nahuṣas tu tataḥ śrutvā cyavanaṃ taṃ tathāgatam। tvaritaḥ prayayau tatra sahāmātyapurohitaḥ ॥13-51-1॥

karavāṇi priyaṃ kiṃ te tan me vyākhyātum arhasi। sarvaṃ kartāsmi bhagavan yady api syāt suduṣkaram ॥13-51-4॥
[करवाणि (karavāṇi) - I will do; प्रियं (priyaṃ) - dear; किं (kiṃ) - what; ते (te) - for you; तत् (tat) - that; मे (me) - to me; व्याख्यातुम् (vyākhyātum) - to explain; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought; सर्वं (sarvaṃ) - everything; कर्तास्मि (kartāsmi) - I am to do; भगवन् (bhagavan) - O Lord; यद्यपि (yady api) - even if; स्यात् (syāt) - it may be; सुदुष्करम् (suduṣkaram) - very difficult;]
(I will do dear what for you. That to me to explain you ought. Everything I am to do, O Lord, even if it may be very difficult.)
I will do whatever is dear to you. Therefore, you should explain that to me. O Lord, I am ready to do everything, even if it may be very difficult. (13-51-4)

The fishermen, engaged through great effort in their livelihood of fish, give my payment to these along with the proceeds from selling the fish. (13-51-5)

[न (na) - not; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; शतसहस्रेण (śatasahasreṇa) - by a hundred thousand; (instrumental) निमेयः (nimeyaḥ) - can be estimated; can be valued; पार्थिवर्षभ (pārthivarṣabha) - O bull among kings; O best of rulers; दीयतां (dīyatāṃ) - let it be given; सदृशं (sadṛśam) - equivalent; appropriate; मूल्यम् (mūlyam) - price; value; अमात्यैः (amātyaiḥ) - with ministers; (instrumental plural) सह (saha) - with; चिन्तय (cintaya) - consider; reflect;]
(Not I by a hundred thousand can be valued, O bull among kings. Let an equivalent price be given, with ministers, consider.)
O best of kings! I cannot be valued even at a hundred thousand. Let an appropriate price be decided—consider it together with your ministers. (13-51-9)

(A crore let be given as the price to the Niṣādas, O priest. Which this even is not enough, therefore more let it be given.)
O priest, let a crore be given as price to the Niṣādas. Since even this is not sufficient, let more be given. (13-51-10)

O king, I do not deserve either half or the entire kingdom. Let an appropriate price be determined and given, after consideration together with the sages. (13-51-13)

maharṣer vacanaṃ śrutvā nahuṣo duḥkha-karśitaḥ। sa cintayām āsa tadā saha amātya-purohitaḥ॥13-51-14॥

(Having heard the speech of the great sage, Nahuṣa afflicted by pain, then began to think with his ministers and priests.)
After hearing the words of the great sage, Nahuṣa, troubled by suffering, began to deliberate together with his ministers and priests. (13-51-14)
तत्र त्वन्यो वनचरः कश्चिन्मूलफलाशनः। नहुषस्य समीपस्थो गविजातोऽभवन्मुनिः ॥१३-५१-१५॥
tatra tvan-yo vanacaraḥ kaścin mūlaphalāśanaḥ। nahuṣasya samīpastho gavijāto'bhavan muniḥ॥13-51-15॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; तु (tu) - but; अन्यः (anyaḥ) - another; वनचरः (vanacaraḥ) - forest-dweller; कश्चित् (kaścit) - someone; मूलफलाशनः (mūlaphalāśanaḥ) - root-and-fruit-eater; नहुषस्य (nahuṣasya) - of Nahuṣa; समीपस्थः (samīpasthaḥ) - situated nearby; गविजातः (gavijātaḥ) - born among cows; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; मुनिः (muniḥ) - sage;]
(There but another forest-dweller someone root-and-fruit-eater of Nahuṣa situated nearby born among cows became sage.)
But there, another forest-dweller who ate roots and fruits, a sage born among cows, became one who was near Nahuṣa. (13-51-15)
स समाभाष्य राजानमब्रवीद्द्विजसत्तमः। तोषयिष्याम्यहं विप्रं यथा तुष्टो भविष्यति ॥१३-५१-१६॥
sa samābhāṣya rājānam abravīd dvijasattamaḥ। toṣayiṣyāmy ahaṃ vipraṃ yathā tuṣṭo bhaviṣyati॥13-51-16॥
[स (sa) - he; समाभाष्य (samābhāṣya) - after addressing; राजानम् (rājānam) - the king; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - (he) spoke; द्विजसत्तमः (dvijasattamaḥ) - the best of twice-born (brāhmaṇa); तोषयिष्यामि (toṣayiṣyāmi) - I will gratify; अहम् (aham) - I; विप्रम् (vipram) - the brāhmaṇa; यथा (yathā) - so that; तुष्टः (tuṣṭaḥ) - satisfied; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - he will be;]

(Not I false speech would speak among my own even, how much less otherwise (with others). Your which I would speak, that is to be acted upon without doubt.)
I would not speak false words even among my own, how much less with others. Whatever I say to you should be acted upon without doubt. (13-51-17)

(Let the Lord tell the value suitable for the great sage Bhṛgu. Protect me from this, and (protect) my possessions and my family.)
O Lord, please state the value appropriate for the great sage Bhṛgu. Save me from this situation, and also safeguard my wealth and family. (13-51-18)
हन्याद्धि भगवान्क्रुद्धस्त्रैलोक्यमपि केवलम्। किं पुनर्मां तपोहीनं बाहुवीर्यपरायणम् ॥१३-५१-१९॥
hanyād dhi bhagavān kruddhas trailokyam api kevalam। kiṁ punar māṁ tapo-hīnaṁ bāhu-vīrya-parāyaṇam॥13-51-19॥
[हन्यात् (hanyāt) - may slay; हि (hi) - indeed; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the Lord; क्रुद्धः (kruddhaḥ) - angry; त्रैलोक्यम् (trailokyam) - the three worlds; अपि (api) - even; केवलम् (kevalam) - entirely; किं (kiṁ) - what; पुनः (punar) - then; माम् (mām) - me; तपः-हीनम् (tapo-hīnam) - devoid of austerity; बाहु-वीर्य-परायणम् (bāhu-vīrya-parāyaṇam) - relying on the strength of arms;]
(May the Lord, indeed angry, slay the three worlds even entirely; what then me, devoid of austerity, relying on the strength of arms?)
If the Lord, being angry, can indeed destroy even the whole three worlds, then how much more easily could He destroy me, who am devoid of austerity and rely only on my own physical strength? (13-51-19)
अगाधेऽम्भसि मग्नस्य सामात्यस्य सहर्त्विजः। प्लवो भव महर्षे त्वं कुरु मूल्यविनिश्चयम् ॥१३-५१-२०॥

अनर्घेया महाराज द्विजा वर्णमहत्तमाः। गावश्च पृथिवीपाल गौर्मूल्यं परिकल्प्यताम् ॥१३-५१-२२॥

अभिगम्य भृगोः पुत्रं च्यवनं संशितव्रतम्। इदं प्रोवाच नृपते वाचा सन्तर्पयन्निव ॥१३-५१-२४॥

उत्तिष्ठोत्तिष्ठ विप्रर्षे गवा क्रीतोऽसि भार्गव। एतन्मूल्यमहं मन्ये तव धर्मभृतां वर ॥१३-५१-२५॥

(Arise, arise, O sage among Brāhmaṇas, O Bhārgava, you are purchased by a cow. This price I consider (to be) yours, O best of the upholders of dharma.)
Arise, arise, O sage among Brāhmaṇas! O Bhārgava, you have been bought with a cow. I consider this price as yours, O best of those upholding dharma. (13-51-25)

(I arise, this, O king, properly bought I am by you, O sinless one. With cows, equal, not I see wealth any here, O Acyuta.)

कीर्तनं श्रवणं दानं दर्शनं चापि पार्थिव। गवां प्रशस्यते वीर सर्वपापहरं शिवम् ॥१३-५१-२७॥
kīrtanaṁ śravaṇaṁ dānaṁ darśanaṁ cāpi pārthiva। gavāṁ praśasyate vīra sarvapāpaharaṁ śivam ॥13-51-27॥

गावो लक्ष्म्याः सदा मूलं गोषु पाप्मा न विद्यते। अन्नमेव सदा गावो देवानां परमं हविः ॥१३-५१-२८॥
gāvo lakṣmyāḥ sadā mūlaṃ goṣu pāpmā na vidyate। annam-eva sadā gāvo devānāṃ paramaṃ haviḥ॥13-51-28॥

स्वाहाकारवषट्कारौ गोषु नित्यं प्रतिष्ठितौ। गावो यज्ञप्रणेत्र्यो वै तथा यज्ञस्य ता मुखम् ॥१३-५१-२९॥
svāhākāra-vaṣaṭkārau goṣu nityaṃ pratiṣṭhitau। gāvo yajñapraṇetryo vai tathā yajñasya tā mukham॥13-51-29॥

(The exclamations svāhā and vaṣaṭ are constantly established in cows; cows are indeed carriers of sacrifice, so they are the mouth of the sacrifice.)
The exclamations 'svāhā' and 'vaṣaṭ' are always established in cows. Cows are truly the conductors of sacrifice and thus they are the mouth of the sacrifice. (13-51-29)
अमृतं ह्यक्षयं दिव्यं क्षरन्ति च वहन्ति च। अमृतायतनं चैताः सर्वलोकनमस्कृताः ॥१३-५१-३०॥
amṛtaṁ hy akṣayaṁ divyaṁ kṣaranti ca vahanti ca। amṛtāyatanaṁ caitāḥ sarvalokanamaskṛtāḥ॥13-51-30॥
[अमृतम् (amṛtam) - nectar; immortality; हि (hi) - indeed; अक्षयम् (akṣayam) - imperishable; दिव्यम् (divyam) - divine; क्षरन्ति (kṣaranti) - they flow; च (ca) - and; वहन्ति (vahanti) - they carry; च (ca) - and; अमृतायतनम् (amṛtāyatanam) - abode of nectar; च (ca) - and; एताः (etāḥ) - these; सर्वलोकनमस्कृताः (sarvalokanamaskṛtāḥ) - revered by all worlds;]
(Nectar indeed, imperishable, divine, they flow and they carry. The abode of nectar and these are revered by all worlds.)

तेजसा वपुषा चैव गावो वह्निसमा भुवि। गावो हि सुमहत्तेजः प्राणिनां च सुखप्रदाः ॥१३-५१-३१॥
tejasā vapuṣā caiva gāvo vahnisamā bhuvi। gāvo hi sumahattejaḥ prāṇināṃ ca sukhapradāḥ॥13-51-31॥
[तेजसा (tejasā) - by brilliance; वपुषा (vapuṣā) - by form; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; गावः (gāvaḥ) - cows; वह्निसमा (vahnisamā) - equal to fire; भुवि (bhuvi) - on earth; गावः (gāvaḥ) - cows; हि (hi) - indeed; सुमहत्तेजः (sumahattejaḥ) - of very great splendor; प्राणिनाम् (prāṇinām) - of living beings; च (ca) - and; सुखप्रदाः (sukhapradāḥ) - givers of happiness;]
(By brilliance, by form, and indeed, cows are equal to fire on earth. Cows indeed of very great splendor are givers of happiness to living beings.)

निविष्टं गोकुलं यत्र श्वासं मुञ्चति निर्भयम्। विराजयति तं देशं पाप्मानं चापकर्षति ॥१३-५१-३२॥
niviṣṭaṁ gokulaṁ yatra śvāsaṁ muñcati nirbhayam। virājayati taṁ deśaṁ pāpmānaṁ cāpakarṣati ॥13-51-32॥
[निविष्टं (niviṣṭam) - settled; established; गोकुलं (gokulam) - Gokula (the settlement of cowherds); यत्र (yatra) - where; श्वासं (śvāsaṁ) - breath; मुञ्चति (muñcati) - releases; lets go; निर्भयम् (nirbhayam) - fearlessly; विराजयति (virājayati) - makes radiant; adorns; तं (tam) - that; देशं (deśam) - land; region; पाप्मानं (pāpmānam) - sin; evil; च (ca) - and; अपकर्षति (apakarṣati) - draws away; removes;]
(Settled Gokula where breath fearlessly releases; makes radiant that land and sin removes.)
Wherever Gokula is established and one breathes fearlessly, that land becomes radiant and all sin is removed. (13-51-32)
गावः स्वर्गस्य सोपानं गावः स्वर्गेऽपि पूजिताः। गावः कामदुघा देव्यो नान्यत्किञ्चित्परं स्मृतम् ॥१३-५१-३३॥
gāvaḥ svargasya sopānaṃ gāvaḥ svarge'pi pūjitāḥ। gāvaḥ kāmadughā devyo nānyatkiñcitparaṃ smṛtam ॥13-51-33॥
[गावः (gāvaḥ) - cows; स्वर्गस्य (svargasya) - of heaven; सोपानं (sopānam) - stairway; गावः (gāvaḥ) - cows; स्वर्गेऽपि (svarge'pi) - even in heaven; पूजिताः (pūjitāḥ) - worshipped; गावः (gāvaḥ) - cows; कामदुघाः (kāmadughāḥ) - wish-yielding; देव्यः (devyaḥ) - goddesses; न (na) - not; अन्यत् (anyat) - other; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; परं (param) - higher; स्मृतम् (smṛtam) - is remembered;]

(Thus this greatness among cows, O bull among kings, has been spoken by me. Mentioning only a single portion of its merit is possible; but a complete recitation is not.)

darśanaṃ kathanaṃ caiva sahāsmābhiḥ kṛtaṃ mune. satāṃ saptapadaṃ mitraṃ prasādaṃ naḥ kuru prabho ॥13-51-35॥
[दर्शनम् (darśanam) - seeing; कथनम् (kathanam) - speaking; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; सहा (sahā) - together with; अस्माभिः (asmābhiḥ) - by us; कृतम् (kṛtam) - done; मुने (mune) - O sage; सताम् (satām) - of the good; सप्तपदम् (saptapadam) - seven steps; मित्रम् (mitram) - friend; प्रसादम् (prasādam) - favor; नः (naḥ) - for us; कुरु (kuru) - grant; प्रभो (prabho) - O lord;]
(Seeing, speaking and indeed, together with by us, done, O sage; of the good, seven steps, friend, favor for us grant, O lord.)
O sage, seeing and speaking together with us has been done; O lord, grant us the favor of friendship of the good for (at least) seven steps. (13-51-35)
हवींषि सर्वाणि यथा ह्युपभुङ्क्ते हुताशनः। एवं त्वमपि धर्मात्मन्पुरुषाग्निः प्रतापवान् ॥१३-५१-३६॥
havīṁṣi sarvāṇi yathā hy upabhuṅkte hutāśanaḥ। evaṁ tvam api dharmātman puruṣāgniḥ pratāpavān ॥13-51-36॥
[हवींषि (havīṁṣi) - oblations; सर्वाणि (sarvāṇi) - all; यथा (yathā) - just as; हि (hi) - indeed; उपभुङ्क्ते (upabhuṅkte) - enjoys; हुताशनः (hutāśanaḥ) - fire; एवं (evaṁ) - so; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अपि (api) - also; धर्मात्मन् (dharmātman) - one of righteous soul; पुरुषाग्निः (puruṣāgniḥ) - person-fire; प्रतापवान् (pratāpavān) - full of energy;]
(Just as indeed fire enjoys all oblations, so you also, O righteous-souled, person-fire, full of energy.)
Just as fire consumes all offerings, so too, O righteous one with the fire-like energy of a man, you also (consume all things by your energy). (13-51-36)
प्रसादयामहे विद्वन्भवन्तं प्रणता वयम्। अनुग्रहार्थमस्माकमियं गौः प्रतिगृह्यताम् ॥१३-५१-३७॥
prasādayāmahe vidvan bhavantaṃ praṇatā vayam। anugrahārtham asmākam iyaṃ gauḥ pratigṛhyatām॥13-51-37॥

(We entreat you, O learned one, ourselves bowed; for the sake of favor, this cow of ours may be received.)
We, who are bowed, entreat you, O learned one; for granting favor, may you accept this cow of ours. (13-51-37)

[कृपणस्य (kṛpaṇasya) - of a miser; च (ca) - and; यत् (yat) - which; चक्षुः (cakṣuḥ) - eye; मुनेः (muner) - of a sage; आशीविषस्य (āśīviṣasya) - of a venomous serpent; च (ca) - and; नरं (naraṁ) - a man; समूलं (samūlaṁ) - together with the root; दहति (dahati) - burns; कक्षम् (kakṣam) - grass; अग्निः (agniḥ) - fire; इव (iva) - like; ज्वलन् (jvalan) - blazing;]
(And the eye of a miser, and which (the eye) of a sage, and of a venomous serpent, burns a man together with root, like blazing fire (burns) grass.)
Just as a blazing fire burns grass from the roots, so the gaze of a miser, a sage, or a venomous serpent can consume a man completely. (13-51-38)
प्रतिगृह्णामि वो धेनुं कैवर्ता मुक्तकिल्बिषाः। दिवं गच्छत वै क्षिप्रं मत्स्यैर्जालोद्धृतैः सह ॥१३-५१-३९॥
pratigṛhṇāmi vo dhenuṃ kaivartā muktakilbiṣāḥ। divaṃ gacchata vai kṣipraṃ matsyair jāloddhṛtaiḥ saha ॥13-51-39॥

(I accept your cow, O fishermen freed from sin; go to heaven indeed quickly, together with the fishes caught by the net.)

ततस्तस्य प्रसादात्ते महर्षेर्भावितात्मनः। निषादास्तेन वाक्येन सह मत्स्यैर्दिवं ययुः ॥१३-५१-४०॥
tatas tasya prasādāt te maharṣeḥ bhāvitātmanaḥ| niṣādās tena vākyena saha matsyaiḥ divaṃ yayuḥ ॥13-51-40॥

(Then, by his favor, they—the Niṣādas, by the utterance of the great sage whose self was purified—together with the fishes, went to heaven.)
Then, by the grace of the great sage, the Niṣādas, by that utterance, together with the fishes, ascended to heaven. (13-51-40)
ततः स राजा नहुषो विस्मितः प्रेक्ष्य धीवरान्। आरोहमाणांस्त्रिदिवं मत्स्यांश्च भरतर्षभ ॥१३-५१-४१॥

(Then he, king Nahuṣa, astonished, having seen fishermen ascending to heaven and fishes, O best of Bharatas.)

(Then the king of great strength, Nahuṣa, lord of the earth, supreme, thus said, pleased, then, best of the Bharatas.)
Then, O best of the Bharatas, the king Nahuṣa, endowed with great strength and lord of the earth, being pleased, spoke these supreme words. (13-51-43)
ततो जग्राह धर्मे स स्थितिमिन्द्रनिभो नृपः। तथेति चोदितः प्रीतस्तावृषी प्रत्यपूजयत् ॥१३-५१-४४॥
tato jagrāha dharme sa sthitim indranibho nṛpaḥ। tatheti coditaḥ prītas tau ṛṣī pratyapūjayat ॥13-51-44॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; जग्राह (jagrāha) - he accepted; धर्मे (dharme) - in righteousness; सः (sa) - he; स्थितिम् (sthitim) - state; इन्द्रनिभः (indranibhaḥ) - Indra-like; नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - king; तथा (tathā) - so; इति (iti) - thus; चोदितः (coditaḥ) - being prompted; प्रीतः (prītaḥ) - pleased; तौ (tau) - those two; ऋषी (ṛṣī) - sages; प्रत्यपूजयत् (pratyapūjayat) - he worshipped in return;]
(Then he, the Indra-like king, accepted the state in righteousness. Thus addressed, pleased, he worshipped those two sages in return.)
Then the king, resembling Indra, accepted his position in righteousness. Being thus addressed and pleased, he duly paid respect to those two sages. (13-51-44)
समाप्तदीक्षश्च्यवनस्ततोऽगच्छत्स्वमाश्रमम्। गविजश्च महातेजाः स्वमाश्रमपदं ययौ ॥१३-५१-४५॥
samāptadīkṣaś cyavanaḥ tato 'gacchat svam āśramam। gavijaś ca mahātejāḥ svam āśramapadaṃ yayau ॥13-51-45॥
[समाप्तदीक्षः (samāptadīkṣaḥ) - whose consecration was completed; च्यवनः (cyavanaḥ) - Cyavana; ततः (tataḥ) - then; अगच्छत् (agacchat) - went; स्वम् (svam) - his own; आश्रमम् (āśramam) - hermitage; गविजः (gavijaḥ) - the sage born from a cow (Ṛcīka or Jamadagni); च (ca) - and; महातेजाः (mahātejāḥ) - of great energy; स्वम् (svam) - his own; आश्रमपदं (āśramapadam) - the abode of the hermitage; ययौ (yayau) - went;]
(Whose consecration was completed Cyavana then went his own hermitage; the sage born from a cow and of great energy his own hermitage-abode went.)
Cyavana, whose consecration was completed, then went to his own hermitage; and the great sage Gavija, of great energy, went to his own hermitage abode. (13-51-45)
निषादाश्च दिवं जग्मुस्ते च मत्स्या जनाधिप। नहुषोऽपि वरं लब्ध्वा प्रविवेश पुरं स्वकम् ॥१३-५१-४६॥
niṣādāś ca divaṃ jagmus te ca matsyā janādhipa | nahuṣo'pi varaṃ labdhvā praviveśa puraṃ svakam ॥13-51-46॥
[निषादाः (niṣādāḥ) - The Niṣādas; च (ca) - and; दिवम् (divam) - heaven; जग्मुः (jagmuḥ) - went; ते (te) - those; च (ca) - and; मत्स्याः (matsyāḥ) - the Matsyas; जनाधिप (janādhipa) - O king; नहुषः (nahuṣaḥ) - Nahuṣa; अपि (api) - also; वरम् (varam) - boon; लब्ध्वा (labdhvā) - having obtained; प्रविवेश (praviveśa) - entered; पुरम् (puram) - city; स्वकम् (svakam) - his own;]
(The Niṣādas and those Matsyas, O king, went to heaven; Nahuṣa also, having obtained the boon, entered his own city.)

एतत्ते कथितं तात यन्मां त्वं परिपृच्छसि। दर्शने यादृशः स्नेहः संवासे च युधिष्ठिर ॥१३-५१-४७॥
etat te kathitaṁ tāta yan māṁ tvaṁ paripṛcchasi. darśane yādṛśaḥ snehaḥ saṁvāse ca yudhiṣṭhira ॥13-51-47॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; ते (te) - to you; कथितम् (kathitam) - has been told; तात (tāta) - O dear one; यत् (yat) - which; माम् (mām) - me; त्वम् (tvam) - you; परिपृच्छसि (paripṛcchasi) - (you) ask; दर्शने (darśane) - in seeing; यादृशः (yādṛśaḥ) - such as; स्नेहः (snehaḥ) - affection; संवासे (saṁvāse) - in dwelling together; च (ca) - and; युधिष्ठिर (yudhiṣṭhira) - Yudhiṣṭhira;]
(This to you has been told, O dear one, which me you ask; in seeing such affection and in dwelling together, O Yudhiṣṭhira.)
O Yudhiṣṭhira, I have told you what you asked me, O dear one, regarding the kind of affection present in seeing and in living together. (13-51-47)
महाभाग्यं गवां चैव तथा धर्मविनिश्चयम्। किं भूयः कथ्यतां वीर किं ते हृदि विवक्षितम् ॥१३-५१-४८॥
mahābhāgyaṃ gavāṃ caiva tathā dharmaviniścayam। kiṃ bhūyaḥ kathyatāṃ vīra kiṃ te hṛdi vivakṣitam ॥13-51-48॥
