yad idaṃ dharma-gahanaṃ buddhyā samanugamyate। etad vistaraśaḥ sarvaṃ buddhi-mārgaṃ praśaṃsa me ॥11-5-1॥
[यत् (yat) - which; इदं (idaṃ) - this; धर्मगहनम् (dharma-gahanam) - the profundity of dharma; बुद्ध्या (buddhyā) - by intellect; समनुगम्यते (samanugamyate) - is comprehended; एतत् (etat) - this; विस्तरशः (vistaraśaḥ) - in detail; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; बुद्धिमार्गम् (buddhi-mārgam) - the path of intellect; प्रशंस (praśaṃsa) - praise; मे (me) - to me;]

अत्र ते वर्तयिष्यामि नमस्कृत्वा स्वयम्भुवे। यथा संसारगहनं वदन्ति परमर्षयः ॥११-५-२॥
atra te vartayiṣyāmi namaskṛtvā svayambhuve। yathā saṃsāragahanaṃ vadanti paramarṣayaḥ ॥11-5-2॥
[अत्र (atra) - here; ते (te) - to you; वर्तयिष्यामि (vartayiṣyāmi) - I shall relate; नमस्कृत्वा (namaskṛtvā) - having bowed; स्वयम्भुवे (svayambhuve) - to Svayambhu (the self-born); यथा (yathā) - as; संसारगहनम् (saṃsāragahanam) - the depth of worldly existence; वदन्ति (vadanti) - (they) say; परमर्षयः (paramarṣayaḥ) - the supreme sages;]
(Here to you I shall relate, having bowed to Svayambhu, as the supreme sages say the depth of worldly existence.)
Here, having bowed to Svayambhu, I will tell you as the supreme sages describe the profound depths of worldly existence.
कश्चिन्महति संसारे वर्तमानो द्विजः किल। वनं दुर्गमनुप्राप्तो महत्क्रव्यादसङ्कुलम् ॥११-५-३॥
kaścin mahati saṃsāre vartamāno dvijaḥ kila। vanaṃ durgam anuprāpto mahat-kravyāda-saṅkulam ॥11-5-3॥
[कश्चित् (kaścit) - someone; महति (mahati) - great; संसारे (saṃsāre) - in the world; वर्तमानः (vartamānaḥ) - living; द्विजः (dvijaḥ) - a twice-born (Brahmin); किल (kila) - indeed; वनम् (vanam) - forest; दुर्गम् (durgam) - difficult to traverse; अनुप्राप्तः (anuprāptaḥ) - having entered; महत् (mahat) - great; क्रव्याद-सङ्कुलम् (kravyāda-saṅkulam) - filled with carnivorous creatures;]
(Someone, a twice-born (Brahmin), indeed living in the great world, having entered a forest difficult to traverse, filled with great carnivorous creatures.)
Once, a certain Brahmin living in the vast world entered a dense forest teeming with fierce beasts.
सिंहव्याघ्रगजाकारैरतिघोरैर्महाशनैः। समन्तात्सम्परिक्षिप्तं मृत्योरपि भयप्रदम् ॥११-५-४॥
siṃha-vyāghra-gaja-ākāraiḥ ati-ghoraiḥ mahāśanaiḥ। samantāt samparikṣiptam mṛtyoḥ api bhaya-pradam ॥11-5-4॥
[सिंह (siṃha) - lion; व्याघ्र (vyāghra) - tiger; गज (gaja) - elephant; आकारैः (ākāraiḥ) - in forms; अति (ati) - very; घोरैः (ghoraiḥ) - terrible; महाशनैः (mahāśanaiḥ) - voracious; समन्तात् (samantāt) - on all sides; सम्परिक्षिप्तं (samparikṣiptam) - surrounded; मृत्योरपि (mṛtyoḥ api) - even for death; भयप्रदम् (bhaya-pradam) - causing fear;]
(Surrounded on all sides by very terrible, voracious beings in the forms of lions, tigers, and elephants, causing fear even to death.)
It was surrounded on all sides by extremely terrifying, voracious creatures resembling lions, tigers, and elephants, instilling fear even in death itself.
तदस्य दृष्ट्वा हृदयमुद्वेगमगमत्परम्। अभ्युच्छ्रयश्च रोम्णां वै विक्रियाश्च परन्तप ॥११-५-५॥
tadasya dṛṣṭvā hṛdayamudvegamagamatparam। abhyucchrayaśca romṇāṃ vai vikriyāśca parantapa ॥11-5-5॥

(That, his, having seen, heart, agitation, attained, extreme. Erection and of hairs indeed, changes and, O scorcher of foes.)
O scorcher of foes, having seen that, his heart was seized with extreme agitation. Indeed, there was erection of hairs and other changes.
स तद्वनं व्यनुसरन्विप्रधावनितस्ततः। वीक्षमाणो दिशः सर्वाः शरणं क्व भवेदिति ॥११-५-६॥
sa tad vanaṃ vy-anusaran vipra-dhāvan itaḥ tataḥ। vīkṣamāṇaḥ diśaḥ sarvāḥ śaraṇam kva bhavet iti॥11-5-6॥
[स (sa) - he; तत् (tat) - that; वनम् (vanam) - forest; व्यानुसरन् (vy-anusaran) - following everywhere; विप्रधावन् (vipra-dhāvan) - running about; इतः (itaḥ) - here; ततः (tataḥ) - there; वीक्षमाणः (vīkṣamāṇaḥ) - looking; दिशः (diśaḥ) - directions; सर्वाः (sarvāḥ) - all; शरणम् (śaraṇam) - refuge; क्व (kva) - where; भवेत् (bhavet) - might be; इति (iti) - thus;]
(He, following that forest everywhere, running about here and there, looking in all directions, (thinking) 'Where might refuge be?' thus.)
He wandered through that forest, searching everywhere, running here and there, looking in all directions, wondering, 'Where could I find refuge?'
स तेषां छिद्रमन्विच्छन्प्रद्रुतो भयपीडितः। न च निर्याति वै दूरं न च तैर्विप्रयुज्यते ॥११-५-७॥
sa teṣāṃ chidram anvicchan pradruto bhaya-pīḍitaḥ। na ca niryāti vai dūraṃ na ca tair viprayujyate ॥11-5-7॥
[स (sa) - he; तेषां (teṣām) - of them; छिद्रम् (chidram) - weakness; अन्विच्छन् (anvicchan) - seeking; प्रद्रुतः (pradrutaḥ) - fleeing; भयपीडितः (bhaya-pīḍitaḥ) - afflicted by fear; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; निर्याति (niryāti) - goes out; वै (vai) - indeed; दूरम् (dūram) - far; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; तैः (taiḥ) - from them; विप्रयुज्यते (viprayujyate) - is separated;]
(He, seeking a weakness among them, fleeing, afflicted by fear, does not indeed go far out, nor is he separated from them.)

अथापश्यद्वनं घोरं समन्ताद्वागुरावृतम्। बाहुभ्यां सम्परिष्वक्तं स्त्रिया परमघोरया ॥११-५-८॥

(Then he saw a terrible forest, on all sides enveloped by nets, embraced by the arms of a most terrible woman.)

पञ्चशीर्षधरैर्नागैः शैलैरिव समुन्नतैः। नभःस्पृशैर्महावृक्षैः परिक्षिप्तं महावनम् ॥११-५-९॥
pañca-śīrṣa-dharaiḥ nāgaiḥ śailaiḥ iva samunnataiḥ। nabhaḥ-spṛśaiḥ mahā-vṛkṣaiḥ parikṣiptam mahā-vanam॥11-5-9॥
[पञ्च (pañca) - five; शीर्षधरैः (śīrṣa-dharaiḥ) - headed-bearers; (having heads;) नागैः (nāgaiḥ) - by serpents; शैलैः (śailaiḥ) - by mountains; इव (iva) - like; समुन्नतैः (samunnataiḥ) - lofty; नभःस्पृशैः (nabhaḥ-spṛśaiḥ) - touching the sky; महावृक्षैः (mahā-vṛkṣaiḥ) - by great trees; परिक्षिप्तं (parikṣiptam) - enclosed; महावनम् (mahā-vanam) - great forest;]
(The great forest, enclosed by great trees touching the sky, lofty like mountains, by serpents bearing five heads.)
The great forest was surrounded by enormous trees that reached the sky, towering like mountains, and by five-headed serpents.
वनमध्ये च तत्राभूदुदपानः समावृतः। वल्लीभिस्तृणछन्नाभिर्गूढाभिरभिसंवृतः ॥११-५-१०॥
vanamadhye ca tatrābhūdudapānaḥ samāvṛtaḥ। vallībhiḥ tṛṇa-channābhir gūḍhābhir abhisaṃvṛtaḥ ॥11-5-10॥
[वनमध्ये (vanamadhye) - in the middle of the forest; च (ca) - and; तत्र (tatra) - there; अभूत् (abhūt) - there was; उदपानः (udapānaḥ) - a well; समावृतः (samāvṛtaḥ) - covered; वल्लीभिः (vallībhiḥ) - with creepers; तृणछन्नाभिः (tṛṇa-channābhiḥ) - covered with grass; गूढाभिः (gūḍhābhiḥ) - hidden; अभिसंवृतः (abhisaṃvṛtaḥ) - completely concealed;]
(In the middle of the forest and there was a well covered, with creepers, covered with grass, hidden, completely concealed.)

पपात स द्विजस्तत्र निगूढे सलिलाशये। विलग्नश्चाभवत्तस्मिँल्लतासन्तानसङ्कटे ॥११-५-११॥
papāta sa dvijastatra nigūḍhe salilāśaye। vilagnaścābhavattasmiṃllatāsantānasaṅkaṭe ॥11-5-11॥
[पपात (papāta) - fell; सः (saḥ) - he; द्विजः (dvijaḥ) - the bird; तत्र (tatra) - there; निगूढे (nigūḍhe) - hidden; सलिलाशये (salilāśaye) - in the water-bed; विलग्नः (vilagnaḥ) - entangled; च (ca) - and; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; लता-सन्तान-सङ्कटे (latā-santāna-saṅkaṭe) - in the thicket of creepers;]
(He, the bird, fell there in the hidden water-bed and became entangled in that thicket of creepers.)
The bird fell there into the concealed water-bed and became caught in the dense growth of creepers.
पनसस्य यथा जातं वृन्तबद्धं महाफलम्। स तथा लम्बते तत्र ऊर्ध्वपादो ह्यधःशिराः ॥११-५-१२॥
panasasya yathā jātaṃ vṛntabaddhaṃ mahāphalam। sa tathā lambate tatra ūrdhvapādo hyadhaḥśirāḥ ॥11-5-12॥
[पनसस्य (panasasya) - of the jackfruit; यथा (yathā) - just as; जातं (jātaṃ) - grown; वृन्तबद्धं (vṛntabaddhaṃ) - attached to the stalk; महाफलम् (mahāphalam) - large fruit; सः (saḥ) - he; तथा (tathā) - in that way; लम्बते (lambate) - hangs; तत्र (tatra) - there; ऊर्ध्वपादः (ūrdhvapādaḥ) - with feet upwards; हि (hi) - indeed; अधःशिराः (adhaḥśirāḥ) - with head downwards;]
(Just as the large fruit of the jackfruit, grown and attached to the stalk, hangs there with its feet upwards and head downwards, so does he.)

अथ तत्रापि चान्योऽस्य भूयो जात उपद्रवः। कूपवीनाहवेलायामपश्यत महागजम् ॥११-५-१३॥
atha tatrāpi cānyo'sya bhūyo jāta upadravaḥ। kūpavīnāhavelāyām apaśyata mahāgajam ॥11-5-13॥
[अथ (atha) - then; तत्र (tatra) - there; अपि (api) - also; च (ca) - and; अन्यः (anyaḥ) - another; अस्य (asya) - to him; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - again; जातः (jātaḥ) - arose; उपद्रवः (upadravaḥ) - trouble; कूपवीनाहवेलायाम् (kūpavīnāhavelāyām) - at the time of drawing water from the well; अपश्यत् (apaśyat) - he saw; महागजम् (mahāgajam) - a great elephant;]
(Then there also another trouble again arose for him. At the time of drawing water from the well, he saw a great elephant.)

षड्वक्त्रं कृष्णशबलं द्विषट्कपदचारिणम्। क्रमेण परिसर्पन्तं वल्लीवृक्षसमावृतम् ॥११-५-१४॥
ṣaḍvaktraṃ kṛṣṇaśabalaṃ dviṣaṭkapadacāriṇam। krameṇa parisarpantaṃ vallīvṛkṣasamāvṛtam ॥11-5-14॥
[षट् (ṣaṭ) - six; वक्त्रं (vaktraṃ) - faces; कृष्णशबलं (kṛṣṇaśabalaṃ) - black-spotted; द्वि (dvi) - two; षट् (ṣaṭ) - six; पद (pada) - feet; चारिणम् (cāriṇam) - moving; क्रमेण (krameṇa) - in order; परिसर्पन्तं (parisarpantam) - creeping; वल्ली (vallī) - creeper; वृक्ष (vṛkṣa) - tree; समावृतम् (samāvṛtam) - surrounded;]
(With six faces, black-spotted, moving with twelve feet, creeping in order, surrounded by creepers and trees.)
It had six faces, was black-spotted, moved with twelve feet, and crept along in order, surrounded by creepers and trees.
तस्य चापि प्रशाखासु वृक्षशाखावलम्बिनः। नानारूपा मधुकरा घोररूपा भयावहाः ॥ आसते मधु सम्भृत्य पूर्वमेव निकेतजाः ॥११-५-१५॥

(Of him and also on the branches, hanging from the tree branches, bees of various forms, terrible in form, frightening, sit having collected honey before indeed, inhabitants.)

भूयो भूयः समीहन्ते मधूनि भरतर्षभ। स्वादनीयानि भूतानां न यैर्बालोऽपि तृप्यते ॥११-५-१६॥
bhūyo bhūyaḥ samīhante madhūni bharatarṣabha। svādānīyāni bhūtānāṃ na yairbālo'pi tṛpyate ॥11-5-16॥
[भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - again and again; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - again and again; समीहन्ते (samīhante) - desire; मधूनि (madhūni) - sweets; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of the Bharatas; स्वादनीयानि (svādānīyāni) - delicious; भूतानाम् (bhūtānām) - of beings; न (na) - not; यैः (yaiḥ) - by which; बालः (bālaḥ) - child; अपि (api) - even; तृप्यते (tṛpyate) - is satisfied;]
(Again and again desire sweets, O best of the Bharatas; delicious (things) of beings not by which even a child is satisfied.)
O best of the Bharatas, beings repeatedly desire sweets, but even a child is not satisfied by them.
तेषां मधूनां बहुधा धारा प्रस्रवते सदा। तां लम्बमानः स पुमान्धारां पिबति सर्वदा ॥ न चास्य तृष्णा विरता पिबमानस्य सङ्कटे ॥११-५-१७॥
teṣāṃ madhūnāṃ bahudhā dhārā prasravate sadā। tāṃ lambamānaḥ sa pumāndhārāṃ pibati sarvadā ॥ na cāsya tṛṣṇā viratā pibamānasya saṅkaṭe ॥11-5-17॥
[तेषां (teṣām) - of those; मधूनां (madhūnām) - of pleasures; बहुधा (bahudhā) - in many ways; धारा (dhārā) - streams; प्रस्रवते (prasravate) - flow; सदा (sadā) - always; तां (tāṃ) - that; लम्बमानः (lambamānaḥ) - hanging down; सः (saḥ) - he; पुमान् (pumān) - man; धारां (dhārām) - stream; पिबति (pibati) - drinks; सर्वदा (sarvadā) - always; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अस्य (asya) - his; तृष्णा (tṛṣṇā) - thirst; विरता (viratā) - ceased; पिबमानस्य (pibamānasya) - of the one drinking; सङ्कटे (saṅkaṭe) - in distress;]
(Of those pleasures, streams flow in many ways always. That hanging down, he, the man, drinks the stream always. And his thirst is not ceased, of the one drinking in distress.)
Streams of those pleasures flow in many ways at all times. The man, hanging down, always drinks from that stream. Yet, even as he drinks in distress, his thirst never ceases.
अभीप्सति च तां नित्यमतृप्तः स पुनः पुनः। न चास्य जीविते राजन्निर्वेदः समजायत ॥११-५-१८॥
abhīpsati ca tāṃ nityam-atṛptaḥ sa punaḥ punaḥ। na cāsya jīvite rājan-nirvedaḥ samajāyata ॥11-5-18॥
[अभीप्सति (abhīpsati) - desires; च (ca) - and; तां (tāṃ) - her; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; अतृप्तः (atṛptaḥ) - unsatisfied; सः (saḥ) - he; पुनः पुनः (punaḥ punaḥ) - again and again; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अस्य (asya) - his; जीविते (jīvite) - in life; राजन् (rājan) - O king; निर्वेदः (nirvedaḥ) - disgust; समजायत (samajāyata) - arose;]
(He desires her always, unsatisfied, again and again; and in his life, O king, no disgust arose.)
He kept desiring her constantly, never satisfied, again and again; and, O king, he never felt any disgust in his life.
तत्रैव च मनुष्यस्य जीविताशा प्रतिष्ठिता। कृष्णाः श्वेताश्च तं वृक्षं कुट्टयन्ति स्म मूषकाः ॥११-५-१९॥
tatraiva ca manuṣyasya jīvitāśā pratiṣṭhitā। kṛṣṇāḥ śvetāś ca taṃ vṛkṣaṃ kuṭṭayanti sma mūṣakāḥ ॥11-5-19॥
[तत्रैव (tatraiva) - right there; च (ca) - and; मनुष्यस्य (manuṣyasya) - of the man; जीविताशा (jīvitāśā) - hope of life; प्रतिष्ठिता (pratiṣṭhitā) - was established; कृष्णाः (kṛṣṇāḥ) - black; श्वेताः (śvetāḥ) - white; च (ca) - and; तम् (tam) - that; वृक्षम् (vṛkṣam) - tree; कुट्टयन्ति (kuṭṭayanti) - were gnawing; स्म (sma) - indeed; मूषकाः (mūṣakāḥ) - mice;]
(Right there and the man's hope of life was established. Black and white mice were indeed gnawing that tree.)

व्यालय्श्च वनदुर्गान्ते स्त्रिया च परमोग्रया। कूपाधस्ताच्च नागेन वीनाहे कुञ्जरेण च ॥११-५-२०॥
vyālaiś ca vanadurgānte striyā ca paramograyā। kūpād hastāc ca nāgena vīnāhe kuñjareṇa ca ॥11-5-20॥
[व्यालय् (vyālaiḥ) - by wild beasts; च (ca) - and; वनदुर्गान्ते (vanadurgānte) - in the depths of forest fortresses; स्त्रिया (striyā) - by a woman; च (ca) - and; परमोग्रया (paramograyā) - extremely fierce; कूपात् (kūpāt) - from a well; हस्तात् (hastāt) - from the hand; च (ca) - and; नागेन (nāgena) - by a serpent; वीनाहे (vīnāhe) - by a mad elephant; कुञ्जरेण (kuñjareṇa) - by an elephant; च (ca) - and;]
(By wild beasts and in the depths of forest fortresses, and by an extremely fierce woman; from a well, from the hand, and by a serpent, by a mad elephant, and by an elephant.)
One may encounter destruction by wild beasts in the depths of forest fortresses, by an extremely fierce woman, by falling into a well, by the hand of a serpent, or by a mad or ordinary elephant.
वृक्षप्रपाताच्च भयं मूषकेभ्यश्च पञ्चमम्। मधुलोभान्मधुकरैः षष्ठमाहुर्महद्भयम् ॥११-५-२१॥
vṛkṣaprapātācca bhayaṃ mūṣakebhyaśca pañcamam। madhulobhān madhukaraiḥ ṣaṣṭham āhur mahad bhayam ॥11-5-21॥
[वृक्षप्रपातात् (vṛkṣaprapātāt) - from falling of trees; च (ca) - and; भयम् (bhayam) - fear; मूषकेभ्यः (mūṣakebhyaḥ) - from mice; च (ca) - and; पञ्चमम् (pañcamam) - the fifth; मधुलोभात् (madhulobhāt) - from greed for honey; मधुकरैः (madhukaraiḥ) - by bees; षष्ठम् (ṣaṣṭham) - the sixth; आहुः (āhuḥ) - they say; महत् (mahat) - great; भयम् (bhayam) - fear;]
(Fear from the falling of trees and from mice is the fifth; from greed for honey, by bees, they say the sixth is great fear.)
The fifth fear is said to be from falling trees and mice; the sixth, a great fear, is from bees due to greed for honey.
एवं स वसते तत्र क्षिप्तः संसारसागरे। न चैव जीविताशायां निर्वेदमुपगच्छति ॥११-५-२२॥
evaṃ sa vasate tatra kṣiptaḥ saṃsārasāgare। na caiva jīvitāśāyāṃ nirvedamupagacchati ॥11-5-22॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; स (sa) - he; वसते (vasate) - dwells; तत्र (tatra) - there; क्षिप्तः (kṣiptaḥ) - cast; संसारसागरे (saṃsārasāgare) - in the ocean of worldly existence; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; जीविताशायां (jīvitāśāyāṃ) - in the hope of life; निर्वेदम् (nirvedam) - dispassion; उपगच्छति (upagacchati) - attains;]
(Thus he dwells there, cast into the ocean of worldly existence; and indeed, in the hope of life, he does not attain dispassion.)
Thus, he remains there, thrown into the ocean of worldly existence, and, still clinging to the hope of life, does not develop dispassion.
