Core and Pancharatra: Bhima smashes Duryodhana, causing him to collapse in the chariot. Along with his charioteer, the Kaurava army retreats. Gaining consciousness, Duryodhana rebukes Bhishma for his weak leadership.

ततस्ते पार्थिवाः क्रुद्धाः फल्गुनं वीक्ष्य संयुगे। रथैरनेकसाहस्रैः समन्तात्पर्यवारयन् ॥६-५४-१॥
tataste pārthivāḥ kruddhāḥ phalgunaṃ vīkṣya saṃyuge। rathairanekasāhasraiḥ samantātparyavārayan ॥6-54-1॥

(Then, the kings, angry, seeing Arjuna in battle, surrounded him all around with many thousands of chariots.)
Then, the enraged kings, upon seeing Arjuna in the battle, surrounded him from all sides with their numerous thousands of chariots.
अथैनं रथवृन्देन कोष्टकीकृत्य भारत। शरैः सुबहुसाहस्रैः समन्तादभ्यवारयन् ॥६-५४-२॥

(Then, having surrounded him with the group of chariots, O Bharata, they attacked with many thousands of arrows from all sides.)
Then, O Bharata, they surrounded him with a group of chariots and attacked from all sides with countless arrows.
शक्तीश्च विमलास्तीक्ष्णा गदाश्च परिघैः सह। प्रासान्परश्वधांश्चैव मुद्गरान्मुसलानपि ॥ चिक्षिपुः समरे क्रुद्धाः फल्गुनस्य रथं प्रति ॥६-५४-३॥

(Spears and bright, sharp maces along with clubs, javelins, battle-axes, hammers, and clubs were thrown in the battle by the angry ones towards Arjuna's chariot.)
In the battle, the warriors, in their anger, hurled spears, bright and sharp maces, along with clubs, javelins, battle-axes, hammers, and clubs towards Arjuna's chariot.
शस्त्राणामथ तां वृष्टिं शलभानामिवायतिम्। रुरोध सर्वतः पार्थः शरैः कनकभूषणैः ॥६-५४-४॥
śastrāṇām atha tāṃ vṛṣṭiṃ śalabhānām ivāyatim। rurodha sarvataḥ pārthaḥ śaraiḥ kanakabhūṣaṇaiḥ ॥6-54-4॥

(Then Arjuna blocked that shower of weapons, extending like locusts, from all sides with golden-ornamented arrows.)
Arjuna, with his golden-ornamented arrows, blocked the entire shower of weapons that was coming from all directions, resembling a swarm of locusts.
तत्र तल्लाघवं दृष्ट्वा बीभत्सोरतिमानुषम्। देवदानवगन्धर्वाः पिशाचोरगराक्षसाः ॥ साधु साध्विति राजेन्द्र फल्गुनं प्रत्यपूजयन् ॥६-५४-५॥
tatra tallāghavaṃ dṛṣṭvā bībhatsoratimānuṣam। devadānavagandharvāḥ piśācoragarākṣasāḥ ॥ sādhu sādhviti rājendra phalgunaṃ pratyapūjayan ॥6-54-5॥

(There, having seen that lightness of Bibhatsu (Arjuna), which was superhuman, the gods, demons, celestial musicians, goblins, serpents, and ogres honored Arjuna, saying "Well done, well done," O king.)
Upon witnessing the extraordinary agility of Arjuna, which was beyond human capability, the gods, demons, celestial musicians, goblins, serpents, and ogres praised Arjuna, exclaiming "Well done, well done," O king.
सात्यकिं चाभिमन्युं च महत्या सेनया सह। गान्धाराः समरे शूरा रुरुधुः सहसौबलाः ॥६-५४-६॥
sātyakiṃ cābhimanyuṃ ca mahatyā senayā saha। gāndhārāḥ samare śūrā rurudhuḥ sahasaubalāḥ ॥6-54-6॥

Satyaki and Abhimanyu, along with a great army, were heroically blocked in battle by the Gandharas with Saubala.
तत्र सौबलकाः क्रुद्धा वार्ष्णेयस्य रथोत्तमम्। तिलशश्चिच्छिदुः क्रोधाच्छस्त्रैर्नानाविधैर्युधि ॥६-५४-७॥
tatra saubalakāḥ kruddhā vārṣṇeyasya rathottamam। tilaśaścicchiduḥ krodhācchastrairnānāvidhairyudhi ॥6-54-7॥

(There, the sons of Subala, angry, cut the best chariot of the descendant of Vṛṣṇi into pieces with various kinds of weapons out of anger in battle.)
In that battle, the enraged sons of Subala attacked and shattered the finest chariot of the Vṛṣṇi prince into pieces using a variety of weapons.
सात्यकिस्तु रथं त्यक्त्वा वर्तमाने महाभये। अभिमन्यो रथं तूर्णमारुरोह परन्तपः ॥६-५४-८॥
sātyakistu rathaṃ tyaktvā vartamāne mahābhaye। abhimanyo rathaṃ tūrṇamāruroha parantapaḥ ॥6-54-8॥

(Satyaki, having abandoned the chariot in the ongoing great danger, quickly ascended Abhimanyu's chariot, O scorcher of foes.)
In the midst of the great danger, Satyaki left his chariot and quickly climbed onto Abhimanyu's chariot, O scorcher of foes.
तावेकरथसंयुक्तौ सौबलेयस्य वाहिनीम्। व्यधमेतां शितैस्तूर्णं शरैः संनतपर्वभिः ॥६-५४-९॥
tāvekarathasaṁyuktau saubaleyasya vāhinīm। vyadhametāṁ śitaistūrṇaṁ śaraiḥ saṁnataparvabhiḥ ॥6-54-9॥
[तौ (tau) - they; एकरथसंयुक्तौ (ekarathasaṁyuktau) - joined in one chariot; सौबलेयस्य (saubaleyasya) - of Saubala's son; वाहिनीम् (vāhinīm) - army; व्यधमताम् (vyadhamatām) - pierced; शितैः (śitaiḥ) - sharp; तूर्णम् (tūrṇam) - quickly; शरैः (śaraiḥ) - with arrows; संनतपर्वभिः (saṁnataparvabhiḥ) - with well-bent joints;]
(They, joined in one chariot, quickly pierced the army of Saubala's son with sharp arrows with well-bent joints.)
The two warriors, united in a single chariot, swiftly attacked the army of Saubala's son with their sharp, well-crafted arrows.
द्रोणभीष्मौ रणे यत्तौ धर्मराजस्य वाहिनीम्। नाशयेतां शरैस्तीक्ष्णैः कङ्कपत्रपरिच्छदैः ॥६-५४-१०॥
droṇabhīṣmau raṇe yattau dharmarājasya vāhinīm। nāśayetāṃ śaraistīkṣṇaiḥ kaṅkapatraparicchadaiḥ ॥6-54-10॥

(Drona and Bhishma, engaged in battle, destroyed the army of Dharmaraja with sharp arrows equipped with vulture-feathered (shafts).)
In the battle, Drona and Bhishma fiercely attacked and decimated the army of Dharmaraja using sharp arrows adorned with vulture feathers.
ततो धर्मसुतो राजा माद्रीपुत्रौ च पाण्डवौ। मिषतां सर्वसैन्यानां द्रोणानीकमुपाद्रवन् ॥६-५४-११॥
tato dharmasuto rājā mādrīputrau ca pāṇḍavau। miṣatāṃ sarvasainyānāṃ droṇānīkamupādravan ॥6-54-11॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; धर्मसुतः (dharmasutaḥ) - son of Dharma; राजा (rājā) - king; माद्रीपुत्रौ (mādrīputrau) - sons of Madri; च (ca) - and; पाण्डवौ (pāṇḍavau) - Pandavas; मिषताम् (miṣatām) - in the sight; सर्वसैन्यानाम् (sarvasainyānām) - of all armies; द्रोणानीकम् (droṇānīkam) - Drona's formation; उपाद्रवन् (upādravan) - attacked;]
(Then the son of Dharma, the king, and the sons of Madri, the Pandavas, attacked Drona's formation in the sight of all armies.)
Then, King Yudhishthira, the son of Dharma, along with the sons of Madri, the Pandavas, launched an attack on Drona's military formation while all the armies watched.
तत्रासीत्सुमहद्युद्धं तुमुलं लोमहर्षणम्। यथा देवासुरं युद्धं पूर्वमासीत्सुदारुणम् ॥६-५४-१२॥
tatrāsītsumahadyuddhaṃ tumulaṃ lomaharṣaṇam। yathā devāsuraṃ yuddhaṃ pūrvamāsītsudāruṇam ॥6-54-12॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; सुमहत् (sumahat) - very great; युद्धं (yuddhaṃ) - battle; तुमुलं (tumulaṃ) - fierce; लोमहर्षणम् (lomaharṣaṇam) - hair-raising; यथा (yathā) - as; देव (deva) - gods; असुरं (asuraṃ) - demons; युद्धं (yuddhaṃ) - battle; पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - before; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; सुदारुणम् (sudāruṇam) - very terrible;]
(There was a very great, fierce, hair-raising battle, as the battle between gods and demons was before, very terrible.)
There was a fierce and terrifying battle, reminiscent of the ancient and dreadful battles between the gods and demons.
कुर्वाणौ तु महत्कर्म भीमसेनघटोत्कचौ। दुर्योधनस्ततोऽभ्येत्य तावुभावभ्यवारयत् ॥६-५४-१३॥
kurvāṇau tu mahatkarma bhīmasenaghaṭotkacau। duryodhanastato'bhyetya tāvubhāvabhyavārayat ॥6-54-13॥
[कुर्वाणौ (kurvāṇau) - doing; तु (tu) - but; महत्कर्म (mahatkarma) - great deeds; भीमसेनघटोत्कचौ (bhīmasenaghaṭotkacau) - Bhimasena and Ghatotkacha; दुर्योधनः (duryodhanaḥ) - Duryodhana; ततः (tataḥ) - then; अभ्येत्य (abhyetya) - approaching; तौ (tau) - those two; उभौ (ubhau) - both; अभ्यवारयत् (abhyavārayat) - stopped;]
(But doing great deeds, Bhimasena and Ghatotkacha, then Duryodhana approached and stopped both of them.)
While Bhimasena and Ghatotkacha were engaged in great deeds, Duryodhana approached and halted them both.
तत्राद्भुतमपश्याम हैडिम्बस्य पराक्रमम्। अतीत्य पितरं युद्धे यदयुध्यत भारत ॥६-५४-१४॥
tatrādbhutamapaśyāma haiḍimbasya parākramam। atītya pitaraṃ yuddhe yadayudhyata bhārata ॥6-54-14॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; अद्भुतम् (adbhutam) - wonderful; अपश्याम (apaśyāma) - we saw; हैडिम्बस्य (haiḍimbasya) - of Hidimba; पराक्रमम् (parākramam) - valor; अतीत्य (atītya) - surpassing; पितरं (pitaraṃ) - father; युद्धे (yuddhe) - in battle; यदा (yadā) - when; अयुध्यत (ayudhyata) - he fought; भारत (bhārata) - O Bharata;]
(There we saw the wonderful valor of Hidimba, surpassing his father in battle when he fought, O Bharata.)
There, O Bharata, we witnessed the extraordinary valor of Hidimba, who surpassed his father in battle.
भीमसेनस्तु सङ्क्रुद्धो दुर्योधनममर्षणम्। हृद्यविध्यत्पृषत्केन प्रहसन्निव पाण्डवः ॥६-५४-१५॥
bhīmasenastu saṅkruddho duryodhanamamarṣaṇam। hṛdyavidhyatpṛṣatkena prahasanniva pāṇḍavaḥ ॥6-54-15॥

(Bhimasena, enraged, pierced the impatient Duryodhana in the heart with an arrow, as if smiling.)
Bhimasena, in his fury, struck Duryodhana in the heart with an arrow, smiling as if mocking him.
ततो दुर्योधनो राजा प्रहारवरमोहितः। निषसाद रथोपस्थे कश्मलं च जगाम ह ॥६-५४-१६॥
tato duryodhano rājā prahāravaramohitaḥ। niṣasāda rathopasthe kaśmalaṃ ca jagāma ha ॥6-54-16॥

(Then King Duryodhana, bewildered by the great blow, sat down on the chariot seat and indeed went into distress.)
Then King Duryodhana, struck by a powerful blow, sat down on his chariot seat, overwhelmed by distress.
तं विसञ्ज्ञमथो ज्ञात्वा त्वरमाणोऽस्य सारथिः। अपोवाह रणाद्राजंस्ततः सैन्यमभिद्यत ॥६-५४-१७॥
taṁ visañjñamatho jñātvā tvaramāṇo'sya sārathiḥ। apovāha raṇādrājaṁstataḥ sainyamabhidyata ॥6-54-17॥

(Then, knowing him unconscious, his charioteer hastily carried him away from the battlefield, O king; then the army was broken.)
Seeing him unconscious, his charioteer quickly took him away from the battlefield, O king, and then the army was shattered.
ततस्तां कौरवीं सेनां द्रवमाणां समन्ततः। निघ्नन्भीमः शरैस्तीक्ष्णैरनुवव्राज पृष्ठतः ॥६-५४-१८॥
tatastāṃ kauravīṃ senāṃ dravamāṇāṃ samantataḥ। nighnanbhīmaḥ śaraistīkṣṇairanuvavrāja pṛṣṭhataḥ ॥6-54-18॥

(Then Bhima, slaying the fleeing Kaurava army all around with sharp arrows, followed from behind.)
Then Bhima pursued the fleeing Kaurava army from all sides, striking them with his sharp arrows from behind.
पार्षतश्च रथश्रेष्ठो धर्मपुत्रश्च पाण्डवः। द्रोणस्य पश्यतः सैन्यं गाङ्गेयस्य च पश्यतः ॥ जघ्नतुर्विशिखैस्तीक्ष्णैः परानीकविशातनैः ॥६-५४-१९॥

(The son of Prishata and the best of charioteers, the son of Dharma and Pandava, while Drona and the son of Ganga were watching, struck the enemy's army with sharp, piercing arrows.)

द्रवमाणं तु तत्सैन्यं तव पुत्रस्य संयुगे। नाशक्नुतां वारयितुं भीष्मद्रोणौ महारथौ ॥६-५४-२०॥
dravamāṇaṃ tu tatsainyaṃ tava putrasya saṃyuge। nāśaknutāṃ vārayituṃ bhīṣmadroṇau mahārathau ॥6-54-20॥

(But that which is possible for me to do today by the elder, O best of kings, I shall do according to ability; may he now see with relatives.)
O best of kings, I will do what is possible for me today, as per my ability, under the guidance of the elder. Let him now witness this along with his relatives.
अद्य पाण्डुसुतान्सर्वान्ससैन्यान्सह बन्धुभिः। मिषतो वारयिष्यामि सर्वलोकस्य पश्यतः ॥६-५४-४२॥
adya pāṇḍusutānsarvānsasainyānsaha bandhubhiḥ। miṣato vārayiṣyāmi sarvalokasya paśyataḥ ॥6-54-42॥
[अद्य (adya) - today; पाण्डुसुतान् (pāṇḍusutān) - sons of Pandu; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; ससैन्यान् (sasainyān) - with armies; सह (saha) - with; बन्धुभिः (bandhubhiḥ) - relatives; मिषतः (miṣataḥ) - while watching; वारयिष्यामि (vārayiṣyāmi) - I will stop; सर्वलोकस्य (sarvalokasya) - of all the world; पश्यतः (paśyataḥ) - while seeing;]
(Today, I will stop all the sons of Pandu with their armies and relatives, while all the world watches.)
Today, I will halt all the sons of Pandu along with their armies and relatives, as the entire world looks on.
एवमुक्ते तु भीष्मेण पुत्रास्तव जनेश्वर। दध्मुः शङ्खान्मुदा युक्ता भेरीश्च जघ्निरे भृशम् ॥६-५४-४३॥
evamukte tu bhīṣmeṇa putrāstava janeśvara। dadhmuḥ śaṅkhānmudā yuktā bherīśca jaghnire bhṛśam ॥6-54-43॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्ते (ukte) - having been spoken; तु (tu) - but; भीष्मेण (bhīṣmeṇa) - by Bhishma; पुत्राः (putrāḥ) - sons; तव (tava) - your; जनेश्वर (janeśvara) - O lord of the people; दध्मुः (dadhmuḥ) - blew; शङ्खान् (śaṅkhān) - conches; मुदा (mudā) - with joy; युक्ताः (yuktāḥ) - engaged; भेरीः (bherīḥ) - drums; च (ca) - and; जघ्निरे (jaghnire) - sounded; भृशम् (bhṛśam) - very loudly;]
(Thus, having been spoken by Bhishma, your sons, O lord of the people, blew conches with joy, engaged drums and sounded very loudly.)
Upon Bhishma's words, your sons, O king, joyfully blew their conches and beat the drums loudly.
पाण्डवापि ततो राजञ्श्रुत्वा तं निनदं महत्। दध्मुः शङ्खांश्च भेरीश्च मुरजांश्च व्यनादयन् ॥६-५४-४४॥
pāṇḍavāpi tato rājañśrutvā taṃ ninadaṃ mahat। dadhmuḥ śaṅkhāṃśca bherīśca murajāṃśca vyanādayan ॥6-54-44॥
[पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - Pandavas; अपि (api) - also; ततः (tataḥ) - then; राजन् (rājan) - O king; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; तम् (tam) - that; निनदम् (ninadam) - sound; महत् (mahat) - great; दध्मुः (dadhmuḥ) - blew; शङ्खान् (śaṅkhān) - conches; च (ca) - and; भेरीः (bherīḥ) - drums; च (ca) - and; मुरजान् (murajān) - kettledrums; च (ca) - and; व्यानादयन् (vyanādayan) - resounded;]
(Then, O king, the Pandavas also, having heard that great sound, blew their conches, and drums, and kettledrums resounded.)
