samudyato'yaṁ bhāro me sumahānsāgaropamaḥ। dhārtarāṣṭrasya saṅgrāme varṣapūgābhicintitaḥ ॥5-166-1॥
[समुद्यतः (samudyataḥ) - prepared; अयम् (ayam) - this; भारः (bhāraḥ) - burden; मे (me) - my; सुमहान् (sumahān) - very great; सागर (sāgara) - ocean; उपमः (upamaḥ) - like; धार्तराष्ट्रस्य (dhārtarāṣṭrasya) - of Dhritarashtra's son; सङ्ग्रामे (saṅgrāme) - in battle; वर्ष (varṣa) - years; पूग (pūga) - many; अभिचिन्तितः (abhicintitaḥ) - contemplated;]
(This burden of mine, very great and like an ocean, is prepared in the battle of Dhritarashtra's son, contemplated for many years.)
This immense burden of mine, comparable to an ocean, has been prepared for the battle of Dhritarashtra's son, having been contemplated over many years.
तस्मिन्नभ्यागते काले प्रतप्ते लोमहर्षणे। मिथोभेदो न मे कार्यस्तेन जीवसि सूतज ॥५-१६६-२॥
tasminn abhyāgate kāle pratapte lomaharṣaṇe। mitho bhedo na me kāryas tena jīvasi sūtaja ॥5-166-2॥
[तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; अभ्यागते (abhyāgate) - arrived; काले (kāle) - time; प्रतप्ते (pratapte) - heated; लोमहर्षणे (lomaharṣaṇe) - hair-raising; मिथो (mitho) - mutual; भेदः (bhedaḥ) - division; न (na) - not; मे (me) - my; कार्यः (kāryaḥ) - duty; तेन (tena) - by that; जीवसि (jīvasi) - you live; सूतज (sūtaja) - O son of a charioteer;]
(In that arrived time, heated and hair-raising, mutual division is not my duty; by that, you live, O son of a charioteer.)
At that intense and thrilling moment, it is not my duty to cause division; thus, you live, O son of a charioteer.
न ह्यहं नाद्य विक्रम्य स्थविरोऽपि शिशोस्तव। युद्धश्रद्धां रणे छिन्द्यां जीवितस्य च सूतज ॥५-१६६-३॥
na hyahaṃ nādya vikramya sthaviro'pi śiśostava। yuddhaśraddhāṃ raṇe chindyāṃ jīvitasya ca sūtaja ॥5-166-3॥
[न (na) - not; हि (hi) - for; अहम् (aham) - I; न (na) - not; आद्य (ādya) - today; विक्रम्य (vikramya) - having attacked; स्थविरः (sthaviraḥ) - old; अपि (api) - even; शिशोः (śiśoḥ) - of the child; तव (tava) - your; युद्धश्रद्धाम् (yuddhaśraddhām) - faith in battle; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; छिन्द्याम् (chindyām) - would cut; जीवितस्य (jīvitasya) - of life; च (ca) - and; सूतज (sūtaja) - O son of Suta;]
(For I, even though old, would not today, having attacked, cut your child's faith in battle and life, O son of Suta.)

जामदग्न्येन रामेण महास्त्राणि प्रमुञ्चता। न मे व्यथाभवत्काचित्त्वं तु मे किं करिष्यसि ॥५-१६६-४॥
jāmadagnyena rāmeṇa mahāstrāṇi pramuñcatā। na me vyathābhavatkācittvaṃ tu me kiṃ kariṣyasi ॥5-166-4॥
[जामदग्न्येन (jāmadagnyena) - by Jamadagni's son; रामेण (rāmeṇa) - by Rama; महास्त्राणि (mahāstrāṇi) - great weapons; प्रमुञ्चता (pramuñcatā) - releasing; न (na) - not; मे (me) - to me; व्यथा (vyathā) - pain; अभवत् (abhavat) - was; काचित् (kācit) - any; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; तु (tu) - but; मे (me) - to me; किं (kiṃ) - what; करिष्यसि (kariṣyasi) - will do;]
(By Jamadagni's son, Rama, releasing great weapons, no pain was to me at all; but you, what will you do to me?)
When Rama, the son of Jamadagni, released his great weapons, I felt no pain at all; but what can you do to me?
कामं नैतत्प्रशंसन्ति सन्तोऽऽत्मबलसंस्तवम्। वक्ष्यामि तु त्वां सन्तप्तो निहीन कुलपांसन ॥५-१६६-५॥
kāmaṃ naitatpraśaṃsanti santo''tmabalasaṃstavam। vakṣyāmi tu tvāṃ santapto nihīna kulapāṃsana ॥5-166-5॥
[कामम् (kāmaṃ) - indeed; न (na) - not; एतत् (etat) - this; प्रशंसन्ति (praśaṃsanti) - praise; सन्तः (santaḥ) - wise ones; आत्मबलसंस्तवम् (ātmabalasaṃstavam) - self-strength praise; वक्ष्यामि (vakṣyāmi) - I will speak; तु (tu) - but; त्वाम् (tvām) - to you; सन्तप्तः (santaptaḥ) - distressed; निहीन (nihīna) - fallen; कुलपांसन (kulapāṃsana) - disgrace to the family;]
(Indeed, the wise ones do not praise this self-strength praise. But I will speak to you, distressed, O disgrace to the family.)
The wise do not commend self-praise of one's own strength. However, in my distress, I must speak to you, who are a disgrace to your lineage.
समेतं पार्थिवं क्षत्रं काशिराज्ञः स्वयंवरे। निर्जित्यैकरथेनैव यत्कन्यास्तरसा हृताः ॥५-१६६-६॥
sametaṃ pārthivaṃ kṣatraṃ kāśirājñaḥ svayaṃvare। nirjityaikarathenaiva yatkanyāstarasā hṛtāḥ ॥5-166-6॥
[समेतं (sametaṃ) - together; पार्थिवं (pārthivaṃ) - kings; क्षत्रं (kṣatraṃ) - warriors; काशिराज्ञः (kāśirājñaḥ) - of the king of Kashi; स्वयंवरे (svayaṃvare) - in the self-choice ceremony; निर्जित्य (nirjitya) - having conquered; एकरथेनैव (ekarathenaiva) - with a single chariot; यत् (yat) - whose; कन्याः (kanyāḥ) - daughters; तरसा (tarasā) - by force; हृताः (hṛtāḥ) - were taken away;]
(Together with the kings and warriors, in the self-choice ceremony of the king of Kashi, having conquered with a single chariot, whose daughters were taken away by force.)
In the self-choice ceremony of the king of Kashi, all the assembled kings and warriors were defeated by a single chariot, and the daughters were forcibly taken away.
ईदृशानां सहस्राणि विशिष्टानामथो पुनः। मयैकेन निरस्तानि ससैन्यानि रणाजिरे ॥५-१६६-७॥
īdṛśānāṃ sahasrāṇi viśiṣṭānāmatho punaḥ। mayaikena nirastāni sasainyāni raṇājire ॥5-166-7॥
[ईदृशानां (īdṛśānāṃ) - of such; सहस्राणि (sahasrāṇi) - thousands; विशिष्टानाम् (viśiṣṭānām) - of distinguished; अथः (atho) - then; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; मया (mayā) - by me; एकेन (ekena) - alone; निरस्तानि (nirastāni) - defeated; ससैन्यानि (sasainyāni) - with armies; रणाजिरे (raṇājire) - in the battlefield;]
(Thousands of such distinguished ones, then again, were defeated by me alone with armies in the battlefield.)

त्वां प्राप्य वैरपुरुषं कुरूणामनयो महान्। उपस्थितो विनाशाय यतस्व पुरुषो भव ॥५-१६६-८॥
tvāṃ prāpya vairapuruṣaṃ kurūṇāmanayo mahān। upasthito vināśāya yatasva puruṣo bhava ॥5-166-8॥
[त्वां (tvām) - you; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having obtained; वैरपुरुषं (vairapuruṣam) - enemy person; कुरूणाम् (kurūṇām) - of the Kuru; अनयः (anayaḥ) - misfortune; महान् (mahān) - great; उपस्थितः (upasthitaḥ) - present; विनाशाय (vināśāya) - for destruction; यतस्व (yatasva) - strive; पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - man; भव (bhava) - be;]
(Having obtained you, the enemy person of the Kuru, great misfortune is present for destruction; strive to be a man.)
Having encountered you, the enemy of the Kuru, a great misfortune has arisen, strive to be a man for the sake of destruction.
युध्यस्व पार्थं समरे येन विस्पर्धसे सह। द्रक्ष्यामि त्वां विनिर्मुक्तमस्माद्युद्धात्सुदुर्मते ॥५-१६६-९॥
yudhyasva pārthaṃ samare yena vispardhase saha। drakṣyāmi tvāṃ vinirmuktam asmād yuddhāt sudurmate ॥5-166-9॥
[युध्यस्व (yudhyasva) - fight; पार्थं (pārthaṃ) - O son of Pritha; समरे (samare) - in battle; येन (yena) - with whom; विस्पर्धसे (vispardhase) - you compete; सह (saha) - together; द्रक्ष्यामि (drakṣyāmi) - I will see; त्वां (tvāṃ) - you; विनिर्मुक्तम् (vinirmuktam) - freed; अस्मात् (asmāt) - from this; युद्धात् (yuddhāt) - battle; सुदुर्मते (sudurmate) - O wicked-minded;]
(Fight, O son of Pritha, in battle with whom you compete together. I will see you freed from this battle, O wicked-minded.)
Engage in the battle, O son of Pritha, against those you compete with. I shall witness you being liberated from this conflict, O one with a wicked mind.
सञ्जय उवाच॥

तमुवाच ततो राजा धार्तराष्ट्रो महामनाः। मामवेक्षस्व गाङ्गेय कार्यं हि महदुद्यतम् ॥५-१६६-१०॥
tamuvāca tato rājā dhārtarāṣṭro mahāmanāḥ। māmavekṣasva gāṅgeya kāryaṃ hi mahadudyatam ॥5-166-10॥
[तम् (tam) - him; उवाच (uvāca) - said; ततः (tataḥ) - then; राजा (rājā) - king; धार्तराष्ट्रः (dhārtarāṣṭraḥ) - Dhritarashtra; महामनाः (mahāmanāḥ) - great-minded; माम् (mām) - me; अवेक्षस्व (avekṣasva) - consider; गाङ्गेय (gāṅgeya) - son of Ganga; कार्यं (kāryaṃ) - task; हि (hi) - indeed; महत् (mahat) - great; उद्यतम् (udyatam) - undertaken;]
(Then the great-minded King Dhritarashtra said to him, 'Consider me, O son of Ganga, for a great task is indeed undertaken.')
Then the wise King Dhritarashtra addressed him, 'O son of Ganga, please consider me, as a significant task is indeed underway.'
चिन्त्यतामिदमेवाग्रे मम निःश्रेयसं परम्। उभावपि भवन्तौ मे महत्कर्म करिष्यतः ॥५-१६६-११॥
cintyatām idam eva agre mama niḥśreyasaṃ param। ubhāv api bhavantau me mahatkarma kariṣyataḥ ॥5-166-11॥
[चिन्त्यताम् (cintyatām) - let it be considered; इदम् (idam) - this; एव (eva) - only; अग्रे (agre) - first; मम (mama) - my; निःश्रेयसं (niḥśreyasaṃ) - ultimate good; परम् (param) - supreme; उभावपि (ubhāv api) - both also; भवन्तौ (bhavantau) - you two; मे (me) - my; महत्कर्म (mahatkarma) - great deed; करिष्यतः (kariṣyataḥ) - will do;]
(Let this alone be considered first, my supreme ultimate good. Both of you will perform my great deed.)

भूयश्च श्रोतुमिच्छामि परेषां रथसत्तमान्। ये चैवातिरथास्तत्र तथैव रथयूथपाः ॥५-१६६-१२॥
bhūyaśca śrotumicchāmi pareṣāṃ rathasattamān। ye caivātirathāstatra tathaiva rathayūthapāḥ ॥5-166-12॥
[भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - again; च (ca) - and; श्रोतुम् (śrotum) - to hear; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I wish; परेषाम् (pareṣām) - of others; रथसत्तमान् (rathasattamān) - the best of charioteers; ये (ye) - who; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; अतिरथाः (atirathāḥ) - great charioteers; तत्र (tatra) - there; तथैव (tathaiva) - likewise; रथयूथपाः (rathayūthapāḥ) - leaders of chariots;]
(Again, I wish to hear of the best of charioteers of others, who are indeed great charioteers there, likewise the leaders of chariots.)
I wish to hear once more about the best charioteers among others, those who are considered great charioteers there, as well as the leaders of the chariots.
बलाबलममित्राणां श्रोतुमिच्छामि कौरव। प्रभातायां रजन्यां वै इदं युद्धं भविष्यति ॥५-१६६-१३॥
balābalamamitrāṇāṃ śrotumicchāmi kaurava। prabhātāyāṃ rajanyāṃ vai idaṃ yuddhaṃ bhaviṣyati ॥5-166-13॥
[बलाबलम् (balābalam) - strength and weakness; अमित्राणाम् (amitrāṇām) - of the enemies; श्रोतुम् (śrotum) - to hear; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I wish; कौरव (kaurava) - O Kaurava; प्रभातायाम् (prabhātāyām) - at dawn; रजन्याम् (rajanyām) - in the night; वै (vai) - indeed; इदम् (idam) - this; युद्धम् (yuddham) - battle; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will happen;]
(I wish to hear the strength and weakness of the enemies, O Kaurava. Indeed, this battle will happen at dawn in the night.)
O Kaurava, I wish to know the strengths and weaknesses of the enemies. This battle is indeed set to take place at dawn.

ete rathāste saṅkhyātāstathaivātirathā nṛpa। ya cāpyardharathā rājanpāṇḍavānāmataḥ śṛṇu ॥5-166-14॥
[एते (ete) - these; रथाः (rathāḥ) - chariots; ते (te) - those; सङ्ख्याताः (saṅkhyātāḥ) - counted; तथा (tathā) - thus; एव (eva) - indeed; अतिरथाः (atirathāḥ) - great charioteers; नृप (nṛpa) - O king; यः (yaḥ) - who; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अर्धरथाः (ardharathāḥ) - half-charioteers; राजन् (rājan) - O king; पाण्डवानाम् (pāṇḍavānām) - of the Pandavas; अतः (ataḥ) - therefore; शृणु (śṛṇu) - listen;]
(These chariots, those counted, thus indeed great charioteers, O king, who also half-charioteers, O king, of the Pandavas, therefore listen.)
O King, these chariots and those counted as great charioteers, as well as those who are half-charioteers, are of the Pandavas. Therefore, listen.
यदि कौतूहलं तेऽद्य पाण्डवानां बले नृप। रथसङ्ख्यां महाबाहो सहैभिर्वसुधाधिपैः ॥५-१६६-१५॥
yadi kautūhalaṃ te'dya pāṇḍavānāṃ bale nṛpa। rathasaṅkhyāṃ mahābāho sahaibhirvasudhādhipaiḥ ॥5-166-15॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; कौतूहलम् (kautūhalam) - curiosity; ते (te) - your; अद्य (adya) - today; पाण्डवानाम् (pāṇḍavānām) - of the Pandavas; बले (bale) - in the strength; नृप (nṛpa) - O king; रथसङ्ख्याम् (rathasaṅkhyām) - the number of chariots; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed one; सहैभिः (sahaibhiḥ) - along with; वसुधाधिपैः (vasudhādhipaiḥ) - the lords of the earth;]

(Bhimasena, O king, his chariot is measured eightfold; with the strength of ten thousand elephants, proud by brilliance, he is not a human.)
O King, Bhimasena's chariot is extraordinary, possessing the strength of ten thousand elephants. Proud and radiant, he is beyond human.
माद्रीपुत्रौ तु रथिनौ द्वावेव पुरुषर्षभौ। अश्विनाविव रूपेण तेजसा च समन्वितौ ॥५-१६६-१८॥
mādrīputrau tu rathinau dvāveva puruṣarṣabhau। aśvināviva rūpeṇa tejasā ca samanvitau ॥5-166-18॥
[माद्रीपुत्रौ (mādrīputrau) - sons of Madri; तु (tu) - but; रथिनौ (rathinau) - charioteers; द्वौ (dvau) - two; एव (eva) - indeed; पुरुषर्षभौ (puruṣarṣabhau) - bulls among men; अश्विनौ (aśvinau) - Ashvins; इव (iva) - like; रूपेण (rūpeṇa) - in form; तेजसा (tejasā) - in brilliance; च (ca) - and; समन्वितौ (samanvitau) - endowed;]
(The sons of Madri, indeed two charioteers, bulls among men, like the Ashvins, endowed with form and brilliance.)
The sons of Madri, Nakula and Sahadeva, were two charioteers, exceptional among men, like the Ashvins in form and brilliance.
एते चमूमुखगताः स्मरन्तः क्लेशमात्मनः। रुद्रवत्प्रचरिष्यन्ति तत्र मे नास्ति संशयः ॥५-१६६-१९॥
ete camūmukhagatāḥ smarantaḥ kleśamātmanaḥ। rudravatpracariṣyanti tatra me nāsti saṃśayaḥ ॥5-166-19॥
[एते (ete) - these; चमूमुखगताः (camūmukhagatāḥ) - at the front of the army; स्मरन्तः (smarantaḥ) - remembering; क्लेशम् (kleśam) - pain; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of themselves; रुद्रवत् (rudravat) - like Rudra; प्रचरिष्यन्ति (pracariṣyanti) - will act; तत्र (tatra) - there; मे (me) - my; न (na) - not; अस्ति (asti) - is; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(These, at the front of the army, remembering their own pain, will act like Rudra; there is no doubt in my mind.)
There is no doubt in my mind that these warriors, at the forefront of the army, will act like Rudra, remembering their own suffering.
सर्व एव महात्मानः शालस्कन्धा इवोद्गताः। प्रादेशेनाधिकाः पुम्भिरन्यैस्ते च प्रमाणतः ॥५-१६६-२०॥
sarva eva mahātmānaḥ śālaskandhā ivodgatāḥ। prādeśenādhikāḥ pumbhiranyaisthe ca pramāṇataḥ ॥5-166-20॥
[सर्व (sarva) - all; एव (eva) - indeed; महात्मानः (mahātmānaḥ) - great souls; शालस्कन्धा (śālaskandhā) - like trunks of trees; इव (iva) - like; उद्गताः (udgatāḥ) - risen; प्रादेशेन (prādeśena) - by measure; अधिकाः (adhikāḥ) - exceeding; पुम्भिः (pumbhiḥ) - by men; अन्यैः (anyaiḥ) - other; ते (te) - they; च (ca) - and; प्रमाणतः (pramāṇataḥ) - by size;]
(All indeed are great souls, like trunks of trees risen, exceeding by measure other men, and they by size.)
All of them are truly great souls, standing tall like the trunks of trees, surpassing other men in stature and size.
सिंहसंहननाः सर्वे पाण्डुपुत्रा महाबलाः। चरितब्रह्मचर्याश्च सर्वे चातितपस्विनः ॥५-१६६-२१॥
siṃhasaṃhananāḥ sarve pāṇḍuputrā mahābalāḥ। caritabrahmacaryāśca sarve cātitapasvinaḥ ॥5-166-21॥
[सिंहसंहननाः (siṃhasaṃhananāḥ) - lion-bodied; सर्वे (sarve) - all; पाण्डुपुत्राः (pāṇḍuputrāḥ) - sons of Pandu; महाबलाः (mahābalāḥ) - mighty; चरितब्रह्मचर्याः (caritabrahmacaryāḥ) - practiced celibacy; च (ca) - and; सर्वे (sarve) - all; चातितपस्विनः (cātitapasvinaḥ) - great ascetics;]
(All the sons of Pandu are lion-bodied, mighty, practiced celibacy, and are great ascetics.)
All the sons of Pandu are strong and mighty like lions, having practiced celibacy and being great ascetics.
ह्रीमन्तः पुरुषव्याघ्रा व्याघ्रा इव बलोत्कटाः। जवे प्रहारे संमर्दे सर्व एवातिमानुषाः ॥ सर्वे जितमहीपाला दिग्जये भरतर्षभ ॥५-१६६-२२॥
hrīmantaḥ puruṣavyāghrā vyāghrā iva balotkaṭāḥ। jave prahāre saṃmarde sarva evātimānuṣāḥ ॥ sarve jitamahīpālā digjaye bharatarṣabha ॥5-166-22॥

(Respected, tiger-like men, mighty like tigers, in speed, in attack, in battle, all indeed superhuman. All conquerors of kings in conquest of directions, O best of the Bharatas.)

न चैषां पुरुषाः केचिदायुधानि गदाः शरान्। विषहन्ति सदा कर्तुमधिज्यान्यपि कौरव ॥ उद्यन्तुं वा गदां गुर्वीं शरान्वापि प्रकर्षितुम् ॥५-१६६-२३॥
