saṃśayo me mahāprājña sumahān sāgaropamaḥ। tan me śṛṇu mahābāho śrutvā ca ākhyātum arhasi ॥13-52-1॥

O greatly wise one, my doubt is very great, like the ocean. Therefore, hear it from me, O mighty-armed one, and after hearing it, you are worthy to explain (it to me). (13-52-1)
कौतूहलं मे सुमहज्जामदग्न्यं प्रति प्रभो। रामं धर्मभृतां श्रेष्ठं तन्मे व्याख्यातुमर्हसि ॥१३-५२-२॥

O lord, I have a very great curiosity regarding Jāmadagnya (Paraśurāma). Please explain that to me with respect to Rāma, the foremost among the upholders of dharma. (13-52-2)
कथमेष समुत्पन्नो रामः सत्यपराक्रमः। कथं ब्रह्मर्षिवंशे च क्षत्रधर्मा व्यजायत ॥१३-५२-३॥
katham eṣa samutpanno rāmaḥ satyaparākramaḥ। kathaṁ brahmarṣivaṁśe ca kṣatradharmā vyajāyata ॥13-52-3॥

How was this Rama, who is truly valorous, born? How was one of kṣatriya nature born in the lineage of Brahmarṣis? (13-52-3)
तदस्य सम्भवं राजन्निखिलेनानुकीर्तय। कौशिकाच्च कथं वंशात्क्षत्राद्वै ब्राह्मणोऽभवत् ॥१३-५२-४॥
tadasya sambhavaṃ rājan nikhilenānukīrtaya। kauśikācca kathaṃ vaṃśāt kṣatrād vai brāhmaṇo'bhavat॥13-52-4॥

(That, of him, origin, O king, entirely recount. From Kuśika and, how, from the lineage, from kṣatriya, indeed, a brāhmaṇa became.)
O king, narrate entirely the origin of him. And how did a brāhmaṇa indeed arise from the kṣatriya lineage of Kuśika? (13-52-4)
अहो प्रभावः सुमहानासीद्वै सुमहात्मनोः। रामस्य च नरव्याघ्र विश्वामित्रस्य चैव ह ॥१३-५२-५॥
aho prabhāvaḥ sumahān āsīd vai sumahātmanoḥ. rāmasya ca naravyāghra viśvāmitrasya caiva ha ॥13-52-5॥
[अहो (aho) - Oh; प्रभावः (prabhāvaḥ) - power; सुमहान् (sumahān) - very great; आसीद् (āsīd) - was; वै (vai) - indeed; सुमहात्मनोः (sumahātmanoḥ) - of the two exceedingly great-souled; रामस्य (rāmasya) - of Rāma; च (ca) - and; नरव्याघ्र (naravyāghra) - tiger among men; विश्वामित्रस्य (viśvāmitrasya) - of Viśvāmitra; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; ह (ha) - certainly;]
(Oh, the power very great was indeed of the two exceedingly great-souled, of Rāma and and certainly Viśvāmitra, the tiger among men.)
Oh, indeed how great was the power of those two exalted souls—Rāma and Viśvāmitra, the tiger among men. (13-52-5)
कथं पुत्रानतिक्रम्य तेषां नप्तृष्वथाभवत्। एष दोषः सुतान्हित्वा तन्मे व्याख्यातुमर्हसि ॥१३-५२-६॥
kathaṁ putrānatikramya teṣāṁ naptriṣvathābhavat। eṣa doṣaḥ sutānhitvā tanme vyākhyātumarhasi॥13-52-6॥

एतं दोषं पुरा दृष्ट्वा भार्गवश्च्यवनस्तदा। आगामिनं महाबुद्धिः स्ववंशे मुनिपुङ्गवः ॥१३-५२-८॥
etaṁ doṣaṁ purā dṛṣṭvā bhārgavaś cyavanaḥ tadā. āgāminaṁ mahābuddhiḥ svavaṁśe munipuṅgavaḥ ॥13-52-8॥

Having previously seen this fault, Cyavana, the descendant of Bhr̥gu and the foremost among sages, who was very wise, foresaw it would occur in his own lineage. (13-52-8)
सञ्चिन्त्य मनसा सर्वं गुणदोषबलाबलम्। दग्धुकामः कुलं सर्वं कुशिकानां तपोधनः ॥१३-५२-९॥
sañcintya manasā sarvaṃ guṇa-doṣa-bala-abalam। dagdhukāmaḥ kulaṃ sarvaṃ kuśikānāṃ tapodhanaḥ ॥13-52-9॥
[सञ्चिन्त्य (sañcintya) - having carefully considered; मनसा (manasā) - with the mind; सर्वं (sarvaṃ) - all; गुणदोषबलाबलम् (guṇa-doṣa-bala-abalam) - virtue-fault-strength-weakness; दग्धुकामः (dagdhukāmaḥ) - desiring to burn; कुलं (kulaṃ) - the family; सर्वं (sarvaṃ) - all; कुशिकानां (kuśikānāṃ) - of the Kuśikas; तपोधनः (tapodhanaḥ) - the ascetic (having austerity as wealth);]
(Having carefully considered with the mind all virtue, fault, strength, and weakness, desiring to burn all the family of the Kuśikas, the ascetic.)
The ascetic, having thoroughly thought over all the virtues, faults, strengths, and weaknesses with his mind, wished to destroy the entire family of the Kuśikas. (13-52-9)
च्यवनस्तमनुप्राप्य कुशिकं वाक्यमब्रवीत्। वस्तुमिच्छा समुत्पन्ना त्वया सह ममानघ ॥१३-५२-१०॥
cyavanas tam anuprāpya kuśikaṃ vākyam abravīt। vastum icchā samutpannā tvayā saha mama anagha ॥13-52-10॥

(Cyavana, having reached him, spoke a statement to Kushika: "Desire to dwell with you has arisen for me, O sinless one." (13-52-10))
Cyavana, after reaching Kushika, spoke these words: "I have developed a desire to live with you, O sinless one." (13-52-10)

भगवन्सहधर्मोऽयं पण्डितैरिह धार्यते। प्रदानकाले कन्यानामुच्यते च सदा बुधैः ॥१३-५२-११॥
bhagavan-sahadharmo'yaṃ paṇḍitairiha dhāryate। pradānakāle kanyānāmucyate ca sadā budhaiḥ ॥13-52-11॥
[भगवन् (bhagavan) - O revered one; सहधर्मः (sahadharmaḥ) - joint duty; अयम् (ayam) - this; पण्डितैः (paṇḍitaiḥ) - by the learned ones; इह (iha) - here; धार्यते (dhāryate) - is regarded; प्रदानकाले (pradānakāle) - at the time of giving (away); कन्यानाम् (kanyānām) - of maidens; उच्यते (ucyate) - is spoken; च (ca) - and; सदा (sadā) - always; बुधैः (budhaiḥ) - by the wise;]

[यत् (yat) - that which;' तु (tu) - but;' तावत् (tāvat) - so far;' अतिक्रान्तं (atikrāntaṃ) - transgressed; gone beyond;' धर्मद्वारं (dharmadvāraṃ) - the gate of dharma; door to righteousness;' तपोधन (tapodhana) - O possessor of austerity; O ascetic;' तत् (tat) - that;' कार्यं (kāryaṃ) - action; to be done;' प्रकरिष्यामि (prakariṣyāmi) - I shall do; I will accomplish;' तत् (tad) - that;' अनुज्ञातुम् (anujñātum) - to permit; to grant permission;' अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought; you are worthy;]
(But as for that which so far has transgressed the gate of dharma, O possessor of austerity, that action I shall accomplish; you ought to permit that.)
But as for what has so far gone beyond the gate of dharma, O ascetic, I will perform that action; you ought to permit it. (13-52-12)

pragṛhya rājā bhṛṅgāraṃ pādyamasmai nyavedayat. kārayāmāsa sarvāśca kriyāstasya mahātmanaḥ ॥13-52-14॥

tataḥ sa rājā cyavanaṃ madhuparkaṃ yathāvidhi। pratyagrāhaya davyagro mahātmā niyatavrataḥ ॥13-52-15॥

Then that king, undistracted and steadfast in vows, made Cyavana accept madhuparka (the traditional offering of honey and other ingredients) according to the proper injunction. (13-52-15)
सत्कृत्य स तथा विप्रमिदं वचनमब्रवीत्। भगवन्परवन्तौ स्वो ब्रूहि किं करवावहे ॥१३-५२-१६॥
satkṛtya sa tathā vipram idaṃ vacanam abravīt। bhagavan paravantau svo brūhi kiṃ karavāvahe॥13-52-16॥

(Having honored, he thus spoke this speech to the brāhmaṇa. O venerable one, before others, say what one's own (we) shall do.)
Having shown respect, he then spoke these words to the brāhmaṇa: "O revered one, in front of others, tell us what we should do." (13-52-16)
यदि राज्यं यदि धनं यदि गाः संशितव्रत। यज्ञदानानि च तथा ब्रूहि सर्वं ददामि ते ॥१३-५२-१७॥
yadi rājyaṃ yadi dhanaṃ yadi gāḥ saṃśitavrata. yajñadānāni ca tathā brūhi sarvaṃ dadāmi te ॥13-52-17॥

(If kingdom, if wealth, if cows, O one of firm vow, and sacrificial gifts so tell, all I shall give to you.)
If it is the kingdom, or wealth, or cows, O one of firm vow, or sacrificial gifts— tell me; I shall give all to you. (13-52-17)
इदं गृहमिदं राज्यमिदं धर्मासनं च ते। राजा त्वमसि शाध्युर्वीं भृत्योऽहं परवांस्त्वयि ॥१३-५२-१८॥
idaṁ gṛham idaṁ rājyam idaṁ dharmāsanaṁ ca te। rājā tvam asi śādhi urvīṁ bhṛtyaḥ ahaṁ paravān tvayi ॥13-52-18॥

(This house, this kingdom, this seat of righteousness and (all this is) yours. King you are, govern the earth. Servant I (am), subordinate to you.)
This house, this kingdom, this seat of righteousness—all these are yours. You are the king, govern the earth. I am your servant, subordinate to you. (13-52-18)
एवमुक्ते ततो वाक्ये च्यवनो भार्गवस्तदा। कुशिकं प्रत्युवाचेदं मुदा परमया युतः ॥१३-५२-१९॥
evam-ukte tato vākye cyavano bhārgavas-tadā। kuśikaṃ pratyuvācedaṃ mudā paramayā yutaḥ॥13-52-19॥

(Thus, when the statement had been spoken, at that time Cyavana, the descendant of Bhṛgu, spoke this in response to Kushika, endowed with great joy.)
When these words were spoken, Cyavana, descendant of Bhṛgu, then joyfully spoke this to Kushika. (13-52-19)
न राज्यं कामये राजन्न धनं न च योषितः। न च गा न च ते देशान्न यज्ञाञ्श्रूयतामिदम् ॥१३-५२-२०॥
na rājyaṃ kāmaye rājan na dhanaṃ na ca yoṣitaḥ। na ca gā na ca te deśān na yajñān śrūyatām idam ॥13-52-20॥

(Not kingdom I desire, O king, not wealth and not women; not cows and not your regions, not sacrifices; let this be heard.)
O king, I do not desire a kingdom, nor wealth, nor women; nor cows, nor your regions, nor sacrifices; let this be heard. (13-52-20)
नियमं कञ्चिदारप्स्ये युवयोर्यदि रोचते। परिचर्योऽस्मि यत्ताभ्यां युवाभ्यामविशङ्कया ॥१३-५२-२१॥
niyamaṃ kañcid ārapsye yuvayor yadi rocate। paricaryo'smi yattābhyāṃ yuvābhyām aviśaṅkayā ॥13-52-21॥
[नियमम् (niyamaṃ) - rule; कञ्चित् (kañcit) - a certain; आरप्स्ये (ārapsye) - I shall propose; युवयोः (yuvayoḥ) - of you both; यदि (yadi) - if; रोचते (rocate) - is agreeable; परिचर्या (paricaryā) - service; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; यत् (yat) - which; ताभ्याम् (tābhyām) - by you two; युवाभ्याम् (yuvābhyām) - by you both; अविशङ्कया (aviśaṅkayā) - without hesitation;]
(A certain rule I shall propose, of you both, if (it) is agreeable. (I) am service which by you two, by you both, without hesitation.)
If you both agree, I shall propose a certain rule. I am to serve you both without any hesitation. (13-52-21)
एवमुक्ते तदा तेन दम्पती तौ जहर्षतुः। प्रत्यब्रूतां च तमृषिमेवमस्त्विति भारत ॥१३-५२-२२॥
evamukte tadā tena dampatī tau jaharṣatuḥ। pratyabrūtāṃ ca tam ṛṣim evam astv iti bhārata ॥13-52-22॥
[एवमुक्ते (evamukte) - when thus spoken; तदा (tadā) - then; तेन (tena) - by him; दम्पती (dampatī) - the couple (husband and wife); तौ (tau) - they two; जहर्षतुः (jaharṣatuḥ) - rejoiced; प्रत्यब्रूतां (pratyabrūtāṃ) - answered (they two said in return); च (ca) - and; तम् (tam) - to him; ऋषिम् (ṛṣim) - sage; एवम् (evam) - thus; अस्तु (astu) - let it be; इति (iti) - thus; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(When thus spoken then by him, the couple, they two rejoiced. They both answered to him, the sage, "Let it be thus," O Bhārata.)
O Bhārata, when thus addressed by him, the couple rejoiced and replied to the sage, saying, "Let it be so." (13-52-22)
अथ तं कुशिको हृष्टः प्रावेशयदनुत्तमम्। गृहोद्देशं ततस्तत्र दर्शनीयमदर्शयत् ॥१३-५२-२३॥
atha taṃ kuśiko hṛṣṭaḥ prāveśayad anuttamam। gṛhuddeśaṃ tataḥ tatra darśanīyam adarśayat ॥13-52-23॥
[अथ (atha) - then; तं (taṃ) - him; कुशिकः (kuśikaḥ) - Kuśika (proper name); हृष्टः (hṛṣṭaḥ) - glad; प्रावेशयत् (prāveśayat) - caused to enter; अनुत्तमम् (anuttamam) - the best; गृहोद्देशं (gṛhuddeśam) - place of the house; ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; तत्र (tatra) - there; दर्शनीयम् (darśanīyam) - worthy of being seen; अदर्शयत् (adarśayat) - showed;]
(Then him Kuśika, glad, caused to enter the best (place). Place of the house thereafter there worthy of being seen he showed.)
Then Kuśika, gladdened, led him into the best place and then, in the house, showed him all that was worthy to be seen. (13-52-23)
इयं शय्या भगवतो यथाकाममिहोष्यताम्। प्रयतिष्यावहे प्रीतिमाहर्तुं ते तपोधन ॥१३-५२-२४॥
iyaṃ śayyā bhagavato yathākāmam ihoṣyatām। prayatiṣyāvahe prītim āhartuṃ te tapodhana ॥13-52-24॥
[इयं (iyaṃ) - this (feminine); शय्या (śayyā) - bed; couch; भगवतः (bhagavataḥ) - of the revered one; of the lord; यथाकामम् (yathākāmam) - as desired; according to wish; इह (iha) - here; उष्यताम् (uṣyatām) - may he stay; let him dwell; प्रयतिष्यावहे (prayatiṣyāvahe) - we shall endeavor; प्रीतिम् (prītim) - delight; satisfaction; आहर्तुम् (āhartuṃ) - to bring; to produce; ते (te) - for you; तपोधन (tapodhana) - O possessor of ascetic wealth; O sage;]
(This bed of the revered one as desired here may he stay. We shall endeavor to bring satisfaction for you, O sage.)
Let this bed of the revered one be used as he wishes here. We will strive to bring you pleasure, O sage. (13-52-24)
अथ सूर्योऽतिचक्राम तेषां संवदतां तथा। अथर्षिश्चोदयामास पानमन्नं तथैव च ॥१३-५२-२५॥
atha sūryo'ticakrāma teṣāṃ saṃvadatāṃ tathā। atharṣiś codayām āsa pānam annaṃ tathaiva ca ॥13-52-25॥
[अथ (atha) - then; सूर्यः (sūryaḥ) - the Sun; अतिचक्राम (aticakrāma) - passed over; तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; संवदताम् (saṃvadatām) - as they were conversing; तथा (tathā) - thus; अथ (atha) - then; ऋषिः (ṛṣiḥ) - the sage; च (ca) - and; उदयाम् आस (udayām āsa) - caused to be brought; पानम् (pānam) - drink; अन्नम् (annam) - food; तथा एव (tatha eva) - likewise; च (ca) - and;]
(Then the Sun passed over as they were conversing thus. Then the sage caused drink and food likewise to be brought and.)
Then, as they were conversing thus, the Sun passed overhead. Then the sage had food and drink brought likewise. (13-52-25)
तमपृच्छत्ततो राजा कुशिकः प्रणतस्तदा। किमन्नजातमिष्टं ते किमुपस्थापयाम्यहम् ॥१३-५२-२६॥
tam apṛcchat tato rājā kuśikaḥ praṇataḥ tadā। kim annajātam iṣṭaṃ te kim upasthāpayāmi aham ॥13-52-26॥
[तम् (tam) - him; अपृच्छत् (apṛcchat) - asked; ततः (tataḥ) - then; राजा (rājā) - king; कुशिकः (kuśikaḥ) - Kuśika; प्रणतः (praṇataḥ) - bowed; तदा (tadā) - at that time; किम् (kim) - what; अन्नजातम् (annajātam) - food-born (kind of food); इष्टम् (iṣṭam) - desired; ते (te) - by you; किम् (kim) - what; उपस्थापयामि (upasthāpayāmi) - shall I present; अहम् (aham) - I;]
(Him asked then king Kuśika bowed at that time: "What food-born desired by you? What shall I present I?")
Then King Kuśika, bowing, asked him at that time: "What kind of food do you desire? What shall I serve you?" (13-52-26)
ततः स परया प्रीत्या प्रत्युवाच जनाधिपम्। औपपत्तिकमाहारं प्रयच्छस्वेति भारत ॥१३-५२-२७॥
tataḥ sa parayā prītyā pratyuvāca janādhipam। aupapattikam-āhāraṃ prayacchasveti bhārata ॥13-52-27॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; स (sa) - he; परया (parayā) - with supreme; प्रीत्या (prītyā) - affection; प्रत्युवाच (pratyuvāca) - replied; जनाधिपम् (janādhipam) - to the lord of men; औपपत्तिकमाहारं (aupapattikam-āhāram) - natural food; प्रयच्छ (prayaccha) - give; स्व (sva) - your; इति (iti) - thus; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(Then he with supreme affection replied to the lord of men: "Give natural food yourself," thus, O Bhārata.)

तद्वचः पूजयित्वा तु तथेत्याह स पार्थिवः। यथोपपन्नं चाहारं तस्मै प्रादाज्जनाधिपः ॥१३-५२-२८॥
tad-vacaḥ pūjayitvā tu tathety-āha sa pārthivaḥ। yathopapannaṃ ca āhāraṃ tasmai prādāj janādhipaḥ॥13-52-28॥
[तद्वचः (tad-vacaḥ) - that speech; पूजयित्वा (pūjayitvā) - having honored; तु (tu) - but; तथेत्य (tatheti) - saying 'so be it'; आह (āha) - said; स (sa) - he; पार्थिवः (pārthivaḥ) - the king; यथोपपन्नं (yathopapannam) - as was fitting; च (ca) - and; आहारं (āhāram) - food; तस्मै (tasmai) - to him; प्रादात् (prādāt) - gave; जनाधिपः (janādhipaḥ) - the lord of people;]
(That speech having honored but saying 'so be it' said he the king. As was fitting and food to him gave the lord of people.)
Having honored that speech, the king said 'so be it'; then, as was appropriate, the lord of people gave food to him. (13-52-28)
ततः स भगवान्भुक्त्वा दम्पती प्राह धर्मवित्। स्वप्तुमिच्छाम्यहं निद्रा बाधते मामिति प्रभो ॥१३-५२-२९॥
tataḥ sa bhagavān bhuktvā dampatī prāha dharmavit। svaptum icchāmi ahaṃ nidrā bādhate mām iti prabho ॥13-52-29॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; स (sa) - he; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the Lord; भुक्त्वा (bhuktvā) - having eaten; दम्पती (dampatī) - to the couple; प्राह (prāha) - spoke; धर्मवित् (dharmavit) - knower of dharma; स्वप्तुम् (svaptum) - to sleep; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I wish; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; निद्रा (nidrā) - sleep; बाधते (bādhate) - afflicts; माम् (mām) - me; इति (iti) - thus; प्रभो (prabho) - O lord;]
(Then he, the Lord, having eaten, to the couple spoke, knower of dharma: "To sleep I wish, I, sleep afflicts me," thus, O lord.)
Then the Lord, having eaten, spoke to the couple as the knower of dharma: "I wish to sleep, O lord; sleep is afflicting me." (13-52-29)
ततः शय्यागृहं प्राप्य भगवानृषिसत्तमः। संविवेश नरेन्द्रस्तु सपत्नीकः स्थितोऽभवत् ॥१३-५२-३०॥
tataḥ śayyāgṛhaṃ prāpya bhagavān ṛṣisattamaḥ। saṃviveśa narendras tu sapatnīkaḥ sthito'bhavat ॥13-52-30॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; शय्यागृहं (śayyāgṛham) - bedchamber; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having reached; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the venerable; ऋषिसत्तमः (ṛṣisattamaḥ) - best among sages; संविवेश (saṃviveśa) - lay down; नरेन्द्रः (narendraḥ) - the king; तु (tu) - but; सपत्नीकः (sapatnīkaḥ) - with wife; स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - remained; अभवत् (abhavat) - became;]
(Then, having reached the bedchamber, the venerable best among sages lay down; but the king, together with his wife, remained standing.)
Then the venerable best among sages, having reached the bedchamber, lay down; but the king, along with his wife, remained standing. (13-52-30)
न प्रबोध्योऽस्मि संसुप्त इत्युवाचाथ भार्गवः। संवाहितव्यौ पादौ मे जागर्तव्यं च वां निशि ॥१३-५२-३१॥
na prabodhy o'smi saṁsupta ity uvācātha bhārgavaḥ। saṁvāhitavyau pādau me jāgartavyaṁ ca vāṁ niśi॥13-52-31॥
[न (na) - not; प्रबोध्यः (prabodhyaḥ) - to be awakened; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; संसुप्तः (saṁsuptaḥ) - having slept; इति (iti) - thus; उवाच (uvāca) - said; अथ (atha) - then; भार्गवः (bhārgavaḥ) - the descendant of Bhṛgu; संवाहितव्यौ (saṁvāhitavyau) - to be massaged (both); पादौ (pādau) - feet (dual); मे (me) - my; जागर्तव्यम् (jāgartavyam) - to be kept awake; च (ca) - and; वाम् (vāṁ) - by you two; निशि (niśi) - at night;]
(Not to be awakened I am, having slept—thus said then the Bhārgava. To be massaged the feet (of) me, and to be kept awake by you two at night.)
Then Bhārgava said, "I am not to be awakened once I have slept; my feet are to be massaged and you two must remain awake at night." (13-52-31)
अविशङ्कश्च कुशिकस्तथेत्याह स धर्मवित्। न प्रबोधयतां तं च तौ तदा रजनीक्षये ॥१३-५२-३२॥
aviśaṅkaś ca kuśikas tathety āha sa dharmavit। na prabodhayatāṃ taṃ ca tau tadā rajanīkṣaye॥13-52-32॥
[अविशङ्कः (aviśaṅkaḥ) - without doubt; च (ca) - and; कुशिकः (kuśikaḥ) - Kuśika; तथा (tathā) - thus; इति (iti) - thus; आह (āha) - said; सः (saḥ) - he; धर्मवित् (dharmavit) - knower of dharma; न (na) - not; प्रबोधयताम् (prabodhayatām) - (they) awakened; तम् (tam) - him; च (ca) - and; तौ (tau) - those two; तदा (tadā) - then; रजनीक्षये (rajanīkṣaye) - at the destruction/end of the night;]
(Without doubt and Kuśika thus said he the knower of dharma. Not awakened him and those two then at the end of the night.)
Without any doubt, Kuśika also said thus, being a knower of dharma. Those two did not awaken him then, at the end of the night. (13-52-32)
यथादेशं महर्षेस्तु शुश्रूषापरमौ तदा। बभूवतुर्महाराज प्रयतावथ दम्पती ॥१३-५२-३३॥
yathādeśaṁ maharṣestu śuśrūṣāparamau tadā। babhūvaturmahārāja prayatāvatha dampatī ॥13-52-33॥
[यथा-देशम् (yathā-deśam) - according to command; महर्षेः (maharṣeḥ) - of the great sage; तु (tu) - but; शुश्रूषा-परमौ (śuśrūṣā-paramau) - devoted to service; तदा (tadā) - then; बभूवतुः (babhūvatuḥ) - became (dual); महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; प्रयतौ (prayatau) - self-controlled (dual); अथ (atha) - then; दम्पती (dampatī) - the husband and wife (dual);]
(According to the command of the great sage, but then devoted to service, they became, O great king, the self-controlled husband and wife.)
O great king, then the husband and wife, being self-controlled, became devoted to serving the great sage as per his command. (13-52-33)
ततः स भगवान्विप्रः समादिश्य नराधिपम्। सुष्वापैकेन पार्श्वेन दिवसानेकविंशतिम् ॥१३-५२-३४॥
tataḥ sa bhagavān vipraḥ samādiśya narādhipam। suṣvāpaikena pārśvena divasānekaviṃśatim ॥13-52-34॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; स (sa) - he; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the illustrious; विप्रः (vipraḥ) - the brāhmaṇa; समादिश्य (samādiśya) - having instructed; नराधिपम् (narādhipam) - the king; सुष्वाप (suṣvāpa) - slept; एकेन (ekena) - on one; पार्श्वेन (pārśvena) - side; दिवसानेकविंशतिम् (divasānekaviṃśatim) - twenty-one days;]
(Then he, the illustrious brāhmaṇa, having instructed the king, slept on one side for twenty-one days.)
Then that illustrious brāhmaṇa, having given instructions to the king, lay sleeping on one side for twenty-one days. (13-52-34)
स तु राजा निराहारः सभार्यः कुरुनन्दन। पर्युपासत तं हृष्टश्च्यवनाराधने रतः ॥१३-५२-३५॥
sa tu rājā nirāhāraḥ sabhāryaḥ kurunandana। paryupāsata taṃ hṛṣṭaś cyavanārādhane rataḥ ॥13-52-35॥
[स (sa) - he; तु (tu) - but; राजा (rājā) - the king; निराहारः (nirāhāraḥ) - fasting; having abstained from food; सभार्यः (sabhāryaḥ) - with (his) wife; कुरुनन्दन (kurunandana) - O delight of the Kurus; O scion of the Kuru race; पर्युपासत (paryupāsata) - attended upon; तं (taṃ) - him; हृष्टः (hṛṣṭaḥ) - with joy; rejoicing; च्यवनाराधने (cyavanārādhane) - in the worship of Cyavana; रतः (rataḥ) - engaged; dedicated;]
(He but the king fasting with (his) wife, O delight of the Kurus, attended upon him, rejoicing, engaged in the worship of Cyavana.)
But the king, together with his wife, O Kuru's delight, fasted and joyfully attended upon him, being engaged in the worship of Cyavana. (13-52-35)
भार्गवस्तु समुत्तस्थौ स्वयमेव तपोधनः। अकिञ्चिदुक्त्वा तु गृहान्निश्चक्राम महातपाः ॥१३-५२-३६॥
bhārgavas tu samut tasthau svayam eva tapodhanaḥ। akiñcid uktvā tu gṛhān niścakrāma mahātapāḥ ॥13-52-36॥
[भार्गवः (bhārgavaḥ) - the descendant of Bhṛgu; तु (tu) - but; समुत्तस्थौ (samut tasthau) - rose up; स्वयमेव (svayam eva) - by himself alone; तपोधनः (tapodhanaḥ) - ascetic; (lit: whose wealth is tapas); अकिञ्चिदुक्त्वा (akiñcid uktvā) - not saying anything; तु (tu) - but; गृहात् (gṛhāt) - from the house; निश्चक्राम (niścakrāma) - went out; महातपाः (mahātapāḥ) - great ascetic;]
(But Bhārgava, the ascetic, rose up by himself alone; not saying anything, but the great ascetic went out from the house.)
But Bhārgava, the ascetic, rose up by himself and, without saying anything, the great ascetic went out from the house. (13-52-36)
तमन्वगच्छतां तौ तु क्षुधितौ श्रमकर्शितौ। भार्यापती मुनिश्रेष्ठो न च ताववलोकयत् ॥१३-५२-३७॥
tam anvagacchatāṁ tau tu kṣudhitaū śramakarśitau। bhāryāpatī muniśreṣṭho na ca tāv avalokayata ॥13-52-37॥
[तम् (tam) - him; अन्वगच्छताम् (anv-agacchatām) - (they) followed; तौ (tau) - those two; तु (tu) - but; क्षुधितौ (kṣudhitaū) - hungry (dual); श्रमकर्शितौ (śrama-karśitau) - emaciated by fatigue (dual); भार्यापती (bhāryā-patī) - husband and wife; मुनिश्रेष्ठः (muni-śreṣṭhaḥ) - best of sages; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; तौ (tau) - those two; अवलोकयत् (avalokayat) - looked at;]
(Him (they) followed, those two but, hungry, emaciated by fatigue—husband and wife; the best of sages did not and those two look at.)
But those two, the husband and wife, hungry and emaciated by fatigue, followed him; yet the best of sages did not look at them. (13-52-37)
तयोस्तु प्रेक्षतोरेव भार्गवाणां कुलोद्वहः। अन्तर्हितोऽभूद्राजेन्द्र ततो राजापतत्क्षितौ ॥१३-५२-३८॥
tayostu prekṣatoreva bhārgavāṇāṃ kulodvahaḥ। antarhito'bhūdrājendra tato rājāpatatkṣitau॥13-52-38॥
[तयोः (tayoḥ) - of those two; तु (tu) - but; प्रेक्षतोः (prekṣatoḥ) - of the ones watching; एव (eva) - just; indeed; भार्गवाणां (bhārgavāṇāṃ) - of the Bhārgavas; कुलोद्वहः (kulodvahaḥ) - the illuminator of the family; अन्तर्हितः (antarhitaḥ) - disappeared; अभूत् (abhūt) - became; was; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; ततः (tataḥ) - then; राजा (rājā) - the king; अपतत् (apatat) - fell down; क्षितौ (kṣitau) - upon the ground;]
(Of those two but, just as they watched, the illuminator of the Bhārgavas' family disappeared, O king; then the king fell down upon the ground.)
But as those two watched, O king, the chief of the Bhārgavas vanished; then the king fell down on the ground. (13-52-38)
स मुहूर्तं समाश्वस्य सह देव्या महाद्युतिः। पुनरन्वेषणे यत्नमकरोत्परमं तदा ॥१३-५२-३९॥
sa muhūrtaṃ samāśvasya saha devyā mahādyutiḥ। punaranveṣaṇe yatnamakarotparamaṃ tadā ॥13-52-39॥
[स (sa) - he; मुहूर्तं (muhūrtam) - for a moment; समाश्वस्य (samāśvasya) - having composed himself; सह (saha) - with; देव्या (devyā) - the lady; महाद्युतिः (mahādyutiḥ) - the one of great splendor; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; अन्वेषणे (anveṣaṇe) - in searching; यत्नम् (yatnam) - effort; अकरोत् (akarot) - made; परमम् (paramam) - supreme; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(He, for a moment, having composed himself with the lady, the one of great splendor, again, in searching, made effort supreme then.)
