vidurovāca॥
Vidura spoke:
athaitasyāmavasthāyāṃ pauruṣaṃ hātumicchasi । nihīnasevitaṃ mārgaṃ gamiṣyasyacirādiva ॥5-132-1॥
Then, in this state, if you wish to abandon your manliness, you will soon follow the path taken by the lowly.
yo hi tejo yathāśakti na darśayati vikramāt । kṣatriyo jīvitakāṅkṣī stena ityeva taṃ viduḥ ॥5-132-2॥
A warrior who does not display his strength according to his ability and valor, and is desirous of life, is indeed known as a thief.
arthavantyupapannāni vākyāni guṇavanti ca । naiva samprāpnuvanti tvāṃ mumūrṣumiva bheṣajam ॥5-132-3॥
Meaningful and appropriate statements, even if virtuous, do not reach you, just as medicine does not reach a dying person.
santi vai sindhurājasya santuṣṭā bahavo janāḥ । daurbalyādāsate mūḍhā vyasanaughapratīkṣiṇaḥ ॥5-132-4॥
There are indeed many people satisfied with Sindhuraja. However, due to weakness, fools sit idly, awaiting a multitude of misfortunes.
sahāyopacayaṃ kṛtvā vyavasāya tataḥ tataḥ । anuduṣyeyurapare paśyantas tava pauruṣam ॥5-132-5॥
After gathering allies and making efforts repeatedly, others would not envy you upon seeing your valor.
taiḥ kṛtvā saha saṅghātaṃ giridurgālayāṃścara । kāle vyasanamākāṅkṣannaivāyamajarāmaraḥ ॥5-132-6॥
By forming alliances with mountain fortresses, they move, desiring disaster in time, yet this one is not immortal.
sañjayo nāmataśca tvaṃ na ca paśyāmi tattvayi । anvarthanāmā bhava me putra mā vyarthanāmakaḥ ॥5-132-7॥
Sanjaya, you are known by name, but I do not see that in reality. My son, be true to your name and do not be one who is falsely named.
samyagdṛṣṭirmahāprājño bālaṃ tvāṃ brāhmaṇo'bravīt . ayaṃ prāpya mahatkṛcchraṃ punarvṛddhiṃ gamiṣyati ॥5-132-8॥
The wise Brahmin told you, the child, that after facing great difficulties, this person will grow again.
tasya smarantī vacanam āśaṁse vijayaṁ tava । tasmāttāta bravīmi tvāṁ vakṣyāmi ca punaḥ punaḥ ॥5-132-9॥
Recalling his words, I am hopeful for your success. Hence, dear one, I tell you, I will continue to speak repeatedly.
yasya hyarthābhinirvṛttau bhavantyāpyāyitāḥ pare । tasyārthasiddhirniyatā nayeṣvarthānusāriṇaḥ ॥5-132-10॥
Indeed, when others are nourished in the accomplishment of one's purpose, success is assured in policies that align with that purpose.
samṛddhirasamṛddhirvā pūrveṣāṃ mama sañjaya । evaṃ vidvānyuddhamanā bhava mā pratyupāhara ॥5-132-11॥
O Sanjaya, whether there is prosperity or not from our ancestors, be wise and ready for battle, do not counteract.
nātaḥ pāpīyasīṃ kāñcidavasthāṃ śambaro'bravīt । yatra naivādya na prātarbhojanaṃ pratidṛśyate ॥5-132-12॥
Śambara lamented the dire situation, noting that there was no worse condition than the current one, where food was not available either today or in the morning.
patiputravadhādetatparamaṃ duḥkhamabravīt । dāridryamiti yatproktaṃ paryāyamaraṇaṃ hi tat ॥5-132-13॥
The supreme sorrow from the killing of husband and son was expressed. It is said that poverty is indeed synonymous with death.
ahaṁ mahākule jātā hradāddhradamivāgatā । īśvarī sarvakalyāṇairbhartrā paramapūjitā ॥5-132-14॥
I was born into a noble family and have transitioned seamlessly, like moving from one lake to another. As a goddess, I am greatly revered by my husband, who embodies all that is auspicious.
mahārhamālyābharaṇāṃ sumṛṣṭāmbaravāsasam । purā dṛṣṭvā suhṛdvargo māmapaśyatsudurgatām ॥5-132-15॥
Once, when my friends saw me adorned with expensive garlands and ornaments, dressed in clean clothes, they later saw me in a very poor state.
yadā māṃ caiva bhāryāṃ ca draṣṭāsi bhṛśadurbale । na tadā jīvitena artho bhavitā tava sañjaya ॥5-132-16॥
When you see both me and my wife in a very weakened state, Sanjaya, you will find no purpose in life.
dāsakarmakarānbhṛtyānācāryartvikpurohitān । avṛttyāsmānprajahato dṛṣṭvā kiṃ jīvitena te ॥5-132-17॥
Seeing the servants, laborers, dependents, teachers, priests, and family priests abandoning us without any means of livelihood, what is the point of your life?
yadi kṛtyaṃ na paśyāmi tavādyeha yathā purā । ślāghanīyaṃ yaśasyaṃ ca kā śāntirhṛdayasya me ॥5-132-18॥
If I do not see your duty here today as it was before, what praiseworthy glory and peace of heart can I have?
neti ced brāhmaṇān brūyāṃ dīryate hṛdayaṃ mama । na hy ahaṃ na ca me bhartā neti brāhmaṇam uktavān ॥5-132-19॥
If I were to tell the Brahmins, "No, it is not so," it would break my heart. Indeed, neither I nor my husband said this to the Brahmin.
vayam āśrayaṇīyāḥ sma nāśritāraḥ parasya ca । sānyān āśritya jīvantī parityakṣyāmi jīvitam ॥5-132-20॥
We were meant to rely on ourselves, not be dependent on others. Depending on others for living, I will abandon life.
apāre bhava naḥ pāramaplave bhava naḥ plavaḥ । kuruṣva sthānamasthāne mṛtānsañjīvayasva naḥ ॥5-132-21॥
Be our boundless boat in the shoreless sea; create a place where there is none, and bring our dead back to life.
sarve te śatravaḥ sahyā na cejjīvitumicchasi । atha cedīdṛśīṃ vṛttiṃ klībāmabhyupapadyase ॥5-132-22॥
All those enemies can be endured if you do not wish to live. However, if you choose to adopt such cowardly behavior.
nirviṇṇātmā hatamanā muñcaitāṃ pāpajīvikām । ekaśatruvadhenaiva śūro gacchati viśrutim ॥5-132-23॥
Disheartened and dejected, you should abandon this sinful way of living. A hero gains fame by defeating even a single enemy.
indro vṛtravadhenaiva mahendraḥ samapadyata । māhendraṃ ca grahaṃ lebhe lokānāṃ ceśvaro'bhavat ॥5-132-24॥
Indra, by killing Vṛtra, truly became the great Indra. He acquired the position of Māhendra and became the lord of all worlds.
nāma viśrāvya vā saṅkhye śatrūnāhūya daṃśitān । senāgraṃ vāpi vidrāvya hatvā vā puruṣaṃ varam ॥5-132-25॥
Announce the name or call the provoked enemies in battle, scatter the army front, or kill the best man.
yadaiva labhate vīraḥ suyuddhena mahadyaśaḥ । tadaiva pravyathante'sya śatravo vinamanti ca ॥5-132-26॥
When a hero gains great fame through a noble battle, his enemies become distressed and bow down to him.
tyaktvāt mānaṃ raṇe dakṣaṃ śūraṃ kāpuruṣā janāḥ । avaśāḥ pūrayanti sma sarvakāmasamṛddhibhiḥ ॥5-132-27॥
Cowardly men, having abandoned their capable and heroic selves in battle, helplessly fulfill all desires.
rājyaṃ vāpyugravibhraṃśaṃ saṃśayo jīvitasya vā । pralabdhasya hi śatrorvai śeṣaṃ kurvanti sādhavaḥ ॥5-132-28॥
The virtuous indeed manage what remains of a kingdom, a great downfall, a doubt of life, or the deception of an enemy.
svargadvāropamaṃ rājyamatha vāpyamṛtopamam । ruddhamekāyane matvā patolmuka ivāriṣu ॥5-132-29॥
The kingdom, resembling the gate of heaven or like nectar, was blocked in a single path, perceived as a blazing firebrand among enemies.
jahi śatrūn raṇe rājan svadharmam anupālaya । mā tvā paśyet sukṛpaṇaṃ śatruḥ śrīmān kadācana ॥5-132-30॥
O king, conquer your enemies in battle and uphold your duty. Never let the enemy see you as pitiable, O prosperous one.
asmadīyaiśca śocadbhirnadadbhiśca parairvṛtam । api tvāṃ nānupaśyeyaṃ dīnā dīnamavasthitam ॥5-132-31॥
Even amidst our lamenting and crying people and others, I would not see you, distressed and miserable, in such a state.
uṣya sauvīrakanyābhiḥ ślāghasvārthairyathā purā । mā ca saindhavakanyānāmavasanno vaśaṃ gamaḥ ॥5-132-32॥
After staying with the daughters of Sauvīra, praised and with purpose as before, do not fall under the control of the daughters of Sindhu, feeling downcast.
yuvā rūpeṇa sampanno vidyayābhijanena ca । yastvādṛśo vikurvīta yaśasvī lokaviśrutaḥ ॥ voḍhavye dhuryanaḍuvanmanyē maraṇameva tat ॥5-132-33॥
A young man, endowed with beauty, knowledge, and noble birth, who acts like you, is famous and renowned in the world. Bearing burdens like a beast of burden, I think that is akin to death itself.
yadi tvāmanupaśyāmi parasya priyavādinam । pṛṣṭhato'nuvrajantaṃ vā kā śāntirhṛdayasya me ॥5-132-34॥
If I see you speaking pleasantly to someone else or following them, how can my heart be at peace?
nāsmiñ jātu kule jāto gacched yo'nyasya pṛṣṭhataḥ । na tvaṃ parasyānudhuraṃ tāta jīvitum arhasi ॥5-132-35॥
In this family, no one born should ever follow behind another. Dear son, you should not live under the control of another.
ahaṁ hi kṣatrahṛdayaṁ veda yatpariśāśvatam । pūrvaiḥ pūrvataraiḥ proktaṁ paraiḥ paratarairapi ॥5-132-36॥
I truly understand the eternal essence of a warrior's heart, as spoken by the ancients, the more ancient, others, and even the most ancient.
yo vai kaścidihājātaḥ kṣatriyaḥ kṣatradharmavit । bhayādvṛttisamīkṣo vā na namediha kasyacit ॥5-132-37॥
Any warrior born here, who understands the duty of a warrior, should not bow to anyone out of fear or mere observance of conduct.
udyacchedeva na namedudyamo hyeva pauruṣam । apyaparvaṇi bhajyeta na namediha kasyacit ॥5-132-38॥
Effort should be like the rising sun, never bowing down, as it represents true manliness. Even in adversity, it may break but should not bow to anyone here.
mātaṅgo matta iva ca parīyātsumahāmanāḥ । brāhmaṇebhyo namennityaṃ dharmāyaiva ca sañjaya ॥5-132-39॥
The wise person, like an intoxicated elephant, should roam freely and consistently show respect to the Brahmins and uphold Dharma, O Sanjaya.
niyacchannitarānvarṇānvinighnansarvaduṣkṛtaḥ । sasahāyo'sahāyo vā yāvajjīvaṃ tathā bhavet ॥5-132-40॥
One should control others' appearances and destroy all misdeeds, whether with help or without, for as long as one lives.
