ब्राह्मणेभ्यः प्रयच्छन्ति दानानि विविधानि च। दातृप्रतिग्रहीत्रोर्वा को विशेषः पितामह ॥१३-९४-१॥
brāhmaṇebhyaḥ prayacchanti dānāni vividhāni ca. dātṛpratigrahītrorvā ko viśeṣaḥ pitāmaha ॥13-94-1॥

साधोर्यः प्रतिगृह्णीयात्तथैवासाधुतो द्विजः। गुणवत्यल्पदोषः स्यान्निर्गुणे तु निमज्जति ॥१३-९४-२॥
sādhor yaḥ pratigṛhṇīyāt tathāiva asādhuto dvijaḥ । guṇavatyalpadoṣaḥ syān nirguṇe tu nimajjati ॥13-94-2॥
[साधोः (sādhoḥ) - of the virtuous; यः (yaḥ) - who; प्रतिगृह्णीयात् (pratigṛhṇīyāt) - should accept; तथा एव (tathā eva) - just so; असाधुतः (asādhutaḥ) - from the unvirtuous; द्विजः (dvijaḥ) - twice-born (Brahmin); गुणवति (guṇavati) - in one who possesses a good quality; अल्पदोषः (alpa-doṣaḥ) - of little defect; स्यात् (syāt) - may be; निर्गुणे (nirguṇe) - in one without quality; तु (tu) - but; निमज्जति (nimajjati) - sinks;]
(Who from the virtuous should accept, just so from the unvirtuous the twice-born; in one who possesses a good quality, of little defect may be, but in one without quality, (he) sinks.)
A twice-born should accept gifts from the virtuous, but likewise from the unvirtuous; for one with good qualities, a little defect may be tolerated, but in one without a quality, he sinks. (13-94-2)
अत्राप्युदाहरन्तीममितिहासं पुरातनम्। वृषादर्भेश्च संवादं सप्तर्षीणां च भारत ॥१३-९४-३॥

सर्वेषामथ तेषां तु गण्डाभूत्कर्मकारिका। शूद्रः पशुसखश्चैव भर्ता चास्या बभूव ह ॥१३-९४-५॥
sarveṣām atha teṣāṃ tu gaṇḍābhūt-karmakārikā| śūdraḥ paśu-sakhaś caiva bhartā ca asyā babhūva ha ॥13-94-5॥

(Of all, then, of them, but who became as a tumor, female artisan; Śūdra, the friend of the beast indeed, and the husband of her, became indeed.)
Then, among all of them, it was the female artisan who had taken the form of a tumor; the Śūdra, friend of the beast and her husband, was indeed who he became. (13-94-5)
ते वै सर्वे तपस्यन्तः पुरा चेरुर्महीमिमाम्। समाधिनोपशिक्षन्तो ब्रह्मलोकं सनातनम् ॥१३-९४-६॥
te vai sarve tapasyantaḥ purā cerur mahīm imām। samādhinopaśikṣanto brahmalokaṃ sanātanam॥13-94-6॥
[ते (te) - they; वै (vai) - indeed; सर्वे (sarve) - all; तपस्यन्तः (tapasyantaḥ) - practicing austerities; पुरा (purā) - formerly; चेरुः (ceruḥ) - wandered; महीम् (mahīm) - the earth; इमाम् (imām) - this; समाधिना (samādhinā) - with concentration; उपशिक्षन्तः (upaśikṣantaḥ) - studying under; ब्रह्मलोकम् (brahmalokam) - the world of Brahman; सनातनम् (sanātanam) - eternal;]
(They indeed all, practicing austerities, formerly wandered this earth; by concentration, studying under, the eternal world of Brahman.)
They, indeed, all, practicing austerities, once wandered this earth; by means of concentration, studying, they attained the eternal world of Brahman. (13-94-6)
अथाभवदनावृष्टिर्महती कुरुनन्दन। कृच्छ्रप्राणोऽभवद्यत्र लोकोऽयं वै क्षुधान्वितः ॥१३-९४-७॥
athābhavad anāvṛṣṭir mahatī kurunandana। kṛcchraprāṇo 'bhavad yatra loko 'yaṃ vai kṣudhānvitaḥ ॥13-94-7॥
[अथ (atha) - then; अभवत् (abhavat) - there was; अनावृष्टिः (anāvṛṣṭiḥ) - drought; महती (mahatī) - great; कुरुनन्दन (kurunandana) - O descendent of Kuru; कृच्छ्रप्राणः (kṛcchraprāṇaḥ) - with difficulty maintaining life; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; यत्र (yatra) - where; लोकः (lokaḥ) - the people; अयम् (ayam) - these; वै (vai) - indeed; क्षुधान्वितः (kṣudhānvitaḥ) - afflicted with hunger;]
(Then there was a great drought, O Kurunandana. With difficulty maintaining life, where these people indeed were afflicted with hunger.)
Then a great drought occurred, O descendant of Kuru. The people there struggled to survive, all afflicted by hunger. (13-94-7)
कस्मिंश्चिच्च पुरा यज्ञे याज्येन शिबिसूनुना। दक्षिणार्थेऽथ ऋत्विग्भ्यो दत्तः पुत्रो निजः किल ॥१३-९४-८॥
kasmiṃścicca purā yajñe yāj yena śibisūnunā। dakṣiṇārthe'tha ṛtvigbhyo dattaḥ putro nijaḥ kila ॥13-94-8॥
[कस्मिंश्चिच्च (kasmiṃścicca) - once upon a time; some; (in) some (yajña; पुरा (purā) - formerly; long ago; यज्ञे (yajñe) - in a sacrifice; याज्येन (yāj yena) - by the sacrificer; शिबिसूनुना (śibisūnunā) - by the son of Śibi; दक्षिणार्थे (dakṣiṇārthe) - for the purpose of a sacrificial fee; अथ (atha) - then; ऋत्विग्भ्यः (ṛtvigbhyaḥ) - to the priests; दत्तः (dattaḥ) - was given; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - (his own) son; निजः (nijaḥ) - his own; किल (kila) - indeed; so it is said;]
(Once, formerly, in a sacrifice, by the sacrificer, the son of Śibi, for the purpose of a sacrificial fee, then, to the priests, was given, his son, his own, indeed.)
Once long ago, in a sacrifice, the son of Śibi, acting as the sacrificer, indeed gave his own son to the priests as the sacrificial fee. (13-94-8)
तस्मिन्कालेऽथ सोऽल्पायुर्दिष्टान्तमगमत्प्रभो। ते तं क्षुधाभिसन्तप्ताः परिवार्योपतस्थिरे ॥१३-९४-९॥
tasmin kāle 'tha saḥ alpāyuḥ diṣṭāntam agamat prabho। te taṃ kṣudhābhi-santaptāḥ parivārya upatasthire ॥13-94-9॥
[तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; (locative singular of tat) काले (kāle) - time; (locative singular of kāla) अथ (atha) - then; सः (saḥ) - he; अल्पायुः (alpāyuḥ) - of little life; short-lived; दिष्टान्तम् (diṣṭāntam) - end appointed by fate; death; अगमत् (agamat) - reached; (3rd person singular, perfect) प्रभो (prabho) - O lord; ते (te) - they; तम् (tam) - him; क्षुधाभिसन्तप्ताः (kṣudhābhi-santaptāḥ) - scorched by hunger; afflicted by hunger; परिवार्य (parivārya) - having surrounded; उपतस्थिरे (upatasthire) - approached; (3rd person plural, perfect);]
(In that time then he of short life reached the end appointed by fate, O lord. They, scorched by hunger, having surrounded him, approached.)
At that time, O lord, the short-lived man reached his destined end. They, afflicted by hunger, surrounded him and approached. (13-94-9)
याज्यात्मजमथो दृष्ट्वा गतासुमृषिसत्तमाः। अपचन्त तदा स्थाल्यां क्षुधार्ताः किल भारत ॥१३-९४-१०॥
yājyātmajam atho dṛṣṭvā gatāsu ṛṣi-sattamāḥ। apacanta tadā sthālyāṃ kṣudhārtāḥ kila bhārata ॥13-94-10॥
[याज्यात्मजम् (yājyātmajam) - the son of the chief priest; अथ (atha) - then; उ (u) - indeed; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; गतासु (gatāsu) - lifeless; ऋषिसत्तमाः (ṛṣi-sattamāḥ) - the excellent sages; अपचन्त (apacanta) - they cooked; तदा (tadā) - then; स्थाल्याम् (sthālyām) - in a pot; क्षुधार्ताः (kṣudhārtāḥ) - afflicted by hunger; किल (kila) - indeed; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(The excellent sages, then, having seen the son of the chief priest lifeless, cooked (him) then in a pot, afflicted by hunger, indeed, O Bhārata.)
O Bhārata, then, the excellent sages, afflicted by hunger, indeed cooked the son of the chief priest—having seen him lifeless—in a pot. (13-94-10)
निराद्ये मर्त्यलोकेऽस्मिन्नात्मानं ते परीप्सवः। कृच्छ्रामापेदिरे वृत्तिमन्नहेतोस्तपस्विनः ॥१३-९४-११॥
nirādye martyaloke'sminn ātmānaṃ te parīpsavaḥ. kṛcchrām āpedire vṛttim annahetos tapasvinaḥ ॥13-94-11॥
[निराद्ये (nirādye) - in what is devoid of enjoyment; मर्त्यलोके (martyaloke) - in the mortal world; अस्मिन् (asmin) - in this; आत्मानं (ātmānaṃ) - their self; ते (te) - they; परीप्सवः (parīpsavaḥ) - desiring to protect; कृच्छ्राम् (kṛcchrām) - severe; आपेदिरे (āpedire) - undertook; वृत्तिम् (vṛttim) - livelihood; अन्नहेतोः (annahetos) - for the sake of food; तपस्विनः (tapasvinaḥ) - ascetics;]
(In what is devoid of enjoyment, in this mortal world, their self, they, desiring to protect, severe, undertook, livelihood, for the sake of food, ascetics.)
In this enjoymentless mortal world, those ascetics, wishing to preserve their own lives, undertook a severe livelihood just for the sake of food. (13-94-11)
अटमानोऽथ तान्मार्गे पचमानान्महीपतिः। राजा शैब्यो वृषादर्भिः क्लिश्यमानान्ददर्श ह ॥१३-९४-१२॥
aṭamāno’tha tānmārge pacamānānmahīpatiḥ. rājā śaibyo vṛṣādarbhiḥ kliśyamānāndadarśa ha ॥13-94-12॥
[अटमानः (aṭamānaḥ) - wandering; अथ (atha) - then; तान् (tān) - them; मार्गे (mārge) - on the path; पचमानान् (pacamānān) - being tormented (lit. being scorched); महीपतिः (mahīpatiḥ) - the king; राजा (rājā) - the king; शैब्यः (śaibyaḥ) - Śaibya (descendant of Śibi); वृषादर्भिः (vṛṣādarbhiḥ) - Vṛṣādarbhi; क्लिश्यमानान् (kliśyamānān) - suffering; ददर्श (dadarśa) - saw; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(Wandering then them on the path being tormented, the king, King Śaibya, Vṛṣādarbhi, suffering, saw indeed.)
Then, as King Śaibya Vṛṣādarbhi was wandering on the path, he indeed saw them being tormented and suffering. (13-94-12)
वृषादर्भिरुवाच॥

प्रतिग्रहस्तारयति पुष्टिर्वै प्रतिगृह्णताम्। मयि यद्विद्यते वित्तं तच्छृणुध्वं तपोधनाः ॥१३-९४-१३॥
pratigrahas tārayati puṣṭir vai pratigṛhṇatām। mayi yad vidyate vittaṃ tac chṛṇudhvaṃ tapodhanāḥ॥13-94-13॥
[प्रतिग्रहः (pratigrahaḥ) - receipt (of a gift); तारयति (tārayati) - supports; पुष्टिः (puṣṭiḥ) - nourishment; वै (vai) - indeed; प्रतिगृह्णताम् (pratigṛhṇatām) - of those who receive (gifts); मयि (mayi) - in me; यत् (yat) - which; विद्यते (vidyate) - exists; वित्तम् (vittam) - wealth; तत् (tat) - that; शृणुध्वम् (śṛṇudhvam) - you all listen; तपोधनाः (tapodhanāḥ) - ascetics;]
(Receipt (of a gift) supports nourishment indeed of those who receive (gifts). In me which exists wealth, that you all listen, ascetics. (13-94-13))
The acceptance of a gift indeed sustains the nourishment of the receivers. Hear from me what wealth exists; O ascetics. (13-94-13)
प्रियो हि मे ब्राह्मणो याचमानो; दद्यामहं वोऽश्वतरीसहस्रम्। एकैकशः सवृषाः सम्प्रसूताः; सर्वेषां वै शीघ्रगाः श्वेतलोमाः ॥१३-९४-१४॥
priyo hi me brāhmaṇo yācamāno; dadyāmahaṃ vo'śvatarīsahasram। ekaikaśaḥ savṛṣāḥ samprasūtāḥ; sarveṣāṃ vai śīghragāḥ śvetalomāḥ ॥13-94-14॥
[प्रियः (priyaḥ) - dear; हि (hi) - indeed; मे (me) - to me; ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - brahmin; याचमानः (yācamānaḥ) - one who begs; दद्याम् (dadyām) - may I give; अहम् (aham) - I; वः (vaḥ) - to you (all); अश्वतरीसहस्रम् (aśvatarīsahasram) - a thousand mules; एकैकशः (ekaikaśaḥ) - each one; सवृषाः (savṛṣāḥ) - with males; सम्प्रसूताः (samprasūtāḥ) - well born; सर्वेषाम् (sarveṣām) - of all; वै (vai) - indeed; शीघ्रगाः (śīghragāḥ) - quick-moving; श्वेतलोमाः (śvetalomāḥ) - white-haired;]
(Dear indeed to me is the brahmin begging; may I give to you a thousand mules. Each one with males, well born; of all, indeed, quick-moving, white-haired.)
Indeed, the begging brahmin is dear to me; may I grant you a thousand mules. Each one, well bred, with males, quick-moving and white-haired for every one of you. (13-94-14)
कुलम्भराननडुहः शतंशता; न्धुर्याञ्शुभान्सर्वशोऽहं ददानि। पृथ्वीवाहान्पीवरांश्चैव ताव; दग्र्या गृष्ट्यो धेनवः सुव्रताश्च ॥१३-९४-१५॥
kulambharānaḍuhaḥ śataṃśatā; ndhuryāñśubhānsarvaśo'haṃ dadāni. pṛthvīvāhānpīvarāṃścaiva tāva; dagryā gṛṣṭyo dhenavaḥ suvratāśca ॥13-94-15॥
[कुलम्भरान् (kulambharān) - high-backed (bullocks); अनडुहः (aṇaḍuhaḥ) - that do not give milk; शतंशता (śataṃśatā) - hundreds and hundreds; न्धुर्याञ् (ndhuryān) - yoke-fit (draught animals); शुभान् (śubhān) - excellent; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - entirely; अहम् (aham) - I; ददानि (dadāni) - give; पृथ्वीवाहान् (pṛthvīvāhān) - (oxen) that carry loads; पीवरान् (pīvarān) - fat; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; तावद् (tāvad) - as many; अग्र्याः (agryāḥ) - excellent; गृष्ट्यः (gṛṣṭyaḥ) - of cowsheds; productive (cows); धेनवः (dhenavaḥ) - milch-cows; सुव्रताः (suvratāḥ) - well-disciplined; च (ca) - and;]
(High-backed bullocks that do not give milk, hundreds and hundreds; yoke-fit, excellent ones, entirely I give. Load-carrying, fat oxen also as many; excellent, cowshed cows, milch-cows, and well-disciplined ones as well.)
I give away hundreds and hundreds of high-backed bullocks that do not give milk, all the excellent yoke-fit ones. Likewise, I give fat oxen used for carrying loads, and an equal number of excellent, productive, well-disciplined milch-cows. (13-94-15)
वरान्ग्रामान्व्रीहियवं रसांश्च; रत्नं चान्यद्दुर्लभं किं ददानि। मा स्माभक्ष्ये भावमेवं कुरुध्वं; पुष्ट्यर्थं वै किं प्रयच्छाम्यहं वः ॥१३-९४-१६॥
varān grāmān vrīhi-yavaṃ rasāṃś ca; ratnaṃ ca anyat durlabhaṃ kiṃ dadāni. mā sma abhakṣye bhāvam evaṃ kurudhvaṃ; puṣṭy-artham vai kiṃ prayacchāmi ahaṃ vaḥ ॥13-94-16॥
[वरान् (varān) - best ones; desirable things; ग्रामान् (grāmān) - villages; व्रीहि-यवम् (vrīhi-yavam) - rice and barley; रसान् (rasān) - juices; liquids; च (ca) - and; रत्नम् (ratnam) - gem; precious thing; च (ca) - and; अन्यत् (anyat) - other; दुर्लभम् (durlabham) - difficult to obtain; किम् (kim) - what; ददानि (dadāni) - shall I give; मा (mā) - do not; स्म (sma) - indeed; अभक्ष्ये (abhakṣye) - in what is not to be eaten; भावम् (bhāvam) - feeling; एवम् (evam) - thus; कुरुध्वम् (kurudhvam) - do you make; पुष्ट्यर्थम् (puṣṭy-artham) - for the sake of nourishment; वै (vai) - indeed; किम् (kim) - what; प्रयच्छामि (prayacchāmi) - shall I give; shall I offer; अहम् (aham) - I; वः (vaḥ) - to you;]
(Best ones, villages, rice and barley, and juices; gem also, other difficult to obtain, what shall I give? Do not indeed in what is not to be eaten the feeling thus make; for the sake of nourishment indeed, what shall I offer to you?)
What else shall I give—choose villages, rice and barley, juices, gems, or any other rare thing? Do not entertain such a feeling towards that which is inedible; for the sake of your nourishment, tell me, what shall I offer you? (13-94-16)

राजन्प्रतिग्रहो राज्ञो मध्वास्वादो विषोपमः। तज्जानमानः कस्मात्त्वं कुरुषे नः प्रलोभनम् ॥१३-९४-१७॥
rājanpratigraho rājño madhvāsvādo viṣopamaḥ। tajjānamānaḥ kasmāttvaṁ kuruṣe naḥ pralobhanam ॥13-94-17॥
[राजन् (rājan) - O king; प्रतिग्रहो (pratigrahaḥ) - acceptance of gifts; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - for a king; मध्वास्वादः (madhvāsvādaḥ) - taste of honey; विषोपमः (viṣopamaḥ) - like poison; तत् (tat) - that; जानमानः (jānamānaḥ) - knowing; कस्मात् (kasmāt) - why; त्वम् (tvam) - you; कुरुषे (kuruṣe) - do (perform); नः (naḥ) - to us; प्रलोभनम् (pralobhanam) - temptation;]
(O king, acceptance of gifts for a king is the taste of honey, like poison. That knowing, why do you perform temptation to us?)
O king, acceptance of gifts is for a king as sweet as honey, but like poison. Knowing that, why do you tempt us? (13-94-17)
क्षत्रं हि दैवतमिव ब्राह्मणं समुपाश्रितम्। अमलो ह्येष तपसा प्रीतः प्रीणाति देवताः ॥१३-९४-१८॥
kṣatraṃ hi daivatam iva brāhmaṇaṃ samupāśritam। amalo hy eṣa tapasā prītaḥ prīṇāti devatāḥ॥13-94-18॥

अह्नापीह तपो जातु ब्राह्मणस्योपजायते। तद्दाव इव निर्दह्यात्प्राप्तो राजप्रतिग्रहः ॥१३-९४-१९॥

कुशलं सह दानेन राजन्नस्तु सदा तव। अर्थिभ्यो दीयतां सर्वमित्युक्त्वा ते ततो ययुः ॥१३-९४-२०॥
kuśalaṃ saha dānena rājann astu sadā tava। arthibhyo dīyatāṃ sarvam ity uktvā te tato yayuḥ॥13-94-20॥

(Well-being together with charity, O king, may it be always for you. To those who ask, let all be given—having said thus, they then went.)
"May well-being with charity always be yours, O king. Let everything be given to those who request it"—having said this, they then departed. (13-94-20)
अपक्वमेव तन्मांसमभूत्तेषां च धीमताम्। अथ हित्वा ययुः सर्वे वनमाहारकाङ्क्षिणः ॥१३-९४-२१॥
apakvameva tanmāṁsam abhūt teṣāṁ ca dhīmatām. atha hitvā yayuḥ sarve vanam āhārakāṅkṣiṇaḥ ॥13-94-21॥

(Uncooked indeed that meat became of them and of the wise ones. Then, having abandoned (it), all went to the forest desiring food.)

(Teachers'-words thus having understood, then not to be accepted, Atri said. Not indeed, O those with deluded understanding, not indeed, O those with dull intellects. These golden ones, these we know; we have become aware, indeed we are awake. (13-94-24))
Having understood the teachers' words, Atri then said, “These are not to be accepted. Not so, O deluded ones! Not so, O dull-minded ones! We know these golden matters; having awakened, we are indeed alert.” (13-94-24)
इह ह्येतदुपादत्तं प्रेत्य स्यात्कटुकोदयम्। अप्रतिग्राह्यमेवैतत्प्रेत्य चेह सुखेप्सुना ॥१३-९४-२५॥

(Here indeed this taken, after death may become bitter result. Not to be accepted indeed this, after death and here by one desiring happiness.)
Here, indeed, that which is received may result in bitterness after death. This should certainly not be accepted, either after death or here, by one seeking happiness. (13-94-25)

(Whatever rice and barley, gold, cattle, women are on earth, all that is not sufficient for one person; therefore, the wise man should seek tranquillity.)

The horn of a beast, once born, keeps growing as the animal grows. In the same way, a person's desire has no limit. (13-94-28)

(Not in that world substance exists which world might completely fill. Ocean-like man not ever is filled.)
There is no such substance in that world capable of filling the world. A man like the ocean is never satisfied. (13-94-29)

(In the receiving of gifts, restraint indeed, austerity supports, certainly. That wealth of the Brāhmaṇa here, of the one being tempted, flows away.)
When receiving gifts, restraint is indeed supported certainly by austerity. Here, the wealth of the Brāhmaṇa who is being tempted flows away. (13-94-31)

(For the sake of dharma, accumulation which indeed of substances is approved by the side; accumulation of austerity indeed here is distinguished than accumulation of substances.)
The accumulation of wealth for the sake of dharma, though approved by men, is surpassed here by the accumulation of austerity; the accumulation of austerity is superior to the accumulation of substances. (13-94-32)
गण्डोवाच॥

(From the fierce one, from here, from fear, because of which these my lords are afraid; those who are more powerful, like the weak, I am afraid, I, from this, beyond.)
Because of the fear arising from this fierce one, these lords of mine are afraid; even those more powerful than I am, like the weak, I too am afraid of that which is beyond this. (13-94-33)
पशुसख उवाच॥

(Which indeed, in dharma, supreme is not, Brāhmaṇas that wealth know. For the sake of humility, the very learned one should be served, as so.)
Which indeed is unsurpassed in dharma, that the Brāhmaṇas know as true wealth. For the sake of humility, one should serve the truly learned, in any way. (13-94-34)
ऋषय ऊचुः॥

[इति (iti) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having said; हेमगर्भाणि (hemagarbhāṇi) - (the) golden-inside; हित्वा (hitvā) - having abandoned; तानि (tāni) - those; फलानि (phalāni) - fruits; ते (te) - they; ऋषयः (ṛṣayaḥ) - the sages; जग्मुः (jagmuḥ) - went; अन्यत्र (anyatra) - elsewhere; सर्वे (sarve) - all; एव (eva) - indeed; धृतव्रताः (dhṛtavratāḥ) - firm in their vows;]
(Thus having said, having abandoned the golden-inside fruits, they—the sages—went elsewhere, all indeed firm in their vows.)
After thus having spoken, the sages, all steadfast in their vows, abandoned those golden-inside fruits and went elsewhere. (13-94-36)
मन्त्रिणः ऊचुः॥

The ministers said.
उपधिं शङ्कमानास्ते हित्वेमानि फलानि वै। ततोऽन्येनैव गच्छन्ति विदितं तेऽस्तु पार्थिव ॥१३-९४-३७॥
upadhiṁ śaṅkamānās te hitvā imāni phalāni vai। tato’nyenaiva gacchanti viditaṁ te’stu pārthiva॥13-94-37॥
[उपधिं (upadhiṁ) - the consideration; शङ्कमानाः (śaṅkamānāḥ) - suspecting; ते (te) - they; हित्वा (hitvā) - abandoning; इमानि (imāni) - these; फलानि (phalāni) - fruits; वै (vai) - indeed; ततः (tataḥ) - then; अन्येन (anyena) - by another; एव (eva) - only; गच्छन्ति (gacchanti) - they go; विदितं (viditam) - known; ते (te) - to you; अस्तु (astu) - let it be; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - O king;]
(Suspecting the consideration, they, abandoning these fruits indeed, then by another only go; let it be known to you, O king.)
Those, suspecting the intention, abandon these fruits and as a result move on by another path; let this be known to you, O king. (13-94-37)
इत्युक्तः स तु भृत्यैस्तैर्वृषादर्भिश्चुकोप ह। तेषां सम्प्रतिकर्तुं च सर्वेषामगमद्गृहम् ॥१३-९४-३८॥
ityuktaḥ sa tu bhṛtyais tair vṛṣādarbhiś cukopa ha। teṣāṃ sampratikartuṃ ca sarveṣām agamad gṛham ॥13-94-38॥
[इति उक्तः (iti uktaḥ) - thus spoken to; स (sa) - he; तु (tu) - but; भृत्यैः तैः (bhṛtyaiḥ taiḥ) - by those attendants; वृषादर्भिः (vṛṣādarbhiḥ) - by Vṛṣādarbhi; चुकोप (cukopa) - became angry; ह (ha) - indeed; तेषां (teṣām) - of them; सम्प्रतिकर्तुं (sampratikartuṃ) - to retaliate; च (ca) - and; सर्वेषाम् (sarveṣām) - of all; अगमत् (agamad) - he went; गृहम् (gṛham) - to the house;]
(Thus having been spoken to, he, but by those attendants, by Vṛṣādarbhi, became angry indeed. Of them to retaliate and of all, he went to the house.)
Thus, when spoken to in this way by those attendants, Vṛṣādarbhi became angry. To retaliate against all of them, he went to his house. (13-94-38)
स गत्वाहवनीयेऽग्नौ तीव्रं नियममास्थितः। जुहाव संस्कृतां मन्त्रैरेकैकामाहुतिं नृपः ॥१३-९४-३९॥
sa gatvāhavanīye'gnau tīvraṃ niyamamāsthitaḥ। juhāva saṃskṛtāṃ mantrairekaikāmāhutiṃ nṛpaḥ ॥13-94-39॥
[स (sa) - he; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; आहवनीये (āhavanīye) - in the āhavanīya (sacrificial) fire; अग्नौ (agnau) - in the fire; तीव्रं (tīvraṃ) - intense; नियमम् (niyamam) - vow; आस्थितः (āsthitaḥ) - having undertaken; जुहाव (juhāva) - offered as oblation; संस्कृताम् (saṃskṛtām) - purified; मन्त्रैः (mantraiḥ) - with mantras; एकैकाम् (ekaikām) - each one; आहितिम् (āhutiṃ) - offering; नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - the king;]
(He, having gone to the āhavanīya fire, having undertaken an intense vow, offered each purified oblation with mantras, the king.)

[तस्मात् (tasmāt) - from that; अग्नेः (agneḥ) - of Agni; समुत्तस्थौ (samuttasthau) - arose; कृत्या (kṛtyā) - the female embodiment of harmful sorcery; लोकभयङ्करी (lokabhayaṅkarī) - causing fear in the world; तस्या (tasyā) - her; नाम (nāma) - name; वृषादर्भिः (vṛṣādarbhiḥ) - Vṛṣādarbhi; यातुधानी (yātudhānī) - yātudhānī (female demon); इति (iti) - thus; अथ (atha) - then; अकरोत् (akarot) - made;]
(From that Agni arose the kṛtyā, causing fear in the world. Her name Vṛṣādarbhi made as 'yātudhānī', thus then made.)
From Agni there arose a kṛtyā, a being who brought terror to the world. Vṛṣādarbhi then gave her the name 'yātudhānī'. (13-94-40)
सा कृत्या कालरात्रीव कृताञ्जलिरुपस्थिता। वृषादर्भिं नरपतिं किं करोमीति चाब्रवीत् ॥१३-९४-४१॥
sā kṛtyā kālarātrīva kṛtāñjalir-upasthitā। vṛṣādarbhim narapatiṃ kiṃ karomīti cābravīt ॥13-94-41॥
[सा (sā) - she; कृत्या (kṛtyā) - kṛtyā (a female personification of black magic); कालरात्री-इव (kālarātrī-iva) - like the night of destruction (Kālarātrī); कृताञ्जलिः (kṛtāñjaliḥ) - with joined palms; उपस्थिता (upasthitā) - appeared; वृषादर्भिम् (vṛṣādarbhim) - Vṛṣādarbhī (proper noun, the queen's name); नरपतिम् (narapatim) - the king; किं (kiṃ) - what; करोमि (karomi) - shall I do; इति (iti) - thus; च (ca) - and; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - she said;]
(She, kṛtyā, like Kālarātrī, with joined palms appeared; to Vṛṣādarbhī, the king, "What shall I do?" thus also she said.)
Kṛtyā, appearing like the night of destruction Kālarātrī with folded hands, stood before the king Vṛṣādarbhī and said, "What shall I do?" (13-94-41)

ṛṣīṇāṃ gaccha saptānāmarundhatyāstathaiva ca. dāsībhartuśca dāsyāśca manasā nāma dhāraya ॥13-94-42॥
[ऋषीणां (ṛṣīṇām) - of the seers; गच्छ (gaccha) - group; सप्तानाम् (saptānām) - of the seven; अरुन्धत्याः (arundhatyāḥ) - of Arundhati; तथैव (tathaiva) - just so; च (ca) - and; दासीभर्तुः (dāsībhartuḥ) - of the husband of the female servant; च (ca) - and; दास्याः (dāsyāḥ) - of the female servant; च (ca) - and; मनसा (manasā) - with the mind; नाम (nāma) - the name; धारय (dhāraya) - hold;]
(Of the seers, the group of seven, of Arundhati just so and; of the husband of the female servant and of the female servant and; with the mind, hold the name.)
Mentally hold the names of the group of seven seers, of Arundhati, as well as those of the husband and the female servant. (13-94-42)
ज्ञात्वा नामानि चैतेषां सर्वानेतान्विनाशय। विनष्टेषु यथा स्वैरं गच्छ यत्रेप्सितं तव ॥१३-९४-४३॥
jñātvā nāmāni caiteṣāṁ sarvānetānvināśaya। vinaṣṭeṣu yathā svairaṁ gaccha yatrepśitaṁ tava॥13-94-43॥
[ज्ञात्वा (jñātvā) - having known; नामानि (nāmāni) - names; च (ca) - and; एतेषां (eteṣām) - of these; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; एतान् (etān) - these; विनाशय (vināśaya) - destroy; विनष्टेषु (vinaṣṭeṣu) - when destroyed; यथा (yathā) - as; स्वैरम् (svairam) - freely; गच्छ (gaccha) - go; यत्र (yatra) - where; इप्सितं (ipsitaṁ) - desired; तव (tava) - by you;]
(Having known the names and all these, destroy these all. When destroyed, as freely, go where desired by you.)
After learning the names and all of these, destroy every one of them. Once they are destroyed, you may freely go wherever you wish. (13-94-43)
सा तथेति प्रतिश्रुत्य यातुधानी स्वरूपिणी। जगाम तद्वनं यत्र विचेरुस्ते महर्षयः ॥१३-९४-४४॥
sā tatheti pratiśrutya yātudhānī svarūpiṇī। jagāma tad vanaṃ yatra vicerus te maharṣayaḥ॥13-94-44॥
[सा (sā) - she; तथेति (tatheti) - so be it thus; प्रतिश्रुत्य (pratiśrutya) - having promised; यातुधानी (yātudhānī) - demoness; स्वरूपिणी (svarūpiṇī) - assuming (her) own form; जगाम (jagāma) - went; तद्वनम् (tad vanam) - that forest; यत्र (yatra) - where; विचेरुः (viceruḥ) - roamed; ते (te) - those; महर्षयः (maharṣayaḥ) - great sages;]
(She, saying "so be it," having promised, the demoness assuming her own form, went to that forest where those great sages roamed.)
She, saying "so be it" and having promised, the demoness in her own form went to that forest where the great sages wandered. (13-94-44)
