[विदुरः (viduraḥ) - Vidura; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]

Vidura spoke:
अथैतस्यामवस्थायां पौरुषं हातुमिच्छसि । निहीनसेवितं मार्गं गमिष्यस्यचिरादिव ॥५-१३२-१॥
athaitasyāmavasthāyāṃ pauruṣaṃ hātumicchasi । nihīnasevitaṃ mārgaṃ gamiṣyasyacirādiva ॥5-132-1॥
[अथ (atha) - then; एतस्याम् (etasyām) - this; अवस्थायाम् (avasthāyām) - state; पौरुषम् (pauruṣam) - manliness; हातुम् (hātum) - to abandon; इच्छसि (icchasi) - you wish; निहीनसेवितम् (nihīnasevitam) - followed by the lowly; मार्गम् (mārgam) - path; गमिष्यसि (gamiṣyasi) - you will go; अचिरात् (acirāt) - soon; इव (iva) - like;]
(Then, in this state, you wish to abandon manliness. You will soon go the path followed by the lowly, like.)
Then, in this state, if you wish to abandon your manliness, you will soon follow the path taken by the lowly.
यो हि तेजो यथाशक्ति न दर्शयति विक्रमात् । क्षत्रियो जीविताकाङ्क्षी स्तेन इत्येव तं विदुः ॥५-१३२-२॥
yo hi tejo yathāśakti na darśayati vikramāt । kṣatriyo jīvitakāṅkṣī stena ityeva taṃ viduḥ ॥5-132-2॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; हि (hi) - indeed; तेजः (tejaḥ) - strength; यथाशक्ति (yathāśakti) - according to ability; न (na) - not; दर्शयति (darśayati) - shows; विक्रमात् (vikramāt) - from valor; क्षत्रियः (kṣatriyaḥ) - a warrior; जीविताकाङ्क्षी (jīvitakāṅkṣī) - desirous of life; स्तेनः (stenaḥ) - a thief; इति (iti) - thus; एव (eva) - indeed; तम् (tam) - him; विदुः (viduḥ) - they know;]
(Who indeed does not show strength according to ability from valor, a warrior desirous of life, they know him as a thief thus indeed.)
A warrior who does not display his strength according to his ability and valor, and is desirous of life, is indeed known as a thief.
अर्थवन्त्युपपन्नानि वाक्यानि गुणवन्ति च । नैव सम्प्राप्नुवन्ति त्वां मुमूर्षुमिव भेषजम् ॥५-१३२-३॥
arthavantyupapannāni vākyāni guṇavanti ca । naiva samprāpnuvanti tvāṃ mumūrṣumiva bheṣajam ॥5-132-3॥
[अर्थवन्ति (arthavanti) - meaningful; उपपन्नानि (upapannāni) - appropriate; वाक्यानि (vākyāni) - statements; गुणवन्ति (guṇavanti) - virtuous; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; एव (eva) - indeed; सम्प्राप्नुवन्ति (samprāpnuvanti) - reach; त्वां (tvāṃ) - you; मुमूर्षुम् (mumūrṣum) - dying; इव (iva) - like; भेषजम् (bheṣajam) - medicine;]
(Meaningful, appropriate statements and virtuous do not indeed reach you, like medicine to a dying person.)
Meaningful and appropriate statements, even if virtuous, do not reach you, just as medicine does not reach a dying person.
सन्ति वै सिन्धुराजस्य सन्तुष्टा बहवो जनाः । दौर्बल्यादासते मूढा व्यसनौघप्रतीक्षिणः ॥५-१३२-४॥
santi vai sindhurājasya santuṣṭā bahavo janāḥ । daurbalyādāsate mūḍhā vyasanaughapratīkṣiṇaḥ ॥5-132-4॥
[सन्ति (santi) - are; वै (vai) - indeed; सिन्धुराजस्य (sindhurājasya) - of Sindhuraja; सन्तुष्टा (santuṣṭā) - satisfied; बहवः (bahavaḥ) - many; जनाः (janāḥ) - people; दौर्बल्यात् (daurbalyāt) - due to weakness; आसते (āsate) - sit; मूढाः (mūḍhāḥ) - fools; व्यसनौघ (vyasanaugha) - of misfortunes; प्रतीक्षिणः (pratīkṣiṇaḥ) - awaiting;]
(There are indeed many satisfied people of Sindhuraja. Due to weakness, fools sit awaiting misfortunes.)
There are indeed many people satisfied with Sindhuraja. However, due to weakness, fools sit idly, awaiting a multitude of misfortunes.
सहायोपचयं कृत्वा व्यवसाय्य ततस्ततः । अनुदुष्येयुरपरे पश्यन्तस्तव पौरुषम् ॥५-१३२-५॥
sahāyopacayaṃ kṛtvā vyavasāya tataḥ tataḥ । anuduṣyeyurapare paśyantas tava pauruṣam ॥5-132-5॥
[सहायोपचयं (sahāyopacayaṃ) - accumulation of allies; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; व्यवसाय्य (vyavasāya) - endeavoring; ततः (tataḥ) - then; ततः (tataḥ) - then; अनुदुष्येयुः (anuduṣyeyuḥ) - would not be envious; अपरे (apare) - others; पश्यन्तः (paśyantaḥ) - seeing; तव (tava) - your; पौरुषम् (pauruṣam) - valor;]
(Having accumulated allies and endeavoring then and then, others would not be envious seeing your valor.)
After gathering allies and making efforts repeatedly, others would not envy you upon seeing your valor.
तैः कृत्वा सह सङ्घातं गिरिदुर्गालयांश्चर । काले व्यसनमाकाङ्क्षन्नैवायमजरामरः ॥५-१३२-६॥
taiḥ kṛtvā saha saṅghātaṃ giridurgālayāṃścara । kāle vyasanamākāṅkṣannaivāyamajarāmaraḥ ॥5-132-6॥
[तैः (taiḥ) - by them; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; सह (saha) - with; सङ्घातम् (saṅghātam) - a group; गिरिदुर्गालयान् (giridurgālayān) - mountain fortresses; चर (cara) - move; काले (kāle) - in time; व्यसनम् (vyasanam) - disaster; आकाङ्क्षन् (ākāṅkṣan) - desiring; न (na) - not; एव (eva) - indeed; अयम् (ayam) - this; अजरामरः (ajarāmaraḥ) - immortal;]
(By them, having made a group with mountain fortresses, move. In time, desiring disaster, not indeed this immortal.)
By forming alliances with mountain fortresses, they move, desiring disaster in time, yet this one is not immortal.
सञ्जयो नामतश्च त्वं न च पश्यामि तत्त्वयि । अन्वर्थनामा भव मे पुत्र मा व्यर्थनामकः ॥५-१३२-७॥
sañjayo nāmataśca tvaṃ na ca paśyāmi tattvayi । anvarthanāmā bhava me putra mā vyarthanāmakaḥ ॥5-132-7॥
[सञ्जयः (sañjayaḥ) - Sanjaya; नामतः (nāmataḥ) - by name; च (ca) - and; त्वम् (tvam) - you; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; पश्यामि (paśyāmi) - see; तत्त्वयि (tattvayi) - in reality; अन्वर्थनामः (anvarthanāmaḥ) - true to your name; भव (bhava) - be; मे (me) - my; पुत्र (putra) - son; मा (mā) - do not; व्यर्थनामकः (vyarthanāmakaḥ) - false to your name;]
(Sanjaya, by name, and you, I do not see in reality. Be true to your name, my son, do not be false to your name.)
Sanjaya, you are known by name, but I do not see that in reality. My son, be true to your name and do not be one who is falsely named.
सम्यग्दृष्टिर्महाप्राज्ञो बालं त्वां ब्राह्मणोऽब्रवीत् । अयं प्राप्य महत्कृच्छ्रं पुनर्वृद्धिं गमिष्यति ॥५-१३२-८॥
samyagdṛṣṭirmahāprājño bālaṃ tvāṃ brāhmaṇo'bravīt . ayaṃ prāpya mahatkṛcchraṃ punarvṛddhiṃ gamiṣyati ॥5-132-8॥
[सम्यग्दृष्टिः (samyagdṛṣṭiḥ) - right view; महाप्राज्ञः (mahāprājñaḥ) - great wisdom; बालम् (bālam) - child; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - Brahmin; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; अयम् (ayam) - this; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having obtained; महत्कृच्छ्रम् (mahatkṛcchram) - great difficulty; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; वृद्धिम् (vṛddhim) - growth; गमिष्यति (gamiṣyati) - will attain;]
(The Brahmin with great wisdom said to you, the child, "This one, having obtained great difficulty, will again attain growth.")
The wise Brahmin told you, the child, that after facing great difficulties, this person will grow again.
तस्य स्मरन्ती वचनमाशंसे विजयं तव । तस्मात्तात ब्रवीमि त्वां वक्ष्यामि च पुनः पुनः ॥५-१३२-९॥
tasya smarantī vacanam āśaṁse vijayaṁ tava । tasmāttāta bravīmi tvāṁ vakṣyāmi ca punaḥ punaḥ ॥5-132-9॥
[तस्य (tasya) - his; स्मरन्ती (smarantī) - remembering; वचनम् (vacanam) - words; आशंसे (āśaṁse) - hope; विजयम् (vijayam) - victory; तव (tava) - your; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; तात (tāta) - dear; ब्रवीमि (bravīmi) - I say; त्वाम् (tvām) - to you; वक्ष्यामि (vakṣyāmi) - I will speak; च (ca) - and; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; पुनः (punaḥ) - again;]
(Remembering his words, I hope for your victory. Therefore, dear, I say to you, I will speak again and again.)
Recalling his words, I am hopeful for your success. Hence, dear one, I tell you, I will continue to speak repeatedly.
यस्य ह्यर्थाभिनिर्वृत्तौ भवन्त्याप्यायिताः परे । तस्यार्थसिद्धिर्नियता नयेष्वर्थानुसारिणः ॥५-१३२-१०॥
yasya hyarthābhinirvṛttau bhavantyāpyāyitāḥ pare । tasyārthasiddhirniyatā nayeṣvarthānusāriṇaḥ ॥5-132-10॥
[यस्य (yasya) - whose; हि (hi) - indeed; अर्थाभिनिर्वृत्तौ (arthābhinirvṛttau) - in the accomplishment of purpose; भवन्ति (bhavanti) - become; आप्यायिताः (āpyāyitāḥ) - nourished; परे (pare) - others; तस्य (tasya) - his; अर्थसिद्धिः (arthasiddhiḥ) - success in purpose; नियता (niyatā) - is certain; नयेषु (nayeṣu) - in policies; अर्थानुसारिणः (arthānusāriṇaḥ) - aligned with purpose;]
(Indeed, whose purpose is accomplished, others become nourished; his success in purpose is certain in policies aligned with purpose.)
Indeed, when others are nourished in the accomplishment of one's purpose, success is assured in policies that align with that purpose.
समृद्धिरसमृद्धिर्वा पूर्वेषां मम सञ्जय । एवं विद्वान्युद्धमना भव मा प्रत्युपाहर ॥५-१३२-११॥
samṛddhirasamṛddhirvā pūrveṣāṃ mama sañjaya । evaṃ vidvānyuddhamanā bhava mā pratyupāhara ॥5-132-11॥
[समृद्धिः (samṛddhiḥ) - prosperity; असमृद्धिः (asamṛddhiḥ) - non-prosperity; वा (vā) - or; पूर्वेषाम् (pūrveṣām) - of the ancestors; मम (mama) - my; सञ्जय (sañjaya) - Sanjaya; एवम् (evam) - thus; विद्वान् (vidvān) - wise one; युद्धमना (yuddhamanā) - with a mind for battle; भव (bhava) - be; मा (mā) - do not; प्रत्युपाहर (pratyupāhara) - counteract;]
(Prosperity or non-prosperity of the ancestors, my Sanjaya, thus, wise one, with a mind for battle, be, do not counteract.)
O Sanjaya, whether there is prosperity or not from our ancestors, be wise and ready for battle, do not counteract.
नातः पापीयसीं काञ्चिदवस्थां शम्बरोऽब्रवीत् । यत्र नैवाद्य न प्रातर्भोजनं प्रतिदृश्यते ॥५-१३२-१२॥
nātaḥ pāpīyasīṃ kāñcidavasthāṃ śambaro'bravīt । yatra naivādya na prātarbhojanaṃ pratidṛśyate ॥5-132-12॥
[न (na) - not; अतः (ataḥ) - from this; पापीयसीं (pāpīyasīṃ) - worse; काञ्चित् (kāñcit) - any; अवस्थां (avasthāṃ) - condition; शम्बरः (śambaraḥ) - Śambara; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; यत्र (yatra) - where; न (na) - not; एव (eva) - indeed; अद्य (adya) - today; न (na) - not; प्रातर् (prātar) - in the morning; भोजनं (bhojanaṃ) - food; प्रतिदृश्यते (pratidṛśyate) - is seen;]
(Śambara said, "There is no worse condition than this, where neither today nor in the morning food is seen.")
Śambara lamented the dire situation, noting that there was no worse condition than the current one, where food was not available either today or in the morning.
पतिपुत्रवधादेतत्परमं दुःखमब्रवीत् । दारिद्र्यमिति यत्प्रोक्तं पर्यायमरणं हि तत् ॥५-१३२-१३॥
patiputravadhādetatparamaṃ duḥkhamabravīt । dāridryamiti yatproktaṃ paryāyamaraṇaṃ hi tat ॥5-132-13॥
[पतिपुत्रवधात् (patiputravadhāt) - from the killing of husband and son; एतत् (etat) - this; परमं (paramaṃ) - supreme; दुःखम् (duḥkham) - sorrow; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; दारिद्र्यम् (dāridryam) - poverty; इति (iti) - thus; यत् (yat) - which; प्रोक्तं (proktaṃ) - is said; पर्याय (paryāya) - synonym; मरणं (maraṇaṃ) - death; हि (hi) - indeed; तत् (tat) - that;]
(From the killing of husband and son, this supreme sorrow was said. Poverty, which is said to be a synonym, is indeed that death.)
The supreme sorrow from the killing of husband and son was expressed. It is said that poverty is indeed synonymous with death.
अहं महाकुले जाता ह्रदाद्ध्रदमिवागता । ईश्वरी सर्वकल्याणैर्भर्त्रा परमपूजिता ॥५-१३२-१४॥
ahaṁ mahākule jātā hradāddhradamivāgatā । īśvarī sarvakalyāṇairbhartrā paramapūjitā ॥5-132-14॥
[अहं (ahaṁ) - I; महाकुले (mahākule) - in a great family; जाता (jātā) - born; ह्रदात् (hradāt) - from the lake; ह्रदम् (hradam) - to the lake; इव (iva) - like; आगता (āgatā) - come; ईश्वरी (īśvarī) - goddess; सर्वकल्याणैः (sarvakalyāṇaiḥ) - with all auspiciousness; भर्त्रा (bhartrā) - by the husband; परमपूजिता (paramapūjitā) - greatly revered;]
(I, born in a great family, have come like from the lake to the lake. The goddess, greatly revered by the husband with all auspiciousness.)
I was born into a noble family and have transitioned seamlessly, like moving from one lake to another. As a goddess, I am greatly revered by my husband, who embodies all that is auspicious.
महार्हमाल्याभरणां सुमृष्टाम्बरवाससम् । पुरा दृष्ट्वा सुहृद्वर्गो मामपश्यत्सुदुर्गताम् ॥५-१३२-१५॥
mahārhamālyābharaṇāṃ sumṛṣṭāmbaravāsasam । purā dṛṣṭvā suhṛdvargo māmapaśyatsudurgatām ॥5-132-15॥
[महार्ह (mahārha) - very costly; माल्य (mālya) - garlands; आभरणां (ābharaṇāṃ) - ornaments; सुमृष्ट (sumṛṣṭa) - well-cleaned; अम्बर (ambara) - clothes; वाससम् (vāsasam) - attired; पुरा (purā) - formerly; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; सुहृद् (suhṛd) - friends; वर्गः (vargaḥ) - group; माम् (mām) - me; अपश्यत् (apaśyat) - saw; सुदुर्गताम् (sudurgatām) - in a very bad condition;]
(Having seen me formerly attired in very costly garlands and ornaments, and well-cleaned clothes, the group of friends saw me in a very bad condition.)
Once, when my friends saw me adorned with expensive garlands and ornaments, dressed in clean clothes, they later saw me in a very poor state.
यदा मां चैव भार्यां च द्रष्टासि भृशदुर्बले । न तदा जीवितेनार्थो भविता तव सञ्जय ॥५-१३२-१६॥
yadā māṃ caiva bhāryāṃ ca draṣṭāsi bhṛśadurbale । na tadā jīvitena artho bhavitā tava sañjaya ॥5-132-16॥
[यदा (yadā) - when; मां (māṃ) - me; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; भार्यां (bhāryāṃ) - wife; च (ca) - and; द्रष्टासि (draṣṭāsi) - you will see; भृशदुर्बले (bhṛśadurbale) - very weak; न (na) - not; तदा (tadā) - then; जीवितेन (jīvitena) - with life; अर्थः (arthaḥ) - purpose; भविता (bhavitā) - will be; तव (tava) - your; सञ्जय (sañjaya) - Sanjaya;]
(When you see me and my wife very weak, then there will be no purpose for your life, Sanjaya.)
When you see both me and my wife in a very weakened state, Sanjaya, you will find no purpose in life.
दासकर्मकरान्भृत्यानाचार्यर्त्विक्पुरोहितान् । अवृत्त्यास्मान्प्रजहतो दृष्ट्वा किं जीवितेन ते ॥५-१३२-१७॥
dāsakarmakarānbhṛtyānācāryartvikpurohitān । avṛttyāsmānprajahato dṛṣṭvā kiṃ jīvitena te ॥5-132-17॥
[दास (dāsa) - servants; कर्मकरान् (karmakarān) - laborers; भृत्यान् (bhṛtyān) - dependents; आचार्य (ācārya) - teachers; ऋत्विक् (ṛtvik) - priests; पुरोहितान् (purohitān) - family priests; अवृत्त्या (avṛttyā) - without livelihood; अस्मान् (asmān) - us; प्रजहतः (prajahataḥ) - abandoning; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - seeing; किं (kiṃ) - what; जीवितेन (jīvitena) - with life; ते (te) - your;]
(Seeing servants, laborers, dependents, teachers, priests, and family priests abandoning us without livelihood, what is your life?)
Seeing the servants, laborers, dependents, teachers, priests, and family priests abandoning us without any means of livelihood, what is the point of your life?
यदि कृत्यं न पश्यामि तवाद्येह यथा पुरा । श्लाघनीयं यशस्यं च का शान्तिर्हृदयस्य मे ॥५-१३२-१८॥
yadi kṛtyaṃ na paśyāmi tavādyeha yathā purā । ślāghanīyaṃ yaśasyaṃ ca kā śāntirhṛdayasya me ॥5-132-18॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; कृत्यं (kṛtyaṃ) - duty; न (na) - not; पश्यामि (paśyāmi) - I see; तव (tava) - your; अद्य (adya) - today; इह (iha) - here; यथा (yathā) - as; पुरा (purā) - before; श्लाघनीयं (ślāghanīyaṃ) - praiseworthy; यशस्यं (yaśasyaṃ) - glorious; च (ca) - and; का (kā) - what; शान्तिः (śāntiḥ) - peace; हृदयस्य (hṛdayasya) - of heart; मे (me) - my;]
(If I do not see your duty here today as before, what praiseworthy glory and peace of heart is mine?)
If I do not see your duty here today as it was before, what praiseworthy glory and peace of heart can I have?
नेति चेद्ब्राह्मणान्ब्रूयां दीर्यते हृदयं मम । न ह्यहं न च मे भर्ता नेति ब्राह्मणमुक्तवान् ॥५-१३२-१९॥
neti ced brāhmaṇān brūyāṃ dīryate hṛdayaṃ mama । na hy ahaṃ na ca me bhartā neti brāhmaṇam uktavān ॥5-132-19॥
[नेति (neti) - thus not; चेत् (cet) - if; ब्राह्मणान् (brāhmaṇān) - to the Brahmins; ब्रूयाम् (brūyām) - I would say; दीर्यते (dīryate) - is torn; हृदयं (hṛdayam) - heart; मम (mama) - my; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; अहम् (aham) - I; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; मे (me) - my; भर्ता (bhartā) - husband; नेति (neti) - thus not; ब्राह्मणम् (brāhmaṇam) - to the Brahmin; उक्तवान् (uktavān) - said; ॥५-१३२-१९॥ (॥5-132-19॥) - (verse number);]
(If I were to say to the Brahmins, "Thus not," my heart is torn. Indeed, I am not, and my husband is not, thus said to the Brahmin.)
If I were to tell the Brahmins, "No, it is not so," it would break my heart. Indeed, neither I nor my husband said this to the Brahmin.
वयमाश्रयणीयाः स्म नाश्रितारः परस्य च । सान्यानाश्रित्य जीवन्ती परित्यक्ष्यामि जीवितम् ॥५-१३२-२०॥
vayam āśrayaṇīyāḥ sma nāśritāraḥ parasya ca । sānyān āśritya jīvantī parityakṣyāmi jīvitam ॥5-132-20॥
[वयम् (vayam) - we; आश्रयणीयाः (āśrayaṇīyāḥ) - to be dependent; स्म (sma) - were; न (na) - not; आश्रितारः (āśritāraḥ) - dependent; परस्य (parasya) - of another; च (ca) - and; सान्यान् (sānyān) - others; आश्रित्य (āśritya) - depending; जीवन्ती (jīvantī) - living; परित्यक्ष्यामि (parityakṣyāmi) - I will abandon; जीवितम् (jīvitam) - life;]
(We were to be dependent, not dependent on another; depending on others living, I will abandon life.)
We were meant to rely on ourselves, not be dependent on others. Depending on others for living, I will abandon life.
अपारे भव नः पारमप्लवे भव नः प्लवः । कुरुष्व स्थानमस्थाने मृतान्सञ्जीवयस्व नः ॥५-१३२-२१॥
apāre bhava naḥ pāramaplave bhava naḥ plavaḥ । kuruṣva sthānamasthāne mṛtānsañjīvayasva naḥ ॥5-132-21॥
[अपारे (apāre) - in the boundless; भव (bhava) - be; नः (naḥ) - our; पारमप्लवे (pāramaplave) - in the shoreless boat; भव (bhava) - be; नः (naḥ) - our; प्लवः (plavaḥ) - boat; कुरुष्व (kuruṣva) - make; स्थानमस्थाने (sthānamasthāne) - place in the placeless; मृतान् (mṛtān) - the dead; सञ्जीवयस्व (sañjīvayasva) - revive; नः (naḥ) - our;]
(In the boundless, be our shoreless boat; make a place in the placeless, revive our dead.)
Be our boundless boat in the shoreless sea; create a place where there is none, and bring our dead back to life.
सर्वे ते शत्रवः सह्या न चेज्जीवितुमिच्छसि । अथ चेदीदृशीं वृत्तिं क्लीबामभ्युपपद्यसे ॥५-१३२-२२॥
sarve te śatravaḥ sahyā na cejjīvitumicchasi । atha cedīdṛśīṃ vṛttiṃ klībāmabhyupapadyase ॥5-132-22॥
[सर्वे (sarve) - all; ते (te) - those; शत्रवः (śatravaḥ) - enemies; सह्या (sahyā) - bearable; न (na) - not; चेत् (cet) - if; जीवितुम् (jīvitum) - to live; इच्छसि (icchasi) - you wish; अथ (atha) - then; चेत् (cet) - if; ईदृशीम् (īdṛśīm) - such; वृत्तिम् (vṛttim) - conduct; क्लीबाम् (klībām) - unmanly; अभ्युपपद्यसे (abhyupapadyase) - you adopt;]
(All those enemies are bearable if you do not wish to live. Then, if you adopt such unmanly conduct.)
All those enemies can be endured if you do not wish to live. However, if you choose to adopt such cowardly behavior.
