- Mīmāmsa Sūtra 01.01.01
athāto dharmajijñāsā ॥1॥
Now, therefore, the inquiry into dharma begins.

codanālakṣaṇo'rtho dharmaḥ ॥2॥
Dharma is that which is characterized by an impelling force. / Dharma is that which is characterized by (Vedic) injunctions

tasya nimittaparīṣṭiḥ ॥3॥
Its (Dharma's) cause must be investigated.

satsamprayoge puruṣasyendriyāṇāṃ buddhijanma tatpratyakṣamanimittaṃ vidyamānopalambhanatvāt ॥4॥
Direct perception arises when the senses of a person come into contact with an existent object; this cognition is direct. Because it apprehends what is present, it fails to show the cause.

śrautpattikastu śabdasya arthena sambandhaḥ। tasya jñānam upadeśaḥ avyatirekaḥ ca arthe anupalabdhe। tat pramāṇam bādarāyaṇasya anapekṣatvāt ॥5॥
But, according to Bādarāyaṇa, the connection between a word or sound and its meaning is established by śruti; knowledge of this connection arises from authentic instruction and non-separation, even when the meaning is not (directly) perceived. This alone is the means of knowledge, since it does not depend on anything else.

karmaike tatra darśanāt ॥1-1-6॥
Some hold that action alone (is of interest), based on their view there (and not the sound or word).

asthānāt ॥1-1-7॥
As it is not situated in a stable place, i.e. it does not persist.

karoti śabdāt ॥1-1-8॥
(Because) one produces the word or sound.

sattvāntare yaugapadyāt ॥1-1-9॥
Due to (production of word or sound) simultaneity, in another entity.

prakṛtivikṛtyoś ca ॥1-1-10॥
(Also, because of) its (word or sound's) original and modified forms.
- Mīmāmsa Sūtra 01.01.11
vṛddhiś ca kartṛbhūmnā'sya ॥1-1-11॥
(Also, because) the increase here is by the capacity of the agent.

samaṃ tu tatra darśanam ॥1-1-12॥
However, the perception (of the sound) there (in all stated cases) is the same.

sataḥ paramadarśanaṃ viṣayānāgamāt ॥1-1-13॥
Supreme vision arises from the existent by non-contact (non-attachment) with sense objects. / The existent (sound) is not perceived at other times, as they are not perceived by the senses.

prayogasya param ॥1-1-14॥
By its (sound's) application, the supreme (or highest) is obtained.

ādityavad yaugapadyam ॥1-1-15॥
Simultaneity (of perception of the sound by many is), like that of the sun.

varṇāntaram avikāraḥ ॥1-1-16॥
The interval between sounds does not constitute a distortion (vikāra).

nādavṛddhiparā ॥1-1-17॥
(Louder sound by many) only results in increased tone (no distortion in its meaning).

nityastu syāt darśanasya parārthatvāt ॥1-1-18॥
However, darśana, i.e. perception of the sound, may be eternal, since it exists for the benefit of another.

(As) simultaneity applies everywhere.

saṃkhyābhāvāt ॥1-1-20॥
Because of the absence of enumeration (when the same sound is uttered multiple times).

anapekṣatvāt ॥1-1-21॥
Because there is no dependence.

prakhyābhāvācca yogasya ॥1-1-22॥
And because of the absence of manifestation, there is no union.

And also from the perception of the mark.

utpattau vā'vacanāḥ syuḥ arthasyā tanni-mittatvāt ॥1-1-24॥
At the time of origination, or due to non-utterances - may be, because meaning is not the cause.

tadbhūtānāṃ kriyārthena samāmnāyaḥ arthasya tannimittatvāt ॥1-1-25॥
The collective recitation (samāmnāyaḥ) of those entities which have attained that state, i.e. sentence formed by the collection of words, is for the purpose of action, because the meaning (artha) is caused by that.

loke sanniyamāt prayoga-sannikarṣaḥ syāt ॥1-1-26॥
In the world, application-contact arises from restriction.

vedāṃścaike sannikarṣaṃ puruṣākhyāḥ ॥1-1-27॥
The Vedas and some others consider the contact as being called 'Puruṣa'.

anityadarśanācca ॥1-1-28॥
And also due to the perception of impermanence.

uktantu śabdapūrvatvam ॥1-1-29॥
However, the precedence of sound has been declared.

ākhyā pravacanāt ॥1-1-30॥
The designation arises from exposition.

parantu śrutisāmānyamātram ॥1-1-31॥
However, it is only a general statement of the Veda.

kṛte vā viniyogaḥ syāt karmaṇaḥ sambandhāt ॥1-1-32॥
Application may arise either in the accomplished action or from the connection with the action.
