ye ca gāḥ samprayacchanti hutashiṣṭāśinaś ca ye। teṣāṃ satrāṇi yajñāś ca nityam eva yudhiṣṭhira ॥13-82-1॥

(Who and cows give, and who eat offerings, and of them sacrificial sessions and sacrifices ever indeed, O Yudhiṣṭhira (13-82-1))
O Yudhiṣṭhira, those who give cows and those who eat the remnants of the offerings—their sacrificial sessions and sacrifices are ever indeed ongoing. (13-82-1)
ऋते दधिघृतेनेह न यज्ञः सम्प्रवर्तते। तेन यज्ञस्य यज्ञत्वमतोमूलं च लक्ष्यते ॥१३-८२-२॥
ṛte dadhighṛtena iha na yajñaḥ sampravartate. tena yajñasya yajñatvam atomūlaṃ ca lakṣyate ॥13-82-2॥
[ऋते (ṛte) - without; excluding; दधिघृतेन (dadhighṛtena) - by curd-and-ghee; by means of curds and clarified butter; इह (iha) - here; न (na) - not; यज्ञः (yajñaḥ) - sacrifice; ritual offering; सम्प्रवर्तते (sampravartate) - proceeds; takes place; तेन (tena) - by that; therefore; यज्ञस्य (yajñasya) - of the sacrifice; यज्ञत्वम् (yajñatvam) - sacrificeness; essential nature of sacrifice; अतो (ato) - from this; hence; मूलं (mūlaṃ) - root; foundation; च (ca) - and; लक्ष्यते (lakṣyate) - is perceived; is understood;]
(Without curd-and-ghee here, not sacrifice proceeds. By that, of sacrifice, sacrificeness, from this root and is perceived.)
A sacrifice does not take place here without curds and ghee. Therefore, the essential character of a sacrifice—and its root—is thus recognized. (13-82-2)
दानानामपि सर्वेषां गवां दानं प्रशस्यते। गावः श्रेष्ठाः पवित्राश्च पावनं ह्येतदुत्तमम् ॥१३-८२-३॥
dānānām api sarveṣāṃ gavāṃ dānaṃ praśasyate। gāvaḥ śreṣṭhāḥ pavitrāś ca pāvanaṃ hy etad uttamam ॥13-82-3॥
[दानानाम् (dānānām) - of gifts; अपि (api) - also; सर्वेषाम् (sarveṣām) - of all; गवाम् (gavām) - of cows; दानम् (dānam) - gift; प्रशस्यते (praśasyate) - is praised; गावः (gāvaḥ) - cows; श्रेष्ठाः (śreṣṭhāḥ) - excellent; पवित्राः (pavitrāḥ) - pure; च (ca) - and; पावनम् (pāvanam) - purifying; हि (hi) - indeed; एतत् (etat) - this; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - the best;]
(Of gifts also, of all, of cows, the gift is praised. Cows are excellent, pure and purifying indeed; this is the best.)
Among all gifts, the gift of cows is praised. Cows are excellent and pure, and this gifting is indeed the most purifying and the best. (13-82-3)
पुष्ट्यर्थमेताः सेवेत शान्त्यर्थमपि चैव ह। पयो दधि घृतं यासां सर्वपापप्रमोचनम् ॥१३-८२-४॥
puṣṭyarthametāḥ seveta śāntyartham api caiva ha। payo dadhi ghṛtaṃ yāsāṃ sarvapāpa-pramocanam ॥13-82-4॥
[पुष्ट्यर्थम् (puṣṭy-artham) - for the purpose of nourishment; एताः (etāḥ) - these; सवेत (seveta) - one should use; शान्त्यर्थम् (śānti-artham) - for the purpose of peace; अपि (api) - also; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; ह (ha) - certainly; पयः (payaḥ) - milk; दधि (dadhi) - curds; घृतम् (ghṛtam) - clarified butter; यासाम् (yāsām) - of which (these); सर्वपापप्रमोचनम् (sarva-pāpa-pramocanam) - liberation from all sins;]
(For the purpose of nourishment, these should be used; for the purpose of peace also, indeed certainly; milk, curds, and ghee, of which (these) there is liberation from all sins.)
One should use these (milk, curds, and ghee) for nourishment and also for achieving peace, for these offer liberation from all sins. (13-82-4)
गावस्तेजः परं प्रोक्तमिह लोके परत्र च। न गोभ्यः परमं किञ्चित्पवित्रं पुरुषर्षभ ॥१३-८२-५॥
gāvas tejaḥ paraṃ proktam iha loke paratra ca। na gobhyaḥ paramaṃ kiñcit pavitraṃ puruṣarṣabha ॥13-82-5॥
[गावः (gāvaḥ) - cows; तेजः (tejaḥ) - brilliance; परं (paraṃ) - supreme; प्रोक्तम् (proktam) - declared; इह (iha) - here; लोके (loke) - in the world; परत्र (paratra) - in the next (world); च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; गोभ्यः (gobhyaḥ) - than cows; परमं (paramaṃ) - greater; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; पवित्रं (pavitraṃ) - pure; पुरुषर्षभ (puruṣarṣabha) - O best among men;]
(Cows, brilliance, supreme, declared, here, in the world, in the next (world) and; not, than cows, greater, anything, pure, O best among men.)
Cows are declared to be the supreme brilliance here in this world and in the next; O best among men, there is nothing purer or greater than cows. (13-82-5)
अत्राप्युदाहरन्तीममितिहासं पुरातनम्। पितामहस्य संवादमिन्द्रस्य च युधिष्ठिर ॥१३-८२-६॥

पराभूतेषु दैत्येषु शक्रे त्रिभुवनेश्वरे। प्रजाः समुदिताः सर्वाः सत्यधर्मपरायणाः ॥१३-८२-७॥

अथर्षयः सगन्धर्वाः किंनरोरगराक्षसाः। देवासुरसुपर्णाश्च प्रजानां पतयस्तथा ॥ पर्युपासन्त कौरव्य कदाचिद्वै पितामहम् ॥१३-८२-८॥

Now, O Kauravya, sages along with Gandharvas, Kinnaras, serpents, Rākṣasas, gods, asuras, Suparṇas, and the lords of beings likewise, once indeed all worshipped the grandsire. (13-82-8)
नारदः पर्वतश्चैव विश्वावसुहहाहुहू। दिव्यतानेषु गायन्तः पर्युपासन्त तं प्रभुम् ॥१३-८२-९॥
nāradaḥ parvataś caiva viśvāvasuhahāhuhū। divyatāneṣu gāyantaḥ paryupāsanta taṃ prabhum ॥13-82-9॥

तत्र दिव्यानि पुष्पाणि प्रावहत्पवनस्तथा। आजह्रुरृतवश्चापि सुगन्धीनि पृथक्पृथक् ॥१३-८२-१०॥
tatra divyāni puṣpāṇi prāvahat pavanastathā। ājahrur ṛtavaś cāpi sugandhīni pṛthak pṛthak ॥13-82-10॥

[तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; देवसमावाये (deva-samāvāye) - assembly of gods; सर्वभूतसमागमे (sarva-bhūta-samāgame) - gathering of all beings; दिव्यवादित्रसङ्घुष्टे (divya-vāditra-saṅghuṣṭe) - resounding with celestial instruments; दिव्यस्त्रीचारणावृते (divya-strī-cāraṇa-āvṛte) - surrounded by celestial women and bards; इन्द्रः (indraḥ) - Indra; पप्रच्छ (papraccha) - asked; देवेशम् (deva-īśam) - lord of the gods; अभिवाद्य (abhivādya) - having saluted; प्रणम्य (praṇamya) - having bowed; च (ca) - and;]
(In that assembly of gods, in the gathering of all beings, resounding with celestial instruments, surrounded by celestial women and bards, Indra, having saluted and bowed, asked the lord of the gods.)
In that assembly of the gods, when all beings had gathered, and as celestial instruments sounded and the company was surrounded by divine women and bards, Indra respectfully bowed and asked the lord of the gods. (13-82-11)
देवानां भगवन्कस्माल्लोकेशानां पितामह। उपरिष्टाद्गवां लोक एतदिच्छामि वेदितुम् ॥१३-८२-१२॥
devānāṃ bhagavan kasmāl lokeśānāṃ pitāmaha। upariṣṭād gavāṃ loka etad icchāmi veditum ॥13-82-12॥

(Of the gods, O revered one, why, of the lords of the worlds, O grandfather, above the world of cows, this I wish to know.)
O grandfather of the lords of the worlds, O revered one, why is there a world above that of the cows belonging to the gods? I wish to know this. (13-82-12)
किं तपो ब्रह्मचर्यं वा गोभिः कृतमिहेश्वर। देवानामुपरिष्टाद्यद्वसन्त्यरजसः सुखम् ॥१३-८२-१३॥
kiṁ tapo brahmacaryaṁ vā gobhiḥ kṛtam iheśvara। devānām upariṣṭād yad vasanti arajasaḥ sukham ॥13-82-13॥

(What austerity or celibacy, or performed by cows, here, O lord? Of the gods, above, that which they dwell, free from impurity, happiness.)
O lord, is the happiness dwelling above the gods, which is free from impurity, attained here by austerity, by celibacy, or by actions performed with cows? (13-82-13)
ततः प्रोवाच तं ब्रह्मा शक्रं बलनिसूदनम्। अवज्ञातास्त्वया नित्यं गावो बलनिसूदन ॥१३-८२-१४॥
tataḥ provāca taṃ brahmā śakraṃ balanisūdanam। avajñātāstvayā nityaṃ gāvo balanisūdana ॥13-82-14॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्रोवाच (provāca) - said; तं (taṃ) - to him; ब्रह्मा (brahmā) - Brahmā; शक्रं (śakram) - Śakra (Indra); बलनिसूदनम् (balanisūdanam) - destroyer of force; अवज्ञाताः (avajñātāḥ) - disregarded; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; गावः (gāvaḥ) - cows; बलनिसूदन (balanisūdana) - destroyer of force;]
(Then said to him Brahmā to Śakra, destroyer of force: Disregarded by you always are cows, O destroyer of force.)
Then Brahmā said to Śakra, the destroyer of force: "Cows have always been disregarded by you, O destroyer of force." (13-82-14)
तेन त्वमासां माहात्म्यं न वेत्थ शृणु तत्प्रभो। गवां प्रभावं परमं माहात्म्यं च सुरर्षभ ॥१३-८२-१५॥
tena tvam āsāṃ māhātmyaṃ na vettha śṛṇu tat prabho। gavāṃ prabhāvaṃ paramaṃ māhātmyaṃ ca surarṣabha॥13-82-15॥
[तेन (tena) - by that; by him; by it; त्वम् (tvam) - you; आसां (āsāṃ) - of these; माहात्म्यं (māhātmyaṃ) - greatness; high nature; न (na) - not; वेत्थ (vettha) - know; (you) know; शृणु (śṛṇu) - hear; listen; तत् (tat) - that; प्रभो (prabho) - O lord; गवां (gavāṃ) - of cows; प्रभावं (prabhāvaṃ) - influence; power; potency; परमं (paramaṃ) - supreme; highest; माहात्म्यं (māhātmyaṃ) - greatness; च (ca) - and; सुरर्षभ (surarṣabha) - O bull among the gods;]
(By that, you of these greatness not know; hear that, O lord: of cows influence supreme greatness and, O bull among the gods.)
Because of that, you do not know the greatness of these; listen, O lord, to the supreme influence and greatness of the cows, O bull among the gods. (13-82-15)
यज्ञाङ्गं कथिता गावो यज्ञ एव च वासव। एताभिश्चाप्यृते यज्ञो न प्रवर्तेत्कथञ्चन ॥१३-८२-१६॥
yajñāṅgaṃ kathitā gāvo yajña eva ca vāsava। etābhiścāpyṛte yajño na pravartetakathaṃcana ॥13-82-16॥
[यज्ञाङ्गं (yajñāṅgam) - a limb of sacrifice; कथिता (kathitā) - are said; गावः (gāvaḥ) - cows; यज्ञः (yajñaḥ) - sacrifice; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and; वासव (vāsava) - O Indra; एताभिः (etābhiḥ) - by these (cows); च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - even; ऋते (ṛte) - without; यज्ञः (yajñaḥ) - sacrifice; न (na) - not; प्रवर्तेत् (pravartet) - would proceed; कथञ्चन (kathaṃcana) - in any way;]
(Cows are said to be a limb of sacrifice; sacrifice itself, indeed, O Indra; and by these (cows) even, without (them), sacrifice would not proceed in any way.)
O Indra, cows are called a limb of sacrifice and, indeed, are the sacrifice itself; without them, a sacrifice could not take place in any way. (13-82-16)
धारयन्ति प्रजाश्चैव पयसा हविषा तथा। एतासां तनयाश्चापि कृषियोगमुपासते ॥१३-८२-१७॥
dhārayanti prajāś caiva payasā haviṣā tathā। etāsāṃ tanayāś cāpi kṛṣiyogam upāsate ॥13-82-17॥
[धारयन्ति (dhārayanti) - support; sustain; प्रजाः (prajāḥ) - creatures; beings; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; पयसा (payasā) - by milk; हविषा (haviṣā) - by offering (oblation); तथा (tathā) - thus; also; एतासाम् (etāsām) - of these (fem.); तनयाः (tanayāḥ) - sons; progeny; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; कृषियोगम् (kṛṣiyogam) - agriculture-activity; farming; उपासते (upāsate) - engage in; perform;]
(Support (do) creatures and indeed by milk, by offering also thus. Of these, the sons also engage in the activity of agriculture.)
Creatures are supported indeed by milk and by offerings as well; and the sons of these also undertake the activity of farming. (13-82-17)
जनयन्ति च धान्यानि बीजानि विविधानि च। ततो यज्ञाः प्रवर्तन्ते हव्यं कव्यं च सर्वशः ॥१३-८२-१८॥
janayanti ca dhānyāni bījāni vividhāni ca। tato yajñāḥ pravartante havyaṁ kavyaṁ ca sarvaśaḥ ॥13-82-18॥
[जनयन्ति (janayanti) - they produce; च (ca) - and; धान्यानि (dhānyāni) - grains; बीजानि (bījāni) - seeds; विविधानि (vividhāni) - various; च (ca) - and; ततः (tataḥ) - therefrom; यज्ञाः (yajñāḥ) - sacrifices; प्रवर्तन्ते (pravartante) - proceed; हव्यम् (havyam) - oblation; कव्यम् (kavyam) - offerings to ancestors; च (ca) - and; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - in every way;]
(They indeed produce grains, seeds, various (kinds) also; therefrom sacrifices proceed, oblation, offerings to ancestors also in every way.)
They generate grains and various seeds; from those, sacrifices arise—oblation and ancestor offerings in all manner. (13-82-18)
पयो दधि घृतं चैव पुण्याश्चैताः सुराधिप। वहन्ति विविधान्भारान्क्षुत्तृष्णापरिपीडिताः ॥१३-८२-१९॥

मुनींश्च धारयन्तीह प्रजाश्चैवापि कर्मणा। वासवाकूटवाहिन्यः कर्मणा सुकृतेन च ॥ उपरिष्टात्ततोऽस्माकं वसन्त्येताः सदैव हि ॥१३-८२-२०॥
munīṁś ca dhārayantīha prajāś caiva api karmaṇā। vāsavā-kūṭa-vāhinyaḥ karmaṇā sukṛtena ca ॥ upariṣṭāt tato'smākaṁ vasanty etāḥ sadaiva hi ॥13-82-20॥

(This to you cause, O Śakra, created as a dwelling, today indeed. Of the cows, above the gods indeed, is named, O Śatakratu.)
This, O Śakra, is the reason today for your dwelling being established here. O Śatakratu, it is indeed said that the place of the cows is higher than the gods. (13-82-21)
एता हि वरदत्ताश्च वरदाश्चैव वासव। सौरभ्यः पुण्यकर्मिण्यः पावनाः शुभलक्षणाः ॥१३-८२-२२॥

अदित्यास्तप्यमानायास्तपो घोरं सुदुश्चरम्। पुत्रार्थममरश्रेष्ठ पादेनैकेन नित्यदा ॥१३-८२-२५॥

अलोभकाम्यया देवि तपसा च शुभेन ते। प्रसन्नोऽहं वरं तस्मादमरत्वं ददानि ते ॥१३-८२-३४॥
alobhakāmyayā devi tapasā ca śubhena te। prasanno'haṃ varaṃ tasmādamaratvaṃ dadāni te॥13-82-34॥

trayāṇām api lokānām upariṣṭāt nivatsyasi। matprasādāc ca vikhyāto golokaḥ sa bhaviṣyati॥13-82-35॥

मानुषेषु च कुर्वाणाः प्रजाः कर्म सुतास्तव। निवत्स्यन्ति महाभागे सर्वा दुहितरश्च ते ॥१३-८२-३६॥
mānuṣeṣu ca kurvāṇāḥ prajāḥ karma sutāstava। nivatsyanti mahābhāge sarvā duhitaraśca te ॥13-82-36॥

(Among men and performing offspring action your sons, will dwell, O greatly fortunate one, all your daughters also.)

मनसा चिन्तिता भोगास्त्वया वै दिव्यमानुषाः। यच्च स्वर्गसुखं देवि तत्ते सम्पत्स्यते शुभे ॥१३-८२-३७॥
manasā cintitā bhogās tvayā vai divyamānuṣāḥ। yacc svargasukhaṃ devi tat te sampatsyate śubhe॥13-82-37॥

तस्या लोकाः सहस्राक्ष सर्वकामसमन्विताः। न तत्र क्रमते मृत्युर्न जरा न च पावकः ॥ न दैन्यं नाशुभं किञ्चिद्विद्यते तत्र वासव ॥१३-८२-३८॥
tasyā lokāḥ sahasrākṣa sarvakāmasamanvitāḥ। na tatra kramate mṛtyur na jarā na ca pāvakaḥ ॥ na dainyaṃ nāśubhaṃ kiñcid vidyate tatra vāsava ॥13-82-38॥

तत्र दिव्यान्यरण्यानि दिव्यानि भवनानि च। विमानानि च युक्तानि कामगानि च वासव ॥१३-८२-३९॥

[व्रतैः (vrataiḥ) - by vows; च (ca) - and; विविधैः (vividhaiḥ) - various; पुण्यैः (puṇyaiḥ) - by merits (pious deeds); तथा (tathā) - also; तीर्थ-अनु-सेवनात् (tīrtha-anusevanāt) - from resorting to holy places; तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; महता (mahatā) - great; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; सुकृतेन (sukṛtena) - by good deed; च (ca) - and; कर्मणा (karmaṇā) - by action; शक्यः (śakyaḥ) - possible; समासादयितुम् (samāsādayitum) - to attain; गोलोकः (golokaḥ) - Goloka (the highest world); पुष्कर-एक्षण (puṣkara-īkṣaṇa) - lotus-eyed;]
(By vows and various merits, also from resorting to holy places, by great austerity indeed and by good deed and action, possible to attain Goloka, O lotus-eyed.)
O lotus-eyed, Goloka can be attained by vows, various meritorious acts, resorting to holy places, great austerity, good deeds, and actions. (13-82-40)
एतत्ते सर्वमाख्यातं मया शक्रानुपृच्छते। न ते परिभवः कार्यो गवामरिनिसूदन ॥१३-८२-४१॥
etat te sarvam ākhyātaṁ mayā śakra anupṛcchate। na te paribhavaḥ kāryaḥ gavāmari-ni-sūdana ॥13-82-41॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; ते (te) - to you; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; आख्यातम् (ākhyātam) - told; मया (mayā) - by me; शक्र (śakra) - O Śakra; अनुपृच्छते (anupṛcchate) - having asked; न (na) - not; ते (te) - for you; परिभवः (paribhavaḥ) - disrespect; कार्यः (kāryaḥ) - should be done; गवामरिनिसूदन (gavāmari-ni-sūdana) - O destroyer of the enemies of cows;]
(This to you all told by me, O Śakra, having asked. Not for you disrespect should be done, O destroyer of the enemies of cows.)
All this has been told to you by me upon your asking, O Śakra. You should not commit any disrespect, O destroyer of the enemies of cows. (13-82-41)
भीष्म उवाच॥

एतच्छ्रुत्वा सहस्राक्षः पूजयामास नित्यदा। गाश्चक्रे बहुमानं च तासु नित्यं युधिष्ठिर ॥१३-८२-४२॥
etat śrutvā sahasrākṣaḥ pūjayām āsa nityadā। gāḥ cakre bahumānaṃ ca tāsu nityaṃ yudhiṣṭhira ॥13-82-42॥
[एतच्छ्रुत्वा (etat śrutvā) - having heard this; सहस्राक्षः (sahasrākṣaḥ) - the thousand-eyed one (Indra); पूजयामास (pūjayām āsa) - began to worship; नित्यदा (nityadā) - always; गः (gāḥ) - cows; चक्रे (cakre) - did (made); बहुमानं (bahumānam) - great respect; च (ca) - and; तासु (tāsu) - among them (the cows); नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; युधिष्ठिर (yudhiṣṭhira) - O Yudhisthira;]
(Having heard this, the thousand-eyed one (Indra) began to worship always; (he) did great respect to the cows and always among them, O Yudhishthira.)
Upon hearing this, Indra, the thousand-eyed, always began to worship; he constantly honored the cows among them, O Yudhishthira. (13-82-42)
एतत्ते सर्वमाख्यातं पावनं च महाद्युते। पवित्रं परमं चापि गवां माहात्म्यमुत्तमम् ॥ कीर्तितं पुरुषव्याघ्र सर्वपापविनाशनम् ॥१३-८२-४३॥
etat te sarvam ākhyātaṃ pāvanaṃ ca mahādyute। pavitraṃ paramaṃ cāpi gavāṃ māhātmyam uttamam॥ kīrtitaṃ puruṣavyāghra sarvapāpavināśanam॥13-82-43॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; ते (te) - to you; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; आख्यातम् (ākhyātam) - declared; पावनम् (pāvanam) - purifying; च (ca) - and; महाद्युते (mahādyute) - O greatly resplendent one; पवित्रम् (pavitram) - holy; परमम् (paramam) - supreme; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; गवाम् (gavām) - of cows; माहात्म्यम् (māhātmyam) - greatness; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - highest; कीर्तितम् (kīrtitam) - celebrated; पुरुषव्याघ्र (puruṣavyāghra) - O tiger among men; सर्वपापविनाशनम् (sarvapāpavināśanam) - destroyer of all sins;]
(This to you all declared, purifying and O greatly resplendent one. Holy, supreme and also the highest greatness of cows. Celebrated O tiger among men, destroyer of all sins. (13-82-43))
O greatly resplendent one, all this has been declared to you—purifying, holy, and supremely excellent—the highest greatness of cows, which has been renowned as the destroyer of all sins, O tiger among men. (13-82-43)
य इदं कथयेन्नित्यं ब्राह्मणेभ्यः समाहितः। हव्यकव्येषु यज्ञेषु पितृकार्येषु चैव ह ॥ सार्वकामिकमक्षय्यं पितॄंस्तस्योपतिष्ठति ॥१३-८२-४४॥
ya idaṃ kathayen nityaṃ brāhmaṇebhyaḥ samāhitaḥ। havyakavyeṣu yajñeṣu pitṛkāryeṣu caiva ha॥ sārvakāmikam akṣayyaṃ pitṝṃs tasyopatiṣṭhati॥ 13-82-44॥
[य (ya) - who; इदं (idaṃ) - this; कथयेत् (kathayet) - should recite; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; ब्राह्मणेभ्यः (brāhmaṇebhyaḥ) - to Brāhmaṇas; समाहितः (samāhitaḥ) - attentively; हव्यकव्येषु (havyakavyeṣu) - in oblations to gods and ancestors; यज्ञेषु (yajñeṣu) - in sacrifices; पितृकार्येषु (pitṛkāryeṣu) - in rites for ancestors; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; ह (ha) - verily; सार्वकामिकम् (sārvakāmikam) - fulfilling all desires; अक्षय्यम् (akṣayyaṃ) - imperishable; पितॄन् (pitṝn) - ancestors; तस्य (tasya) - for him; उपतिष्ठति (upatiṣṭhati) - attends; १३-८२-४४ (13-82-44) -;]
(Who this should recite always to Brāhmaṇas attentively; in oblations to gods and ancestors, in sacrifices, in rites for ancestors and indeed verily. All-desire-fulfilling, imperishable ancestors for him attends (13-82-44).)
Whoever always attentively recites this to Brāhmaṇas—at offerings to gods and ancestors, in sacrifices, and in ancestral rites—attains for his ancestors imperishable and all-desire-fulfilling results. (13-82-44)
गोषु भक्तश्च लभते यद्यदिच्छति मानवः। स्त्रियोऽपि भक्ता या गोषु ताश्च कामानवाप्नुयुः ॥१३-८२-४५॥
goṣu bhaktaś ca labhate yady ad icchati mānavaḥ। striyo'pi bhaktā yā goṣu tāś ca kāmān avāpnuyuḥ॥13-82-45॥
[गोषु (goṣu) - in cows; (locative plural of गोः, meaning 'cow'); भक्तः (bhaktaḥ) - devoted; (one who is devoted or a devotee); च (ca) - and; लभते (labhate) - obtains; (3rd person singular, present middle); यत् यत् (yat yat) - whatever; (relative pronoun, each thing which); इच्छति (icchati) - desires; (3rd person singular, present active); मानवः (mānavaḥ) - a human being; (masculine singular); स्त्रियः (striyaḥ) - women; (nominative plural of स्त्री, woman); अपि (api) - also; भक्ताः (bhaktāḥ) - devoted; (feminine plural, those who are devoted); या (yā) - who; (feminine singular, relative pronoun); गोषु (goṣu) - in cows; ताः (tāḥ) - they; (feminine plural pronoun); च (ca) - and; कामान् (kāmān) - desires; (accusative plural of काम, wish/desire); अवाप्नुयुः (avāpnuyuḥ) - may attain; (3rd person plural, optative mood, attain);]
(In cows, the devoted person also obtains whatever a human being desires. Women also who are devoted to cows, they too may attain desires.)
Whoever is devoted to cows obtains whatever desires a human being may have. Likewise, women devoted to cows also attain their wishes. (13-82-45)
पुत्रार्थी लभते पुत्रं कन्या पतिमवाप्नुयात्। धनार्थी लभते वित्तं धर्मार्थी धर्ममाप्नुयात् ॥१३-८२-४६॥
putrārthī labhate putraṃ kanyā patim-avāpnuyāt। dhanārthī labhate vittaṃ dharmārthī dharmam-āpnuyāt॥13-82-46॥
[पुत्रार्थी (putrārthī) - one desiring a son; लभते (labhate) - obtains; पुत्रं (putraṃ) - a son; कन्या (kanyā) - a maiden; पतिम् (patim) - a husband; अवाप्नुयात् (avāpnuyāt) - may attain; धनार्थी (dhanārthī) - one desiring wealth; लभते (labhate) - obtains; वित्तं (vittaṃ) - wealth; धर्मार्थी (dharmārthī) - one desiring dharma; धर्मम् (dharmam) - dharma; आप्नुयात् (āpnuyāt) - may attain;]
(One desiring a son obtains a son. A maiden may attain a husband. One desiring wealth obtains wealth. One desiring dharma may attain dharma. (13-82-46))
He who desires a son obtains a son; a maiden attains a husband; he who seeks wealth gains wealth; and he who seeks righteousness attains righteousness. (13-82-46)
विद्यार्थी प्राप्नुयाद्विद्यां सुखार्थी प्राप्नुयात्सुखम्। न किञ्चिद्दुर्लभं चैव गवां भक्तस्य भारत ॥१३-८२-४७॥
vidyārthī prāpnuyād vidyāṃ sukhārthī prāpnuyāt sukham। na kiñcid durlabhaṃ caiva gavāṃ bhaktasya bhārata ॥13-82-47॥
[विद्यार्थी (vidyārthī) - one who seeks knowledge; प्राप्नुयात् (prāpnuyāt) - may obtain; विद्यां (vidyām) - knowledge; सुखार्थी (sukhārthī) - one who seeks happiness; प्राप्नुयात् (prāpnuyāt) - may obtain; सुखम् (sukham) - happiness; न (na) - not; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; दुर्लभं (durlabham) - difficult to obtain; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; गवां (gavām) - of cows; भक्तस्य (bhaktasya) - of a devotee; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(One who seeks knowledge may obtain knowledge; one who seeks happiness may obtain happiness; nothing indeed is difficult to obtain for a devotee of cows, O Bhārata.)
He who seeks knowledge attains it; he who seeks happiness attains happiness; indeed, O Bhārata, nothing is difficult to obtain for a devotee of cows. (13-82-47)
