bhagavānuvāca॥
[भगवान् (bhagavān) - Bhagavan; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
Bhagavan said:
सञ्जयस्य श्रुतं वाक्यं भवतश्च श्रुतं मया। सर्वं जानाम्यभिप्रायं तेषां च भवतश्च यः ॥५-७१-१॥
sañjayasya śrutaṁ vākyaṁ bhavataśca śrutaṁ mayā। sarvaṁ jānāmyabhiprāyaṁ tēṣāṁ ca bhavataśca yaḥ ॥5-71-1॥
[सञ्जयस्य (sañjayasya) - of Sañjaya; श्रुतं (śrutaṁ) - was heard; वाक्यं (vākyaṁ) - the speech; भवतः (bhavataḥ) - of you; च (ca) - and; श्रुतं (śrutaṁ) - was heard; मया (mayā) - by me; सर्वं (sarvaṁ) - all; जानामि (jānāmi) - I know; अभिप्रायं (abhiprāyaṁ) - the intention; तेषां (tēṣāṁ) - of them; च (ca) - and; भवतः (bhavataḥ) - of you; च (ca) - and; यः (yaḥ) - what;]
I have heard Sañjaya’s speech and yours as well; I know entirely the intention of both them and you. (5-71-1)
तव धर्माश्रिता बुद्धिस्तेषां वैराश्रिता मतिः। यदयुद्धेन लभ्येत तत्ते बहुमतं भवेत् ॥५-७१-२॥
tava dharmāśritā buddhistēṣāṁ vairāśritā matiḥ। yadayuddhēna labhyēta tattē bahumataṁ bhavēt ॥5-71-2॥
[तव (tava) - your; धर्माश्रिता (dharmāśritā) - based on righteousness; बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - thinking; तेषां (tēṣāṁ) - their; वैराश्रिता (vairāśritā) - based on enmity; मतिः (matiḥ) - thinking; यद (yada) - if; अयुद्धेन (ayuddhēna) - without battle; लभ्येत (labhyēta) - could be obtained; तत् (tat) - that; ते (tē) - to you; बहुमतं (bahumataṁ) - highly regarded; भवेत् (bhavēt) - would be;]
Your thinking is based on righteousness; theirs is based on enmity. If it were possible to obtain it without battle, you would greatly prefer that. (5-71-2)
न च तन्नैष्ठिकं कर्म क्षत्रियस्य विशां पते। आहुराश्रमिणः सर्वे यद्भैक्षं क्षत्रियश्चरेत् ॥५-७१-३॥
na ca tannaiṣṭhikaṁ karma kṣatriyasya viśāṁ patē। āhurāśramiṇaḥ sarvē yadbhaikṣaṁ kṣatriyaścarēt ॥5-71-3॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; तत् (tat) - that; नैष्ठिकं (naiṣṭhikaṁ) - consistent with one's essential duty; कर्म (karma) - action; क्षत्रियस्य (kṣatriyasya) - for a kshatriya; विशां पते (viśāṁ patē) - O lord of the people; आहुः (āhuḥ) - they say; आश्रमिणः (āśramiṇaḥ) - those living according to ashrama (life stages); सर्वे (sarvē) - all; यत् (yat) - that which; भैक्षं (bhaikṣaṁ) - begging (for alms); क्षत्रियः (kṣatriyaḥ) - a kshatriya; चरेत् (carēt) - should practice;]
Nor, O lord of the people, do all the teachers of the ashramas say that the act of begging for alms is consistent with the essential duty of a kshatriya. (5-71-3)
जयो वधो वा सङ्ग्रामे धात्रा दिष्टः सनातनः। स्वधर्मः क्षत्रियस्यैष कार्पण्यं न प्रशस्यते ॥५-७१-४॥
jayō vadhō vā saṅgrāmē dhātrā diṣṭaḥ sanātanaḥ। svadharmaḥ kṣatriyasyaiṣa kārpaṇyaṁ na praśasyatē ॥5-71-4॥
[जयः (jayaḥ) - victory; वधः (vadhaḥ) - death; वा (vā) - or; सङ्ग्रामे (saṅgrāmē) - in battle; धात्रा (dhātrā) - by the Creator; दिष्टः (diṣṭaḥ) - ordained; सनातनः (sanātanaḥ) - eternal; स्वधर्मः (svadharmaḥ) - one's own duty; क्षत्रियस्य (kṣatriyasya) - of a Kshatriya; एषः (ēṣaḥ) - this; कार्पण्यं (kārpaṇyaṁ) - weakness; न (na) - not; प्रशस्यते (praśasyatē) - is praised;]
Victory or death in battle is the eternal decree of the Creator; this is the duty of a Kshatriya, and weakness is not to be commended. (5-71-4)
न हि कार्पण्यमास्थाय शक्या वृत्तिर्युधिष्ठिर। विक्रमस्व महाबाहो जहि शत्रूनरिंदम ॥५-७१-५॥
na hi kārpaṇyamāsthāya śakyā vr̥ttiryudhiṣṭhira। vikramasva mahābāhō jahi śatrūnariṁdama ॥5-71-5॥
[न हि (na hi) - for indeed not; कार्पण्यम् (kārpaṇyam) - weakness; आस्थाय (āsthāya) - embracing; शक्या (śakyā) - can; वृत्तिः (vr̥ttiḥ) - conduct; युधिष्ठिर (yudhiṣṭhira) - Yudhiṣṭhira; विक्रमस्व (vikramasva) - show your valor; महाबाहो (mahābāhō) - mighty-armed; जहि (jahi) - defeat; शत्रून् (śatrūn) - your enemies; अरिंदम (ariṁdama) - subduer of foes;]
Yudhiṣṭhira, one cannot conduct oneself by embracing weakness; show your valor, mighty-armed one, defeat your enemies, subduer of foes. (5-71-5)
अतिगृद्धाः कृतस्नेहा दीर्घकालं सहोषिताः। कृतमित्राः कृतबला धार्तराष्ट्राः परन्तप ॥५-७१-६॥
atigr̥ddhāḥ kr̥tasnēhā dīrghakālaṁ sahōṣitāḥ। kr̥tamitrāḥ kr̥tabalā dhārtarāṣṭrāḥ parantapa ॥5-71-6॥
[अतिगृद्धाः (atigr̥ddhāḥ) - excessively greedy; कृतस्नेहा (kr̥tasnēhā) - having made alliances; दीर्घकालं (dīrghakālaṁ) - for a long time; सहोषिताः (sahōṣitāḥ) - have lived together; कृतमित्राः (kr̥tamitrāḥ) - having made friends; कृतबला (kr̥tabalā) - having secured strength; धार्तराष्ट्राः (dhārtarāṣṭrāḥ) - the sons of Dhritarashtra; परन्तप (parantapa) - scorcher of foes;]
The sons of Dhritarashtra, scorcher of foes—excessively greedy, having formed alliances, having lived together for a long time, having made friends, having secured strength— (5-71-6)
न पर्यायोऽस्ति यत्साम्यं त्वयि कुर्युर्विशां पते। बलवत्तां हि मन्यन्ते भीष्मद्रोणकृपादिभिः ॥५-७१-७॥
na paryāyō’sti yatsāmyaṁ tvayi kuryurviśāṁ patē। balavattāṁ hi manyantē bhīṣmadrōṇakr̥pādibhiḥ ॥5-71-7॥
[न (na) - not; पर्यायः (paryāyaḥ) - opportunity; अस्ति (asti) - exists; यत् (yat) - that; साम्यम् (sāmyam) - equality; त्वयि (tvayi) - with you; कुर्युः (kuryuḥ) - they would make; विशाम् (viśām) - of men; पते (patē) - lord; बलवत्ताम् (balavattām) - greater strength; हि (hi) - indeed; मन्यन्ते (manyantē) - they consider; भीष्म-द्रोण-कृप-आदिभिः (bhīṣma-drōṇa-kr̥pa-ādibhiḥ) - with Bhishma, Drona, Kripa, and others;]
There is no chance that they would seek equality with you, lord of men, for they think themselves stronger, with Bhishma, Drona, Kripa, and the others on their side. (5-71-7)
यावच्च मार्दवेनैतान्राजन्नुपचरिष्यसि। तावदेते हरिष्यन्ति तव राज्यमरिंदम ॥५-७१-८॥
yāvacca mārdavēnaitānrājannupacariṣyasi। tāvadētē hariṣyanti tava rājyamariṁdama ॥5-71-8॥
[यावत् (yāvat) - as long as; च (ca) - and; मार्दवेन (mārdavēna) - with gentleness; एतान् (ētān) - these people; राजन् (rājan) - O king; उपचरिष्यसि (upacariṣyasi) - you treat; तावद् (tāvad) - so long; एते (ētē) - these people; हरिष्यन्ति (hariṣyanti) - will take away; तव (tava) - your; राज्यम् (rājyam) - kingdom; अरिंदम (ariṁdama) - O subduer of enemies;]
O king, as long as you treat these people with gentleness, they will keep seizing your kingdom, O subduer of enemies. (5-71-8)
नानुक्रोशान्न कार्पण्यान्न च धर्मार्थकारणात्। अलं कर्तुं धार्तराष्ट्रास्तव काममरिंदम ॥५-७१-९॥
nānukrōśānna kārpaṇyānna ca dharmārthakāraṇāt। alaṁ kartuṁ dhārtarāṣṭrāstava kāmamariṁdama ॥5-71-9॥
[न अनुक्रोशात् (na anukrōśāt) - not out of compassion; न कार्पण्यात् (na kārpaṇyāt) - not out of weakness; न च धर्म-अर्थ-कारणात् (na ca dharma-artha-kāraṇāt) - nor out of any reason of righteousness or gain; अलम् कर्तुं (alam kartuṁ) - to do enough; धार्तराष्ट्राः (dhārtarāṣṭrāḥ) - the sons of Dhritarashtra; तव कामम् (tava kāmam) - your wish; अरिंदम (ariṁdama) - O subduer of enemies;]
O subduer of enemies, the sons of Dhritarashtra are not willing to do your wish—neither out of compassion, nor out of weakness, nor for any reason of righteousness or gain. (5-71-9)
एतदेव निमित्तं ते पाण्डवास्तु यथा त्वयि। नान्वतप्यन्त कौपीनं तावत्कृत्वापि दुष्करम् ॥५-७१-१०॥
ētadēva nimittaṁ tē pāṇḍavāstu yathā tvayi। nānvatapyanta kaupīnaṁ tāvatkr̥tvāpi duṣkaram ॥5-71-10॥
[एतदेव (ētadēva) - for this very reason; निमित्तं (nimittaṁ) - cause; ते (tē) - for you; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; तु (tu) - but; यथा (yathā) - as; त्वयि (tvayi) - toward you; न (na) - not; अन्वतप्यन्त (anvatapyanta) - regret; कौपीनं (kaupīnaṁ) - a loincloth; तावत् (tāvat) - just; कृत्वा अपि (kr̥tvā api) - even after taking up; दुष्करम् (duṣkaram) - difficult;]
But it was for this very reason concerning you that the Pāṇḍavas felt no regret, even though they had to live wearing only a loincloth, which is so hard to endure. (5-71-10)
पितामहस्य द्रोणस्य विदुरस्य च धीमतः। पश्यतां कुरुमुख्यानां सर्वेषामेव तत्त्वतः ॥५-७१-११॥
pitāmahasya drōṇasya vidurasya ca dhīmataḥ। paśyatāṁ kurumukhyānāṁ sarvēṣāmēva tattvataḥ ॥5-71-11॥
[पितामहस्य (pitāmahasya) - of Bhīṣma; द्रोणस्य (drōṇasya) - of Droṇa; विदुरस्य (vidurasya) - of Vidura; च (ca) - and; धीमतः (dhīmataḥ) - wise; पश्यताम् (paśyatām) - while watching; कुरु-मुख्यानाम् (kuru-mukhyānām) - by the foremost of the Kurus; सर्वेषाम् (sarvēṣām) - all; एव (ēva) - indeed; तत्त्वतः (tattvataḥ) - truly;]
—while Bhīṣma, Droṇa, Vidura, and all the intelligent leaders of the Kurus were truly looking on— (5-71-11)
दानशीलं मृदुं दान्तं धर्मकाममनुव्रतम्। यत्त्वामुपधिना राजन्द्यूतेनावञ्चयत्तदा । न चापत्रपते पापो नृशंसस्तेन कर्मणा ॥५-७१-१२॥
dānaśīlaṁ mr̥duṁ dāntaṁ dharmakāmamanuvratam। yattvāmupadhinā rājandyūtēnāvañcayattadā । na cāpatrapatē pāpō nr̥śaṁsastēna karmaṇā ॥5-71-12॥
[दानशीलं (dānaśīlaṁ) - generous; मृदुं (mr̥duṁ) - gentle; दान्तं (dāntaṁ) - self-controlled; धर्मकामम् (dharmakāmam) - desiring righteousness; अनुव्रतम् (anuvratam) - devoted; यत् (yat) - who; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; उपधिना (upadhinā) - by deceit; राजन् (rājan) - O King; द्यूतेन (dyūtēna) - in the game of dice; अवञ्चयत् (avañcayat) - cheated; तदा (tadā) - then; न (na) - did not; च (ca) - and; अपत्रपते (apatrapatē) - feel shame; पापः (pāpaḥ) - the wicked one; नृशंसः (nr̥śaṁsaḥ) - cruel; तेन (tēna) - for that; कर्मणा (karmaṇā) - deed;]
O King, when that cruel and wicked man cheated you—who are generous, gentle, self-controlled, devoted, and intent on righteousness—by deception at dice, he did not even feel ashamed for that deed. (5-71-12)
तथाशीलसमाचारे राजन्मा प्रणयं कृथाः। वध्यास्ते सर्वलोकस्य किं पुनस्तव भारत ॥५-७१-१३॥
tathāśīlasamācārē rājanmā praṇayaṁ kr̥thāḥ। vadhyāstē sarvalōkasya kiṁ punastava bhārata ॥5-71-13॥
[तथा (tathā) - likewise; शील-समाचारे (śīla-samācārē) - in nature and conduct; राजन् (rājan) - O king; मा (mā) - do not; प्रणयम् (praṇayam) - affection; कृथाः (kr̥thāḥ) - place; वध्याः (vadhyāḥ) - deserving of punishment; ते (tē) - he; सर्वलोकस्य (sarvalōkasya) - of all people; किं पुनः (kiṁ punaḥ) - how much more so; तव (tava) - to you; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
Therefore, O king, do not show affection toward someone of such character and conduct; he deserves punishment from everyone—how much more so from you, O Bhārata. (5-71-13)
वाग्भिस्त्वप्रतिरूपाभिरतुदत्सकनीयसम्। श्लाघमानः प्रहृष्टः सन्भाषते भ्रातृभिः सह ॥५-७१-१४॥
vāgbhistvapratirūpābhiratudatsakanīyasam। ślāghamānaḥ prahr̥ṣṭaḥ sanbhāṣatē bhrātr̥bhiḥ saha ॥5-71-14॥
[वाग्भिः (vāgbhiḥ) - with words; तु अप्रतिरूपाभिः (tu apratirūpābhiḥ) - yet unfitting; अतुदत् (atudat) - wounded; सकनीयसम् (sakanīyasam) - one worthy of protection; श्लाघमानः (ślāghamānaḥ) - boasting; प्रहृष्टः सन् (prahr̥ṣṭaḥ san) - being delighted; भाषते (bhāṣatē) - speaks; भ्रातृभिः सह (bhrātr̥bhiḥ saha) - together with his brothers;]
He, boasting and delighted, together with his brothers, wounds one worthy of protection with unfitting words and speaks. (5-71-14)
एतावत्पाण्डवानां हि नास्ति किञ्चिदिह स्वकम्। नामधेयं च गोत्रं च तदप्येषां न शिष्यते ॥५-७१-१५॥
ētāvatpāṇḍavānāṁ hi nāsti kiñcidiha svakam। nāmadhēyaṁ ca gōtraṁ ca tadapyēṣāṁ na śiṣyatē ॥5-71-15॥
[एतावत् (ētāvat) - so much as this; पाण्डवानाम् (pāṇḍavānām) - of the Pāṇḍavas; हि (hi) - indeed; नास्ति (nāsti) - there is not; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - even anything; इह (iha) - here; स्वकम् (svakam) - their own; नामधेयम् (nāmadhēyam) - name; च (ca) - and; गोत्रम् (gōtram) - lineage; च (ca) - and; तत् अपि (tat api) - even that; एषाम् (ēṣām) - of them; न (na) - not; शिष्यते (śiṣyatē) - remains;]
The Pāṇḍavas have nothing at all of their own here—not even a name or lineage; even that, for them, does not remain. (5-71-15)
कालेन महता चैषां भविष्यति पराभवः। प्रकृतिं ते भजिष्यन्ति नष्टप्रकृतयो जनाः ॥५-७१-१६॥
kālēna mahatā caiṣāṁ bhaviṣyati parābhavaḥ। prakr̥tiṁ tē bhajiṣyanti naṣṭaprakr̥tayō janāḥ ॥5-71-16॥
[कालेन महता (kālēna mahatā) - in a long time; च (ca) - and; एषां (ēṣāṁ) - of these; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - there will be; पराभवः (parābhavaḥ) - ruin; प्रकृतिं (prakr̥tiṁ) - to their original nature; ते (tē) - they; भजिष्यन्ति (bhajiṣyanti) - will return; नष्टप्रकृतयः (naṣṭaprakr̥tayaḥ) - those whose true natures are lost; जनाः (janāḥ) - people;]
And in time, these people will meet with ruin; those whose true natures are lost will return to their original state. (5-71-16)
एताश्चान्याश्च परुषा वाचः स समुदीरयन्। श्लाघते ज्ञातिमध्ये स्म त्वयि प्रव्रजिते वनम् ॥५-७१-१७॥
ētāścānyāśca paruṣā vācaḥ sa samudīrayan। ślāghatē jñātimadhyē sma tvayi pravrajitē vanam ॥5-71-17॥
[एताः च (ētāḥ ca) - these; अन्याः च (anyāḥ ca) - and other; परुषा वाचः (paruṣā vācaḥ) - harsh words; सः (saḥ) - he; समुदीरयन् (samudīrayan) - uttering repeatedly; श्लाघते (ślāghatē) - boasts; ज्ञाति मध्ये (jñāti madhyē) - among his kinsmen; स्म (sma) - used to; त्वयि (tvayi) - when you; प्रव्रजिते (pravrajitē) - had departed; वनम् (vanam) - to the forest;]
Uttering these and other harsh words, he used to boast among his kinsmen when you had departed to the forest. (5-71-17)
ये तत्रासन्समानीतास्ते दृष्ट्वा त्वामनागसम्। अश्रुकण्ठा रुदन्तश्च सभायामासते तदा ॥५-७१-१८॥
yē tatrāsansamānītāstē dr̥ṣṭvā tvāmanāgasam। aśrukaṇṭhā rudantaśca sabhāyāmāsatē tadā ॥5-71-18॥
[ये (yē) - those who; तत्र (tatra) - there; आसन् (āsan) - were present; समानीताः (samānītāḥ) - gathered; ते (tē) - they; दृष्ट्वा (dr̥ṣṭvā) - seeing; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; अनागसम् (anāgasam) - innocent; अश्रुकण्ठाः (aśrukaṇṭhāḥ) - with throats choked by tears; रुदन्तः (rudantaḥ) - weeping; च (ca) - and; सभायाम् (sabhāyām) - in the assembly; आसते (āsatē) - sat; तदा (tadā) - then;]
Those gathered there, seeing you innocent, sat in the assembly at that time weeping, their throats choked with tears. (5-71-18)
न चैनमभ्यनन्दंस्ते राजानो ब्राह्मणैः सह। सर्वे दुर्योधनं तत्र निन्दन्ति स्म सभासदः ॥५-७१-१९॥
na cainamabhyanandaṁstē rājānō brāhmaṇaiḥ saha। sarvē duryōdhanaṁ tatra nindanti sma sabhāsadaḥ ॥5-71-19॥
[न च (na ca) - and not; एनम् (ēnam) - him; अभ्यनन्दन् (abhyanandan) - welcomed; ते (tē) - they; राजानः (rājānaḥ) - the kings; ब्राह्मणैः सह (brāhmaṇaiḥ saha) - together with the Brahmins; सर्वे (sarvē) - all; दुर्योधनम् (duryōdhanam) - Duryodhana; तत्र (tatra) - there; निन्दन्ति स्म (nindanti sma) - were criticizing; सभासदः (sabhāsadaḥ) - the council members;]
And the kings, together with the Brahmins, did not welcome him; there, all the members of the council were criticizing Duryodhana. (5-71-19)
कुलीनस्य च या निन्दा वधश्चामित्रकर्शन। महागुणो वधो राजन्न तु निन्दा कुजीविका ॥५-७१-२०॥
kulīnasya ca yā nindā vadhaścāmitrakarśana। mahāguṇō vadhō rājanna tu nindā kujīvikā ॥5-71-20॥
[कुलीनस्य (kulīnasya) - of a noble person; च (ca) - and; या (yā) - what; निन्दा (nindā) - reproach; वधः (vadhaḥ) - death; च (ca) - and; अमित्रकर्शन (amitrakarśana) - destroyer of enemies; महागुणः (mahāguṇaḥ) - a great merit; वधः (vadhaḥ) - death; राजन् (rājan) - O King; न (na) - not; तु (tu) - but; निन्दा (nindā) - reproach; कुजीविका (kujīvikā) - is a wrongful life;]
O King, for a noble person, reproach and death—death in the destruction of enemies is a great merit, but reproach is a disgraceful existence. (5-71-20)
तदैव निहतो राजन्यदैव निरपत्रपः। निन्दितश्च महाराज पृथिव्यां सर्वराजसु ॥५-७१-२१॥
tadaiva nihatō rājanyadaiva nirapatrapaḥ। ninditaśca mahārāja pr̥thivyāṁ sarvarājasu ॥5-71-21॥
[तदा एव (tadā ēva) - right then; निहतः (nihataḥ) - slain; राजन् (rājan) - O King; यदा एव (yadā ēva) - as soon as; निरपत्रपः (nirapatrapaḥ) - shameless; निन्दितः (ninditaḥ) - disgraced; च (ca) - and; महाराज (mahārāja) - great king; पृथिव्यां (pr̥thivyāṁ) - on earth; सर्वराजसु (sarvarājasu) - among all kings;]
O King, just as soon as a shameless man is slain, he is disgraced among all the kings on earth, great king. (5-71-21)
ईषत्कार्यो वधस्तस्य यस्य चारित्रमीदृशम्। प्रस्कम्भनप्रतिस्तब्धश्छिन्नमूल इव द्रुमः ॥५-७१-२२॥
īṣatkāryō vadhastasya yasya cāritramīdr̥śam। praskambhanapratistabdhaśchinnamūla iva drumaḥ ॥5-71-22॥
[ईषत्-कार्यः (īṣat-kāryaḥ) - should be treated with slight action; वधः (vadhaḥ) - punishment; तस्य (tasya) - for him; यस्य (yasya) - whose; चारित्रम् (cāritram) - conduct; ईदृशम् (īdr̥śam) - is such; प्रस्कम्भन-प्रतिस्तब्धः (praskambhana-pratistabdhaḥ) - propped up only by force; छिन्नमूलः इव द्रुमः (chinnamūlaḥ iva drumaḥ) - like a tree whose roots are cut;]
For one whose conduct is such, only minimal punishment is required—a man propped up merely by force, like a tree whose roots have been cut. (5-71-22)
वध्यः सर्प इवानार्यः सर्वलोकस्य दुर्मतिः। जह्येनं त्वममित्रघ्न मा राजन्विचिकित्सिथाः ॥५-७१-२३॥
vadhyaḥ sarpa ivānāryaḥ sarvalōkasya durmatiḥ। jahyēnaṁ tvamamitraghna mā rājanvicikitsithāḥ ॥5-71-23॥
[वध्यः (vadhyaḥ) - deserving to be killed; सर्पः (sarpaḥ) - a snake; इव (iva) - like; अनार्यः (anāryaḥ) - an ignoble person; सर्वलोकस्य (sarvalōkasya) - to all people; दुर्मतिः (durmatiḥ) - one of evil disposition; जहि (jahi) - kill; एनम् (ēnam) - him; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अमित्रघ्न (amitraghna) - destroyer of enemies; मा (mā) - do not; राजन् (rājan) - O king; विचिकित्सिथाः (vicikitsithāḥ) - hesitate;]
Just as a snake is to be killed, an ignoble person, wicked to all people, deserves death; so, O king, destroyer of enemies, kill him—do not hesitate. (5-71-23)
सर्वथा त्वत्क्षमं चैतद्रोचते च ममानघ। यत्त्वं पितरि भीष्मे च प्रणिपातं समाचरेः ॥५-७१-२४॥
sarvathā tvatkṣamaṁ caitadrōcatē ca mamānagha। yattvaṁ pitari bhīṣmē ca praṇipātaṁ samācarēḥ ॥5-71-24॥
[सर्वथा (sarvathā) - in every way; त्वत्-क्षमं (tvat-kṣamaṁ) - befitting for you; च (ca) - and; एतत् (ētat) - this; रोचते (rōcatē) - is pleasing; च (ca) - and; मम (mama) - to me; अनघ (anagha) - blameless one; यत् (yat) - that; त्वम् (tvam) - you; पितरि (pitari) - to your father; भीष्मे (bhīṣmē) - to Bhishma; च (ca) - and; प्रणिपातं (praṇipātaṁ) - showing respect; समाचरेः (samācarēḥ) - you perform;]
In every way, this is fitting for you and is also pleasing to me, blameless one—that you show respect to your father and to Bhishma. (5-71-24)
अहं तु सर्वलोकस्य गत्वा छेत्स्यामि संशयम्। येषामस्ति द्विधाभावो राजन्दुर्योधनं प्रति ॥५-७१-२५॥
ahaṁ tu sarvalōkasya gatvā chētsyāmi saṁśayam। yēṣāmasti dvidhābhāvō rājanduryōdhanaṁ prati ॥5-71-25॥
[अहं (ahaṁ) - I; तु (tu) - but; सर्वलोकस्य (sarvalōkasya) - of everyone; गत्वा (gatvā) - going; छेत्स्यामि (chētsyāmi) - will dispel; संशयम् (saṁśayam) - doubt; येषाम् (yēṣām) - of those; अस्ति (asti) - there is; द्विधाभावः (dvidhābhāvaḥ) - a state of doubt; राजन् (rājan) - O king; दुर्योधनं प्रति (duryōdhanaṁ prati) - regarding Duryodhana;]
But I will go and dispel the doubts of all those, O king, who have any uncertainty regarding Duryodhana. (5-71-25)
मध्ये राज्ञामहं तत्र प्रातिपौरुषिकान्गुणान्। तव सङ्कीर्तयिष्यामि ये च तस्य व्यतिक्रमाः ॥५-७१-२६॥
madhyē rājñāmahaṁ tatra prātipauruṣikānguṇān। tava saṅkīrtayiṣyāmi yē ca tasya vyatikramāḥ ॥5-71-26॥
[मध्ये (madhyē) - in the midst; राज्ञाम् (rājñām) - of the kings; अहं (ahaṁ) - I; तत्र (tatra) - there; प्रातिपौरुषिकान् (prātipauruṣikān) - regarding merits and actions; गुणान् (guṇān) - virtues; तव (tava) - your; सङ्कीर्तयिष्यामि (saṅkīrtayiṣyāmi) - will recount; ये च (yē ca) - and which; तस्य (tasya) - his; व्यतिक्रमाः (vyatikramāḥ) - transgressions;]
There, in the midst of the kings, I will recount your virtues relating to merit and strength, and also his transgressions. (5-71-26)
ब्रुवतस्तत्र मे वाक्यं धर्मार्थसहितं हितम्। निशम्य पार्थिवाः सर्वे नानाजनपदेश्वराः ॥५-७१-२७॥
bruvatastatra mē vākyaṁ dharmārthasahitaṁ hitam। niśamya pārthivāḥ sarvē nānājanapadēśvarāḥ ॥5-71-27॥
[ब्रुवतः (bruvataḥ) - as I spoke; तत्र (tatra) - there; मे (mē) - my; वाक्यं (vākyaṁ) - words; धर्मार्थसहितं (dharmārthasahitaṁ) - joined with righteousness and advantage; हितम् (hitam) - beneficial; निशम्य (niśamya) - hearing; पार्थिवाः (pārthivāḥ) - the kings; सर्वे (sarvē) - all; नानाजनपदेश्वराः (nānājanapadēśvarāḥ) - rulers of various countries;]
When I spoke beneficial words there, joined with righteousness and advantage, all the kings—the rulers of many countries—hearing them... (5-71-27)
त्वयि सम्प्रतिपत्स्यन्ते धर्मात्मा सत्यवागिति। तस्मिंश्चाधिगमिष्यन्ति यथा लोभादवर्तत ॥५-७१-२८॥
tvayi sampratipatsyantē dharmātmā satyavāgiti। tasmiṁścādhigamiṣyanti yathā lōbhādavartata ॥5-71-28॥
[त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; सम्प्रतिपत्स्यन्ते (sampratipatsyantē) - will repose trust; धर्मात्मा (dharmātmā) - a righteous person; सत्यवाक् (satyavāk) - one who speaks truth; इति (iti) - thus; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in him; च (ca) - and; अधिगमिष्यन्ति (adhigamiṣyanti) - will behave; यथा (yathā) - just as; लोभात् (lōbhāt) - out of greed; अवर्तत (avartata) - he acted;]
People will trust in you, thinking you are a righteous man who speaks the truth; and toward him, they will act just as he behaved out of greed. (5-71-28)
गर्हयिष्यामि चैवैनं पौरजानपदेष्वपि। वृद्धबालानुपादाय चातुर्वर्ण्यसमागमे ॥५-७१-२९॥
garhayiṣyāmi caivainaṁ paurajānapadēṣvapi। vr̥ddhabālānupādāya cāturvarṇyasamāgamē ॥5-71-29॥
[गर्हयिष्यामि च (garhayiṣyāmi ca) - and I will censure; एव (ēva) - indeed; एनम् (ēnam) - him; पौरजानपदेषु अपि (paurajānapadēṣu api) - even among city and country people; वृद्ध बालान् अनुपादाय (vr̥ddha bālān anupādāya) - taking both elders and children into account; चातुर्वर्ण्य समागमे (cāturvarṇya samāgamē) - in the assembly of the four classes;]
And I will indeed censure him—even among city-dwellers and country people, taking both elders and children into account, in the presence of the assembly of the four classes. (5-71-29)
शमं चेद्याचमानस्त्वं न धर्मं तत्र लप्स्यसे। कुरून्विगर्हयिष्यन्ति धृतराष्ट्रं च पार्थिवाः ॥५-७१-३०॥
śamaṁ cēdyācamānastvaṁ na dharmaṁ tatra lapsyasē। kurūnvigarhayiṣyanti dhr̥tarāṣṭraṁ ca pārthivāḥ ॥5-71-30॥
[शमं चेत् याचमानः त्वं (śamaṁ cēt yācamānaḥ tvaṁ) - if you, seeking peace; न धर्मं तत्र लप्स्यसे (na dharmaṁ tatra lapsyasē) - will not obtain righteousness in that; कुरून् विगर्हयिष्यन्ति (kurūn vigarhayiṣyanti) - the Kurus will reproach; धृतराष्ट्रं च पार्थिवाः (dhr̥tarāṣṭraṁ ca pārthivāḥ) - and the kings will also reproach Dhritarashtra;]
If you seek peace in this way, you will not gain righteousness thereby. The Kurus will be blamed, and the kings will also reproach Dhritarashtra. (5-71-30)
तस्मिँल्लोकपरित्यक्ते किं कार्यमवशिष्यते। हते दुर्योधने राजन्यदन्यत्क्रियतामिति ॥५-७१-३१॥
tasmim̐llōkaparityaktē kiṁ kāryamavaśiṣyatē। hatē duryōdhanē rājanyadanyatkriyatāmiti ॥5-71-31॥
[तस्मिन् (tasmin) - when that; लोकपरित्यक्ते (lōkaparityaktē) - (is) abandoned by the world; किं (kiṁ) - what; कार्यं (kāryaṁ) - can be accomplished; अवशिष्यते (avaśiṣyatē) - remains; हतॆ (hate) - when slain; दुर्योधने (duryōdhanē) - Duryodhana; राजन् (rājan) - O King; यत् (yat) - whatever; अन्यत् (anyat) - else; क्रियताम् (kriyatām) - let that be done; इति (iti) - thus;]
When he has been abandoned by the world, what else remains to be done? If Duryodhana is slain, O King, then let whatever else needs to be done be done. (5-71-31)
यात्वा चाहं कुरून्सर्वान्युष्मदर्थमहापयन्। यतिष्ये प्रशमं कर्तुं लक्षयिष्ये च चेष्टितम् ॥५-७१-३२॥
yātvā cāhaṁ kurūnsarvānyuṣmadarthamahāpayan। yatiṣyē praśamaṁ kartuṁ lakṣayiṣyē ca cēṣṭitam ॥5-71-32॥
[यात्वा (yātvā) - having gone; च (ca) - and; अहम् (aham) - I; कुरून् सर्वान् (kurūn sarvān) - to all the Kurus; यूष्मदर्थम् (yūṣmadartham) - for your sake; अहापयन् (ahāpayan) - surrendering; यतिष्ये (yatiṣyē) - I will strive; प्रशमं कर्तुम् (praśamaṁ kartum) - to bring about peace; लक्षयिष्ये (lakṣayiṣyē) - I will observe; च (ca) - and; चेष्टितम् (cēṣṭitam) - their actions;]
Having gone to all the Kurus and surrendered myself for your sake, I will strive to establish peace and observe their actions. (5-71-32)
कौरवाणां प्रवृत्तिं च गत्वा युद्धाधिकारिकाम्। निशाम्य विनिवर्तिष्ये जयाय तव भारत ॥५-७१-३३॥
kauravāṇāṁ pravr̥ttiṁ ca gatvā yuddhādhikārikām। niśāmya vinivartiṣyē jayāya tava bhārata ॥5-71-33॥
[कौरवाणां प्रवृत्तिं (kauravāṇāṁ pravr̥ttiṁ) - the intentions of the Kauravas; च (ca) - and; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; युद्ध-अधिकारिकाम् (yuddha-adhikārikām) - regarding their stance on war; निशाम्य (niśāmya) - having ascertained; विनिवर्तिष्ये (vinivartiṣyē) - I will return; जयाय (jayāya) - for your victory; तव (tava) - your; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
I will go and ascertain the intentions of the Kauravas regarding the war, and then I will return for your victory, O Bhārata. (5-71-33)
सर्वथा युद्धमेवाहमाशंसामि परैः सह। निमित्तानि हि सर्वाणि तथा प्रादुर्भवन्ति मे ॥५-७१-३४॥
sarvathā yuddhamēvāhamāśaṁsāmi paraiḥ saha। nimittāni hi sarvāṇi tathā prādurbhavanti mē ॥5-71-34॥
[सर्वथा (sarvathā) - certainly; युद्धम् (yuddham) - war; एव (ēva) - alone; अहम् (aham) - I; आशंसामि (āśaṁsāmi) - anticipate; परैः (paraiḥ) - with the adversaries; सह (saha) - together; निमित्तानि (nimittāni) - omens; हि (hi) - indeed; सर्वाणि (sarvāṇi) - all; तथा (tathā) - in that way; प्रादुर्भवन्ति (prādurbhavanti) - appear; मे (mē) - to me;]
I am certain that there will be war with the adversaries, for all the omens are appearing to me in this way. (5-71-34)
मृगाः शकुन्ताश्च वदन्ति घोरं; हस्त्यश्वमुख्येषु निशामुखेषु। घोराणि रूपाणि तथैव चाग्नि; र्वर्णान्बहून्पुष्यति घोररूपान् । नुष्यलोकक्षपणोऽथ घोरो; नो चेदनुप्राप्त इहान्तकः स्यात् ॥५-७१-३५॥
mr̥gāḥ śakuntāśca vadanti ghōraṁ; hastyaśvamukhyēṣu niśāmukhēṣu। ghōrāṇi rūpāṇi tathaiva cāgni; rvarṇānbahūnpuṣyati ghōrarūpān । nuṣyalōkakṣapaṇō’tha ghōrō; nō cēdanuprāpta ihāntakaḥ syāt ॥5-71-35॥
[मृगाः (mr̥gāḥ) - wild animals; शकुन्ताः च (śakuntāḥ ca) - and birds; वदन्ति (vadanti) - are uttering; घोरं (ghōraṁ) - fearful; हस्त्यश्वमुख्येषु (hastyaśvamukhyēṣu) - among elephants and horses; निशामुखेषु (niśāmukhēṣu) - at the start of the night; घोराणि (ghōrāṇi) - terrible; रूपाणि (rūpāṇi) - forms; तथैव च (tathaiva ca) - and likewise; अग्निः (agniḥ) - fire; वर्णान् बहून् (varṇān bahūn) - many colors; पुष्यति (puṣyati) - displays; घोररूपान् (ghōrarūpān) - frightening appearances; नुष्यलोकक्षपणः अथ (nuṣyalōkakṣapaṇaḥ atha) - and now the destroyer of people; घोरः (ghōraḥ) - terrible; न चेत् अनुप्राप्तः इह (na cēt anuprāptaḥ iha) - if the end has not yet come here; अन्तकः स्यात् (antakaḥ syāt) - let it be the end;]
Wild animals and birds are making terrifying cries; among elephants and horses at nightfall, there are dreadful forms appearing. Likewise, the fire displays many frightening colors. And now, if destruction has not yet arrived for people here, then let it be the end. (5-71-35)
शस्त्राणि पत्रं कवचान्रथांश्च; नागान्ध्वजांश्च प्रतिपादयित्वा। योधाश्च सर्वे कृतनिश्रमास्ते; भवन्तु हस्त्यश्वरथेषु यत्ताः । साङ्ग्रामिकं ते यदुपार्जनीयं; सर्वं समग्रं कुरु तन्नरेन्द्र ॥५-७१-३६॥
śastrāṇi patraṁ kavacānrathāṁśca; nāgāndhvajāṁśca pratipādayitvā। yōdhāśca sarvē kr̥taniśramāstē; bhavantu hastyaśvarathēṣu yattāḥ । sāṅgrāmikaṁ tē yadupārjanīyaṁ; sarvaṁ samagraṁ kuru tannarēndra ॥5-71-36॥
[शस्त्राणि (śastrāṇi) - weapons; पत्रं (patraṁ) - armor; कवचान् (kavacān) - breastplates; रथांश्च (rathāṁśca) - and chariots; नागान् (nāgān) - elephants; ध्वजान् (dhvajān) - standards; च (ca) - and; प्रतिपादयित्वा (pratipādayitvā) - having delivered; योधाः (yōdhāḥ) - the warriors; च (ca) - and; सर्वे (sarvē) - all; कृतनिश्रमाः (kr̥taniśramāḥ) - having completed their exertions; ते (tē) - they; भवन्तु (bhavantu) - should be; हस्त्यश्वरथेषु (hastyaśvarathēṣu) - in (their) elephants, horses, and chariots; यत्ताः (yattāḥ) - prepared; साङ्ग्रामिकं (sāṅgrāmikaṁ) - fit for battle; ते (tē) - for you; यदुपार्जनीयं (yadupārjanīyaṁ) - whatever is to be acquired; सर्वं (sarvaṁ) - all; समग्रं (samagraṁ) - in its entirety; कुरु (kuru) - cause to be (gathered); तत् (tat) - that; नरेन्द्र (narēndra) - O king;]
Have the weapons, armor, breastplates, chariots, elephants, and standards all delivered, and let all the warriors who have finished their exertions be prepared on the elephants, horses, and chariots. Whatever fit-for-battle resources are to be gathered for you—O king—gather them all together in their entirety. (5-71-36)
दुर्योधनो न ह्यलमद्य दातुं; जीवंस्तवैतन्नृपते कथञ्चित्। यत्ते पुरस्तादभवत्समृद्धं; द्यूते हृतं पाण्डवमुख्य राज्यम् ॥५-७१-३७॥
duryōdhanō na hyalamadya dātuṁ; jīvaṁstavaitannr̥patē kathañcit। yattē purastādabhavatsamr̥ddhaṁ; dyūtē hr̥taṁ pāṇḍavamukhya rājyam ॥5-71-37॥
[दुर्योधनः (duryōdhanaḥ) - Duryodhana; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - truly; अलम् (alam) - able; अद्य (adya) - today; दातुम् (dātum) - to give; जीवन् (jīvan) - while living; तव (tava) - to you; एतत् (ētat) - this; नृपते (nr̥patē) - king; कथञ्चित् (kathañcit) - in any manner; यत् (yat) - that which; ते (tē) - to you; पुरस्तात् (purastāt) - formerly; अभवत् (abhavat) - was; समृद्धम् (samr̥ddham) - prosperous; द्यूते (dyūtē) - in the dice game; हृतम् (hr̥tam) - lost; पाण्डवमुख्य (pāṇḍavamukhya) - to the foremost of the Pāṇḍavas; राज्यम् (rājyam) - kingdom;]
Duryodhana truly is not able to give this to you now, O king, by any means while he still lives—the prosperous kingdom that once was yours, which was lost to the foremost of the Pāṇḍavas in the dice game. (5-71-37)
