Pancharatra and Core: Duryodhana rejects Kripa's proposal, as he thinks he will go to heaven and enjoy with the ladies after death.

एवमुक्तस्ततो राजा गौतमेन यशस्विना। निःश्वस्य दीर्घमुष्णं च तूष्णीमासीद्विशां पते ॥९-४-१॥
evamuktastato rājā gautamena yaśasvinā। niḥśvasya dīrghamuṣṇaṃ ca tūṣṇīmāsīdviśāṃ pate ॥9-4-1॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - spoken; ततः (tataḥ) - then; राजा (rājā) - king; गौतमेन (gautamena) - by Gautama; यशस्विना (yaśasvinā) - illustrious; निःश्वस्य (niḥśvasya) - sighing; दीर्घम् (dīrgham) - long; उष्णम् (uṣṇam) - warm; च (ca) - and; तूष्णीम् (tūṣṇīm) - silent; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; विशाम् (viśām) - of the people; पते (pate) - lord;]
(Thus spoken, then the king, by the illustrious Gautama, sighing long and warm, was silent, O lord of the people.)
After being addressed in this way by the illustrious Gautama, the king sighed deeply and warmly, and remained silent, O lord of the people.
ततो मुहूर्तं स ध्यात्वा धार्तराष्ट्रो महामनाः। कृपं शारद्वतं वाक्यमित्युवाच परन्तपः ॥९-४-२॥
tato muhūrtaṃ sa dhyātvā dhārtarāṣṭro mahāmanāḥ। kṛpaṃ śāradvataṃ vākyamityuvāca parantapaḥ ॥9-4-2॥

(Then, having meditated for a moment, the great-minded son of Dhritarashtra said these words to Kripa, the son of Sharadvata.)
Then, after meditating for a moment, the wise son of Dhritarashtra addressed Kripa, the son of Sharadvata, with these words.
यत्किञ्चित्सुहृदा वाच्यं तत्सर्वं श्रावितो ह्यहम्। कृतं च भवता सर्वं प्राणान्सन्त्यज्य युध्यता ॥९-४-३॥
yatkiñcitsuhr̥dā vācyaṃ tatsarvaṃ śrāvito hyaham। kṛtaṃ ca bhavatā sarvaṃ prāṇānsantyajya yudhyatā ॥9-4-3॥

(Whatever was to be said by a friend, I have indeed been informed of all that. And all has been done by you, having abandoned lives, fighting.)
I have been informed of everything that was to be said by a friend. You have done everything, even abandoning lives, to fight.
गाहमानमनीकानि युध्यमानं महारथैः। पाण्डवैरतितेजोभिर्लोकस्त्वामनुदृष्टवान् ॥९-४-४॥
gāhamānam anīkāni yudhyamānaṃ mahārathaiḥ। pāṇḍavair atitejobhir lokas tvām anudṛṣṭavān ॥9-4-4॥
[गाहमानम् (gāhamānam) - immersed; अनीकानि (anīkāni) - in the armies; युध्यमानम् (yudhyamānam) - fighting; महारथैः (mahārathaiḥ) - with great charioteers; पाण्डवैः (pāṇḍavaiḥ) - by the Pāṇḍavas; अतितेजोभिः (atitejobhiḥ) - with great prowess; लोकः (lokaḥ) - the world; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; अनुदृष्टवान् (anudṛṣṭavān) - has seen;]
(The world has seen you immersed in the armies, fighting with great charioteers, by the Pāṇḍavas with great prowess.)
The world witnessed you deeply engaged in the battle formations, fighting alongside the mighty charioteers, as the Pāṇḍavas, with their extraordinary prowess, observed you.
सुहृदा यदिदं वाच्यं भवता श्रावितो ह्यहम्। न मां प्रीणाति तत्सर्वं मुमूर्षोरिव भेषजम् ॥९-४-५॥
suhṛdā yadidaṃ vācyaṃ bhavatā śrāvito hyaham। na māṃ prīṇāti tatsarvaṃ mumūrṣoriva bheṣajam ॥9-4-5॥

(By a friend, which is to be spoken, I was indeed made to hear by you. That does not please me at all, like medicine to a dying person.)
I was made to hear by you, my friend, what is to be spoken. However, none of it pleases me, just like medicine does not please a dying person.
हेतुकारणसंयुक्तं हितं वचनमुत्तमम्। उच्यमानं महाबाहो न मे विप्राग्र्य रोचते ॥९-४-६॥
hetukāraṇasaṁyuktaṁ hitaṁ vacanamuttamam। ucyamānaṁ mahābāho na me viprāgrya rocate ॥9-4-6॥

राज्याद्विनिकृतोऽस्माभिः कथं सोऽस्मासु विश्वसेत्। अक्षद्यूते च नृपतिर्जितोऽस्माभिर्महाधनः ॥ स कथं मम वाक्यानि श्रद्दध्याद्भूय एव तु ॥९-४-७॥
rājyādvinikṛto'smābhiḥ kathaṃ so'smāsu viśvaset। akṣadyūte ca nṛpatirjito'smābhirmahādhanaḥ ॥ sa kathaṃ mama vākyāni śraddadhyādbhūya eva tu ॥9-4-7॥

(Deprived of the kingdom by us, how can he trust us? And in the dice game, the king, defeated by us, with great wealth. How can he believe my words again, indeed?)
Having been deprived of his kingdom by us, how can he trust us? Moreover, the king, who was defeated by us in the dice game and lost great wealth, how can he believe my words again?
तथा दौत्येन सम्प्राप्तः कृष्णः पार्थहिते रतः। प्रलब्धश्च हृषीकेशस्तच्च कर्म विरोधितम् ॥ स च मे वचनं ब्रह्मन्कथमेवाभिमंस्यते ॥९-४-८॥
tathā dautyena samprāptaḥ kṛṣṇaḥ pārthahite rataḥ। pralabdhaśca hṛṣīkeśastacca karma virodhitam ॥ sa ca me vacanaṃ brahmankathamevābhimaṃsyate ॥9-4-8॥

(Thus, Krishna, who arrived by the duty of a messenger, engaged in the welfare of the son of Pritha, was insulted, and Hrishikesha opposed that action. And how, O Brahman, will my word indeed be considered?)
Thus, Krishna, acting as a messenger, came for the welfare of the Pandavas but was insulted, and Hrishikesha opposed this action. O Brahman, how will my words be regarded?
विललाप हि यत्कृष्णा सभामध्ये समेयुषी। न तन्मर्षयते कृष्णो न राज्यहरणं तथा ॥९-४-९॥
vilalāpa hi yatkṛṣṇā sabhāmadhye sameyuṣī। na tanmarṣayate kṛṣṇo na rājyaharaṇaṃ tathā ॥9-4-9॥
[विललाप (vilalāpa) - lamented; हि (hi) - indeed; यत् (yat) - that; कृष्णा (kṛṣṇā) - Kṛṣṇā; सभामध्ये (sabhāmadhye) - in the assembly; समेयुषी (sameyuṣī) - present; न (na) - not; तत् (tat) - that; मर्षयते (marṣayate) - forgives; कृष्णः (kṛṣṇaḥ) - Kṛṣṇa; न (na) - not; राज्यहरणम् (rājyaharaṇam) - kingdom's seizure; तथा (tathā) - also;]
(Indeed, Kṛṣṇā lamented in the assembly; Kṛṣṇa does not forgive that, nor the seizure of the kingdom.)

एकप्राणावुभौ कृष्णावन्योन्यं प्रति संहतौ। पुरा यच्छ्रुतमेवासीदद्य पश्यामि तत्प्रभो ॥९-४-१०॥
ekaprāṇāvubhau kṛṣṇāvanyonyaṃ prati saṃhatau। purā yacchrutamevāsīdadya paśyāmi tatprabho ॥9-4-10॥

(Both Krishnas, one-souled, united towards each other. Formerly, what was heard, indeed, today I see that, O lord.)
Both Krishnas, who are like one soul, are united towards each other. What was once only heard of, today I see it, O lord.
स्वस्रीयं च हतं श्रुत्वा दुःखं स्वपिति केशवः। कृतागसो वयं तस्य स मदर्थं कथं क्षमेत् ॥९-४-११॥
svasrīyaṃ ca hataṃ śrutvā duḥkhaṃ svapiti keśavaḥ। kṛtāgaso vayaṃ tasya sa madarthaṃ kathaṃ kṣamet ॥9-4-11॥
[स्वस्रीयम् (svasrīyam) - sister's son; च (ca) - and; हतम् (hatam) - killed; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; दुःखम् (duḥkham) - grief; स्वपिति (svapiti) - sleeps; केशवः (keśavaḥ) - Keshava; कृतागसः (kṛtāgasaḥ) - having committed sins; वयम् (vayam) - we; तस्य (tasya) - his; सः (saḥ) - he; मदर्थम् (madartham) - for my sake; कथम् (katham) - how; क्षमेत् (kṣamet) - forgive;]
(Having heard that his sister's son was killed, Keshava sleeps in grief. How can he forgive us who have committed sins for my sake?)
Keshava, upon hearing of the death of his sister's son, is engulfed in sorrow and sleeps. How can he forgive us for the sins committed for my sake?
अभिमन्योर्विनाशेन न शर्म लभतेऽर्जुनः। स कथं मद्धिते यत्नं प्रकरिष्यति याचितः ॥९-४-१२॥
abhimanyorvināśena na śarma labhate'rjunaḥ। sa kathaṁ maddhite yatnaṁ prakariṣyati yācitaḥ ॥9-4-12॥
[अभिमन्योः (abhimanyoḥ) - of Abhimanyu; विनाशेन (vināśena) - by the destruction; न (na) - not; शर्म (śarma) - peace; लभते (labhate) - obtains; अर्जुनः (arjunaḥ) - Arjuna; स (sa) - he; कथं (kathaṁ) - how; मद्धिते (maddhite) - for my benefit; यत्नं (yatnaṁ) - effort; प्रकरिष्यति (prakariṣyati) - will make; याचितः (yācitaḥ) - being requested;]
(Arjuna does not obtain peace by the destruction of Abhimanyu. How will he make an effort for my benefit when requested?)
Arjuna is unable to find peace after Abhimanyu's death. How will he, when asked, make an effort for my benefit?
मध्यमः पाण्डवस्तीक्ष्णो भीमसेनो महाबलः। प्रतिज्ञातं च तेनोग्रं स भज्येत न संनमेत् ॥९-४-१३॥
madhyamaḥ pāṇḍavastīkṣṇo bhīmaseno mahābalaḥ। pratijñātaṃ ca tenograṃ sa bhajyeta na saṃnamet ॥9-4-13॥
[मध्यमः (madhyamaḥ) - middle; पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - Pāṇḍava; तीक्ष्णः (tīkṣṇaḥ) - sharp; भीमसेनः (bhīmasenaḥ) - Bhīmasena; महाबलः (mahābalaḥ) - mighty; प्रतिज्ञातम् (pratijñātam) - promised; च (ca) - and; तेन (tena) - by him; उग्रं (ugraṃ) - fierce; सः (saḥ) - he; भज्येत (bhajyeta) - would break; न (na) - not; संनमेत् (saṃnamet) - would bend;]
(The middle Pāṇḍava, sharp Bhīmasena, mighty, promised by him fiercely, he would break, not bend.)
The middle Pāṇḍava, Bhīmasena, known for his sharpness and might, had fiercely promised that he would break but never bend.
उभौ तौ बद्धनिस्त्रिंशावुभौ चाबद्धकङ्कटौ। कृतवैरावुभौ वीरौ यमावपि यमोपमौ ॥९-४-१४॥
ubhau tau baddhanistriṁśāvubhau cābaddhakaṅkaṭau। kṛtavairāvubhau vīrau yamāvapi yamopamau ॥9-4-14॥
[उभौ (ubhau) - both; तौ (tau) - those two; बद्धनिस्त्रिंशौ (baddhanistriṁśau) - with swords drawn; उभौ (ubhau) - both; च (ca) - and; अबद्धकङ्कटौ (abaddhakaṅkaṭau) - with armor untied; कृतवैरौ (kṛtavairau) - having enmity; उभौ (ubhau) - both; वीरौ (vīrau) - heroes; यमौ (yamau) - Yama; अपि (api) - also; यमोपमौ (yamopamau) - like Yama;]
(Both those two with swords drawn, both with armor untied, having enmity, both heroes, like Yama also.)
Both of them, with their swords drawn and armor untied, stood as fierce warriors, resembling Yama, the god of death, in their enmity.
धृष्टद्युम्नः शिखण्डी च कृतवैरौ मया सह। तौ कथं मद्धिते यत्नं प्रकुर्यातां द्विजोत्तम ॥९-४-१५॥
dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ śikhaṇḍī ca kṛtavairau mayā saha। tau kathaṃ maddhite yatnaṃ prakuryātāṃ dvijottama ॥9-4-15॥
[धृष्टद्युम्नः (dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ) - Dhṛṣṭadyumna; शिखण्डी (śikhaṇḍī) - Śikhaṇḍī; च (ca) - and; कृतवैरौ (kṛtavairau) - having enmity; मया (mayā) - with me; सह (saha) - together; तौ (tau) - they; कथं (kathaṃ) - how; मद्धिते (maddhite) - for my benefit; यत्नं (yatnaṃ) - effort; प्रकुर्यातां (prakuryātāṃ) - would make; द्विजोत्तम (dvijottama) - O best of the twice-born;]
(Dhṛṣṭadyumna and Śikhaṇḍī, having enmity with me, how would they make an effort for my benefit, O best of the twice-born?)

दुःशासनेन यत्कृष्णा एकवस्त्रा रजस्वला। परिक्लिष्टा सभामध्ये सर्वलोकस्य पश्यतः ॥९-४-१६॥
duḥśāsanena yatkṛṣṇā ekavastrā rajasvalā। parikliṣṭā sabhāmadhye sarvalokasya paśyataḥ ॥9-4-16॥
[दुःशासनेन (duḥśāsanena) - by Duhshasana; यत् (yat) - that; कृष्णा (kṛṣṇā) - Draupadi; एकवस्त्रा (ekavastrā) - single-clothed; रजस्वला (rajasvalā) - in her period; परिक्लिष्टा (parikliṣṭā) - distressed; सभामध्ये (sabhāmadhye) - in the assembly; सर्वलोकस्य (sarvalokasya) - of all people; पश्यतः (paśyataḥ) - watching;]
(By Duhshasana, Draupadi, single-clothed and in her period, was distressed in the assembly while all people were watching.)
Duhshasana humiliated Draupadi, who was single-clothed and in her period, in the assembly in front of everyone.
तथा विवसनां दीनां स्मरन्त्यद्यापि पाण्डवाः। न निवारयितुं शक्याः सङ्ग्रामात्ते परन्तपाः ॥९-४-१७॥
tathā vivasanāṃ dīnāṃ smarantyadyāpi pāṇḍavāḥ। na nivārayituṃ śakyāḥ saṅgrāmātte parantapāḥ ॥9-4-17॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; विवसनाम् (vivasanām) - disrobed; दीनाम् (dīnām) - distressed; स्मरन्ति (smaranti) - remember; अद्यापि (adyāpi) - even today; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pandavas; न (na) - not; निवारयितुम् (nivārayitum) - to prevent; शक्याः (śakyāḥ) - able; सङ्ग्रामात् (saṅgrāmāt) - from battle; ते (te) - they; परन्तपाः (parantapāḥ) - O subduer of enemies;]
(Thus, the Pandavas, even today, remember the distressed and disrobed, and they are not able to prevent themselves from battle, O subduer of enemies.)

yadā ca draupadī kṛṣṇā madvināśāya duḥkhitā। ugraṃ tepe tapaḥ kṛṣṇā bhartṝṇāmarthasiddhaye ॥ sthaṇḍile nityadā śete yāvadvairasya yātanā ॥9-4-18॥

(When Draupadi, sorrowful for my destruction, performed intense penance, Krishna, for the attainment of her husbands' purpose, always lies on the bare ground as long as the suffering of enmity lasts.)

[निक्षिप्य (nikṣipya) - having abandoned; मानं (mānaṃ) - pride; दर्पं (darpaṃ) - arrogance; च (ca) - and; वासुदेवसहोदरा (vāsudevasahodarā) - sister of Vasudeva; कृष्णायाः (kṛṣṇāyāḥ) - to Krishna; प्रेष्यवत् (preṣyavat) - like a servant; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; शुश्रूषां (śuśrūṣāṃ) - service; कुरुते (kurute) - does; सदा (sadā) - always;]
(Having abandoned pride and arrogance, the sister of Vasudeva, having become like a servant to Krishna, always does service.)
The sister of Vasudeva, having set aside her pride and arrogance, serves Krishna like a devoted servant at all times.
इति सर्वं समुन्नद्धं न निर्वाति कथञ्चन। अभिमन्योर्विनाशेन स सन्धेयः कथं मया ॥९-४-२०॥
iti sarvaṃ samunnaddhaṃ na nirvāti kathaṃcana। abhimanyorvināśena sa sandheyaḥ kathaṃ mayā ॥9-4-20॥

(Remembering the deed of those heroes who were killed for my sake, releasing that debt, my mind did not engage in the kingdom.)
