तस्मिन्नन्तर्हिते विप्रे राजा किमकरोत्तदा। भार्या चास्य महाभागा तन्मे ब्रूहि पितामह ॥१३-५३-१॥
tasminn antarhite vipre rājā kim akarot tadā। bhāryā ca asya mahābhāgā tan me brūhi pitāmaha ॥13-53-1॥
[तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in him; therein; अन्तर्हिते (antarhite) - having disappeared; being hidden; विप्रे (vipre) - the Brāhmaṇa; sage; राजा (rājā) - the king; किम् (kim) - what; अकरोत् (akarot) - did; तदा (tadā) - then; भार्या (bhāryā) - the wife; च (ca) - and; अस्य (asya) - his; महाभागा (mahābhāgā) - most fortunate; highly blessed; तत् (tat) - that; मे (me) - to me; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - tell; पितामह (pitāmaha) - O grandsire;]
(In him having disappeared, the Brāhmaṇa, the king what did then? The wife also, his, most fortunate; that to me tell, O grandsire.)
When that Brāhmaṇa had disappeared, what did the king do then? And what about his most fortunate wife? Tell me that, O grandsire. (13-53-1)

(Not having seen that sage together with (his) wife, he the king, exhausted, turned back, ashamed, with lost consciousness.)
Not finding that sage with his wife, the king, exhausted, ashamed, and faint, turned back. (13-53-2)
स प्रविश्य पुरीं दीनो नाभ्यभाषत किञ्चन। तदेव चिन्तयामास च्यवनस्य विचेष्टितम् ॥१३-५३-३॥
sa praviśya purīṃ dīno nābhyabhāṣata kiñcana. tadeva cintayāmāsa cyavanasya viceṣṭitam ॥13-53-3॥
[स (sa) - he; प्रविश्य (praviśya) - having entered; पुरीं (purīṃ) - the city; दीनो (dīnaḥ) - dejected; न (na) - not; अभ्यभाषत (abhyabhāṣata) - spoke; किञ्चन (kiñcana) - anything; तदेव (tadeva) - that indeed; चिन्तयामास (cintayāmāsa) - began to ponder; च्यवनस्य (cyavanasya) - of Cyavana; विचेष्टितम् (viceṣṭitam) - the deed;]
(He, having entered the city, dejected, did not speak anything. That indeed he began to ponder — the deed of Cyavana.)
He entered the city dejected and did not say anything, but only thought about what Cyavana had done. (13-53-3)
अथ शून्येन मनसा प्रविवेश गृहं नृपः। ददर्श शयने तस्मिञ्शयानं भृगुनन्दनम् ॥१३-५३-४॥
atha śūnyena manasā praviveśa gṛhaṁ nṛpaḥ। dadarśa śayane tasmiñ śayānaṁ bhṛgunandanam॥13-53-4॥

(Then with empty mind the king entered the house. On the bed, he saw lying the son of Bhṛgu. (13-53-4))

विस्मितौ तौ तु दृष्ट्वा तं तदाश्चर्यं विचिन्त्य च। दर्शनात्तस्य च मुनेर्विश्रान्तौ सम्बभूवतुः ॥१३-५३-५॥
vismitau tau tu dṛṣṭvā taṃ tad-āścaryaṃ vicintya ca. darśanāt tasya ca muner viśrāntau sambabhūvatuḥ ॥13-53-5॥

(Amazed, the two but, having seen that, that wonder, having reflected upon and, from the vision of him and of the sage, relaxed the two became.)
The two, amazed, after seeing that wonder and reflecting upon it, from beholding that sage, both became relaxed. (13-53-5)
यथास्थानं तु तौ स्थित्वा भूयस्तं संववाहतुः। अथापरेण पार्श्वेन सुष्वाप स महामुनिः ॥१३-५३-६॥
yathāsthānaṃ tu tau sthitvā bhūyas taṃ saṃvavāhatuḥ। athāpareṇa pārśvena suṣvāpa sa mahāmuniḥ॥13-53-6॥
[यथास्थानं (yathāsthānam) - in their proper place; तु (tu) - but; तौ (tau) - the two (he and she); स्थित्वा (sthitvā) - having stood; भूयः (bhūyas) - again; तं (tam) - him; संववाहतुः (saṃvavāhatuḥ) - carried together; अथ (atha) - then; अपरेण (apareṇa) - with another; पार्श्वेन (pārśvena) - by side; सुष्वाप (suṣvāpa) - slept; स (sa) - he; महामुनिः (mahāmuniḥ) - great sage;]
(In their proper place but the two having stood again him carried together. Then with another side slept he, the great sage.)
But, having stood in their proper places, those two again together carried him. Then the great sage slept on his other side. (13-53-6)
तेनैव च स कालेन प्रत्यबुध्यत वीर्यवान्। न च तौ चक्रतुः किञ्चिद्विकारं भयशङ्कितौ ॥१३-५३-७॥
tenaiva ca sa kālena pratyabudhyata vīryavān। na ca tau cakratuḥ kiñcid vikāraṃ bhayaśaṅkitau॥13-53-7॥
[तेनैव (tenaiva) - by that very; च (ca) - and; स (sa) - he; कालेन (kālena) - by time; प्रत्यबुध्यत (pratyabudhyata) - awoke; वीर्यवान् (vīryavān) - strong; endowed with energy; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; तौ (tau) - those two; चक्रतुः (cakratuḥ) - did; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; विकारं (vikāraṃ) - change; भयशङ्कितौ (bhayaśaṅkitau) - fear-suspecting;]
(By that very (instrumentality) and by time, he who was strong awoke. And those two did not make any change, being suspecting of danger.)
By that very means and by the influence of time, the powerful one woke up; and the two (others), suspecting danger, did not make any change. (13-53-7)
प्रतिबुद्धस्तु स मुनिस्तौ प्रोवाच विशां पते। तैलाभ्यङ्गो दीयतां मे स्नास्येऽहमिति भारत ॥१३-५३-८॥
pratibuddhas tu sa munis tau provāca viśāṃ pate. tailābhyaṅgo dīyatāṃ me snāsye'ham iti bhārata ॥13-53-8॥
[प्रतिबुद्धः (pratibuddhaḥ) - awakened; तु (tu) - but; सः (saḥ) - he; मुनिः (muniḥ) - sage; तौ (tau) - to those two; प्रोवाच (provāca) - said; विशां (viśām) - of the kings; पते (pate) - O lord; तैल (taila) - oil; अभ्यङ्गः (abhyaṅgaḥ) - anointment; दीयताम् (dīyatām) - let it be given; मे (me) - to me; स्नास्ये (snāsye) - I shall bathe; अहम् (aham) - I; इति (iti) - thus; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(Awakened but he sage to those two said O lord of the kings. Oil anointment let it be given to me, I shall bathe, I thus O Bhārata (13-53-8))
But the awakened sage said to those two, "O lord of kings, let oil for anointing be given to me, I shall bathe," thus, O Bhārata. (13-53-8)
तथेति तौ प्रतिश्रुत्य क्षुधितौ श्रमकर्शितौ। शतपाकेन तैलेन महार्हेणोपतस्थतुः ॥१३-५३-९॥
tatheti tau pratiśrutya kṣudhitau śramakarśitau. śatapākena tailena mahārheṇopatastathuḥ ॥13-53-9॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; इति (iti) - thus (quoting, in this way); तौ (tau) - the two; प्रतिश्रुत्य (pratiśrutya) - having promised; क्षुधितौ (kṣudhitau) - hungry (dual); श्रमकर्शितौ (śrama-karśitau) - worn down by fatigue (dual); शतपाकेन (śatapākena) - boiled a hundred times (instrumental); तैलेन (tailena) - with oil (instrumental); महार्हेण (mahārheṇa) - very precious (instrumental); उपतस्थतुः (upatastathuḥ) - they both approached;]
("Thus," the two, having promised, hungry and worn down by fatigue, with oil boiled a hundred times and very precious, both approached.)
"Thus," having promised, the two, hungry and exhausted from exertion, both approached with very precious oil that had been boiled a hundred times. (13-53-9)
ततः सुखासीनमृषिं वाग्यतौ संववाहतुः। न च पर्याप्तमित्याह भार्गवः सुमहातपाः ॥१३-५३-१०॥
tataḥ sukhāsīnam ṛṣiṁ vāgyatau saṁvavāhatuḥ. na ca paryāptam ity āha bhārgavaḥ sumahātapāḥ ॥13-53-10॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सुखासीनम् (sukhāsīnam) - comfortably seated; ऋषिं (ṛṣiṁ) - sage; वाग्यतौ (vāgyatau) - obedient to words; संववाहतुः (saṁvavāhatuḥ) - they carried; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; पर्याप्तम् (paryāptam) - sufficient; इति (iti) - "thus"; आह (āha) - said; भार्गवः (bhārgavaḥ) - the descendant of Bhṛgu; सुमहातपाः (sumahātapāḥ) - of great austerity;]
(Then the obedient-to-words (servants) carried the comfortably seated sage. And the descendant of Bhṛgu, of great austerity, said: "Not sufficient." (13-53-10))
Then, those who obeyed commands carried the sage, who was seated comfortably. Yet the son of Bhṛgu, endowed with great austerities, said: "It is not sufficient." (13-53-10)
यदा तौ निर्विकारौ तु लक्षयामास भार्गवः। तत उत्थाय सहसा स्नानशालां विवेश ह ॥ कॢप्तमेव तु तत्रासीत्स्नानीयं पार्थिवोचितम् ॥१३-५३-११॥
yadā tau nirvikārau tu lakṣayāmāsa bhārgavaḥ। tata utthāya sahasā snānaśālāṃ viveśa ha ॥ kḷptameva tu tatrāsītsnānīyaṃ pārthivocitam ॥13-53-11॥
[यदा (yadā) - when; तौ (tau) - those two; निर्विकारौ (nirvikārau) - unchanging; तु (tu) - but; लक्षयामास (lakṣayāmāsa) - (he) observed; भार्गवः (bhārgavaḥ) - Bhārgava (the descendant of Bhṛgu); तत (tata) - then; उत्थाय (utthāya) - rising; सहसा (sahasā) - quickly; स्नानशालां (snānaśālām) - bathing hall; विवेश (viveśa) - (he) entered; ह (ha) - indeed; कॢप्तम् (kḷptam) - prepared; एव (eva) - indeed; तु (tu) - but; तत्र (tatra) - there; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; स्नानीयं (snānīyaṃ) - materials for bathing; पार्थिवोचितम् (pārthivocitam) - proper for a king;]
(When Bhārgava observed those two unchanging, then rising quickly, he indeed entered the bathing hall. There, indeed, the bathing materials suitable for a king were prepared.)
When Bhārgava observed that those two were undisturbed, he rose quickly and entered the bathing hall. There, materials for the bath appropriate for a king were already prepared. (13-53-11)
असत्कृत्य तु तत्सर्वं तत्रैवान्तरधीयत। स मुनिः पुनरेवाथ नृपतेः पश्यतस्तदा ॥ नासूयां चक्रतुस्तौ च दम्पती भरतर्षभ ॥१३-५३-१२॥
asatkṛtya tu tatsarvaṃ tatraivāntaradhīyata। sa muniḥ punarevātha nṛpateḥ paśyatastadā ॥ nāsūyāṃ cakratustau ca dampatī bharatarṣabha ॥13-53-12॥
[असत्कृत्य (asatkṛtya) - disregarding; having not given due respect; तु (tu) - but; तत्सर्वं (tatsarvaṃ) - all that; तत्रैव (tatraiva) - right there; अन्तरधीयत (antaradhīyata) - disappeared; स (sa) - he; मुनिः (muniḥ) - sage; पुनरेव (punareva) - again indeed; अथ (atha) - then; नृपतेः (nṛpateḥ) - of the king; पश्यतः (paśyataḥ) - while (the king) was watching; तदा (tadā) - then; न (na) - not; असूयां (asūyām) - fault-finding; चक्रतुः (cakratuḥ) - they did; तौ (tau) - those two; च (ca) - and; दम्पती (dampatī) - the husband and wife; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of the Bharatas;]
(But disregarding all that, right there it disappeared. He, the sage, then again indeed, while the king was watching at that time, those two, the husband and wife, did not find fault, O best of the Bharatas. (13-53-12))

अथ स्नातः स भगवान्सिंहासनगतः प्रभुः। दर्शयामास कुशिकं सभार्यं भृगुनन्दनः ॥१३-५३-१३॥
atha snātaḥ sa bhagavān siṃhāsanagataḥ prabhuḥ। darśayāmāsa kuśikaṃ sabhāryaṃ bhṛgunandanaḥ॥13-53-13॥
[अथ (atha) - then; स्नातः (snātaḥ) - having bathed; स (sa) - he; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the revered one; सिंहासनगतः (siṃhāsanagataḥ) - having ascended the throne; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - the master; दर्शयामास (darśayāmāsa) - caused to be shown; कुशिकं (kuśikaṃ) - Kusika; सभार्यं (sabhāryaṃ) - with his wife; भृगुनन्दनः (bhṛgunandanaḥ) - the descendant of Bhrigu;]
(Then, having bathed, he—the revered one, having ascended the throne, the master—caused Kusika, with his wife, to be shown, the descendant of Bhrigu.)

संहृष्टवदनो राजा सभार्यः कुशिको मुनिम्। सिद्धमन्नमिति प्रह्वो निर्विकारो न्यवेदयत् ॥१३-५३-१४॥
saṁhṛṣṭavadano rājā sabhāryaḥ kuśiko munim। siddhamannamiti prahvo nirvikāro nyavedayat ॥13-53-14॥
[संहृष्टवदनः (saṁhṛṣṭavadanaḥ) - with delighted face; राजा (rājā) - the king; सभार्यः (sabhāryaḥ) - with his wife; कुशिकः (kuśikaḥ) - Kuśika; मुनिम् (munim) - the sage; सिद्धमन्नम् (siddhamannam) - prepared food; इति (iti) - thus; प्रह्वः (prahvaḥ) - humbly; निर्विकारः (nirvikāraḥ) - without change (of expression); न्यवेदयत् (nyavedayat) - offered;]
(With delighted face, the king Kuśika, together with his wife, humbly and without change (of expression), offered to the sage the prepared food, saying thus.)
The king Kuśika, delighted in expression and accompanied by his wife, humbly and without any change, offered the prepared food to the sage, saying, "It is ready." (13-53-14)
आनीयतामिति मुनिस्तं चोवाच नराधिपम्। राजा च समुपाजह्रे तदन्नं सह भार्यया ॥१३-५३-१५॥
ānīyatām iti munis taṃ ca uvāca narādhipam| rājā ca samupājahre tad annaṃ saha bhāryayā ॥13-53-15॥

(Let it be brought—thus the sage said to him and (to) the king. And the king duly brought that food with (his) wife.)
“Let it be brought,” thus the sage said to the king. And the king, along with his wife, brought that food. (13-53-15)
मांसप्रकारान्विविधाञ्शाकानि विविधानि च। वेसवारविकारांश्च पानकानि लघूनि च ॥१३-५३-१६॥
māṁsaprakārān vividhaāṁś śākāni vividhāni ca। vesavāravikārāṁś ca pānakāni laghūni ca॥13-53-16॥

रसालापूपकांश्चित्रान्मोदकानथ षाडवान्। रसान्नानाप्रकारांश्च वन्यं च मुनिभोजनम् ॥१३-५३-१७॥
rasālāpūpakāṁścitrānmodakānatha ṣāḍavān। rasānnānāprakārāṁśca vanyaṁ ca munibhojanam ॥13-53-17॥

फलानि च विचित्राणि तथा भोज्यानि भूरिशः। बदरेङ्गुदकाश्मर्यभल्लातकवटानि च ॥१३-५३-१८॥
phalāni ca vicitrāṇi tathā bhojyāni bhūriśaḥ। badara-eṅguda-kāśmarya-bhallātaka-vaṭāni ca ॥13-53-18॥
[फलानि (phalāni) - fruits (plural, neuter accusative); च (ca) - and; विचित्राणि (vicitrāṇi) - various; diverse; तथा (tathā) - likewise; also; भोज्यानि (bhojyāni) - edibles; things to be eaten; भूरिशः (bhūriśaḥ) - in large quantities; abundant; बदर (badara) - jujube; एङ्गुद (eṅguda) - long-bean; काश्मर्य (kāśmarya) - Gmelina arborea; भल्लातक (bhallātaka) - marking-nut tree; वटानि (vaṭāni) - banyan fruits (plural, accusative); च (ca) - and;]
(Fruits and various, likewise edibles abundant; badara, eṅguda, kāśmarya, bhallātaka, vaṭa, and.)
There were fruits and various other foods in abundance—such as jujube, long-bean, kāśmarya, marking-nut, and banyan fruits. (13-53-18)
गृहस्थानां च यद्भोज्यं यच्चापि वनवासिनाम्। सर्वमाहारयामास राजा शापभयान्मुनेः ॥१३-५३-१९॥
gṛhasthānāṃ ca yad bhojyaṃ yac cāpi vanavāsinām। sarvam āhārayāmāsa rājā śāpa-bhayān muneḥ ॥13-53-19॥
[गृहस्थानाम् (gṛhasthānām) - of those dwelling at home; च (ca) - and; यत् (yad) - that which; भोज्यम् (bhojyaṃ) - is to be eaten; यत् (yad) - that which; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; वनवासिनाम् (vanavāsinām) - of those who dwell in the forest; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; आहारयामास (āhārayāmāsa) - caused to bring; राजा (rājā) - the king; शापभयात् (śāpa-bhayāt) - from fear of the curse; मुनेः (muneḥ) - of the sage;]
(Of those dwelling at home and that which is to be eaten, and also (of) those who dwell in the forest, all (of these) the king caused to bring, from fear of the curse of the sage.)
The king, out of fear of the sage's curse, caused all the food of both householders and forest-dwellers to be brought. (13-53-19)
अथ सर्वमुपन्यस्तमग्रतश्च्यवनस्य तत्। ततः सर्वं समानीय तच्च शय्यासनं मुनिः ॥१३-५३-२०॥
atha sarvam upanyastam agrataḥ cyavanasya tat। tataḥ sarvaṃ samānīya tac ca śayya-āsanaṃ muniḥ ॥13-53-20॥

वस्त्रैः शुभैरवच्छाद्य भोजनोपस्करैः सह। सर्वमादीपयामास च्यवनो भृगुनन्दनः ॥१३-५३-२१॥

(Having covered with auspicious cloths together with dining utensils, all Cyavana, descendant of Bhṛgu, caused to shine.)
Cyavana, the descendant of Bhṛgu, covered everything with auspicious cloths and dining utensils, and made everything splendid. (13-53-21)
न च तौ चक्रतुः कोपं दम्पती सुमहाव्रतौ। तयोः सम्प्रेक्षतोरेव पुनरन्तर्हितोऽभवत् ॥१३-५३-२२॥
na ca tau cakratuḥ kopaṃ dampatī sumahāvratau। tayoḥ samprekṣatoreva punarantarhito'bhavat ॥13-53-22॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; तौ (tau) - those two; चक्रतुः (cakratuḥ) - did make; कोपं (kopaṃ) - anger; दम्पती (dampatī) - the couple; सुमहाव्रतौ (sumahāvratau) - of great vow; तयोः (tayoḥ) - of those two; सम्प्रेक्षतोः (samprekṣatoḥ) - observing; एव (eva) - just; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; अन्तर्हितः (antarhitaḥ) - disappeared; अभवत् (abhavat) - became;]
(And not those two did make anger, the couple of great vow. Of those two observing just, again disappeared became.)
And the couple of great vows did not become angry. As those two were just observing, he disappeared again. (13-53-22)
तत्रैव च स राजर्षिस्तस्थौ तां रजनीं तदा। सभार्यो वाग्यतः श्रीमान्न च तं कोप आविशत् ॥१३-५३-२३॥
tatraiva ca sa rājarṣiḥ tasthau tāṃ rajanīṃ tadā। sabhāryaḥ vāgyataḥ śrīmān na ca taṃ kopa āviśat ॥13-53-23॥

(Right there and he, the royal sage, remained that night then, with wife, silent, illustrious, and not him anger entered.)

नित्यं संस्कृतमन्नं तु विविधं राजवेश्मनि। शयनानि च मुख्यानि परिषेकाश्च पुष्कलाः ॥१३-५३-२४॥
nityaṃ saṃskṛtam annaṃ tu vividhaṃ rājaveśmani। śayanāni ca mukhyāni pariṣekāś ca puṣkalāḥ॥13-53-24॥

In the royal palace, there was always refined and varied food; principal beds and abundant ablutions as well. (13-53-24)
वस्त्रं च विविधाकारमभवत्समुपार्जितम्। न शशाक ततो द्रष्टुमन्तरं च्यवनस्तदा ॥१३-५३-२५॥
vastraṁ ca vividhākāram abhavat samupārjitam। na śaśāka tato draṣṭum antaraṁ cyavanās tadā॥13-53-25॥

(Again indeed, and the sage among the twice-born spoke to Kushika, the king: "With (your) wife, quickly carry me by the chariot to where I say, I." (13-53-26))

(Thus, and he said the king without hesitation to the ascetic: "Let the chariot for sport be, O Lord, or (let it be) a battle chariot." (13-53-27))

(Thus addressed, he sage by him the king delighted that speech; Cyavana replied this delighted conqueror of enemy cities.)

सज्जीकुरु रथं क्षिप्रं यस्ते साङ्ग्रामिको मतः। सायुधः सपताकश्च सशक्तिः कणयष्टिमान् ॥१३-५३-२९॥
sajjīkuru rathaṃ kṣipraṃ yaste sāṅgrāmiko mataḥ। sāyudhaḥ sapatākaś ca saśaktiḥ kaṇayaṣṭimān ॥13-53-29॥
[सज्जीकुरु (sajjīkuru) - make ready; रथं (rathaṃ) - chariot (accusative singular); क्षिप्रं (kṣipraṃ) - quickly; यः (yaḥ) - which; ते (te) - for you; साङ्ग्रामिकः (sāṅgrāmikaḥ) - fit for battle; मतः (mataḥ) - is considered; सायुधः (sāyudhaḥ) - equipped with weapons; सपताकः (sapatākaḥ) - with a banner; च (ca) - and; सशक्तिः (saśaktiḥ) - with a spear; कणयष्टिमान् (kaṇayaṣṭimān) - having a whip;]
(Make ready the chariot quickly which for you is considered fit for battle, equipped with weapons, with a banner and with a spear, having a whip.)
Quickly prepare the chariot that is considered suitable for you in battle, it is armed, bears a banner, is equipped with a spear, and has a whip. (13-53-29)
किङ्किणीशतनिर्घोषो युक्तस्तोमरकल्पनैः। गदाखड्गनिबद्धश्च परमेषुशतान्वितः ॥१३-५३-३०॥
kiṅkiṇī-śata-nirghoṣo yukta-stomara-kalpanaiḥ। gadā-khaḍga-nibaddhaś ca parameṣu-śatānvitaḥ ॥13-53-30॥
[किङ्किणीशत-निर्घोषः (kiṅkiṇī-śata-nirghoṣaḥ) - having the sound of a hundred small bells; युक्त-स्तोमर-कल्पनैः (yukta-stomara-kalpanaiḥ) - equipped with javelin-like arrangements; गदा-खड्ग-निबद्धः (gadā-khaḍga-nibaddhaḥ) - adorned with maces and swords; च (ca) - and; परमेषु-शतान्वितः (parameṣu-śatānvitaḥ) - endowed with a hundred great arrows;]
(With the sound of a hundred small bells, equipped with javelin-like arrangements, adorned with maces and swords, and endowed with a hundred great arrows.)
He resounded with the jingle of a hundred small bells, was furnished with devices resembling javelins, adorned with maces and swords, and was equipped with a hundred powerful arrows. (13-53-30)
ततः स तं तथेत्युक्त्वा कल्पयित्वा महारथम्। भार्यां वामे धुरि तदा चात्मानं दक्षिणे तथा ॥१३-५३-३१॥

(Three-pronged, with a diamond-needle tip, goad, there and placed. All this thereafter having given, the king speech then spoke.)
He placed there a three-pronged goad, with a tip like a diamond needle. Having given all this, the king then spoke these words. (13-53-32)
भगवन्क्व रथो यातु ब्रवीतु भृगुनन्दनः। यत्र वक्ष्यसि विप्रर्षे तत्र यास्यति ते रथः ॥१३-५३-३३॥
bhagavan kva ratho yātu bravītu bhṛgunandanaḥ। yatra vakṣyasi viprarṣe tatra yāsyati te rathaḥ॥13-53-33॥

(O fortunate one, where the chariot should go, let the descendant of Bhṛgu say; where you will say, O sage among Brāhmaṇas, there your chariot will go. (13-53-33))
O Lord, let the descendant of Bhṛgu say where the chariot should go. Wherever you say, O sage among Brāhmaṇas, there your chariot will go. (13-53-33)
एवमुक्तस्तु भगवान्प्रत्युवाचाथ तं नृपम्। इतःप्रभृति यातव्यं पदकं पदकं शनैः ॥१३-५३-३४॥
evam-uktas tu bhagavān pratyuvācātha taṃ nṛpam। itaḥ-prabhṛti yātavyaṃ padakaṃ padakaṃ śanaiḥ ॥13-53-34॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - having been spoken; तु (tu) - but; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the Blessed Lord; प्रत्युवाच (pratyuvāca) - replied; अथ (atha) - then; तम् (tam) - to him; नृपम् (nṛpam) - to the king; इतःप्रभृति (itaḥ-prabhṛti) - from now on; यातव्यम् (yātavyam) - it should be gone; पदकम् पदकम् (padakaṃ padakaṃ) - step by step; शनैः (śanaiḥ) - slowly;]
(Thus having been addressed, but the Blessed Lord replied then to him, to the king: "From now on, it should be gone step by step, slowly." (13-53-34))

[श्रमः (śramaḥ) (śramaḥ) - fatigue; मम (mama) (mama) - of me; यथा (yathā) (yathā) - so that; न (na) (na) - not; स्यात् (syāt) (syāt) - may be; तथा (tathā) (tathā) - thus; मे (me) (me) - by me; छन्दचारिणौ (chandacāriṇau) (chandacāriṇau) - those who move at will (dual); सुखम् (sukham) (sukham) - comfort; च (ca) (ca) - and; एव (eva) (eva) - indeed; अस्मि (asmi) (asmi) - I am; वोढव्यः (voḍhavyaḥ) (voḍhavyaḥ) - to be borne; जनः (janaḥ) (janaḥ) - person; सर्वः (sarvaḥ) (sarvaḥ) - everyone; च (ca) (ca) - and; पश्यतु (paśyatu) (paśyatu) - may see;]
(Fatigue of me so that not may be, thus by me those who move at will. Comfort and indeed I am to be borne, person, everyone and may see.)
So that I may not become fatigued, let my two will-moving beings (vehicles) act thus. Let everyone see that I too am to be borne in comfort. (13-53-35)
नोत्सार्यः पथिकः कश्चित्तेभ्यो दास्याम्यहं वसु। ब्राह्मणेभ्यश्च ये कामानर्थयिष्यन्ति मां पथि ॥१३-५३-३६॥
notsāryaḥ pathikaḥ kaścit tebhyo dāsyāmy ahaṃ vasu. brāhmaṇebhyaś ca ye kāmān arthayiṣyanti māṃ pathi ॥13-53-36॥
[नोत्सार्यः (notsāryaḥ) - not-repelled; not to be turned away; पथिकः (pathikaḥ) - traveller; कश्चित् (kaścit) - any; someone; तेभ्यः (tebhyaḥ) - to them; दास्यामि (dāsyāmi) - I will give; अहम् (aham) - I; वसु (vasu) - wealth; ब्राह्मणेभ्यः (brāhmaṇebhyaḥ) - to the Brāhmaṇas; च (ca) - and; ये (ye) - who; कामान् (kāmān) - desires; अर्थयिष्यन्ति (arthayiṣyanti) - will request; माम् (mām) - me; पथि (pathi) - on the road;]
(Not to be turned away, any traveller—to them I will give wealth. And to the Brāhmaṇas, who will request desires from me on the road.)
I will not turn away any traveller; to them I shall give wealth. And to the Brāhmaṇas, whoever asks me for any desires on the road, I will grant them. (13-53-36)
सर्वं दास्याम्यशेषेण धनं रत्नानि चैव हि। क्रियतां निखिलेनैतन्मा विचारय पार्थिव ॥१३-५३-३७॥
sarvaṁ dāsyāmyaśeṣeṇa dhanaṁ ratnāni caiva hi। kriyatāṁ nikhilenaitanmā vicāraya pārthiva ॥13-53-37॥
[सर्वं (sarvam) - all; everything; दास्याम्यशेषेण (dāsyāmi aśeṣeṇa) - I shall give completely; without remainder; धनं (dhanam) - wealth; रत्नानि (ratnāni) - gems; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; हि (hi) - certainly; क्रियतां (kriyatām) - let it be done; निखिलेन (nikhilena) - entirely; with entirety; एतत् (etat) - this; मा (mā) - do not; विचारय (vicāraya) - deliberate; consider; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - O king;]
(All I shall give completely, wealth, gems and indeed certainly. Let this be done in entirety, this do not consider, O king.)
I will give everything completely — wealth and gems indeed. Let all this be done at once; do not hesitate, O king. (13-53-37)
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा राजा भृत्यानथाब्रवीत्। यद्यद्ब्रूयान्मुनिस्तत्तत्सर्वं देयमशङ्कितैः ॥१३-५३-३८॥
tasya tadvacanaṃ śrutvā rājā bhṛtyān athābravīt। yadyad brūyān munis tat tat sarvaṃ deyam aśaṅkitaiḥ ॥13-53-38॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; तत्-वचनम् (tat-vacanam) - that statement; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; राजा (rājā) - the king; भृत्यान् (bhṛtyān) - (to) the servants; अथ (atha) - then; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; यत्-यत् (yad-yad) - whatever; ब्रूयात् (brūyāt) - might say; मुनिः (muniḥ) - the sage; तत्-तत् (tat-tat) - that (same); सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; देयम् (deyam) - to be given; अशङ्कितैः (aśaṅkitaiḥ) - without suspicion;]
(Of him that statement having heard, the king to the servants then said: "Whatever the sage might say, that all is to be given without suspicion." (13-53-38))
Hearing his statement, the king then said to the servants: "Whatever the sage requests, give all of it without any suspicion." (13-53-38)
ततो रत्नान्यनेकानि स्त्रियो युग्यमजाविकम्। कृताकृतं च कनकं गजेन्द्राश्चाचलोपमाः ॥१३-५३-३९॥
tato ratnāny anekāni striyo yugyam ajāvikam। kṛtākṛtaṃ ca kanakaṃ gajendrāś cācalopamāḥ॥13-53-39॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; रत्नानि (ratnāni) - gems; अनेकानि (anekāni) - many; स्त्रियः (striyaḥ) - women; युग्यम् (yugyam) - yokeable (cattle); अजाविकम् (ajāvikam) - goats and sheep; कृताकृतं (kṛtākṛtam) - manufactured and unmanufactured; च (ca) - and; कनकम् (kanakam) - gold; गजेन्द्राः (gajendrāḥ) - great elephants; च (ca) - and; अचलोपमाः (acala-upamāḥ) - mountain-like (in strength or size);]
(Then many gems, women, yokeable goats and sheep, both manufactured and unmanufactured gold, and great elephants like mountains.)

अन्वगच्छन्त तमृषिं राजामात्याश्च सर्वशः। हाहाभूतं च तत्सर्वमासीन्नगरमार्तिमत् ॥१३-५३-४०॥
anv-agacchanta tam ṛṣiṁ rājāmātyāś ca sarvaśaḥ। hāhābhūtaṁ ca tat sarvam āsīn nagaram ārtimat ॥13-53-40॥
[अन्वगच्छन्त (anv-agacchanta) - followed after; तम् (tam) - him; ऋषिम् (ṛṣim) - sage; राजामात्याः (rājāmātyāḥ) - the king and ministers; च (ca) - and; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - all together; हाहाभूतं (hāhābhūtam) - become tumultuous with cries; च (ca) - and; तत् (tat) - that; सर्वम् (sarvam) - entire; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; नगरम् (nagaram) - city; आर्तिमत् (ārtimat) - possessed of distress;]
(The king and ministers all together followed after him, the sage; and that entire city was possessed of distress, become tumultuous with cries.)

तौ तीक्ष्णाग्रेण सहसा प्रतोदेन प्रचोदितौ। पृष्ठे विद्धौ कटे चैव निर्विकारौ तमूहतुः ॥१३-५३-४१॥
tau tīkṣṇāgreṇa sahasā pratodena pracoditau। pṛṣṭhe viddhau kaṭe caiva nirvikārau tamūhatuḥ॥13-53-41॥
[तौ (tau) - those two; तीक्ष्णाग्रेण (tīkṣṇāgreṇa) - with the sharp-pointed; सहसा (sahasā) - suddenly; प्रतोदेन (pratodena) - with the goad; प्रचोदितौ (pracoditau) - urged; पृष्ठे (pṛṣṭhe) - on the back; विद्धौ (viddhau) - pierced; कटे (kaṭe) - on the side; चैव (ca eva) - and also; निर्विकारौ (nirvikārau) - unmoved; तम् (tam) - him; ऊहतुः (ūhatuḥ) - they carried;]

बहुशो भृशविद्धौ तौ क्षरमाणौ क्षतोद्भवम्। ददृशाते महाराज पुष्पिताविव किंशुकौ ॥१३-५३-४३॥
bahuśo bhṛśaviddhau tau kṣaramāṇau kṣatodbhavam। dadṛśāte mahārāja puṣpitāviva kiṃśukau ॥13-53-43॥
[बहुशः (bahuśaḥ) - many times; repeatedly; भृशविद्धौ (bhṛśaviddhau) - greatly-pierced (dual); struck deeply; तौ (tau) - those two; क्षरमाणौ (kṣaramāṇau) - flowing (dual); shedding; क्षतः-उद्भवम् (kṣata-udbhavam) - wound-originated; issuing from wounds; ददृशाते (dadṛśāte) - were seen (dual); महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; पुष्पितौ-इव (puṣpitau-iva) - blossoming as if; like blossoming; किंशुकौ (kiṃśukau) - butea trees (dual);]
(Many times deeply-pierced, those two, flowing wound-originated (blood), were seen, O great king, like blossoming Butea trees.)
O great king, those two, repeatedly pierced and streaming blood from their wounds, looked just like blossoming Kiṃśuka trees. (13-53-43)
तौ दृष्ट्वा पौरवर्गस्तु भृशं शोकपरायणः। अभिशापभयात्त्रस्तो न च किञ्चिदुवाच ह ॥१३-५३-४४॥
tau dṛṣṭvā pauravargas tu bhṛśaṃ śokaparāyaṇaḥ। abhiśāpabhayāt trasto na ca kiñcid uvāca ha॥13-53-44॥
[तौ (tau) - those two; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; पौरवर्गः (pauravargaḥ) - the people (citizens); तु (tu) - but; भृशं (bhṛśam) - exceedingly; शोकपरायणः (śokaparāyaṇaḥ) - given over to grief; अभिशापभयात् (abhiśāpabhayāt) - from fear of a curse; त्रस्तः (trastaḥ) - terrified; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; उवाच (uvāca) - spoke; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(Those two having seen, the group of citizens but exceedingly given over to grief, from fear of a curse, terrified, not and anything spoke indeed.)
Having seen those two, the group of citizens, exceedingly grief-stricken and terrified out of fear of a curse, did not say anything at all. (13-53-44)
द्वन्द्वशश्चाब्रुवन्सर्वे पश्यध्वं तपसो बलम्। क्रुद्धा अपि मुनिश्रेष्ठं वीक्षितुं नैव शक्नुमः ॥१३-५३-४५॥
dvandvaśaścābruvansarve paśyadhvaṃ tapaso balam। kruddhā api muniśreṣṭhaṃ vīkṣituṃ naiva śaknumaḥ॥13-53-45॥
[द्वन्द्वशः (dvandvaśaḥ) - the gods of dualities (sensory pairs); च (ca) - and; अब्रुवन् (abravan) - said; सर्वे (sarve) - all; पश्यध्वम् (paśyadhvam) - behold; तपसः (tapasaḥ) - of austerity; बलम् (balam) - power; क्रुद्धाः (kruddhāḥ) - angry; अपि (api) - even; मुनिश्रेष्ठम् (muniśreṣṭham) - the best of sages; वीक्षितुम् (vīkṣitum) - to see; नैव (naiva) - not indeed; शक्नुमः (śaknumaḥ) - we are able;]
(And the gods of dualities said, "Behold the power of austerity. Although angry, even we are not able indeed to see the best of sages." (13-53-45))
And the gods of dualities all said, "See the power of austerity. Even though we are angry, we cannot even look upon the best of sages." (13-53-45)
अहो भगवतो वीर्यं महर्षेर्भावितात्मनः। राज्ञश्चापि सभार्यस्य धैर्यं पश्यत यादृशम् ॥१३-५३-४६॥
aho bhagavato vīryaṃ maharṣerbhāvitātmanaḥ। rājñaścāpi sabhāryasya dhairyaṃ paśyata yādṛśam ॥13-53-46॥
[अहो (aho) - indeed; alas; oh; भगवतः (bhagavataḥ) - of the venerable one; of the fortunate one; वीर्यं (vīryam) - power; energy; might; महर्षेः (maharṣeḥ) - of the great sage; भावितात्मनः (bhāvitātmanaḥ) - whose self is perfected; who is self-disciplined; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - of the king; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; सभार्यस्य (sabhāryasya) - with his wife; (of the one) with wife; धैर्यं (dhairyam) - fortitude; patience; courage; पश्यत (paśyata) - see; behold; यादृशम् (yādṛśam) - of what kind; of such nature;]
(Oh, the power of the venerable great sage, whose self is perfected! And see also the courage of the king with his wife, of such kind.)
Oh, see the power of the revered great sage whose spirit is perfected, and also the incredible fortitude of the king accompanied by his wife! (13-53-46)
श्रान्तावपि हि कृच्छ्रेण रथमेतं समूहतुः। न चैतयोर्विकारं वै ददर्श भृगुनन्दनः ॥१३-५३-४७॥
śrāntāv api hi kṛcchreṇa ratham etaṃ samūhatuḥ। na ca etayoḥ vikāraṃ vai dadarśa bhṛgunandanaḥ॥13-53-47॥
[श्रान्तौ (śrāntau) - weary; अपि (api) - even; हि (hi) - indeed; कृच्छ्रेण (kṛcchreṇa) - with difficulty; रथम् (ratham) - chariot; एतं (etaṃ) - this; समूहतुः (samūhatuḥ) - they both lifted; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; एतयोः (etayoḥ) - of these two; विकारम् (vikāram) - change; वै (vai) - truly; ददर्श (dadarśa) - (he) saw; भृगुनन्दनः (bhṛgunandanaḥ) - the son of Bhr̥gu;]
(Even though weary indeed, with difficulty, these two lifted this chariot; and the son of Bhr̥gu saw truly no change in these two.)
Though both were weary, they nevertheless lifted the chariot with difficulty; but the son of Bhr̥gu saw no change in either of them. (13-53-47)

Bhishma said.
ततः स निर्विकारौ तौ दृष्ट्वा भृगुकुलोद्वहः। वसु विश्राणयामास यथा वैश्रवणस्तथा ॥१३-५३-४८॥
tataḥ sa nirvikārau tau dṛṣṭvā bhṛgukulodvahaḥ। vasu viśrāṇayāmāsa yathā vaiśravaṇaḥ tathā ॥13-53-48॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; स (sa) - he; निर्विकारौ (nirvikārau) - unchanging (dual); तौ (tau) - those two; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; भृगुकुलोद्वहः (bhṛgukulodvahaḥ) - (the) best of the Bhṛgu lineage; वसु (vasu) - wealth; विश्राणयामास (viśrāṇayāmāsa) - caused (to) be distributed; यथा (yathā) - just as; वैश्रवणः (vaiśravaṇaḥ) - Vaiśravaṇa (Kubera); तथा (tathā) - thus;]
(Then he, having seen those two unchanging (persons), the best of the Bhṛgu lineage, caused wealth to be distributed just as Vaiśravaṇa (does) thus.)
Then, seeing those two who remained unchanged, the best of the Bhṛgu lineage distributed wealth just as Vaiśravaṇa does. (13-53-48)
तत्रापि राजा प्रीतात्मा यथाज्ञप्तमथाकरोत्। ततोऽस्य भगवान्प्रीतो बभूव मुनिसत्तमः ॥१३-५३-४९॥
tatrāpi rājā prītātmā yathājñaptam athākarot। tato'sya bhagavān prīto babhūva munisattamaḥ ॥13-53-49॥
[तत्रापि (tatrāpi) - there also; राजा (rājā) - king; प्रीतात्मा (prītātmā) - with pleased mind; यथाज्ञप्तम् (yathājñaptam) - as instructed; अथ (atha) - then; अकरोत् (akarot) - he did; ततः (tataḥ) - then; अस्य (asya) - of him; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the Venerable; प्रीतः (prītaḥ) - pleased; बभूव (babhūva) - became; मुनिसत्तमः (munisattamaḥ) - best among sages;]
(There also the king with pleased mind did as instructed; then the Venerable, the best among sages, of him, pleased, became.)
There also, the king, with a delighted mind, did as he was instructed; then the Venerable best among sages became pleased with him. (13-53-49)
अवतीर्य रथश्रेष्ठाद्दम्पती तौ मुमोच ह। विमोच्य चैतौ विधिवत्ततो वाक्यमुवाच ह ॥१३-५३-५०॥
avatīrya rathaśreṣṭhāddampatī tau mumoca ha। vimocya caitau vidhivat tato vākyam uvāca ha॥13-53-50॥
[अवतीर्य (avatīrya) - having descended; रथश्रेष्ठात् (rathaśreṣṭhāt) - from the excellent chariot; दम्पती (dampatī) - the couple (husband and wife); तौ (tau) - those two; मुमोच (mumoca) - released; ह (ha) - indeed; विमोच्य (vimocya) - having unbound; च (ca) - and; एतौ (etau) - these two; विधिवत् (vidhivat) - properly; ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - speech; उवाच (uvāca) - spoke; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(Having descended from the excellent chariot, he indeed released those two, the couple. And having unbound these two properly, thereafter he spoke speech indeed.)
He got down from the excellent chariot and released the couple. Then, having properly freed them, he spoke to them. (13-53-50)
स्निग्धगम्भीरया वाचा भार्गवः सुप्रसन्नया। ददानि वां वरं श्रेष्ठं तद्ब्रूतामिति भारत ॥१३-५३-५१॥
snigdhagambhīrayā vācā bhārgavaḥ suprasannayā। dadāni vāṃ varaṃ śreṣṭhaṃ tad brūtām iti bhārata॥13-53-51॥
[स्निग्धगम्भीरया (snigdhagambhīrayā) - with gentle and deep; वाचा (vācā) - speech; भार्गवः (bhārgavaḥ) - Bhārgava (the descendant of Bhṛgu); सुप्रसन्नया (suprasannayā) - with very clear; ददानि (dadāni) - I shall give; वां (vāṃ) - to you two; वरं (varaṃ) - boon; श्रेष्ठं (śreṣṭham) - the best; तत् (tad) - that; ब्रूताम् (brūtām) - tell (you two); इति (iti) - thus; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(With gentle and deep speech, Bhārgava—of very clear (mind)—I shall give a best boon to you two; that, speak (you two) thus, O Bhārata.)
Bhārgava, with gentle and deep speech and with a very clear mind, said: "I shall grant you two the best boon; declare what it is," O Bhārata. (13-53-51)
सुकुमारौ च तौ विद्वान्कराभ्यां मुनिसत्तमः। पस्पर्शामृतकल्पाभ्यां स्नेहाद्भरतसत्तम ॥१३-५३-५२॥
sukumārau ca tau vidvān karābhyāṃ munisattamaḥ। pasparśāmṛtakalpābhyāṃ snehād bharatasattama ॥13-53-52॥
[सुकुमारौ (sukumārau) - very tender; delicate; च (ca) - and; तौ (tau) - those two; विद्वान् (vidvān) - the learned one; कराभ्यां (karābhyām) - with (his) two hands; मुनिसत्तमः (munisattamaḥ) - the best sage; पस्पर्श (pasparśa) - touched; अमृतकल्पाभ्यां (amṛtakalpābhyāṃ) - like nectar (his hands); स्नेहात् (snehāt) - out of affection; भरतसत्तम (bharatasattama) - O best of the Bharatas;]
(Very tender and those two the learned sage with (his) two hands the best sage touched with hands like nectar out of affection, O best of the Bharatas.)
The learned sage, O best of the Bharatas, out of affection, touched those two very tender boys with his hands, hands like nectar. (13-53-52)
अथाब्रवीन्नृपो वाक्यं श्रमो नास्त्यावयोरिह। विश्रान्तौ स्वः प्रभावात्ते ध्यानेनैवेति भार्गव ॥१३-५३-५३॥
athābravīn nṛpo vākyaṃ śramo nāsty āvayor iha। viśrāntau svaḥ prabhāvāt te dhyānenaiva iti bhārgava ॥13-53-53॥
[अथ (atha) - then; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - the king; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - a statement; श्रमः (śramaḥ) - fatigue; न (na) - not; अस्ति (asti) - is; आवयोः (āvayoḥ) - for both of us; इह (iha) - here; विश्रान्तौ (viśrāntau) - rested; स्वः (svaḥ) - by your own; प्रभावात् (prabhāvāt) - by power; ते (te) - your; ध्यानेन (dhyānena) - by meditation; एव (eva) - indeed; इति (iti) - thus; भार्गव (bhārgava) - O Bhārgava (descendant of Bhṛgu);]
(Then the king said a statement: fatigue is not for both of us here. Rested by your power, by your meditation indeed, thus, O Bhārgava.)
Then the king said: “There is no fatigue for either of us here. By your own power and your meditation, we are rested, O Bhārgava.” (13-53-53)
अथ तौ भगवान्प्राह प्रहृष्टश्च्यवनस्तदा। न वृथा व्याहृतं पूर्वं यन्मया तद्भविष्यति ॥१३-५३-५४॥
atha tau bhagavān prāha prahṛṣṭaś cyavanaḥ tadā। na vṛthā vyāhṛtaṃ pūrvaṃ yan mayā tad bhaviṣyati॥ 13-53-54॥
[अथ (atha) - then; तौ (tau) - those two; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the revered one; प्राह (prāha) - said; प्रहृष्टः (prahṛṣṭaḥ) - joyful; च्यवनः (cyavanaḥ) - Cyavana; तदा (tadā) - then; न (na) - not; वृथा (vṛthā) - in vain; व्याहृतम् (vyāhṛtam) - uttered; पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - before; यत् (yat) - that which; मया (mayā) - by me; तत् (tat) - that; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be;]
(Then those two the revered one said joyful Cyavana then; not in vain uttered before that which by me that will be.)
Then, the joyful Cyavana, the revered one, said to them: "What was declared by me before will not be in vain; that will certainly come to pass." (13-53-54)
रमणीयः समुद्देशो गङ्गातीरमिदं शुभम्। कञ्चित्कालं व्रतपरो निवत्स्यामीह पार्थिव ॥१३-५३-५५॥
ramaṇīyaḥ samuddeśo gaṅgātīram idaṁ śubham। kañcit kālaṁ vrataparo nivatsyāmi iha pārthiva ॥13-53-55॥
[रमणीयः (ramaṇīyaḥ) - beautiful; pleasant; समुद्देशः (samuddeśaḥ) - region; locality; गङ्गातीरम् (gaṅgātīram) - Ganga bank; bank of the Ganga; इदं (idaṁ) - this; शुभम् (śubham) - auspicious; कञ्चित्कालम् (kañcit kālam) - for a certain time; for some time; व्रतपः (vrataparaḥ) - devoted to vow; observant of vow; निवत्स्यामि (nivatsyāmi) - I shall dwell; I shall stay; इह (iha) - here; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - O king;]
(Beautiful region, this auspicious bank of the Ganga; for some time, devoted to vow, I shall dwell here, O king.)
This auspicious and beautiful region, the bank of the Ganga—here I shall live for some time, devoted to my vow, O king. (13-53-55)
गम्यतां स्वपुरं पुत्र विश्रान्तः पुनरेष्यसि। इहस्थं मां सभार्यस्त्वं द्रष्टासि श्वो नराधिप ॥१३-५३-५६॥
gamyatāṃ svapuraṃ putra viśrāntaḥ punareṣyasi। ihasthaṃ māṃ sabhāryastvaṃ draṣṭāsi śvo narādhipa ॥13-53-56॥
[गम्यतां (gamyatām) - let it be gone; स्वपुरं (svapuram) - own city; पुत्र (putra) - son; विश्रान्तः (viśrāntaḥ) - having rested; पुनरेष्यसि (punareṣyasi) - you will return again; इहस्थं (ihastham) - situated here; मां (mām) - me; सभार्यस्त्वं (sabhāryaḥ tvaṃ) - with your wife, you; द्रष्टासि (draṣṭāsi) - you will see; श्वः (śvaḥ) - tomorrow; नराधिप (narādhipa) - O king;]
(Let it be gone to your own city, son; having rested, you will return again. Me, situated here, with your wife, you will see, tomorrow, O king.)
Go to your own city, son; after resting, you will return again. Tomorrow, with your wife, you will see me here, O king. (13-53-56)
न च मन्युस्त्वया कार्यः श्रेयस्ते समुपस्थितम्। यत्काङ्क्षितं हृदिस्थं ते तत्सर्वं सम्भविष्यति ॥१३-५३-५७॥
na ca manyus tvayā kāryaḥ śreyas te samupasthitam। yat kāṅkṣitam hṛdi-stham te tat sarvaṁ sambhaviṣyati ॥13-53-57॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; मन्युः (manyuḥ) - anger; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; कार्यः (kāryaḥ) - to be done; श्रेयः (śreyas) - auspiciousness; welfare; ते (te) - to you; समुपस्थितम् (samupasthitam) - has arrived; has come; यत् (yat) - that which; काङ्क्षितं (kāṅkṣitam) - desired; हृदिस्थं (hṛdi-stham) - abiding in (your) heart; ते (te) - your; तत् (tat) - that; सर्वं (sarvaṁ) - all; सम्भविष्यति (sambhaviṣyati) - will come into being; will happen;]
(And not anger by you should be done; auspiciousness to you has come. That which is desired, abiding in your heart, all that will come to be.)
Do not allow anger to arise; good fortune has come to you. Whatever you have desired in your heart, all of that will happen. (13-53-57)
इत्येवमुक्तः कुशिकः प्रहृष्टेनान्तरात्मना। प्रोवाच मुनिशार्दूलमिदं वचनमर्थवत् ॥१३-५३-५८॥
ityevam-uktaḥ kuśikaḥ prahṛṣṭenāntarātmanā। provāca muniśārdūlam-idaṃ vacanam-arthavat ॥13-53-58॥
[इति (iti) - thus; एवम् (evam) - in this way; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - having been addressed; कुशिकः (kuśikaḥ) - Kuśika; प्रहृष्टेन (prahṛṣṭena) - delighted; अन्तरात्मना (antarātmanā) - with (his) inner self; प्रोवाच (provāca) - said; मुनिशार्दूलम् (muniśārdūlam) - O tiger among sages; इदं (idaṃ) - this; वचनम् (vacanam) - speech; अर्थवत् (arthavat) - meaningful;]
(Thus, having been addressed in this way, Kuśika, delighted in his inner self, said to the tiger among sages this meaningful speech.)
Having thus been addressed, Kuśika, filled with joy in his heart, spoke these meaningful words to the tiger among sages. (13-53-58)
न मे मन्युर्महाभाग पूतोऽस्मि भगवंस्त्वया। संवृत्तौ यौवनस्थौ स्वो वपुष्मन्तौ बलान्वितौ ॥१३-५३-५९॥
na me manyur mahābhāga pūto'smi bhagavan tvayā। saṃvṛttau yauvanasthau svo vapuṣmantau balānvitau ॥13-53-59॥
[न (na) - not; मे (me) - to me; मन्युः (manyuḥ) - anger; महाभाग (mahābhāga) - O greatly fortunate one; पूतः (pūtaḥ) - purified; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; भगवन् (bhagavan) - O Lord; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; संवृत्तौ (saṃvṛttau) - have become; यौवनस्थौ (yauvanasthau) - abiding in youth; स्वः (svaḥ) - our; वपुष्मन्तौ (vapuṣmantau) - possessed of bodies; बलान्वितौ (balānvitau) - endowed with strength;]
(Not to me anger, O greatly fortunate one, purified I am, O Lord, by you. We have become abiding in youth, our (bodies) possessed of bodies, endowed with strength.)
O greatly fortunate one, I am not angry; I am purified by you, O Lord. We have both become youthful again, possessing our own strong bodies. (13-53-59)
प्रतोदेन व्रणा ये मे सभार्यस्य कृतास्त्वया। तान्न पश्यामि गात्रेषु स्वस्थोऽस्मि सह भार्यया ॥१३-५३-६०॥
pratodena vraṇā ye me sabhāryasya kṛtās tvayā। tān na paśyāmi gātreṣu svastho'smi saha bhāryayā ॥13-53-60॥
[प्रतोदेन (pratodena) - with the goad; व्रणा (vraṇā) - wounds; ये (ye) - which; मे (me) - to me; सभार्यस्य (sabhāryasya) - of (me) together with wife; कृताः (kṛtāḥ) - made; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; तान् (tān) - those; न (na) - not; पश्यामि (paśyāmi) - I see; गात्रेषु (gātreṣu) - on (my) limbs; स्वस्थः (svasthaḥ) - healthy; अस्मि (asmi) - am; सह (saha) - together; भार्यया (bhāryayā) - with (my) wife;]
(With the goad, wounds which to me with wife were made by you, those I do not see on (my) limbs; healthy I am together with (my) wife.)
The wounds inflicted on me and my wife by your goad—I do not see those on our bodies; together with my wife, I am healthy. (13-53-60)
इमां च देवीं पश्यामि मुने दिव्याप्सरोपमाम्। श्रिया परमया युक्तां यथादृष्टां मया पुरा ॥१३-५३-६१॥
imāṃ ca devīṃ paśyāmi mune divyāpsaropamām। śriyā paramayā yuktāṃ yathādṛṣṭāṃ mayā purā॥13-53-61॥

(This and the goddess I see, O sage, having the appearance of a divine apsaras, endowed with supreme splendor, just as seen by me formerly.)

तव प्रसादात्संवृत्तमिदं सर्वं महामुने। नैतच्चित्रं तु भगवंस्त्वयि सत्यपराक्रम ॥१३-५३-६२॥
tava prasādāt saṁvṛttam idaṁ sarvaṁ mahāmune। na etac citraṁ tu bhagavan tvayi satya-parākrama ॥13-53-62॥
[तव (tava) - of you; प्रसादात् (prasādāt) - by (your) favor; संवृत्तम् (saṁvṛttam) - has become; has come to be; इदं (idaṁ) - this; सर्वं (sarvaṁ) - all; महामुने (mahāmune) - O great sage; न (na) - not; एतत् (etat) - this; चित्रं (citraṁ) - wonder; strange; तु (tu) - but; भगवन् (bhagavan) - O venerable one; त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; towards you; सत्यपराक्रम (satya-parākrama) - of true valor;]
(By your favor, all this has come to be, O great sage. This is not a wonder, O venerable one, in you of true valor.)
All this has come into being through your favor, O great sage. It is not surprising, O venerable one of true valor, (that this has occurred) in you. (13-53-62)
इत्युक्तः प्रत्युवाचेदं च्यवनः कुशिकं तदा। आगच्छेथाः सभार्यश्च त्वमिहेति नराधिप ॥१३-५३-६३॥
ity uktaḥ pratyuvācedaṃ cyavanaḥ kuśikaṃ tadā। āgacchethāḥ sabhāryaś ca tvam iheti narādhipa ॥13-53-63॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - having been addressed; प्रत्युवाच (pratyuvāca) - replied; इदं (idaṃ) - this; च्यवनः (cyavanaḥ) - Cyavana; कुशिकं (kuśikaṃ) - Kushika; तदा (tadā) - then; आगच्छेथाः (āgacchethāḥ) - you may come; सभार्यः (sabhāryaḥ) - with wife; च (ca) - and; त्वम् (tvam) - you; इह (iha) - here; इति (iti) - so (saying); नराधिप (narādhipa) - O king;]
(Thus, having been addressed, Cyavana then replied this to Kushika: "You may come with your wife here," O king.)

इत्युक्तः समनुज्ञातो राजर्षिरभिवाद्य तम्। प्रययौ वपुषा युक्तो नगरं देवराजवत् ॥१३-५३-६४॥
ity uktaḥ samanugñāto rājarṣir abhivādya tam। prayayau vapuṣā yukto nagaraṃ devarājavat॥13-53-64॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - having been spoken; समनुज्ञातः (samanugñātaḥ) - having been fully permitted; राजर्षिः (rājarṣiḥ) - king-sage; अभिवाद्य (abhivādya) - having saluted; तम् (tam) - him; प्रययौ (prayayau) - he went; वपुषा (vapuṣā) - with splendor; युक्तः (yuktaḥ) - endowed; नगरम् (nagaraṃ) - city; देवराजवत् (devarājavat) - like the king of the gods;]
(Thus having been spoken to, having been fully permitted, the king-sage, having saluted him, he went, endowed with splendor, to the city like the king of the gods.)
Having been told thus and fully permitted, the royal sage saluted him and went to the city, resplendent like the king of the gods. (13-53-64)
तत एनमुपाजग्मुरमात्याः सपुरोहिताः। बलस्था गणिकायुक्ताः सर्वाः प्रकृतयस्तथा ॥१३-५३-६५॥
tat enam upājagmur amātyāḥ sa-purohitāḥ। balasthā gaṇikā-yuktāḥ sarvāḥ prakṛtayas tathā ॥13-53-65॥
[तत (tat) - then; एनम् (enam) - him; उपाजग्मुः (upājagmuḥ) - approached; अमात्याः (amātyāḥ) - ministers; स (sa) - with; पुरोहिताः (purohitāḥ) - priests; बलस्था (balasthā) - army commanders; गणिकायुक्ताः (gaṇikāyuktāḥ) - officers in charge of courtesans; सर्वाः (sarvāḥ) - all; प्रकृतयः (prakṛtayaḥ) - officials; तथा (tathā) - also;]
(Then him approached ministers with priests, army commanders, officers in charge of courtesans, all officials also.)
Then the ministers, together with the priests, the army commanders, the officers overseeing the courtesans, and all the officials also, approached him. (13-53-65)
तैर्वृतः कुशिको राजा श्रिया परमया ज्वलन्। प्रविवेश पुरं हृष्टः पूज्यमानोऽथ बन्दिभिः ॥१३-५३-६६॥
tair vṛtaḥ kuśiko rājā śriyā paramayā jvalan। praviveśa puraṃ hṛṣṭaḥ pūjyamānaḥ atha bandibhiḥ॥13-53-66॥
[तैः (taiḥ) - by them; वृतः (vṛtaḥ) - surrounded; कुशिकः (kuśikaḥ) - Kuśika; राजा (rājā) - king; श्रिया (śriyā) - by splendor; परमया (paramayā) - by supreme; ज्वलन् (jvalan) - shining; प्रविवेश (praviveśa) - entered; पुरम् (puram) - city; हृष्टः (hṛṣṭaḥ) - joyful; पूज्यमानः (pūjyamānaḥ) - being honored; अथ (atha) - then; बन्दिभिः (bandibhiḥ) - by bards;]
(By them surrounded Kuśika king by splendor supreme shining entered city joyful being honored then by bards.)
Surrounded by them, King Kuśika, shining with supreme splendor, joyfully entered the city, being honored then by the bards. (13-53-66)
ततः प्रविश्य नगरं कृत्वा सर्वाह्णिकक्रियाः। भुक्त्वा सभार्यो रजनीमुवास स महीपतिः ॥१३-५३-६७॥
tataḥ praviśya nagaraṃ kṛtvā sarvāhṇikakriyāḥ। bhuktvā sabhāryo rajanīmuvāsa sa mahīpatiḥ॥13-53-67॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्रविश्य (praviśya) - having entered; नगरं (nagaraṃ) - the city; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; सर्वाह्णिकक्रियाः (sarvāhṇikakriyāḥ) - all daily rites; भुक्त्वा (bhuktvā) - having eaten; सभार्यः (sabhāryaḥ) - with (his) wife; रजनीम् (rajanīm) - the night; उवास (uvāsa) - he spent; स (sa) - that; महीपतिः (mahīpatiḥ) - king;]
(Then, having entered the city, having performed all daily rites, having eaten, with (his) wife the king spent the night.)
Then, the king entered the city, performed all his daily duties, ate his meal, and spent the night with his wife. (13-53-67)
ततस्तु तौ नवमभिवीक्ष्य यौवनं; परस्परं विगतजराविवामरौ। ननन्दतुः शयनगतौ वपुर्धरौ; श्रिया युतौ द्विजवरदत्तया तया ॥१३-५३-६८॥
tatastu tau navam abhivīkṣya yauvanam; parasparaṃ vigata-jarāv ivāmarau. nanandatuḥ śayanagatau vapur-dharau; śriyā yutau dvija-vara-dattayā tayā ॥13-53-68॥

(Then but those two, having looked upon new youth, each other (as if) immortals freed from old age, they rejoiced, lying on the bed, bearing bodies, endowed with splendor given by her who was given by the excellent Brāhmaṇa.)
Then those two, beholding their renewed youth, like immortals free from old age, rejoiced together as they lay on the bed, bearing forms endowed with splendor by her, who had been given by the excellent Brāhmaṇa. (13-53-68)
स चाप्यृषिर्भृगुकुलकीर्तिवर्धन; स्तपोधनो वनमभिराममृद्धिमत्। मनीषया बहुविधरत्नभूषितं; ससर्ज यन्नास्ति शतक्रतोरपि ॥१३-५३-६९॥
sa cāpy ṛṣiḥ bhṛgukula-kīrti-vardhanaḥ; tapaḥ-dhanaḥ vanam abhirāmam ṛddhimat. manīṣayā bahu-vidha-ratna-bhūṣitam; sasarja yat na asti śatakrator api ॥13-53-69॥
[स (sa) - he; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - indeed; ऋषिः (ṛṣiḥ) - sage; भृगुकुलकीर्तिवर्धन (bhṛgukula-kīrti-vardhanaḥ) - one who increases the fame of the Bhṛgu lineage; तपोधनः (tapaḥ-dhanaḥ) - one whose wealth is austerity; वनम् (vanam) - forest; अभिरामम् (abhirāmam) - pleasing; ऋद्धिमत् (ṛddhimat) - prosperous; मनीषया (manīṣayā) - by wisdom; बहुविधरत्नभूषितम् (bahu-vidha-ratna-bhūṣitam) - adorned with many kinds of gems; ससर्ज (sasarja) - he created; यत् (yat) - which; न (na) - not; अस्ति (asti) - is; शतक्रतोरपि (śatakrator api) - even for Śatakratu (Indra);]
(He and indeed the sage, the increaser of the Bhṛgu lineage's fame, whose wealth is austerity, (made) the pleasing, prosperous forest. By wisdom, adorned with many kinds of gems, he created that which is not for even Śatakratu (Indra).)
And that sage, who increased the fame of the Bhṛgu lineage and whose wealth was his austerity, created by his wisdom a beautiful and prosperous forest adorned with many kinds of gems—something not possessed even by Indra (Śatakratu). (13-53-69)
