[भीमसेन (bhīmasēna) - Bhīmasena; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
Bhīmasena said:
यथा यथैव शान्तिः स्यात्कुरूणां मधुसूदन। तथा तथैव भाषेथा मा स्म युद्धेन भीषयेः ॥५-७२-१॥
yathā yathaiva śāntiḥ syātkurūṇāṁ madhusūdana। tathā tathaiva bhāṣēthā mā sma yuddhēna bhīṣayēḥ ॥5-72-1॥
[यथा यथैव (yathā yathaiva) - in whatever manner; शान्तिः (śāntiḥ) - peace; स्यात् (syāt) - may occur; कुरूणां (kurūṇāṁ) - for the Kurus; मधुसूदन (madhusūdana) - Madhusudana; तथा तथैव (tathā tathaiva) - just so; भाषेथा (bhāṣēthā) - you should speak; मा स्म (mā sma) - do not; युद्धेन (yuddhēna) - with talk of war; भीषयेः (bhīṣayēḥ) - frighten;]
Madhusudana, in whatever way peace may be achieved for the Kurus, you should speak accordingly—do not frighten them with talk of war. (5-72-1)
अमर्षी नित्यसंरब्धः श्रेयोद्वेषी महामनाः। नोग्रं दुर्योधनो वाच्यः साम्नैवैनं समाचरेः ॥५-७२-२॥
amarṣī nityasaṁrabdhaḥ śrēyōdvēṣī mahāmanāḥ। nōgraṁ duryōdhanō vācyaḥ sāmnaivainaṁ samācarēḥ ॥5-72-2॥
[अमर्षी (amarṣī) - irascible; नित्यसंरब्धः (nityasaṁrabdhaḥ) - constantly irate; श्रेयः-द्वेषी (śrēyaḥ-dvēṣī) - hostile to what is good; महा-मनाः (mahā-manāḥ) - of great mind; न (na) - not; उग्रम् (ugram) - harshly; दुर्योधनः (duryōdhanaḥ) - Duryodhana; वाच्यः (vācyaḥ) - should be addressed; साम्ना एव (sāmnā ēva) - only with gentle words; एनम् (ēnam) - him; समाचरेः (samācarēḥ) - you should deal;]
He is irascible, constantly angry, hostile to what is good, and of great mind; Duryodhana should not be addressed harshly—deal with him only gently. (5-72-2)
प्रकृत्या पापसत्त्वश्च तुल्यचेताश्च दस्युभिः। ऐश्वर्यमदमत्तश्च कृतवैरश्च पाण्डवैः ॥५-७२-३॥
prakr̥tyā pāpasattvaśca tulyacētāśca dasyubhiḥ। aiśvaryamadamattaśca kr̥tavairaśca pāṇḍavaiḥ ॥5-72-3॥
[प्रकृत्या (prakr̥tyā) - by nature; पापसत्त्वः (pāpasattvaḥ) - wicked in disposition; च (ca) - and; तुल्यचेताः (tulyacētāḥ) - of like mind; च (ca) - and; दस्युभिः (dasyubhiḥ) - with bandits; ऐश्वर्यमदमत्तः (aiśvaryamadamattaḥ) - intoxicated with the pride of power; च (ca) - and; कृतवैरः (kr̥tavairaḥ) - at enmity; च (ca) - and; पाण्डवैः (pāṇḍavaiḥ) - with the Pāṇḍavas;]
By nature, he is wicked, of like mind with bandits, intoxicated with the pride of power, and is hostile toward the Pāṇḍavas. (5-72-3)
अदीर्घदर्शी निष्ठूरी क्षेप्ता क्रूरपराक्रमः। दीर्घमन्युरनेयश्च पापात्मा निकृतिप्रियः ॥५-७२-४॥
adīrghadarśī niṣṭhūrī kṣēptā krūraparākramaḥ। dīrghamanyuranēyaśca pāpātmā nikr̥tipriyaḥ ॥5-72-4॥
[अदीर्घदर्शी (adīrghadarśī) - short-sighted; निष्ठूरी (niṣṭhūrī) - hard-hearted; क्षेप्ता (kṣēptā) - insulting; क्रूरपराक्रमः (krūraparākramaḥ) - fierce in his cruelty; दीर्घमन्युः (dīrghamanyuḥ) - holding a long-lasting grudge; अनेयः (anēyaḥ) - unrestrainable; च (ca) - and; पापात्मा (pāpātmā) - wicked-souled; निकृतिप्रियः (nikr̥tipriyaḥ) - fond of deceit;]
Short-sighted, hard-hearted, insulting, fierce in his cruelty, bearing long-lasting anger, unrestrainable, wicked in soul, and fond of deceit. (5-72-4)
म्रियेतापि न भज्येत नैव जह्यात्स्वकं मतम्। तादृशेन शमं कृष्ण मन्ये परमदुष्करम् ॥५-७२-५॥
mriyētāpi na bhajyēta naiva jahyātsvakaṁ matam। tādr̥śēna śamaṁ kr̥ṣṇa manyē paramaduṣkaram ॥5-72-5॥
[म्रियेत (mriyēta) - even if he were to die; अपि (api) - even; न (na) - not; भज्येत (bhajyēta) - would he be broken; न (na) - nor; एव (ēva) - ever; जह्यात् (jahyāt) - would he abandon; स्वकं (svakaṁ) - his own; मतम् (matam) - opinion; तादृशेन (tādr̥śēna) - with such a one; शमं (śamaṁ) - peace; कृष्ण (kr̥ṣṇa) - Kṛṣṇa; मन्ये (manyē) - I think; परमदुष्करम् (paramaduṣkaram) - extremely difficult;]
Even if he were to die, he would not yield, nor would he ever abandon his own opinion; with such a person, Kṛṣṇa, I think peace is extremely difficult. (5-72-5)
सुहृदामप्यवाचीनस्त्यक्तधर्मः प्रियानृतः। प्रतिहन्त्येव सुहृदां वाचश्चैव मनांसि च ॥५-७२-६॥
suhr̥dāmapyavācīnastyaktadharmaḥ priyānr̥taḥ। pratihantyēva suhr̥dāṁ vācaścaiva manāṁsi ca ॥5-72-6॥
[सुहृदाम् अपि अवाचीन् (suhr̥dām api avācīn) - even against friends, speaking harshly; त्यक्तधर्मः (tyaktadharmaḥ) - having abandoned righteousness; प्रिय-अनृतः (priya-anr̥taḥ) - speaking pleasant falsehoods; प्रतिहन्त्य् एव (pratihanty ēva) - indeed harms; सुहृदां (suhr̥dāṁ) - of friends; वाचः च एव (vācaḥ ca ēva) - both the words; मनांसि च (manāṁsi ca) - and the minds;]
One who, even toward friends, speaks harshly, abandons righteousness, and tells agreeable lies—such a person indeed harms both the words and the minds of friends. (5-72-6)
स मन्युवशमापन्नः स्वभावं दुष्टमास्थितः। स्वभावात्पापमन्वेति तृणैस्तुन्न इवोरगः ॥५-७२-७॥
sa manyuvaśamāpannaḥ svabhāvaṁ duṣṭamāsthitaḥ। svabhāvātpāpamanvēti tr̥ṇaistunna ivōragaḥ ॥5-72-7॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; मन्यु-वशम् (manyu-vaśam) - under the sway of anger; आपन्नः (āpannaḥ) - fallen; स्वभावम् (svabhāvam) - his own nature; दुष्टम् (duṣṭam) - wicked; आस्थितः (āsthitaḥ) - embracing; स्वभावात् (svabhāvāt) - because of his nature; पापम् (pāpam) - sin; अन्वेति (anvēti) - he attains; तृणैः तुन्नः इव (tr̥ṇaiḥ tunnaḥ iva) - like a mat woven of grass; उरगः (uragaḥ) - a serpent;]
He, fallen under the sway of anger and embracing a wicked nature, because of his own nature attains sin, like a serpent hidden in a mat of grass. (5-72-7)
दुर्योधनो हि यत्सेनः सर्वथा विदितस्तव। यच्छीलो यत्स्वभावश्च यद्बलो यत्पराक्रमः ॥५-७२-८॥
duryōdhanō hi yatsēnaḥ sarvathā viditastava। yacchīlō yatsvabhāvaśca yadbalō yatparākramaḥ ॥5-72-8॥
[दुर्योधनः (duryōdhanaḥ) - Duryodhana; हि (hi) - indeed; यत्सेनः (yatsēnaḥ) - with such an army; सर्वथा (sarvathā) - entirely; विदितः (viditaḥ) - is known; तव (tava) - to you; यच्छीलः (yacchīlaḥ) - what sort of character he has; यत्स्वभावः (yatsvabhāvaḥ) - what sort of nature he has; च (ca) - and; यद्बलः (yadbalaḥ) - what strength he has; यत्पराक्रमः (yatparākramaḥ) - what valor he possesses;]
For Duryodhana—what army he has, what character, what nature, what strength, what valor—these are all well known to you. (5-72-8)
पुरा प्रसन्नाः कुरवः सहपुत्रास्तथा वयम्। इन्द्रज्येष्ठा इवाभूम मोदमानाः सबान्धवाः ॥५-७२-९॥
purā prasannāḥ kuravaḥ sahaputrāstathā vayam। indrajyēṣṭhā ivābhūma mōdamānāḥ sabāndhavāḥ ॥5-72-9॥
[पुरा (purā) - formerly; प्रसन्नाः (prasannāḥ) - content; कुरवः (kuravaḥ) - the Kuru elders; सहपुत्राः (sahaputrāḥ) - along with their sons; तथा वयम् (tathā vayam) - and likewise we; इन्द्रज्येष्ठाः इव (indrajyēṣṭhāḥ iva) - like the sons of Indra; अभूम (abhūma) - we were; मोदमानाः (mōdamānāḥ) - rejoicing; सबंधवाः (sabaṁdhavāḥ) - with all our kin;]
Once, the Kuru elders, together with their sons and we ourselves, were content—rejoicing with all our kin, like the sons of Indra. (5-72-9)
दुर्योधनस्य क्रोधेन भारता मधुसूदन। धक्ष्यन्ते शिशिरापाये वनानीव हुताशनैः ॥५-७२-१०॥
duryōdhanasya krōdhēna bhāratā madhusūdana। dhakṣyantē śiśirāpāyē vanānīva hutāśanaiḥ ॥5-72-10॥
[दुर्योधनस्य (duryōdhanasya) - of Duryodhana; क्रोधेन (krōdhēna) - by the anger; भारता (bhāratā) - O Bhārata; मधुसूदन (madhusūdana) - O Madhusudana; धक्ष्यन्ते (dhakṣyantē) - will be consumed; शिशिरापाये (śiśirāpāyē) - when the winter ends; वनानि (vanāni) - the forests; इव (iva) - like; हुताशनैः (hutāśanaiḥ) - by fires;]
O Madhusudana, O Bhārata, just as forests are consumed by fire at the end of winter, so too will people be consumed by Duryodhana's anger. (5-72-10)
अष्टादशेमे राजानः प्रख्याता मधुसूदन। ये समुच्चिच्छिदुर्ज्ञातीन्सुहृदश्च सबान्धवान् ॥५-७२-११॥
aṣṭādaśēmē rājānaḥ prakhyātā madhusūdana। yē samuccicchidurjñātīnsuhr̥daśca sabāndhavān ॥5-72-11॥
[अष्टादश (aṣṭādaśa) - eighteen; इमे (imē) - these; राजानः (rājānaḥ) - kings; प्रख्याता (prakhyātā) - are renowned; मधुसूदन (madhusūdana) - Madhusudana; ये (yē) - who; समुच्चिच्छिदुः (samuccicchiduḥ) - completely destroyed; ज्ञातीन् (jñātīn) - their kin; सुःहृतः (suḥhr̥taḥ) - friends; च (ca) - and; स बान्धवान् (sa bāndhavān) - and relatives;]
O Madhusudana, these eighteen renowned kings—who utterly destroyed their own kin, friends, and relatives— (5-72-11)
असुराणां समृद्धानां ज्वलतामिव तेजसा। पर्यायकाले धर्मस्य प्राप्ते बलिरजायत ॥५-७२-१२॥
asurāṇāṁ samr̥ddhānāṁ jvalatāmiva tējasā। paryāyakālē dharmasya prāptē balirajāyata ॥5-72-12॥
[असुराणां (asurāṇāṁ) - of the Asuras; समृद्धानां (samr̥ddhānāṁ) - prosperous; ज्वलताम् (jvalatām) - blazing; इव (iva) - like; तेजसा (tējasā) - in splendor; पर्यायकाले (paryāyakālē) - at the appropriate time; धर्मस्य (dharmasya) - of dharma; प्राप्ते (prāptē) - having arrived; बलि: (bali:) - Bali; अजायत (ajāyata) - arose;]
At the appropriate time, when dharma prevailed, Bali arose among the Asuras, prosperous and blazing in splendor. (5-72-12)
हैहयानामुदावर्तो नीपानां जनमेजयः। बहुलस्तालजङ्घानां कृमीणामुद्धतो वसुः ॥५-७२-१३॥
haihayānāmudāvartō nīpānāṁ janamējayaḥ। bahulastālajaṅghānāṁ kr̥mīṇāmuddhatō vasuḥ ॥5-72-13॥
[हैहयानाम् (haihayānām) - of the Haihayas; उदावर्तः (udāvartaḥ) - Udāvarta; नीपानाम् (nīpānām) - of the Nipas; जनमेजयः (janamējayaḥ) - Janamejaya; बहुलः (bahulaḥ) - Bahula; तालजङ्घानाम् (tālajaṅghānām) - of the Tālajaṅghas; कृमीणाम् (kr̥mīṇām) - of the Krimis; उद्धतः (uddhataḥ) - the arrogant; वसुः (vasuḥ) - Vasu;]
Udāvarta among the Haihayas, Janamejaya among the Nipas, Bahula among the Tālajaṅghas, and Vasu the arrogant among the Krimis. (5-72-13)
अजबिन्दुः सुवीराणां सुराष्ट्राणां कुशर्द्धिकः। अर्कजश्च बलीहानां चीनानां धौतमूलकः ॥५-७२-१४॥
ajabinduḥ suvīrāṇāṁ surāṣṭrāṇāṁ kuśarddhikaḥ। arkajaśca balīhānāṁ cīnānāṁ dhautamūlakaḥ ॥5-72-14॥
[अजबिन्दुः (ajabinduḥ) - Ajabindu; सुवीराणां (suvīrāṇāṁ) - of the Suviras; सुराष्ट्राणां (surāṣṭrāṇāṁ) - of the Surashtras; कुशर्द्धिकः (kuśarddhikaḥ) - Kusharddhika; अर्कजः (arkajaḥ) - Arkaja; बलीहानां (balīhānāṁ) - of the Balihas; चीनानां (cīnānāṁ) - of the Chinas; धौतमूलकः (dhautamūlakaḥ) - Dhautamulaka;]
Ajabindu was king of the Suviras, Kusharddhika of the Surashtras, Arkaja of the Balihas, and Dhautamulaka of the Chinas. (5-72-14)
हयग्रीवो विदेहानां वरप्रश्च महौजसाम्। बाहुः सुन्दरवेगानां दीप्ताक्षाणां पुरूरवाः ॥५-७२-१५॥
hayagrīvō vidēhānāṁ varapraśca mahaujasām। bāhuḥ sundaravēgānāṁ dīptākṣāṇāṁ purūravāḥ ॥5-72-15॥
[हयग्रीवः (hayagrīvaḥ) - Hayagrīva; विदेहानाम् (vidēhānām) - of the Videhas; वरः (varaḥ) - Vara; प्रश्च (praśca) - and also; महौजसाम् (mahaujasām) - of the greatly powerful; बाहुः (bāhuḥ) - Bāhu; सुन्दरवेगानाम् (sundaravēgānām) - of the swift and beautiful; दीप्ताक्षाणाम् (dīptākṣāṇām) - of the bright-eyed; पुरूरवाः (purūravāḥ) - Purūravas;]
Hayagrīva was the ruler of the Videhas, Vara of the greatly powerful, Bāhu of the swift and beautiful, and Purūravas of the bright-eyed. (5-72-15)
सहजश्चेदिमत्स्यानां प्रचेतानां बृहद्बलः। धारणश्चेन्द्रवत्सानां मुकुटानां विगाहनः ॥५-७२-१६॥
sahajaścēdimatsyānāṁ pracētānāṁ br̥hadbalaḥ। dhāraṇaścēndravatsānāṁ mukuṭānāṁ vigāhanaḥ ॥5-72-16॥
[सहजः (sahajaḥ) - Sahaja; च (ca) - and; एदिमत्स्यानाम् (ēdimatsyānām) - of the Edimatsyas; प्रचेतानाम् (pracētānām) - of the Prachetas; बृहद्बलः (br̥hadbalaḥ) - Brihadbala; धारणः (dhāraṇaḥ) - Dharana; च (ca) - and; इन्द्रवत्सानाम् (indravatsānām) - of the Indravatsas; मुकुटानाम् (mukuṭānām) - of the Mukutas; विगाहनः (vigāhanaḥ) - Vigahana;]
Sahaja of the Edimatsyas, Brihadbala of the Prachetas, Dharana of the Indravatsas, and Vigahana of the Mukutas. (5-72-16)
शमश्च नन्दिवेगानामित्येते कुलपांसनाः। युगान्ते कृष्ण सम्भूताः कुलेषु पुरुषाधमाः ॥५-७२-१७॥
śamaśca nandivēgānāmityētē kulapāṁsanāḥ। yugāntē kr̥ṣṇa sambhūtāḥ kulēṣu puruṣādhamāḥ ॥5-72-17॥
[शमः (śamaḥ) - Śama; च (ca) - and; नन्दिवेगानाम् (nandivēgānām) - among the Nandivegas; इति (iti) - thus; एते (ētē) - these; कुलपांसनाः (kulapāṁsanāḥ) - shames of their families; युगान्ते (yugāntē) - at the end of the age; कृष्ण (kr̥ṣṇa) - Kṛṣṇa; सम्भूताः (sambhūtāḥ) - born; कुलेषु (kulēṣu) - into families; पुरुषाधमाः (puruṣādhamāḥ) - the worst of men;]
Śama among the Nandivegas—thus these are shames of their families, the worst of men born into families at the end of the age, O Kṛṣṇa. (5-72-17)
अप्ययं नः कुरूणां स्याद्युगान्ते कालसम्भृतः। दुर्योधनः कुलाङ्गारो जघन्यः पापपूरुषः ॥५-७२-१८॥
apyayaṁ naḥ kurūṇāṁ syādyugāntē kālasambhr̥taḥ। duryōdhanaḥ kulāṅgārō jaghanyaḥ pāpapūruṣaḥ ॥5-72-18॥
[अपि (api) - perhaps; अयम् (ayam) - this; नः (naḥ) - of us; कुरूणाम् (kurūṇām) - of the Kurus; स्यात् (syāt) - might be; युग-अन्ते (yuga-antē) - at the end of the age; काल-सम्भृतः (kāla-sambhr̥taḥ) - brought forth by Time; दुर्योधनः (duryōdhanaḥ) - Duryodhana; कुल-अङ्गारः (kula-aṅgāraḥ) - the disgrace of the family; जघन्यः (jaghanyaḥ) - the basest; पाप-पुरुषः (pāpa-puruṣaḥ) - wicked man;]
Could it be that this Duryodhana, the disgrace of our Kuru line, the basest and most wicked man, has been produced by Time at the end of the age? (5-72-18)
तस्मान्मृदु शनैरेनं ब्रूया धर्मार्थसंहितम्। कामानुबन्धबहुलं नोग्रमुग्रपराक्रमम् ॥५-७२-१९॥
tasmānmr̥du śanairēnaṁ brūyā dharmārthasaṁhitam। kāmānubandhabahulaṁ nōgramugraparākramam ॥5-72-19॥
[तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; मृदु (mr̥du) - gently; शनैः (śanaiḥ) - slowly; एनम् (ēnam) - to him; ब्रूयात् (brūyāt) - let one speak; धर्मार्थसंहितम् (dharmārthasaṁhitam) - in accordance with righteousness and benefit; कामानुबन्धबहुलम् (kāmānubandhabahulam) - full of motives connected to desire; न (na) - not; उग्रम् (ugram) - harsh; उग्रपराक्रमम् (ugraparākramam) - with fierce aggression;]
Therefore, let someone address him gently and slowly, in a manner consistent with righteousness and benefit, filled with considerations of desire—not harshly or with fierce aggression. (5-72-19)
अपि दुर्योधनं कृष्ण सर्वे वयमधश्चराः। नीचैर्भूत्वानुयास्यामो मा स्म नो भरता नशन् ॥५-७२-२०॥
api duryōdhanaṁ kr̥ṣṇa sarvē vayamadhaścarāḥ। nīcairbhūtvānuyāsyāmō mā sma nō bharatā naśan ॥5-72-20॥
[अपि (api) - even; दुर्योधनम् (duryōdhanam) - Duryodhana; कृष्ण (kr̥ṣṇa) - Kṛṣṇa; सर्वे (sarvē) - all of us; वयम् (vayam) - we; अधःचराः (adhaḥcarāḥ) - subordinate; नीचैः (nīcaiḥ) - lowly; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - becoming; अनुयास्यामः (anuyāsyāmaḥ) - will follow; मा स्म (mā sma) - let not; नः (naḥ) - us; भरतः (bharataḥ) - descendants of Bharata; नशन् (naśan) - be destroyed;]
O Kṛṣṇa, even if we must all become lowly and follow Duryodhana, let the Bharatas not be destroyed on our account. (5-72-20)
अप्युदासीनवृत्तिः स्याद्यथा नः कुरुभिः सह। वासुदेव तथा कार्यं न कुरूननयः स्पृशेत् ॥५-७२-२१॥
apyudāsīnavr̥ttiḥ syādyathā naḥ kurubhiḥ saha। vāsudēva tathā kāryaṁ na kurūnanayaḥ spr̥śēt ॥5-72-21॥
[अपि (api) - perhaps; उदासीनवृत्तिः (udāsīnavr̥ttiḥ) - a neutral course; स्यात् (syāt) - might be; यथा (yathā) - so that; नः (naḥ) - for us; कुरुभिः सह (kurubhiḥ saha) - with the Kuru clan; वासुदेव (vāsudēva) - Vāsudeva; तथा (tathā) - so; कार्यं (kāryaṁ) - should be done; न (na) - not; कुरून् (kurūn) - the Kurus; अनयः (anayaḥ) - ruin; स्पृशेत् (spr̥śēt) - may touch;]
Perhaps a neutral approach might be possible for us with the Kurus; O Vāsudeva, this should be done in such a way that ruin does not befall the Kurus. (5-72-21)
वाच्यः पितामहो वृद्धो ये च कृष्ण सभासदः। भ्रातॄणामस्तु सौभ्रात्रं धार्तराष्ट्रः प्रशाम्यताम् ॥५-७२-२२॥
vācyaḥ pitāmahō vr̥ddhō yē ca kr̥ṣṇa sabhāsadaḥ। bhrātr̥̄ṇāmastu saubhrātraṁ dhārtarāṣṭraḥ praśāmyatām ॥5-72-22॥
[वाच्यः (vācyaḥ) - should be addressed; पितामहः (pitāmahaḥ) - the elder grandsire; वृद्धः (vr̥ddhaḥ) - aged; ये च (yē ca) - and those; कृष्ण (kr̥ṣṇa) - by Kṛṣṇa; सभासदः (sabhāsadaḥ) - councilors; भ्रातॄणाम् (bhrātr̥̄ṇām) - among the brothers; अस्तु (astu) - let there be; सौभ्रात्रम् (saubhrātram) - brotherly friendship; धार्तराष्ट्रः (dhārtarāṣṭraḥ) - Duryodhana; प्रशाम्यताम् (praśāmyatām) - should be pacified;]
The aged grandsire should be addressed, as should those in Kṛṣṇa's assembly; let there be brotherly friendship among the brothers, and let Duryodhana be pacified. (5-72-22)
अहमेतद्ब्रवीम्येवं राजा चैव प्रशंसति। अर्जुनो नैव युद्धार्थी भूयसी हि दयार्जुने ॥५-७२-२३॥
ahamētadbravīmyēvaṁ rājā caiva praśaṁsati। arjunō naiva yuddhārthī bhūyasī hi dayārjunē ॥5-72-23॥

I say this, and the king also approves: Arjuna is not at all eager to fight, for there is indeed great compassion in Arjuna. (5-72-23)
