahatyā na dahedapīndram ॥01-71-39॥

(Without doubt, me the Asuras hate; who my disciple, not guilty, slay. To make him a non-Brahmin the fierce ones desire; they, as indeed set forth by the Dānavas, [act against] me. Even of this sin may there be here an end; whom would the killing of a Brahmin not burn, even Indra? (01-71-39))
Surely the Asuras hate me, who slay my innocent disciple. Those fierce ones desire to make him a non-Brahmin; as indeed set forth by the Dānavas, they act against me. May there be an end here even to this sin; whom would the sin of killing a Brahmin not burn, even Indra? (01-71-39)

(Incited by Devayānī, the great seer again called; for Kāvya indeed, with agitation itself, called Kaca, the son of Bṛhaspati. (01-71-40))
Urged by Devayānī, the great seer Kāvya again summoned Kaca, the son of Bṛhaspati, in agitation. (01-71-40)
गुरोर्भीतो विद्यया चोपहूतः; शनैर्वाचं जठरे व्याजहार। तमब्रवीत्केन पथोपनीतो; ममोदरे तिष्ठसि ब्रूहि विप्र ॥०१-७१-४१॥
gurorbhīto vidyayā copahūtaḥ; śanairvācaṃ jaṭhare vyājahāra। tamabravītkena pathopanīto; mamodare tiṣṭhasi brūhi vipra ॥01-71-41॥
[गुरोः (guroḥ) - of the teacher; भीतः (bhītaḥ) - afraid; विद्यया (vidyayā) - by knowledge; च (ca) - and; उपहूतः (upahūtaḥ) - summoned; शनैः (śanaiḥ) - slowly; वाचम् (vācam) - speech; जठरे (jaṭhare) - in the belly; व्याजहार (vyājahāra) - uttered; तम् (tam) - to him; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; केन (kena) - by what; पथा (pathā) - path; उपनीतः (upanītaḥ) - led near; मम (mama) - my; उदरे (udare) - in the belly; तिष्ठसि (tiṣṭhasi) - you remain; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - speak; विप्र (vipra) - O inspired sage;]
(Afraid of the teacher and summoned by knowledge, slowly speech in the belly he uttered. To him he said, by what path, led near, do you remain in my belly? Speak, O Brahmin. (01-71-41))
Afraid of his teacher and called forth by the knowledge, he slowly spoke from within the belly. He said to him, by what path were you brought here, and why do you remain in my belly? Tell me, O Brahmin. (01-71-41)

bhavatprasādānna jahāti māṃ smṛtiḥ; smare ca sarvaṃ yacca yathā ca vṛttam। na tvevaṃ syāttapaso vyayo me; tataḥ kleśaṃ ghoramimaṃ sahāmi ॥01-71-42॥

(By your grace, memory does not leave me; and I remember all, whatever and how it happened. But in this way there would not be a loss of my austerity; therefore I endure this terrible affliction.)

असुरैः सुरायां भवतोऽस्मि दत्तो; हत्वा दग्ध्वा चूर्णयित्वा च काव्य। ब्राह्मीं मायामासुरी चैव माया; त्वयि स्थिते कथमेवातिवर्तेत् ॥०१-७१-४३॥
asuraiḥ surāyāṃ bhavato'smi datto; hatvā dagdhvā cūrṇayitvā ca kāvya। brāhmīṃ māyāmāsurī caiva māyā; tvayi sthite kathamevātivartet ॥01-71-43॥
[असुरैः (asuraiḥ) - by the Asuras; सुरायाम् (surāyām) - in liquor; भवतः (bhavataḥ) - of you; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; दत्तः (dattaḥ) - placed; हत्वा (hatvā) - having killed; दग्ध्वा (dagdhvā) - having burned; चूर्णयित्वा (cūrṇayitvā) - having pulverized; च (ca) - and; काव्य (kāvya) - O Kāvya; ब्राह्मीम् (brāhmīm) - Brahmic; मायाम् (māyām) - māyā, power of wondrous artifice; आसुरी (āsurī) - Asuric; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; माया (māyā) - māyā, power of wondrous artifice; त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; स्थिते (sthite) - being present; कथम् (katham) - how; एव (eva) - indeed; अतिवर्तेत् (ativartet) - could surpass;]
(By the Asuras, in your liquor, I have been placed; having killed, having burned, and having pulverized, O Kāvya. The Brahmic māyā, and indeed Asuric māyā, when you are present, how indeed could it surpass?)
The Asuras killed me, burned me, ground me to powder, and put me into your liquor, O Kāvya. While you are present, how indeed could Asuric māyā surpass Brahmic māyā? (01-71-43)

[किं (kiṃ) - what; ते (te) - for you; प्रियम् (priyam) - dear thing; करवाणि (karavāṇi) - shall I do; अद्य (adya) - now; वत्से (vatse) - O child; वधेन (vadhena) - by killing; मे (me) - of me; जीवितम् (jīvitam) - life; स्यात् (syāt) - would be; कचस्य (kacasya) - of Kaca; न (na) - not; अन्यत्र (anyatra) - otherwise; कुक्षेः (kukṣeḥ) - of the belly; मम (mama) - my; भेदनेन (bhedanena) - by splitting; दृश्येत् (dṛśyet) - would be seen; कचः (kacaḥ) - Kaca; मद् (mad) - me; गतः (gataḥ) - gone; देवयानि (devayāni) - O Devayānī;]
(What dear thing shall I do for you now, O child; by my killing, life would be for Kaca. Not otherwise than by the splitting of my belly would Kaca, gone into me, be seen, O Devayānī.)
What dear thing can I do for you now, my child? Kaca could live only through my death. O Devayānī, Kaca, who has entered me, could be seen only by splitting open my belly. (01-71-44)

dvau māṁ śokāvagnikalpau dahetāṁ; kacasya nāśastava caivopaghātaḥ। kacasya nāśe mama nāsti śarma; tavopaghāte jīvituṁ nāsmi śaktā ॥01-71-45॥
[द्वौ (dvau) - two; माम् (mām) - me; शोकौ (śokau) - two sorrows; अग्निकल्पौ (agnikalpau) - resembling fire; दहेताम् (dahetām) - would burn; कचस्य (kacasya) - of Kaca; नाशः (nāśaḥ) - destruction; तव (tava) - of you; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; उपघातः (upaghātaḥ) - injury; कचस्य (kacasya) - of Kaca; नाशे (nāśe) - in destruction; मम (mama) - for me; न (na) - not; अस्ति (asti) - there is; शर्म (śarma) - happiness; तव (tava) - of you; उपघाते (upaghāte) - in injury; जीवितुम् (jīvitum) - to live; न (na) - not; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; शक्ता (śaktā) - able;]
(Two sorrows, fire-like, would burn me: Kaca's destruction and indeed injury to you. In Kaca's destruction there is no happiness for me; in injury to you I am not able to live. (01-71-45))
Two griefs as fierce as fire would burn me: the loss of Kaca and, indeed, harm to you. If Kaca is destroyed, I have no happiness; if you are harmed, I am not able to live. (01-71-45)

saṁsiddharūpo'si bṛhaspateḥ suta; yattvāṁ bhaktaṁ bhajate devayānī। vidyāmimāṁ prāpnuhi jīvanīṁ tvaṁ; na cedindraḥ kacarūpī tvamadya ॥01-71-46॥
[संसिद्ध-रूपः असि (saṁsiddha-rūpaḥ asi) - you are of fully accomplished form; बृहस्पतेः (bṛhaspateḥ) - of Bṛhaspati; सुत (suta) - O son; यत् (yat) - because; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; भक्तम् (bhaktam) - devoted; भजते (bhajate) - loves; देवयानी (devayānī) - Devayānī; विद्याम् (vidyām) - knowledge; इमाम् (imām) - this; प्राप्नुहि (prāpnuhi) - obtain; जीवनीम् (jīvanīm) - life-giving; त्वम् (tvam) - you; न (na) - not; चेत् (cet) - if; इन्द्रः (indraḥ) - Indra; कच-रूपी (kaca-rūpī) - having the form of Kaca; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अद्य (adya) - today;]
(You are of fully accomplished form, O son of Bṛhaspati; since Devayānī loves you as devoted. Obtain this life-giving knowledge, you; and if not, you are Indra in Kaca’s form today. (01-71-46))
You have attained your aim, O son of Bṛhaspati, since Devayānī loves you as one devoted. Obtain this life-giving knowledge; otherwise, today you are Indra in the form of Kaca. (01-71-46)
न निवर्तेत्पुनर्जीवन्कश्चिदन्यो ममोदरात्। ब्राह्मणं वर्जयित्वैकं तस्माद्विद्यामवाप्नुहि ॥०१-७१-४७॥
na nivartetpunarjīvankaścidanyo mamodarāt। brāhmaṇaṃ varjayitvaikaṃ tasmādvidyāmavāpnuhi ॥01-71-47॥
[न (na) - not; निवर्तेत् (nivartet) - would return; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; जीवन् (jīvan) - living; कश्चित् (kaścit) - anyone; अन्यः (anyaḥ) - other; मम (mama) - my; उदरात् (udarāt) - from the belly; ब्राह्मणम् (brāhmaṇam) - a Brāhmaṇa; वर्जयित्वा (varjayitvā) - having excluded; एकम् (ekam) - one; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; विद्याम् (vidyām) - knowledge; अवाप्नुहि (avāpnuhi) - obtain;]
(Not would return again living any other from my belly, having excluded one Brāhmaṇa; therefore obtain knowledge. (01-71-47))
No other person would return alive again from my belly, except one Brāhmaṇa; therefore obtain the knowledge. (01-71-47)
पुत्रो भूत्वा भावय भावितो मा; मस्माद्देहादुपनिष्क्रम्य तात। समीक्षेथा धर्मवतीमवेक्षां; गुरोः सकाशात्प्राप्य विद्यां सविद्यः ॥०१-७१-४८॥
putro bhūtvā bhāvaya bhāvito mā; masmāddehādupaniṣkramya tāta। samīkṣethā dharmavatīmavekṣāṃ; guroḥ sakāśātprāpya vidyāṃ savidyaḥ ॥01-71-48॥
[पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; भावय (bhāvaya) - nurture, cause to thrive; भावितः (bhāvitaḥ) - nurtured, caused to thrive; माम् (mām) - me; अस्मात् (asmāt) - from this; देहात् (dehāt) - from the body; उपनिष्क्रम्य (upaniṣkramya) - having gone forth; तात (tāta) - dear one; समीक्षेथा (samīkṣethā) - you should regard; धर्मवतीम् (dharmavatīm) - possessing dharma, righteous; अवेक्षाम् (avekṣām) - consideration, regard; गुरोः (guroḥ) - of the teacher; सकाशात् (sakāśāt) - from the presence; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having obtained; विद्याम् (vidyām) - knowledge, learning; सविद्यः (savidyaḥ) - endowed with knowledge;]
(Having become a son, nurture me, who have nurtured you; having gone forth from this body, dear one, you should regard a dharma-possessing consideration; having obtained knowledge from the teacher's presence, endowed with knowledge. (01-71-48))
Having become a son, care for me, who have cared for you. O dear one, after departing from this body, you should show righteous regard; having obtained learning from the teacher, be endowed with knowledge. (01-71-48)

guroḥ sakāśātsamavāpya vidyāṃ; bhittvā kukṣiṃ nirvicakrāma vipraḥ। kaco'bhirūpo dakṣiṇaṃ brāhmaṇasya; śuklātyaye paurṇamāsyāmivenduḥ ॥01-71-49॥
[गुरोः (guroḥ) - of the preceptor; सकाशात् (sakāśāt) - from proximity, from presence; समवाप्य (samavāpya) - having fully obtained; विद्यां (vidyāṃ) - knowledge, sacred science; भित्त्वा (bhittvā) - having split, having broken open; कुक्षिं (kukṣiṃ) - the belly, abdomen; निर्विचक्राम (nirvicakrāma) - came forth, went out; विप्रः (vipraḥ) - the Brahmin; कचः (kacaḥ) - Kaca; अभिरूपः (abhirūpaḥ) - handsome, of pleasing form; दक्षिणं (dakṣiṇaṃ) - right, southern; ब्राह्मणस्य (brāhmaṇasya) - of the Brāhmaṇa; शुक्ल (śukla) - bright, the bright fortnight; अत्यये (atyaye) - at the end, at the passing; पौर्णमास्याम् (paurṇamāsyām) - on the full-moon day; इव (iva) - like, as; इन्दुः (induḥ) - the moon;]
(Having obtained knowledge from the presence of the preceptor, having split the belly, the Brahmin came forth. Kaca, handsome, through the right side of the Brāhmaṇa, like the moon on the full-moon day at the end of the bright fortnight.)
Having received the sacred knowledge from his preceptor, the handsome Brahmin Kaca split open the right side of the Brāhmaṇa’s abdomen and came out, like the moon on the full-moon day at the end of the bright fortnight. (01-71-49)
दृष्ट्वा च तं पतितं ब्रह्मराशि; मुत्थापयामास मृतं कचोऽपि। विद्यां सिद्धां तामवाप्याभिवाद्य; ततः कचस्तं गुरुमित्युवाच ॥०१-७१-५०॥
dṛṣṭvā ca taṃ patitaṃ brahmarāśi; mutthāpayāmāsa mṛtaṃ kaco'pi। vidyāṃ siddhāṃ tāmavāpyābhivādya; tataḥ kacastaṃ gurumityuvāca ॥01-71-50॥
[दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; च (ca) - and; तम् (tam) - him; पतितम् (patitam) - fallen; ब्रह्मराशिम् (brahmarāśim) - a mass of sacred knowledge; उत्थापयामास (utthāpayāmāsa) - raised up; मृतम् (mṛtam) - dead; कचः (kacaḥ) - Kaca; अपि (api) - too; विद्याम् (vidyām) - knowledge; सिद्धाम् (siddhām) - perfected; ताम् (tām) - that; अवाप्य (avāpya) - having obtained; अभिवाद्य (abhivādya) - having saluted; ततः (tataḥ) - then; कचः (kacaḥ) - Kaca; तम् (tam) - that; गुरुम् (gurum) - guru; इति (iti) - thus; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
(Having seen him fallen, a mass of sacred knowledge, Kacha too raised up the dead one. Having obtained that perfected knowledge and having saluted, then Kacha spoke thus to that guru. (01-71-50))
Seeing that fallen, dead repository of sacred knowledge, Kacha revived him. After obtaining that perfected knowledge and bowing, Kacha then said this to that guru. (01-71-50)
ऋतस्य दातारमनुत्तमस्य; निधिं निधीनां चतुरन्वयानाम्। ये नाद्रियन्ते गुरुमर्चनीयं; पापाँल्लोकांस्ते व्रजन्त्यप्रतिष्ठान् ॥०१-७१-५१॥
ṛtasya dātāramanuttamasya; nidhiṁ nidhīnāṁ caturanvayānām। ye nādriyante gurumarcanīyaṁ; pāpām̐llokāṁste vrajantyapratiṣṭhān ॥01-71-51॥
[ऋतस्य (ṛtasya) - of truth, cosmic order; दातारम् (dātāram) - the giver; अनुत्तमस्य (anuttamasya) - of the unsurpassed; निधिम् (nidhim) - the treasure, repository; निधीनाम् (nidhīnām) - of treasures, repositories; चतुरन्वयानाम् (caturanvayānām) - of the four lineages; ये (ye) - those who; न (na) - not; आद्रियन्ते (ādriyante) - honor, respect; गुरुम् (gurum) - the guru, the weighty teacher; अर्चनीयम् (arcanīyam) - worthy of worship; पापान् (pāpān) - sinful, evil; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds, realms; ते (te) - they; व्रजन्ति (vrajanti) - go, proceed; अप्रतिष्ठान् (apratiṣṭhān) - without foundation, unstable;]
(Those who do not honor the worship-worthy guru, the giver of unsurpassed truth, the treasure of the treasures of the four lineages, they go to sinful worlds without foundation. (01-71-51))
Those who do not revere the worshipful guru, the giver of unsurpassed truth and the treasure among the treasures of the four lineages, go to sinful worlds that have no foundation. (01-71-51)

सुरापानाद्वञ्चनां प्रापयित्वा; सञ्ज्ञानाशं चैव तथातिघोरम्। दृष्ट्वा कचं चापि तथाभिरूपं; पीतं तदा सुरया मोहितेन ॥०१-७१-५२॥
surāpānādvañcanāṃ prāpayitvā; sañjñānāśaṃ caiva tathātighoram। dṛṣṭvā kacaṃ cāpi tathābhirūpaṃ; pītaṃ tadā surayā mohitena ॥01-71-52॥
[सुरापानात् (surāpānāt) - from the drinking of liquor; वञ्चनाम् (vañcanām) - deception; प्रापयित्वा (prāpayitvā) - having caused to attain; सञ्ज्ञानाशम् (sañjñānāśam) - loss of consciousness; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; तथा (tathā) - likewise; अतिघोरम् (atighoram) - very terrible; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; कचम् (kacam) - Kaca; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; तथा (tathā) - likewise; अभिरूपम् (abhirūpam) - handsome; पीतम् (pītam) - drunk, imbibed; तदा (tadā) - then; सुरया (surayā) - by liquor; मोहितेन (mohitena) - by the deluded one;]
(Having caused, from liquor-drinking, deception, and indeed likewise a very terrible loss of consciousness, and having seen Kaca also, likewise handsome, then drunk with liquor by the deluded one.)
Having brought about deception through the drinking of liquor, and also a very terrible loss of consciousness, he then saw the handsome Kaca, who had been drunk with the liquor by the deluded one. (01-71-52)
समन्युरुत्थाय महानुभाव; स्तदोशना विप्रहितं चिकीर्षुः। काव्यः स्वयं वाक्यमिदं जगाद; सुरापानं प्रति वै जातशङ्कः ॥०१-७१-५३॥
samanyurutthāya mahānubhāva; stadōśanā viprahitaṃ cikīrṣuḥ। kāvyaḥ svayaṃ vākyamidaṃ jagāda; surāpānaṃ prati vai jātaśaṅkaḥ ॥01-71-53॥
[समन्युः (samanyuḥ) - with anger; उत्थाय (utthāya) - having risen; महानुभावः (mahānubhāvaḥ) - the great-souled one; तदा (tadā) - then; उशना (uśanā) - Uśanas; विप्र (vipra) - brāhmaṇa; हितम् (hitam) - benefit; चिकीर्षुः (cikīrṣuḥ) - wishing to do; काव्यः (kāvyaḥ) - Kāvya, descendant of Kavi; स्वयम् (svayam) - himself; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - statement; इदम् (idam) - this; जगाद (jagāda) - spoke; सुरा (surā) - liquor; पानम् (pānam) - drinking; प्रति (prati) - regarding; वै (vai) - indeed; जात (jāta) - arisen; शङ्कः (śaṅkaḥ) - suspicion;]
(With anger, having risen, the great-souled one, then Uśanas, wishing to do what was beneficial to the brāhmaṇas, Kāvya himself spoke this statement, indeed having become suspicious regarding liquor-drinking. (01-71-53))
Then the great-souled Uśanas Kāvya rose in anger and, wishing to act for the welfare of the brāhmaṇas, himself spoke these words, having indeed become suspicious about the drinking of liquor. (01-71-53)
यो ब्राह्मणोऽद्य प्रभृतीह कश्चि; न्मोहात्सुरां पास्यति मन्दबुद्धिः। अपेतधर्मो ब्रह्महा चैव स स्या; दस्मिँल्लोके गर्हितः स्यात्परे च ॥०१-७१-५४॥
yo brāhmaṇo'dya prabhṛtīha kaści; nmohātsurāṃ pāsyati mandabuddhiḥ। apetadharmo brahmahā caiva sa syā; dasmim̐lloke garhitaḥ syātpare ca ॥०१-७१-५४॥
[यः (yaḥ) - whoever; ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - a Brāhmaṇa; अद्य (adya) - today; प्रभृति (prabhṛti) - beginning from; इह (iha) - here; कश्चित् (kaścit) - anyone; मोहात् (mohāt) - from delusion; सुराम् (surām) - liquor; पास्यति (pāsyati) - will drink; मन्दबुद्धिः (mandabuddhiḥ) - dull-witted; अपेतधर्मः (apetadharmaḥ) - devoid of dharma; ब्रह्महा (brahmahā) - a slayer of a Brāhmaṇa; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; सः (saḥ) - he; स्यात् (syāt) - would be; अस्मिन् (asmin) - in this; लोके (loke) - world; गर्हितः (garhitaḥ) - censured; स्यात् (syāt) - would be; परे (pare) - in the other; च (ca) - and;]
(Whoever Brāhmaṇa, from today onward here, anyone, from delusion, will drink liquor, dull-witted, devoid of dharma and indeed a Brāhmaṇa-killer he would be; in this world he would be censured, and in the next.)
Any Brāhmaṇa who, from today onward, hereafter drinks liquor out of delusion, being dull-witted, would be devoid of dharma and indeed like a slayer of a Brāhmaṇa. He would be censured in this world and in the next. (01-71-54)
मया चेमां विप्रधर्मोक्तिसीमां; मर्यादां वै स्थापितां सर्वलोके। सन्तो विप्राः शुश्रुवांसो गुरूणां; देवा लोकाश्चोपशृण्वन्तु सर्वे ॥०१-७१-५५॥
mayā cemāṁ vipradharmoktīsīmāṁ; maryādāṁ vai sthāpitāṁ sarvaloke। santo viprāḥ śuśruvāṁso gurūṇāṁ; devā lokāścopaśr̥ṇvantu sarve ॥01-71-55॥
[मया (mayā) - by me; च (ca) - and; इमाम् (imām) - this; विप्र (vipra) - brāhmaṇa; धर्म (dharma) - dharma, sacred duty; उक्ति (ukti) - utterance, teaching; सीमाम् (sīmām) - limit, boundary; मर्यादाम् (maryādām) - boundary, established rule; वै (vai) - indeed; स्थापिताम् (sthāpitām) - established; सर्व (sarva) - all, whole; लोके (loke) - in the world; सन्तः (santaḥ) - virtuous ones, good people; विप्राः (viprāḥ) - brāhmaṇas; शुश्रुवांसः (śuśruvāṁsaḥ) - those who have heard, learned ones; गुरूणाम् (gurūṇām) - of the gurus; देवाः (devāḥ) - gods; लोकाः (lokāḥ) - worlds; च (ca) - and; उपशृण्वन्तु (upaśr̥ṇvantu) - may they listen to, may they hear; सर्वे (sarve) - all;]
(And this limit of the utterance of brāhmaṇa-dharma, a boundary indeed established by me in the whole world, may the virtuous brāhmaṇas, hearers of the gurus, the gods, and all the worlds listen to, all. (01-71-55))
May the virtuous brāhmaṇas learned from their gurus, the gods, and all the worlds hear this rule: the boundary of the teaching on brāhmaṇa-dharma, which has indeed been established by me throughout the world. (01-71-55)
इतीदमुक्त्वा स महानुभाव; स्तपोनिधीनां निधिरप्रमेयः। तान्दानवान्दैवविमूढबुद्धी; निदं समाहूय वचोऽभ्युवाच ॥०१-७१-५६॥
itīdamuktvā sa mahānubhāva; staponidhīnāṃ nidhiraprameyaḥ। tāndānavāndaivavimūḍhabuddhī; nidaṃ samāhūya vaco'bhyuvāca ॥01-71-56॥
[इति (iti) - thus; इदम् (idam) - this; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having said; सः (saḥ) - that he; महान् (mahān) - great; अनुभावः (anubhāvaḥ) - innate power and dignity; तपस् (tapas) - austerity; निधीनाम् (nidhīnām) - of treasuries; निधिः (nidhiḥ) - treasure; अप्रमेयः (aprameyaḥ) - immeasurable; तान् (tān) - those; दानवान् (dānavān) - Dānavas, descendants of Danu; दैव (daiva) - fate; विमूढ (vimūḍha) - bewildered; बुद्धीन् (buddhīn) - intellects; इदम् (idam) - this; समाहूय (samāhūya) - having called together; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech; अभ्युवाच (abhyuvāca) - spoke;]
(Thus, having said this, he, great in innate power, the immeasurable treasure of the treasuries of austerity, having called together those Dānavas, with intellects bewildered by fate, spoke this speech. (01-71-56))
After saying this, that great and dignified one, the immeasurable treasure among the treasures of austerity, summoned those Dānavas whose minds had been bewildered by fate and spoke these words. (01-71-56)
आचक्षे वो दानवा बालिशाः स्थ; सिद्धः कचो वत्स्यति मत्सकाशे। सञ्जीवनीं प्राप्य विद्यां महार्थां; तुल्यप्रभावो ब्रह्मणा ब्रह्मभूतः ॥०१-७१-५७॥
ācakṣe vo dānavā bāliśāḥ stha; siddhaḥ kaco vatsyati matsakāśe। sañjīvanīṃ prāpya vidyāṃ mahārthāṃ; tulyaprabhāvo brahmaṇā brahmabhūtaḥ ॥०१-७१-५७॥
[आचक्षे (ācakṣe) - I declare; I tell; वः (vaḥ) - to you; दानवाः (dānavāḥ) - O descendants of Danu; O Dānavas; बालिशाः (bāliśāḥ) - childish; foolish; स्थ (stha) - you are; सिद्धः (siddhaḥ) - accomplished; successful; कचः (kacaḥ) - Kaca; वत्स्यति (vatsyati) - will dwell; मत् (mat) - my; सकाशे (sakāśe) - in proximity; in presence; सञ्जीवनीम् (sañjīvanīm) - life-restoring; reviving; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having obtained; विद्याम् (vidyām) - knowledge; science; महा (mahā) - great; अर्थाम् (arthām) - in value; in significance; तुल्य (tulya) - equal; प्रभावः (prabhāvaḥ) - power; splendour; ब्रह्मणा (brahmaṇā) - with Brahmā; ब्रह्मभूतः (brahmabhūtaḥ) - become Brahman; having the nature of Brahman;]
(I declare to you, O Dānavas: you are foolish. Kaca, accomplished, will dwell in my presence, having obtained the life-restoring knowledge of great significance, equal in power to Brahmā, become Brahman. (01-71-57))
I tell you, O Dānavas: you are foolish. Kaca has succeeded, and after obtaining the greatly significant science of restoring life, he will remain in my presence, equal in power to Brahmā and having become Brahman-like. (01-71-57)
गुरोरुष्य सकाशे तु दश वर्षशतानि सः। अनुज्ञातः कचो गन्तुमियेष त्रिदशालयम् ॥०१-७१-५८॥
guroruṣya sakāśe tu daśa varṣaśatāni saḥ। anujñātaḥ kaco gantumiyeṣa tridaśālayam ॥01-71-58॥
[गुरोः (guroḥ) - of the teacher; उष्य (uṣya) - having dwelt; सकाशे (sakāśe) - in the presence; तु (tu) - indeed; दश (daśa) - ten; वर्ष (varṣa) - year; शतानि (śatāni) - hundreds; सः (saḥ) - he; अनुज्ञातः (anujñātaḥ) - permitted; कचः (kacaḥ) - Kaca; गन्तुम् (gantum) - to go; इयेष (iyeṣa) - wished; त्रिदश (tridaśa) - the thirty gods; आलयम् (ālayam) - abode;]
(Of the teacher, having dwelt in the presence indeed ten hundreds of years, he, Kaca, being permitted, wished to go to the abode of the thirty gods. (01-71-58))
After dwelling in his teacher's presence for a thousand years, Kaca, with permission, wished to go to the abode of the gods. (01-71-58)
