Vasiṣṭha said.
शतं वर्षसहस्राणां तपस्तप्तं सुदुश्चरम्। गोभिः पूर्वविसृष्टाभिर्गच्छेम श्रेष्ठतामिति ॥१३-७८-१॥
śataṃ varṣasahasrāṇāṃ tapas taptaṃ suduścaram। gobhiḥ pūrvavisṛṣṭābhir gacchema śreṣṭhatāmiti ॥13-78-1॥
[शतं (śataṃ) - a hundred; वर्षसहस्राणां (varṣasahasrāṇām) - of thousand years; तपः (tapas) - austerity; तप्तं (taptaṃ) - performed; सुदुश्चरम् (suduścaram) - very difficult to practice; गोभिः (gobhiḥ) - by cows; पूर्वविसृष्टाभिः (pūrvavisṛṣṭābhiḥ) - formerly released; गच्छेम (gacchema) - may we attain; श्रेष्ठताम् (śreṣṭhatām) - excellence; इति (iti) - thus;]
(Austerity, a hundred (years) of thousand years, performed, very difficult to practice. By cows formerly released, may we attain excellence thus. (13-78-1))
We have performed austerities for a hundred thousand years, which were very difficult to practice. With the cows previously released, may we thus attain excellence. (13-78-1)
लोकेऽस्मिन्दक्षिणानां च सर्वासां वयमुत्तमाः। भवेम न च लिप्येम दोषेणेति परन्तप ॥१३-७८-२॥
loke'smin dakṣiṇānāṃ ca sarvāsāṃ vayam uttamāḥ। bhavema na ca lipyema doṣeṇeti parantapa ॥13-78-2॥
[लोके (loke) - in the world; अस्मिन् (asmin) - in this; दक्षिणानां (dakṣiṇānāṃ) - of the southern (peoples); च (ca) - and; सर्वासां (sarvāsāṃ) - of all; वयम् (vayam) - we; उत्तमाः (uttamāḥ) - the best; भवेम (bhavema) - may become; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; लिप्येम (lipyema) - may be stained (affected); दोषेण (doṣeṇa) - by fault; इति (iti) - thus; परन्तप (parantapa) - O scorcher of foes;]
(In this world, of the southern peoples and of all, we the best may become, and not may be stained by fault — thus, O scorcher of foes.)
In this world, O scorcher of foes, may we become the best among all the southern peoples and not be stained by fault. (13-78-2)
स एव चेतसा तेन हतो लिप्येत सर्वदा। शकृता च पवित्रार्थं कुर्वीरन्देवमानुषाः ॥१३-७८-३॥
sa eva cetasā tena hato lipyeta sarvadā। śakṛtā ca pavitrārthaṃ kurvīran devamānuṣāḥ॥13-78-3॥
[स (sa) - he; एव (eva) - indeed; चेतसा (cetasā) - by the mind; तेन (tena) - by that; हतः (hataḥ) - struck; destroyed; लिप्येत (lipyeta) - would be tainted; would be smeared; सर्वदा (sarvadā) - always; शकृता (śakṛtā) - with excrement; च (ca) - and; पवित्रार्थम् (pavitrārtham) - for the sake of purification; कुर्वीरन् (kurvīran) - should perform; should do; देवमानुषाः (devamānuṣāḥ) - gods and men;]
(He indeed by the mind, by that struck, would be tainted always. With excrement and for the sake of purification, gods and men should perform.)
He alone, if struck by the mind in such a way, would always be tainted. Gods and men should, using excrement, perform purification. (13-78-3)
तथा सर्वाणि भूतानि स्थावराणि चराणि च। प्रदातारश्च गोलोकान्गच्छेयुरिति मानद ॥१३-७८-४॥
tathā sarvāṇi bhūtāni sthāvarāṇi carāṇi ca। pradātāraś ca golokān gaccheyur iti mānada ॥13-78-4॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; सर्वाणि (sarvāṇi) - all; भूतानि (bhūtāni) - beings; स्थावराणि (sthāvarāṇi) - immobile; चराणि (carāṇi) - mobile; च (ca) - and; प्रदातारः (pradātāraḥ) - givers; च (ca) - and; गोलोकान् (golokān) - the worlds of cows; गच्छेयुः (gaccheyuḥ) - might attain; इति (iti) - thus; मानद (mānada) - O giver of honor;]
(Thus all beings, immobile and mobile and the givers also, the worlds of cows might attain, thus, O giver of honor.)
Thus, O giver of honor, all beings—immobile and mobile—and those who give (cows) might attain the worlds of cows. (13-78-4)
ताभ्यो वरं ददौ ब्रह्मा तपसोऽन्ते स्वयं प्रभुः। एवं भवत्विति विभुर्लोकांस्तारयतेति च ॥१३-७८-५॥
tābhyo varaṃ dadau brahmā tapaso ’nte svayaṃ prabhuḥ। evaṃ bhavatv iti vibhur lokāṃs tārayateti ca ॥13-78-5॥
[ताभ्यः (tābhyaḥ) - to them (those); वरं (varaṃ) - a boon; ददौ (dadau) - gave; ब्रह्मा (brahmā) - Brahmā; तपसः (tapasaḥ) - of (their) austerity; अन्ते (ante) - at the end; स्वयम् (svayam) - himself; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - the lord; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; भवतु (bhavatu) - let it be; इति (iti) - thus (quote ending); विभुः (vibhuḥ) - the all-pervading one; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds (beings); तारयते (tārayate) - causes to cross (saves); इति (iti) - thus (quote ending); च (ca) - and;]
(To them a boon gave Brahmā at the end of austerity, himself, the lord. Thus, "let it be" (he said); so the all-pervading one saves the worlds, thus, and.)
At the end of their austerity, Brahmā himself, the lord, granted them a boon. Thus, saying "let it be," the all-pervading one indeed saves the worlds. (13-78-5)
उत्तस्थुः सिद्धिकामास्ता भूतभव्यस्य मातरः। तपसोऽन्ते महाराज गावो लोकपरायणाः ॥१३-७८-६॥
uttasthuḥ siddhikāmās tā bhūta-bhavyasya mātaraḥ. tapaso 'nte mahārāja gāvo loka-parāyaṇāḥ ॥13-78-6॥
[उत्तस्थुः (uttasthuḥ) - rose up; सिद्धिकामाः (siddhikāmāḥ) - desirous of success; ता (tā) - they; भूतभव्यस्य (bhūta-bhavyasya) - of the past and future; मातरः (mātaraḥ) - mothers; तपसः (tapasaḥ) - of austerity; अन्ते (ante) - at the end; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; गावः (gāvaḥ) - the cows; लोकपरायणाः (loka-parāyaṇāḥ) - devoted to the world;]
(Rose up, desirous of success, they, of the past and future, mothers; at the end of austerity, O great king, the cows devoted to the world.)
O great king, at the end of their austerity, the cows—who are the mothers of the past and the future, desirous of success, and devoted to the world—rose up. (13-78-6)
तस्माद्गावो महाभागाः पवित्रं परमुच्यते। तथैव सर्वभूतानां गावस्तिष्ठन्ति मूर्धनि ॥१३-७८-७॥
tasmādgāvo mahābhāgāḥ pavitraṃ paramucyate। tathaiva sarvabhūtānāṃ gāvastiṣṭhanti mūrdhani॥13-78-7॥
[तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; गावः (gāvaḥ) - cows; महाभागाः (mahābhāgāḥ) - greatly fortunate ones; पवित्रं (pavitraṃ) - purity; परम् (param) - supreme; उच्यते (ucyate) - is said; तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; सर्वभूतानाम् (sarvabhūtānām) - of all beings; गावः (gāvaḥ) - cows; तिष्ठन्ति (tiṣṭhanti) - remain; मूर्धनि (mūrdhani) - on the head;]
(Therefore, cows, greatly fortunate, supreme purity is said. In the same way, of all beings, cows remain on the head.)
Therefore, cows—being greatly fortunate—are said to be the highest purity. In the same way, among all beings, cows are regarded as supreme. (13-78-7)
समानवत्सां कपिलां धेनुं दत्त्वा पयस्विनीम्। सुव्रतां वस्त्रसंवीतां ब्रह्मलोके महीयते ॥१३-७८-८॥
samānavatsāṃ kapilāṃ dhenuṃ dattvā payasvinīm। suvratāṃ vastrasaṃvītāṃ brahmaloke mahīyate ॥13-78-8॥
[समानवत्साम् (samānavatsām) - having a similar calf; कपिलाम् (kapilām) - tawny-colored; धेनुम् (dhenuṃ) - cow; दत्त्वा (dattvā) - having given; पयस्विनीम् (payasvinīm) - full of milk; सुव्रताम् (suvratām) - of good vows; वस्त्रसंवीताम् (vastrasaṃvītām) - clothed with cloth; ब्रह्मलोके (brahmaloke) - in the world of Brahma; महीयते (mahīyate) - is honored;]
(Having given a tawny-colored cow with a similar calf, full of milk, of good vows, clothed with cloth, one is honored in the world of Brahma.)
By giving a tawny-colored cow with a similar calf, full of milk, of virtuous conduct, and clothed in cloth, one is honored in Brahma's world. (13-78-8)
रोहिणीं तुल्यवत्सां तु धेनुं दत्त्वा पयस्विनीम्। सुव्रतां वस्त्रसंवीतां सूर्यलोके महीयते ॥१३-७८-९॥
rohiṇīṃ tulyavatsāṃ tu dhenuṃ dattvā payasvinīm। suvratāṃ vastrasaṃvītāṃ sūryaloke mahīyate ॥13-78-9॥
[रोहिणीं (rohiṇīṃ) - a reddish (cow); तुल्यवत्सां (tulyavatsāṃ) - with a similar calf; तु (tu) - but; धेनुं (dhenuṃ) - a cow; दत्त्वा (dattvā) - having given; पयस्विनीम् (payasvinīm) - one full of milk; milk-yielding; सुव्रतां (suvratāṃ) - of good vows; disciplined; वस्त्रसंवीतां (vastrasaṃvītāṃ) - clad in cloth; draped with cloth; सूर्यलोके (sūryaloke) - in the world of the Sun; in the solar realm; महीयते (mahīyate) - is honored; is exalted; is revered;]
(Having given a reddish cow with a similar calf, milk-yielding, disciplined, clad in cloth, one is honored in the world of the Sun.)
One who gives a reddish cow with a similar calf, full of milk, disciplined and draped in cloth, becomes exalted in the world of the Sun. (13-78-9)
समानवत्सां शबलां धेनुं दत्त्वा पयस्विनीम्। सुव्रतां वस्त्रसंवीतां सोमलोके महीयते ॥१३-७८-१०॥
samānavatsāṃ śabalāṃ dhenuṃ dattvā payasvinīm। suvratāṃ vastrasaṃvītāṃ somaloke mahīyate ॥13-78-10॥
[समानवत्साम् (samānavatsām) - having a calf of the same (age); शबलाम् (śabalām) - spotted (cow); धेनुम् (dhenuṃ) - cow; दत्त्वा (dattvā) - having given; पयस्विनीम् (payasvinīm) - milky (abundant in milk); सुव्रताम् (suvratām) - well-vowed; वस्त्रसंवीताम् (vastrasaṃvītām) - clothed with garment; सोमलोके (somaloke) - in the world of Soma; महीयते (mahīyate) - is honored;]
(Having given a spotted cow, having a calf of the same (age), abounding in milk, well-vowed, clothed with a garment, one is honored in the world of Soma.)
By giving a spotted cow with a calf of the same (age), rich in milk, virtuous, and clothed in a garment, one becomes honored in the world of Soma. (13-78-10)
समानवत्सां श्वेतां तु धेनुं दत्त्वा पयस्विनीम्। सुव्रतां वस्त्रसंवीतामिन्द्रलोके महीयते ॥१३-७८-११॥
samānavatsāṃ śvetāṃ tu dhenuṃ dattvā payasvinīm. suvratāṃ vastrasaṃvītām indraloke mahīyate ॥13-78-11॥
[समानवत्साम् (samānavatsām) - having similar calves; श्वेताम् (śvetām) - white; तु (tu) - but; धेनुम् (dhenuṃ) - cow; दत्त्वा (dattvā) - having given; पयस्विनीम् (payasvinīm) - abounding in milk; सुव्रताम् (suvratām) - well-disciplined; वस्त्रसंवीताम् (vastrasaṃvītām) - clothed with garments; इन्द्रलोके (indraloke) - in the world of Indra; महीयते (mahīyate) - is honored;]
(Having given a cow with similar calves, white, abounding in milk, well-disciplined, clothed with garments, but in the world of Indra, is honored.)
One who gives a white cow with similar calves, abounding in milk, well-disciplined and clad in cloth, is honored in the world of Indra. (13-78-11)
समानवत्सां कृष्णां तु धेनुं दत्त्वा पयस्विनीम्। सुव्रतां वस्त्रसंवीतामग्निलोके माहीयते ॥१३-७८-१२॥
samānavatsāṃ kṛṣṇāṃ tu dhenuṃ dattvā payasvinīm। suvratāṃ vastrasaṃvītām agniloke mahīyate ॥13-78-12॥
[समानवत्साम् (samānavatsām) - having an equal-aged calf; कृष्णाम् (kṛṣṇām) - black (cow); तु (tu) - but; धेनुम् (dhenuṃ) - cow; दत्त्वा (dattvā) - having given; पयस्विनीम् (payasvinīm) - one who yields milk; सुव्रताम् (suvratām) - of good vows; वस्त्रसंवीताम् (vastrasaṃvītām) - clothed with garments; अग्निलोके (agniloke) - in the world of Agni; महीयते (mahīyate) - is honored;]
("Having given a black cow with an equal-aged calf, yielding milk, of good vows, clothed with garments, in the world of Agni, is honored.")
"Having gifted a black cow with an equal-aged calf, yielding milk, endowed with good vows and clothed in garments, one is honored in the world of Agni." (13-78-12)
समानवत्सां धूम्रां तु धेनुं दत्त्वा पयस्विनीम्। सुव्रतां वस्त्रसंवीतां याम्यलोके महीयते ॥१३-७८-१३॥
samānavatsāṃ dhūmrāṃ tu dhenuṃ dattvā payasvinīm। suvratāṃ vastrasaṃvītāṃ yāmyaloke mahīyate ॥13-78-13॥
[समानवत्सां (samānavatsām) - having calves of the same age; धूम्रां (dhūmrām) - of grey color; तु (tu) - but; धेनुं (dhenuṃ) - cow; दत्त्वा (dattvā) - having given; पयस्विनीम् (payasvinīm) - full of milk; सुव्रतां (suvratām) - of good vows; वस्त्रसंवीतां (vastrasaṃvītām) - clothed with a garment; याम्यलोके (yāmyaloke) - in the realm of Yama; महीयते (mahīyate) - is honored;]
(Having given a cow, grey, with calves of the same age, full of milk, of good vows, clothed in a garment, one is honored in the realm of Yama.)
By giving a grey cow with calves of the same age, full of milk, virtuous and covered with cloth, one is honored in the world of Yama. (13-78-13)
अपां फेनसवर्णां तु सवत्सां कांस्यदोहनाम्। प्रदाय वस्त्रसंवीतां वारुणं लोकमश्नुते ॥१३-७८-१४॥
apāṃ phenasavarṇāṃ tu savatsāṃ kāṃsyadohanām। pradāya vastrasaṃvītāṃ vāruṇaṃ lokamaśnute॥13-78-14॥
[अपां (apāṃ) - of waters; of water; फेनसवर्णां (phenasavarṇām) - having the color of foam; तु (tu) - but; सवत्सां (savatsām) - with calf; कांस्यदोहनाम् (kāṃsyadohanām) - having a milking-vessel of bronze; प्रदाय (pradāya) - having given; वस्त्रसंवीतां (vastrasaṃvītām) - clothed in cloth; वारुणं (vāruṇam) - Varuṇa's; लोकम् (lokam) - world; अश्नुते (aśnute) - attains;]
(But having given (a cow) of waters, of the color of foam, with a calf, with a bronze milking-vessel, clothed in cloth, one attains the world of Varuṇa.)
But by giving a cow of the color of water's foam, with a calf, a bronze milking-vessel, and clothed in cloth, one attains the world of Varuṇa. (13-78-14)
वातरेणुसवर्णां तु सवत्सां कांस्यदोहनाम्। प्रदाय वस्त्रसंवीतां वायुलोके महीयते ॥१३-७८-१५॥
vātareṇusavarṇāṃ tu savatsāṃ kāṃsyadohanām। pradāya vastrasaṃvītāṃ vāyuloke mahīyate॥13-78-15॥
[वातरेणुसवर्णां (vātareṇusavarṇām) - of the color of wind-blown dust; तु (tu) - but; सवत्सां (savatsām) - with calf; कांस्यदोहनाम् (kāṃsyadohanām) - having a bronze milking vessel; प्रदाय (pradāya) - having given; वस्त्रसंवीतां (vastrasaṃvītām) - clothed in cloth; वायुलोके (vāyuloke) - in the world of wind; महीयते (mahīyate) - is honored;]
(But having given (a cow) of the color of wind-blown dust, with (her) calf, having a bronze milking vessel, clothed in cloth, one is honored in the world of wind.)
But whoever gives a cow of the color of wind-blown dust, along with her calf, equipped with a bronze milking vessel and clothed in cloth, is honored in the domain of the wind. (13-78-15)
हिरण्यवर्णां पिङ्गाक्षीं सवत्सां कांस्यदोहनाम्। प्रदाय वस्त्रसंवीतां कौबेरं लोकमश्नुते ॥१३-७८-१६॥
hiraṇyavarṇāṃ piṅgākṣīṃ savatsāṃ kāṃsyadohanām। pradāya vastrasaṃvītāṃ kauberaṃ lokamaśnute ॥13-78-16॥
[हिरण्यवर्णां (hiraṇyavarṇām) - golden-colored (feminine accusative singular); पिङ्गाक्षीं (piṅgākṣīm) - tawny-eyed (feminine accusative singular); सवत्सां (savatsām) - with calf (feminine accusative singular); कांस्यदोहनाम् (kāṃsyadohanām) - having a bronze (vessel) for milking (feminine accusative singular); प्रदाय (pradāya) - having given; वस्त्रसंवीतां (vastrasaṃvītām) - clothed with cloth (feminine accusative singular); कौबेरं (kauberaṃ) - of Kubera (possessive, masculine accusative singular); लोकम् (lokam) - world (accusative singular); अश्नुते (aśnute) - attains (3rd person singular, present indicative, middle voice);]
(Having given a golden-colored, tawny-eyed cow with calf and a bronze milking vessel, clothed in cloth, (one) attains the world of Kubera.)
By giving a golden-hued, tawny-eyed cow with a calf and a bronze milking vessel, adorned in cloth, one attains the world of Kubera. (13-78-16)
पलालधूम्रवर्णां तु सवत्सां कांस्यदोहनाम्। प्रदाय वस्त्रसंवीतां पितृलोके महीयते ॥१३-७८-१७॥
palāla-dhūmra-varṇāṁ tu savatsāṁ kāṁsya-dohanām। pradāya vastra-saṁvītāṁ pitṛ-loke mahīyate॥13-78-17॥
[पलालधूम्रवर्णाम् (palāla-dhūmra-varṇām) - of straw-smoke color; तु (tu) - but; सवत्साम् (savatsām) - with calf; कांस्यदोहनाम् (kāṁsya-dohanām) - having milking vessel of bronze; प्रदाय (pradāya) - having given; वस्त्रसंवीताम् (vastra-saṁvītām) - clothed with cloth; पितृलोके (pitṛ-loke) - in the world of the ancestors; महीयते (mahīyate) - is honored;]
(But one who gives a cow of straw-smoke color with calf, having a milking vessel of bronze, clothed with cloth, is honored in the world of the ancestors.)
But one who donates a straw-smoke colored cow along with her calf, furnished with a bronze milking vessel and draped in cloth, becomes honored in the world of the ancestors. (13-78-17)
सवत्सां पीवरीं दत्त्वा शितिकण्ठामलङ्कृताम्। वैश्वदेवमसम्बाधं स्थानं श्रेष्ठं प्रपद्यते ॥१३-७८-१८॥
savaṭsāṃ pīvarīṃ dattvā śitikaṇṭhām-alaṅkṛtām। vaiśvadevam-asambādhaṃ sthānaṃ śreṣṭhaṃ prapadyate॥13-78-18॥
[सवत्सां (savaṭsām) - having a calf; पीवरीं (pīvarīm) - fat; दत्त्वा (dattvā) - having given; शितिकण्ठामलङ्कृताम् (śitikaṇṭhām-alaṅkṛtām) - adorned for (the god) Śitikaṇṭha; वैश्वदेवमसम्बाधं (vaiśvadevam-asambādham) - to Viśvadeva, unobstructed; स्थानं (sthānam) - place; श्रेष्ठं (śreṣṭham) - excellent; प्रपद्यते (prapadyate) - attains;]
(Having given a fat cow with a calf, adorned for (the god) Śitikaṇṭha, to Viśvadeva, unobstructed, an excellent place he attains.)
Having given a fat cow with a calf, adorned for Śitikaṇṭha, for the unobstructed Viśvadeva, he attains an excellent place. (13-78-18)
समानवत्सां गौरीं तु धेनुं दत्त्वा पयस्विनीम्। सुव्रतां वस्त्रसंवीतां वसूनां लोकमश्नुते ॥१३-७८-१९॥
samānavatsāṃ gaurīṃ tu dhenuṃ dattvā payasvinīm। suvratāṃ vastrasaṃvītāṃ vasūnāṃ lokamaśnute ॥13-78-19॥
[समानवत्साम् (samānavatsām) - having a calf of the same age; गौरीम् (gaurīm) - fair (cow); तु (tu) - but; धेनुम् (dhenuṃ) - milch cow; दत्त्वा (dattvā) - having given; पयस्विनीम् (payasvinīm) - abounding in milk; सुव्रताम् (suvratām) - of good vows; वस्त्रसंवीताम् (vastrasaṃvītām) - clothed with garment; वसूनाम् (vasūnām) - of the Vasus (divinities of wealth); लोकम् (lokam) - the world; अश्नुते (aśnute) - attains;]
(Having given a fair milch cow with a calf of the same age, abounding in milk, of good vows, clothed with garment, but, attains the world of the Vasus.)
But by giving a fair milch cow with a calf of the same age, rich in milk, of good vows and clothed with a garment, one attains the world of the Vasus. (13-78-19)
पाण्डुकम्बलवर्णां तु सवत्सां कांस्यदोहनाम्। प्रदाय वस्त्रसंवीतां साध्यानां लोकमश्नुते ॥१३-७८-२०॥
pāṇḍukambalavarṇāṃ tu savatsāṃ kāṃsyadohanām। pradāya vastrasaṃvītāṃ sādhyānāṃ lokamaśnute॥13-78-20॥
[पाण्डुकम्बलवर्णाम् (pāṇḍukambalavarṇām) - having the color of a pale woollen blanket; तु (tu) - but; सवत्साम् (savatsām) - with calf; कांस्यदोहनाम् (kāṃsyadohanām) - (having) a bronze vessel for milking; प्रदाय (pradāya) - having given; वस्त्रसंवीताम् (vastrasaṃvītām) - clothed with cloth; साध्यानाम् (sādhyānām) - of the Sādhyas; लोकम् (lokam) - world; अश्नुते (aśnute) - one attains;]
(Having given a cow of pale woollen blanket color, with a calf, suitable for milking with a bronze vessel, clothed with cloth, one attains the world of the Sādhyas.)
By giving a cow of pale woolen color, with a calf, equipped with a bronze vessel for milking and draped in cloth, one attains the world of the Sādhyas. (13-78-20)
वैराटपृष्ठमुक्षाणं सर्वरत्नैरलङ्कृतम्। प्रदाय मरुतां लोकानजरान्प्रतिपद्यते ॥१३-७८-२१॥
vairāṭapṛṣṭhamukṣāṇaṃ sarvaratnairalaṅkṛtam। pradāya marutāṃ lokānajarānpratipadyate ॥13-78-21॥
[वैराटपृष्ठमुक्षाणं (vairāṭapṛṣṭhamukṣāṇam) - having the back of a mighty bull; (compound describing an object) सर्वरत्नैः (sarvaratnaiḥ) - with all jewels; अलङ्कृतम् (alaṅkṛtam) - adorned; प्रदाय (pradāya) - having given; मरुतां (marutām) - of the Maruts; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; अजरान् (ajarān) - undecaying; प्रतिपद्यते (pratipadyate) - obtains;]
(Having given the object with the back of a mighty bull, adorned with all jewels, he obtains the undecaying worlds of the Maruts.)
By presenting the object with a mighty bull's back, decorated with every jewel, one attains the eternal worlds of the Maruts. (13-78-21)
वत्सोपपन्नां नीलाङ्गां सर्वरत्नसमन्विताम्। गन्धर्वाप्सरसां लोकान्दत्त्वा प्राप्नोति मानवः ॥१३-७८-२२॥
vatsopapannāṃ nīlāṅgāṃ sarvaratnasamanvitām। gandharvāpsarasāṃ lokāndattvā prāpnoti mānavaḥ॥13-78-22॥
[वत्सोपपन्नां (vatsopapannām) - that which is newly calved (just given birth to a calf); नीलाङ्गां (nīlāṅgām) - having a dark-hued body; सर्वरत्नसमन्विताम् (sarvaratnasamanvitām) - endowed with all gems; गन्धर्वाप्सरसां (gandharvāpsarasām) - of Gandharvas and Apsarases; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; दत्त्वा (dattvā) - having given; प्राप्नोति (prāpnoti) - attains; मानवः (mānavaḥ) - a man;]
(A man, having given a newly calved, dark-bodied cow endowed with all gems, attains the worlds of the Gandharvas and Apsarases.)
When a man donates a dark-complexioned cow that has just calved and is adorned with all jewels, he attains the worlds of the Gandharvas and Apsarases. (13-78-22)
शितिकण्ठमनड्वाहं सर्वरत्नैरलङ्कृतम्। दत्त्वा प्रजापतेर्लोकान्विशोकः प्रतिपद्यते ॥१३-७८-२३॥
śitikaṇṭham anaḍvāhaṁ sarvaratnair alaṅkṛtam। dattvā prajāpater lokān viśokaḥ pratipadyate॥13-78-23॥
[शितिकण्ठम् (śitikaṇṭham) - dark-throated (one); अनड्वाहम् (anaḍvāham) - bull-mount (Nandi); सर्वरत्नैः (sarvaratnaiḥ) - with all jewels; अलङ्कृतम् (alaṅkṛtam) - adorned; दत्त्वा (dattvā) - having given; प्रजापतेः (prajāpateḥ) - of Prajāpati; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; विशोकः (viśokaḥ) - free from sorrow; प्रतिपद्यते (pratipadyate) - attains;]
("Having given the dark-throated bull-mount adorned with all jewels, one attains the worlds of Prajāpati, free from sorrow." (13-78-23))
"By bestowing the bull-mount of Śiva, adorned with all jewels, one attains the worlds of Prajāpati and becomes free from sorrow." (13-78-23)
गोप्रदानरतो याति भित्त्वा जलदसञ्चयान्। विमानेनार्कवर्णेन दिवि राजन्विराजता ॥१३-७८-२४॥
gopradānarato yāti bhittvā jaladasañcayān। vimānenārkavarṇena divi rājanvirājatā ॥13-78-24॥
[गोप्रदानरतो (gopradānarataḥ) - engaged in the giving of cows; याति (yāti) - goes; भित्त्वा (bhittvā) - having pierced; जलदसञ्चयान् (jaladasañcayān) - masses of clouds; विमानेन (vimānena) - by a celestial car; अर्कवर्णेन (arkavarṇena) - of sun-like color; दिवि (divi) - in the heaven; राजन् (rājan) - O king; विराजता (virājatā) - shining;]
(Engaged in the giving of cows goes, having pierced masses of clouds, by a celestial car of sun-like color, in the heaven, O king, shining.)
O king, the one devoted to giving cows rises, piercing masses of clouds, in a sun-bright aerial chariot, and shines in heaven. (13-78-24)
तं चारुवेषाः सुश्रोण्यः सहस्रं वरयोषितः। रमयन्ति नरश्रेष्ठ गोप्रदानरतं नरम् ॥१३-७८-२५॥
taṃ cāruveṣāḥ suśroṇyaḥ sahasraṃ varayoṣitaḥ। ramayanti naraśreṣṭha gopradānarataṃ naram ॥13-78-25॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; चारुवेषाः (cāruveṣāḥ) - of beautiful attire; सुश्रोण्यः (suśroṇyaḥ) - having lovely hips; सहस्रं (sahasraṃ) - a thousand; वरयोषितः (varayoṣitaḥ) - excellent women; रमयन्ति (ramayanti) - delight; नरश्रेष्ठ (naraśreṣṭha) - O best of men; गोप्रदानरतं (gopradānarataṃ) - engaged in the giving of cows; नरम् (naram) - the man;]
(Him, of beautiful attire, having lovely hips, a thousand excellent women delight, O best of men, engaged in the giving of cows, the man.)
O best of men, a thousand excellent women with beautiful attire and lovely hips delight the man who is engaged in the giving of cows. (13-78-25)
वीणानां वल्लकीनां च नूपुराणां च शिञ्जितैः। हासैश्च हरिणाक्षीणां प्रसुप्तः प्रतिबोध्यते ॥१३-७८-२६॥
vīṇānāṃ vallakīnām ca nūpurāṇām ca śiñjitaiḥ। hāsaiś ca hariṇākṣīṇām prasuptaḥ pratibodhyate ॥13-78-26॥
[वीणानां (vīṇānām) - of vīṇās; (stringed musical instruments); वल्लकीनां (vallakīnām) - of vallakīs; (type of lute); च (ca) - and; नूपुराणां (nūpurāṇām) - of anklets; च (ca) - and; शिञ्जितैः (śiñjitaiḥ) - with (their) tinkling sounds; हासैः (hāsaiḥ) - with the laughter; च (ca) - and; हरिणाक्षीणां (hariṇākṣīṇām) - of doe-eyed (women); प्रसुप्तः (prasuptaḥ) - sleeping; (one who is asleep); प्रतिबोध्यते (pratibodhyate) - is awakened;]
(With the tinkling sounds of vīṇās, vallakīs, and anklets, and with the laughter of doe-eyed (women), the sleeping (one) is awakened.)
The sleeper is awakened by the tinkling of vīṇās, vallakīs, anklets, and by the laughter of doe-eyed women. (13-78-26)
यावन्ति लोमानि भवन्ति धेन्वा; स्तावन्ति वर्षाणि महीयते सः। स्वर्गाच्च्युतश्चापि ततो नृलोके; कुले समुत्पत्स्यति गोमिनां सः ॥१३-७८-२७॥
yāvanti lomāni bhavanti dhenvā; stāvanti varṣāṇi mahīyate saḥ. svargāccyutaścāpi tato nṛloke; kule samutpatsyati gomināṃ saḥ ॥13-78-27॥
[यावन्ति (yāvanti) - as many as; लोमानि (lomāni) - hairs; भवन्ति (bhavanti) - are (there); धेन्वा (dhenvā) - on the cow; स्तावन्ति (stāvanti) - so many; वर्षाणि (varṣāṇi) - years; महीयते (mahīyate) - is honored; सः (saḥ) - he; स्वर्गात् (svargāt) - from heaven; च्युतः (cyutaḥ) - fallen; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; ततः (tataḥ) - from there; नृलोके (nṛloke) - in the human world; कुले (kule) - in the family; समुत्पत्स्यति (samutpatsyati) - will be born; गोमिनां (gomināṃ) - of cattle owners; सः (saḥ) - he;]
(As many as hairs are (there) on the cow; so many years is honored he. From heaven fallen and also from there, in the human world, in the family of cattle owners, he will be born.)
He is honored in heaven for as many years as there are hairs on the cow; when fallen from heaven, he will also be born in the human world in a family of cattle owners. (13-78-27)
