mayā gavāṃ purīṣaṃ vai śriyā juṣṭam iti śrutam. etad icchāmi ahaṃ śrotuṃ saṃśayaḥ atra hi me mahān ॥13-81-1॥

I have heard that 'the dung of cows is indeed endowed with prosperity.' I wish to hear about this, for I have a great doubt about it. (13-81-1)

(Who are you, O goddess? From where or you, by form incomparable on earth. Astonished indeed, O greatly fortunate one, of your form's splendor.)
O goddess, who are you? From where do you come, you who are incomparable in form on earth? We are truly astonished, O greatly fortunate one, at the splendor of your form. (13-81-4)
इच्छामस्त्वां वयं ज्ञातुं का त्वं क्व च गमिष्यसि। तत्त्वेन च सुवर्णाभे सर्वमेतद्ब्रवीहि नः ॥१३-८१-५॥
icchāmas tvāṃ vayaṃ jñātuṃ kā tvaṃ kva ca gamiṣyasi। tattvena ca suvarṇābhe sarvam etad bravīhi naḥ ॥13-81-5॥

We wish to know you—who you are, where you will go; therefore, O golden-hued one, truly tell us all this. (13-81-5)

lokakāntā'smi bhadraṃ vaḥ śrīr nāmneha pariśrutā। mayā daityāḥ parityaktā vinaṣṭāḥ śāśvatīḥ samāḥ ॥13-81-6॥

(I am the beloved of the worlds; auspiciousness to you. Prosperity is here well-known by name. By me, the Daityas have been abandoned and destroyed for eternal ages.)

इन्द्रो विवस्वान्सोमश्च विष्णुरापोऽग्निरेव च। मयाभिपन्ना ऋध्यन्ते ऋषयो देवतास्तथा ॥१३-८१-७॥

(Indra, Vivasvat, Soma, and Viṣṇu, waters, Agni indeed and, by me possessed, prosper, sages, deities thus.)
Indra, Vivasvat, Soma, Viṣṇu, the Waters, and Agni — all, when possessed by me, as well as sages and deities, thus prosper. (13-81-7)
यांश्च द्विषाम्यहं गावस्ते विनश्यन्ति सर्वशः। धर्मार्थकामहीनाश्च ते भवन्त्यसुखान्विताः ॥१३-८१-८॥
yāṁś ca dviṣāmi ahaṁ gāvaḥ te vinaśyanti sarvaśaḥ। dharma-artha-kāma-hīnāś ca te bhavanti asukhānvitāḥ॥13-81-8॥
[यांश्च (yāṁś ca) - whom and; द्विषाम्यहम् (dviṣāmi aham) - I hate; गावस्ते (gāvaḥ te) - the cows, they; विनश्यन्ति (vinaśyanti) - perish; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - entirely; धर्मार्थकामहीनाश्च (dharma-artha-kāma-hīnāś ca) - bereft of dharma, artha, and kāma, and; ते (te) - they; भवन्त्यसुखान्विताः (bhavanti asukhānvitāḥ) - become joined with unhappiness;]
(Whom and I hate, the cows, they perish entirely. Bereft of dharma, artha, and kāma, and they become joined with unhappiness.)
Those whom I hate—their cows perish completely, and they are deprived of virtue, wealth, and pleasure, becoming afflicted with misfortune. (13-81-8)
एवम्प्रभावां मां गावो विजानीत सुखप्रदाम्। इच्छामि चापि युष्मासु वस्तुं सर्वासु नित्यदा ॥ आगता प्रार्थयानाहं श्रीजुष्टा भवतानघाः ॥१३-८१-९॥
evam-prabhāvāṃ māṃ gāvo vijānīta sukhapradām। icchāmi cāpi yuṣmāsu vastuṃ sarvāsu nityadā ॥ āgatā prārthayānāhaṃ śrī-juṣṭā bhavatām-aghāḥ ॥13-81-9॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; प्रभावाम् (prabhāvām) - powerful; माम् (mām) - me; गावः (gāvaḥ) - cows; विजानीत (vijānīta) - should know; सुखप्रदाम् (sukhapradām) - giver of happiness; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I wish; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; युष्मासु (yuṣmāsu) - among you; वस्तुम् (vastuṃ) - to dwell; सर्वासु (sarvāsu) - in all; नित्यदा (nityadā) - always; आगता (āgatā) - having come; प्रार्थयाना (prārthayānā) - requesting; अहम् (aham) - I; श्रीजुष्टा (śrī-juṣṭā) - endowed with prosperity; भवताम् (bhavatām) - of you; अघाः (aghāḥ) - sinless ones;]
(Thus powerful me the cows should know, giver of happiness. I wish and also among you to dwell in all always. Having come, requesting, I endowed with prosperity (stand) before you, O sinless ones.)
Cows should thus recognize me, their giver of happiness and power. I also wish to always dwell among all of you. Having come, I, endowed with prosperity, earnestly request to be with you, O sinless ones. (13-81-9)

adhruvāṃ cañcalāṃ ca tvāṃ sāmānyāṃ bahubhiḥ saha। na tvām icchāmi bhadraṃ te gamyatāṃ yatra rocate ॥13-81-10॥
[अध्रुवां (adhruvāṃ) - unstable; चञ्चलां (cañcalāṃ) - fickle; च (ca) - and; त्वां (tvāṃ) - you; सामान्यां (sāmānyāṃ) - common; बहुभिः (bahubhiḥ) - with many; सह (saha) - together; न (na) - not; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I desire; भद्रं (bhadraṃ) - welfare; ते (te) - to you; गम्यतां (gamyatāṃ) - go; यत्र (yatra) - where; रोचते (rocate) - pleases;]
(Unstable, fickle, and you, common, with many together; not you I desire. Welfare to you; go where it pleases.)

वपुष्मन्त्यो वयं सर्वाः किमस्माकं त्वयाद्य वै। यत्रेष्टं गम्यतां तत्र कृतकार्या वयं त्वया ॥१३-८१-११॥
vapuṣmantyo vayaṃ sarvāḥ kim asmākaṃ tvayādya vai। yatreṣṭaṃ gamyatāṃ tatra kṛtakāryā vayaṃ tvayā ॥13-81-11॥
[वपुष्मन्त्यः (vapuṣmantyaḥ) - possessing forms (bodies); वयम् (vayam) - we; सर्वाः (sarvāḥ) - all; किम् (kim) - what; अस्माकम् (asmākam) - of us; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; आद्य (ādya) - today; वै (vai) - indeed; यत्र (yatra) - where; इष्टम् (iṣṭam) - desired (is); गम्यताम् (gamyatām) - may it be gone; let (one) go; तत्र (tatra) - there; कृतकार्याः (kṛtakāryāḥ) - having accomplished the task; वयम् (vayam) - we; त्वया (tvayā) - by you;]
(Possessing forms, we all, what of us by you today indeed? Where it is desired, go there; having accomplished the task, we (are) by you.)
We, all possessing forms, what do we have to do with you today? Go wherever it is desired; we have fulfilled our work by you. (13-81-11)

kim etad vaḥ kṣamaṃ gāvaḥ yat māṃ na iha abhyanandatha। na māṃ samprati gṛhṇītha kasmāt vai durlabhāṃ satīm॥13-81-12॥
[किम् (kim) - what; एतत् (etad) - this; वः (vaḥ) - by you; क्षमम् (kṣamam) - fit; worthy; गावः (gāvaḥ) - cows; यत् (yat) - that; माम् (mām) - me; न (na) - not; इह (iha) - here; अभ्यनन्दथ (abhyanandatha) - you welcomed; न (na) - not; माम् (mām) - me; सम्प्रति (samprati) - now; at present; गृह्णीथ (gṛhṇītha) - you accept; कस्मात् (kasmāt) - for what reason; why; वै (vai) - indeed; दुर्लभाम् (durlabhām) - hard to obtain; rare; सतीम् (satīm) - being; existing (feminine accusative singular);]
(What is this by you, cows, (that is) fitting, that me not here you welcomed? Not me now you accept; for what reason indeed being rare (female)?)
What is this fitting conduct by you, cows, that you did not welcome me here? Now you do not accept me; for what reason indeed, though I am rare (among women)? (13-81-12)
सत्यश्च लोकवादोऽयं लोके चरति सुव्रताः। स्वयं प्राप्ते परिभवो भवतीति विनिश्चयः ॥१३-८१-१३॥
satyaś ca lokavādo'yaṃ loke carati suvratāḥ। svayaṃ prāpte paribhavo bhavatīti viniścayaḥ ॥13-81-13॥
[सत्यः (satyaḥ) - truth; verily; च (ca) - and; लोकवादः (lokavādaḥ) - public opinion; popular talk; अयम् (ayam) - this; लोके (loke) - in the world; चरति (carati) - circulates; moves; सुव्रताः (suvratāḥ) - O virtuous ones; स्वयम् (svayam) - of itself; spontaneously; प्राप्ते (prāpte) - when reached; upon arriving; परिभवः (paribhavaḥ) - dishonor; insult; भवति (bhavati) - happens; arises; इति (iti) - thus; विनिश्चयः (viniścayaḥ) - certainty; decision;]
(Truth and this public opinion, O virtuous ones, circulate in the world; when dishonor comes of itself, it is certain thus.)
O virtuous ones, it is certain that both truth and popular opinion circulate in the world; when dishonor comes on its own, this is the established fact. (13-81-13)
महदुग्रं तपः कृत्वा मां निषेवन्ति मानवाः। देवदानवगन्धर्वाः पिशाचोरगराक्षसाः ॥१३-८१-१४॥
mahad-ugraṃ tapaḥ kṛtvā māṃ niṣevanti mānavāḥ। deva-dānava-gandharvāḥ piśāca-uraga-rākṣasāḥ॥13-81-14॥
[महद्-उग्रम् (mahad-ugram) - great and intense; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having performed; माम् (mām) - me; निषेवन्ति (niṣevanti) - serve; मानवाः (mānavāḥ) - humans; देव-दानव-गन्धर्वाः (deva-dānava-gandharvāḥ) - gods, demons and gandharvas; पिशाच-उरग-राक्षसाः (piśāca-uraga-rākṣasāḥ) - piśācas, serpents and rākṣasas;]
(Having performed great and intense austerity, me serve humans; gods, demons and gandharvas, piśācas, serpents and rākṣasas.)
Humans serve me by performing great and intense austerity; so do gods, demons, gandharvas, piśācas, serpents, and rākṣasas. (13-81-14)
क्षममेतद्धि वो गावः प्रतिगृह्णीत मामिह। नावमन्या ह्यहं सौम्यास्त्रैलोक्ये सचराचरे ॥१३-८१-१५॥
kṣamam etad dhi vo gāvaḥ pratigṛhṇīta mām iha। nāvam anyā hi ahaṃ saumyāḥ trailokye sacarācare॥13-81-15॥
[क्षमम् (kṣamam) - forgivable; endurable; एतत् (etat) - this; हि (hi) - for; indeed; वः (vo) - your; of you; गावः (gāvaḥ) - cows; (vocative) O cows; प्रतिगृह्णीत (pratigṛhṇīta) - please accept; माम् (mām) - me; इह (iha) - here; न (na) - not; अवमन्या (avaman-yā) - despise; हि (hi) - for; indeed; अहम् (aham) - I; सौम्याः (saumyāḥ) - gentle ones; O gentle ones; त्रैलोक्ये (trailokye) - in the three worlds; सचराचरे (sacarācare) - with moving and unmoving beings;]
(Forgivable this indeed by you, O cows, please accept me here; not despise indeed I, O gentle ones, in the three worlds with moving and unmoving beings.)
O cows, this is indeed forgivable by you; please accept me here. Do not despise me, O gentle ones, anywhere in the three worlds with all moving and unmoving beings. (13-81-15)

नावमन्यामहे देवि न त्वां परिभवामहे। अध्रुवा चलचित्तासि ततस्त्वां वर्जयामहे ॥१३-८१-१६॥
nāvamanyāmahe devi na tvāṃ paribhavāmahe. adhrūvā calacittāsi tatastvāṃ varjayāmahe ॥13-81-16॥
[न (na) - not; अवमन्यामहे (avamanyāmahe) - we despise; देवि (devi) - O goddess; न (na) - not; त्वां (tvāṃ) - you; परिभवामहे (paribhavāmahe) - we insult; अध्रुवा (adhrūvā) - unsteady; चलचित्ता (calacittā) - fickle-minded; असि (asi) - you are; ततः (tataḥ) - therefore; त्वां (tvāṃ) - you; वर्जयामहे (varjayāmahe) - we abandon;]
(Not we despise, O goddess, not you we insult. Unsteady, fickle-minded you are, therefore you we abandon.)
O goddess, we do not despise you nor do we insult you. But since you are unsteady and fickle-minded, therefore we abandon you. (13-81-16)
बहुनात्र किमुक्तेन गम्यतां यत्र वाञ्छसि। वपुष्मत्यो वयं सर्वाः किमस्माकं त्वयानघे ॥१३-८१-१७॥
bahunātra kimuktena gamyatāṃ yatra vāñchasi। vapuṣmatyo vayaṃ sarvāḥ kimasmākaṃ tvayānaghe ॥13-81-17॥
[बहुना (bahunā) - with many (words); अत्र (atra) - here; किम् (kim) - what; उक्तेन (uktena) - having been said; गम्यताम् (gamyatām) - let (it) be gone; यत्र (yatra) - where; वाञ्छसि (vāñchasi) - you desire; वपुष्मत्यः (vapuṣmatyaḥ) - beautiful-bodied ones; वयम् (vayam) - we; सर्वाः (sarvāḥ) - all; किम् (kim) - what; अस्माकम् (asmākam) - of us; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; अनघे (anaghe) - O sinless one;]
(With many (words) here, what having been said? Let (it) be gone where you desire. Beautiful-bodied ones, we all—what (is) of us by you, O sinless one?)
Why say much here? Go wherever you desire. We all, beautiful-bodied ones—what have we to do with you, O sinless one? (13-81-17)

[अवज्ञाता (avajñātā) - one who is disregarded; भविष्यामि (bhaviṣyāmi) - I shall become; सर्वलोकेषु (sarvalokeṣu) - in all worlds; मानदाः (mānadāḥ) - O bestowers of honor; प्रत्याख्यानेन (pratyākhyānena) - by rejection; युष्माभिः (yuṣmābhiḥ) - by you; प्रसादः (prasādaḥ) - favor; क्रियताम् (kriyatām) - let it be done; इति (iti) - thus;]
(O bestowers of honor, I shall become disregarded in all worlds; by rejection by you, let favor be shown thus.)
O bestowers of honor, I shall be disregarded in all worlds; therefore, by your rejection, let this favor be granted. (13-81-18)
महाभागा भवत्यो वै शरण्याः शरणागताम्। परित्रायन्तु मां नित्यं भजमानामनिन्दिताम् ॥ माननां त्वहमिच्छामि भवत्यः सततं शुभाः ॥१३-८१-१९॥

(Greatly fortunate ones, you indeed are worthy of refuge, (please) protect the one who has taken refuge—me, always, blameless and worshipping. But I desire honor from you always, auspicious ones.)
O greatly fortunate ladies, you are indeed worthy of refuge. Please always protect me, who is blameless and devoted to worship. But, auspicious ladies, I desire honor from you at all times. (13-81-19)
अप्येकाङ्गे तु वो वस्तुमिच्छामि च सुकुत्सिते। न वोऽस्ति कुत्सितं किञ्चिदङ्गेष्वालक्ष्यतेऽनघाः ॥१३-८१-२०॥
apyekāṅge tu vo vastumicchāmi ca sukutsite। na vo'sti kutsitaṃ kiñcid aṅgeṣv ālakṣyate'naghāḥ ॥13-81-20॥
[अपि (api) - even; एकाङ्गे (eka-aṅge) - in one limb; तु (tu) - but; वः (vaḥ) - of you; वस्तुम् (vastum) - to find; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I wish; च (ca) - and; सुकुत्सिते (su-kutsite) - truly blameworthy; न (na) - not; वः (vaḥ) - among you; अस्ति (asti) - there is; कुत्सितम् (kutsitam) - something blameworthy; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - even a little; अङ्गेषु (aṅgeṣu) - in the limbs; आलक्ष्यते (ālakṣyate) - is perceived; अनघाः (anaghāḥ) - O sinless ones;]
(Even in a single limb, but among you, I wish to find truly blameworthy (things); not among you is there anything blameworthy, even a little, in the limbs is perceived, O sinless ones.)
Even in a single limb, I wish to find among you something truly blameworthy; yet there is nothing blameworthy at all perceived in any of your limbs, O sinless ones. (13-81-20)
पुण्याः पवित्राः सुभगा ममादेशं प्रयच्छत। वसेयं यत्र चाङ्गेऽहं तन्मे व्याख्यातुमर्हथ ॥१३-८१-२१॥
puṇyāḥ pavitrāḥ subhagā mamādeśaṃ prayacchata। vaseyaṃ yatra cāṅge'haṃ tan me vyākhyātum arhatha ॥13-81-21॥

(Holy, pure, fortunate ones, grant my command. Where I may dwell, and in limb I, that for me to explain, you are worthy.)
O holy, pure, and fortunate ones, grant my command. Please explain to me where I may reside, and in which limb I may dwell. (13-81-21)

evamuktāstu tā gāvaḥ śubhāḥ karuṇavatsalāḥ। sanmantrya sahitāḥ sarvāḥ śriyam ūcur narādhipa ॥13-81-22॥
[एवमुक्ताः (evamuktāḥ) - thus addressed; तु (tu) - but; ता (tā) - those; गावः (gāvaḥ) - cows; शुभाः (śubhāḥ) - auspicious; करुणवत्सलाः (karuṇavatsalāḥ) - compassionate and affectionate; संमन्त्र्य (sanmantrya) - having consulted together; सहिताः (sahitāḥ) - together; सर्वाः (sarvāḥ) - all; श्रियं (śriyam) - prosperity; ऊचुः (ūcuḥ) - said; नराधिप (narādhipa) - O king;]
(Thus addressed but those cows, auspicious, compassionate and affectionate, having consulted together, all together, said prosperity, O king.)

अवश्यं मानना कार्या तवास्माभिर्यशस्विनि। शकृन्मूत्रे निवस नः पुण्यमेतद्धि नः शुभे ॥१३-८१-२३॥
avaśyaṃ mānanā kāryā tavāsmābhir yaśasvini. śakṛnmūtre nivasa naḥ puṇyam etad dhi naḥ śubhe ॥13-81-23॥
[अवश्यं (avaśyam) - certainly; मानना (mānanā) - honor; कार्या (kāryā) - to be done; तव (tava) - your; अस्माभिः (asmābhiḥ) - by us; यशस्विनि (yaśasvini) - O illustrious lady; शकृन्मूत्रे (śakṛnmūtre) - in excrement and urine; निवस (nivasa) - dwell; नः (naḥ) - for us; पुण्यम् (puṇyam) - merit; एतत् (etat) - this; हि (hi) - indeed; नः (naḥ) - for us; शुभे (śubhe) - O auspicious one;]
(Certainly, honor is to be done by us to you, O illustrious lady. In excrement and urine dwell, for us this is merit indeed, O auspicious one.)
We certainly must honor you, O illustrious lady. Dwell in excrement and urine; for us, O auspicious one, this is indeed merit. (13-81-23)

diṣṭyā prasādo yuṣmābhiḥ kṛto me'nugrahātmakaḥ। evaṁ bhavatu bhadraṁ vaḥ pūjitāsmi sukhapradāḥ ॥13-81-24॥
[दिष्ट्या (diṣṭyā) - by good fortune; प्रसादः (prasādaḥ) - favor; युष्माभिः (yuṣmābhiḥ) - by you (plural); कृतः (kṛtaḥ) - done; मे (me) - to me; अनुग्रहात्मकः (anugrahātmakaḥ) - of the nature of kindness; एवं (evaṁ) - thus; भवतु (bhavatu) - let it be; भद्रं (bhadraṁ) - auspiciousness; welfare; वः (vaḥ) - for you (plural); पूजिता (pūjitā) - honored; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; सुखप्रदाः (sukhapradāḥ) - bestowers of happiness;]
(By good fortune, favor by you has been done to me, of the nature of kindness. Thus let it be, auspiciousness for you; honored I am, bestowers of happiness. (13-81-24))
By good fortune, you have shown me favor, which is full of kindness. So may it be, may welfare be yours; I have been honored by you, who grant happiness. (13-81-24)

एवं कृत्वा तु समयं श्रीर्गोभिः सह भारत। पश्यन्तीनां ततस्तासां तत्रैवान्तरधीयत ॥१३-८१-२५॥
evaṁ kṛtvā tu samayaṁ śrīr gobhiḥ saha bhārata। paśyantīnām tatas tāsām tatraiva antaradhīyata ॥13-81-25॥
[एवं (evaṁ) - thus; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; तु (tu) - but; समयं (samayam) - agreement; श्रीः (śrīḥ) - Śrī (prosperity, goddess Śrī); गोभिः (gobhiḥ) - with the cows; सह (saha) - together with; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; पश्यन्तीनां (paśyantīnām) - of those seeing; ततः (tataḥ) - then; तासां (tāsām) - of them; तत्र (tatra) - there; एव (eva) - just; अन्तरधीयत (antaradhīyata) - disappeared;]
(Thus, having made the agreement, Śrī along with the cows, O Bhārata, of those seeing, then, of them, there just disappeared.)
Thus, after making the agreement, Śrī, together with the cows, O Bhārata, in the sight of those women, then and there disappeared. (13-81-25)
एतद्गोशकृतः पुत्र माहात्म्यं तेऽनुवर्णितम्। माहात्म्यं च गवां भूयः श्रूयतां गदतो मम ॥१३-८१-२६॥
etad-gośa-kṛtaḥ putra māhātmyaṃ te'nuvarṇitam। māhātmyaṃ ca gavāṃ bhūyaḥ śrūyatāṃ gadato mama॥13-81-26॥
[एतत् (etad) - this; गोशकृतः (gośakṛtaḥ) - of the cow-sacrifice; पुत्र (putra) - O son; माहात्म्यम् (māhātmyaṃ) - greatness; ते (te) - to you; अनुवर्णितम् (anuvarṇitam) - described; माहात्म्यम् (māhātmyaṃ) - greatness; च (ca) - and; गवाम् (gavām) - of cows; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - more; श्रूयताम् (śrūyatām) - let be heard; गदतः (gadataḥ) - speaking; मम (mama) - my;]
(This greatness of the cow-sacrifice, O son, to you has been described. The greatness of cows also, more, let it be heard from my speaking.)
O son, this greatness of the cow-sacrifice has been described to you. Now, listen further to the greatness of cows as spoken by me. (13-81-26)
