nārada uvāca॥
[नारद (nārada) - Nārada; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
Nārada said:
गालवं वैनतेयोऽथ प्रहसन्निदमब्रवीत्। दिष्ट्या कृतार्थं पश्यामि भवन्तमिह वै द्विज ॥५-११७-१॥
gālavaṁ vainatēyō’tha prahasannidamabravīt। diṣṭyā kr̥tārthaṁ paśyāmi bhavantamiha vai dvija ॥5-117-1॥
[गालवम् (gālavam) - at Gālava; वैनते्यः (vainatēyaḥ) - the son of Vinatā; अथ (atha) - then; प्रहसन् (prahasan) - smiling; इदम् (idam) - this; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; दिष्ट्या (diṣṭyā) - by good fortune; कृतार्थम् (kr̥tārtham) - having accomplished your aim; पश्यामि (paśyāmi) - I see; भवन्तम् (bhavantam) - you; इह (iha) - here; वै (vai) - indeed; द्विज (dvija) - brāhmaṇa;]
Then Vainateya, smiling, said to Gālava: "By good fortune, brāhmaṇa, I see you here, with your aim accomplished." (5-117-1)
गालवस्तु वचः श्रुत्वा वैनतेयेन भाषितम्। चतुर्भागावशिष्टं तदाचख्यौ कार्यमस्य हि ॥५-११७-२॥
gālavastu vacaḥ śrutvā vainatēyēna bhāṣitam। caturbhāgāvaśiṣṭaṁ tadācakhyau kāryamasya hi ॥5-117-2॥
[गालवः (gālavaḥ) - Gālava; तु (tu) - but; वचः (vacaḥ) - the words; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; वैनतेयेन (vainatēyēna) - by the son of Vinatā; भाषितम् (bhāṣitam) - spoken; चतुर्भाग (caturbhāga) - one-fourth portion; अवशिष्टं (avaśiṣṭaṁ) - remaining; तत् (tat) - that; आचख्यौ (ācakhyau) - he informed; कार्यम् (kāryam) - the task; अस्य (asya) - his; हि (hi) - indeed;]
But Gālava, having heard the words spoken by the son of Vinatā, informed him of the remaining one-fourth of his task. (5-117-2)
सुपर्णस्त्वब्रवीदेनं गालवं पततां वरः। प्रयत्नस्ते न कर्तव्यो नैष सम्पत्स्यते तव ॥५-११७-३॥
suparṇastvabravīdēnaṁ gālavaṁ patatāṁ varaḥ। prayatnastē na kartavyō naiṣa sampatsyatē tava ॥5-117-3॥
[सुपर्णः (suparṇaḥ) - Suparna; त्व् (tv) - but; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; एनम् (ēnam) - to him; गालवम् (gālavam) - to Galava; पततां वरः (patatāṁ varaḥ) - the foremost of the winged; प्रयत्नः (prayatnaḥ) - effort; ते (tē) - your; न कर्तव्यः (na kartavyaḥ) - should not be made; न (na) - not; एषः (ēṣaḥ) - this; सम्पत्स्यते (sampatsyatē) - will succeed; तव (tava) - for you;]
But Suparna, the foremost of those who fly, said to Galava, "You should not make this effort; it will not succeed for you." (5-117-3)
पुरा हि कन्यकुब्जे वै गाधेः सत्यवतीं सुताम्। भार्यार्थेऽवरयत्कन्यामृचीकस्तेन भाषितः ॥५-११७-४॥
purā hi kanyakubjē vai gādhēḥ satyavatīṁ sutām। bhāryārthē’varayatkanyāmr̥cīkastēna bhāṣitaḥ ॥5-117-4॥
[पुरा (purā) - long ago; हि (hi) - indeed; कन्यकुब्जे (kanyakubjē) - in Kanyakubja; वै (vai) - truly; गाधेः (gādhēḥ) - of Gadhi; सत्यवतीं (satyavatīṁ) - Satyavati; सुताम् (sutām) - daughter; भार्याअर्थे (bhāryāarthē) - for the sake of a wife; अवरयत् (avarayat) - asked for (in marriage); कन्याम् (kanyām) - the girl; ऋचीकः (r̥cīkaḥ) - R̥cīka; तेन (tēna) - by him; भाषितः (bhāṣitaḥ) - was spoken to;]
Long ago, in Kanyakubja, R̥cīka asked for Gadhi's daughter Satyavati in marriage, and was addressed by him. (5-117-4)
एकतःश्यामकर्णानां हयानां चन्द्रवर्चसाम्। भगवन्दीयतां मह्यं सहस्रमिति गालव ॥५-११७-५॥
ēkataḥśyāmakarṇānāṁ hayānāṁ candravarcasām। bhagavandīyatāṁ mahyaṁ sahasramiti gālava ॥5-117-5॥
[एकतः (ēkataḥ) - on one side; श्यामकर्णानाम् (śyāmakarṇānām) - dark-eared; हयानाम् (hayānām) - horses; चन्द्रवर्चसाम् (candravarcasām) - radiant as the moon; भगवन् (bhagavan) - O venerable one; दीयताम् (dīyatām) - let there be given; महि्यम् (mahiyam) - to me; सहस्रम् (sahasram) - a thousand; इति (iti) - thus; गालव (gālava) - O Gālava;]
O Gālava, let a thousand horses with dark ears and radiant like the moon be given to me on one side, O venerable one. (5-117-5)
ऋचीकस्तु तथेत्युक्त्वा वरुणस्यालयं गतः। अश्वतीर्थे हयाँल्लब्ध्वा दत्तवान्पार्थिवाय वै ॥५-११७-६॥
r̥cīkastu tathētyuktvā varuṇasyālayaṁ gataḥ। aśvatīrthē hayām̐llabdhvā dattavānpārthivāya vai ॥5-117-6॥
[ऋचीकः (r̥cīkaḥ) - Ṛcīka; तु (tu) - but; तथेत्य् उक्त्वा (tathēty uktvā) - having said 'so be it'; वरुणस्य (varuṇasya) - of Varuṇa; आलयम् (ālayam) - abode; गतः (gataḥ) - went; अश्वतीर्थे (aśvatīrthē) - at Aśvatīrtha; हयान् (hayān) - horses; लब्ध्वा (labdhvā) - having obtained; दत्तवान् (dattavān) - gave; पार्थिवाय (pārthivāya) - to the king; वै (vai) - indeed;]
But Ṛcīka, having said 'so be it,' went to the abode of Varuṇa. Having obtained horses at Aśvatīrtha, he gave them to the king. (5-117-6)
इष्ट्वा ते पुण्डरीकेण दत्ता राज्ञा द्विजातिषु। तेभ्यो द्वे द्वे शते क्रीत्वा प्राप्तास्ते पार्थिवैस्तदा ॥५-११७-७॥
iṣṭvā tē puṇḍarīkēṇa dattā rājñā dvijātiṣu। tēbhyō dvē dvē śatē krītvā prāptāstē pārthivaistadā ॥5-117-7॥
[इष्ट्वा (iṣṭvā) - having performed a sacrifice; ते (tē) - those; पुण्डरीकेण (puṇḍarīkēṇa) - with the white horse; दत्ता (dattā) - given; राज्ञा (rājñā) - by the king; द्विजातिषु (dvijātiṣu) - unto the twice-born; तेभ्यः (tēbhyaḥ) - from them; द्वे द्वे शते (dvē dvē śatē) - two hundred each; क्रीत्वा (krītvā) - having obtained; प्राप्ताः (prāptāḥ) - were acquired; ते (tē) - they; पार्थिवैः (pārthivaiḥ) - by the kings; तदा (tadā) - then;]
Having performed a sacrifice with the white horse and given it by the king to the twice-born, two hundred each were obtained from them and then acquired by those kings. (5-117-7)
अपराण्यपि चत्वारि शतानि द्विजसत्तम। नीयमानानि सन्तारे हृतान्यासन्वितस्तया । एवं न शक्यमप्राप्यं प्राप्तुं गालव कर्हिचित् ॥५-११७-८॥
aparāṇyapi catvāri śatāni dvijasattama। nīyamānāni santārē hr̥tānyāsanvitastayā । ēvaṁ na śakyamaprāpyaṁ prāptuṁ gālava karhicit ॥5-117-8॥
[अपराणि अपि (aparāṇi api) - another; चत्वारि शतानि (catvāri śatāni) - four hundred; द्विजसत्तम (dvijasattama) - best of the twice-born; नीयमानानि (nīyamānāni) - being led away; सन्तारे (santārē) - in the process of transfer; हृतानि आ सन् वितस्तया (hr̥tāni ā san vitastayā) - were taken away with only a span's distance; एवम् (ēvam) - thus; न शक्यम् (na śakyam) - it is not possible; अप्राप्यम् (aprāpyam) - the unachievable; प्राप्तुम् (prāptum) - to obtain; गालव (gālava) - O Gālava; कर्हिचित् (karhicit) - ever;]
O best of the twice-born, another four hundred horses, led away for the transfer, were taken with only a span's distance between them. Thus, O Gālava, it is never possible to obtain the unattainable. (5-117-8)
इमामश्वशताभ्यां वै द्वाभ्यां तस्मै निवेदय। विश्वामित्राय धर्मात्मन्षड्भिरश्वशतैः सह ॥५-११७-९॥
imāmaśvaśatābhyāṁ vai dvābhyāṁ tasmai nivēdaya। viśvāmitrāya dharmātmanṣaḍbhiraśvaśataiḥ saha ॥5-117-9॥
[इमाम् (imām) - this one; अश्वशताभ्यां (aśvaśatābhyāṁ) - with two hundred horses; वै (vai) - indeed; द्वाभ्यां (dvābhyāṁ) - two; तस्मै (tasmai) - to him; निवेदय (nivēdaya) - offer; विश्वामित्राय (viśvāmitrāya) - to Viśvāmitra; धर्मात्मन् (dharmātman) - O righteous one; षड्भिः अश्वशतैः सह (ṣaḍbhiḥ aśvaśataiḥ saha) - along with six hundred horses;]
Indeed, offer this one with two hundred horses and the other two to him—O righteous one—to Viśvāmitra, along with six hundred horses. (5-117-9)
ततोऽसि गतसंमोहः कृतकृत्यो द्विजर्षभ ॥५-११७-९॥
tatō’si gatasaṁmōhaḥ kr̥takr̥tyō dvijarṣabha ॥5-117-9॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; असि (asi) - you are; गतसंमोहः (gatasaṁmōhaḥ) - freed from delusion; कृतकृत्यः (kr̥takr̥tyaḥ) - one who has accomplished the task; द्विजर्षभ (dvijarṣabha) - O best of the twice-born;]
Then you are freed from delusion and have accomplished your task, O best of the twice-born. (5-117-9)
गालवस्तं तथेत्युक्त्वा सुपर्णसहितस्ततः। आदायाश्वांश्च कन्यां च विश्वामित्रमुपागमत् ॥५-११७-१०॥
gālavastaṁ tathētyuktvā suparṇasahitastataḥ। ādāyāśvāṁśca kanyāṁ ca viśvāmitramupāgamat ॥5-117-10॥
[गालवः (gālavaḥ) - Gālava; तं (taṁ) - to him; तथेत्य् (tathēty) - so be it; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having said; सुपर्ण-सहितः (suparṇa-sahitaḥ) - together with Suparṇa; ततः (tataḥ) - then; आदाय (ādāya) - taking; अश्वान् (aśvān) - the horses; च (ca) - and; कन्यां (kanyāṁ) - the maiden; च (ca) - and; विश्वामित्रम् (viśvāmitram) - to Viśvāmitra; उपागमत् (upāgamat) - approached;]
Gālava replied, “So be it,” and, together with Suparṇa, then took the horses and the maiden and went to Viśvāmitra. (5-117-10)
गालव उवाच॥
gālava uvāca॥
[गालवः (gālavaḥ) - Gālava; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
Gālava said:
अश्वानां काङ्क्षितार्थानां षडिमानि शतानि वै। शतद्वयेन कन्येयं भवता प्रतिगृह्यताम् ॥५-११७-११॥
aśvānāṁ kāṅkṣitārthānāṁ ṣaḍimāni śatāni vai। śatadvayēna kanyēyaṁ bhavatā pratigr̥hyatām ॥5-117-11॥
[अश्वानाम् (aśvānām) - horses; काङ्क्षितार्थानाम् (kāṅkṣitārthānām) - of the desired qualities; षट् इमानि शतानि (ṣaṭ imāni śatāni) - these six hundred; वै (vai) - indeed; शतद्वयेन (śatadvayēna) - with two hundred; कन्या इयम् (kanyā iyam) - this maiden; भवता (bhavatā) - by you; प्रतिगृह्यताम् (pratigr̥hyatām) - let her be accepted;]
Here are six hundred horses of the desired qualities; let this maiden be accepted by you for two hundred of them. (5-117-11)
अस्यां राजर्षिभिः पुत्रा जाता वै धार्मिकास्त्रयः। चतुर्थं जनयत्वेकं भवानपि नरोत्तम ॥५-११७-१२॥
asyāṁ rājarṣibhiḥ putrā jātā vai dhārmikāstrayaḥ। caturthaṁ janayatvēkaṁ bhavānapi narōttama ॥5-117-12॥
[अस्याम् (asyām) - from her; राजर्षिभिः (rājarṣibhiḥ) - by royal sages; पुत्राः (putrāḥ) - sons; जाताः (jātāḥ) - have been born; वै (vai) - indeed; धार्मिकाः (dhārmikāḥ) - virtuous; त्रयः (trayaḥ) - three; चतुर्थं (caturthaṁ) - a fourth; जनयतु (janayatu) - should sire; एकं (ēkaṁ) - one; भवान् (bhavān) - you; अपि (api) - also; नरोत्तम (narōttama) - best of men;]
From her, three virtuous sons have been born by royal sages; you too, best of men, should beget a fourth. (5-117-12)
पूर्णान्येवं शतान्यष्टौ तुरगाणां भवन्तु ते। भवतो ह्यनृणो भूत्वा तपः कुर्यां यथासुखम् ॥५-११७-१३॥
pūrṇānyēvaṁ śatānyaṣṭau turagāṇāṁ bhavantu tē। bhavatō hyanr̥ṇō bhūtvā tapaḥ kuryāṁ yathāsukham ॥5-117-13॥
[पूर्णानि (pūrṇāni) - full; एवम् (ēvam) - thus; शतानि (śatāni) - hundreds; अष्टौ (aṣṭau) - eight; तुरगाणाम् (turagāṇām) - of horses; भवन्तु (bhavantu) - may there be; ते (tē) - for you; भवत: (bhavata:) - of you; हि (hi) - indeed; अनृण: (anr̥ṇa:) - free of debt; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; तप: (tapa:) - austerity; कुर्याम् (kuryām) - may I perform; यथासुखम् (yathāsukham) - in comfort;]
May there be for you eight hundred full (herds) of horses; for, having made you free of debts, may I perform austerities in comfort. (5-117-13)

Nārada said:
विश्वामित्रस्तु तं दृष्ट्वा गालवं सह पक्षिणा। कन्यां च तां वरारोहामिदमित्यब्रवीद्वचः ॥५-११७-१४॥
viśvāmitrastu taṁ dr̥ṣṭvā gālavaṁ saha pakṣiṇā। kanyāṁ ca tāṁ varārōhāmidamityabravīdvacaḥ ॥5-117-14॥
[विश्वामित्रः (viśvāmitraḥ) - Viśvāmitra; तु (tu) - but; तम् (tam) - him; दृष्ट्वा (dr̥ṣṭvā) - having seen; गालवम् (gālavam) - Gālava; सह पक्षिणा (saha pakṣiṇā) - together with the bird; कन्यां च तां (kanyāṁ ca tāṁ) - and that maiden; वरारोहाम् (varārōhām) - of excellent form; इदम् इति अब्रवीत् वचः (idam iti abravīt vacaḥ) - spoke these words;]
But Viśvāmitra, seeing Gālava together with the bird and that maiden of excellent form, spoke these words: (5-117-14)
किमियं पूर्वमेवेह न दत्ता मम गालव। पुत्रा ममैव चत्वारो भवेयुः कुलभावनाः ॥५-११७-१५॥
kimiyaṁ pūrvamēvēha na dattā mama gālava। putrā mamaiva catvārō bhavēyuḥ kulabhāvanāḥ ॥5-117-15॥
[किम् (kim) - why; इयम् (iyam) - this girl; पूर्वम् एव (pūrvam ēva) - earlier; इह (iha) - here; न (na) - not; दत्ता (dattā) - given; मम (mama) - to me; गालव (gālava) - Gālava; पुत्राः (putrāḥ) - sons; मम एव (mama ēva) - of mine only; चत्वारः (catvāraḥ) - four; भवेयुः (bhavēyuḥ) - might be; कुलभावनाः (kulabhāvanāḥ) - upholders of the lineage;]
Gālava, why was this girl not given to me here earlier? Four sons born of me would have become upholders of my lineage. (5-117-15)
प्रतिगृह्णामि ते कन्यामेकपुत्रफलाय वै। अश्वाश्चाश्रममासाद्य तिष्ठन्तु मम सर्वशः ॥५-११७-१६॥
pratigr̥hṇāmi tē kanyāmēkaputraphalāya vai। aśvāścāśramamāsādya tiṣṭhantu mama sarvaśaḥ ॥5-117-16॥
[प्रतिगृह्णामि (pratigr̥hṇāmi) - I accept; ते (tē) - your; कन्याम् (kanyām) - daughter; एकपुत्रफलाय (ēkaputraphalāya) - for the sake of one son; वै (vai) - truly; अश्वाः (aśvāḥ) - the horses; च (ca) - and; आश्रमम् (āśramam) - the hermitage; आसाद्य (āsādya) - having reached; तिष्ठन्तु (tiṣṭhantu) - let them remain; मम (mama) - my; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - entirely;]
I accept your daughter, but only for the sake of one son. As for the horses, let them all remain in my hermitage. (5-117-16)
स तया रममाणोऽथ विश्वामित्रो महाद्युतिः। आत्मजं जनयामास माधवीपुत्रमष्टकम् ॥५-११७-१७॥
sa tayā ramamāṇō’tha viśvāmitrō mahādyutiḥ। ātmajaṁ janayāmāsa mādhavīputramaṣṭakam ॥5-117-17॥
[स (sa) - he; तया (tayā) - with her; रममाणः (ramamāṇaḥ) - enjoying union; अथ (atha) - then; विश्वामित्रः (viśvāmitraḥ) - Viśvāmitra; महाद्युतिः (mahādyutiḥ) - the illustrious; आत्मजं (ātmajaṁ) - his own son; जनयामास (janayāmāsa) - produced; माधवीपुत्रम् (mādhavīputram) - the son of Mādhavī; अष्टकम् (aṣṭakam) - Aṣṭaka;]
Then, the illustrious Viśvāmitra, enjoying union with her, fathered a son by Mādhavī, Aṣṭaka. (5-117-17)
जातमात्रं सुतं तं च विश्वामित्रो महाद्युतिः। संयोज्यार्थैस्तथा धर्मैरश्वैस्तैः समयोजयत् ॥५-११७-१८॥
jātamātraṁ sutaṁ taṁ ca viśvāmitrō mahādyutiḥ। saṁyōjyārthaistathā dharmairaśvaistaiḥ samayōjayat ॥5-117-18॥
[जातमात्रं (jātamātraṁ) - as soon as he was born; सुतं (sutaṁ) - the son; तं (taṁ) - him; च (ca) - and; विश्वामित्रः (viśvāmitraḥ) - Viśvāmitra; महा-द्युतिः (mahā-dyutiḥ) - the glorious; संयोज्य (saṁyōjya) - having provided; अर्थैः (arthaiḥ) - with resources; तथा (tathā) - as well as; धर्मैः (dharmaiḥ) - with rites; अश्वैः (aśvaiḥ) - with horses; तैः (taiḥ) - with those; सम-योजयत् (sama-yōjayat) - united him;]
As soon as his son was born, that glorious Viśvāmitra united him with those resources, rites, and also horses. (5-117-18)
अथाष्टकः पुरं प्रायात्तदा सोमपुरप्रभम्। निर्यात्य कन्यां शिष्याय कौशिकोऽपि वनं ययौ ॥५-११७-१९॥
athāṣṭakaḥ puraṁ prāyāttadā sōmapuraprabham। niryātya kanyāṁ śiṣyāya kauśikō’pi vanaṁ yayau ॥5-117-19॥
[अथ (atha) - then; आष्टकः (āṣṭakaḥ) - Aṣṭaka; पुरं (puraṁ) - to the city; प्रायात् (prāyāt) - departed; तदा (tadā) - then; सोमपुरप्रभम् (sōmapuraprabham) - radiant like Soma's city; निर्यात्य (niryātya) - having handed over; कन्यां (kanyāṁ) - the maiden; शिष्याय (śiṣyāya) - to the disciple; कौशिकः अपि (kauśikaḥ api) - and Kauśika; वनं (vanaṁ) - to the forest; ययौ (yayau) - went;]
Then Aṣṭaka departed for the city, radiant like Soma's city, and Kauśika, having handed over the maiden to his disciple, went to the forest. (5-117-19)
गालवोऽपि सुपर्णेन सह निर्यात्य दक्षिणाम्। मनसाभिप्रतीतेन कन्यामिदमुवाच ह ॥५-११७-२०॥
gālavō’pi suparṇēna saha niryātya dakṣiṇām। manasābhipratītēna kanyāmidamuvāca ha ॥5-117-20॥
[गालवः अपि (gālavaḥ api) - Gālava too; सुपर्णेन सह (suparṇēna saha) - together with Suparṇa; निर्यात्य दक्षिणाम् (niryātya dakṣiṇām) - having received the southern daughter; मनसा अभिप्रतीतेन (manasā abhipratītēna) - with a mind filled with joy; कन्याम् इदम् उवाच ह (kanyām idam uvāca ha) - said this to the girl;]
Gālava, together with Suparṇa, having received the southern daughter and with a heart full of joy, spoke these words to the girl. (5-117-20)
जातो दानपतिः पुत्रस्त्वया शूरस्तथापरः। सत्यधर्मरतश्चान्यो यज्वा चापि तथापरः ॥५-११७-२१॥
jātō dānapatiḥ putrastvayā śūrastathāparaḥ। satyadharmarataścānyō yajvā cāpi tathāparaḥ ॥5-117-21॥
[जातः (jātaḥ) - has been born; दानपतिः (dānapatiḥ) - a lord of generosity; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - a son; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; शूरः (śūraḥ) - a hero; तथा (tathā) - likewise; परः (paraḥ) - another; सत्यधर्मरतः (satyadharmarataḥ) - devoted to truth and righteousness; च (ca) - and; अन्यः (anyaḥ) - another; यज्वा (yajvā) - a performer of sacrifices; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; तथा (tathā) - likewise; परः (paraḥ) - another;]
Born from you was a son who is a lord of generosity; likewise another, a hero; another devoted to truth and righteousness; and yet another, a performer of sacrifices. (5-117-21)
तदागच्छ वरारोहे तारितस्ते पिता सुतैः। चत्वारश्चैव राजानस्तथाहं च सुमध्यमे ॥५-११७-२२॥
tadāgaccha varārōhē tāritastē pitā sutaiḥ। catvāraścaiva rājānastathāhaṁ ca sumadhyamē ॥5-117-22॥
[तदा (tadā) - then; आगच्छ (āgaccha) - come; वरारोहे (varārōhē) - O beautiful-waisted one; तातिरितः (tātiritaḥ) - rescued; ते (tē) - your; पिता (pitā) - father; सुतैः (sutaiḥ) - by his sons; चत्वारः (catvāraḥ) - four; च (ca) - and; एव (ēva) - indeed; राजानः (rājānaḥ) - kings; तथा (tathā) - as well; अहम् (aham) - I; च (ca) - and; सुमध्यमे (sumadhyamē) - O graceful lady;]
Therefore, come, O beautiful-waisted one. Your father has been rescued by his four sons—who are also kings—and by me as well, O graceful lady. (5-117-22)
गालवस्त्वभ्यनुज्ञाय सुपर्णं पन्नगाशनम्। पितुर्निर्यात्य तां कन्यां प्रययौ वनमेव ह ॥५-११७-२३॥
gālavastvabhyanujñāya suparṇaṁ pannagāśanam। piturniryātya tāṁ kanyāṁ prayayau vanamēva ha ॥5-117-23॥
[गालवः (gālavaḥ) - Gālava; तु (tu) - but; अभ्यनुज्ञाय (abhyanujñāya) - having given permission to; सुपर्णम् (suparṇam) - to Suparṇa; पन्नगाशनम् (pannagāśanam) - the eater of serpents; पितुः (pituḥ) - from the father; निर्व्यात्य (nirvyātya) - having delivered; तां कन्यां (tāṁ kanyāṁ) - that maiden; प्रययौ (prayayau) - departed; वनम् एव (vanam ēva) - to the forest; ह (ha) - indeed;]
But Gālava, having given permission to Suparṇa, the eater of serpents, and having delivered that maiden from her father, indeed departed to the forest. (5-117-23)
