[शरतल्पे (śaratalpe) - on the bed of arrows; महात्मानं (mahātmānam) - great soul; शयानम् (śayānam) - lying; अमितौजसम् (amitaujasam) - of immeasurable energy; महावातसमूहेन (mahāvātasamūhena) - by the great mass of winds; समुद्रम् (samudram) - ocean; इव (iva) - like; शोषितम् (śoṣitam) - dried up;]
(On the bed of arrows, the great soul, lying with immeasurable energy, like an ocean dried up by the great mass of winds.)

दिव्यैरस्त्रैर्महेष्वासं पातितं सव्यसाचिना। जयाशां तव पुत्राणां सम्भग्नां शर्म वर्म च ॥७-३-२॥

(By divine weapons, the great archer was felled by Savyasachi. The hope of victory of your sons, protection, and armor were shattered.)
The great archer was brought down by Savyasachi using divine weapons. The hopes of victory for your sons, along with their protection and armor, were shattered.
अपाराणामिव द्वीपमगाधे गाधमिच्छताम्। स्रोतसा यामुनेनेव शरौघेण परिप्लुतम् ॥७-३-३॥
apārāṇām iva dvīpam agādhe gādham icchatām। srotasā yāmuneneva śaraugheṇa pariplutam ॥7-3-3॥

(Like an island in the unfathomable, desiring depth, flooded by the stream of the Yamuna, like by the flood of arrows.)
It is like an island in the boundless ocean, seeking depth, overwhelmed by the Yamuna's stream, akin to being flooded by a torrent of arrows.
महान्तमिव मैनाकमसह्यं भुवि पातितम्। नभश्च्युतमिवादित्यं पतितं धरणीतले ॥७-३-४॥
mahāntamiva mainākamasahyaṃ bhuvi pātitam। nabhaścyutamivādityaṃ patitaṃ dharaṇītale ॥7-3-4॥
[महान्तम् (mahāntam) - great; इव (iva) - like; मैनाकम् (mainākam) - Mainaka; असह्यम् (asahyam) - unbearable; भुवि (bhuvi) - on the ground; पातितम् (pātitam) - fallen; नभः (nabhaḥ) - from the sky; च्युतम् (cyutam) - fallen; इव (iva) - like; आदित्यम् (ādityam) - the sun; पतितम् (patitam) - fallen; धरणीतले (dharaṇītale) - on the earth;]
(Like a great Mainaka, unbearable, fallen on the ground. Like the sun fallen from the sky, fallen on the earth.)
It was like the great Mainaka mountain, unbearable, having fallen on the ground, and like the sun that had fallen from the sky onto the earth.
शतक्रतोरिवाचिन्त्यं पुरा वृत्रेण निर्जयम्। मोहनं सर्वसैन्यस्य युधि भीष्मस्य पातनम् ॥७-३-५॥
śatakratorivācintyaṃ purā vṛtreṇa nirjayam। mohanaṃ sarvasainyasya yudhi bhīṣmasya pātanam ॥7-3-5॥

The bewildering conquest of Indra by Vritra in ancient times is akin to the confusion of the entire army and the fall of Bhishma in battle.
ककुदं सर्वसैन्यानां लक्ष्म सर्वधनुष्मताम्। धनञ्जयशरव्याप्तं पितरं ते महाव्रतम् ॥७-३-६॥
kakudaṃ sarvasainyānāṃ lakṣma sarvadhanuṣmatām। dhanañjayaśaravyāptaṃ pitaraṃ te mahāvratam ॥7-3-6॥

(The summit of all armies, the mark of all archers, pervaded by Arjuna's arrows, your father of great vow.)
Your father, the pinnacle of all armies and the mark of all archers, was pervaded by Arjuna's arrows and was a man of great vows.
तं वीरशयने वीरं शयानं पुरुषर्षभम्। भीष्ममाधिरथिर्दृष्ट्वा भरतानाममध्यमम् ॥७-३-७॥
taṁ vīraśayane vīraṁ śayānaṁ puruṣarṣabham। bhīṣmamādhirathirdṛṣṭvā bharatānāmamadhyamam ॥7-3-7॥

(Seeing him, the heroic bull among men, Bhishma, lying on the hero's bed, Karna, the middle one of the Bharatas.)
Karna, seeing Bhishma, the heroic bull among men, lying on the hero's bed, felt a deep sense of respect and admiration for the elder of the Bharatas.
अवतीर्य रथादार्तो बाष्पव्याकुलिताक्षरम्। अभिवाद्याञ्जलिं बद्ध्वा वन्दमानोऽभ्यभाषत ॥७-३-८॥

(Having descended from the chariot, distressed, with words filled with tears, having saluted with folded hands, bowing, he spoke:)
He descended from the chariot, his words choked with tears. With folded hands, he bowed and spoke:
कर्णोऽहमस्मि भद्रं ते अद्य मा वद भारत। पुण्यया क्षेमया वाचा चक्षुषा चावलोकय ॥७-३-९॥
karṇo'hamasmi bhadraṃ te adya mā vada bhārata। puṇyayā kṣemayā vācā cakṣuṣā cāvalokaya ॥7-3-9॥

न नूनं सुकृतस्येह फलं कश्चित्समश्नुते। यत्र धर्मपरो वृद्धः शेते भुवि भवानिह ॥७-३-१०॥
na nūnaṃ sukṛtasyeha phalaṃ kaścitsamaśnute। yatra dharmaparo vṛddhaḥ śete bhuvi bhavāniha ॥7-3-10॥
[न (na) - not; नूनं (nūnam) - indeed; सुकृतस्य (sukṛtasya) - of the virtuous; इह (iha) - here; फलं (phalam) - fruit; कश्चित् (kaścit) - anyone; समश्नुते (samaśnute) - enjoys; यत्र (yatra) - where; धर्मपरः (dharmaparaḥ) - devoted to righteousness; वृद्धः (vṛddhaḥ) - old; शेते (śete) - lies; भुवि (bhuvi) - on the earth; भवान् (bhavān) - you; इह (iha) - here;]
(Indeed, no one here enjoys the fruit of virtue, where you, devoted to righteousness, lie old on the earth.)

कोशसञ्जनने मन्त्रे व्यूहप्रहरणेषु च। नाथमन्यं न पश्यामि कुरूणां कुरुसत्तम ॥७-३-११॥
kośasañjanane mantre vyūhapraharaṇeṣu ca। nāthamanyaṃ na paśyāmi kurūṇāṃ kurusattama ॥7-3-11॥
[कोश (kośa) - treasury; सञ्जनने (sañjanane) - in the creation; मन्त्रे (mantre) - in the counsel; व्यूह (vyūha) - in the formation; प्रहरणेषु (praharaṇeṣu) - in the weapons; च (ca) - and; नाथम् (nātham) - lord; अन्यं (anyaṃ) - other; न (na) - not; पश्यामि (paśyāmi) - I see; कुरूणां (kurūṇāṃ) - of the Kurus; कुरुसत्तम (kurusattama) - O best of the Kurus;]
(In the creation of treasury, in the counsel, in the formation, and in the weapons, I do not see any other lord of the Kurus, O best of the Kurus.)

बुद्ध्या विशुद्धया युक्तो यः कुरूंस्तारयेद्भयात्। योधांस्त्वमप्लवे हित्वा पितृलोकं गमिष्यसि ॥७-३-१२॥
buddhyā viśuddhayā yukto yaḥ kurūṁstārayedbhayāt। yodhāṁstvamaplave hitvā pitṛlokaṁ gamiṣyasi ॥7-3-12॥
[बुद्ध्या (buddhyā) - by intellect; विशुद्धया (viśuddhayā) - pure; युक्तः (yuktaḥ) - engaged; यः (yaḥ) - who; कुरून् (kurūn) - Kurus; तारयेत् (tārayet) - would save; भयात् (bhayāt) - from fear; योधान् (yodhān) - warriors; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अप्लवे (aplave) - without a boat; हित्वा (hitvā) - having left; पितृलोकं (pitṛlokam) - the world of the ancestors; गमिष्यसि (gamiṣyasi) - you will go;]
(By intellect pure engaged who Kurus would save from fear. Warriors you without a boat having left the world of the ancestors you will go.)
With a pure intellect, one who is engaged can save the Kurus from fear. You, having left the warriors without a boat, will go to the world of the ancestors.
अद्य प्रभृति सङ्क्रुद्धा व्याघ्रा इव मृगक्षयम्। पाण्डवा भरतश्रेष्ठ करिष्यन्ति कुरुक्षयम् ॥७-३-१३॥
adya prabhṛti saṅkruddhā vyāghrā iva mṛgakṣayam। pāṇḍavā bharataśreṣṭha kariṣyanti kurukṣayam ॥7-3-13॥
[अद्य (adya) - today; प्रभृति (prabhṛti) - from now on; सङ्क्रुद्धा (saṅkruddhā) - angry; व्याघ्रा (vyāghrā) - tigers; इव (iva) - like; मृगक्षयम् (mṛgakṣayam) - destruction of deer; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pandavas; भरतश्रेष्ठ (bharataśreṣṭha) - O best of the Bharatas; करिष्यन्ति (kariṣyanti) - will do; कुरुक्षयम् (kurukṣayam) - destruction of the Kurus;]
(Today, from now on, the Pandavas, like angry tigers, will cause the destruction of the Kurus, O best of the Bharatas, just as tigers cause the destruction of deer.)
From today onwards, the Pandavas, in their wrath, will bring about the downfall of the Kurus, much like how tigers hunt down deer, O esteemed descendant of Bharata.
अद्य गाण्डीवघोषस्य वीर्यज्ञाः सव्यसाचिनः। कुरवः सन्त्रसिष्यन्ति वज्रपाणेरिवासुराः ॥७-३-१४॥
adya gāṇḍīvaghoṣasya vīryajñāḥ savyasācinaḥ। kuravaḥ santrasiṣyanti vajrapāṇerivāsurāḥ ॥7-3-14॥
[अद्य (adya) - today; गाण्डीव (gāṇḍīva) - Gandiva; घोषस्य (ghoṣasya) - of the sound; वीर्यज्ञाः (vīryajñāḥ) - knowers of valor; सव्यसाचिनः (savyasācinaḥ) - of Arjuna; कुरवः (kuravaḥ) - the Kauravas; सन्त्रसिष्यन्ति (santrasiṣyanti) - will tremble; वज्रपाणेः (vajrapāṇeḥ) - of the thunderbolt-wielder; इव (iva) - like; असुराः (asurāḥ) - the demons;]
(Today, the knowers of valor of Arjuna, at the sound of Gandiva, the Kauravas will tremble like the demons of the thunderbolt-wielder.)
Today, the Kauravas will tremble at the sound of Gandiva, knowing the valor of Arjuna, just as the demons trembled before the thunderbolt-wielder.
अद्य गाण्डीवमुक्तानामशनीनामिव स्वनः। त्रासयिष्यति सङ्ग्रामे कुरूनन्यांश्च पार्थिवान् ॥७-३-१५॥
adya gāṇḍīvamuktānāmaśanīnāmiva svanaḥ। trāsayiṣyati saṅgrāme kurūnanyāṃśca pārthivān ॥7-3-15॥
[अद्य (adya) - today; गाण्डीवमुक्तानाम् (gāṇḍīvamuktānām) - of those released from the Gandiva bow; अशनीनाम् (aśanīnām) - of thunderbolts; इव (iva) - like; स्वनः (svanaḥ) - sound; त्रासयिष्यति (trāsayiṣyati) - will terrify; सङ्ग्रामे (saṅgrāme) - in the battle; कुरून् (kurūn) - the Kuru warriors; अन्यान् (anyān) - other; च (ca) - and; पार्थिवान् (pārthivān) - kings;]
(Today, the sound of those released from the Gandiva bow, like thunderbolts, will terrify the Kuru warriors and other kings in the battle.)
Today, the sound of arrows released from the Gandiva bow will echo like thunderbolts, striking fear into the hearts of the Kuru warriors and other kings on the battlefield.
समिद्धोऽग्निर्यथा वीर महाज्वालो द्रुमान्दहेत्। धार्तराष्ट्रान्प्रधक्ष्यन्ति तथा बाणाः किरीटिनः ॥७-३-१६॥
samiddho'gniryathā vīra mahājvālo drumāndahēt। dhārtarāṣṭrānpradhakṣyanti tathā bāṇāḥ kirīṭinaḥ ॥7-3-16॥
[समिद्धः (samiddhaḥ) - kindled; अग्निः (agniḥ) - fire; यथा (yathā) - as; वीर (vīra) - hero; महाज्वालः (mahājvālaḥ) - great flame; द्रुमान् (drumān) - trees; दहेत् (dahet) - would burn; धार्तराष्ट्रान् (dhārtarāṣṭrān) - Dhartarashtras; प्रधक्ष्यन्ति (pradhakṣyanti) - will burn; तथा (tathā) - so; बाणाः (bāṇāḥ) - arrows; किरीटिनः (kirīṭinaḥ) - of the crowned one;]
(As a kindled fire with great flames would burn trees, so will the arrows of the crowned one burn the Dhartarashtras.)
O hero, just as a kindled fire with great flames would burn trees, so will the arrows of Arjuna, the crowned one, burn the sons of Dhritarashtra.
येन येन प्रसरतो वाय्वग्नी सहितौ वने। तेन तेन प्रदहतो भगवन्तौ यदिच्छतः ॥७-३-१७॥
yena yena prasarato vāyvagnī sahitau vane। tena tena pradahato bhagavantau yadicchataḥ ॥7-3-17॥

O Lords, as you wish, the wind and fire spread together in the forest, burning everything in their path.
यादृशोऽग्निः समिद्धो हि तादृक्पार्थो न संशयः। यथा वायुर्नरव्याघ्र तथा कृष्णो न संशयः ॥७-३-१८॥
yādṛśo'gn iḥ samiddho hi tādṛkpārtho na sanśayaḥ। yathā vāyurnaravyāghra tathā kṛṣṇo na sanśayaḥ ॥7-3-18॥
[यादृशः (yādṛśaḥ) - as; अग्निः (agniḥ) - fire; समिद्धः (samiddhaḥ) - kindled; हि (hi) - indeed; तादृक् (tādṛk) - so; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - Arjuna; न (na) - not; संशयः (sanśayaḥ) - doubt; यथा (yathā) - as; वायुः (vāyuḥ) - wind; नरव्याघ्र (naravyāghra) - tiger among men; तथा (tathā) - so; कृष्णः (kṛṣṇaḥ) - Krishna; न (na) - not; संशयः (sanśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(As the fire is kindled, so is Arjuna, without a doubt. As the wind, O tiger among men, so is Krishna, without a doubt.)
Just as a kindled fire is powerful, so is Arjuna, without any doubt. Similarly, just as the wind is mighty, so is Krishna, without any doubt.
नदतः पाञ्चजन्यस्य रसतो गाण्डिवस्य च। श्रुत्वा सर्वाणि सैन्यानि त्रासं यास्यन्ति भारत ॥७-३-१९॥
nadataḥ pāñcajanyasya rasato gāṇḍivasya ca। śrutvā sarvāṇi sainyāni trāsaṃ yāsyanti bhārata ॥7-3-19॥
[नदतः (nadataḥ) - sounding; पाञ्चजन्यस्य (pāñcajanyasya) - of Pāñcajanya; रसतः (rasataḥ) - resounding; गाण्डिवस्य (gāṇḍivasya) - of Gāṇḍiva; च (ca) - and; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; सर्वाणि (sarvāṇi) - all; सैन्यानि (sainyāni) - armies; त्रासं (trāsaṃ) - fear; यास्यन्ति (yāsyanti) - will go; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(The sounding of Pāñcajanya and the resounding of Gāṇḍiva, having heard all the armies will go to fear, O Bhārata.)
Upon hearing the sound of Pāñcajanya and the twang of Gāṇḍiva, all the armies will be struck with fear, O Bhārata.
कपिध्वजस्य चोत्पाते रथस्यामित्रकर्शिनः। शब्दं सोढुं न शक्ष्यन्ति त्वामृते वीर पार्थिवाः ॥७-३-२०॥
kapidhvajasya cotpāte rathasyāmitrakarśinaḥ। śabdaṃ soḍhuṃ na śakṣyanti tvāmṛte vīra pārthivāḥ ॥7-3-20॥
[कपि (kapi) - monkey; ध्वजस्य (dhvajasya) - banner's; च (ca) - and; उत्पाते (utpāte) - in the flight; रथस्य (rathasya) - of the chariot; अमित्र (amitra) - enemy; कर्शिनः (karśinaḥ) - tormentor; शब्दं (śabdaṃ) - sound; सोढुं (soḍhuṃ) - to bear; न (na) - not; शक्ष्यन्ति (śakṣyanti) - will be able; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; ऋते (ṛte) - except; वीर (vīra) - hero; पार्थिवाः (pārthivāḥ) - kings;]
(The kings will not be able to bear the sound of the flight of the chariot with the monkey banner, except you, O hero.)
O hero, except for you, the kings will not be able to withstand the sound of the chariot's flight with the monkey banner, tormentor of enemies.
को ह्यर्जुनं रणे योद्धुं त्वदन्यः पार्थिवोऽर्हति। यस्य दिव्यानि कर्माणि प्रवदन्ति मनीषिणः ॥७-३-२१॥
ko hyarjunaṃ raṇe yoddhuṃ tvadanyaḥ pārthivo'rhati। yasya divyāni karmāṇi pravadanti manīṣiṇaḥ ॥7-3-21॥
[कः (kaḥ) - who; हि (hi) - indeed; अर्जुनम् (arjunam) - Arjuna; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; योद्धुम् (yoddhum) - to fight; त्वत् (tvad) - than you; अन्यः (anyaḥ) - other; पार्थिवः (pārthivaḥ) - prince; अर्हति (arhati) - is worthy; यस्य (yasya) - whose; दिव्यानि (divyāni) - divine; कर्माणि (karmāṇi) - deeds; प्रवदन्ति (pravadanti) - speak of; मनीषिणः (manīṣiṇaḥ) - wise men;]
(Who indeed is worthy to fight Arjuna in battle, other than you, the prince, whose divine deeds the wise men speak of?)
Who else but you, the prince, is worthy to fight Arjuna in battle, whose divine deeds are spoken of by the wise men?
अमानुषश्च सङ्ग्रामस्त्र्यम्बकेन च धीमतः। तस्माच्चैव वरः प्राप्तो दुष्प्रापश्चाकृतात्मभिः ॥७-३-२२॥
amānuṣaśca saṅgrāmastryambakena ca dhīmataḥ। tasmāccaiva varaḥ prāpto duṣprāpaścākṛtātmabhiḥ ॥7-3-22॥

(The superhuman battle was fought by the wise Tryambaka. Therefore, indeed, a boon, difficult to obtain, was obtained by the unrefined.)
A superhuman battle was fought by the wise Tryambaka (Shiva). As a result, a boon that is difficult to obtain was granted to those who are unrefined.
