[कण्व (kaṇva) - Kanva; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
Kanva said:
मातलिस्तु व्रजन्मार्गे नारदेन महर्षिणा। वरुणं गच्छता द्रष्टुं समागच्छद्यदृच्छया ॥५-९६-१॥
mātalistu vrajanmārgē nāradēna maharṣiṇā। varuṇaṁ gacchatā draṣṭuṁ samāgacchadyadr̥cchayā ॥5-96-1॥
[मातलिः (mātaliḥ) - Mātali; तु (tu) - but; व्रजन् मार्गे (vrajan mārgē) - on the way as he was going; नारदेन (nāradēna) - by Nārada; महार्षिणा (mahārṣiṇā) - the great sage; वरुणं गच्छता (varuṇaṁ gacchatā) - as he was going to see Varuṇa; द्रष्टुम् (draṣṭum) - to see; समागच्छत् (samāgacchat) - met; यदृच्छया (yadr̥cchayā) - by chance;]
But as Mātali was traveling on the road to see Varuṇa, he happened by chance to meet the great sage Nārada. (5-96-1)
नारदोऽथाब्रवीदेनं क्व भवान्गन्तुमुद्यतः। स्वेन वा सूत कार्येण शासनाद्वा शतक्रतोः ॥५-९६-२॥
nāradō’thābravīdēnaṁ kva bhavāngantumudyataḥ। svēna vā sūta kāryēṇa śāsanādvā śatakratōḥ ॥5-96-2॥
[नारदः (nāradaḥ) - Nārada; अथ (atha) - then; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; एनम् (ēnam) - to him; क्व (kva) - where; भवान् (bhavān) - you; गन्तुम् (gantum) - to go; उद्यतः (udyataḥ) - are preparing; स्वेन (svēna) - your own; वा (vā) - or; सूत (sūta) - charioteer; कार्येण (kāryēṇa) - on business; शासनात् (śāsanāt) - on the order; वा (vā) - or; शतक्रतोः (śatakratōḥ) - of Śatakratu (Indra);]
Then Nārada said to him, "Where are you going—on your own business as a charioteer, or on an errand from Śatakratu (Indra)?" (5-96-2)
मातलिर्नारदेनैवं सम्पृष्टः पथि गच्छता। यथावत्सर्वमाचष्ट स्वकार्यं वरुणं प्रति ॥५-९६-३॥
mātalirnāradēnaivaṁ sampr̥ṣṭaḥ pathi gacchatā। yathāvatsarvamācaṣṭa svakāryaṁ varuṇaṁ prati ॥5-96-3॥
[मातलिः (mātaliḥ) - Mātali; नारदेन (nāradēna) - by Nārada; एवं (ēvaṁ) - thus; सम्पृष्टः (sampr̥ṣṭaḥ) - questioned; पथि (pathi) - on the road; गच्छता (gacchatā) - as he was going; यथावत् (yathāvat) - in full detail; सर्वम् (sarvam) - everything; आचष्ट (ācaṣṭa) - told; स्वकार्यं (svakāryaṁ) - his own business; वरुणं प्रति (varuṇaṁ prati) - concerning Varuṇa;]
When Mātali was thus questioned by Nārada as they traveled along the road, he told him everything in full detail, explaining his business with Varuṇa. (5-96-3)
तमुवाचाथ स मुनिर्गच्छावः सहिताविति। सलिलेशदिदृक्षार्थमहमप्युद्यतो दिवः ॥५-९६-४॥
tamuvācātha sa munirgacchāvaḥ sahitāviti। salilēśadidr̥kṣārthamahamapyudyatō divaḥ ॥5-96-4॥
[तम् (tam) - to him; उवाच (uvāca) - said; अथ (atha) - then; सः मुनिः (saḥ muniḥ) - that sage; गच्छावः (gacchāvaḥ) - let us go; सहितौ (sahitau) - together; इति (iti) - thus; सलिलेश-दिदृक्षा-अर्थम् (salilēśa-didr̥kṣā-artham) - for the purpose of seeing the lord of the waters; अहम् अपि (aham api) - I also; उद्यतः (udyataḥ) - am ready; दिवः (divaḥ) - from heaven;]
Then the sage said to him, "Let us go together; I too am ready to descend from heaven for the purpose of seeing the lord of the waters." (5-96-4)
अहं ते सर्वमाख्यास्ये दर्शयन्वसुधातलम्। दृष्ट्वा तत्र वरं कञ्चिद्रोचयिष्याव मातले ॥५-९६-५॥
ahaṁ tē sarvamākhyāsyē darśayanvasudhātalam। dr̥ṣṭvā tatra varaṁ kañcidrōcayiṣyāva mātalē ॥5-96-5॥
[अहम् (aham) - I; ते (tē) - to you; सर्वम् (sarvam) - everything; आख्यास्ये (ākhyāsyē) - will recount; दर्शयन् (darśayan) - showing; वसुधातलम् (vasudhātalam) - the surface of the earth; दृष्ट्वा (dr̥ṣṭvā) - after seeing; तत्र (tatra) - there; वरम् (varam) - a boon; कञ्चित् (kañcit) - some; रोचयिष्याव (rōcayiṣyāva) - let us choose; मातले (mātalē) - Matali;]
I will tell you everything, showing you the surface of the earth; after seeing it there, Matali, let us choose some boon. (5-96-5)
अवगाह्य ततो भूमिमुभौ मातलिनारदौ। ददृशाते महात्मानौ लोकपालमपां पतिम् ॥५-९६-६॥
avagāhya tatō bhūmimubhau mātalināradau। dadr̥śātē mahātmānau lōkapālamapāṁ patim ॥5-96-6॥
[अवगाह्य (avagāhya) - having entered; ततः (tataḥ) - then; भूमिम् (bhūmim) - the earth; उभौ (ubhau) - both; मातलि-नारदौ (mātali-nāradau) - Mātali and Nārada; ददृशाते (dadr̥śātē) - saw; महात्मानौ (mahātmānau) - the great-souled ones; लोकपालम् (lōkapālam) - the guardian of the world; अपां पतिम् (apāṁ patim) - the lord of waters;]
Then, after entering the earth, both Mātali and Nārada, those great-souled ones, saw the guardian of the world, the lord of waters. (5-96-6)
तत्र देवर्षिसदृशीं पूजां प्राप स नारदः। महेन्द्रसदृशीं चैव मातलिः प्रत्यपद्यत ॥५-९६-७॥
tatra dēvarṣisadr̥śīṁ pūjāṁ prāpa sa nāradaḥ। mahēndrasadr̥śīṁ caiva mātaliḥ pratyapadyata ॥5-96-7॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; देवर्षिसदृशीं (dēvarṣisadr̥śīṁ) - befitting a divine sage; पूजां (pūjāṁ) - honor; प्राप (prāpa) - received; स (sa) - he; नारदः (nāradaḥ) - Nārada; महेन्द्रसदृशीं (mahēndrasadr̥śīṁ) - like that accorded to Mahendra; च (ca) - and; एव (ēva) - also; मातलिः (mātaliḥ) - Mātali; प्रत्यपद्यत (pratyapadyata) - received;]
There, Nārada received honors suitable for a divine sage, and Mātali received ones such as are given to Mahendra. (5-96-7)
तावुभौ प्रीतमनसौ कार्यवत्तां निवेद्य ह। वरुणेनाभ्यनुज्ञातौ नागलोकं विचेरतुः ॥५-९६-८॥
tāvubhau prītamanasau kāryavattāṁ nivēdya ha। varuṇēnābhyanujñātau nāgalōkaṁ vicēratuḥ ॥5-96-8॥
[तौ उभौ (tau ubhau) - both of them; प्रीतमनसौ (prītamanasau) - with pleased minds; कार्यवाद्तां (kāryavādtāṁ) - the reason for their visit; निवेद्य (nivēdya) - having informed; वरुणेन (varuṇēna) - by Varuṇa; अभ्यनुज्ञातौ (abhyanujñātau) - having been permitted; नागलोकं (nāgalōkaṁ) - the realm of the Nāgas; विचेरतुः (vicēratuḥ) - they went about;]
Both of them, their minds pleased, having informed Varuṇa of the purpose of their visit and having been granted permission by him, wandered through the realm of the Nāgas. (5-96-8)
नारदः सर्वभूतानामन्तर्भूमिनिवासिनाम्। जानंश्चकार व्याख्यानं यन्तुः सर्वमशेषतः ॥५-९६-९॥
nāradaḥ sarvabhūtānāmantarbhūminivāsinām। jānaṁścakāra vyākhyānaṁ yantuḥ sarvamaśēṣataḥ ॥5-96-9॥
[नारदः (nāradaḥ) - Nārada; सर्वभूतानाम् (sarvabhūtānām) - of all beings; अन्तर्भूमिनिवासिनाम् (antarbhūminivāsinām) - who dwell beneath the earth; जानन् (jānan) - knowing; चकार (cakāra) - gave; व्याख्यानं (vyākhyānaṁ) - an explanation; यन्तुः (yantuḥ) - for the charioteer; सर्वम् (sarvam) - everything; अशेषतः (aśēṣataḥ) - in full;]
Nārada, knowing everything about all beings who dwell beneath the earth, gave a full explanation to the charioteer. (5-96-9)
नारद उवाच॥
nārada uvāca॥
[नारदः (nāradaḥ) - Nārada; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
Nārada said:
दृष्टस्ते वरुणस्तात पुत्रपौत्रसमावृतः। पश्योदकपतेः स्थानं सर्वतोभद्रमृद्धिमत् ॥५-९६-१०॥
dr̥ṣṭastē varuṇastāta putrapautrasamāvr̥taḥ। paśyōdakapatēḥ sthānaṁ sarvatōbhadramr̥ddhimat ॥5-96-10॥
[दृष्टः (dr̥ṣṭaḥ) - you have seen; ते (tē) - by you; वरुणः (varuṇaḥ) - Varuṇa; तात (tāta) - dear one; पुत्रपौत्रसमावृतः (putrapautrasamāvr̥taḥ) - surrounded by sons and grandsons; पश्य (paśya) - look; उदकपतेः (udakapatēḥ) - of the lord of waters; स्थानं (sthānaṁ) - the abode; सर्वतः (sarvataḥ) - on all sides; भद्रं (bhadraṁ) - auspicious; ऋद्धिमत् (r̥ddhimat) - prosperous;]
Dear one, you have seen Varuṇa surrounded by his sons and grandsons; look at the prosperous, auspicious abode of the lord of waters. (5-96-10)
एष पुत्रो महाप्राज्ञो वरुणस्येह गोपतेः। एष तं शीलवृत्तेन शौचेन च विशिष्यते ॥५-९६-११॥
ēṣa putrō mahāprājñō varuṇasyēha gōpatēḥ। ēṣa taṁ śīlavr̥ttēna śaucēna ca viśiṣyatē ॥5-96-11॥
[एष (ēṣa) - this; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; महाप्राज्ञः (mahāprājñaḥ) - very wise; वरुणस्य (varuṇasya) - of Varuṇa; इह (iha) - here; गोपतेः (gōpatēḥ) - lord of waters; एष (ēṣa) - this; तम् (tam) - him; शीलवृत्तेन (śīlavr̥ttēna) - by character and conduct; शौचेन (śaucēna) - by purity; च (ca) - and; विशिष्यते (viśiṣyatē) - excels;]
This is the very wise son of Varuṇa, the lord of waters, here. He surpasses him through character, conduct, and purity. (5-96-11)
एषोऽस्य पुत्रोऽभिमतः पुष्करः पुष्करेक्षणः। रूपवान्दर्शनीयश्च सोमपुत्र्या वृतः पतिः ॥५-९६-१२॥
ēṣō’sya putrō’bhimataḥ puṣkaraḥ puṣkarēkṣaṇaḥ। rūpavāndarśanīyaśca sōmaputryā vr̥taḥ patiḥ ॥5-96-12॥
[एषः (ēṣaḥ) - this one; अस्य (asya) - his; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; अभिमतः (abhimataḥ) - beloved; पुष्करः (puṣkaraḥ) - Puṣkara; पुष्कर-इक्षणः (puṣkara-ikṣaṇaḥ) - lotus-eyed; रूपवान् (rūpavān) - handsome; दर्शनीयः (darśanīyaḥ) - attractive; च (ca) - and; सोमपुत्र्या (sōmaputryā) - by Sōmaputri; वृतः (vr̥taḥ) - chosen; पतिः (patiḥ) - husband;]
This is his beloved son Puṣkara, lotus-eyed, handsome, and attractive, chosen by Sōmaputri as her husband. (5-96-12)
ज्योत्स्नाकालीति यामाहुर्द्वितीयां रूपतः श्रियम्। आदित्यस्यैव गोः पुत्रो ज्येष्ठः पुत्रः कृतः स्मृतः ॥५-९६-१३॥
jyōtsnākālīti yāmāhurdvitīyāṁ rūpataḥ śriyam। ādityasyaiva gōḥ putrō jyēṣṭhaḥ putraḥ kr̥taḥ smr̥taḥ ॥5-96-13॥
[ज्योत्स्ना-कालि इति याम् आहुः (jyōtsnā-kāli iti yām āhuḥ) - the one whom they call Jyotsnakali; द्वितीयां रूपतः श्रियम् (dvitīyāṁ rūpataḥ śriyam) - as the second, in form, the beauty; आदित्यस्य एव गोः पुत्रः (ādityasya ēva gōḥ putraḥ) - the son of Aditi and the Cow; ज्येष्ठः पुत्रः कृतः स्मृतः (jyēṣṭhaḥ putraḥ kr̥taḥ smr̥taḥ) - is regarded as the eldest son;]
They say that Jyotsnakali is the second, representing beauty in form; he, the son of Aditi and the Cow, is considered the eldest son. (5-96-13)
भवनं पश्य वारुण्या यदेतत्सर्वकाञ्चनम्। यां प्राप्य सुरतां प्राप्ताः सुराः सुरपतेः सखे ॥५-९६-१४॥
bhavanaṁ paśya vāruṇyā yadētatsarvakāñcanam। yāṁ prāpya suratāṁ prāptāḥ surāḥ surapatēḥ sakhē ॥5-96-14॥
[भवनं (bhavanaṁ) - the mansion; पश्य (paśya) - behold; वारुण्या (vāruṇyā) - of Varuṇī; यत् (yat) - which; एतत् (ētat) - this; सर्वकाञ्चनम् (sarvakāñcanam) - entirely made of gold; याम् (yām) - on reaching which; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having attained; सुरताम् (suratām) - beauty; प्राप्ताः (prāptāḥ) - have obtained; सुराः (surāḥ) - the gods; सुरपतेः (surapatēḥ) - O friend of the lord of the gods; सखे (sakhē) - friend;]
Behold, O friend of the lord of the gods, the mansion of Varuṇī, entirely made of gold—on reaching this, the gods attained beauty. (5-96-14)
एतानि हृतराज्यानां दैतेयानां स्म मातले। दीप्यमानानि दृश्यन्ते सर्वप्रहरणान्युत ॥५-९६-१५॥
ētāni hr̥tarājyānāṁ daitēyānāṁ sma mātalē। dīpyamānāni dr̥śyantē sarvapraharaṇānyuta ॥5-96-15॥
[एतानि (ētāni) - these; हृतराज्यानाम् (hr̥tarājyānām) - of those whose kingdoms were taken; दैतेयानाम् (daitēyānām) - of the Daityas; स्म (sma) - indeed; मातले (mātalē) - O Mātali; दीप्यमानानि (dīpyamānāni) - shining; दृश्यन्ते (dr̥śyantē) - are seen; सर्वप्रहरणानि (sarvapraharaṇāni) - all the weapons; उत (uta) - also;]
O Mātali, here can be seen all the shining weapons of the Daityas whose kingdoms were seized. (5-96-15)
अक्षयाणि किलैतानि विवर्तन्ते स्म मातले। अनुभावप्रयुक्तानि सुरैरवजितानि ह ॥५-९६-१६॥
akṣayāṇi kilaitāni vivartantē sma mātalē। anubhāvaprayuktāni surairavajitāni ha ॥5-96-16॥
[अक्षयाणि (akṣayāṇi) - indestructible; किल (kila) - indeed; एतानि (ētāni) - these; विवर्तन्ते स्म (vivartantē sma) - kept reappearing; मातले (mātalē) - Mātali; अनुभावप्रयुक्तानि (anubhāvaprayuktāni) - through magical power; सुरैः (suraiḥ) - by the gods; अवजितानि (avajitāni) - conquered; ह (ha) - indeed;]
These weapons, Mātali, were indeed indestructible and kept reappearing through magical power, but they were conquered by the gods. (5-96-16)
अत्र राक्षसजात्यश्च भूतजात्यश्च मातले। दिव्यप्रहरणाश्चासन्पूर्वदैवतनिर्मिताः ॥५-९६-१७॥
atra rākṣasajātyaśca bhūtajātyaśca mātalē। divyapraharaṇāścāsanpūrvadaivatanirmitāḥ ॥5-96-17॥
[अत्र (atra) - here; राक्षसजात्यः (rākṣasajātyaḥ) - of the demon class; च (ca) - and; भूतजात्यः (bhūtajātyaḥ) - of the spirit class; च (ca) - and; मातले (mātalē) - Mātali; दिव्यप्रहरणाः (divyapraharaṇāḥ) - divine weapons; च (ca) - and; आसन् (āsan) - were; पूर्वदैवतनिर्मिताः (pūrvadaivatanirmitāḥ) - created by the gods of old;]
Here, Mātali, there were beings of the demon kind and of the spirit kind, as well as divine weapons created by the gods of old. (5-96-17)
अग्निरेष महार्चिष्माञ्जागर्ति वरुणह्रदे। वैष्णवं चक्रमाविद्धं विधूमेन हविष्मता ॥५-९६-१८॥
agnirēṣa mahārciṣmāñjāgarti varuṇahradē। vaiṣṇavaṁ cakramāviddhaṁ vidhūmēna haviṣmatā ॥5-96-18॥
[अग्निः (agniḥ) - the fire; एषः (ēṣaḥ) - this; महार्चिष्मान् (mahārciṣmān) - of great flame; जागर्ति (jāgarti) - is blazing; वरुणह्रदे (varuṇahradē) - in the pool of Varuṇa; वैष्णवम् (vaiṣṇavam) - the Viṣṇu's; चक्रम् (cakram) - discus; आविद्धम् (āviddham) - fixed; विधूमेन (vidhūmēna) - smokeless; हविष्मता (haviṣmatā) - with offering;]
Here, this fire of great flame blazes in the pool of Varuṇa; and the Viṣṇu's discus is set here, smokeless and accompanied by an offering. (5-96-18)
एष गाण्डीमयश्चापो लोकसंहारसम्भृतः। रक्ष्यते दैवतैर्नित्यं यतस्तद्गाण्डिवं धनुः ॥५-९६-१९॥
ēṣa gāṇḍīmayaścāpō lōkasaṁhārasambhr̥taḥ। rakṣyatē daivatairnityaṁ yatastadgāṇḍivaṁ dhanuḥ ॥5-96-19॥
[एषः (ēṣaḥ) - this; गाण्डीमयः चापः (gāṇḍīmayaḥ cāpaḥ) - the bow made by Gāṇḍīva; लोक-সংहार-সম्भृतः (lōka-সংhāra-সমbhr̥taḥ) - endowed with world-destroying power; रक्ष्यते (rakṣyatē) - is protected; दैवतैः (daivataiḥ) - by the gods; नित्यं (nityaṁ) - always; यतः (yataḥ) - from which; तत् गाण्डिवं धनुः (tat gāṇḍivaṁ dhanuḥ) - that bow called Gāṇḍīva;]
This bow made by Gāṇḍīva, endowed with the power to destroy worlds, is always protected by the gods; for this reason it is called the Gāṇḍīva bow. (5-96-19)
एष कृत्ये समुत्पन्ने तत्तद्धारयते बलम्। सहस्रशतसङ्ख्येन प्राणेन सततं ध्रुवम् ॥५-९६-२०॥
ēṣa kr̥tyē samutpannē tattaddhārayatē balam। sahasraśatasaṅkhyēna prāṇēna satataṁ dhruvam ॥5-96-20॥
[एष (ēṣa) - this; कृत्ये (kr̥tyē) - when a crisis arises; समुत्पन्ने (samutpannē) - has come forth; तत्तत् (tattat) - various; धारयते (dhārayatē) - bears; बलम् (balam) - force; सहस्रशतसङ्ख्येन (sahasraśatasaṅkhyēna) - by the number of hundreds and thousands; प्राणेन (prāṇēna) - with energy; सततं (satataṁ) - constantly; ध्रुवम् (dhruvam) - steadily;]
When a crisis arises, this (bow) continually and steadfastly bears many kinds of force with energy equal to hundreds and thousands. (5-96-20)
अशास्यानपि शास्त्येष रक्षोबन्धुषु राजसु। सृष्टः प्रथमजो दण्डो ब्रह्मणा ब्रह्मवादिना ॥५-९६-२१॥
aśāsyānapi śāstyēṣa rakṣōbandhuṣu rājasu। sr̥ṣṭaḥ prathamajō daṇḍō brahmaṇā brahmavādinā ॥5-96-21॥
[अशास्यान् (aśāsyān) - those who cannot be governed; अपि (api) - even; शास्ति (śāsti) - rules; एषः (ēṣaḥ) - this; रक्षः-बन्धुषु (rakṣaḥ-bandhuṣu) - among Rākṣasas and their kin; राजसु (rājasu) - among kings; सृष्टः (sr̥ṣṭaḥ) - was created; प्रथमजः (prathamajaḥ) - the first-born; दण्डः (daṇḍaḥ) - punishment; ब्रह्मणा (brahmaṇā) - by Brahmā; ब्रह्मवादिना (brahmavādinā) - the proclaimer of cosmic law;]
This, punishment—the first-born—was created by Brahmā, the proclaimer of cosmic law; it governs even those who cannot be governed, among Rākṣasas, their kin, and kings. (5-96-21)
एतच्छत्रं नरेन्द्राणां महच्छक्रेण भाषितम्। पुत्राः सलिलराजस्य धारयन्ति महोदयम् ॥५-९६-२२॥
ētacchatraṁ narēndrāṇāṁ mahacchakrēṇa bhāṣitam। putrāḥ salilarājasya dhārayanti mahōdayam ॥5-96-22॥
[एतत् (ētat) - this; छत्रम् (chatram) - royal parasol; नरेन्द्राणाम् (narēndrāṇām) - of kings; महत् (mahat) - great; चक्रेण (cakrēṇa) - by Cakra; भाषितम् (bhāṣitam) - spoken; पुत्राः (putrāḥ) - sons; सलिलराजस्य (salilarājasya) - of the lord of the waters; धारयन्ति (dhārayanti) - bear; महोदयम् (mahōdayam) - of exalted splendour;]
This royal parasol of kings, great and of exalted splendour, was proclaimed by Cakra, and is borne by the sons of the lord of the waters. (5-96-22)
एतत्सलिलराजस्य छत्रं छत्रगृहे स्थितम्। सर्वतः सलिलं शीतं जीमूत इव वर्षति ॥५-९६-२३॥
ētatsalilarājasya chatraṁ chatragr̥hē sthitam। sarvataḥ salilaṁ śītaṁ jīmūta iva varṣati ॥5-96-23॥
[एतत् (ētat) - this; सलिलराजस्य (salilarājasya) - of the king of waters; छत्रं (chatraṁ) - parasol; छत्रगृहे (chatragr̥hē) - in the parasol-house; स्थितम् (sthitam) - is placed; सर्वतः (sarvataḥ) - on all sides; सलिलं (salilaṁ) - water; शीतं (śītaṁ) - cool; जीमूतः इव (jīmūtaḥ iva) - like a rain cloud; वर्षति (varṣati) - pours down;]
This parasol of the king of waters is placed in the parasol-house, and cool water pours down everywhere like a rain cloud. (5-96-23)
एतच्छत्रात्परिभ्रष्टं सलिलं सोमनिर्मलम्। तमसा मूर्छितं याति येन नार्छति दर्शनम् ॥५-९६-२४॥
ētacchatrātparibhraṣṭaṁ salilaṁ sōmanirmalam। tamasā mūrchitaṁ yāti yēna nārchati darśanam ॥5-96-24॥
[एतत् छत्रात् परिभ्रष्टं (ētat chatrāt paribhraṣṭaṁ) - this fallen from the parasol; सलिलं (salilaṁ) - water; सोम-निर्मलम् (sōma-nirmalam) - as pure as moonlight; तमसा (tamasā) - by darkness; मूर्छितं (mūrchitaṁ) - befouled; याति (yāti) - becomes; येन (yēna) - so that; न अर्चति दर्शनम् (na arcati darśanam) - it does not shine to the eye;]
This water, having fallen from the parasol, as pure as moonlight, is befouled by darkness, so that it no longer shines to the sight. (5-96-24)
बहून्यद्भुतरूपाणि द्रष्टव्यानीह मातले। तव कार्योपरोधस्तु तस्माद्गच्छाव माचिरम् ॥५-९६-२५॥
bahūnyadbhutarūpāṇi draṣṭavyānīha mātalē। tava kāryōparōdhastu tasmādgacchāva māciram ॥5-96-25॥
[बहूनि (bahūni) - many; अद्भुतरूपाणि (adbhutarūpāṇi) - wondrous forms; द्रष्टव्यानि (draṣṭavyāni) - are to be seen; इह (iha) - here; मातले (mātalē) - Matali; तव (tava) - your; कार्योपरोधः (kāryōparōdhaḥ) - business is being obstructed; तु (tu) - but; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; गच्छाव (gacchāva) - let us go; माचिरम् (māciram) - without delay;]
Matali, there are many wondrous forms to see here, but your business is being delayed; so let us go without delay. (5-96-25)
