गालव उवाच॥
Gālava said:
महावीर्यो महीपालः काशीनामीश्वरः प्रभुः। दिवोदास इति ख्यातो भैमसेनिर्नराधिपः ॥५-११५-१॥
The mighty king, lord of the Kashi people, renowned as Divodasa, the son of Bhimasena and ruler of men. (5-115-1)
तत्र गच्छावहे भद्रे शनैरागच्छ मा शुचः। धार्मिकः संयमे युक्तः सत्यश्चैव जनेश्वरः ॥५-११५-२॥
Let us go there, dear lady, come slowly and do not worry. He is righteous, endowed with self-control, and indeed truthful—the lord of men. (5-115-2)
नारद उवाच॥
Nārada said:
तमुपागम्य स मुनिर्न्यायतस्तेन सत्कृतः। गालवः प्रसवस्यार्थे तं नृपं प्रत्यचोदयत् ॥५-११५-३॥
Having approached him, the sage—properly honored by him—Gālava urged that king for the purpose of offspring. (5-115-3)
दिवोदास उवाच॥
Divodāsa said:
श्रुतमेतन्मया पूर्वं किमुक्त्वा विस्तरं द्विज। काङ्क्षितो हि मयैषोऽर्थः श्रुत्वैतद्द्विजसत्तम ॥५-११५-४॥
O Brāhmaṇa, I have heard this before; after you explained it in detail, this matter became truly desired by me—having listened to this, O best of Brāhmaṇas, (5-115-4)
एतच्च मे बहुमतं यदुत्सृज्य नराधिपान्। मामेवमुपयातोऽसि भावि चैतदसंशयम् ॥५-११५-५॥
And this too I greatly value—that, forsaking the kings, you have come to me in this way; and this will certainly come to pass, without doubt. (5-115-5)
स एव विभवोऽस्माकमश्वानामपि गालव। अहमप्येकमेवास्यां जनयिष्यामि पार्थिवम् ॥५-११५-६॥
O Gālava, that same power is ours as well regarding the horses. I too will bring forth one earthly king in this matter. (5-115-6)
नारद उवाच॥
Nārada said.
तथेत्युक्त्वा द्विजश्रेष्ठः प्रादात्कन्यां महीपतेः। विधिपूर्वं च तां राजा कन्यां प्रतिगृहीतवान् ॥५-११५-७॥
Having said so, the excellent Brahmin gave the maiden to the king, and the king accepted her according to the proper ritual. (5-115-7)
रेमे स तस्यां राजर्षिः प्रभावत्यां यथा रविः। स्वाहायां च यथा वह्निर्यथा शच्यां स वासवः ॥५-११५-८॥
The royal sage enjoyed conjugal happiness with Prabhavati, just as the sun does with Svaha, fire with Svaha, and Indra with Shachi. (5-115-8)
यथा चन्द्रश्च रोहिण्यां यथा धूमोर्णया यमः। वरुणश्च यथा गौर्यां यथा चर्द्ध्यां धनेश्वरः ॥५-११५-९॥
just as the moon is with Rohiṇī, Yama with Dhūmorṇā, Varuṇa with Gaurī, and the lord of wealth with Ṛddhī (5-115-9)
यथा नारायणो लक्ष्म्यां जाह्नव्यां च यथोदधिः। यथा रुद्रश्च रुद्राण्यां यथा वेद्यां पितामहः ॥५-११५-१०॥
Just as Nārāyaṇa is in Lakṣmī, as the ocean is in Jāhnavī, as Rudra is in Rudrāṇī, as the Grandfather (Brahmā) is in the altar, (5-115-10)
अदृश्यन्त्यां च वासिष्ठो वसिष्ठश्चाक्षमालया। च्यवनश्च सुकन्यायां पुलस्त्यः सन्ध्यया यथा ॥५-११५-११॥
As the son of Vasiṣṭha was in Adṛśyantī, as Vasiṣṭha was with Akṣamālā, as Cyavana was with Sukanyā, as Pulastya was with Sandhyā, (5-115-11)
अगस्त्यश्चापि वैदर्भ्यां सावित्र्यां सत्यवान्यथा। यथा भृगुः पुलोमायामदित्यां कश्यपो यथा ॥५-११५-१२॥
As Agastya with the princess of Vidarbha, as Satyavat with Sāvitrī, as Bhṛgu with Pulomā, and as Kaśyapa with Aditi. (5-115-12)
रेणुकायां यथार्चीको हैमवत्यां च कौशिकः। बृहस्पतिश्च तारायां शुक्रश्च शतपर्वया ॥५-११५-१३॥
Just as Ṛcīka in Reṇukā, Kauśika in Haimavatī, Bṛhaspati in Tārā, and Śukra with Śataparvā... (5-115-13)
यथा भूम्यां भूमिपतिरुर्वश्यां च पुरूरवाः। ऋचीकः सत्यवत्यां च सरस्वत्यां यथा मनुः ॥५-११५-१४॥
Just as the king on the earth, Purūravas in Urvaśī, Ṛcīka in Satyavatī, and Manu in Sarasvatī... (5-115-14)
तथा तु रममाणस्य दिवोदासस्य भूपतेः। माधवी जनयामास पुत्रमेकं प्रतर्दनम् ॥५-११५-१५॥
In the same way, while Divodāsa the king was enjoying her, Mādhavī gave birth to a son, Pratardana. (5-115-15)
अथाजगाम भगवान्दिवोदासं स गालवः। समये समनुप्राप्ते वचनं चेदमब्रवीत् ॥५-११५-१६॥
Then, when the appointed time had come, the venerable Galava came to Divodasa and spoke these words: (5-115-16)
निर्यातयतु मे कन्यां भवांस्तिष्ठन्तु वाजिनः। यावदन्यत्र गच्छामि शुल्कार्थं पृथिवीपते ॥५-११५-१७॥
Let your majesty give me the girl, and let the horses stay here while I go elsewhere to obtain the bride-price, O king. (5-115-17)
दिवोदासोऽथ धर्मात्मा समये गालवस्य ताम्। कन्यां निर्यातयामास स्थितः सत्ये महीपतिः ॥५-११५-१८॥
Then the righteous king Divodāsa, steadfast in truth, gave that maiden to Gālava at the appointed time. (5-115-18)
