कतरस्त्वेतयोः पूर्वं देवानामेति सात्म्यताम्। उभयोर्धावतो राजन्सूर्याचन्द्रमसोरिव ॥०१-८७-१॥
katarastvetayoḥ pūrvaṃ devānāmeti sātmyatām। ubhayordhāvato rājansūryācandramasoriva ॥01-87-1॥
[कतरः (kataraḥ) - which one; त्वेतयोः (tv etayoḥ) - of these two, you; पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - before; देवानाम् (devānām) - of the gods; एति (eti) - reaches; सात्म्यताम् (sātmyatām) - assimilation; उभयोः (ubhayoḥ) - of both; धावतो (dhāvato) - running; राजन् (rājan) - O king; सूर्याचन्द्रमसोः (sūryācandramasoḥ) - of the Sun and the Moon; इव (iva) - like;]
(Which one of these two, you, before reaches assimilation with the gods? Of both running, O king, like the Sun and the Moon.)
O king, which of these two reaches assimilation with the gods first, as among the Sun and the Moon when both are racing? (01-87-1)
ययातिरुवाच॥

King Yayāti said.
अनिकेतो गृहस्थेषु कामवृत्तेषु संयतः। ग्राम एव वसन्भिक्षुस्तयोः पूर्वतरं गतः ॥०१-८७-२॥
aniketo gṛhasteṣu kāmavṛtteṣu saṁyataḥ । grāma eva vasanbhikṣustayoḥ pūrvataraṁ gataḥ ॥01-87-2॥
[अनिकेतः (aniketaḥ) - not having a fixed abode; गृहस्थेषु (gṛhasteṣu) - among householders; कामवृत्तेषु (kāmavṛtteṣu) - who live according to desire; संयतः (saṁyataḥ) - self-controlled; ग्राम (grāma) - village; एव (eva) - indeed; वसन् (vasan) - living; भिक्षुः (bhikṣuḥ) - mendicant; तयोः (tayoḥ) - of those two; पूर्वतरं (pūrvataraṁ) - earlier; गतः (gataḥ) - gone (has reached);]
(Not having a fixed abode among householders who live according to desire, self-controlled, indeed living in the village, the mendicant of those two earlier has gone.)
The mendicant, who is self-controlled, not having a fixed abode among householders living by desire and living only in the village, has progressed further than both. (01-87-2)
अप्राप्य दीर्घमायुस्तु यः प्राप्तो विकृतिं चरेत्। तप्येत यदि तत्कृत्वा चरेत्सोऽन्यत्ततस्तपः ॥०१-८७-३॥
aprāpya dīrghamāyus tu yaḥ prāpto vikṛtiṃ caret। tapyeta yadi tat kṛtvā caret so'nyat tatas tapaḥ ॥01-87-3॥
[अप्राप्य (aprāpya) - not attaining; दीर्घम् (dīrgham) - long; आयुः (āyuḥ) - life; तु (tu) - but; यः (yaḥ) - who; प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - having obtained; विकृतिम् (vikṛtim) - change; deviation; चरेत् (caret) - should undertake; तप्येत (tapyeta) - should perform austerity; यदि (yadi) - if; तत् (tat) - that; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; चरेत् (caret) - should undertake; सः (saḥ) - he; अन्यत् (anyat) - another; ततः (tatas) - after that; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity;]
(Not attaining long life but he who, having obtained change, should undertake; should perform austerity; if that having done, should undertake; he, another, after that, austerity.)
If one does not attain long life but having encountered adversity undertakes, he should perform austerity; having done that, if he continues, he should then undertake another austerity. (01-87-3)
यद्वै नृशंसं तदपथ्यमाहु; र्यः सेवते धर्ममनर्थबुद्धिः। अस्वोऽप्यनीशश्च तथैव राजं; स्तदार्जवं स समाधिस्तदार्यम् ॥०१-८७-४॥
yad vai nṛśaṁsaṁ tad apathyam āhuḥ; yaḥ sevate dharmam anarthabuddhiḥ. asvaḥ api anīśaḥ ca tathaiva rājaṁ; tat ārjavam saḥ samādhiḥ tat āryam ॥01-87-4॥
[यद् (yad) - which; वै (vai) - indeed; नृशंसं (nṛśaṁsaṁ) - cruel; तत् (tat) - that; अपथ्यम् (apathyam) - unwholesome; आहु (āhuḥ) - they say; यः (yaḥ) - who; सेवते (sevate) - serves; धर्मम् (dharmam) - duty; अनर्थबुद्धिः (anartha-buddhiḥ) - with wrong understanding; अस्वः (asvaḥ) - not a horse; अपि (api) - even; अनीशः (anīśaḥ) - not capable; च (ca) - and; तथैव (tathaiva) - just so; राजम् (rājam) - king; तत् (tat) - that; आर्जवम् (ārjavam) - straightforwardness; सः (saḥ) - he; समाधिः (samādhiḥ) - tranquility; तत् (tat) - that; आर्यम् (āryam) - nobility;]
(Which indeed cruel, that unwholesome they say; who serves duty with wrong understanding. Not a horse even incapable and just so a king; that straightforwardness, he tranquility, that nobility.)
That which is cruel, they say is unwholesome; he who serves righteousness with wrong judgement. Even a horse that is incapable, and likewise a king—such straightforwardness is not really straightforwardness, such concentration is not concentration, such nobility is not true nobility. (01-87-4)

kenāsi dūtaḥ prahito'dya rāja; nyuvā sragvī darśanīyaḥ suvarcāḥ। kuta āgataḥ katarasyāṃ diśi tva; utāho svit pārthivaṃ sthānam asti॥01-87-5॥

(By whom are you, messenger, sent today, O king; young, wearing a garland, handsome, splendid. From where come (you), in which direction (are) you; or perhaps royal abode (there) is.)
O king, by whom have you, a messenger, been sent today? You are young, garlanded, handsome, splendid. From where have you come, and in which direction? Or perhaps, is there a royal abode (you belong to)? (01-87-5)
ययातिरुवाच॥

इमं भौमं नरकं क्षीणपुण्यः; प्रवेष्टुमुर्वीं गगनाद्विप्रकीर्णः। उक्त्वाहं वः प्रपतिष्याम्यनन्तरं; त्वरन्ति मां ब्राह्मणा लोकपालाः ॥०१-८७-६॥
imaṁ bhaumaṁ narakaṁ kṣīṇapuṇyaḥ; praveṣṭum urvīṁ gaganād viprakīrṇaḥ. uktvā ahaṁ vaḥ prapatiṣyāmi anantaraṁ; tvaranti māṁ brāhmaṇā lokapālāḥ॥01-87-6॥
[इमं (imaṁ) - this; भौमं (bhaumaṁ) - earthly; नरकं (narakaṁ) - hell; क्षीणपुण्यः (kṣīṇapuṇyaḥ) - one whose merit is exhausted; प्रवेष्टुम् (praveṣṭum) - to enter; उर्वीं (urvīṁ) - the earth; गगनात् (gaganāt) - from the sky; विप्रकीर्णः (viprakīrṇaḥ) - cast down; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having said; अहं (ahaṁ) - I; वः (vaḥ) - to you; प्रपतिष्यामि (prapatiṣyāmi) - I shall fall; अनन्तरं (anantaraṁ) - immediately after; त्वरन्ति (tvaranti) - urge; माम् (mām) - me; ब्राह्मणा (brāhmaṇāḥ) - Brahmins; लोकपालाः (lokapālāḥ) - world-guardians;]
(This earthly hell, one whose merit is exhausted, to enter the earth, from the sky cast down. Having said, I to you shall fall immediately after; urge me, Brahmins, world-guardians. (01-87-6))
Having said to you, "I shall fall immediately after," as one whose merit is exhausted enters this earthly hell, cast down from the sky to the earth, the Brahmins and guardians of the worlds urge me. (01-87-6)
सतां सकाशे तु वृतः प्रपात; स्ते सङ्गता गुणवन्तश्च सर्वे। शक्राच्च लब्धो हि वरो मयैष; पतिष्यता भूमितले नरेन्द्र ॥०१-८७-७॥
satāṃ sakāśe tu vṛtaḥ prapāta; ste saṅgatā guṇavantaś ca sarve। śakrāc ca labdho hi varo mayaiṣa; patiṣyatā bhūmitale narendra ॥01-87-7॥
[सतां (satām) - of the virtuous; सकाशे (sakāśe) - in the presence; तु (tu) - but; वृतः (vṛtaḥ) - protected; प्रपात (prapāta) - fall; स्ते (ste) - they; सङ्गता (saṅgatā) - associated; गुणवन्तश्च (guṇavantaś ca) - and possessing virtues; सर्वे (sarve) - all; शक्रात् (śakrāt) - from Indra; च (ca) - and; लब्धः (labdhaḥ) - obtained; हि (hi) - indeed; वरः (varaḥ) - boon; मया (mayā) - by me; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; पतिष्यता (patiṣyatā) - about to fall; भूमितले (bhūmitale) - on the earth's surface; नरेन्द्र (narendra) - O king;]
(Of the virtuous in the presence but protected fall; they associated and possessing virtues all. From Indra and obtained indeed the boon by me this; about to fall on the earth's surface, O king.)
But among the virtuous I was protected from falling, for all of them were associated and possessed excellences. Indeed, this boon was obtained by me from Indra for one about to fall onto the earth, O king. (01-87-7)

पृच्छामि त्वां मा प्रपत प्रपातं; यदि लोकाः पार्थिव सन्ति मेऽत्र। यद्यन्तरिक्षे यदि वा दिवि श्रिताः; क्षेत्रज्ञं त्वां तस्य धर्मस्य मन्ये ॥०१-८७-८॥
pṛcchāmi tvāṃ mā prapata prapātaṃ; yadi lokāḥ pārthiva santi me'tra. yadyantarikṣe yadi vā divi śritāḥ; kṣetrajñaṃ tvāṃ tasya dharmasya manye ॥01-87-8॥
[पृच्छामि (pṛcchāmi) - I ask; त्वां (tvāṃ) - you; मा (mā) - not; प्रपत (prapata) - fall; प्रपातं (prapātaṃ) - precipice; यदि (yadi) - if; लोकाः (lokāḥ) - worlds; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - earthly; सन्ति (santi) - are; मेऽत्र (me'tra) - for me here; यद्यन्तरिक्षे (yadyantarikṣe) - if (they are) in the sky; यदि (yadi) - if; वा (vā) - or; दिवि (divi) - in heaven; श्रिताः (śritāḥ) - abiding; क्षेत्रज्ञं (kṣetrajñaṃ) - knower of the field; त्वां (tvāṃ) - you; तस्य (tasya) - of that; धर्मस्य (dharmasya) - of duty; मन्ये (manye) - I think;]
(I ask you: do not fall into the precipice; if the earthly worlds are for me here, if (they are) in the sky, if or in heaven abiding; I think you are the knower of the field of that duty.)
I ask you, do not fall into the abyss; if the earthly worlds are here for me, or if they abide in the sky or in heaven; I consider you the knower of the domain of that duty. (01-87-8)

यावत्पृथिव्यां विहितं गवाश्वं; सहारण्यैः पशुभिः पर्वतैश्च। तावल्लोका दिवि ते संस्थिता वै; तथा विजानीहि नरेन्द्रसिंह ॥०१-८७-९॥
yāvat pṛthivyāṃ vihitaṃ gavāśvaṃ; sahāraṇyaiḥ paśubhiḥ parvataiś ca. tāvallokā divi te saṃsthitā vai; tathā vijānīhi narendrasimha ॥01-87-9॥
[यावत् (yāvat) - as much as; पृथिव्यां (pṛthivyāṃ) - on the earth; विहितं (vihitaṃ) - is established; गवाश्वं (gavāśvaṃ) - cows and horses; सहारण्यैः (sahāraṇyaiḥ) - along with the wild animals; पशुभिः (paśubhiḥ) - with creatures; पर्वतैश्च (parvataiś ca) - and mountains; तावत् (tāvat) - so many; लोका (lokā) - worlds; दिवि (divi) - in heaven; ते (te) - for you; संस्थिता (saṃsthitā) - are established; वै (vai) - indeed; तथा (tathā) - thus; विजानीहि (vijānīhi) - know; नरेन्द्रसिंह (narendrasimha) - O lion among kings;]
(As much as, on the earth, is established, cows and horses, along with wild animals, with creatures, and mountains; so many worlds in heaven for you are established indeed; thus know, O lion among kings. (01-87-9))
O lion among kings, know that as many cows, horses, wild animals, beasts, and mountains as there are on the earth, so many worlds are indeed established for you in heaven. (01-87-9)

tāṁs te dadāmi mā prapata prapātaṁ; ye me lokā divi rājendra santi. yady antarikṣe yadi vā divi śritā; tān ākrama kṣipram amitra-sāha ॥01-87-10॥
[तान् (tān) - them; ते (te) - to you; ददामि (dadāmi) - I give; मा (mā) - do not; प्रपत (prapata) - fall; प्रपातम् (prapātam) - precipice; ये (ye) - which; मे (me) - my; लोकाः (lokāḥ) - worlds; दिवि (divi) - in heaven; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king of kings; सन्ति (santi) - exist; यदि (yadi) - if; अन्तरिक्षे (antarikṣe) - in the midspace; यदि (yadi) - if; वा (vā) - or; दिवि (divi) - in heaven; श्रिताः (śritāḥ) - resorted; तान् (tān) - them; आक्रम (ākram) - attack; क्षिप्रम् (kṣipram) - quickly; अमित्रसाह (amitra-sāha) - O subduer of foes;]
(Them to you I give; do not fall the precipice. Which my worlds in heaven, O king of kings, exist. If in the midspace, if or in heaven they resorted, them attack quickly, O subduer of foes.)
I grant them to you; do not fall into the abyss. Those worlds of mine which exist in heaven, O king of kings, whether they are in the midspace, or situated in heaven, attack them quickly, O subduer of enemies. (01-87-10)

नास्मद्विधोऽब्राह्मणो ब्रह्मविच्च; प्रतिग्रहे वर्तते राजमुख्य। यथा प्रदेयं सततं द्विजेभ्य; स्तथाददं पूर्वमहं नरेन्द्र ॥०१-८७-११॥
nāsmad-vidho'brāhmaṇo brahma-vicca; pratigrahe vartate rāja-mukhya. yathā pradeyaṃ satataṃ dvijebhya; stathādadaṃ pūrvam ahaṃ narendra ॥01-87-11॥
[न (na) - not; अस्मद्विधः (asmat-vidhaḥ) - like me; of my kind; अब्राह्मणः (abrāhmaṇaḥ) - non-Brahmin; ब्रह्मवित् (brahma-vit) - knower of Brahman; च (ca) - and; प्रतिग्रहे (pratigrahe) - in accepting gifts; वर्तते (vartate) - engages; राजमुख्य (rāja-mukhya) - O chief among kings; यथा (yathā) - just as; प्रदेयम् (pradeyam) - should be given; सततम् (satatam) - always; द्विजेभ्यः (dvijebhyaḥ) - to the twice-born; स्तथा (stathā) - so; आददम् (ādadam) - I received; पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - formerly; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; नरेन्द्र (narendra) - O king;]
(Not one like me, a non-Brahmin and knower of Brahman, O chief of kings, engages in accepting gifts. Just as it should always be given to the twice-born, so I received formerly, O king.)
O king, one such as myself, who is not a Brahmin but a knower of Brahman, should not accept gifts, O best of kings. However, just as gifts are always to be given to the twice-born, so I too formerly accepted, O king. (01-87-11)
नाब्राह्मणः कृपणो जातु जीवे; द्या चापि स्याद्ब्राह्मणी वीरपत्नी। सोऽहं यदैवाकृतपूर्वं चरेयं; विवित्समानः किमु तत्र साधु ॥०१-८७-१२॥
nābrāhmaṇaḥ kṛpaṇo jātu jīve; dyā cāpi syādbrāhmaṇī vīrapatnī. so'ham yadaivākṛtapūrvaṃ careyaṃ; vivitsamānaḥ kimu tatra sādhu ॥01-87-12॥
[न (na) - not; अब्राह्मणः (abrāhmaṇaḥ) - a non-brāhmaṇa; कृपणः (kṛpaṇaḥ) - miserable one; जातु (jātu) - ever; जीवे (jīve) - should live; द्या (dyā) - the earth; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - even; स्यात् (syāt) - should be; ब्राह्मणी (brāhmaṇī) - Brahmin woman; वीरपत्नी (vīrapatnī) - wife of a hero; सः (saḥ) - he; अहम् (aham) - I; यदा (yadā) - when; एव (eva) - indeed; अकृतपूर्वम् (akṛtapūrvam) - never done before; चरेयम् (careyam) - should undertake; विवित्समानः (vivitsamānaḥ) - desiring to know; किम् (kim) - what; उ (u) - indeed; तत्र (tatra) - there; साधु (sādhu) - right;]
(Not a non-brāhmaṇa, miserable one, ever should live; the earth also even should be a Brahmin woman, wife of a hero. He I, when indeed never done before, should undertake; desiring to know, what indeed, there, right (is). (01-87-12))
A non-brāhmaṇa who is miserable should never live; and even the earth ought to be a Brahmin woman, the wife of a hero. So, when I, desiring to understand, would do what has never been done before, what then is the right thing there? (01-87-12)
प्रतर्दन उवाच॥

pṛcchāmi tvāṃ spṛhaṇīyarūpa; pratardano'ham yadi me santi lokāḥ. yadyantarikṣe yadi vā divi śritāḥ; kṣetrajñaṃ tvāṃ tasya dharmasya manye ॥01-87-13॥

(I ask you, of desirable form; Pratardana I am—if for me exist worlds; if in the atmosphere, if or in heaven abiding; the knower of the field you of that dharma I think.)
I ask you, O one of desirable form. I am Pratardana—if there are worlds for me, whether they exist in the atmosphere or in heaven, I consider you the knower of the field for that dharma. (01-87-13)

santi lokā bahavas te narendra; apy ekaikaḥ sapta saptāpy ahāni. madhucyuto ghṛtapṛktā viśokā; ste nāntavantaḥ pratipālayanti ॥01-87-14॥
[सन्ति (santi) - are; exist; लोका (lokā) - worlds; realms; बहवः (bahavaḥ) - many; numerous; ते (te) - those; they; नरेन्द्र (narendra) - O king; अपि (api) - even; एकैकः (ekaikaḥ) - each one; every single one; सप्त (sapta) - seven; सप्तापि (saptāpi) - even the seven; अहानि (ahāni) - days; मधुच्युतः (madhucyutaḥ) - sprinkled with honey; घृतपृक्ताः (ghṛtapṛktāḥ) - mixed with ghee; विशोकाः (viśokāḥ) - free of sorrow; स्ते (ste) - those; न (na) - not; अन्तवन्तः (antavantaḥ) - having end; perishable; प्रतिपालयन्ति (pratipālayanti) - await; watch over;]
(Are worlds many those O king; even each one (of them) seven, even the seven days. Sprinkled with honey, mixed with ghee, free of sorrow; those not having end await.)
O king, there are many worlds; for each, even the seven (sacred) days—sprinkled with honey, mixed with ghee, and free from sorrow—those (pleasures) that are not perishable await.

tāṁs te dadāmi mā prapata prapātaṁ; ye me lokās tava te vai bhavantu. yady antarikṣe yadi vā divi śritā; tān ākrama kṣipram apeta-mohaḥ ॥01-87-15॥
[तांस्ते (tāṁs te) - those (tāṁs); to you (te); ददामि (dadāmi) - I give; मा (mā) - do not; प्रपत (prapata) - fall down; प्रपातं (prapātaṁ) - precipice; ये (ye) - who; मे (me) - my; लोकाः (lokāḥ) - worlds; तव (tava) - your; ते (te) - they; वै (vai) - indeed; भवन्तु (bhavantu) - let them become; यदि (yadi) - if; अन्तरिक्षे (antarikṣe) - in the sky; यदि (yadi) - if; वा (vā) - or; दिवि (divi) - in heaven; श्रिता (śritāḥ) - residing; तान् (tān) - them; आक्रम (ākrama) - go to; क्षिप्रम् (kṣipram) - quickly; अपेतमोहः (apeta-mohaḥ) - freed from delusion;]
(Those to you I give, do not fall down (from) the precipice; who are my worlds, your they indeed let them become. If in the sky, or if residing in heaven, them go to quickly, freed from delusion.)
I grant them to you, do not fall down the precipice; those worlds which are mine, let them now be yours indeed. Whether they reside in the sky or in heaven, quickly go there, freed from delusion. (01-87-15)

न तुल्यतेजाः सुकृतं कामयेत; योगक्षेमं पार्थिव पार्थिवः सन्। दैवादेशादापदं प्राप्य विद्वां; श्चरेन्नृशंसं न हि जातु राजा ॥०१-८७-१६॥
na tulyatejāḥ sukṛtaṃ kāmayeta; yogakṣemaṃ pārthiva pārthivaḥ san. daivādeśād āpadaṃ prāpya vidvān; na hi jātu rājā nṛśaṃsaṃ caret ॥01-87-16॥
[न (na) - not; तुल्यतेजाः (tulyatejāḥ) - of equal splendor; सुकृतं (sukṛtam) - good deed; कामयेत (kāmayeta) - should desire; योगक्षेमं (yogakṣemam) - acquisition and preservation; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - O king; पार्थिवः (pārthivaḥ) - king; सन् (san) - being; दैवादेशात् (daivādeśāt) - by divine ordainment; आपदं (āpadam) - calamity; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having obtained; विद्वान् (vidvān) - the wise one; नृशंसं (nṛśaṃsam) - cruel act; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; जातु (jātu) - ever; राजा (rājā) - the king;]
(Not of equal splendor good deed should desire; acquisition and preservation O king king being. By divine ordainment calamity having obtained the wise one not cruel act indeed ever the king should do.)
O king, a person of equal splendor should not desire good deeds only for acquisition and preservation; being a king, even upon facing calamity due to fate, a wise king should never commit a cruel act. (01-87-16)
धर्म्यं मार्गं चेतयानो यशस्यं; कुर्यान्नृपो धर्ममवेक्षमाणः। न मद्विधो धर्मबुद्धिः प्रजान; न्कुर्यादेवं कृपणं मां यथात्थ ॥०१-८७-१७॥
dharmyaṃ mārgaṃ cetayāno yaśasyaṃ; kuryān nṛpo dharmam avekṣamāṇaḥ। na mad-vidho dharma-buddhiḥ prajāḥ na kuryād evaṃ kṛpaṇaṃ māṃ yathāttha॥01-87-17॥
[धर्म्यं (dharmyaṃ) - righteous; मार्गं (mārgaṃ) - path; चेतयानः (cétayānaḥ) - reflecting upon; यशस्यं (yaśasyaṃ) - glorious; कुर्यात् (kuryāt) - should do; नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - king; धर्मम् (dharmam) - righteousness; अवेक्षमाणः (avekṣamāṇaḥ) - having regard for; न (na) - not; मद्विधः (mad-vidhaḥ) - one like me; धर्मबुद्धिः (dharma-buddhiḥ) - with understanding of righteousness; प्रजान् (prajān) - subjects; न (na) - not; कुर्यात् (kuryāt) - should do; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; कृपणम् (kṛpaṇam) - ignoble; माम् (mām) - to me; यथात्थ (yathāttha) - as you say;]
(Righteous path reflecting upon glorious, should do king righteousness having regard for. Not one like me with understanding of righteousness subjects not should do thus ignoble to me as you say.)
A king should follow a righteous and glorious path, reflecting and being mindful of righteousness. Someone like me, with a mind set on dharma, should not do to my subjects something as ignoble as you have suggested. (01-87-17)
कुर्यामपूर्वं न कृतं यदन्यै; र्विवित्समानः किमु तत्र साधु। ब्रुवाणमेवं नृपतिं ययातिं; नृपोत्तमो वसुमनाब्रवीत्तम् ॥०१-८७-१८॥
kuryāmapūrvaṃ na kṛtaṃ yadanyaiḥ; vivitsamānaḥ kimu tatra sādhu. bruvāṇamevaṃ nṛpatiṃ yayātiṃ; nṛpottamo vasumanābravīttam ॥01-87-18॥
[कुर्याम (kuryāma) - may we do;’ अपूर्वं (apūrvaṃ) - unprecedented;’ न (na) - not;’ कृतं (kṛtam) - done;’ यत् (yat) - which;’ अन्यैः (anyaiḥ) - by others;’ विवित्समानः (vivitsamānaḥ) - wishing to know;’ किमु (kimu) - why not;’ तत्र (tatra) - there;’ साधु (sādhu) - proper;’ ब्रुवाणम् (bruvāṇam) - speaking;’ एवं (evaṃ) - thus;’ नृपतिम् (nṛpatim) - king;’ ययातिम् (yayātim) - Yayāti;’ नृपः-उत्तमः (nṛpaḥ uttamaḥ) - the best of kings;’ वसुमना (vasumanā) - Vasumanas;’ अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;’ तम् (tam) - to him;’;]
(May we do what is unprecedented, not done by others; wishing to know, why not proper there. Thus speaking to King Yayāti, the best of kings, Vasumanas said to him.)
Vasumanas, the best of kings, thus spoke to King Yayāti: "Should we not do something unprecedented, not done by others? Why should what is right not be attempted there?" (01-87-18)
