pṛcchāmi tvāṃ vasumanā rauśadaśvi; ryadyasti loko divi mahyaṃ narendra. yadyantarikṣe prathito mahātma; nkṣetrajñaṃ tvāṃ tasya dharmasya manye ॥01-88-1॥

(I ask you, O possessor of wealth, O descendant of Ruśadaśva: if there is a world in heaven for me, O king; if in the mid-space (antarikṣa) it is well-known, O great-souled, I consider you the knower of that dharma.)
I ask you, O wealthy one, O descendant of Ruśadaśva: If there is a world in heaven for me, O king, or if it is renowned in the mid-space, O great-souled, I consider you to be the knower of that dharma. (01-88-1)

[यत् (yat) - that which; अन्तरिक्षम् (antarikṣam) - space; पृथिवी (pṛthivī) - earth; दिशः (diśaḥ) - directions; च (ca) - and; यत् (yat) - that which; तेजसा (tejasā) - by brilliance; तपते (tapate) - shines; भानुमान् (bhānumān) - the Sun; च (ca) - and; लोकाः (lokāḥ) - worlds; तावन्तः (tāvantaḥ) - as many as those; दिवि (divi) - in heaven; संस्थिता (saṃsthitā) - established; वै (vai) - indeed; ते (te) - they; न (na) - not; अन्तवन्तः (antavantaḥ) - having an end; प्रतिपालयन्ति (pratipālayanti) - guard; ॥०१-८८-२॥ (॥01-88-2॥) -;]
(That which (is) space, earth and directions; that which by brilliance shines (the) Sun and (the) worlds as many as those established in heaven indeed; they, not having an end, guard.)
Space, earth, and the directions; that which shines with brilliance as the Sun, and all those worlds established in heaven—these, being endless, are forever safeguarded. (01-88-2)

tāṁs te dadāmi pat ma prapātaṁ; ye me lokās tava te vai bhavantu. krīṇīṣv enāṁs tṛṇakena api rājan; na pratigrahas te yadi samyak-praduṣṭaḥ ॥01-88-3॥
[तांस् (tāṁs) - them; ते (te) - to you; ददामि (dadāmi) - I give; पत (pat) - do not fall; मा (mā) - not; प्रपातं (prapātaṁ) - into downfall; ये (ye) - who; मे (me) - mine; लोकाः (lokāḥ) - worlds; तव (tava) - yours; ते (te) - they; वै (vai) - indeed; भवन्तु (bhavantu) - let them be; क्रीणीष्व (krīṇīṣva) - purchase; एनान् (enān) - these; स्तृणकेनापि (tṛṇakena api) - even with a blade of grass; राजन् (rājan) - O king; न (na) - not; प्रतिग्रहः (pratigrahaḥ) - acceptance (of a gift); ते (te) - your; यदि (yadi) - if; सम्यक् (samyak) - completely; प्रदुष्टः (praduṣṭaḥ) - corrupt;]
(Them to you I give; do not fall into downfall. Who are my worlds, let them indeed be yours. Purchase these even with a blade of grass, O king; not (let it be) acceptance of a gift for you if completely corrupt.)
I give them to you; do not fall into ruin. The worlds that are mine, let them indeed be yours. Buy them from me, even with a blade of grass, O king; let this not be simply a gift to you if full corruption is present. (01-88-3)

न मिथ्याहं विक्रयं वै स्मरामि; वृथा गृहीतं शिशुकाच्छङ्कमानः। कुर्यां न चैवाकृतपूर्वमन्यै; र्विवित्समानः किमु तत्र साधु ॥०१-८८-४॥
na mithyāhaṁ vikrayaṁ vai smarāmi; vṛthā gṛhītaṁ śiśukācchaṅkamānaḥ। kuryāṁ na caivākṛtapūrvam anyair; vivitsamānaḥ kim u tatra sādhu ॥01-88-4॥
[न (na) - not; मिथ्या (mithyā) - falsely; अहं (ahaṁ) - I; विक्रयं (vikrayaṁ) - sale; वै (vai) - indeed; स्मरामि (smarāmi) - I remember; वृथा (vṛthā) - in vain; गृहीतं (gṛhītaṁ) - taken; शिशुकात् (śiśukāt) - from a child; शङ्कमानः (śaṅkamānaḥ) - being doubtful; कुर्यां (kuryāṁ) - I would do; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - certainly; अकृतपूर्वम् (akṛtapūrvam) - never done before; अन्यैः (anyaiḥ) - by others; विवित्समानः (vivitsamānaḥ) - desiring to know; किम् (kim) - what; उ (u) - indeed; तत्र (tatra) - in that; साधु (sādhu) - good;]
(Not falsely I sale indeed remember; in vain taken from a child, being doubtful. I would not and certainly never done before by others, desiring to know—what indeed is good in that?)
I do not recall ever making a false sale; nor have I wrongly taken anything from a child, being doubtful. I would certainly not do what has never been done before by others; wishing to know, what good indeed is there in that? (01-88-4)

(Them you worlds attain, O king; by me bestowed—if not acceptable the purchase by you. I not them indeed shall take back, O ruler of men; all worlds your, these indeed let them be. (01-88-5))
O king, do you attain those worlds; they have been given by me. If you do not desire to purchase them, I shall not take them back, O ruler of men; let all these worlds indeed be yours. (01-88-5)
शिबिरुवाच॥

pṛcchāmi tvāṃ śibira-uśīnaro'ham; mamāpi lokā yadi santīha tāta. yadyantarikṣe yadi vā divi śritāḥ; kṣetrajñaṃ tvāṃ tasya dharmasya manye ॥01-88-6॥

(I ask you, Śibira, king of Uśīnara, I—if my own worlds exist here, dear one, if in the sky or if residing in heaven; you, the knower of that dharma, I consider.)
I ask you, Śibira of the Uśīnaras—do my worlds exist here, dear one? Whether they are in the sky or residing in heaven, I consider you to be the knower of the true nature of dharma. (01-88-6)
ययातिरुवाच॥

na tvaṃ vācā hṛdayenāpi vidvan parīpsamānān nāvamamsthā narendra. tenānantā divi lokāḥ śritās te vidyudrūpāḥ svanavanto mahāntaḥ ॥01-88-7॥
[न (na) - not; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; वाचा (vācā) - by speech; हृदयेन (hṛdayena) - by heart; अपि (api) - even; विद्वन् (vidvan) - O wise one; परीप्समानान् (parīpsamānān) - those desiring (something); न (na) - not; अवमंस्था (avamamsthā) - you did belittle; नरेन्द्र (narendra) - O lord of men; तेन (tena) - therefore; अनन्ताः (anantāḥ) - endless; दिवि (divi) - in heaven; लोकाः (lokāḥ) - worlds; श्रिताः (śritāḥ) - attained; ते (te) - by you; विद्युद्रूपाः (vidyudrūpāḥ) - having the form of lightning; स्वनवन्तः (svanavantaḥ) - resounding; महान्तः (mahāntaḥ) - great;]
(Not you by speech by heart even, O wise one, those desiring not did belittle, O lord of men. Therefore endless in heaven worlds attained by you, having the form of lightning, resounding, great.)
You, O wise one, neither by speech nor by heart, ever belittled those who sought (rewards), O lord of men. Therefore, in heaven, you have attained endless worlds, resplendent, resounding, and great, like lightning. (01-88-7)
शिबिरुवाच॥

tāṁs tvaṁ lokān pratipadyasva rājan maya dattān yadi neṣṭaḥ krayas te. na cāham tān pratipatsyeha dattvā; yatra gatvā tvam upāsse ha lokān ॥01-88-8॥

(Those you worlds attain, O king, by me given, if not desired purchase for you. Not and I those would take back here having given; where having gone you worship indeed worlds.)
O king, you attain those worlds that have been given by me; if you do not wish to purchase them, then I will not take them back here after giving them—wherever you go, you will indeed worship those worlds. (01-88-8)
ययातिरुवाच॥

yathā tvam indrapratimaprabhāva; ste cāpy anantā naradeva lokāḥ। tathādya loke na rame’nyadatte; tasmāc chibe nābhinandāmi dāyam ॥01-88-9॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; त्वम् (tvam) - you; इन्द्रप्रतिमप्रभाव (indrapratimaprabhāva) - having Indra-like majesty; स्ते (ste) - those; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अनन्ता (anantā) - endless; नरदेव (naradeva) - king (O lord among men); लोकाः (lokāḥ) - worlds; तथा (tathā) - similarly; अद्य (adya) - today; लोके (loke) - in the world; न (na) - not; रमे (rame) - I delight; अन्यदत्ते (anyadatte) - in what is given by another; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; शिबे (shibe) - O Śibi; न (na) - not; अभिनन्दामि (abhinandāmi) - I accept; दायम् (dāyam) - the share;]
(Just as you, having Indra-like majesty, also those endless worlds, O king, similarly, today in the world, I do not delight in what is given by another; therefore, O Śibi, I do not accept the share.)
Just as you possess majesty equal to Indra and endless realms, O king, so now, in this world, I do not delight in gifts from others; therefore, O Śibi, I do not accept the share. (01-88-9)

na cēdaikaikaśo rājanlokānnaḥ pratinandasi। sarvē pradāya bhavatē gantārō narakaṃ vayam ॥01-88-10॥
[न (na) - not; चेत् (cēt) - if; एकैकशः (ekaikaśaḥ) - severally; individually; राजन् (rājan) - O king; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; नः (naḥ) - our; (for us; to us;) प्रतिनन्दसि (pratinandasi) - you grant; you give; सर्वे (sarvē) - all; प्रदाय (pradāya) - having given; giving; भवते (bhavatē) - to you; गन्तारः (gantāraḥ) - goers; who go; नरकं (narakaṃ) - to hell; वयम् (vayam) - we;]
(If not, O king, you grant the worlds to us one by one; all, having given (them) to you, we go to hell.)
If you, O king, do not grant us the worlds individually, then all of us, having given them to you, will go to hell. (01-88-10)

yadarhāya dadadhvaṃ tatsantaḥ satyānṛśaṃsyataḥ। ahaṃ tu nābhidhṛṣṇomi yatkṛtaṃ na mayā purā॥01-88-11॥
[यत् (yat) - which; अर्हाय (arhāya) - to the deserving; ददध्वं (dadadhvam) - you (all) give; तत् (tat) - that; सन्तः (santaḥ) - good people; सत्य-अनृशंस्यतः (satya-anṛśaṃsyataḥ) - from truth and compassion; अहम् (aham) - I; तु (tu) - but; न (na) - not; अभिधृष्णोमि (abhidhṛṣṇomi) - I dare; यत् (yat) - which; कृतम् (kṛtam) - has been done; न (na) - not; मया (mayā) - by me; पुरा (purā) - before;]
(Which to the deserving you give, that, good people, from truth and compassion. I, however, do not dare, which has been done not by me before.)
Good people give that which is deserved, motivated by truth and compassion. But I do not dare claim what has not been previously done by me. (01-88-11)

kasyai te pratidṛśyante rathāḥ pañca hiraṇmayāḥ। uccaiḥ santaḥ prakāśante jvalanto'gniśikhā iva॥01-88-12॥
[कस्य (kasya) - of whom; एते (ete) - these; प्रतिदृश्यन्ते (pratidṛśyante) - appear; रथाः (rathāḥ) - chariots; पञ्च (pañca) - five; हिरण्मयाः (hiraṇmayāḥ) - golden; उच्चैः (uccaiḥ) - high; सन्तः (santaḥ) - being; प्रकाशन्ते (prakāśante) - shine; ज्वलन्तः (jvalantaḥ) - blazing; अग्निशिखा (agniśikhā) - flame of fire; इव (iva) - like;]
(Of whom these five golden chariots appear, being high they shine, blazing like a flame of fire.)
To whom do these five golden chariots belong that are seen? They appear lofty, shining brightly, blazing like flames of fire. (01-88-12)

yuṣmān ete hi vakṣyanti rathāḥ pañca hiraṇmayāḥ. uccaiḥ santaḥ prakāśante jvalanto'gnaśikhā iva ॥01-88-13॥

(Mount the chariot, O king, stride forth through the sky. We also shall follow when the time will become.)
O king, mount the chariot and go forth through the sky. We too shall follow when the time comes. (01-88-14)

Now, we all, along with him who has conquered heaven, must go. This dust-free path to the abode of the gods is visible for us. (01-88-15)

(They, having mounted the chariots all, departed, the best among kings, advancing towards heaven with splendors, enveloping the heavens and earth with dharma.)
They all, having mounted their chariots, departed—the foremost among kings—advancing to heaven with their splendor, enveloping both heaven and earth with righteousness. (01-88-16)

(I think earlier alone am goer; friend and Indra in every way my great-souled. Why thus Śibi, Uśīnara this alone went beyond with all speed the vehicles.)
I think I am the first to go alone; my friend Indra is truly noble in every way. So why did this Śibi, Uśīnara by name, go past all the vehicles alone with such speed? (01-88-17)

अददाद्देवयानाय यावद्वित्तमविन्दत। उशीनरस्य पुत्रोऽयं तस्माच्छ्रेष्ठो हि नः शिबिः ॥०१-८८-१८॥
adadād devayānāya yāvad vittam avindata। uśīnarasya putro'yaṁ tasmāc chreṣṭho hi naḥ śibiḥ॥01-88-18॥
[अददात् (adadāt) - he gave; देवयानाय (devayānāya) - to Devayāna; यावत् (yāvat) - as much as; वित्तम् (vittam) - wealth; अविन्दत (avindata) - he obtained; उशीनरस्य (uśīnarasya) - of Uśīnara; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; अयम् (ayam) - this; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; श्रेष्ठः (śreṣṭhaḥ) - best; हि (hi) - indeed; नः (naḥ) - to us; शिबिः (śibiḥ) - Śibi;]
(He gave to Devayāna as much wealth as he obtained. Of Uśīnara, this son, therefore, is indeed the best to us, Śibi.)
He gave to Devayāna all the wealth he had obtained. This son of Uśīnara, Śibi, is thus truly the best among us. (01-88-18)
दानं तपः सत्यमथापि धर्मो; ह्रीः श्रीः क्षमा सौम्य तथा तितिक्षा। राजन्नेतान्यप्रतिमस्य राज्ञः; शिबेः स्थितान्यनृशंसस्य बुद्ध्या ॥ एवंवृत्तो ह्रीनिषेधश्च यस्मा; त्तस्माच्छिबिरत्यगाद्वै रथेन ॥०१-८८-१९॥

(Giving, austerity, truth and also righteousness; modesty, fortune, forbearance, gentleness and patience— O king, these qualities of the incomparable king Śibi, established in the mind of the compassionate by understanding. Thus-conducted, and because there was denial of modesty, therefore Śibi indeed departed by chariot. (01-88-19))
O king, generosity, austerity, truthfulness and righteousness; modesty, wealth, forbearance, gentleness, and patience—all these were found in the incomparable king Śibi, possessed by his compassionate understanding. Because he was thus disposed and set aside modesty for this reason, therefore Śibi departed by chariot. (01-88-19)

(Now Aṣṭaka indeed again asked; not his grandfather, with curiosity, like Indra. I ask you, O king, tell the truth; from where and of whom are you, and of whom the son? What has been done by you, indeed, not by him is the doer in the world, other than you a Kṣatriya or Brāhmaṇa? (01-88-20))
Then Aṣṭaka again, with curiosity, addressed the one like Indra—not his grandfather—and said: "I ask you, O king, tell me the truth; from where are you, of whom are you, and whose son are you? What you have done—there is no Kṣatriya or Brāhmaṇa in the world, other than you, who is the doer of such a deed." (01-88-20)

सर्वामिमां पृथिवीं निर्जिगाय; प्रस्थे बद्ध्वा ह्यददं ब्राह्मणेभ्यः। मेध्यानश्वानेकशफान्सुरूपां; स्तदा देवाः पुण्यभाजो भवन्ति ॥०१-८८-२२॥
sarvām imāṃ pṛthivīṃ nirjigāya; prasthe baddhvā hy adadaṃ brāhmaṇebhyaḥ। medhyān aśvān ekaśaphān surūpān; tadā devāḥ puṇya-bhājo bhavanti॥01-88-22॥

(All this earth I conquered; in a vessel having bound, indeed, I gave to the Brāhmaṇas. Pure horses, one-hoofed and beautiful; then the gods become enjoyers of merit. (01-88-22))
I conquered this entire earth; after tying it up in a vessel, I indeed gave it to the Brāhmaṇas. Pure, one-hoofed, beautiful horses—then the gods become the recipients of merit. (01-88-22)
अदामहं पृथिवीं ब्राह्मणेभ्यः; पूर्णामिमामखिलां वाहनस्य। गोभिः सुवर्णेन धनैश्च मुख्यै; स्तत्रासन्गाः शतमर्बुदानि ॥०१-८८-२३॥

(I, I gave the earth to the Brāhmaṇas; this entire earth filled with vehicles, with cows, with gold, and with chief riches; there were cows, a hundred arbudas (ten crores).)

सत्येन मे द्यौश्च वसुन्धरा च; तथैवाग्निर्ज्वलते मानुषेषु। न मे वृथा व्याहृतमेव वाक्यं; सत्यं हि सन्तः प्रतिपूजयन्ति ॥ सर्वे च देवा मुनयश्च लोकाः; सत्येन पूज्या इति मे मनोगतम् ॥०१-८८-२४॥

(By truth for me heaven and the earth and just so fire burns among humans. Not for me vain spoken only word; truth indeed good people honor in return. All and gods sages and worlds by truth worthy of worship, thus in my mind.)
Through truth, for me both heaven and earth, as well as fire, exist among humans. My words are never spoken in vain; indeed, the good honor truth. All gods, sages, and worlds are worthy of worship through truth—such is my conviction. (01-88-24)
यो नः स्वर्गजितः सर्वान्यथावृत्तं निवेदयेत्। अनसूयुर्द्विजाग्रेभ्यः स लभेन्नः सलोकताम् ॥०१-८८-२५॥
yo naḥ svargajitaḥ sarvānyathāvṛttaṃ nivedayet। anasūyurdvijāgrebhyaḥ sa labhennaḥ salokatām॥01-88-25॥
[यो (yaḥ) - who; नः (naḥ) - for us; स्वर्गजितः (svargajitaḥ) - winner of heaven; सर्वान्यथावृत्तं (sarvānyathāvṛttam) - all actual occurrences; निवेदयेत् (nivedayet) - should communicate; अनसूयुः (anasūyuḥ) - without envy; द्विजाग्रेभ्यः (dvijāgrebhyaḥ) - to the foremost among twice-born; स (sa) - he; लभेत् (labhet) - should obtain; नः (naḥ) - for us; सलोकताम् (salokatām) - same world/existence together;]
(Who for us, the winner of heaven, should communicate all actual occurrences; without envy, to the foremost among twice-born, he should obtain for us the same world/existence together.)
Whoever, without envy, communicates to the foremost among the twice-born all the actual events for us, who has won heaven, may he obtain for us existence in the same world. (01-88-25)

evaṃ rājā sa mahātmā hy atīva; svair dauhitraīs tārito ’mitra-sāhaḥ. tyaktvā mahīṃ paramodāra-karmā; svargaṃ gataḥ karmabhir vyāpya pṛthvīm ॥01-88-26॥
[एवम् (evaṃ) - thus; राजा (rājā) - king; स (sa) - he; महात्मा (mahātmā) - great-souled; हि (hi) - indeed; अतीव (atīva) - exceedingly; स्वैः (svaiḥ) - by his own; दौहित्रैः (dauhitraiḥ) - grandsons; तारितः (tāritaḥ) - rescued; अमित्रसाहः (amitra-sāhaḥ) - one who could conquer enemies; त्यक्त्वा (tyaktvā) - leaving; महीम् (mahīm) - the earth; परम-उदार-कर्मा (parama-udāra-karmā) - of supremely noble deeds; स्वर्गम् (svargam) - heaven; गतः (gataḥ) - attained; कर्मभिः (karmabhiḥ) - by deeds; व्याप्य (vyāpya) - having pervaded; पृथ्वीम् (pṛthvīm) - the earth;]
(Thus the king, he, great-souled indeed exceedingly, by his own grandsons rescued, conqueror of enemies. Having left the earth, of supremely noble deeds, heaven attained, by deeds, having pervaded the earth.)
Thus that king, the great-souled one, indeed exceedingly, having been rescued by his own grandsons and victorious over his enemies, having left the earth, through supremely noble deeds, attained heaven, having pervaded the earth with his actions. (01-88-26)
