Vasiṣṭha said.
घृतक्षीरप्रदा गावो घृतयोन्यो घृतोद्भवाः। घृतनद्यो घृतावर्तास्ता मे सन्तु सदा गृहे ॥१३-७९-१॥
ghṛtakṣīrapradā gāvo ghṛtayonyo ghṛtodbhavāḥ। ghṛtanadyo ghṛtāvartāstā me santu sadā gṛhe ॥13-79-1॥
[घृतक्षीरप्रदा (ghṛtakṣīrapradā) - those who give ghee and milk; गावः (gāvaḥ) - cows; घृतयोन्यः (ghṛtayonyaḥ) - whose origin is ghee; घृतोद्भवाः (ghṛtodbhavāḥ) - born of ghee; घृतनद्यः (ghṛtanadyaḥ) - having rivers of ghee; घृतावर्ताः (ghṛtāvartāḥ) - with whirls/eddies of ghee; ता (tā) - they; मे (me) - to me; सन्तु (santu) - may there be; सदा (sadā) - always; गृहे (gṛhe) - in the house;]
(Those who give ghee and milk, cows whose origin is ghee, born of ghee, having rivers of ghee, with whirls of ghee, they to me may there be always in the house.)
May cows that give ghee and milk, whose origin and birth are from ghee, that have rivers and eddies of ghee, always be present in my house. (13-79-1)
घृतं मे हृदये नित्यं घृतं नाभ्यां प्रतिष्ठितम्। घृतं सर्वेषु गात्रेषु घृतं मे मनसि स्थितम् ॥१३-७९-२॥
ghṛtaṃ me hṛdaye nityaṃ ghṛtaṃ nābhyāṃ pratiṣṭhitam। ghṛtaṃ sarveṣu gātreṣu ghṛtaṃ me manasi sthitam ॥13-79-2॥
[घृतं (ghṛtam) - clarified butter; मे (me) - for me; हृदये (hṛdaye) - in (the) heart; नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; घृतं (ghṛtam) - clarified butter; नाभ्यां (nābhyāṃ) - in the navel; प्रतिष्ठितम् (pratiṣṭhitam) - settled; घृतं (ghṛtam) - clarified butter; सर्वेषु (sarveṣu) - in all; गात्रेषु (gātreṣu) - in (the) limbs; घृतं (ghṛtam) - clarified butter; मे (me) - for me; मनसि (manasi) - in (the) mind; स्थितम् (sthitam) - abiding;]
(Clarified butter for me in the heart always, clarified butter in the navel is settled. Clarified butter in all the limbs, clarified butter for me in the mind is abiding. (13-79-2))
Clarified butter is always in my heart, clarified butter is established in my navel. Clarified butter is in all my limbs, clarified butter abides in my mind. (13-79-2)
गावो ममाग्रतो नित्यं गावः पृष्ठत एव च। गावो मे सर्वतश्चैव गवां मध्ये वसाम्यहम् ॥१३-७९-३॥
gāvaḥ mamāgrato nityaṁ gāvaḥ pṛṣṭhata eva ca। gāvaḥ me sarvataścaiva gavāṁ madhye vasāmyaham ॥13-79-3॥
[गावः (gāvaḥ) - cows; मम (mama) - my; अग्रतः (agrataḥ) - in front; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; गावः (gāvaḥ) - cows; पृष्ठतः (pṛṣṭhataḥ) - behind; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and; गावः (gāvaḥ) - cows; मे (me) - to me; सर्वतः (sarvataḥ) - on all sides; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; गवाम् (gavām) - of cows; मध्ये (madhye) - in the midst; वसामि (vasāmi) - I dwell; अहम् (aham) - I;]
(Cows always (are) in front of me, cows indeed also (are) behind. Cows are on all sides indeed for me; in the midst of cows I dwell, I.)
Cows are always in front of me, cows are indeed behind as well. Cows are all around me, and I dwell in the midst of cows. (13-79-3)
इत्याचम्य जपेत्सायं प्रातश्च पुरुषः सदा। यदह्ना कुरुते पापं तस्मात्स परिमुच्यते ॥१३-७९-४॥
ityācamya japetsāyaṁ prātaśca puruṣaḥ sadā। yadahnā kurute pāpaṁ tasmātsa parimucyate ॥13-79-4॥
[इति (iti) - thus; आचम्य (ācamya) - having sipped (water ritualistically); जपेत् (japet) - should recite; सायं (sāyaṁ) - in the evening; प्रातः (prātaḥ) - in the morning; च (ca) - and; पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - man; सदा (sadā) - always; यदह्ना (yadahnā) - what by the day; कुरुते (kurute) - does; पापं (pāpaṁ) - sin; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - from that; सः (saḥ) - he; परिमुच्यते (parimucyate) - is completely freed;]
(Thus, having sipped (water), one should recite always in the evening and in the morning; what sin he does by the day, from that he is completely freed.)
Thus, after performing the ritual sipping, a man should always recite in the evening and the morning; from whatever sin he commits during the day, he is thereby fully freed. (13-79-4)
प्रासादा यत्र सौवर्णा वसोर्धारा च यत्र सा। गन्धर्वाप्सरसो यत्र तत्र यान्ति सहस्रदाः ॥१३-७९-५॥
prāsādā yatra sauvarṇā vasordhārā ca yatra sā। gandharvāpsaraso yatra tatra yānti sahasradāḥ ॥13-79-5॥
[प्रासादा (prāsādā) - palaces; यत्र (yatra) - where; सौवर्णा (sauvarṇā) - golden; वसोर्धारा (vasordhārā) - streams of riches; च (ca) - and; यत्र (yatra) - where; सा (sā) - she; गन्धर्वाप्सरसो (gandharvāpsaraso) - Gandharvas and Apsarases; यत्र (yatra) - where; तत्र (tatra) - there; यान्ति (yānti) - go; सहस्रदाः (sahasradāḥ) - in thousands;]
(Palaces where golden streams of riches are, and where she is; Gandharvas and Apsarases, where (it is), there go in thousands.)
Where there are palaces, where are golden streams of treasure and where she is, there Gandharvas and Apsarases go in thousands. (13-79-5)
नवनीतपङ्काः क्षीरोदा दधिशैवलसङ्कुलाः। वहन्ति यत्र नद्यो वै तत्र यान्ति सहस्रदाः ॥१३-७९-६॥
navanīta-paṅkāḥ kṣīroda dadhi-śaivala-saṅkulāḥ। vahanti yatra nadyo vai tatra yānti sahasradāḥ॥13-79-6॥
[नवनीतपङ्काः (navanīta-paṅkāḥ) - butter-mud; (made) of lumps of freshly churned butter; क्षीरोदा (kṣīroda) - milk-rivers; (rivers) consisting of milk; दधिशैवलसङ्कुलाः (dadhi-śaivala-saṅkulāḥ) - congested with curd-moss; thickly filled with green scum of curds; वहन्ति (vahanti) - flow; carry; यत्र (yatra) - where; नद्यः (nadyaḥ) - rivers; वै (vai) - indeed; truly; तत्र (tatra) - there; यान्ति (yānti) - go; proceed; सहस्रदाः (sahasradāḥ) - in thousands (ways); in thousands of streams;]
(Butter-mud, milk-rivers congested with curd-moss flow; where rivers indeed, there proceed in thousands (ways). (13-79-6))
Where rivers of milk burdened with heaps of butter and thick with curd-moss flow, there they proceed in a thousand streams. (13-79-6)
गवां शतसहस्रं तु यः प्रयच्छेद्यथाविधि। परामृद्धिमवाप्याथ स गोलोके महीयते ॥१३-७९-७॥
gavāṃ śatasahasraṃ tu yaḥ prayacched yathāvidhi। parām ṛddhim avāpya atha sa goloke mahīyate ॥13-79-7॥
[गवां (gavāṃ) - of cows; शतसहस्रं (śatasahasram) - one hundred thousand; तु (tu) - but; यः (yaḥ) - who; प्रयच्छेत् (prayacchet) - would give (offers); यथाविधि (yathāvidhi) - according to proper method; पराम् (parām) - supreme; ऋद्धिम् (ṛddhim) - prosperity; अवाप्य (avāpya) - having attained; अथ (atha) - then; स (sa) - he; गोलोके (goloke) - in Goloka; महीयते (mahīyate) - is honored;]
(Of cows one hundred thousand but who would give according to proper method, supreme prosperity having attained, then he in Goloka is honored.)
Whoever gives one hundred thousand cows according to the proper method, after attaining the highest prosperity, is then honored in Goloka. (13-79-7)
दश चोभयतः प्रेत्य मातापित्रोः पितामहान्। दधाति सुकृताँल्लोकान्पुनाति च कुलं नरः ॥१३-७९-८॥
daśa cobhayataḥ pretya mātāpitrōḥ pitāmahān। dadhāti sukṛtāṃllōkānpunāti ca kulaṃ naraḥ ॥13-79-8॥
[दश (daśa) - ten; च (ca) - and; उभयतः (ubhayataḥ) - on both sides; प्रेत्य (pretya) - having departed; after death; मातापित्रोः (mātāpitrōḥ) - of mother and father; पितामहान् (pitāmahān) - grandfathers; दधाति (dadhāti) - attains; places; सुकृतान् (sukṛtān) - virtuous (people); those of good merit; लोकान् (lōkān) - worlds; पुनाति (punāti) - purifies; च (ca) - and; कुलम् (kulam) - family; नरः (naraḥ) - man; person;]
(Ten on both sides—after death, of mother and father, (and) grandfathers—a man attains virtuous worlds and purifies also (his) family.)
A man attains the virtuous worlds of ten ancestors on both sides (of mother and father) after death and also purifies his family. (13-79-8)
धेन्वाः प्रमाणेन समप्रमाणां; धेनुं तिलानामपि च प्रदाय। पानीयदाता च यमस्य लोके; न यातनां काञ्चिदुपैति तत्र ॥१३-७९-९॥
dhenvāḥ pramāṇena samapramāṇāṃ; dhenuṃ tilānām api ca pradāya. pānīyadātā ca yamasya loke; na yātanāṃ kāñcid upaiti tatra ॥13-79-9॥
[धेन्वाः (dhenvāḥ) - of cows; प्रमाणेन (pramāṇena) - with measure; समप्रमाणां (samapramāṇāṃ) - equal in measure; धेनुं (dhenuṃ) - cow; तिलानाम् (tilānām) - of sesame seeds; अपि (api) - even; च (ca) - and; प्रदाय (pradāya) - having given; पानीयदाता (pānīyadātā) - giver of water; च (ca) - and; यमस्य (yamasya) - of Yama; लोके (loke) - in the world; न (na) - not; यातनाम् (yātanām) - torment; काञ्चित् (kāñcid) - any; उपैति (upaiti) - attains; तत्र (tatra) - there;]
(Of cows with measured equal measure; even having given a cow (formed) of sesame seeds; and the giver of water, too, in the world of Yama, does not attain any torment there.)
One who, according to proper measure, gives a cow, even one made of sesame seeds, and who gives water, does not experience any suffering in the world of Yama. (13-79-9)
पवित्रमग्र्यं जगतः प्रतिष्ठा; दिवौकसां मातरोऽथाप्रमेयाः। अन्वालभेद्दक्षिणतो व्रजेच्च; दद्याच्च पात्रे प्रसमीक्ष्य कालम् ॥१३-७९-१०॥
pavitram agryaṁ jagataḥ pratiṣṭhā; divaukasāṁ mātaro 'thāprameyāḥ. anvālabhed dakṣiṇato vrajec ca; dadyāc ca pātre prasamīkṣya kālam ॥13-79-10॥
[पवित्रम् (pavitram) - pure; sacred; अग्र्यम् (agryam) - excellent; foremost; जगतः (jagataḥ) - of the world; प्रतिष्ठा (pratiṣṭhā) - foundation; support; दिवौकसाम् (divaukasām) - of the dwellers in heaven; of the gods; मातरः (mātaraḥ) - mothers; अथ (atha) - and; then; अप्रमेयाः (aprameyāḥ) - immeasurable; beyond measure; अनु (anu) - along; after; आलभेत् (ālabhet) - should take (food); दक्षिणतः (dakṣiṇataḥ) - to the south; व्रजेत् (vrajet) - should go; च (ca) - and; दद्यात् (dadyāt) - should give; च (ca) - and; पात्रे (pātre) - to the worthy (recipient); प्रसमीक्ष्य (prasamīkṣya) - having carefully considered; after examining; कालम् (kālam) - time;]
(Pure, excellent, the foundation of the world; mothers of the dwellers in heaven and immeasurable. Along, should take (food) to the south, and should go; and should give to the worthy (recipient) after carefully considering the time.)
The pure and excellent is the foundation of the world; they are the mothers of the gods and are immeasurable. One should take food while facing south, should proceed, and should give to the worthy recipient after carefully considering the proper time. (13-79-10)
धेनुं सवत्सां कपिलां भूरिशृङ्गां; कांस्योपदोहां वसनोत्तरीयाम्। प्रदाय तां गाहति दुर्विगाह्यां; याम्यां सभां वीतभयो मनुष्यः ॥१३-७९-११॥
dhenuṁ savatsāṁ kapilāṁ bhūriśṛṅgāṁ; kāṁsyopadohāṁ vasanottarīyām. pradāya tāṁ gāhati durvigāhyāṁ; yāmyāṁ sabhāṁ vītabhayo manuṣyaḥ ॥13-79-11॥
[धेनुं (dhenuṁ) - cow; female; semicolon; सवत्सां (savatsāṁ) - with calf; semicolon; कपिलां (kapilāṁ) - tawny-colored; semicolon; भूरिशृङ्गां (bhūriśṛṅgāṁ) - with great horns; semicolon; कांस्योपदोहां (kāṁsyopadohāṁ) - with bronze-milking vessel; semicolon; वसनोत्तरीयाम् (vasanottarīyām) - with upper garment; semicolon; प्रदाय (pradāya) - having given; semicolon; तां (tāṁ) - her; semicolon; गाहति (gāhati) - enters; semicolon; दुर्विगाह्यां (durvigāhyāṁ) - difficult to enter; semicolon; याम्यां (yāmyāṁ) - southern; semicolon; सभां (sabhāṁ) - assembly; semicolon; वीतभयः (vītabhayaḥ) - fearless; semicolon; मनुष्यः (manuṣyaḥ) - man; semicolon;]
(A cow with calf, tawny-colored, with great horns; with bronze milking vessel, with upper garment. Having given her, he enters the difficult to enter, southern assembly, fearless, the man.)
Having given a cow with a calf, tawny-colored, with great horns, equipped with a bronze milking vessel and an upper garment, a man enters the difficult-to-enter southern assembly without fear. (13-79-11)
सुरूपा बहुरूपाश्च विश्वरूपाश्च मातरः। गावो मामुपतिष्ठन्तामिति नित्यं प्रकीर्तयेत् ॥१३-७९-१२॥
surūpā bahurūpāś ca viśvarūpāś ca mātaraḥ। gāvo mām upatiṣṭhantām iti nityaṃ prakīrtayet ॥13-79-12॥
[सुरूपाः (surūpāḥ) - having beautiful forms; बहुरूपाः (bahurūpāḥ) - having manifold forms; च (ca) - and; विश्वरूपाः (viśvarūpāḥ) - having universal forms; च (ca) - and; मातरः (mātaraḥ) - mothers; गावः (gāvaḥ) - cows; माम् (mām) - me; उपतिष्ठन्ताम् (upatiṣṭhantām) - may attend upon; इति (iti) - thus; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; प्रकीर्तयेत् (prakīrtayet) - should pronounce;]
(Having beautiful forms, having manifold forms, and having universal forms, mothers, cows, me, may attend upon, thus, always, should pronounce.)
One should always recite: "May the cows, who are mothers, possessing beautiful, manifold, and universal forms, attend upon me." (13-79-12)
नातः पुण्यतरं दानं नातः पुण्यतरं फलम्। नातो विशिष्टं लोकेषु भूतं भवितुमर्हति ॥१३-७९-१३॥
nātaḥ puṇyataram dānaṁ nātaḥ puṇyataram phalam। nāto viśiṣṭaṁ lokeṣu bhūtaṁ bhavitum arhati॥13-79-13॥
[नातः (nātaḥ) - than this; पुण्यतरं (puṇyataram) - more meritorious; दानं (dānam) - gift; नातः (nātaḥ) - than this; पुण्यतरं (puṇyataram) - more meritorious; फलम् (phalam) - fruit; नातः (nātaḥ) - than this; विशिष्टं (viśiṣṭam) - more distinguished; लोकेषु (lokeṣu) - among worlds; भूतं (bhūtam) - existing; भवितुम् (bhavitum) - to become; अर्हति (arhati) - is worthy;]
(Than this, more meritorious gift, than this, more meritorious fruit, than this, more distinguished among worlds, something existing to become is worthy.)
There is no gift more meritorious than this, no fruit more auspicious than this; nothing more distinguished exists or can exist among the worlds. (13-79-13)
त्वचा लोम्नाथ शृङ्गैश्च वालैः क्षीरेण मेदसा। यज्ञं वहन्ति सम्भूय किमस्त्यभ्यधिकं ततः ॥१३-७९-१४॥
tvacā lomnātha śṛṅgaiś ca vālaiḥ kṣīreṇa medasā। yajñaṃ vahanti sambhūya kim asti abhyadhikaṃ tataḥ ॥13-79-14॥
[त्वचा (tvacā) - by skin; लोम्ना (lomnā) - by hair; अथ (atha) - then; शृङ्गैः (śṛṅgaiḥ) - by horns; च (ca) - and; वालैः (vālaiḥ) - by tails; क्षीरेण (kṣīreṇa) - by milk; मेदसा (medasā) - by fat; यज्ञम् (yajñam) - sacrifice; वहन्ति (vahanti) - they bear; सम्भूय (sambhūya) - having come together; किम् (kim) - what; अस्ति (asti) - is; अभ्यधिकम् (abhyadhikam) - superior; ततः (tataḥ) - than that;]
(By skin, by hair, then by horns and by tails, by milk, by fat, they bear the sacrifice having come together; what is superior than that?)
With their skin, hair, horns, tails, milk, and fat, they together bear the sacrifice; is there anything superior to that? (13-79-14)
यया सर्वमिदं व्याप्तं जगत्स्थावरजङ्गमम्। तां धेनुं शिरसा वन्दे भूतभव्यस्य मातरम् ॥१३-७९-१५॥
yayā sarvam idaṁ vyāptaṁ jagat-sthāvara-jaṅgamam। tāṁ dhenuṁ śirasā vande bhūta-bhavvasya mātaram ॥13-79-15॥
[यया (yayā) - by whom; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; इदं (idaṁ) - this; व्याप्तं (vyāptam) - pervaded; जगत् (jagat) - the world; स्थावर (sthāvara) - stationary; जङ्गमम् (jaṅgamam) - moving; तां (tāṁ) - that (feminine); धेनुं (dhenuṁ) - cow; शिरसा (śirasā) - with (my) head; वन्दे (vande) - I bow; भूतभव्यस्य (bhūta-bhavvasya) - of the past and future; मातरम् (mātaram) - mother;]
(By whom all this is pervaded, the world, stationary and moving; that cow, with (my) head, I bow, of past and future the mother.)
I bow my head to that cow by whom all this world, both stationary and moving, is pervaded, the mother of past and future. (13-79-15)
गुणवचनसमुच्चयैकदेशो; नृवर मयैष गवां प्रकीर्तितस्ते। न हि परमिह दानमस्ति गोभ्यो; भवन्ति न चापि परायणं तथान्यत् ॥१३-७९-१६॥
guṇavacanasamuccayaikadeśo; nṛvara maya eṣa gavāṃ prakīrtitas te. na hi param iha dānam asti gobhyo; bhavanti na cāpi parāyaṇaṃ tathānyat ॥13-79-16॥
[गुणवचनसमुच्चय (guṇavacanasamuccaya) - aggregate of attributes and praises; एकदेशो (ekadeśaḥ) - a single part; नृवर (nṛvara) - O best of men; मया (mayā) - by me; एष (eṣaḥ) - this; गवां (gavām) - of cows; प्रकीर्तित (prakīrtitaḥ) - has been declared; स्ते (te) - to you; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; परम् (param) - higher; इह (iha) - here; दानम् (dānam) - gift; अस्ति (asti) - exists; गोभ्यः (gobhyaḥ) - than cows; भवन्ति (bhavanti) - are; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; परायणम् (parāyaṇam) - supreme refuge; तथा (tathā) - likewise; अन्यत् (anyat) - another;]
(Aggregate of attributes and praises—a single part; O best of men, by me this of cows has been declared to you. Not indeed higher here gift exists than cows; are not also supreme refuge likewise another.)
O best of men, I have declared to you only a part of the aggregate of attributes and praises of cows. Indeed, there is no greater gift here than that of cows, nor is there another supreme refuge like them. (13-79-16)
भीष्म उवाच॥
bhīṣma uvāca॥

Bhishma said.
परमिदमिति भूमिपो विचिन्त्य; प्रवरमृषेर्वचनं ततो महात्मा। व्यसृजत नियतात्मवान्द्विजेभ्यः; सुबहु च गोधनमाप्तवांश्च लोकान् ॥१३-७९-१७॥
param idam iti bhūmipo vicintya; pravara-mṛṣer vacanaṁ tato mahātmā। vyasṛjata niyatātmavān dvijebhyaḥ; subahu ca godhanam āptavāṁś ca lokān ॥13-79-17॥
[परम् (param) - highest; supreme; इदम् (idam) - this; इति (iti) - thus; so saying; भूमिपः (bhūmipaḥ) - king; lord of the earth; विचिन्त्य (vicintya) - having considered; प्रवरमृषेः (pravara-mṛṣeḥ) - of the eminent sage; वचनम् (vacanam) - word; instruction; ततः (tataḥ) - then; thereafter; महात्मा (mahātmā) - the great-souled; noble one; व्यसृजत् (vyasṛjat) - gave; distributed; नियतात्मवान् (niyatātmavān) - self-controlled; disciplined; द्विजेभ्यः (dvijebhyaḥ) - to the twice-born (Brāhmaṇas); सुबहु (subahu) - much; numerous; च (ca) - and; गोधनम् (godhanam) - wealth of cows; आप्तवान् (āptavān) - had acquired; had obtained; च (ca) - and; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; realms;]
(Having considered this as the highest, the king thus, the great-souled, then, the word of the eminent sage, self-controlled, distributed to the twice-born; and much wealth of cows and worlds which he had obtained.)
The king, having considered this as supreme, thus (in mind), the great-souled one then distributed, in accordance with the eminent sage's instruction, to the Brāhmaṇas; he (who was) self-controlled gave away much wealth of cows and also the realms he had acquired. (13-79-17)
