O sage, after Duryodhana and his entire army were slain, what did King Dhritarashtra do upon hearing this?
तथैव कौरवो राजा धर्मपुत्रो महामनाः। कृपप्रभृतयश्चैव किमकुर्वत ते त्रयः ॥११-१-२॥

अश्वत्थाम्नः श्रुतं कर्म शापश्चान्योन्यकारितः। वृत्तान्तमुत्तरं ब्रूहि यदभाषत सञ्जयः ॥११-१-३॥

ध्यानमूकत्वमापन्नं चिन्तया समभिप्लुतम्। अभिगम्य महाप्राज्ञः सञ्जयो वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥११-१-५॥
dhyānamūkatvam-āpannaṃ cintayā samabhiplutam। abhigamya mahāprājñaḥ sañjayo vākyam-abravīt ॥11-1-5॥

Sanjaya, the wise, approached and spoke as Dhritarashtra sat silent in meditation, overwhelmed by thought.
किं शोचसि महाराज नास्ति शोके सहायता। अक्षौहिण्यो हताश्चाष्टौ दश चैव विशां पते ॥ निर्जनेयं वसुमती शून्या सम्प्रति केवला ॥११-१-६॥
kiṁ śocasi mahārāja nāsti śoke sahāyatā। akṣauhiṇyo hatāś cāṣṭau daśa caiva viśāṁ pate ॥ nirjaneyaṁ vasumatī śūnyā samprati kevalā ॥11-1-6॥

(Why do you grieve, O great king? There is no help in grief. Eight and ten akṣauhiṇīs have been slain, O lord of men. This earth is now deserted, empty, and alone.)
Why do you grieve, O great king? There is no help in sorrow. Eighteen akṣauhiṇīs have been destroyed, O lord of men. Now this earth is deserted, empty, and left alone.
नानादिग्भ्यः समागम्य नानादेश्या नराधिपाः। सहितास्तव पुत्रेण सर्वे वै निधनं गताः ॥११-१-७॥
nānādigbhyaḥ samāgamya nānādeśyā narādhipāḥ। sahitāstava putreṇa sarve vai nidhanaṃ gatāḥ॥11-1-7॥
[नाना-दिग्भ्यः (nānā-digbhyaḥ) - from various directions; समागम्य (samāgamya) - having assembled; नाना-देश्याः (nānā-deśyāḥ) - from various regions; नर-अधिपाः (nara-adhipāḥ) - kings; सहिताः (sahitāḥ) - together; तव (tava) - your; पुत्रेण (putreṇa) - with son; सर्वे (sarve) - all; वै (vai) - indeed; निधनं (nidhanaṃ) - death; गताः (gatāḥ) - have gone;]
(Having assembled from various directions, kings from various regions, together with your son, all indeed have gone to death.)
Kings from many directions and regions gathered together with your son; all of them have indeed perished.
पितॄणां पुत्रपौत्राणां ज्ञातीनां सुहृदां तथा। गुरूणां चानुपूर्व्येण प्रेतकार्याणि कारय ॥११-१-८॥
pitṝṇāṃ putrapautrāṇāṃ jñātīnāṃ suhṛdāṃ tathā। gurūṇāṃ cānupūrvyeṇa pretakāryāṇi kāraya ॥11-1-8॥

तच्छ्रुत्वा करुणं वाक्यं पुत्रपौत्रवधार्दितः। पपात भुवि दुर्धर्षो वाताहत इव द्रुमः ॥११-१-९॥
tacchrutvā karuṇaṃ vākyaṃ putrapautravadhārditaḥ। papāta bhuvi durdharṣo vātāhata iva drumaḥ॥11-1-9॥
[तत् (tat) - that; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; करुणं (karuṇam) - piteous; वाक्यं (vākyaṃ) - words; पुत्र (putra) - son; पौत्र (pautra) - grandson; वध (vadha) - slaughter; आर्दितः (ārditaḥ) - afflicted; पपात (papāta) - fell; भुवि (bhuvi) - on the ground; दुर्धर्षः (durdharṣaḥ) - the unassailable one; वाताहत (vātāhata) - struck by the wind; इव (iva) - like; द्रुमः (drumaḥ) - tree;]
(Having heard those piteous words, afflicted by the slaughter of his son and grandson, the unassailable one fell on the ground like a tree struck by the wind.)
Hearing those sorrowful words and overwhelmed by the loss of his son and grandson, the mighty one collapsed to the ground like a tree felled by the wind.
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच॥

Dhritarashtra said:
हतपुत्रो हतामात्यो हतसर्वसुहृज्जनः। दुःखं नूनं भविष्यामि विचरन्पृथिवीमिमाम् ॥११-१-१०॥
hataputro hatāmātyo hatasarvasuhṛj-janaḥ। duḥkhaṃ nūnaṃ bhaviṣyāmi vicaran pṛthivīm imām ॥11-1-10॥
[हतपुत्रः (hataputraḥ) - whose son is slain; हतामात्यः (hatāmātyaḥ) - whose ministers are slain; हतसर्वसुहृज्जनः (hatasarvasuhṛj-janaḥ) - whose all friends are slain; दुःखम् (duḥkham) - sorrow; नूनम् (nūnam) - surely; भविष्यामि (bhaviṣyāmi) - I shall become; विचरन् (vicaran) - wandering; पृथिवीम् (pṛthivīm) - the earth; इमाम् (imām) - this;]
(Whose son is slain, whose ministers are slain, whose all friends are slain, surely I shall become sorrow, wandering this earth.)
Having lost my son, ministers, and all my friends, I shall surely wander this earth in sorrow.
किं नु बन्धुविहीनस्य जीवितेन ममाद्य वै। लूनपक्षस्य इव मे जराजीर्णस्य पक्षिणः ॥११-१-११॥
kiṁ nu bandhu-vihīnasya jīvitena mama adya vai। lūna-pakṣasya iva me jarā-jīrṇasya pakṣiṇaḥ ॥11-1-11॥
[किं (kiṁ) - what; नु (nu) - indeed; बन्धुविहीनस्य (bandhu-vihīnasya) - of one bereft of relatives; जीवितेन (jīvitena) - with life; मम (mama) - my; अद्य (adya) - today; वै (vai) - indeed; लूनपक्षस्य (lūna-pakṣasya) - of one whose wings are cut; इव (iva) - like; मे (me) - my; जराजीर्णस्य (jarā-jīrṇasya) - aged and worn out; पक्षिणः (pakṣiṇaḥ) - of a bird;]
(What indeed is the use of life to me today, bereft of relatives, like my life is that of a bird whose wings are cut, aged and worn out?)
What is the point of my life today, without any relatives? My life is like that of an old, worn-out bird with its wings clipped.
हृतराज्यो हतसुहृद्धतचक्षुश्च वै तथा। न भ्राजिष्ये महाप्राज्ञ क्षीणरश्मिरिवांशुमान् ॥११-१-१२॥
hṛtarājyo hatasuhṛddhatacakṣuśca vai tathā। na bhrājiṣye mahāprājña kṣīṇaraśmirivāṃśumān ॥11-1-12॥
[हृत-राज्यः (hṛta-rājyaḥ) - whose kingdom is taken away; हत-सुहृत् (hata-suhṛt) - whose friends are slain; हत-चक्षुः-च (hata-cakṣuḥ-ca) - and whose sight is destroyed; वै (vai) - indeed; तथा (tathā) - thus; न (na) - not; भ्राजिष्ये (bhrājiṣye) - I will shine; महाप्राज्ञ (mahāprājña) - O wise one; क्षीण-रश्मिः-इव (kṣīṇa-raśmiḥ-iva) - like one whose rays are diminished; अंशुमान् (aṃśumān) - the sun; ॥११-१-१२॥ (॥11-1-12॥) - (verse number;);]
(Whose kingdom is taken away, whose friends are slain, and whose sight is destroyed, indeed, thus, I, O wise one, will not shine, like the sun whose rays are diminished.)
My kingdom is lost, my friends are slain, and my sight is gone; O wise one, I will not shine, just like the sun whose rays have faded.
न कृतं सुहृदां वाक्यं जामदग्न्यस्य जल्पतः। नारदस्य च देवर्षेः कृष्णद्वैपायनस्य च ॥११-१-१३॥
na kṛtaṃ suhṛdāṃ vākyaṃ jāmadagnyasya jalpataḥ। nāradasya ca devarṣeḥ kṛṣṇadvaipāyanasya ca ॥11-1-13॥

The words spoken by the friends—Jāmadagnya (Paraśurāma), Nārada, and the divine sage Kṛṣṇadvaipāyana (Vyāsa)—were not heeded.
सभामध्ये तु कृष्णेन यच्छ्रेयोऽभिहितं मम। अलं वैरेण ते राजन्पुत्रः सङ्गृह्यतामिति ॥११-१-१४॥
sabhāmadhye tu kṛṣṇena yac chreyo’bhihitaṃ mama। alaṃ vaireṇa te rājan putraḥ saṅgṛhyatāmiti ॥11-1-14॥
[सभामध्ये (sabhāmadhye) - in the assembly; तु (tu) - but; कृष्णेन (kṛṣṇena) - by Kṛṣṇa; यत् (yat) - which; श्रेयः (śreyaḥ) - good; benefit; अभिहितं (abhihitaṃ) - was spoken; मम (mama) - to me; अलम् (alam) - enough; वैरेण (vaireṇa) - with enmity; ते (te) - your; राजन् (rājan) - O king; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; सङ्गृह्यताम् (saṅgṛhyatām) - should be restrained; इति (iti) - thus;]
(But in the assembly, that which was spoken by Kṛṣṇa as beneficial to me: 'Enough of your enmity, O king; let your son be restrained' thus.)
But in the assembly, Kṛṣṇa said what was best for me: 'O king, let there be an end to your enmity; let your son be restrained.'
तच्च वाक्यमकृत्वाहं भृशं तप्यामि दुर्मतिः। न हि श्रोतास्मि भीष्मस्य धर्मयुक्तं प्रभाषितम् ॥११-१-१५॥
tac ca vākyam akṛtvā ahaṃ bhṛśaṃ tapyāmi durmatiḥ। na hi śrotāsmi bhīṣmasya dharmayuktaṃ prabhāṣitam ॥11-1-15॥
[तत् (tat) - that; च (ca) - and; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - word; अकृत्वा (akṛtvā) - not having done; अहम् (aham) - I; भृशम् (bhṛśam) - greatly; तप्यामि (tapyāmi) - am tormented; दुर्मतिः (durmatiḥ) - foolish-minded; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; श्रोतास्मि (śrotāsmi) - am able to hear; भीष्मस्य (bhīṣmasya) - of Bhishma; धर्मयुक्तम् (dharmayuktam) - righteous; प्रभाषितम् (prabhāṣitam) - spoken;]
(That word not having done, I, greatly tormented, foolish-minded, am not indeed able to hear the righteous speech spoken by Bhishma.)
Because I did not act on that word, I, being foolish and greatly tormented, am now unable to listen to the righteous words spoken by Bhishma.
दुर्योधनस्य च तथा वृषभस्येव नर्दतः। दुःशासनवधं श्रुत्वा कर्णस्य च विपर्ययम् ॥ द्रोणसूर्योपरागं च हृदयं मे विदीर्यते ॥११-१-१६॥
duryodhanasya ca tathā vṛṣabhasyeva nardataḥ। duḥśāsanavadhaṃ śrutvā karṇasya ca viparyayam ॥ droṇasūryoparāgaṃ ca hṛdayaṃ me vidīryate ॥11-1-16॥
[दुर्योधनस्य (duryodhanasya) - of Duryodhana; च (ca) - and; तथा (tathā) - thus; वृषभस्य (vṛṣabhasya) - of the bull; इव (iva) - like; नर्दतः (nardataḥ) - roaring; दुःशासनवधं (duḥśāsanavadham) - the killing of Duḥśāsana; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; कर्णस्य (karṇasya) - of Karṇa; च (ca) - and; विपर्ययम् (viparyayam) - the defeat; द्रोणसूर्योपारागं (droṇasūryoparāgam) - the eclipse of Droṇa, the sun; च (ca) - and; हृदयं (hṛdayam) - the heart; मे (me) - my; विदीर्यते (vidīryate) - is torn apart;]
(Of Duryodhana and thus like the bull roaring; having heard the killing of Duḥśāsana and the defeat of Karṇa; and the eclipse of Droṇa, the sun; my heart is torn apart.)
Hearing of Duḥśāsana's death, Karṇa's defeat, and the fall of Droṇa, my heart is shattered, just as Duryodhana roared like a bull.
न स्मराम्यात्मनः किञ्चित्पुरा सञ्जय दुष्कृतम्। यस्येदं फलमद्येह मया मूढेन भुज्यते ॥११-१-१७॥
na smarāmy ātmanaḥ kiñcit purā sañjaya duṣkṛtam। yasyedaṃ phalam adyeha mayā mūḍhena bhujyate ॥11-1-17॥
[न (na) - not; स्मरामि (smarāmi) - I remember; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of myself; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; पुरा (purā) - formerly; सञ्जय (sañjaya) - O Sañjaya; दुष्कृतम् (duṣkṛtam) - evil deed; यस्य (yasya) - of which; इदं (idaṃ) - this; फलम् (phalam) - fruit; अद्य (adya) - today; इह (iha) - here; मया (mayā) - by me; मूढेन (mūḍhena) - by the deluded; भुज्यते (bhujyate) - is experienced;]
(I do not remember, of myself, anything formerly, O Sañjaya, any evil deed, of which this fruit today here by me, the deluded, is experienced.)
O Sañjaya, I do not recall having done any evil deed in the past for which I, in my delusion, am experiencing this result today.
नूनं ह्यपकृतं किञ्चिन्मया पूर्वेषु जन्मसु। येन मां दुःखभागेषु धाता कर्मसु युक्तवान् ॥११-१-१८॥
nūnaṃ hy apakṛtaṃ kiñcin mayā pūrveṣu janmasu। yena māṃ duḥkhabhāgeṣu dhātā karmasu yuktavān ॥11-1-18॥
[नूनम् (nūnam) - indeed; हि (hi) - for; अपकृतम् (apakṛtam) - something wrong; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - some; मया (mayā) - by me; पूर्वेषु (pūrveṣu) - in previous; जन्मसु (janmasu) - births; येन (yena) - by which; माम् (mām) - me; दुःखभागेषु (duḥkhabhāgeṣu) - among those who partake in suffering; धाता (dhātā) - the creator; कर्मसु (karmasu) - in actions; युक्तवान् (yuktavān) - has engaged;]
(Indeed, for some wrong has been done by me in previous births, by which the creator has engaged me among those who partake in suffering in actions.)
Surely, I must have committed some misdeed in my previous lives, because of which the creator has made me partake in suffering through my actions.
परिणामश्च वयसः सर्वबन्धुक्षयश्च मे। सुहृन्मित्रविनाशश्च दैवयोगादुपागतः ॥ कोऽन्योऽस्ति दुःखिततरो मया लोके पुमानिह ॥११-१-१९॥
pariṇāmaś ca vayasaḥ sarva-bandhu-kṣayaś ca me। suhṛn-mitra-vināśaś ca daiva-yogād upāgataḥ ॥ ko'nyaḥ asti duḥkhitataro mayā loke pumān iha ॥11-1-19॥
[परिणामः (pariṇāmaḥ) - change; च (ca) - and; वयसः (vayasaḥ) - of age; सर्वबन्धुक्षयः (sarva-bandhu-kṣayaḥ) - destruction of all relatives; च (ca) - and; मे (me) - to me; सुहृत् (suhṛt) - friend; मित्र (mitra) - companion; विनाशः (vināśaḥ) - loss; च (ca) - and; दैवयोगात् (daiva-yogāt) - by fate; उपागतः (upāgataḥ) - has come; कः (kaḥ) - who; अन्यः (anyaḥ) - else; अस्ति (asti) - is; दुःखिततरः (duḥkhitataraḥ) - more sorrowful; मया (mayā) - than me; लोके (loke) - in the world; पुमान् (pumān) - man; इह (iha) - here;]
(Change of age and destruction of all relatives to me, and loss of friends and companions has come by fate. Who else is there more sorrowful than me in this world, man here?)
With the change of age, the destruction of all my relatives, and the loss of friends and companions by fate, who else is there in this world, among men here, more sorrowful than I am?
तन्मामद्यैव पश्यन्तु पाण्डवाः संशितव्रतम्। विवृतं ब्रह्मलोकस्य दीर्घमध्वानमास्थितम् ॥११-१-२०॥

(Of him, lamenting, seeking much grief, Sanjaya, the remover of the king's grief, spoke words.)
As he lamented and searched in great sorrow, Sanjaya, who relieves the king's grief, spoke these words.
शोकं राजन्व्यपनुद श्रुतास्ते वेदनिश्चयाः। शास्त्रागमाश्च विविधा वृद्धेभ्यो नृपसत्तम ॥ सृञ्जये पुत्रशोकार्ते यदूचुर्मुनयः पुरा ॥११-१-२२॥
śokaṃ rājan vyapanuda śrutās te veda-niścayāḥ। śāstrāgamāś ca vividhā vṛddhebhyo nṛpa-sattama॥ sṛñjaye putra-śokārte yad ūcur munayaḥ purā॥11-1-22॥

(O king, remove grief; you have heard the conclusions of the Vedas, and the various treatises and traditions from the elders, O best of kings. To Sṛñjaya, afflicted with grief for his son, what the sages formerly said:)
O king, dispel your grief; you have already heard the conclusions of the Vedas and the various treatises and traditions from the elders, O best of kings. This is what the sages once said to Sṛñjaya, who was stricken with grief for his son.
तथा यौवनजं दर्पमास्थिते ते सुते नृप। न त्वया सुहृदां वाक्यं ब्रुवतामवधारितम् ॥ स्वार्थश्च न कृतः कश्चिल्लुब्धेन फलगृद्धिना ॥११-१-२३॥
tathā yauvanajaṃ darpam āsthite te sute nṛpa। na tvayā suhṛdāṃ vākyaṃ bruvatām avadhāritam ॥ svārthaś ca na kṛtaḥ kaścil lubdhena phalagr̥ddhinā ॥11-1-23॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; यौवनजं (yauvanajam) - born of youth; दर्पम् (darpam) - arrogance; आस्थिते (āsthite) - having assumed; ते (te) - your; सुते (sute) - son; नृप (nṛpa) - O king; न (na) - not; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; सुहृदां (suhṛdām) - of friends; वाक्यं (vākyaṃ) - words; ब्रुवताम् (bruvatām) - speaking; अवधारितम् (avadhāritam) - was heeded; स्वार्थः (svārthaḥ) - own interest; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; कृतः (kṛtaḥ) - was done; कश्चित् (kaścit) - any; लुब्धेन (lubdhena) - by the greedy; फलगृद्धिना (phalagr̥ddhinā) - by one desirous of fruit;]
(Thus, your son, O king, having assumed arrogance born of youth, did not heed the words spoken by friends by you. And no own interest was done by anyone greedy, desirous of fruit.)
O king, your son, filled with the arrogance of youth, did not listen to the advice of friends as you did. And, being greedy for results, he did not act in anyone's true interest.
तव दुःशासनो मन्त्री राधेयश्च दुरात्मवान्। शकुनिश्चैव दुष्टात्मा चित्रसेनश्च दुर्मतिः ॥ शल्यश्च येन वै सर्वं शल्यभूतं कृतं जगत् ॥११-१-२४॥
tava duḥśāsano mantrī rādheyaś ca durātmavān। śakuniś caiva duṣṭātmā citrasenaś ca durmatiḥ ॥ śalyaś ca yena vai sarvaṃ śalyabhūtaṃ kṛtaṃ jagat ॥11-1-24॥
[तव (tava) - your; दुःशासनो (duḥśāsanaḥ) - Duḥśāsana; मन्त्री (mantrī) - minister; राधेयः (rādheyaḥ) - Karna; च (ca) - and; दुरात्मवान् (durātmavān) - wicked-souled; शकुनिः (śakuniḥ) - Śakuni; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; दुष्टात्मा (duṣṭātmā) - evil-minded; चित्रसेनः (citrasenaḥ) - Citrasena; च (ca) - and; दुर्मतिः (durmatiḥ) - ill-intentioned; शल्यः (śalyaḥ) - Śalya; च (ca) - and; येन (yena) - by whom; वै (vai) - indeed; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; शल्यभूतम् (śalyabhūtam) - become a thorn; कृतम् (kṛtam) - made; जगत् (jagat) - the world;]
(Your Duḥśāsana, the minister, Karna, and the wicked-souled; Śakuni indeed, the evil-minded, Citrasena and the ill-intentioned; and Śalya, by whom indeed all the world has been made into a thorn.)
Your Duḥśāsana, the minister, Karna, and other wicked-souled men—Śakuni, Citrasena, and the ill-intentioned Śalya—have made the whole world a place of suffering.
कुरुवृद्धस्य भीष्मस्य गान्धार्या विदुरस्य च। न कृतं वचनं तेन तव पुत्रेण भारत ॥११-१-२५॥
kuruvṛddhasya bhīṣmasya gāndhāryā vidurasya ca। na kṛtaṃ vacanaṃ tena tava putreṇa bhārata ॥11-1-25॥
[कुरुवृद्धस्य (kuruvṛddhasya) - of the elder of the Kurus; भीष्मस्य (bhīṣmasya) - of Bhishma; गान्धार्या (gāndhāryāḥ) - of Gandhari; विदुरस्य (vidurasya) - of Vidura; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; कृतं (kṛtam) - done; वचनं (vacanam) - word; तेन (tena) - by him; तव (tava) - your; पुत्रेण (putreṇa) - by son; भारत (bhārata) - O Bharata;]
(The word of the elder of the Kurus, of Bhishma, of Gandhari, and of Vidura was not done by your son, O Bharata.)
O Bharata, your son did not heed the words of the elder of the Kurus, Bhishma, Gandhari, and Vidura.
न धर्मः सत्कृतः कश्चिन्नित्यं युद्धमिति ब्रुवन्। क्षपिताः क्षत्रियाः सर्वे शत्रूणां वर्धितं यशः ॥११-१-२६॥
na dharmaḥ satkṛtaḥ kaścin nityaṃ yuddham iti bruvan। kṣapitāḥ kṣatriyāḥ sarve śatrūṇāṃ vardhitaṃ yaśaḥ ॥11-1-26॥
[न (na) - not; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - righteousness; सत्कृतः (satkṛtaḥ) - honored; कश्चित् (kaścit) - anyone; नित्यं (nityam) - always; युद्धम् (yuddham) - war; इति (iti) - thus; ब्रुवन् (bruvan) - saying; क्षपिताः (kṣapitāḥ) - destroyed; क्षत्रियाः (kṣatriyāḥ) - Kshatriyas; सर्वे (sarve) - all; शत्रूणाम् (śatrūṇām) - of the enemies; वर्धितम् (vardhitam) - increased; यशः (yaśaḥ) - glory;]
(Not anyone honored righteousness, saying "war is always"; all Kshatriyas were destroyed, the glory of the enemies increased.)
No one respected righteousness, saying "war is perpetual"; all the Kshatriyas were destroyed, and the glory of the enemies increased.
मध्यस्थो हि त्वमप्यासीर्न क्षमं किञ्चिदुक्तवान्। धूर्धरेण त्वया भारस्तुलया न समं धृतः ॥११-१-२७॥
madhyastho hi tvam-apy-āsīr na kṣamaṃ kiñcid-uktavān। dhūrdhareṇa tvayā bhāras-tulayā na samaṃ dhṛtaḥ ॥11-1-27॥
[मध्यस्थः (madhyasthaḥ) - neutral; हि (hi) - indeed; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अपि (api) - also; आसीः (āsīḥ) - were; न (na) - not; क्षमम् (kṣamam) - proper; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; उक्तवान् (uktavān) - said; धूर्धरेण (dhūrdhareṇa) - by Dhūrdhara; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; भारः (bhāraḥ) - burden; तुलया (tulayā) - with the scale; न (na) - not; समम् (samam) - equally; धृतः (dhṛtaḥ) - held;]
(You indeed were neutral, you also did not say anything proper. By Dhūrdhara, by you, the burden was not held equally with the scale.)
You remained neutral and did not say anything appropriate. The burden was not held equally by you and Dhūrdhara on the scale.
आदावेव मनुष्येण वर्तितव्यं यथा क्षमम्। यथा नातीतमर्थं वै पश्चात्तापेन युज्यते ॥११-१-२८॥
ādāveva manuṣyeṇa vartitavyaṃ yathā kṣamam। yathā nātītamarthaṃ vai paścāttāpena yujyate ॥11-1-28॥
[आदौ (ādau) - at the beginning; एव (eva) - indeed; मनुष्येण (manuṣyeṇa) - by a person; वर्तितव्यं (vartitavyam) - should behave; यथा (yathā) - as; क्षमम् (kṣamam) - proper; यथा (yathā) - so that; न (na) - not; अतीतम् (atītam) - past; अर्थं (arthaṃ) - matter; वै (vai) - indeed; पश्चात्तापेन (paścāttāpena) - with regret; युज्यते (yujyate) - is afflicted;]
(At the beginning indeed, a person should behave as is proper, so that he is not afflicted with regret for past matters.)
From the very start, a person should act appropriately, so that he does not later regret what has already happened.
पुत्रगृद्ध्या त्वया राजन्प्रियं तस्य चिकीर्षता। पश्चात्तापमिदं प्राप्तं न त्वं शोचितुमर्हसि ॥११-१-२९॥
putragṛddhyā tvayā rājan priyaṃ tasya cikīrṣatā। paścāttāpam idaṃ prāptaṃ na tvaṃ śocitum arhasi॥11-1-29॥
[पुत्रगृद्ध्या (putragṛddhyā) - by desire for your son; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; राजन् (rājan) - O king; प्रियं (priyaṃ) - dear (thing); तस्य (tasya) - for him; चिकीर्षता (cikīrṣatā) - wishing to do; पश्चात्तापम् (paścāttāpam) - regret; इदं (idaṃ) - this; प्राप्तं (prāptaṃ) - has come; न (na) - not; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; शोचितुम् (śocitum) - to grieve; अर्हसि (arhasi) - ought; ॥११-१-२९॥ (॥11-1-29॥) -;]
(By desire for your son, by you, O king, wishing to do what was dear for him, this regret has come; you ought not to grieve.)
O king, because you wished to do what was dear to your son out of affection, this regret has come to you; but you should not grieve.
मधु यः केवलं दृष्ट्वा प्रपातं नानुपश्यति। स भ्रष्टो मधुलोभेन शोचत्येव यथा भवान् ॥११-१-३०॥
madhu yaḥ kevalaṃ dṛṣṭvā prapātaṃ nānupaśyati। sa bhraṣṭo madhulobhena śocatyeva yathā bhavān ॥11-1-30॥
[मधु (madhu) - honey; यः (yaḥ) - who; केवलं (kevalaṃ) - only; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; प्रपातं (prapātaṃ) - the precipice; न (na) - not; अनुपश्यति (anupaśyati) - perceives; सः (sa) - he; भ्रष्टः (bhraṣṭaḥ) - fallen; मधुलोभेन (madhulobhena) - by greed for honey; शोचति (śocati) - grieves; एव (eva) - indeed; यथा (yathā) - just as; भवान् (bhavān) - you;]
(He who, seeing only the honey, does not perceive the precipice, he, fallen by greed for honey, indeed grieves, just as you.)
He who, seeing only the honey, does not notice the precipice, falls due to his greed for honey and grieves, just as you do.
अर्थान्न शोचन्प्राप्नोति न शोचन्विन्दते सुखम्। न शोचञ्श्रियमाप्नोति न शोचन्विन्दते परम् ॥११-१-३१॥
arthān na śocan prāpnoti na śocan vindate sukham। na śocan śriyam āpnoti na śocan vindate param ॥11-1-31॥
[अर्थान् (arthān) - objects; न (na) - not; शोचन् (śocan) - grieving; प्राप्नोति (prāpnoti) - obtains; न (na) - not; शोचन् (śocan) - grieving; विन्दते (vindate) - finds; सुखम् (sukham) - happiness; न (na) - not; शोचन् (śocan) - grieving; श्रियाम् (śriyam) - prosperity; आप्नोति (āpnoti) - attains; न (na) - not; शोचन् (śocan) - grieving; विन्दते (vindate) - finds; परम् (param) - the highest;]
(Not grieving, one obtains objects; not grieving, one finds happiness. Not grieving, one attains prosperity; not grieving, one finds the highest.)
One who does not grieve attains objects, happiness, prosperity, and the highest goal.
स्वयमुत्पादयित्वाग्निं वस्त्रेण परिवेष्टयेत्। दह्यमानो मनस्तापं भजते न स पण्डितः ॥११-१-३२॥
svayam-utpādayitvā-agniṃ vastreṇa pariveṣṭayet। dahyamānaḥ manas-tāpaṃ bhajate na sa paṇḍitaḥ ॥11-1-32॥
[स्वयम् (svayam) - oneself; उत्पाद्य (utpādya) - having produced; इत्वा (itvā) - having; अग्निम् (agniṃ) - fire; वस्त्रेण (vastreṇa) - with cloth; परिवेष्टयेत् (pariveṣṭayet) - should wrap; दह्यमानः (dahyamānaḥ) - being burned; मनः (manaḥ) - mind; तापम् (tāpam) - pain; भजते (bhajate) - experiences; न (na) - not; सः (saḥ) - he; पण्डितः (paṇḍitaḥ) - wise person;]
(Having produced fire oneself, one should wrap it with cloth. Being burned, he who experiences pain in the mind is not a wise person.)
If a person, after kindling a fire himself, wraps it in cloth and then complains of being burned, he is not wise. Similarly, a wise person does not let mental pain trouble him.
त्वयैव ससुतेनायं वाक्यवायुसमीरितः। लोभाज्येन च संसिक्तो ज्वलितः पार्थपावकः ॥११-१-३३॥
tvayaiva sasutenāyaṃ vākyavāyusamīritaḥ। lobhājyena ca saṃsikto jvalitaḥ pārthapāvakaḥ ॥11-1-33॥
[त्वया (tvayā) - by you; एव (eva) - indeed; ससुतेन (sasutenā) - with (your) son; अयम् (ayam) - this; वाक्यवायुसमीरितः (vākyavāyusamīritaḥ) - fanned by the wind of words; लोभाज्येन (lobhājyena) - with the ghee of greed; च (ca) - and; संसिक्तः (saṃsiktaḥ) - sprinkled; ज्वलितः (jvalitaḥ) - ignited; पार्थपावकः (pārthapāvakaḥ) - the fire of Partha (Arjuna);]
(By you indeed, with (your) son, this (fire) fanned by the wind of words, and sprinkled with the ghee of greed, the fire of Partha (Arjuna) is ignited.)
It is you, along with your son, who have fanned this fire of Partha (Arjuna) with words and fueled it with the ghee of greed, causing it to blaze up.
तस्मिन्समिद्धे पतिताः शलभा इव ते सुताः। तान्केशवार्चिर्निर्दग्धान्न त्वं शोचितुमर्हसि ॥११-१-३४॥
tasmin samiddhe patitāḥ śalabhā iva te sutāḥ। tān keśavārcir nirdagdhān na tvaṃ śocitum arhasi ॥11-1-34॥
[तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; समिद्धे (samiddhe) - blazing; पतिताः (patitāḥ) - fallen; शलभाः (śalabhāḥ) - moths; इव (iva) - like; ते (te) - your; सुताः (sutāḥ) - sons; तान् (tān) - them; केशव-अर्चिः (keśava-arciḥ) - Keśava's flame; निर्दग्धान् (nirdagdhān) - burnt; न (na) - not; त्वम् (tvam) - you; शोचितुम् (śocitum) - to grieve; अर्हसि (arhasi) - ought; ॥११-१-३४॥ (॥11-1-34॥) - ;]
(In that blazing (fire), your sons fell like moths. You ought not to grieve for them, burnt by Keśava's flame.)

[यत् (yat) - which; च (ca) - and; अश्रुपातकलिलम् (aśrupātakalilam) - filled with falling tears; वदनम् (vadanam) - face; वहसे (vahase) - you bear; नृप (nṛpa) - O king; अशास्त्रदृष्टम् (aśāstradṛṣṭam) - not sanctioned by scripture; एतत् (etat) - this; हि (hi) - indeed; न (na) - not; प्रशंसन्ति (praśaṃsanti) - praise; पण्डिताः (paṇḍitāḥ) - the wise;]
(And that face, O king, which you bear filled with falling tears, this indeed is not sanctioned by scripture; the wise do not praise (it).)
O king, the wise do not approve of you bearing a tear-stained face, for such behavior is not sanctioned by the scriptures.
विस्फुलिङ्गा इव ह्येतान्दहन्ति किल मानवान्। जहीहि मन्युं बुद्ध्या वै धारयात्मानमात्मना ॥११-१-३६॥
visphuliṅgā iva hy etān dahanti kila mānavān। jahīhi manyuṃ buddhyā vai dhārayātmānam ātmanā ॥11-1-36॥
[विस्फुलिङ्गाः (visphuliṅgāḥ) - sparks; इव (iva) - like; हि (hi) - indeed; एतान् (etān) - these; दहन्ति (dahanti) - burn; किल (kila) - surely; मानवान् (mānavān) - men; जहीहि (jahīhi) - abandon; मन्यम् (manyum) - anger; बुद्ध्या (buddhyā) - with intellect; वै (vai) - indeed; धारय (dhāra) - restrain; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - the self; आत्मना (ātmanā) - by the self;]
(Sparks like indeed these burn surely men. Abandon anger with intellect indeed. Restrain the self by the self.)
Just as sparks burn men, so too does anger. Therefore, abandon anger with your intellect and restrain yourself by your own self-control.
एवमाश्वासितस्तेन सञ्जयेन महात्मना। विदुरो भूय एवाह बुद्धिपूर्वं परन्तप ॥११-१-३७॥
evam āśvāsitas tena sañjayena mahātmanā। viduro bhūya evāha buddhipūrvaṃ parantapa ॥11-1-37॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; आश्वासितः (āśvāsitaḥ) - consoled; तेन (tena) - by him; सञ्जयेन (sañjayena) - by Sañjaya; महात्मना (mahātmanā) - the great-souled; विदुरः (viduraḥ) - Vidura; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - again; एव (eva) - indeed; आह (āha) - said; बुद्धिपूर्वम् (buddhipūrvam) - with forethought; परन्तप (parantapa) - O scorcher of foes;]
(Thus consoled by the great-souled Sañjaya, Vidura again indeed said with forethought, O scorcher of foes.)
Thus, after being consoled by the great-souled Sañjaya, Vidura once again spoke thoughtfully, O conqueror of enemies.
