तेषां महात्मनां पूजामागतानां युधिष्ठिरः। भ्रातृभिः सहितश्चक्रे यथावदनुपूर्वशः ॥१३-२७-९॥
teṣāṃ mahātmanāṃ pūjāmāgatānāṃ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। bhrātṛbhiḥ sahitaścakre yathāvad-anupūrvaśaḥ ॥13-27-9॥

ते पूजिताः सुखासीनाः कथाश्चक्रुर्महर्षयः। भीष्माश्रिताः सुमधुराः सर्वेन्द्रियमनोहराः ॥१३-२७-१०॥
te pūjitāḥ sukhāsīnāḥ kathāś cakrur maharṣayaḥ। bhīṣmāśritāḥ sumadhurāḥ sarvendriyamanoharāḥ ॥13-27-10॥

The great sages, having been honored and comfortably seated, told stories to Bhīṣma that were very sweet and delightful to all the senses and the mind. (13-27-10)
भीष्मस्तेषां कथाः श्रुत्वा ऋषीणां भावितात्मनाम्। मेने दिविस्थमात्मानं तुष्ट्या परमया युतः ॥१३-२७-११॥
bhīṣmas teṣāṃ kathāḥ śrutvā ṛṣīṇāṃ bhāvitātmanām। mene divistham ātmānaṃ tuṣṭyā paramayā yutaḥ ॥13-27-11॥
[भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhishma; तेषां (teṣām) - of them; कथाः (kathāḥ) - stories; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; ऋषीणाम् (ṛṣīṇām) - of the sages; भावितात्मनाम् (bhāvitātmanām) - of those whose minds are purified; मेने (mene) - considered; दिविस्थम् (divistham) - situated in heaven; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - himself; तुष्ट्या (tuṣṭyā) - with satisfaction; परमया (paramayā) - with supreme; युतः (yutaḥ) - endowed;]

After hearing the stories of the sages whose minds were purified, Bhishma, filled with supreme satisfaction, felt as if he were in heaven. (13-27-11)
ततस्ते भीष्ममामन्त्र्य पाण्डवांश्च महर्षयः। अन्तर्धानं गताः सर्वे सर्वेषामेव पश्यताम् ॥१३-२७-१२॥
tataste bhīṣmamāmantrya pāṇḍavāṃśca maharṣayaḥ। antardhānaṃ gatāḥ sarve sarveṣāmeva paśyatām ॥13-27-12॥

तानृषीन्सुमहाभागानन्तर्धानगतानपि। पाण्डवास्तुष्टुवुः सर्वे प्रणेमुश्च मुहुर्मुहुः ॥१३-२७-१३॥

प्रसन्नमनसः सर्वे गाङ्गेयं कुरुसत्तमाः। उपतस्थुर्यथोद्यन्तमादित्यं मन्त्रकोविदाः ॥१३-२७-१४॥
prasannamanasaḥ sarve gāṅgeyaṃ kurusattamāḥ। upatasthur yathodyantam ādityaṃ mantrakovidāḥ ॥13-27-14॥

All the best of the Kurus, with clear minds, approached Gāṅgeya, who was skilled in mantras, just as people approach the rising Sun. (13-27-14)
प्रभावात्तपसस्तेषामृषीणां वीक्ष्य पाण्डवाः। प्रकाशन्तो दिशः सर्वा विस्मयं परमं ययुः ॥१३-२७-१५॥
prabhāvāttapasasteṣāṃ ṛṣīṇāṃ vīkṣya pāṇḍavāḥ। prakāśanto diśaḥ sarvā vismayaṃ paramaṃ yayuḥ ॥13-27-15॥

(From the power of the austerity of those sages, having seen, the Pāṇḍavas, shining, all the directions, supreme wonder, attained.)
Seeing all the directions shining from the power of the austerity of those sages, the Pāṇḍavas were filled with supreme wonder. (13-27-15)
महाभाग्यं परं तेषामृषीणामनुचिन्त्य ते। पाण्डवाः सह भीष्मेण कथाश्चक्रुस्तदाश्रयाः ॥१३-२७-१६॥
mahābhāgyaṃ paraṃ teṣām ṛṣīṇām anucintya te। pāṇḍavāḥ saha bhīṣmeṇa kathāś cakrus tadāśrayāḥ ॥13-27-16॥

कथान्ते शिरसा पादौ स्पृष्ट्वा भीष्मस्य पाण्डवः। धर्म्यं धर्मसुतः प्रश्नं पर्यपृच्छद्युधिष्ठिरः ॥१३-२७-१७॥

तपसा ब्रह्मचर्येण यज्ञैस्त्यागेन वा पुनः। गतिं तां न लभेज्जन्तुर्गङ्गां संसेव्य यां लभेत् ॥१३-२७-२६॥
tapasā brahmacaryeṇa yajñais tyāgena vā punaḥ। gatiṃ tāṃ na labhej jantur gaṅgāṃ saṃsevya yāṃ labhet ॥13-27-26॥

(By austerity, by celibacy, by sacrifices, by renunciation, or again, that state not may obtain creature; Ganga having served, which may obtain.)
A creature may not attain that state by austerity, celibacy, sacrifices, or renunciation; but by serving the Ganga, one may attain it. (13-27-26)
स्पृष्टानि येषां गाङ्गेयैस्तोयैर्गात्राणि देहिनाम्। न्यस्तानि न पुनस्तेषां त्यागः स्वर्गाद्विधीयते ॥१३-२७-२७॥
spṛṣṭāni yeṣāṃ gāṅgeyaiḥ toyair gātrāṇi dehinām। nyastāni na punas teṣāṃ tyāgaḥ svargād vidhīyate ॥13-27-27॥

For those embodied beings whose limbs have been touched by the waters of the Ganges and deposited, their abandonment is not again prescribed from heaven. (13-27-27)
सर्वाणि येषां गाङ्गेयैस्तोयैः कृत्यानि देहिनाम्। गां त्यक्त्वा मानवा विप्र दिवि तिष्ठन्ति तेऽचलाः ॥१३-२७-२८॥
sarvāṇi yeṣāṃ gāṅgeyaistoyaiḥ kṛtyāni dehinām। gāṃ tyaktvā mānavā vipra divi tiṣṭhanti te'calāḥ ॥13-27-28॥

(All whose rites of embodied beings are performed by the waters of the Ganges, having left the earth, men, O brāhmaṇa, in heaven they remain, they steadfast.)
O brāhmaṇa, all men whose rites are performed with the waters of the Ganges, after leaving the earth, remain steadfast in heaven. (13-27-28)
पूर्वे वयसि कर्माणि कृत्वा पापानि ये नराः। पश्चाद्गङ्गां निषेवन्ते तेऽपि यान्त्युत्तमां गतिम् ॥१३-२७-२९॥
pūrve vayasi karmāṇi kṛtvā pāpāṇi ye narāḥ। paścād gaṅgāṃ niṣevante te'pi yānty uttamāṃ gatim ॥13-27-29॥

(In former age, actions having done sins who men; afterwards Ganga resort to, they also go to highest state.)
Those men who, having committed sinful deeds in their earlier years, later resort to the Ganga, they too attain the highest state. (13-27-29)
स्नातानां शुचिभिस्तोयैर्गाङ्गेयैः प्रयतात्मनाम्। व्युष्टिर्भवति या पुंसां न सा क्रतुशतैरपि ॥१३-२७-३०॥
snātānāṃ śucibhistoyairgāṅgeyaiḥ prayatātmanām। vyuṣṭirbhavati yā puṃsāṃ na sā kratuśatairapi ॥13-27-30॥
[स्नातानाम् (snātānām) - of those who have bathed; शुचिभिः (śucibhiḥ) - by pure; तोयैः (toyaiḥ) - by waters; गाङ्गेयैः (gāṅgeyaiḥ) - of the Ganges; प्रयतात्मनाम् (prayatātmanām) - of those whose selves are purified; व्युष्टिः (vyuṣṭiḥ) - purification; भवति (bhavati) - becomes; या (yā) - which; पुंसाम् (puṃsām) - of men; न (na) - not; सा (sā) - that; क्रतुशतैः (kratuśataiḥ) - by hundreds of sacrifices; अपि (api) - even;]
(Of those who have bathed by pure waters of the Ganges, of those whose selves are purified, the purification which becomes for men, that is not even by hundreds of sacrifices.)
The purification attained by men who have bathed with pure waters of the Ganges and have purified their minds is not achieved even by hundreds of sacrifices. (13-27-30)
यावदस्थि मनुष्यस्य गङ्गातोयेषु तिष्ठति। तावद्वर्षसहस्राणि स्वर्गं प्राप्य महीयते ॥१३-२७-३१॥
yāvad-asthi manuṣyasya gaṅgā-toyeṣu tiṣṭhati। tāvad-varṣa-sahasrāṇi svargaṃ prāpya mahīyate ॥13-27-31॥
[यावत् (yāvat) - as long as; अस्थि (asthi) - bone; मनुष्यस्य (manuṣyasya) - of a person; गङ्गा (gaṅgā) - Ganga; तोयेषु (toyeṣu) - in the waters; तिष्ठति (tiṣṭhati) - remains; तावत् (tāvat) - so long; वर्ष (varṣa) - year; सहस्राणि (sahasrāṇi) - thousands; स्वर्गम् (svargam) - heaven; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having attained; महीयते (mahīyate) - is honored;]
(As long as the bone of a person remains in the waters of the Ganga, for so many thousands of years, having attained heaven, he is honored.)
For as long as a person's bone remains in the waters of the Ganga, for that many thousands of years, he is honored in heaven. (13-27-31)
अपहत्य तमस्तीव्रं यथा भात्युदये रविः। तथापहत्य पाप्मानं भाति गङ्गाजलोक्षितः ॥१३-२७-३२॥
apahatya tamastīvraṃ yathā bhātyudaye raviḥ। tathāpahatya pāpmānaṃ bhāti gaṅgājalokṣitaḥ ॥13-27-32॥

(Having removed intense darkness, just as the sun shines at the rising, in the same way, having removed sin, shines one sprinkled with Ganga water.)
Just as the sun shines at sunrise after dispelling intense darkness, so too, one sprinkled with Ganga water shines forth after removing sin. (13-27-32)
विसोमा इव शर्वर्यो विपुष्पास्तरवो यथा। तद्वद्देशा दिशश्चैव हीना गङ्गाजलैः शुभैः ॥१३-२७-३३॥
visomā iva śarvaryo vipuṣpās taravo yathā। tadvad deśā diśaś caiva hīnā gaṅgā-jalaiḥ śubhaiḥ ॥13-27-33॥
[विसोमा (visomā) - without moon; इव (iva) - like; शर्वर्यः (śarvaryaḥ) - nights; विपुष्पाः (vipuṣpāḥ) - without flowers; तरवः (taravaḥ) - trees; यथा (yathā) - as; तद्वत् (tadvat) - in that way; देशाः (deśāḥ) - regions; दिशः (diśaḥ) - directions; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; हीनाः (hīnāḥ) - deprived; गङ्गाजलैः (gaṅgā-jalaiḥ) - by Ganga waters; शुभैः (śubhaiḥ) - auspicious;]
(Without moon like nights, without flowers trees as; in that way regions directions and indeed deprived by Ganga waters auspicious.)
Just as nights without the moon and trees without flowers, so too are the regions and directions deprived of the auspicious waters of the Ganga. (13-27-33)
वर्णाश्रमा यथा सर्वे स्वधर्मज्ञानवर्जिताः। क्रतवश्च यथासोमास्तथा गङ्गां विना जगत् ॥१३-२७-३४॥
varṇāśramā yathā sarve svadharmajñānavarjitāḥ। kratavaś ca yathā somās tathā gaṅgāṃ vinā jagat ॥13-27-34॥
[वर्णाश्रमा (varṇāśramā) - castes and stages of life; यथा (yathā) - just as; सर्वे (sarve) - all; स्वधर्म (svadharma) - one's own duty; ज्ञान (jñāna) - knowledge; वर्जिताः (varjitāḥ) - devoid of; क्रतवः (kratavaḥ) - sacrifices; च (ca) - and; यथा (yathā) - just as; सोमाः (somāḥ) - Soma (the ritual drink); तथा (tathā) - so; गङ्गां (gaṅgāṃ) - Ganga (the river); विना (vinā) - without; जगत् (jagat) - the world;]
(Castes and stages of life just as all one's own duty knowledge devoid of; sacrifices and just as Soma so Ganga without the world.)
Just as all castes and stages of life are devoid of knowledge of their own duty, and as sacrifices are without Soma, so is the world without the Ganga. (13-27-34)
यथा हीनं नभोऽर्केण भूः शैलैः खं च वायुना। तथा देशा दिशश्चैव गङ्गाहीना न संशयः ॥१३-२७-३५॥
yathā hīnaṃ nabho'rkeṇa bhūḥ śailaiḥ khaṃ ca vāyunā। tathā deśā diśaścaiva gaṅgāhīnā na saṃśayaḥ॥13-27-35॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; हीनं (hīnaṃ) - deprived; नभः (nabhaḥ) - sky; अर्केण (arkeṇa) - by the sun; भूः (bhūḥ) - earth; शैलैः (śailaiḥ) - by mountains; खं (khaṃ) - space; च (ca) - and; वायुना (vāyunā) - by wind; तथा (tathā) - so; देशाः (deśāḥ) - regions; दिशः (diśaḥ) - directions; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; गङ्गाहीना (gaṅgāhīnā) - deprived of Gaṅgā; न (na) - not; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(Just as deprived sky by the sun, earth by mountains, space and by wind; so regions and directions indeed deprived of Gaṅgā, not doubt.)
Just as the sky without the sun, the earth without mountains, and space without wind, so too, regions and directions without the Gaṅgā are, without doubt, incomplete. (13-27-35)
त्रिषु लोकेषु ये केचित्प्राणिनः सर्व एव ते। तर्प्यमाणाः परां तृप्तिं यान्ति गङ्गाजलैः शुभैः ॥१३-२७-३६॥

(In the three worlds, whichever living beings there are, all indeed, they, being satisfied, attain supreme satisfaction by the auspicious waters of the Ganga.)
All living beings, wherever they may be in the three worlds, when satisfied with the auspicious waters of the Ganga, attain the highest contentment. (13-27-36)
यस्तु सूर्येण निष्टप्तं गाङ्गेयं पिबते जलम्। गवां निर्हारनिर्मुक्ताद्यावकात्तद्विशिष्यते ॥१३-२७-३७॥

[यः (yaḥ) - who; तु (tu) - but; सूर्येण (sūryeṇa) - by the sun; निष्टप्तं (niṣṭaptam) - well-heated; गाङ्गेयं (gāṅgeyaṃ) - of the Ganges; पिबते (pibate) - drinks; जलम् (jalam) - water; गवां (gavām) - of cows; निर्हार (nirhāra) - removal; निर्मुक्तात् (nirmuktāt) - freed from; यावकात् (yāvakāt) - from barley; तत् (tat) - that; विशिष्यते (viśiṣyate) - excels;]
(Who but drinks water of the Ganges well-heated by the sun, that excels water freed from the removal of cows and from barley.)
But whoever drinks water of the Ganges that has been well-heated by the sun, that water surpasses even water purified by the removal of cows and barley. (13-27-37)
इन्दुव्रतसहस्रं तु चरेद्यः कायशोधनम्। पिबेद्यश्चापि गङ्गाम्भः समौ स्यातां न वा समौ ॥१३-२७-३८॥
indu-vrata-sahasraṃ tu cared yaḥ kāya-śodhanam। pibed yaś ca api gaṅgā-ambhaḥ samau syātāṃ na vā samau ॥13-27-38॥
[इन्दुव्रतसहस्रं (indu-vrata-sahasram) - thousand moon-vows; तु (tu) - but; चरेत् (caret) - should perform; यः (yaḥ) - who; कायशोधनम् (kāya-śodhanam) - body-purification; पिबेत् (pibet) - should drink; यश् (yaś) - who; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; गङ्गाम्भः (gaṅgā-ambhaḥ) - Ganga-water; समौ (samau) - both; स्यातां (syātāṃ) - may be; न (na) - not; वा (vā) - or; समौ (samau) - both;]
(Who should perform a thousand moon-vows but body-purification, and who also should drink Ganga-water, both may be or not both.)
Whether one performs a thousand moon-vows for body purification or drinks the water of the Ganga, both may or may not yield the same result. (13-27-38)
तिष्ठेद्युगसहस्रं तु पादेनैकेन यः पुमान्। मासमेकं तु गङ्गायां समौ स्यातां न वा समौ ॥१३-२७-३९॥
tiṣṭhed yugasahasraṃ tu pādenaikena yaḥ pumān। māsam ekaṃ tu gaṅgāyāṃ samau syātāṃ na vā samau ॥13-27-39॥
[तिष्ठेत् (tiṣṭhet) - should stand; युगसहस्रं (yugasahasraṃ) - a thousand ages; तु (tu) - but; पादेन (pādena) - with foot; एकेन (ekena) - one; यः (yaḥ) - who; पुमान् (pumān) - man; मासम् (māsam) - month; एकं (ekaṃ) - one; तु (tu) - but; गङ्गायाम् (gaṅgāyām) - in Gaṅgā; समौ (samau) - together (dual); स्याताम् (syātām) - may be (dual); न (na) - not; वा (vā) - or; समौ (samau) - together (dual);]
(Should stand for a thousand ages but with one foot who man; month one but in Gaṅgā together may be not or together.)
A man may stand on one foot for a thousand ages, but if two people are together in the Gaṅgā for one month, whether together or not, (the merit is greater). (13-27-39)
लम्बेतावाक्षिरा यस्तु युगानामयुतं पुमान्। तिष्ठेद्यथेष्टं यश्चापि गङ्गायां स विशिष्यते ॥१३-२७-४०॥
lambetāvākṣirā yastu yugānāmayutaṃ pumān। tiṣṭhedyatheṣṭaṃ yaścāpi gaṅgāyāṃ sa viśiṣyate ॥13-27-40॥
[लम्बेत (lambeta) - may remain suspended; अवाक्षिरा (avākṣirā) - with head downwards; यः (yaḥ) - who; तु (tu) - but; युगानाम् (yugānām) - of ages; अयुतम् (ayutam) - ten thousand; पुमान् (pumān) - a man; तिष्ठेत् (tiṣṭhet) - may stand; यथेष्टम् (yatheṣṭam) - as he wishes; यः (yaḥ) - who; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; गङ्गायाम् (gaṅgāyām) - in the Ganga; सः (saḥ) - he; विशिष्यते (viśiṣyate) - excels;]
(May remain suspended with head downwards who but for ten thousand ages a man may stand as he wishes; who also in the Ganga he excels.)
Even if a man remains suspended with his head downwards for ten thousand ages as he wishes, he who is in the Ganga excels him. (13-27-40)
अग्नौ प्राप्तं प्रधूयेत यथा तूलं द्विजोत्तम। तथा गङ्गावगाढस्य सर्वं पापं प्रधूयते ॥१३-२७-४१॥
agnau prāptaṃ pradhūyeta yathā tūlaṃ dvijottama। tathā gaṅgāvagāḍhasya sarvaṃ pāpaṃ pradhūyate ॥13-27-41॥
[अग्नौ (agnau) - in fire; प्राप्तं (prāptam) - arrived; प्रधूयेत (pradhūyeta) - is blown away; यथा (yathā) - just as; तूलं (tūlam) - cotton; द्विजोत्तम (dvijottama) - O best of twice-born; तथा (tathā) - so; गङ्गा (gaṅgā) - Ganga; अवगाढस्य (avagāḍhasya) - of one who has bathed; सर्वं (sarvam) - all; पापं (pāpam) - sin; प्रधूयते (pradhūyate) - is washed away;]
(In fire, arrived, is blown away, just as cotton, O best of twice-born; so, of Ganga-bather, all sin is washed away.)
O best of the twice-born, just as cotton that falls into fire is blown away, so too all the sins of one who bathes in the Ganga are washed away. (13-27-41)
भूतानामिह सर्वेषां दुःखोपहतचेतसाम्। गतिमन्वेषमाणानां न गङ्गासदृशी गतिः ॥१३-२७-४२॥
bhūtānāmiha sarveṣāṃ duḥkhopahatacetasām। gatimanveṣamāṇānāṃ na gaṅgāsadṛśī gatiḥ ॥13-27-42॥
[भूतानाम् (bhūtānām) - of beings; इह (iha) - here; सर्वेषाम् (sarveṣām) - of all; दुःखोपहतचेतसाम् (duḥkhopahatacetasām) - whose minds are afflicted by sorrow; गतिम् (gatim) - path; अन्वेषमाणानाम् (anveṣamāṇānām) - of those seeking; न (na) - not; गङ्गासदृशी (gaṅgāsadṛśī) - like the Gaṅgā; गतिः (gatiḥ) - path;]
(Of beings here, of all whose minds are afflicted by sorrow, of those seeking a path, not like the Gaṅgā is the path.)
For all beings here whose minds are afflicted by sorrow and who are seeking a path, there is no path like that of the Gaṅgā. (13-27-42)
भवन्ति निर्विषाः सर्पा यथा तार्क्ष्यस्य दर्शनात्। गङ्गाया दर्शनात्तद्वत्सर्वपापैः प्रमुच्यते ॥१३-२७-४३॥
bhavanti nirviṣāḥ sarpā yathā tārkṣyasya darśanāt। gaṅgāyā darśanāttadvat sarvapāpaiḥ pramucyate ॥13-27-43॥
[भवन्ति (bhavanti) - they become; निर्विषाः (nirviṣāḥ) - devoid of poison; सर्पाः (sarpāḥ) - serpents; यथा (yathā) - just as; तार्क्ष्यस्य (tārkṣyasya) - of Tārkṣya (Garuḍa); दर्शनात् (darśanāt) - from the sight; गङ्गाया (gaṅgāyā) - of Gaṅgā; दर्शनात् (darśanāt) - from the sight; तद्वत् (tadvat) - in that way; सर्वपापैः (sarvapāpaiḥ) - from all sins; प्रमुच्यते (pramucyate) - is released;]
(They become devoid of poison, serpents, just as from the sight of Tārkṣya; from the sight of Gaṅgā, in that way, from all sins, is released.)
Just as serpents become free of poison at the sight of Tārkṣya (Garuḍa), so too, by seeing the Gaṅgā, one is released from all sins. (13-27-43)
अप्रतिष्ठाश्च ये केचिदधर्मशरणाश्च ये। तेषां प्रतिष्ठा गङ्गेह शरणं शर्म वर्म च ॥१३-२७-४४॥
apratiṣṭhāś ca ye kecid adharmaśaraṇāś ca ye। teṣāṃ pratiṣṭhā gaṅgeha śaraṇaṃ śarma varma ca ॥13-27-44॥
[अप्रतिष्ठाः (apratiṣṭhāḥ) - not-established; unstable; च (ca) - and; ये (ye) - who; केचित् (kecit) - some; अधर्मशरणाः (adharmaśaraṇāḥ) - those who take refuge in unrighteousness; च (ca) - and; ये (ye) - who; तेषाम् (teṣām) - for them; प्रतिष्ठा (pratiṣṭhā) - foundation; support; गङ्गेह (gaṅgeha) - in the Ganga here; शरणम् (śaraṇam) - refuge; शर्म (śarma) - happiness; bliss; वर्म (varma) - armor; protection; च (ca) - and;]
(Not-established and who some, those who take refuge in unrighteousness and who; for them, foundation in the Ganga here, refuge, happiness, armor and.)
Those who are unstable or take refuge in unrighteousness— for them, the Ganga here is foundation, refuge, happiness, and protection. (13-27-44)
प्रकृष्टैरशुभैर्ग्रस्ताननेकैः पुरुषाधमान्। पततो नरके गङ्गा संश्रितान्प्रेत्य तारयेत् ॥१३-२७-४५॥
prakṛṣṭair aśubhair grastān anekaiḥ puruṣā-dhamān। patato narake gaṅgā saṃśritān pretya tārayet॥13-27-45॥
[प्रकृष्टैः (prakṛṣṭaiḥ) - by excessive; by very great; अशुभैः (aśubhaiḥ) - by inauspicious; by evil; ग्रस्तान् (grastān) - seized; consumed; अनेकैः (anekaiḥ) - by many; पुरुषाधमान् (puruṣā-dhamān) - lowest of men; base men; पततः (patataḥ) - falling; नरके (narake) - in hell; गङ्गा (gaṅgā) - Gaṅgā; the river Ganges; संश्रितान् (saṃśritān) - those who have taken refuge; प्रेत्य (pretya) - having died; after death; तारयेत् (tārayet) - would deliver; would save;]
(By very great evil (deeds), seized by many, the lowest of men, falling in hell, Gaṅgā, those who have taken refuge, after death, would deliver.)
Even those lowest of men, seized by many great evils and falling into hell, if they have taken refuge in Gaṅgā, she would deliver them after death. (13-27-45)
ते संविभक्ता मुनिभिर्नूनं देवैः सवासवैः। येऽभिगच्छन्ति सततं गङ्गामभिगतां सुरैः ॥१३-२७-४६॥
te saṃvibhaktā munibhir nūnaṃ devaiḥ savāsavaiḥ। ye'bhigacchanti satataṃ gaṅgām abhigatāṃ suraiḥ ॥13-27-46॥
[ते (te) - they; संविभक्ता (saṃvibhaktā) - distributed; मुनिभिः (munibhiḥ) - by sages; नूनं (nūnaṃ) - indeed; देवैः (devaiḥ) - by gods; सवासवैः (savāsavaiḥ) - with Indra and others; ये (ye) - who; अभिगच्छन्ति (abhigacchanti) - approach; सततं (satataṃ) - always; गङ्गाम् (gaṅgām) - Ganga; अभिगताम् (abhigatām) - attained; सुरैः (suraiḥ) - by gods;]
(They, distributed by sages indeed by gods with Indra and others, who approach always Ganga attained by gods.)
Those who always approach the Ganga, which has been attained by the gods, are indeed distributed by the sages and gods along with Indra and others. (13-27-46)
विनयाचारहीनाश्च अशिवाश्च नराधमाः। ते भवन्ति शिवा विप्र ये वै गङ्गां समाश्रिताः ॥१३-२७-४७॥
vinayācārahīnāś ca aśivāś ca narādhamāḥ। te bhavanti śivā vipra ye vai gaṅgāṃ samāśritāḥ॥13-27-47॥
[विनयाचारहीनाः (vinayācārahīnāḥ) - devoid of discipline and conduct; च (ca) - and; अशिवाः (aśivāḥ) - inauspicious; च (ca) - and; नराधमाः (narādhamāḥ) - lowest of men; ते (te) - they; भवन्ति (bhavanti) - become; शिवाः (śivāḥ) - auspicious; विप्र (vipra) - O brāhmaṇa; ये (ye) - who; वै (vai) - indeed; गङ्गां (gaṅgāṃ) - Ganga; समाश्रिताः (samāśritāḥ) - taken refuge in;]
(Devoid of discipline and conduct and inauspicious and lowest of men; they become auspicious, O brāhmaṇa, who indeed have taken refuge in Ganga.)
O brāhmaṇa, even those who are devoid of discipline and conduct, inauspicious, and the lowest of men, become auspicious if they have truly taken refuge in Ganga. (13-27-47)
यथा सुराणाममृतं पितॄणां च यथा स्वधा। सुधा यथा च नागानां तथा गङ्गाजलं नृणाम् ॥१३-२७-४८॥
yathā surāṇām amṛtaṃ pitṝṇāṃ ca yathā svadhā। sudhā yathā ca nāgānāṃ tathā gaṅgājalaṃ nṛṇām ॥13-27-48॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; in the manner of; सुराणाम् (surāṇām) - of the gods; अमृतम् (amṛtam) - nectar; immortality; पितॄणाम् (pitṝṇām) - of the ancestors; च (ca) - and; यथा (yathā) - just as; in the manner of; स्वधा (svadhā) - oblation; offering; सुधा (sudhā) - ambrosia; nectar; यथा (yathā) - just as; in the manner of; च (ca) - and; नागानाम् (nāgānām) - of the serpents; तथा (tathā) - so; in the same way; गङ्गाजलम् (gaṅgā-jalam) - water of the Ganga; नृणाम् (nṛṇām) - of men;]
(Just as nectar is for the gods, and just as svadhā is for the ancestors, just as sudhā is for the serpents, so is the water of the Ganga for men.)
Just as nectar is for the gods, svadhā is for the ancestors, and sudhā is for the serpents, so is the water of the Ganga for humans. (13-27-48)
उपासते यथा बाला मातरं क्षुधयार्दिताः। श्रेयस्कामास्तथा गङ्गामुपासन्तीह देहिनः ॥१३-२७-४९॥
upāsate yathā bālā mātaraṃ kṣudhayārditāḥ। śreyaskāmās tathā gaṅgām upāsantīha dehinaḥ ॥13-27-49॥
[उपासते (upāsate) - they worship; they approach; they serve; यथा (yathā) - just as; as; बाला (bālā) - children; मातरम् (mātaram) - mother; (accusative singular of mātṛ); क्षुधया (kṣudhayā) - by hunger; आर्दिताः (ārditāḥ) - afflicted; tormented; श्रेयस्कामाः (śreyaskāmāḥ) - desiring highest good; wishing for welfare; तथा (tathā) - in the same way; thus; गङ्गाम् (gaṅgām) - Gaṅgā; (accusative singular of Gaṅgā); उपासन्ति (upāsanti) - worship; approach; serve; इह (iha) - here; in this world; देहिनः (dehinaḥ) - embodied beings; living beings;]
(They worship just as children (worship) mother, afflicted by hunger; desiring highest good, in the same way, Gaṅgā (they) worship here embodied beings.)
Just as children tormented by hunger approach their mother, so too do those who desire the highest good worship the Gaṅgā here in this world. (13-27-49)
स्वायम्भुवं यथा स्थानं सर्वेषां श्रेष्ठमुच्यते। स्नातानां सरितां श्रेष्ठा गङ्गा तद्वदिहोच्यते ॥१३-२७-५०॥
svāyambhuvaṃ yathā sthānaṃ sarveṣāṃ śreṣṭham ucyate। snātānāṃ saritāṃ śreṣṭhā gaṅgā tadvad iho cyate ॥13-27-50॥
[स्वायम्भुवं (svāyambhuvam) - of Svāyambhuva; यथा (yathā) - just as; स्थानं (sthānam) - place; सर्वेषां (sarveṣām) - of all; श्रेष्ठम् (śreṣṭham) - the best; उच्यते (ucyate) - is said; स्नातानां (snātānām) - of those who have bathed; सरितां (saritām) - of rivers; श्रेष्ठा (śreṣṭhā) - the best; गङ्गा (gaṅgā) - Gaṅgā; तद्वत् (tadvat) - in that way; इह (iha) - here; उच्यते (ucyate) - is said;]
(Of Svāyambhuva just as the place of all the best is said; of those who have bathed of rivers the best Gaṅgā in that way here is said.)
Just as the place of Svāyambhuva is said to be the best among all, so among all rivers for those who bathe, Gaṅgā is said to be the best here. (13-27-50)
यथोपजीविनां धेनुर्देवादीनां धरा स्मृता। तथोपजीविनां गङ्गा सर्वप्राणभृतामिह ॥१३-२७-५१॥
yathopajīvināṃ dhenurdevādīnāṃ dharā smṛtā। tathopajīvināṃ gaṅgā sarvapraāṇabhṛtāmiha ॥13-27-51॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; in the manner; उपजीविनां (upajīvinām) - of those who subsist upon; of dependents; धेनुः (dhenuḥ) - cow; देव-आदीनां (deva-ādīnām) - of the gods and others; धरा (dharā) - the earth; स्मृता (smṛtā) - is considered; is remembered; तथा (tathā) - in the same way; thus; उपजीविनां (upajīvinām) - of those who subsist upon; of dependents; गङ्गा (gaṅgā) - Gaṅgā; the river Ganges; सर्व-प्राण-भृताम् (sarva-prāṇa-bhṛtām) - of all living beings; of all life-supporters; इह (iha) - here; in this world;]
(Just as for those who subsist, the cow is considered (the support), for the gods and others, the earth is considered (the support); in the same way, for those who subsist, Gaṅgā is (the support) of all living beings here.)
Just as the cow is regarded as the sustainer for those who depend on her, and the earth is considered the sustainer for the gods and others, in the same way, Gaṅgā is the sustainer of all living beings here. (13-27-51)
देवाः सोमार्कसंस्थानि यथा सत्रादिभिर्मखैः। अमृतान्युपजीवन्ति तथा गङ्गाजलं नराः ॥१३-२७-५२॥
devāḥ somārkasaṃsthāni yathā sattrādibhir makhaiḥ। amṛtāny upajīvanti tathā gaṅgājalaṃ narāḥ ॥13-27-52॥
[देवाः (devāḥ) - gods; सोम (soma) - soma; अर्क (arka) - sun; संस्थानि (saṃsthāni) - abodes; यथा (yathā) - just as; सत्र (satra) - sacrifice; आदिभिः (ādibhiḥ) - and others; by means of; मखैः (makhaiḥ) - by sacrifices; अमृतानि (amṛtāni) - nectar; immortal things; उपजीवन्ति (upajīvanti) - live upon; subsist; तथा (tathā) - so; in the same way; गङ्गा (gaṅgā) - Ganga; जलम् (jalam) - water; नराः (narāḥ) - men; humans;]
(gods soma sun abodes just as sacrifice and others by means of by sacrifices nectar live upon so Ganga water men.)
Just as the gods in the abodes of Soma and the Sun live upon nectar through sacrifices and the like, so do men subsist on the water of the Ganga. (13-27-52)
जाह्नवीपुलिनोत्थाभिः सिकताभिः समुक्षितः। मन्यते पुरुषोऽऽत्मानं दिविष्ठमिव शोभितम् ॥१३-२७-५३॥
jāhnavī-pulinotthābhiḥ sikatābhiḥ samukṣitaḥ। manyate puruṣo''tmānaṃ diviṣṭham iva śobhitam ॥13-27-53॥
[जाह्नवी (jāhnavī) - of the Ganges river; पुलिनोत्थाभिः (pulinotthābhiḥ) - by those arisen from the riverbank; सिकताभिः (sikatābhiḥ) - by sands; समुक्षितः (samukṣitaḥ) - covered; मन्यते (manyate) - thinks; पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - a man; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - himself; दिविष्ठम् (diviṣṭham) - as if in heaven; इव (iva) - as if; शोभितम् (śobhitam) - adorned;]
(Covered by sands arisen from the Ganges riverbank, a man thinks himself adorned as if in heaven.)
When covered with sands that have arisen from the banks of the Ganges, a man imagines himself to be adorned as if he were in heaven. (13-27-53)
जाह्नवीतीरसम्भूतां मृदं मूर्ध्ना बिभर्ति यः। बिभर्ति रूपं सोऽर्कस्य तमोनाशात्सुनिर्मलम् ॥१३-२७-५४॥
jāhnavītīrasambhūtāṃ mṛdaṃ mūrdhnā bibharti yaḥ। bibharti rūpaṃ so'rkasya tamonāśātsunirmalam ॥13-27-54॥
[जाह्नवी (jāhnavī) - of the Jahnavi (Ganga); तीर (tīra) - bank; सम्भूतां (sambhūtāṃ) - originated; मृदं (mṛdaṃ) - clay; मूर्ध्ना (mūrdhnā) - on the head; बिभर्ति (bibharti) - bears; यः (yaḥ) - who; बिभर्ति (bibharti) - bears; रूपं (rūpaṃ) - form; सः (saḥ) - he; अर्कस्य (arkasya) - of the sun; तमोनाशात् (tamonāśāt) - from the destruction of darkness; सुनिर्मलम् (sunirmalam) - very pure;]
(Who bears on the head the clay originated from the bank of Jahnavi, he bears the form of the sun, very pure from the destruction of darkness.)
He who bears on his head the clay that has originated from the bank of the Jahnavi (Ganga), bears a form as pure as the sun, purified by the destruction of darkness. (13-27-54)
गङ्गोर्मिभिरथो दिग्धः पुरुषं पवनो यदा। स्पृशते सोऽपि पाप्मानं सद्य एवापमार्जति ॥१३-२७-५५॥
gaṅgormibhiratho digdhaḥ puruṣaṃ pavano yadā। spṛśate so'pi pāpmānaṃ sadya evapamārjati ॥13-27-55॥
[गङ्गा (gaṅgā) - Gaṅgā; (the river Ganga); ऊर्मिभिः (ūrmibhiḥ) - with waves; अथ (atha) - then; दिग्धः (digdhaḥ) - smeared; पुरुषं (puruṣam) - man; पवनः (pavanaḥ) - wind; यदा (yadā) - when; स्पृशते (spṛśate) - touches; सः (saḥ) - he; अपि (api) - also; पाप्मानं (pāpmānam) - sin; सद्यः (sadyaḥ) - immediately; एव (eva) - indeed; अपमार्जति (apamārjati) - wipes away;]
(When the wind, having touched a man smeared with the waves of Gaṅgā, also touches (him), he immediately indeed wipes away sin.)
When the wind touches a man who has been smeared by the waves of the Gaṅgā, it also instantly removes his sin. (13-27-55)
व्यसनैरभितप्तस्य नरस्य विनशिष्यतः। गङ्गादर्शनजा प्रीतिर्व्यसनान्यपकर्षति ॥१३-२७-५६॥
vyasanair abhitaptasya narasya vinaśiṣyataḥ। gaṅgādarśanajā prītir vyasanāny apakarṣati ॥13-27-56॥
[व्यसनैः (vyasanair) - by afflictions; अभितप्तस्य (abhitaptasya) - of one greatly tormented; नरस्य (narasya) - of the man; विनशिष्यतः (vinaśiṣyataḥ) - perishing; गङ्गा (gaṅgā) - Gaṅgā; दर्शनजा (darśanajā) - arising from seeing; प्रीतिः (prītiḥ) - delight; व्यसनानि (vyasanāni) - afflictions; अपकर्षति (apakarṣati) - removes;]
(By afflictions, of one greatly tormented, of the man, perishing, Gaṅgā, arising from seeing, delight, afflictions, removes.)
The delight arising from seeing the Gaṅgā removes the afflictions of a man greatly tormented and perishing by misfortunes. (13-27-56)
हंसारावैः कोकरवै रवैरन्यैश्च पक्षिणाम्। पस्पर्ध गङ्गा गन्धर्वान्पुलिनैश्च शिलोच्चयान् ॥१३-२७-५७॥
haṃsārāvaiḥ kokaravaiḥ ravair anyaiś ca pakṣiṇām। paspardha gaṅgā gandharvān pulinaiś ca śilocchayān ॥13-27-57॥

न सा प्रीतिर्दिविष्ठस्य सर्वकामानुपाश्नतः। अभवद्या परा प्रीतिर्गङ्गायाः पुलिने नृणाम् ॥१३-२७-५९॥

वाङ्मनःकर्मजैर्ग्रस्तः पापैरपि पुमानिह। वीक्ष्य गङ्गां भवेत्पूतस्तत्र मे नास्ति संशयः ॥१३-२७-६०॥

(Even a man here afflicted by sins born of speech, mind, and actions, having seen Ganga, becomes purified; there is not to me doubt.)

सप्तावरान्सप्त परान्पितॄंस्तेभ्यश्च ये परे। पुमांस्तारयते गङ्गां वीक्ष्य स्पृष्ट्वावगाह्य च ॥१३-२७-६१॥

(Seven immediate ancestors, seven remote ancestors, fathers (ancestors), and those who are further than them; a man causes to cross (liberates) by having seen, touched, and bathed in the Gaṅgā.)
By seeing, touching, and bathing in the Gaṅgā, a man liberates seven immediate ancestors, seven remote ancestors, his fathers, and even those beyond them. (13-27-61)
श्रुताभिलषिता दृष्टा स्पृष्टा पीतावगाहिता। गङ्गा तारयते नॄणामुभौ वंशौ विशेषतः ॥१३-२७-६२॥
śrutābhilaṣitā dṛṣṭā spṛṣṭā pītāvgāhitā। gaṅgā tārayate nṝṇām ubhau vaṃśau viśeṣataḥ ॥13-27-62॥

Whether heard of, desired, seen, touched, drunk, or bathed in, the Gaṅgā especially liberates both the paternal and maternal lineages of men. (13-27-62)
दर्शनात्स्पर्शनात्पानात्तथा गङ्गेति कीर्तनात्। पुनात्यपुण्यान्पुरुषाञ्शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः ॥१३-२७-६३॥
darśanāt sparśanāt pānāt tathā gaṅgeti kīrtanāt। punāty apuṇyān puruṣān śataśo 'tha sahasraśaḥ ॥13-27-63॥

ya icchetsaphalaṃ janma jīvitaṃ śrutameva ca। sa pitṝṃstarpayedgaṅgāmabhigamya surāṃstathā ॥13-27-64॥

(Who should desire fruitful birth, life, and learning indeed and, he should satisfy ancestors, having approached Ganga, and also gods.)
Whoever desires that his birth, life, and learning be fruitful, should approach the Ganga and satisfy his ancestors and also the gods. (13-27-64)
न सुतैर्न च वित्तेन कर्मणा न च तत्फलम्। प्राप्नुयात्पुरुषोऽत्यन्तं गङ्गां प्राप्य यदाप्नुयात् ॥१३-२७-६५॥
na sutair na ca vittena karmaṇā na ca tatphalam। prāpnuyāt puruṣo 'tyantaṃ gaṅgāṃ prāpya yad āpnuyāt ॥13-27-65॥

(Not by sons, not and by wealth, by action, not and that fruit may attain a man completely, having obtained Ganga, which may attain.)
A man cannot attain, by sons, nor by wealth, nor by actions, nor by the fruit thereof, that which he attains completely by reaching the Ganga. (13-27-65)
जात्यन्धैरिह तुल्यास्ते मृतैः पङ्गुभिरेव च। समर्था ये न पश्यन्ति गङ्गां पुण्यजलां शिवाम् ॥१३-२७-६६॥
jātyandhairiha tulyāste mṛtaiḥ paṅgubhireva ca। samarthā ye na paśyanti gaṅgāṃ puṇyajalāṃ śivām ॥13-27-66॥

(They here are equal to those blind by birth, with the dead and with the crippled indeed and, who, though capable, do not see Gaṅgā, whose water is holy and auspicious.)
Here, those who, though capable, do not see the Gaṅgā, whose water is holy and auspicious, are equal to the congenitally blind, the dead, and the crippled. (13-27-66)
भूतभव्यभविष्यज्ञैर्महर्षिभिरुपस्थिताम्। देवैः सेन्द्रैश्च को गङ्गां नोपसेवेत मानवः ॥१३-२७-६७॥
bhūtabhavyabhaviṣyajñairmaharṣibhirupasthitām। devaiḥ sendraiśca ko gaṅgāṃ nopaseveta mānavaḥ ॥13-27-67॥

(By the knowers of past, future, and what is to come, by great seers attended, by gods with Indra and also, who man would not serve Ganga?)
Who is the man that would not worship Ganga, attended by great seers who know the past, future, and what is to come, and by gods together with Indra? (13-27-67)
वानप्रस्थैर्गृहस्थैश्च यतिभिर्ब्रह्मचारिभिः। विद्यावद्भिः श्रितां गङ्गां पुमान्को नाम नाश्रयेत् ॥१३-२७-६८॥
vānaprasthair gṛhasthaiś ca yatibhir brahmacāribhiḥ। vidyāvadbhiḥ śritāṃ gaṅgāṃ pumān ko nāma nāśrayet ॥13-27-68॥
[वानप्रस्थैः (vānaprasthaiḥ) - by forest-dwellers; गृहस्थैः (gṛhasthaiḥ) - by householders; च (ca) - and; यतिभिः (yatibhiḥ) - by ascetics; ब्रह्मचारिभिः (brahmacāribhiḥ) - by celibate students; विद्यावद्भिः (vidyāvadbhiḥ) - by those possessing knowledge; श्रितां (śritām) - resorted to; गङ्गां (gaṅgāṃ) - Ganga; पुमान् (pumān) - man; कः (kaḥ) - who; नाम (nāma) - indeed; न (na) - not; आश्रयेत् (āśrayet) - would resort to;]
(By forest-dwellers, by householders, and by ascetics, by celibate students, by those possessing knowledge, the Ganga who is resorted to—what man indeed would not resort to (her)?)
When the Ganga, who is resorted to by forest-dwellers, householders, ascetics, celibate students, and those possessing knowledge, who indeed would not seek refuge in her? (13-27-68)
उत्क्रामद्भिश्च यः प्राणैः प्रयतः शिष्टसंमतः। चिन्तयेन्मनसा गङ्गां स गतिं परमां लभेत् ॥१३-२७-६९॥
utkrāmadbhiś ca yaḥ prāṇaiḥ prayataḥ śiṣṭasaṁmataḥ। cintayen manasā gaṅgāṁ sa gatiṁ paramāṁ labhet ॥13-27-69॥
[उत्क्रामद्भिः (utkrāmadbhiḥ) - by those departing; च (ca) - and; यः (yaḥ) - who; प्राणैः (prāṇaiḥ) - with life-breaths; प्रयतः (prayataḥ) - pure; शिष्टसंमतः (śiṣṭasaṁmataḥ) - approved by the virtuous; चिन्तयेत् (cintayet) - should meditate; मनसा (manasā) - with the mind; गङ्गां (gaṅgāṁ) - Ganga; स (sa) - he; गतिं (gatiṁ) - state; परमां (paramāṁ) - supreme; लभेत् (labhet) - attains;]
(By those departing and who, with life-breaths, pure, approved by the virtuous, should meditate with the mind on Ganga, he attains the supreme state.)
Whoever, at the time of departing, with pure life-breaths and approved by the virtuous, meditates on Ganga with the mind, he attains the supreme state. (13-27-69)
न भयेभ्यो भयं तस्य न पापेभ्यो न राजतः। आ देहपतनाद्गङ्गामुपास्ते यः पुमानिह ॥१३-२७-७०॥
na bhayebhyo bhayaṃ tasya na pāpebhyo na rājataḥ। ā deha-patanād gaṅgām upāste yaḥ pumān iha ॥13-27-70॥
[न (na) - not; भयेभ्यः (bhayebhyaḥ) - from fears; भयं (bhayam) - fear; तस्य (tasya) - of him; न (na) - not; पापेभ्यः (pāpebhyaḥ) - from sins; न (na) - not; राजतः (rājataḥ) - from the king; आ (ā) - until; देहपतनात् (deha-patanāt) - from the fall of the body; गङ्गाम् (gaṅgām) - Ganga; उपास्ते (upāste) - worships; यः (yaḥ) - who; पुमान् (pumān) - man; इह (iha) - here;]
(Not from fears, fear for him; not from sins, not from the king; until the fall of the body, Ganga worships who man here.)
He who worships the Ganga here until the fall of his body has no fear from fears, nor from sins, nor from the king. (13-27-70)
गगनाद्यां महापुण्यां पतन्तीं वै महेश्वरः। दधार शिरसा देवीं तामेव दिवि सेवते ॥१३-२७-७१॥
gaganādyāṃ mahāpuṇyāṃ patantīṃ vai maheśvaraḥ। dadhāra śirasā devīṃ tāmeva divi sevate ॥13-27-71॥
[गगनाद्यां (gaganādyām) - from the sky; (gagana - sky; ādyām - from, beginning in;) महापुण्यां (mahāpuṇyām) - greatly meritorious; (mahā - great; puṇyām - meritorious;) पतन्तीं (patantīm) - falling; (patantīm - falling;) वै (vai) - indeed; महेश्वरः (maheśvaraḥ) - the great lord; (maha - great; īśvaraḥ - lord;) दधार (dadhāra) - held; (dadhāra - held;) शिरसा (śirasā) - with (his) head; (śirasā - with head;) देवीं (devīm) - the goddess; (devīm - goddess;) तामेव (tāmeva) - her only; (tām - her; eva - only;) दिवि (divi) - in heaven; (divi - in heaven;) सेवते (sevate) - serves; (sevate - serves;);]
(From the sky, the greatly meritorious, falling (one), indeed, the great lord held with (his) head the goddess; her only in heaven (he) serves.)
The great lord indeed held with his head the greatly meritorious goddess as she fell from the sky; he alone serves her in heaven. (13-27-71)
अलङ्कृतास्त्रयो लोकाः पथिभिर्विमलैस्त्रिभिः। यस्तु तस्या जलं सेवेत्कृतकृत्यः पुमान्भवेत् ॥१३-२७-७२॥
alaṅkṛtās trayo lokāḥ pathibhir vimalais tribhiḥ। yas tu tasyā jalaṃ seveta kṛtakṛtyaḥ pumān bhavet ॥13-27-72॥
[अलङ्कृताः (alaṅkṛtāḥ) - adorned; ornamented; त्रयः (trayaḥ) - three; लोकाः (lokāḥ) - worlds; पथिभिः (pathibhiḥ) - by the paths; विमलैः (vimalaiḥ) - pure; spotless; त्रिभिः (tribhiḥ) - by three; यः (yaḥ) - who; तु (tu) - but; तस्या (tasyā) - of her; of that; जलम् (jalam) - water; सेवेत (seveta) - should serve; should use; कृतकृत्यः (kṛtakṛtyaḥ) - one who has accomplished his purpose; पुमान् (pumān) - man; भवेत् (bhavet) - becomes; would be;]
(Adorned three worlds by the pure paths three; who but of her water should use, accomplished his purpose man becomes.)
The three worlds are adorned by the three pure paths; but the man who uses her water becomes one who has accomplished his purpose. (13-27-72)
दिवि ज्योतिर्यथादित्यः पितॄणां चैव चन्द्रमाः। देवेशश्च यथा नॄणां गङ्गेह सरितां तथा ॥१३-२७-७३॥
divi jyotiryathādityaḥ pitṝṇāṃ caiva candramāḥ। deveśaśca yathā nṝṇāṃ gaṅgeha saritāṃ tathā ॥13-27-73॥
[दिवि (divi) - in the sky; ज्योतिः (jyotiḥ) - light; यथा (yathā) - just as; आदित्यः (ādityaḥ) - the sun; पितॄणां (pitṝṇāṃ) - of the ancestors; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; चन्द्रमाः (candramāḥ) - the moon; देवेशः (deveśaḥ) - lord of the gods; च (ca) - and; यथा (yathā) - just as; नॄणां (nṝṇāṃ) - of men; गङ्गे (gaṅge) - O Gaṅgā; इह (iha) - here; सरितां (saritāṃ) - of rivers; तथा (tathā) - so;]
(In the sky, the light just as the sun; of the ancestors and indeed the moon; the lord of the gods and just as of men, O Gaṅgā, here of rivers, so.)
Just as the sun is the light in the sky, and the moon is for the ancestors, and the lord of the gods is for men, so, O Gaṅgā, you are among rivers here. (13-27-73)
मात्रा पित्रा सुतैर्दारैर्वियुक्तस्य धनेन वा। न भवेद्धि तथा दुःखं यथा गङ्गावियोगजम् ॥१३-२७-७४॥
mātrā pitrā sutair dārair viyuktasya dhanena vā। na bhaved dhi tathā duḥkhaṃ yathā gaṅgā-viyogajam ॥13-27-74॥
[मात्रा (mātrā) - by mother; पित्रा (pitrā) - by father; सुतैः (sutaiḥ) - by sons; दारैः (dārair) - by wives; वियुक्तस्य (viyuktasya) - of one separated; धनेन (dhanena) - by wealth; वा (vā) - or; न (na) - not; भवेत् (bhavet) - arises; हि (hi) - indeed; तथा (tathā) - in that way; दुःखं (duḥkhaṃ) - sorrow; यथा (yathā) - as; गङ्गा-वियोगजम् (gaṅgā-viyogajam) - arising from separation from Gaṅgā;]
(By mother, by father, by sons, by wives, of one separated, by wealth or; not arises indeed in that way sorrow as arising from separation from Gaṅgā.)
The sorrow that arises from separation from Gaṅgā is not equaled by that caused by separation from mother, father, sons, wives, or even by wealth. (13-27-74)
नारण्यैर्नेष्टविषयैर्न सुतैर्न धनागमैः। तथा प्रसादो भवति गङ्गां वीक्ष्य यथा नृणाम् ॥१३-२७-७५॥
nāraṇyair neṣṭaviṣayair na sutair na dhanāgamaiḥ। tathā prasādo bhavati gaṅgāṃ vīkṣya yathā nṛṇām ॥13-27-75॥
[नारण्यैः (nāraṇyaiḥ) - by forests; by wildernesses; नेष्टविषयैः (neṣṭaviṣayaiḥ) - by desired objects; by pleasing enjoyments; न (na) - not; सुतैः (sutaiḥ) - by sons; न (na) - not; धनागमैः (dhanāgamaiḥ) - by acquisitions of wealth; तथा (tathā) - thus; in that way; प्रसादः (prasādaḥ) - tranquility; serenity; grace; भवति (bhavati) - arises; becomes; गङ्गाम् (gaṅgām) - Ganga; the river Ganges; वीक्ष्य (vīkṣya) - having seen; upon seeing; यथा (yathā) - as; just as; नृणाम् (nṛṇām) - of men; of people;]
(By forests, by desired objects, not by sons, not by acquisitions of wealth, thus tranquility arises upon seeing Ganga, as (it does) for men.)
Tranquility does not arise for people from forests, desired enjoyments, sons, or acquisitions of wealth, but just as it does when men behold the Ganga, so does serenity arise. (13-27-75)
पूर्णमिन्दुं यथा दृष्ट्वा नृणां दृष्टिः प्रसीदति। गङ्गां त्रिपथगां दृष्ट्वा तथा दृष्टिः प्रसीदति ॥१३-२७-७६॥
pūrṇam induṃ yathā dṛṣṭvā nṛṇāṃ dṛṣṭiḥ prasīdati। gaṅgāṃ tripathagāṃ dṛṣṭvā tathā dṛṣṭiḥ prasīdati ॥13-27-76॥

(Just as, having seen the full moon, the sight of men becomes pleased; having seen Ganga, the three-path-goer, in the same way, the sight becomes pleased. (13-27-76))
Just as, upon seeing the full moon, people's eyes are delighted, so too, upon seeing Ganga, the threefold-flowing river, their sight is gladdened. (13-27-76)
तद्भावस्तद्गतमनास्तन्निष्ठस्तत्परायणः। गङ्गां योऽनुगतो भक्त्या स तस्याः प्रियतां व्रजेत् ॥१३-२७-७७॥
tadbhāvas tadgatamanās tanniṣṭhas tatparāyaṇaḥ। gaṅgāṃ yo'nugato bhaktyā sa tasyāḥ priyatāṃ vrajet ॥13-27-77॥
[तद्भावः (tadbhāvaḥ) - he whose nature is that; तद्गतमनाः (tadgatamanāḥ) - whose mind is absorbed in that; तन्निष्ठः (tanniṣṭhaḥ) - steadfast in that; तत्परायणः (tatparāyaṇaḥ) - having that as the supreme goal; गङ्गाम् (gaṅgām) - Ganga; यः (yaḥ) - who; अनुगतः (anugataḥ) - has followed; भक्त्या (bhaktyā) - with devotion; सः (saḥ) - he; तस्याः (tasyāḥ) - of her; प्रियतम् (priyatām) - dearness; व्रजेत् (vrajet) - may attain;]
(He whose nature is that, whose mind is absorbed in that, steadfast in that, having that as the supreme goal, who has followed Ganga with devotion, he may attain dearness of her.)
He whose nature, mind, steadfastness, and supreme goal are all fixed on that, and who follows the Ganga with devotion, may attain her dearness. (13-27-77)
भूःस्थैः खस्थैर्दिविष्ठैश्च भूतैरुच्चावचैरपि। गङ्गा विगाह्या सततमेतत्कार्यतमं सताम् ॥१३-२७-७८॥
bhūḥsthaiḥ khasthair diviṣṭhaiś ca bhūtair uccāvacair api। gaṅgā vigāhyā satatam etat kāryatamaṃ satām ॥13-27-78॥
[भूःस्थैः (bhūḥsthaiḥ) - by those abiding on earth; खस्थैः (khasthaiḥ) - by those abiding in the sky; दिविष्ठैः (diviṣṭhaiḥ) - by those abiding in heaven; च (ca) - and; भूतैः (bhūtaiḥ) - by beings; उच्चावचैः (uccāvacaiḥ) - by those of high and low (status); अपि (api) - also; गङ्गा (gaṅgā) - Gaṅgā; विगाह्या (vigāhyā) - having entered; सततम् (satatam) - always; एतत् (etat) - this; कार्यतमं (kāryatamaṃ) - the best action; सताम् (satām) - of the good;]
(By those abiding on earth, by those abiding in the sky, by those abiding in heaven, and by beings of high and low (status) also, having entered Gaṅgā, always this is the best action of the good.)
For those who dwell on earth, in the sky, or in heaven, and for all beings of every status, entering the Gaṅgā is always considered the highest act for the virtuous. (13-27-78)
त्रिषु लोकेषु पुण्यत्वाद्गङ्गायाः प्रथितं यशः। यत्पुत्रान्सगरस्यैषा भस्माख्याननयद्दिवम् ॥१३-२७-७९॥
triṣu lokeṣu puṇyatvād gaṅgāyāḥ prathitaṃ yaśaḥ। yat putrān sagarasya eṣā bhasmākhyān anayad divam ॥13-27-79॥
[त्रिषु (triṣu) - in the three; लोकेषु (lokeṣu) - worlds; पुण्यत्वात् (puṇyatvāt) - because of holiness; गङ्गायाः (gaṅgāyāḥ) - of Gaṅgā; प्रथितं (prathitam) - renowned; यशः (yaśaḥ) - fame; यत् (yat) - which; पुत्रान् (putrān) - sons; सगरस्य (sagarasya) - of Sagara; एषा (eṣā) - this; भस्माख्यान (bhasmākhyān) - called ashes; अनयत् (anayat) - led; दिवम् (divam) - to heaven;]
(In the three worlds, because of holiness, of Gaṅgā, renowned fame (is there); which sons of Sagara, this (Gaṅgā), called ashes, led to heaven.)
Because of its holiness, Gaṅgā's fame is renowned in the three worlds; for it was this river that led the sons of Sagara, who were known as ashes, to heaven. (13-27-79)
वाय्वीरिताभिः सुमहास्वनाभि; र्द्रुताभिरत्यर्थसमुच्छ्रिताभिः। गङ्गोर्मिभिर्भानुमतीभिरिद्धः; सहस्ररश्मिप्रतिमो विभाति ॥१३-२७-८०॥

(By wind set in motion, with very great sound, swift, exceedingly highly raised, by the waves of the Ganga, resplendent, inflamed, like the thousand-rayed (sun), shines.)

पयस्विनीं घृतिनीमत्युदारां; समृद्धिनीं वेगिनीं दुर्विगाह्याम्। गङ्गां गत्वा यैः शरीरं विसृष्टं; गता धीरास्ते विबुधैः समत्वम् ॥१३-२७-८१॥

(Abounding in water, rich in ghee, very generous, abundant, swift, difficult to cross, Ganga; having gone, by whom, body, abandoned; have gone, steadfast ones, they, with the gods, equality.)
Those steadfast ones who, having gone to the Ganga—abounding in water, rich in ghee, very generous, abundant, swift, and difficult to cross—and abandoned their bodies, have attained equality with the gods. (13-27-81)
अन्धाञ्जडान्द्रव्यहीनांश्च गङ्गा; यशस्विनी बृहती विश्वरूपा। देवैः सेन्द्रैर्मुनिभिर्मानवैश्च; निषेविता सर्वकामैर्युनक्ति ॥१३-२७-८२॥
andhāñ jaḍān dravyahīnāṁś ca gaṅgā; yaśasvinī bṛhatī viśvarūpā. devaiḥ sendrair munibhir mānavaiś ca; niṣevitā sarvakāmair yunakti ॥13-27-82॥
[अन्धान् (andhān) - the blind ones; जडान् (jaḍān) - the dull ones; द्रव्यहीनान् (dravyahīnān) - those lacking wealth; च (ca) - and; गङ्गा (gaṅgā) - Gaṅgā; यशस्विनी (yaśasvinī) - the illustrious one; बृहती (bṛhatī) - the great one; विश्वरूपा (viśvarūpā) - of universal form; देवैः (devaiḥ) - by the gods; सेन्द्रैः (sendrair) - with Indra; मुनिभिः (munibhiḥ) - by sages; मानवैः (mānavaiḥ) - by men; च (ca) - and; निषेविता (niṣevitā) - served; सर्वकामैः (sarvakāmaiḥ) - with all desires; युनक्ति (yunakti) - unites;]
(Gaṅgā, the illustrious, the great, of universal form, serves the blind, the dull, and those lacking wealth; served by the gods with Indra, by sages and men, she unites with all desires.)
Gaṅgā, the illustrious and great river of universal form, serves the blind, the dull, and the poor; worshipped by gods along with Indra, by sages and by men, she fulfills all desires. (13-27-82)
ऊर्जावतीं मधुमतीं महापुण्यां त्रिवर्त्मगाम्। त्रिलोकगोप्त्रीं ये गङ्गां संश्रितास्ते दिवं गताः ॥१३-२७-८३॥
ūrjāvatīṃ madhumatīṃ mahāpuṇyāṃ trivartmagām। trilokagoptrīṃ ye gaṅgāṃ saṃśritās te divaṃ gatāḥ ॥13-27-83॥

(Possessing strength, full of sweetness, of great merit, going in three paths, protector of the three worlds, who have taken refuge in Ganga, they have gone to heaven.)
Those who have taken refuge in Ganga, who is strong, sweet, greatly meritorious, flowing in three courses, and the protector of the three worlds, they have attained heaven. (13-27-83)
यो वत्स्यति द्रक्ष्यति वापि मर्त्य; स्तस्मै प्रयच्छन्ति सुखानि देवाः। तद्भाविताः स्पर्शने दर्शने य; स्तस्मै देवा गतिमिष्टां दिशन्ति ॥१३-२७-८४॥
yo vatsyati drakṣyati vāpi martya; stasmai prayacchanti sukhāni devāḥ. tadbhāvitāḥ sparśane darśane ya; stasmai devā gatimiṣṭāṃ diśanti ॥13-27-84॥
[यो (yaḥ) - who; वत्स्यति (vatsyati) - will dwell; द्रक्ष्यति (drakṣyati) - will see; वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - even; मर्त्यः (martyaḥ) - mortal; तस्मै (tasmai) - to him; प्रयच्छन्ति (prayacchanti) - they bestow; सुखानि (sukhāni) - pleasures; देवाः (devāḥ) - gods; तद्भाविताः (tadbhāvitāḥ) - absorbed in that; स्पर्शने (sparśane) - in touching; दर्शने (darśane) - in seeing; यः (yaḥ) - who; तस्मै (tasmai) - to him; देवाः (devāḥ) - gods; गतिम् (gatim) - path; इष्टाम् (iṣṭām) - desired; दिशन्ति (diśanti) - they show;]
(Who will dwell, will see, or even mortal; to him the gods bestow pleasures. Absorbed in that, in touching, in seeing, who; to him the gods show the desired path. (13-27-84))

दक्षां पृथ्वीं बृहतीं विप्रकृष्टां; शिवामृतां सुरसां सुप्रसन्नाम्। विभावरीं सर्वभूतप्रतिष्ठां; गङ्गां गता ये त्रिदिवं गतास्ते ॥१३-२७-८५॥

(Skilful, broad, great, very distant, auspicious and immortal, divine, very clear, night, foundation of all beings, Gaṅgā—gone, those who, heaven, gone, they.)
Those who have gone to the Gaṅgā, which is skilful, broad, great, very distant, auspicious and immortal, divine, very clear, the night, and the foundation of all beings, they have gone to heaven. (13-27-85)
ख्यातिर्यस्याः खं दिवं गां च नित्यं; पुरा दिशो विदिशश्चावतस्थे। तस्या जलं सेव्य सरिद्वराया; मर्त्याः सर्वे कृतकृत्या भवन्ति ॥१३-२७-८६॥
khyātiryasyāḥ khaṃ divaṃ gāṃ ca nityaṃ; purā diśo vidiśaścāvatasthe. tasyā jalaṃ sevya saridvarāyā; martyāḥ sarve kṛtakṛtyā bhavanti ॥13-27-86॥

(Fame of which sky, heaven, earth and always; formerly directions and intermediate directions pervaded. Of that water to be served of the best river; mortals all having accomplished their purpose become. (13-27-86))

(This, as Ganga, certainly foundation; of Guha, of the golden one and womb-woman; morning three-path, ghee-carrying, sinless; descended as Ganga, from the sky, all-waters. (13-27-87))
This is certainly the foundation called Ganga; she is the womb-woman of Guha and the golden one. In the morning, she has three courses, carries ghee, is sinless; descended as Ganga, from the sky, containing all waters. (13-27-87)
सुतावनीध्रस्य हरस्य भार्या; दिवो भुवश्चापि कक्ष्यानुरूपा। भव्या पृथिव्या भाविनी भाति राज; न्गङ्गा लोकानां पुण्यदा वै त्रयाणाम् ॥१३-२७-८८॥
sutāvanīdhrasya harasya bhāryā; divo bhuvaścāpi kakṣyānurūpā। bhavyā pṛthivyā bhāvinī bhāti rāja; ngaṅgā lokānāṃ puṇyadā vai trayāṇām ॥13-27-88॥

(Of Sutāvanīdhra, of Hara, wife; of heaven, of earth and also region suitable; auspicious, of the earth, existing, shines, O king; Gaṅgā, of the worlds, giver of merit, indeed, of the three.)
O king, Gaṅgā, the wife of Hara and of Sutāvanīdhra, is suitable to the regions of heaven and earth; she is auspicious, existing on earth, and shines as the giver of merit to the three worlds. (13-27-88)
मधुप्रवाहा घृतरागोद्धृताभि; र्महोर्मिभिः शोभिता ब्राह्मणैश्च। दिवश्च्युता शिरसात्ता भवेन; गङ्गावनीध्रास्त्रिदिवस्य माला ॥१३-२७-८९॥

(With honey-flows, with clarified-butter-red (waves) raised, with great waves, adorned by Brāhmaṇas; fallen from heaven, having been by the head of Bhava (Śiva), Gaṅgā, the mountains, garland of the third heaven.)
The Gaṅgā, with streams of honey and waves tinged with clarified butter, adorned by great waves and Brāhmaṇas, having fallen from heaven and been received on the head of Bhava (Śiva), became the garland of the mountains and of the third heaven. (13-27-89)
योनिर्वरिष्ठा विरजा वितन्वी; शुष्मा इरा वारिवहा यशोदा। विश्वावती चाकृतिरिष्टिरिद्धा; गङ्गोक्षितानां भुवनस्य पन्थाः ॥१३-२७-९०॥

ऋषिष्टुतां विष्णुपदीं पुराणीं; सुपुण्यतोयां मनसापि लोके। सर्वात्मना जाह्नवीं ये प्रपन्ना; स्ते ब्रह्मणः सदनं सम्प्रयाताः ॥१३-२७-९२॥
ṛṣi-stutāṃ viṣṇu-padīṃ purāṇīṃ; su-puṇya-toyāṃ manasā api loke. sarvātmanā jāhnavīṃ ye prapannāḥ; te brahmaṇaḥ sadanaṃ samprayātāḥ ॥13-27-92॥
[ऋषि (ṛṣi) - sage; स्तुतां (stutāṃ) - praised; विष्णु (viṣṇu) - Viṣṇu; पदीं (padīṃ) - having the feet; (i.e., associated with the feet;) पुराणीं (purāṇīṃ) - ancient; सुपुण्य (su-puṇya) - very holy; तोयां (toyāṃ) - water; मनसा (manasā) - by mind; अपि (api) - even; लोके (loke) - in the world; सर्वात्मना (sarvātmanā) - with the whole self; जाह्नवीं (jāhnavīṃ) - Jāhnavī (Gaṅgā); ये (ye) - who; प्रपन्नाः (prapannāḥ) - have surrendered; स्ते (te) - they; ब्रह्मणः (brahmaṇaḥ) - of Brahman; सदनं (sadanaṃ) - abode; सम्प्रयाताः (samprayātāḥ) - have gone;]
(The ancient Viṣṇu-footed (Gaṅgā), praised by sages, whose water is very holy; even by mind in the world. Those who have surrendered to Jāhnavī (Gaṅgā) with the whole self, they have gone to the abode of Brahman. (13-27-92))
The ancient river Gaṅgā, praised by sages and sanctified by Viṣṇu's feet, whose waters are supremely holy—even remembering her in this world with the mind is meritorious. Whoever surrenders themselves completely to Jāhnavī (Gaṅgā), they reach the abode of Brahman. (13-27-92)
लोकानिमान्नयति या जननीव पुत्रा; न्सर्वात्मना सर्वगुणोपपन्ना। स्वस्थानमिष्टमिह ब्राह्ममभीप्समानै; र्गङ्गा सदैवात्मवशैरुपास्या ॥१३-२७-९३॥

(Who leads these worlds like a mother (leads) sons, with all (her) being, endowed with all virtues; Gaṅgā, always to be worshipped by those desiring the desired own abode here, the divine, by self-control.)
Gaṅgā, who leads these worlds like a mother leads her sons, endowed with all virtues and with her whole being, is always to be worshipped by those who desire the divine and their own desired abode here, through self-control. (13-27-93)
उस्रां जुष्टां मिषतीं विश्वतोया; मिरां वज्रीं रेवतीं भूधराणाम्। शिष्टाश्रयाममृतां ब्रह्मकान्तां; गङ्गां श्रयेदात्मवान्सिद्धिकामः ॥१३-२७-९४॥

(Radiant, favored, shining, having water everywhere; pure, powerful, abundant, of the mountains. Resorting to by the noble, immortal, beloved of Brahman; Gaṅgā should be resorted to by the self-possessed desiring success. (13-27-94))
One who is self-possessed and desires success should resort to Gaṅgā, who is radiant, favored, shining, all-watering; pure, powerful, abundant, belonging to the mountains, sought by the noble, immortal, and beloved of Brahman. (13-27-94)
प्रसाद्य देवान्सविभून्समस्ता; न्भगीरथस्तपसोग्रेण गङ्गाम्। गामानयत्तामभिगम्य शश्व; न्पुमान्भयं नेह नामुत्र विद्यात् ॥१३-२७-९५॥
prasādya devān-savibhūn-samastān; bhagīrathas-tapasogreṇa gaṅgām. gām ānayat tām abhigamya śaśvan; pumān bhayaṃ neha nāmutra vidyāt ॥13-27-95॥
[प्रसाद्य (prasādya) - having propitiated; देवान् (devān) - the gods; सविभून् (savibhūn) - with all the lords; समस्तान् (samastān) - all; भगीरथः (bhagīrathaḥ) - Bhagīratha; तपसः (tapasah) - of austerity; उग्रेण (ugreṇa) - by severe; गङ्गाम् (gaṅgām) - Gaṅgā; गाम् (gām) - the earth; आनयत् (ānayat) - brought; ताम् (tām) - her; अभिगम्य (abhigamya) - having approached; शश्वन् (śaśvan) - always; पुमान् (pumān) - a man; भयम् (bhayam) - fear; न (na) - not; इह (iha) - here; न (na) - not; अमुत्र (amutra) - there (in the other world); विद्यात् (vidyāt) - should experience;]
(Having propitiated all the gods with all the lords, Bhagīratha by severe austerity brought Gaṅgā to the earth; having approached her, always a man should not experience fear here nor there.)
After propitiating all the gods and lords, Bhagīratha, through severe austerity, brought Gaṅgā to the earth; whoever approaches her should never experience fear either in this world or the next. (13-27-95)
उदाहृतः सर्वथा ते गुणानां; मयैकदेशः प्रसमीक्ष्य बुद्ध्या। शक्तिर्न मे काचिदिहास्ति वक्तुं; गुणान्सर्वान्परिमातुं तथैव ॥१३-२७-९६॥
udāhṛtaḥ sarvathā te guṇānāṃ; mayaikadeśaḥ prasamīkṣya buddhyā। śaktir na me kācid iha asti vaktum; guṇān sarvān parimātuṃ tathaiva ॥13-27-96॥

(Declared in every way your qualities; by me a part having considered with intellect. Power not my any here is to speak; qualities all to measure just so. (13-27-96))

मेरोः समुद्रस्य च सर्वरत्नैः; सङ्ख्योपलानामुदकस्य वापि। वक्तुं शक्यं नेह गङ्गाजलानां; गुणाख्यानं परिमातुं तथैव ॥१३-२७-९७॥

(Of Meru, of the ocean and by all jewels; of the counted stones, of water or even; to speak is possible, not here, of the waters of the Ganga; the description of qualities, to measure, just so.)
It may be possible to speak of all the jewels of Meru and the ocean, or even to count the stones and the drops of water; but here, it is not possible to measure or describe the qualities of the waters of the Ganga. (13-27-97)
तस्मादिमान्परया श्रद्धयोक्ता; न्गुणान्सर्वाञ्जाह्नवीजांस्तथैव। भजेद्वाचा मनसा कर्मणा च; भक्त्या युक्तः परया श्रद्दधानः ॥१३-२७-९८॥
tasmādimān parayā śraddhayoktā; n guṇān sarvāñ jāhnavījāṃs tathaiva। bhajed vācā manasā karmaṇā ca; bhaktyā yuktaḥ parayā śraddadhānaḥ ॥13-27-98॥
[तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; इमान् (imān) - these; परया (parayā) - by supreme; श्रद्धया (śraddhayā) - by faith; उक्ता (uktā) - declared; गुणान् (guṇān) - qualities; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; जाह्नवी-जाम् (jāhnavī-jām) - born of the Ganges; तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; भजेत् (bhajet) - should worship; वाचा (vācā) - by speech; मनसा (manasā) - by mind; कर्मणा (karmaṇā) - by action; च (ca) - and; भक्त्या (bhaktyā) - by devotion; युक्तः (yuktaḥ) - engaged; परया (parayā) - by supreme; श्रद्दधानः (śraddadhānaḥ) - with faith;]
(Therefore, these, by supreme faith declared, all qualities born of the Ganges likewise; should worship by speech, by mind, by action and; by devotion engaged, by supreme, with faith.)
Therefore, with supreme faith, one should worship all these qualities born of the Ganges, as declared, by speech, mind, and action, and with devotion, being engaged with supreme faith. (13-27-98)
लोकानिमांस्त्रीन्यशसा वितत्य; सिद्धिं प्राप्य महतीं तां दुरापाम्। गङ्गाकृतानचिरेणैव लोका; न्यथेष्टमिष्टान्विचरिष्यसि त्वम् ॥१३-२७-९९॥
lokān imāṁs trīn yaśasā vitatya; siddhiṁ prāpya mahatīṁ tāṁ durāpām. gaṅgā-kṛtān acireṇaiva lokān yatheṣṭam iṣṭān vicariṣyasi tvam ॥13-27-99॥
[लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; इमाम् (imām) - these; त्रीन् (trīn) - three; यशसा (yaśasā) - by fame; वितत्य (vitatya) - having spread; सिद्धिम् (siddhim) - accomplishment; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having attained; महतीम् (mahatīm) - great; ताम् (tām) - that; दुरापाम् (durāpām) - difficult to attain; गङ्गा-कृतान् (gaṅgā-kṛtān) - made by Gaṅgā; अचिरेण (acireṇa) - soon; एव (eva) - indeed; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; यथेष्टम् (yatheṣṭam) - as desired; इष्टान् (iṣṭān) - desired; विचरिष्यसि (vicariṣyasi) - you will move about; त्वम् (tvam) - you;]
(Worlds these three by fame having spread; accomplishment having attained great that difficult to attain; Gaṅgā-made soon indeed worlds as desired desired you will move about you.)
Having spread your fame through these three worlds, and having attained that great accomplishment which is difficult to achieve, you will soon move about in the worlds created by Gaṅgā as you desire. (13-27-99)
तव मम च गुणैर्महानुभावा; जुषतु मतिं सततं स्वधर्मयुक्तैः। अभिगतजनवत्सला हि गङ्गा; भजति युनक्ति सुखैश्च भक्तिमन्तम् ॥१३-२७-१००॥
tava mama ca guṇairmahānubhāvā; juṣatu matiṁ satataṁ svadharmayuktaiḥ. abhigatajanavatsalā hi gaṅgā; bhajati yunakti sukhaiśca bhaktimantam ॥13-27-100॥
[तव (tava) - of you; मम (mama) - of me; च (ca) - and; गुणैः (guṇaiḥ) - by virtues; महानुभावा (mahānubhāvā) - O great-souled ones; जुषतु (juṣatu) - may (she) accept; मतिं (matiṁ) - mind; सततं (satataṁ) - always; स्वधर्मयुक्तैः (svadharmayuktaiḥ) - with those endowed with their own duty; अभिगतजनवत्सला (abhigatajanavatsalā) - affectionate to those who have approached; हि (hi) - indeed; गङ्गा (gaṅgā) - Gaṅgā; भजति (bhajati) - favors; युनक्ति (yunakti) - unites; सुखैः (sukhaiḥ) - with happiness; च (ca) - and; भक्तिमन्तम् (bhaktimantam) - the devoted one;]
(O great-souled ones, by the virtues of you and me, may (she) always accept the mind endowed with its own duty. Indeed, Gaṅgā, affectionate to those who have approached, favors and unites the devoted one with happiness.)
O great-souled ones, by the virtues of both you and me, may she always accept the mind that is steadfast in its own duty. Indeed, Gaṅgā, who is affectionate to those who approach her, favors and unites the devoted with happiness. (13-27-100)

iti paramamatir guṇān anekān; ñśilarataye tripathānuyogarūpān. bahuvidham anuśāsya tathyarūpā; nggatanatalaṃ dyutimān viveśa siddhaḥ ॥13-27-101॥
[इति (iti) - thus; परममति: (paramamatiḥ) - supreme intellect; गुणान् (guṇān) - qualities; अनेकान् (anekān) - many; शिलरतये (śilarataye) - for the jewel of steadfastness; त्रिपथ (tripatha) - three paths; अनुयोगरूपान् (anuyogarūpān) - having the form of application; बहुविधम् (bahuvidham) - various; अनुशास्य (anuśāsya) - having instructed; तथ्यरूपा (tathyarūpā) - of true nature; गगनतलम् (gaganatalam) - the expanse of the sky; द्युतिमान् (dyutimān) - radiant; विवेश (viveśa) - entered; सिद्धः (siddhaḥ) - the perfected one;]
(Thus, the supreme intellect, having instructed the many qualities for the jewel of steadfastness, having the form of application to the three paths, of true nature, having instructed various (things), the perfected one, radiant, entered the expanse of the sky.)
Thus, the perfected one of supreme intellect, after instructing the many qualities for the jewel of steadfastness, which take the form of application to the three paths and are of true nature, having given various instructions, entered the radiant expanse of the sky. (13-27-101)
शिलवृत्तिस्तु सिद्धस्य वाक्यैः सम्बोधितस्तदा। गङ्गामुपास्य विधिवत्सिद्धिं प्राप्तः सुदुर्लभाम् ॥१३-२७-१०२॥
śilavṛttis tu siddhasya vākyaiḥ sambodhitās tadā। gaṅgām upāsya vidhivat siddhiṃ prāptaḥ sudurlabhām ॥13-27-102॥
[शिलवृत्तिः (śilavṛttiḥ) - ascetic conduct; तु (tu) - but; सिद्धस्य (siddhasya) - of the perfected one; वाक्यैः (vākyaiḥ) - by the words; सम्बोधितः (sambodhitaḥ) - addressed; तदा (tadā) - then; गङ्गाम् (gaṅgām) - Ganga; उपास्य (upāsya) - having worshipped; विधिवत् (vidhivat) - according to the rule; सिद्धिं (siddhiṃ) - perfection; प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - obtained; सुदुर्लभाम् (sudurlabhām) - very difficult to obtain;]
(But ascetic conduct, of the perfected one, by the words, addressed, then; Ganga, having worshipped, according to the rule, perfection, obtained, very difficult to obtain.)
But, when addressed by the words of the perfected one, he then, having worshipped Ganga according to the rule, obtained a perfection that is very difficult to attain. (13-27-102)
तस्मात्त्वमपि कौन्तेय भक्त्या परमया युतः। गङ्गामभ्येहि सततं प्राप्स्यसे सिद्धिमुत्तमाम् ॥१३-२७-१०३॥
tasmāttvamapi kaunteya bhaktyā paramayā yutaḥ। gaṅgām abhyēhi satataṃ prāpsyasē siddhim uttamām ॥13-27-103॥
[तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अपि (api) - also; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - O son of Kunti; भक्त्या (bhaktyā) - with devotion; परमया (paramayā) - supreme; युतः (yutaḥ) - endowed; गङ्गाम् (gaṅgām) - Ganga; अभ्येहि (abhyēhi) - approach; सततम् (satatam) - always; प्राप्स्यसे (prāpsyasē) - you will attain; सिद्धिम् (siddhim) - perfection; उत्तमाम् (uttamām) - highest;]
(Therefore, you also, O son of Kunti, endowed with supreme devotion, always approach Ganga; you will attain the highest perfection.)

śrutvetihāsaṃ bhīṣmoktaṃ gaṅgāyāḥ stavasamyutam। yudhiṣṭhiraḥ parāṃ prītim agacchad bhrātṛbhiḥ saha ॥13-27-104॥
[श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; इतिहासं (itihāsaṃ) - history; भीष्मोक्तं (bhīṣmoktam) - spoken by Bhīṣma; गङ्गायाः (gaṅgāyāḥ) - of Gaṅgā; स्तवसंयुतम् (stavasamyutam) - accompanied by praise; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhiṣṭhira; परां (parāṃ) - supreme; प्रीतिम् (prītim) - delight; अगच्छत् (agacchat) - attained; भ्रातृभिः (bhrātṛbhiḥ) - with brothers; सह (saha) - together;]
(Having heard the history spoken by Bhīṣma, of Gaṅgā, accompanied by praise, Yudhiṣṭhira attained supreme delight together with his brothers.)
After hearing the story about Gaṅgā, as told by Bhīṣma and accompanied by hymns of praise, Yudhiṣṭhira, along with his brothers, experienced great joy. (13-27-104)
इतिहासमिमं पुण्यं शृणुयाद्यः पठेत वा। गङ्गायाः स्तवसंयुक्तं स मुच्येत्सर्वकिल्बिषैः ॥१३-२७-१०५॥
itihāsam imaṁ puṇyaṁ śṛṇuyād yaḥ paṭhet vā। gaṅgāyāḥ stava-saṁyuktaṁ sa mucyeta sarva-kilbiṣaiḥ ॥13-27-105॥
[इतिहासम् (itihāsam) - history; इमम् (imam) - this; पुण्यम् (puṇyam) - meritorious; शृणुयात् (śṛṇuyāt) - may hear; यः (yaḥ) - who; पठेत् (paṭhet) - may recite; वा (vā) - or; गङ्गायाः (gaṅgāyāḥ) - of Gaṅgā; स्तवसंयुक्तम् (stava-saṁyuktam) - joined with praise; सः (sa) - he; मुच्येत् (mucyeta) - may be released; सर्वकिल्बिषैः (sarva-kilbiṣaiḥ) - from all sins;]
(Who may hear or may recite this meritorious history joined with the praise of Gaṅgā, he may be released from all sins.)
Whoever hears or recites this sacred history, which is joined with the praise of Gaṅgā, will be freed from all sins. (13-27-105)
