Nārada said:
gālavaṁ vainatēyō’tha prahasannidamabravīt। diṣṭyā kr̥tārthaṁ paśyāmi bhavantamiha vai dvija ॥5-117-1॥
Then Vainateya, smiling, said to Gālava: "By good fortune, brāhmaṇa, I see you here, with your aim accomplished." (5-117-1)
gālavastu vacaḥ śrutvā vainatēyēna bhāṣitam। caturbhāgāvaśiṣṭaṁ tadācakhyau kāryamasya hi ॥5-117-2॥
But Gālava, having heard the words spoken by the son of Vinatā, informed him of the remaining one-fourth of his task. (5-117-2)
suparṇastvabravīdēnaṁ gālavaṁ patatāṁ varaḥ। prayatnastē na kartavyō naiṣa sampatsyatē tava ॥5-117-3॥
But Suparna, the foremost of those who fly, said to Galava, "You should not make this effort; it will not succeed for you." (5-117-3)
purā hi kanyakubjē vai gādhēḥ satyavatīṁ sutām। bhāryārthē’varayatkanyāmr̥cīkastēna bhāṣitaḥ ॥5-117-4॥
Long ago, in Kanyakubja, R̥cīka asked for Gadhi's daughter Satyavati in marriage, and was addressed by him. (5-117-4)
ēkataḥśyāmakarṇānāṁ hayānāṁ candravarcasām। bhagavandīyatāṁ mahyaṁ sahasramiti gālava ॥5-117-5॥
O Gālava, let a thousand horses with dark ears and radiant like the moon be given to me on one side, O venerable one. (5-117-5)
r̥cīkastu tathētyuktvā varuṇasyālayaṁ gataḥ। aśvatīrthē hayām̐llabdhvā dattavānpārthivāya vai ॥5-117-6॥
But Ṛcīka, having said 'so be it,' went to the abode of Varuṇa. Having obtained horses at Aśvatīrtha, he gave them to the king. (5-117-6)
iṣṭvā tē puṇḍarīkēṇa dattā rājñā dvijātiṣu। tēbhyō dvē dvē śatē krītvā prāptāstē pārthivaistadā ॥5-117-7॥
Having performed a sacrifice with the white horse and given it by the king to the twice-born, two hundred each were obtained from them and then acquired by those kings. (5-117-7)
aparāṇyapi catvāri śatāni dvijasattama। nīyamānāni santārē hr̥tānyāsanvitastayā । ēvaṁ na śakyamaprāpyaṁ prāptuṁ gālava karhicit ॥5-117-8॥
O best of the twice-born, another four hundred horses, led away for the transfer, were taken with only a span's distance between them. Thus, O Gālava, it is never possible to obtain the unattainable. (5-117-8)
imāmaśvaśatābhyāṁ vai dvābhyāṁ tasmai nivēdaya। viśvāmitrāya dharmātmanṣaḍbhiraśvaśataiḥ saha ॥5-117-9॥
Indeed, offer this one with two hundred horses and the other two to him—O righteous one—to Viśvāmitra, along with six hundred horses. (5-117-9)
tatō’si gatasaṁmōhaḥ kr̥takr̥tyō dvijarṣabha ॥5-117-9॥
Then you are freed from delusion and have accomplished your task, O best of the twice-born. (5-117-9)
gālavastaṁ tathētyuktvā suparṇasahitastataḥ। ādāyāśvāṁśca kanyāṁ ca viśvāmitramupāgamat ॥5-117-10॥
Gālava replied, “So be it,” and, together with Suparṇa, then took the horses and the maiden and went to Viśvāmitra. (5-117-10)

Gālava said:
aśvānāṁ kāṅkṣitārthānāṁ ṣaḍimāni śatāni vai। śatadvayēna kanyēyaṁ bhavatā pratigr̥hyatām ॥5-117-11॥
Here are six hundred horses of the desired qualities; let this maiden be accepted by you for two hundred of them. (5-117-11)
asyāṁ rājarṣibhiḥ putrā jātā vai dhārmikāstrayaḥ। caturthaṁ janayatvēkaṁ bhavānapi narōttama ॥5-117-12॥
From her, three virtuous sons have been born by royal sages; you too, best of men, should beget a fourth. (5-117-12)
pūrṇānyēvaṁ śatānyaṣṭau turagāṇāṁ bhavantu tē। bhavatō hyanr̥ṇō bhūtvā tapaḥ kuryāṁ yathāsukham ॥5-117-13॥
May there be for you eight hundred full (herds) of horses; for, having made you free of debts, may I perform austerities in comfort. (5-117-13)

Nārada said:
viśvāmitrastu taṁ dr̥ṣṭvā gālavaṁ saha pakṣiṇā। kanyāṁ ca tāṁ varārōhāmidamityabravīdvacaḥ ॥5-117-14॥
But Viśvāmitra, seeing Gālava together with the bird and that maiden of excellent form, spoke these words: (5-117-14)
kimiyaṁ pūrvamēvēha na dattā mama gālava। putrā mamaiva catvārō bhavēyuḥ kulabhāvanāḥ ॥5-117-15॥
Gālava, why was this girl not given to me here earlier? Four sons born of me would have become upholders of my lineage. (5-117-15)
pratigr̥hṇāmi tē kanyāmēkaputraphalāya vai। aśvāścāśramamāsādya tiṣṭhantu mama sarvaśaḥ ॥5-117-16॥
I accept your daughter, but only for the sake of one son. As for the horses, let them all remain in my hermitage. (5-117-16)
sa tayā ramamāṇō’tha viśvāmitrō mahādyutiḥ। ātmajaṁ janayāmāsa mādhavīputramaṣṭakam ॥5-117-17॥
Then, the illustrious Viśvāmitra, enjoying union with her, fathered a son by Mādhavī, Aṣṭaka. (5-117-17)
jātamātraṁ sutaṁ taṁ ca viśvāmitrō mahādyutiḥ। saṁyōjyārthaistathā dharmairaśvaistaiḥ samayōjayat ॥5-117-18॥
As soon as his son was born, that glorious Viśvāmitra united him with those resources, rites, and also horses. (5-117-18)
athāṣṭakaḥ puraṁ prāyāttadā sōmapuraprabham। niryātya kanyāṁ śiṣyāya kauśikō’pi vanaṁ yayau ॥5-117-19॥
Then Aṣṭaka departed for the city, radiant like Soma's city, and Kauśika, having handed over the maiden to his disciple, went to the forest. (5-117-19)
gālavō’pi suparṇēna saha niryātya dakṣiṇām। manasābhipratītēna kanyāmidamuvāca ha ॥5-117-20॥
Gālava, together with Suparṇa, having received the southern daughter and with a heart full of joy, spoke these words to the girl. (5-117-20)
jātō dānapatiḥ putrastvayā śūrastathāparaḥ। satyadharmarataścānyō yajvā cāpi tathāparaḥ ॥5-117-21॥
Born from you was a son who is a lord of generosity; likewise another, a hero; another devoted to truth and righteousness; and yet another, a performer of sacrifices. (5-117-21)
tadāgaccha varārōhē tāritastē pitā sutaiḥ। catvāraścaiva rājānastathāhaṁ ca sumadhyamē ॥5-117-22॥
Therefore, come, O beautiful-waisted one. Your father has been rescued by his four sons—who are also kings—and by me as well, O graceful lady. (5-117-22)
gālavastvabhyanujñāya suparṇaṁ pannagāśanam। piturniryātya tāṁ kanyāṁ prayayau vanamēva ha ॥5-117-23॥
But Gālava, having given permission to Suparṇa, the eater of serpents, and having delivered that maiden from her father, indeed departed to the forest. (5-117-23)
