नारद उवाच॥
nārada uvāca॥
[नारद (nārada) - Nārada; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
Nārada said:
हिरण्यपुरमित्येतत्ख्यातं पुरवरं महत्। दैत्यानां दानवानां च मायाशतविचारिणाम् ॥५-९८-१॥
hiraṇyapuramityētatkhyātaṁ puravaraṁ mahat। daityānāṁ dānavānāṁ ca māyāśatavicāriṇām ॥5-98-1॥
[हिरण्यपुरम् (hiraṇyapuram) - Hiranyapura; इति (iti) - thus; एतत् (ētat) - this; ख्यातम् (khyātam) - is known; पुरवरम् (puravaram) - excellent city; महत् (mahat) - great; दैत्यानाम् (daityānām) - of the Daityas; दानवानाम् (dānavānām) - of the Danavas; च (ca) - and; मायाशतविचारिणाम् (māyāśatavicāriṇām) - masters of a hundred kinds of magic;]
This great and excellent city, known as Hiranyapura, belonged to the Daityas and Danavas, who were masters of a hundred magical arts. (5-98-1)
अनल्पेन प्रयत्नेन निर्मितं विश्वकर्मणा। मयेन मनसा सृष्टं पातालतलमाश्रितम् ॥५-९८-२॥
analpēna prayatnēna nirmitaṁ viśvakarmaṇā। mayēna manasā sr̥ṣṭaṁ pātālatalamāśritam ॥5-98-2॥
[अनल्पेन प्रयत्नेन (analpēna prayatnēna) - with great effort; निर्मितं (nirmitaṁ) - constructed; विश्वकर्मणा (viśvakarmaṇā) - by Viśvakarman; मयेन (mayēna) - by Maya; मनसा (manasā) - by thought; सृष्टं (sr̥ṣṭaṁ) - created; पातालतलम् (pātālatalam) - the netherworld region; आश्रितम् (āśritam) - inhabited;]
Constructed by Viśvakarman with immense effort, created through Maya's thought, and dwelling in the netherworld region. (5-98-2)
अत्र मायासहस्राणि विकुर्वाणा महौजसः। दानवा निवसन्ति स्म शूरा दत्तवराः पुरा ॥५-९८-३॥
atra māyāsahasrāṇi vikurvāṇā mahaujasaḥ। dānavā nivasanti sma śūrā dattavarāḥ purā ॥5-98-3॥
[अत्र (atra) - here; मायासहस्राणि (māyāsahasrāṇi) - thousands of magical powers; विकुर्वाणाः (vikurvāṇāḥ) - displaying; महौजसः (mahaujasaḥ) - of great strength; दानवाः (dānavāḥ) - the Dānavas; निवसन्ति स्म (nivasanti sma) - used to dwell; शूराः (śūrāḥ) - valiant; दत्तवराः (dattavarāḥ) - granted boons; पुरा (purā) - in the past;]
Here, in ages past, valiant Dānavas endowed with boons, possessed of great strength and displaying thousands of magical powers, used to dwell. (5-98-3)
नैते शक्रेण नान्येन वरुणेन यमेन वा। शक्यन्ते वशमानेतुं तथैव धनदेन च ॥५-९८-४॥
naitē śakrēṇa nānyēna varuṇēna yamēna vā। śakyantē vaśamānētuṁ tathaiva dhanadēna ca ॥5-98-4॥
[न (na) - not; एते (ētē) - these; शक्रेण (śakrēṇa) - by Śakra; न (na) - nor; अन्येन (anyēna) - by another; वरुणेन (varuṇēna) - by Varuṇa; यमेन (yamēna) - by Yama; वा (vā) - or; शक्यन्ते (śakyantē) - can; वशम् (vaśam) - control; आनेतुम् (ānētum) - be brought under; तथैव (tathaiva) - likewise; धनदेन (dhanadēna) - by Dhanada (Kubera); च (ca) - and;]
These cannot be brought under control by Śakra, or by any other, nor by Varuṇa, Yama, or Dhanada (Kubera). (5-98-4)
असुराः कालखञ्जाश्च तथा विष्णुपदोद्भवाः। नैरृता यातुधानाश्च ब्रह्मवेदोद्भवाश्च ये ॥५-९८-५॥
asurāḥ kālakhañjāśca tathā viṣṇupadōdbhavāḥ। nairr̥tā yātudhānāśca brahmavēdōdbhavāśca yē ॥5-98-5॥
[असुराः (asurāḥ) - the Asuras; कालखञ्जाः (kālakhañjāḥ) - the Kālakhānjās; च (ca) - and; तथा (tathā) - also; विष्णुपद-उद्भवाः (viṣṇupada-udbhavāḥ) - those who arose from Viṣṇu’s feet; नैरृता (nairr̥tā) - the Nairṛtas; यातुधानाः (yātudhānāḥ) - the Rākṣasas; च (ca) - and; ब्रह्मवेद-उद्भवाः (brahmavēda-udbhavāḥ) - those who arose from the Brahmaveda; च (ca) - and; ये (yē) - who;]
The Asuras, the Kālakhānjās, those also born from Viṣṇu’s feet, the Nairṛtas, the Rākṣasas, those who arose from the Brahmaveda— (5-98-5)
दंष्ट्रिणो भीमरूपाश्च निवसन्त्यात्मरक्षिणः। मायावीर्योपसम्पन्ना निवसन्त्यात्मरक्षिणः ॥५-९८-६॥
daṁṣṭriṇō bhīmarūpāśca nivasantyātmarakṣiṇaḥ। māyāvīryōpasampannā nivasantyātmarakṣiṇaḥ ॥5-98-6॥
[दंष्ट्रिणः (daṁṣṭriṇaḥ) - fang-toothed; भीमरूपाः (bhīmarūpāḥ) - terrifying in form; च (ca) - and; निवसन्ति (nivasanti) - they dwell; आत्मरक्षिणः (ātmarakṣiṇaḥ) - self-defenders; मायावीर्योपसम्पन्नाः (māyāvīryōpasampannāḥ) - endowed with magical power and might; निवसन्ति (nivasanti) - they dwell; आत्मरक्षिणः (ātmarakṣiṇaḥ) - self-defenders;]
Fanged and terrifying in appearance, endowed with magical power and might, these self-defenders dwell here. (5-98-6)
निवातकवचा नाम दानवा युद्धदुर्मदाः। जानासि च यथा शक्रो नैताञ्शक्नोति बाधितुम् ॥५-९८-७॥
nivātakavacā nāma dānavā yuddhadurmadāḥ। jānāsi ca yathā śakrō naitāñśaknōti bādhitum ॥5-98-7॥
[निवातकवचा नाम (nivātakavacā nāma) - called the Nivātakavacas; दानवा (dānavā) - daityas; युद्धदुर्मदाः (yuddhadurmadāḥ) - arrogant in battle; जानासि (jānāsi) - you know; च (ca) - and; यथा (yathā) - how; शक्रः (śakraḥ) - Indra; न (na) - not; एतान् (ētān) - them; शक्नोति (śaknōti) - is able; बाधितुम् (bādhitum) - to subdue;]
The arrogant daityas known as the Nivātakavacas—you know how even Indra is unable to subdue them. (5-98-7)
बहुशो मातले त्वं च तव पुत्रश्च गोमुखः। निर्भग्नो देवराजश्च सहपुत्रः शचीपतिः ॥५-९८-८॥
bahuśō mātalē tvaṁ ca tava putraśca gōmukhaḥ। nirbhagnō dēvarājaśca sahaputraḥ śacīpatiḥ ॥5-98-8॥
[बहुशः (bahuśaḥ) - many times; मातले (mātalē) - Mātali; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; च (ca) - and; तव (tava) - your; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; च (ca) - and; गोमुखः (gōmukhaḥ) - Gomukha; निर्भग्नः (nirbhagnaḥ) - defeated; देवराजः (dēvarājaḥ) - the king of the gods; च (ca) - and; सहपुत्रः (sahaputraḥ) - with his son; शचीपतिः (śacīpatiḥ) - the husband of Śacī;]
Many times, Mātali, you and your son Gomukha, and even the king of the gods himself—the husband of Śacī together with his son—were defeated. (5-98-8)
पश्य वेश्मानि रौक्माणि मातले राजतानि च। कर्मणा विधियुक्तेन युक्तान्युपगतानि च ॥५-९८-९॥
paśya vēśmāni raukmāṇi mātalē rājatāni ca। karmaṇā vidhiyuktēna yuktānyupagatāni ca ॥5-98-9॥
[पश्य (paśya) - look; वेश्मानि (vēśmāni) - palaces; रौक्माणि (raukmāṇi) - made of gold; मातले (mātalē) - Mātali; राजतानि (rājatāni) - and of silver; च (ca) - and; कर्मणा (karmaṇā) - by the action; विधियुक्तेन (vidhiyuktēna) - rightly performed; युक्तानि (yuktāni) - furnished; उपगतानि (upagatāni) - attained; च (ca) - and;]
Look, Mātali, at these palaces of gold and silver, furnished and attained by actions rightly performed. (5-98-9)
वैडूर्यहरितानीव प्रवालरुचिराणि च। अर्कस्फटिकशुभ्राणि वज्रसारोज्ज्वलानि च ॥५-९८-१०॥
vaiḍūryaharitānīva pravālarucirāṇi ca। arkasphaṭikaśubhrāṇi vajrasārōjjvalāni ca ॥5-98-10॥
[वैडूर्यहरितानि (vaiḍūryaharitāni) - green like beryl; इव (iva) - as if; प्रवालरुचिराणि (pravālarucirāṇi) - resplendent like coral; च (ca) - and; अर्कस्फटिकशुभ्राणि (arkasphaṭikaśubhrāṇi) - clear like rock crystal; वज्रसारोज्ज्वलानि (vajrasārōjjvalāni) - brilliant like diamond essence; च (ca) - and;]
Green as beryl, brilliant as coral, pure as rock crystal, and gleaming with the brightness of diamond essence. (5-98-10)
पार्थिवानीव चाभान्ति पुनर्नगमयानि च। शैलानीव च दृश्यन्ते तारकाणीव चाप्युत ॥५-९८-११॥
pārthivānīva cābhānti punarnagamayāni ca। śailānīva ca dr̥śyantē tārakāṇīva cāpyuta ॥5-98-11॥
[पार्थिवानि (pārthivāni) - earthly; इव (iva) - like; च (ca) - and; आभान्ति (ābhānti) - shine; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; नगमयानि (nagamayāni) - mountain-made; च (ca) - and; शैलानि (śailāni) - mountains; इव (iva) - like; च (ca) - and; दृश्यन्ते (dr̥śyantē) - are seen; तारकानि (tārakāni) - stars; इव (iva) - like; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; उत (uta) - indeed;]
Some shine like earthly objects, some like mountains, and some appear like stars as well. (5-98-11)
सूर्यरूपाणि चाभान्ति दीप्ताग्निसदृशानि च। मणिजालविचित्राणि प्रांशूनि निबिडानि च ॥५-९८-१२॥
sūryarūpāṇi cābhānti dīptāgnisadr̥śāni ca। maṇijālavicitrāṇi prāṁśūni nibiḍāni ca ॥5-98-12॥
[सूर्यरूपाणि (sūryarūpāṇi) - sun-like; च (ca) - and; आभान्ति (ābhānti) - shine; दीप्त-अग्नि-सदृशानि (dīpta-agni-sadr̥śāni) - like blazing fire; च (ca) - and; मणि-जाल-विचित्राणि (maṇi-jāla-vicitrāṇi) - adorned with networks of gems; प्रांशूनि (prāṁśūni) - lofty; निबिडानि (nibiḍāni) - dense; च (ca) - and;]
Some shine like the sun and some like blazing fire; some are lofty, dense, and adorned with networks of gems. (5-98-12)
नैतानि शक्यं निर्देष्टुं रूपतो द्रव्यतस्तथा। गुणतश्चैव सिद्धानि प्रमाणगुणवन्ति च ॥५-९८-१३॥
naitāni śakyaṁ nirdēṣṭuṁ rūpatō dravyatastathā। guṇataścaiva siddhāni pramāṇaguṇavanti ca ॥5-98-13॥
[न (na) - not; एतानि (ētāni) - these; शक्यं (śakyaṁ) - can; निर्देष्टुं (nirdēṣṭuṁ) - be described; रूपतः (rūpataḥ) - by form; द्रव्यतः (dravyataḥ) - by substance; तथा (tathā) - in that way; गुणतः (guṇataḥ) - by qualities; च (ca) - and; एव (ēva) - also; सिद्धानि (siddhāni) - perfected; प्रमाण (pramāṇa) - of measures; गुणवन्ति (guṇavanti) - possessed of qualities; च (ca) - and;]
These cannot be described—whether by their form, their substance, or their qualities; they are perfected, possess measures, and have qualities. (5-98-13)
आक्रीडान्पश्य दैत्यानां तथैव शयनान्युत। रत्नवन्ति महार्हाणि भाजनान्यासनानि च ॥५-९८-१४॥
ākrīḍānpaśya daityānāṁ tathaiva śayanānyuta। ratnavanti mahārhāṇi bhājanānyāsanāni ca ॥5-98-14॥
[आक्रीडान् (ākrīḍān) - playgrounds; पश्य (paśya) - see; दैत्यानाम् (daityānām) - of the Dānavas; तथैव (tathaiva) - also; शयनानि (śayanāni) - sleeping places; उत (uta) - indeed; रत्नवन्ति (ratnavanti) - adorned with jewels; महार्हाणि (mahārhāṇi) - very precious; भाजनानि (bhājanāni) - vessels; आसनानि (āsanāni) - seats; च (ca) - and;]
See the playgrounds of the Dānavas, and likewise their sleeping places; vessels and seats adorned with jewels, all extremely precious. (5-98-14)
जलदाभांस्तथा शैलांस्तोयप्रस्रवणान्वितान्। कामपुष्पफलांश्चैव पादपान्कामचारिणः ॥५-९८-१५॥
jaladābhāṁstathā śailāṁstōyaprasravaṇānvitān। kāmapuṣpaphalāṁścaiva pādapānkāmacāriṇaḥ ॥5-98-15॥
[जलदाभान् (jaladābhān) - cloud-like; तथा (tathā) - also; शैलान् (śailān) - mountains; तोयप्रस्रवणान्वितान् (tōyaprasravaṇānvitān) - adorned with flowing water; कामपुष्पफलान् (kāmapuṣpaphalān) - bearing desired flowers and fruits; च (ca) - and; एव (ēva) - indeed; पादपान् (pādapān) - trees; कामचारिणः (kāmacāriṇaḥ) - moving at will;]
Also, cloud-like mountains adorned with flowing water, and trees bearing whatever flowers and fruits are desired, moving at will. (5-98-15)
मातले कश्चिदत्रापि रुचितस्ते वरो भवेत्। अथ वान्यां दिशं भूमेर्गच्छाव यदि मन्यसे ॥५-९८-१६॥
mātalē kaścidatrāpi rucitastē varō bhavēt। atha vānyāṁ diśaṁ bhūmērgacchāva yadi manyasē ॥5-98-16॥
[मातले (mātalē) - Mātali; कश्चित् (kaścit) - some; अत्र अपि (atra api) - here too; रुचितः (rucitaḥ) - pleasing; ते (tē) - to you; वरः (varaḥ) - place; भवेत् (bhavēt) - might be; अथ वा (atha vā) - or else; अन्यां (anyāṁ) - another; दिशम् (diśam) - direction; भूमेः (bhūmēḥ) - of the earth; गच्छाव (gacchāva) - let's go; यदि मन्यसे (yadi manyasē) - if you think [so];]
Mātali, if there is any place here that you like, let it be so. Or, if you prefer, shall we go to another part of the earth? (5-98-16)
कण्व उवाच॥

[कण्व (kaṇva) - Kaṇva; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
Kaṇva said:
मातलिस्त्वब्रवीदेनं भाषमाणं तथाविधम्। देवर्षे नैव मे कार्यं विप्रियं त्रिदिवौकसाम् ॥५-९८-१७॥
mātalistvabravīdēnaṁ bhāṣamāṇaṁ tathāvidham। dēvarṣē naiva mē kāryaṁ vipriyaṁ tridivaukasām ॥5-98-17॥
[मातलिः (mātaliḥ) - Mātali; त्व् (tv) - then; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; एनम् (ēnam) - to him; भाषमाणम् (bhāṣamāṇam) - speaking; तथाविधम् (tathāvidham) - in that manner; देवर्षे (dēvarṣē) - O sage of the gods; न एव (na ēva) - indeed not; मे (mē) - my; कार्यं (kāryaṁ) - purpose; विप्रियं (vipriyaṁ) - offensive; त्रिदिवौकसाम् (tridivaukasām) - to the dwellers of heaven;]
Then Mātali said to him, as he was speaking in that way: "O sage of the gods, I have no purpose that is offensive to the dwellers of heaven." (5-98-17)
नित्यानुषक्तवैरा हि भ्रातरो देवदानवाः। अरिपक्षेण सम्बन्धं रोचयिष्याम्यहं कथम् ॥५-९८-१८॥
nityānuṣaktavairā hi bhrātarō dēvadānavāḥ। aripakṣēṇa sambandhaṁ rōcayiṣyāmyahaṁ katham ॥5-98-18॥
[नित्य-अनुषक्त-वैरा (nitya-anuṣakta-vairā) - with perpetual enmity; हि (hi) - indeed; भ्रातरः (bhrātaraḥ) - the brothers; देव-दानवाः (dēva-dānavāḥ) - the gods and the Dānavas; अरि-पक्षेण (ari-pakṣēṇa) - with the side of the enemy; सम्बन्धं (sambandhaṁ) - an alliance; रोचयिष्यामि (rōcayiṣyāmi) - would I approve; अहं (ahaṁ) - I; कथम् (katham) - how;]
For the gods and the Dānavas are brothers, but are bound in perpetual enmity; so how could I approve of an alliance with the side of the enemy? (5-98-18)
अन्यत्र साधु गच्छावो द्रष्टुं नार्हामि दानवान्। जानामि तु तथात्मानं दित्सात्मकमलं यथा ॥५-९८-१९॥
anyatra sādhu gacchāvō draṣṭuṁ nārhāmi dānavān। jānāmi tu tathātmānaṁ ditsātmakamalaṁ yathā ॥5-98-19॥
[अन्यत्र (anyatra) - elsewhere; साधु (sādhu) - let us go; गच्छावः (gacchāvaḥ) - we should go; द्रष्टुम् (draṣṭum) - to see; न अर्हामि (na arhāmi) - I do not wish; दानवान् (dānavān) - the Dānavas; जानामि तु (jānāmi tu) - but I know; तथा (tathā) - just so; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - myself; दित्सात्मकम् (ditsātmakam) - having a generous nature; अलम् (alam) - worthy; यथा (yathā) - as;]
Let us go somewhere else; I do not wish to see the Dānavas. But I know myself, that I am indeed of a generous nature, worthy as such. (5-98-19)
