Pancharatra and Core: Kripa advises Duryodhana to make peace with Yudhishthira, so that he will forgive and appoint him as the king for half the kingdom.

न युद्धधर्माच्छ्रेयान्वै पन्था राजेन्द्र विद्यते। यं समाश्रित्य युध्यन्ते क्षत्रियाः क्षत्रियर्षभ ॥९-३-१०॥
na yuddhadharmācchreyān vai panthā rājendra vidyate। yaṃ samāśritya yudhyante kṣatriyāḥ kṣatriyarṣabha ॥9-3-10॥

वधे चैव परो धर्मस्तथाधर्मः पलायने। ते स्म घोरां समापन्ना जीविकां जीवितार्थिनः ॥९-३-१२॥

(In killing, indeed, superior is duty, and also wrong in fleeing. They indeed engaged in terrible livelihood desiring life.)

तत्र त्वां प्रतिवक्ष्यामि किञ्चिदेव हितं वचः। हते भीष्मे च द्रोणे च कर्णे चैव महारथे ॥९-३-१३॥

(There, I will speak to you some beneficial words indeed, with Bhishma, Drona, and Karna, the great chariot-warriors, slain.)

जयद्रथे च निहते तव भ्रातृषु चानघ। लक्ष्मणे तव पुत्रे च किं शेषं पर्युपास्महे ॥९-३-१४॥
jayadrathe ca nihate tava bhrātṛṣu cānagha। lakṣmaṇe tava putre ca kiṃ śeṣaṃ paryupāsmahe ॥9-3-14॥

(In Jayadratha and your brothers being slain, O sinless one, in Lakshmana, your son, and what remains do we wait for?)
O sinless one, with Jayadratha and your brothers slain, and your son Lakshmana gone, what is left for us to wait for?
येषु भारं समासज्य राज्ये मतिमकुर्महि। ते सन्त्यज्य तनूर्याताः शूरा ब्रह्मविदां गतिम् ॥९-३-१५॥
yeṣu bhāraṃ samāsajya rājye matimakurmahi। te santyajya tanūryātāḥ śūrā brahmavidāṃ gatim ॥9-3-15॥
[येषु (yeṣu) - in whom; भारं (bhāram) - burden; समासज्य (samāsajya) - having placed; राज्ये (rājye) - in the kingdom; मतिमकुर्महि (matimakurmahi) - we placed our trust; ते (te) - they; सन्त्यज्य (santyajya) - having abandoned; तनूः (tanūḥ) - bodies; याताः (yātāḥ) - have gone; शूराः (śūrāḥ) - heroes; ब्रह्मविदां (brahmavidāṃ) - of the knowers of Brahman; गतिम् (gatim) - the path;]
(In whom we placed the burden and trust in the kingdom, they, having abandoned their bodies, have gone to the path of the knowers of Brahman, the heroes.)
The heroes, in whom we placed our trust and burden in the kingdom, have left their bodies and attained the path of the knowers of Brahman.
वयं त्विह विनाभूता गुणवद्भिर्महारथैः। कृपणं वर्तयिष्याम पातयित्वा नृपान्बहून् ॥९-३-१६॥
vayaṁ tviha vinābhūtā guṇavadbhirmahārathaiḥ। kṛpaṇaṁ vartayiṣyāma pātayitvā nṛpānbahūn ॥9-3-16॥
[वयम् (vayam) - we; तु (tu) - but; इह (iha) - here; विनाभूताः (vinābhūtāḥ) - deprived; गुणवद्भिः (guṇavadbhiḥ) - by the virtuous; महारथैः (mahārathaiḥ) - by great charioteers; कृपणम् (kṛpaṇam) - miserably; वर्तयिष्याम (vartayiṣyāma) - we shall live; पातयित्वा (pātayitvā) - having killed; नृपान् (nṛpān) - kings; बहून् (bahūn) - many;]
(We, here, deprived of the virtuous great charioteers, shall live miserably, having killed many kings.)
We find ourselves here without the support of the virtuous great charioteers, and thus, having slain many kings, we shall live in misery.
सर्वैरपि च जीवद्भिर्बीभत्सुरपराजितः। कृष्णनेत्रो महाबाहुर्देवैरपि दुरासदः ॥९-३-१७॥
sarvairapi ca jīvadbhirbībhatsuraparājitaḥ। kṛṣṇanetro mahābāhurdevairapi durāsadaḥ ॥9-3-17॥
[सर्वैः (sarvaiḥ) - by all; अपि (api) - even; च (ca) - and; जीवद्भिः (jīvadbhiḥ) - by the living; बीभत्सुः (bībhatsuḥ) - fearsome; अपराजितः (aparājitaḥ) - undefeated; कृष्णनेत्रः (kṛṣṇanetraḥ) - dark-eyed; महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - mighty-armed; देवैः (devaiḥ) - by the gods; अपि (api) - even; दुरासदः (durāsadaḥ) - difficult to approach;]
(By all, even by the living, fearsome and undefeated; dark-eyed, mighty-armed, even by the gods, difficult to approach.)

इन्द्रकार्मुकवज्राभमिन्द्रकेतुमिवोच्छ्रितम्। वानरं केतुमासाद्य सञ्चचाल महाचमूः ॥९-३-१८॥
indrakārmukavajrābhamindraketumivocchritam। vānaraṃ ketumāsādya sañcacāla mahācamūḥ ॥9-3-18॥
[इन्द्र (indra) - Indra; कार्मुक (kārmuka) - bow; वज्र (vajra) - thunderbolt; आभम् (ābham) - resembling; इन्द्र (indra) - Indra; केतुम् (ketum) - banner; इव (iva) - like; उच्छ्रितम् (ucchritam) - raised; वानरम् (vānaram) - monkey; केतुम् (ketum) - banner; आसाद्य (āsādya) - having reached; सञ्चचाल (sañcacāla) - moved; महाचमूः (mahācamūḥ) - great army;]
(The great army moved, having reached the monkey banner, raised like the banner of Indra, resembling the bow and thunderbolt of Indra.)

सिंहनादेन भीमस्य पाञ्चजन्यस्वनेन च। गाण्डीवस्य च निर्घोषात्संहृष्यन्ति मनांसि नः ॥९-३-१९॥

चरन्तीव महाविद्युन्मुष्णन्ति नयनप्रभाम्। अलातमिव चाविद्धं गाण्डीवं समदृश्यत ॥९-३-२०॥

(Moving as if great lightning, stealing the eye's light. Like a pierced firebrand, the Gandiva bow appeared.)

जाम्बूनदविचित्रं च धूयमानं महद्धनुः। दृश्यते दिक्षु सर्वासु विद्युदभ्रघनेष्विव ॥९-३-२१॥
jāmbūnadavicitraṃ ca dhūyamānaṃ mahaddhanuḥ। dṛśyate dikṣu sarvāsu vidyudabhraghaneṣviva ॥9-3-21॥
[जाम्बूनदविचित्रं (jāmbūnadavicitraṃ) - decorated with gold; च (ca) - and; धूयमानं (dhūyamānaṃ) - being shaken; महद्धनुः (mahaddhanuḥ) - great bow; दृश्यते (dṛśyate) - is seen; दिक्षु (dikṣu) - in all directions; सर्वासु (sarvāsu) - everywhere; विद्युदभ्रघनेषु (vidyudabhra-ghaneṣu) - among clouds with lightning; इव (iva) - like;]
(A great bow, decorated with gold and being shaken, is seen in all directions, everywhere, like among clouds with lightning.)

उह्यमानश्च कृष्णेन वायुनेव बलाहकः। तावकं तद्बलं राजन्नर्जुनोऽस्त्रविदां वरः ॥ गहनं शिशिरे कक्षं ददाहाग्निरिवोत्थितः ॥९-३-२२॥
uhyamānaśca kṛṣṇena vāyuneva balāhakaḥ। tāvakaṃ tadbalaṃ rājannarjuno'stravidāṃ varaḥ ॥ gahanaṃ śiśire kakṣaṃ dadāhāgnirivotthitaḥ ॥9-3-22॥

O lord, I think it is proper for us, who are deprived of our own strength, to make peace here with the Pandavas.
न जानीते हि यः श्रेयः श्रेयसश्चावमन्यते। स क्षिप्रं भ्रश्यते राज्यान्न च श्रेयोऽनुविन्दति ॥९-३-४४॥
na jānīte hi yaḥ śreyaḥ śreyasaścāvamanyate। sa kṣipraṁ bhraśyate rājyānna ca śreyo'nuvindati ॥9-3-44॥
[न (na) - not; जानीते (jānīte) - knows; हि (hi) - indeed; यः (yaḥ) - who; श्रेयः (śreyaḥ) - better; श्रेयसः (śreyasaḥ) - of the better; च (ca) - and; अवमन्यते (avamanyate) - despises; सः (saḥ) - he; क्षिप्रं (kṣipraṁ) - quickly; भ्रश्यते (bhraśyate) - falls; राज्यात् (rājyāt) - from the kingdom; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; श्रेयः (śreyaḥ) - better; अनुविन्दति (anuvindati) - obtains;]
(He who indeed does not know what is better and despises what is better, quickly falls from the kingdom and does not obtain what is better.)
He who does not recognize what is truly beneficial and looks down upon it will soon lose his kingdom and fail to achieve true prosperity.
प्रणिपत्य हि राजानं राज्यं यदि लभेमहि। श्रेयः स्यान्न तु मौढ्येन राजन्गन्तुं पराभवम् ॥९-३-४५॥
praṇipatya hi rājānaṃ rājyaṃ yadi labhemahi। śreyaḥ syānna tu mauḍhyena rājangantuṃ parābhavam ॥9-3-45॥

(Having bowed to the king, indeed, if we may obtain the kingdom, it would be better; but not by foolishness, O king, to go to defeat.)
"Indeed, having bowed to the king, it would be better if we could obtain the kingdom; but not through foolishness, O king, to go towards defeat."
वैचित्रवीर्यवचनात्कृपाशीलो युधिष्ठिरः। विनियुञ्जीत राज्ये त्वां गोविन्दवचनेन च ॥९-३-४६॥
vaicitravīryavacanātkṛpāśīlo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। viniyuñjīta rājye tvāṃ govindavacanena ca ॥9-3-46॥

Yudhishthira, known for his compassionate nature, should appoint you to the kingdom following the counsel of Vaicitravīrya and Govinda.
यद्ब्रूयाद्धि हृषीकेशो राजानमपराजितम्। अर्जुनं भीमसेनं च सर्वं कुर्युरसंशयम् ॥९-३-४७॥
yadbrūyāddhi hṛṣīkeśo rājānamaparājitam। arjunaṃ bhīmasenaṃ ca sarvaṃ kuryurasaṃśayam ॥9-3-47॥

(If indeed Hṛṣīkeśa should say to the unconquered king, Arjuna and Bhīmasena would do all without doubt.)
If Hṛṣīkeśa were to instruct the unconquered king, Arjuna and Bhīmasena would undoubtedly comply with everything.
नातिक्रमिष्यते कृष्णो वचनं कौरवस्य ह। धृतराष्ट्रस्य मन्येऽहं नापि कृष्णस्य पाण्डवः ॥९-३-४८॥
nātikramiṣyate kṛṣṇo vacanaṃ kauravasya ha। dhṛtarāṣṭrasya manye'haṃ nāpi kṛṣṇasya pāṇḍavaḥ ॥9-3-48॥
[न (na) - not; अतिक्रमिष्यते (atikramiṣyate) - transgress; कृष्णः (kṛṣṇaḥ) - Krishna; वचनम् (vacanam) - word; कौरवस्य (kauravasya) - of Kaurava; ह (ha) - indeed; धृतराष्ट्रस्य (dhṛtarāṣṭrasya) - of Dhritarashtra; मन् (man) - think; अहम् (aham) - I; न (na) - not; अपि (api) - also; कृष्णस्य (kṛṣṇasya) - of Krishna; पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - Pandava;]
(Krishna will not transgress the word of Kaurava. I think neither will the Pandava transgress the word of Dhritarashtra nor of Krishna.)
Krishna will not go against the words of the Kaurava. I believe that the Pandava will not go against the words of either Dhritarashtra or Krishna.
एतत्क्षममहं मन्ये तव पार्थैरविग्रहम्। न त्वा ब्रवीमि कार्पण्यान्न प्राणपरिरक्षणात् ॥ पथ्यं राजन्ब्रवीमि त्वां तत्परासुः स्मरिष्यसि ॥९-३-४९॥
etat kṣamam ahaṃ manye tava pārthair avigraham। na tvā bravīmi kārpaṇyān na prāṇaparirakṣaṇāt॥ pathyaṃ rājan bravīmi tvāṃ tat parāsuḥ smariṣyasi॥9-3-49॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; क्षमम् (kṣamam) - proper; अहम् (aham) - I; मन्ये (manye) - think; तव (tava) - your; पार्थैः (pārthaiḥ) - by the sons of Pṛthā; अविग्रहम् (avigraham) - non-conflict; न (na) - not; त्वा (tvā) - you; ब्रवीमि (bravīmi) - I say; कार्पण्यात् (kārpaṇyāt) - out of pity; न (na) - not; प्राणपरिरक्षणात् (prāṇaparirakṣaṇāt) - for the protection of life; पथ्यम् (pathyam) - beneficial; राजन् (rājan) - O king; ब्रवीमि (bravīmi) - I say; त्वाम् (tvām) - to you; तत् (tat) - that; परासुः (parāsuḥ) - when dead; स्मरिष्यसि (smariṣyasi) - you will remember;]
(I think this non-conflict with the sons of Pṛthā is proper for you. I do not say this out of pity or for the protection of life. I say what is beneficial to you, O king, and you will remember that when dead.)
I believe that avoiding conflict with the sons of Pṛthā is wise for you. I am not saying this out of pity or to save lives. I am advising you for your own good, O king, and you will remember this advice when you are no longer alive.
इति वृद्धो विलप्यैतत्कृपः शारद्वतो वचः। दीर्घमुष्णं च निःश्वस्य शुशोच च मुमोह च ॥९-३-५०॥
iti vṛddho vilapyaitatkṛpaḥ śāradvato vacaḥ। dīrghamuṣṇaṃ ca niḥśvasya śuśoca ca mumoha ca ॥9-3-50॥

(Thus, the old man Kṛpa, son of Śaradvat, lamenting these words, sighed long and hot, grieved and became unconscious.)
