  • Preface
    • Mīmāmsa Sūtra 01.01.01
      athāto dharmajijñāsā ॥1॥
Now, therefore, the inquiry into dharma begins.
    • Mīmāmsa Sūtra 01.01.02
      codanālakṣaṇo'rtho dharmaḥ ॥2॥
Dharma is that which is characterized by an impelling force.
    • Mīmāmsa Sūtra 01.01.03
      tasya nimittaparīṣṭiḥ ॥3॥
      His examination of omens.
    • Mīmāmsa Sūtra 01.01.04
satsamprayoge puruṣasyendriyāṇāṃ buddhijanma tatpratyakṣamanimittaṃ vidyamānopalambhanatvāt ॥4॥
Direct perception arises when the senses of a person come into contact with an existent object; this cognition is direct, not caused by anything else, because it apprehends what is present.
    • Mīmāmsa Sūtra 01.01.05
śrautpattikastu śabdasya arthena sambandhaḥ। tasya jñānam upadeśaḥ avyatirekaḥ ca arthe anupalabdhe। tat pramāṇam bādarāyaṇasya anapekṣatvāt ॥5॥
But, according to Bādarāyaṇa, the connection between a word and its meaning is established by śruti; knowledge of this connection arises from instruction, non-separation, and when the meaning is not otherwise perceived. This alone is the means of knowledge, since it does not depend on anything else.
