वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

[वैशम्पायन (vaiśampāyana) - Vaiśampāyana; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
Vaiśampāyana said:
जामदग्न्यवचः श्रुत्वा कण्वोऽपि भगवानृषिः। दुर्योधनमिदं वाक्यमब्रवीत्कुरुसंसदि ॥५-९५-१॥
jāmadagnyavacaḥ śrutvā kaṇvō’pi bhagavānr̥ṣiḥ। duryōdhanamidaṁ vākyamabravītkurusaṁsadi ॥5-95-1॥
[जामदग्न्यवचः (jāmadagnyavacaḥ) - the words of Jāmadagnya; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; कण्वः (kaṇvaḥ) - Kaṇva; अपि (api) - also; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the venerable; ऋषिः (r̥ṣiḥ) - sage; दुर्योधनम् (duryōdhanam) - to Duryodhana; इदं (idaṁ) - these; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - words; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke; कुरुसंसदि (kurusaṁsadi) - in the Kuru assembly;]
After hearing the words of Jāmadagnya, the venerable sage Kaṇva also spoke these words to Duryodhana in the Kuru assembly. (5-95-1)
अक्षयश्चाव्ययश्चैव ब्रह्मा लोकपितामहः। तथैव भगवन्तौ तौ नरनारायणावृषी ॥५-९५-२॥
akṣayaścāvyayaścaiva brahmā lōkapitāmahaḥ। tathaiva bhagavantau tau naranārāyaṇāvr̥ṣī ॥5-95-2॥
[अक्षयः (akṣayaḥ) - imperishable; च (ca) - and; अव्ययः (avyayaḥ) - eternal; च (ca) - and; एव (ēva) - indeed; ब्रह्मा (brahmā) - Brahmā; लोकपितामहः (lōkapitāmahaḥ) - the grandsire of the worlds; तथा (tathā) - likewise; एव (ēva) - indeed; भगवन्तौ (bhagavantau) - the blessed pair; तौ (tau) - those two; नरनारायणौ (naranārāyaṇau) - Nara and Nārāyaṇa; ऋषी (r̥ṣī) - sages;]
Brahmā, the grandsire of the worlds, is indeed imperishable and eternal; likewise, those two blessed sages, Nara and Nārāyaṇa. (5-95-2)
आदित्यानां हि सर्वेषां विष्णुरेकः सनातनः। अजय्यश्चाव्ययश्चैव शाश्वतः प्रभुरीश्वरः ॥५-९५-३॥
ādityānāṁ hi sarvēṣāṁ viṣṇurēkaḥ sanātanaḥ। ajayyaścāvyayaścaiva śāśvataḥ prabhurīśvaraḥ ॥5-95-3॥
[आदित्यानाम् (ādityānām) - among the Ādityas; हि (hi) - truly; सर्वेषाम् (sarvēṣām) - of all; विष्णुः (viṣṇuḥ) - Viṣṇu; एकः (ēkaḥ) - the one; सनातनः (sanātanaḥ) - eternal; अजय्यः (ajayyaḥ) - unconquerable; च (ca) - and; अव्ययः (avyayaḥ) - imperishable; च (ca) - and; शाश्वतः (śāśvataḥ) - everlasting; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - lord; ईश्वरः (īśvaraḥ) - ruler;]
Among all the Ādityas, Viṣṇu alone is the eternal one—unconquerable, imperishable, everlasting, the lord, the ruler. (5-95-3)
निमित्तमरणास्त्वन्ये चन्द्रसूर्यौ मही जलम्। वायुरग्निस्तथाकाशं ग्रहास्तारागणास्तथा ॥५-९५-४॥
nimittamaraṇāstvanyē candrasūryau mahī jalam। vāyuragnistathākāśaṁ grahāstārāgaṇāstathā ॥5-95-4॥
[निमित्तमरणाः (nimittamaraṇāḥ) - with incidental death; तु (tu) - but; अन्ये (anyē) - the others; चन्द्रसूर्यौ (candrasūryau) - the Moon and Sun; मही (mahī) - the Earth; जलम् (jalam) - water; वायुः (vāyuḥ) - wind; अग्निः (agniḥ) - fire; तथा (tathā) - and; आकाशं (ākāśaṁ) - space; ग्रहाः (grahāḥ) - the planets; तारा-गणाः (tārā-gaṇāḥ) - the groups of stars; तथा (tathā) - and;]
But all the others—the Moon and the Sun, the Earth, water, wind, fire, space, the planets, and the stars—are subject to incidental destruction. (5-95-4)
ते च क्षयान्ते जगतो हित्वा लोकत्रयं सदा। क्षयं गच्छन्ति वै सर्वे सृज्यन्ते च पुनः पुनः ॥५-९५-५॥
tē ca kṣayāntē jagatō hitvā lōkatrayaṁ sadā। kṣayaṁ gacchanti vai sarvē sr̥jyantē ca punaḥ punaḥ ॥5-95-5॥
[ते (tē) - they; च (ca) - and; क्षयान्ते (kṣayāntē) - when at an end; जगतः (jagataḥ) - of the world; हित्वा (hitvā) - having left; लोकत्रयम् (lōkatrayam) - the three worlds; सदा (sadā) - always; क्षयम् (kṣayam) - destruction; गच्छन्ति (gacchanti) - go; वै (vai) - indeed; सर्वे (sarvē) - all; सृज्यन्ते (sr̥jyantē) - are created; च (ca) - and; पुनः पुनः (punaḥ punaḥ) - again and again;]
And when their time in the world ends, always leaving the three worlds, they all indeed pass into destruction and are created again and again. (5-95-5)
मुहूर्तमरणास्त्वन्ये मानुषा मृगपक्षिणः। तिर्यग्योन्यश्च ये चान्ये जीवलोकचराः स्मृताः ॥५-९५-६॥
muhūrtamaraṇāstvanyē mānuṣā mr̥gapakṣiṇaḥ। tiryagyōnyaśca yē cānyē jīvalōkacarāḥ smr̥tāḥ ॥5-95-6॥
[मुहूर्तमरणाः (muhūrtamaraṇāḥ) - whose death comes in a moment; त् (t) - but; अन्ये (anyē) - others; मानुषाः (mānuṣāḥ) - humans; मृग (mr̥ga) - animals; पक्षिणः (pakṣiṇaḥ) - birds; तिर्यग्योन्यः (tiryagyōnyaḥ) - creatures of other non-human births; च (ca) - and; ये (yē) - those who; च (ca) - and; अन्ये (anyē) - others; जीवलोकचराः (jīvalōkacarāḥ) - dwelling among mortals; स्मृताः (smr̥tāḥ) - are considered;]
But others meet their end in a moment—humans, animals, birds, other creatures born in non-human wombs, and all other beings who are considered to dwell among mortals. (5-95-6)
भूयिष्ठेन तु राजानः श्रियं भुक्त्वायुषः क्षये। मरणं प्रतिगच्छन्ति भोक्तुं सुकृतदुष्कृतम् ॥५-९५-७॥
bhūyiṣṭhēna tu rājānaḥ śriyaṁ bhuktvāyuṣaḥ kṣayē। maraṇaṁ pratigacchanti bhōktuṁ sukr̥taduṣkr̥tam ॥5-95-7॥
[भूयिष्ठेन (bhūyiṣṭhēna) - mostly; तु (tu) - but; राजानः (rājānaḥ) - kings; श्रियम् (śriyam) - prosperity; भुक्त्वा (bhuktvā) - having enjoyed; आयुषः (āyuṣaḥ) - of life; क्षये (kṣayē) - at the end; मरणम् (maraṇam) - death; प्रतिगच्छन्ति (pratigacchanti) - undergo; भोक्तुम् (bhōktum) - to experience; सुकृतदुष्कृतम् (sukr̥taduṣkr̥tam) - the results of good and bad deeds;]
But most kings, after enjoying prosperity and when their lives end, encounter death to experience the results of their good and bad deeds. (5-95-7)
स भवान्धर्मपुत्रेण शमं कर्तुमिहार्हति। पाण्डवाः कुरवश्चैव पालयन्तु वसुन्धराम् ॥५-९५-८॥
sa bhavāndharmaputrēṇa śamaṁ kartumihārhati। pāṇḍavāḥ kuravaścaiva pālayantu vasundharām ॥5-95-8॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; भवान् (bhavān) - your highness; धर्मपुत्रेण (dharmaputrēṇa) - with Yudhishthira; शमं (śamaṁ) - peace; कर्तुम् (kartum) - to make; इह (iha) - here; अर्हति (arhati) - ought; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pandavas; कुरवः च एव (kuravaḥ ca ēva) - and the Kurus; पालयन्तु (pālayantu) - should rule/protect; वसुन्धराम् (vasundharām) - the earth;]
Therefore, your highness ought to make peace here with Yudhishthira, so that both the Pandavas and the Kurus may rule the earth. (5-95-8)
बलवानहमित्येव न मन्तव्यं सुयोधन। बलवन्तो हि बलिभिर्दृश्यन्ते पुरुषर्षभ ॥५-९५-९॥
balavānahamityēva na mantavyaṁ suyōdhana। balavantō hi balibhirdr̥śyantē puruṣarṣabha ॥5-95-9॥
[बलवान् (balavān) - strong; अहम् (aham) - I; इति एव (iti ēva) - in this way alone; न मन्तव्यं (na mantavyaṁ) - should not be thought; सुयोधन (suyōdhana) - Suyodhana; बलवन्तः (balavantaḥ) - the strong; हि (hi) - indeed; बलिभिः (balibhiḥ) - by the powerful; दृश्यन्ते (dr̥śyantē) - are seen; पुरुषर्षभ (puruṣarṣabha) - Bull among men;]
Do not think, Suyodhana, merely that 'I am strong.' For, O bull among men, the strong are indeed seen to be overcome by the more powerful. (5-95-9)
न बलं बलिनां मध्ये बलं भवति कौरव। बलवन्तो हि ते सर्वे पाण्डवा देवविक्रमाः ॥५-९५-१०॥
na balaṁ balināṁ madhyē balaṁ bhavati kaurava। balavantō hi tē sarvē pāṇḍavā dēvavikramāḥ ॥5-95-10॥
[न (na) - not; बलं (balaṁ) - strength; बलिनां (balināṁ) - of the strong; मध्ये (madhyē) - among; बलं (balaṁ) - strength; भवति (bhavati) - prevails; कौरव (kaurava) - Kaurava; बलवन्तः (balavantaḥ) - the strong; हि (hi) - indeed; ते (tē) - they; सर्वे (sarvē) - all; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pandavas; देवविक्रमाः (dēvavikramāḥ) - have the strength of gods;]
Kaurava, strength does not prevail among the strong, for all the Pandavas are mighty—possessed of godlike power. (5-95-10)
अत्राप्युदाहरन्तीममितिहासं पुरातनम्। मातलेर्दातुकामस्य कन्यां मृगयतो वरम् ॥५-९५-११॥
atrāpyudāharantīmamitihāsaṁ purātanam। mātalērdātukāmasya kanyāṁ mr̥gayatō varam ॥5-95-11॥
[अत्र अपि उदाहरन्ति इमम् इतिहासम् पुरातनम् (atra api udāharanti imam itihāsam purātanam) - Here too, they cite this ancient story; मातलेः दातुकामस्य कन्यां मृगयतः वरम् (mātalēḥ dātukāmasya kanyāṁ mr̥gayataḥ varam) - of Mātali, who was seeking a suitable husband for his daughter;]
Here too, they tell this ancient story of Mātali, who was seeking a suitable husband for his daughter. (5-95-11)
मतस्त्रैलोक्यराजस्य मातलिर्नाम सारथिः। तस्यैकैव कुले कन्या रूपतो लोकविश्रुता ॥५-९५-१२॥
matastrailōkyarājasya mātalirnāma sārathiḥ। tasyaikaiva kulē kanyā rūpatō lōkaviśrutā ॥5-95-12॥
[मतः (mataḥ) - the mind; त्रैलोक्यराजस्य (trailōkyarājasya) - of the king of the three worlds; मातलिः (mātaliḥ) - Mātali; नाम (nāma) - by name; सारथि (sārathi) - charioteer; तस्य (tasya) - his; एका एव (ēkā ēva) - only one; कुले (kulē) - in his family; कन्या (kanyā) - daughter; रूपतः (rūpataḥ) - for her beauty; लोकविश्रुता (lōkaviśrutā) - renowned in the world;]
Mātali, the charioteer named in the mind of the king of the three worlds, had in his family only one daughter, renowned throughout the world for her beauty. (5-95-12)
गुणकेशीति विख्याता नाम्ना सा देवरूपिणी। श्रिया च वपुषा चैव स्त्रियोऽन्याः सातिरिच्यते ॥५-९५-१३॥
guṇakēśīti vikhyātā nāmnā sā dēvarūpiṇī। śriyā ca vapuṣā caiva striyō’nyāḥ sātiricyatē ॥5-95-13॥
[गुणकेशी (guṇakēśī) - Guṇakeśī; इति (iti) - thus; विख्याता (vikhyātā) - well-known; नाम्ना (nāmnā) - by name; सा (sā) - she; देवरूपिणी (dēvarūpiṇī) - divine in form; श्रिया (śriyā) - in beauty; च (ca) - and; वपुषा (vapuṣā) - in form; च (ca) - and; एव (ēva) - indeed; स्त्रियः (striyaḥ) - the women; अन्याः (anyāḥ) - other; सा (sā) - she; अतिरिच्यते (atiricyatē) - surpasses;]
She was named Guṇakeśī and was well-known by that name. Divine in form, she indeed surpassed other women in beauty and appearance. (5-95-13)
तस्याः प्रदानसमयं मातलिः सह भार्यया। ज्ञात्वा विममृशे राजंस्तत्परः परिचिन्तयन् ॥५-९५-१४॥
tasyāḥ pradānasamayaṁ mātaliḥ saha bhāryayā। jñātvā vimamr̥śē rājaṁstatparaḥ paricintayan ॥5-95-14॥
[तस्याः (tasyāḥ) - her; प्रदानसमयं (pradānasamayaṁ) - the time of her gifting in marriage; मातलिः (mātaliḥ) - Mātali; सह भार्यया (saha bhāryayā) - with his wife; ज्ञात्वा (jñātvā) - knowing; विममृशे (vimamr̥śē) - pondered; राजन् (rājan) - O king; तत्परः (tatparaḥ) - focusing on that; परिचिन्तयन् (paricintayan) - reflecting;]
O king, Mātali, knowing that the time had come for her to be given in marriage, together with his wife, focused on that and reflected upon it. (5-95-14)
धिक्खल्वलघुशीलानामुच्छ्रितानां यशस्विनाम्। नराणामृद्धसत्त्वानां कुले कन्याप्ररोहणम् ॥५-९५-१५॥
dhikkhalvalaghuśīlānāmucchritānāṁ yaśasvinām। narāṇāmr̥ddhasattvānāṁ kulē kanyāprarōhaṇam ॥5-95-15॥
[धिक् (dhik) - shame on; खलु (khalu) - indeed; अलघुशीलानाम् (alaghuśīlānām) - of those without low character; उच्छ्रितानाम् (ucchritānām) - of the eminent; यशस्विनाम् (yaśasvinām) - of the illustrious; नराणाम् (narāṇām) - of men; ऋद्धसत्त्वानाम् (r̥ddhasattvānām) - of those of noble spirit; कुले (kulē) - in a family; कन्या (kanyā) - a maiden; प्ररोहणम् (prarōhaṇam) - taking root;]
Indeed, shame on the taking root of a maiden in the family of illustrious, eminent men who are not of low character and have noble spirit. (5-95-15)
मातुः कुलं पितृकुलं यत्र चैव प्रदीयते। कुलत्रयं संशयितं कुरुते कन्यका सताम् ॥५-९५-१६॥
mātuḥ kulaṁ pitr̥kulaṁ yatra caiva pradīyatē। kulatrayaṁ saṁśayitaṁ kurutē kanyakā satām ॥5-95-16॥
[मातुः कुलम् (mātuḥ kulam) - the mother's family; पितृकुलम् (pitr̥kulam) - the father's family; यत्र (yatra) - where; च (ca) - and; एव (ēva) - also; प्रदीयते (pradīyatē) - is given; कुलत्रयम् (kulatrayam) - three families; संशयितम् (saṁśayitam) - placed in doubt; कुरुते (kurutē) - creates; कन्यका (kanyakā) - a maiden; सताम् (satām) - of good people;]
Where the maiden is given, she creates doubt for three families—the father's, the mother's, and that to which she is given—among honourable people. (5-95-16)
देवमानुषलोकौ द्वौ मानसेनैव चक्षुषा। अवगाह्यैव विचितौ न च मे रोचते वरः ॥५-९५-१७॥
dēvamānuṣalōkau dvau mānasēnaiva cakṣuṣā। avagāhyaiva vicitau na ca mē rōcatē varaḥ ॥5-95-17॥
[देवमानुषलोकौ (dēvamānuṣalōkau) - the worlds of gods and humans; द्वौ (dvau) - both; मानसेनैव (mānasēnaiva) - with the mind's eye alone; चक्षुषा (cakṣuṣā) - or with vision; अवगाह्यैव (avagāhyaiva) - having entered into; विचितौ (vicitau) - having examined; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; मे (mē) - to me; रोचते (rōcatē) - is pleasing; वरः (varaḥ) - the suitor;]
Having entered and examined both the worlds of gods and humans with my mind's eye or with vision, still, the suitor does not please me. (5-95-17)
न देवान्नैव दितिजान्न गन्धर्वान्न मानुषान्। अरोचयं वरकृते तथैव बहुलानृषीन् ॥५-९५-१८॥
na dēvānnaiva ditijānna gandharvānna mānuṣān। arōcayaṁ varakr̥tē tathaiva bahulānr̥ṣīn ॥5-95-18॥
[न (na) - not; देवान् (dēvān) - the gods; न (na) - not; एव (ēva) - even; दितिजान् (ditijān) - the Dānavas; न (na) - not; गन्धर्वान् (gandharvān) - the Gandharvas; न (na) - not; मानुषान् (mānuṣān) - humans; अरोचयम् (arōcayam) - I liked; वरकृते (varakr̥tē) - for the choice of a boon; तथैव (tathaiva) - likewise; बहुलान् (bahulān) - many; ऋषीन् (r̥ṣīn) - seers;]
For the sake of choosing a boon, I did not take a liking to the gods, nor the Dānavas, nor the Gandharvas, nor humans—nor, likewise, to the many seers. (5-95-18)
भार्यया तु स संमन्त्र्य सह रात्रौ सुधर्मया। मातलिर्नागलोकाय चकार गमने मतिम् ॥५-९५-१९॥
bhāryayā tu sa saṁmantrya saha rātrau sudharmayā। mātalirnāgalōkāya cakāra gamanē matim ॥5-95-19॥
[भार्यया (bhāryayā) - with his wife; तु (tu) - but; स (sa) - he; संमन्त्र्य (saṁmantrya) - after consulting; सह (saha) - together with; रात्रौ (rātrau) - during the night; सुधर्मया (sudharmayā) - Sudharma; मातलिः (mātaliḥ) - Mātali; नागलोकाय (nāgalōkāya) - to the world of the Nāgas; चकार (cakāra) - made; गमने (gamanē) - on going; मतिम् (matim) - his decision;]
But after consulting with his wife Sudharma during the night, Mātali resolved to go to the realm of the Nāgas. (5-95-19)
न मे देवमनुष्येषु गुणकेश्याः समो वरः। रूपतो दृश्यते कश्चिन्नागेषु भविता ध्रुवम् ॥५-९५-२०॥
na mē dēvamanuṣyēṣu guṇakēśyāḥ samō varaḥ। rūpatō dr̥śyatē kaścinnāgēṣu bhavitā dhruvam ॥5-95-20॥
[न (na) - not; मे (mē) - for me; देवमनुष्येषु (dēvamanuṣyēṣu) - among gods and humans; गुणकेश्याः (guṇakēśyāḥ) - of Guṇakeśī; समः (samaḥ) - equal; वरः (varaḥ) - suitor; रूपतः (rūpataḥ) - in beauty; दृश्यते (dr̥śyatē) - is seen; कश्चित् (kaścit) - anyone; नागेषु (nāgēṣu) - among the nāgas; भविता (bhavitā) - will be; ध्रुवम् (dhruvam) - surely;]
Among gods and humans, I see no suitor equal to Guṇakeśī in beauty; surely there will not be anyone among the nāgas either. (5-95-20)
इत्यामन्त्र्य सुधर्मां स कृत्वा चाभिप्रदक्षिणम्। कन्यां शिरस्युपाघ्राय प्रविवेश महीतलम् ॥५-९५-२१॥
ityāmantrya sudharmāṁ sa kr̥tvā cābhipradakṣiṇam। kanyāṁ śirasyupāghrāya pravivēśa mahītalam ॥5-95-21॥
[इति आमन्त्र्य सुधर्मां (iti āmantrya sudharmāṁ) - thus having taken leave of Sudharmā; स (sa) - he; कृत्वा च अभिप्रदक्षिणम् (kr̥tvā ca abhipradakṣiṇam) - after circumambulating her respectfully; कन्यां शिरसि उपाघ्राय (kanyāṁ śirasi upāghrāya) - touching the girl's head with his own nose; प्रविवेश महीतलम् (pravivēśa mahītalam) - entered the earth;]
Thus, after taking leave of Sudharmā, circumambulating her respectfully, and touching the girl's head with his own nose, he entered the earth. (5-95-21)
