गार्हस्थ्यं धर्ममखिलं प्रब्रूहि भरतर्षभ। ऋद्धिमाप्नोति किं कृत्वा मनुष्य इह पार्थिव ॥१३-१००-१॥
gārhasthyaṃ dharmam-akhilaṃ prabrūhi bharatarṣabha। ṛddhim-āpnoti kiṃ kṛtvā manuṣya iha pārthiva॥13-100-1॥

O best of the Bharatas, expound the entire duty of the householder; what should a man do here, O King, to attain prosperity? (13-100-1)

atra te vartayiṣyāmi purāvṛttaṃ janādhipa। vāsudevasya saṃvādaṃ pṛthivyāścaiva bhārata ॥13-100-2॥

Here, O king, I shall tell you the ancient event—the conversation between Vāsudeva and the earth, O Bhārata. (13-100-2)
संस्तूय पृथिवीं देवीं वासुदेवः प्रतापवान्। पप्रच्छ भरतश्रेष्ठ यदेतत्पृच्छसेऽद्य माम् ॥१३-१००-३॥
saṁstūya pṛthivīṁ devīṁ vāsudevaḥ pratāpavān। papraccha bharataśreṣṭha yad etat pṛcchase'dya mām॥13-100-3॥

(Having praised the earth goddess, the powerful Vāsudeva, O best of the Bharatas, asked what this you ask me today.)
Having offered praise to the earth goddess, the mighty Vāsudeva asked me today about that which you inquire, O best of the Bharatas. (13-100-3)

गार्हस्थ्यं धर्ममाश्रित्य मया वा मद्विधेन वा। किमवश्यं धरे कार्यं किं वा कृत्वा सुखी भवेत् ॥१३-१००-४॥
gārhasthyaṃ dharmam āśritya mayā vā mad-vidhena vā। kim avaśyaṃ dhare kāryaṃ kiṃ vā kṛtvā sukhī bhavet॥13-100-4॥
[गार्हस्थ्यं (gārhasthyam) - household life; धर्मम् (dharmam) - duty; आश्रित्य (āśritya) - having resorted to; मया (mayā) - by me; वा (vā) - or; मद्विधेन (mad-vidhena) - by one like me; वा (vā) - or; किम् (kim) - what; अवश्यं (avaśyam) - necessarily; धरे (dhare) - one should bear; कार्यं (kāryam) - action; किं (kiṃ) - or what; वा (vā) - or; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; सुखी (sukhī) - happy; भवेत् (bhavet) - may become;]
(Having resorted to household duty, by me or by one like me, what action should necessarily be borne? Or having done what, may one become happy?)
Having adopted the duties of householder, either by myself or by one like me, what action must certainly be performed, or by doing what can one become happy? (13-100-4)
पृथिव्युवाच॥

ऋषयः पितरो देवा मनुष्याश्चैव माधव। इज्याश्चैवार्चनीयाश्च यथा चैवं निबोध मे ॥१३-१००-५॥
ṛṣayaḥ pitaro devā manuṣyāścaiva mādhava। ijyāścaivārcanīyāśca yathā caivaṁ nibodha me ॥13-100-5॥
[ऋषयः (ṛṣayaḥ) - sages; पितरः (pitaro) - ancestors; देवाः (devāḥ) - gods; मनुष्याः (manuṣyāḥ) - humans; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; माधव (mādhava) - O Mādhava; इज्याः (ijyāḥ) - objects of worship; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; अर्चनीयाः (arcanīyāḥ) - to be honored; च (ca) - and; यथा (yathā) - as; च (ca) - and; एवम् (evam) - thus; निबोध (nibodha) - understand; मे (me) - from me;]
(Sages, ancestors, gods, humans also indeed, O Mādhava, objects of worship and indeed to be honored also, as and thus, understand from me.)
O Mādhava, sages, ancestors, gods, and humans are indeed objects of worship and to be honored; just so—understand this from me. (13-100-5)
सदा यज्ञेन देवांश्च आतिथ्येन च मानवान्। छन्दतश्च यथानित्यमर्हान्युञ्जीत नित्यशः ॥ तेन ह्यृषिगणाः प्रीता भवन्ति मधुसूदन ॥१३-१००-६॥
sadā yajñena devāṁś ca ātithyena ca mānavān। chandataś ca yathā nityam ar'hān yuñjīta nityaśaḥ॥ tena hy ṛṣigaṇāḥ prītā bhavanti madhusūdana॥ 13-100-6॥
[सदा (sadā) - always; यज्ञेन (yajñena) - by sacrifice; देवान् (devān) - the gods; च (ca) - and; आतिथ्येन (ātithyena) - by hospitality; च (ca) - and; मानवान् (mānavān) - men (humans); छन्दतः (chandataḥ) - willingly; च (ca) - and; यथा (yathā) - as; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; अर्हान् (ar'hān) - worthy ones; युञ्जीत (yuñjīta) - one should engage; नित्यशः (nityaśaḥ) - always; तेन (tena) - by that; हि (hi) - indeed; ऋषिगणाः (ṛṣigaṇāḥ) - groups of sages; प्रीताः (prītāḥ) - become pleased; भवन्ति (bhavanti) - they become; मधुसूदन (madhusūdana) - O Madhusūdana;]
(Always by sacrifice, (one should engage) the gods and by hospitality, men. And willingly, as always, one should engage the worthy ones continually. By that indeed the groups of sages become pleased, O Madhusūdana. (13-100-6))
One should always worship the gods by sacrifice and men by hospitality, and at all times joyfully serve the worthy ones. Through this, O Madhusūdana, the groups of sages become pleased. (13-100-6)
नित्यमग्निं परिचरेदभुक्त्वा बलिकर्म च। कुर्यात्तथैव देवा वै प्रीयन्ते मधुसूदन ॥१३-१००-७॥
nityam agniṃ paricared abhuktvā balikarma ca। kuryāt tathaiva devā vai prīyante madhusūdana ॥13-100-7॥
[नित्यम् (nityam) - always; अग्निम् (agniṃ) - fire (accusative singular); परिचरेत् (paricaret) - one should attend; अभुक्त्वा (abhuktvā) - without having eaten; बलिकर्म (balikarma) - the act of offering oblations; च (ca) - and; कुर्यात् (kuryāt) - one should perform; तथा एव (tathaiva) - in the same manner; देवाः (devāḥ) - the gods; वै (vai) - indeed; प्रीयन्ते (prīyante) - are pleased; मधुसूदन (madhusūdana) - O Madhusūdana;]
(Always, one should attend to the fire, without having eaten, and also perform the act of offering oblations. In the same manner, the gods, indeed, are pleased, O Madhusūdana.)
O Madhusūdana, one should always tend the fire without having eaten and perform the offering of oblations likewise; thus, indeed, the gods are pleased. (13-100-7)
कुर्यादहरहः श्राद्धमन्नाद्येनोदकेन वा। पयोमूलफलैर्वापि पितॄणां प्रीतिमाहरन् ॥१३-१००-८॥
kuryād aharahaḥ śrāddham annādyena udakena vā। payo-mūla-phalair vā api pitṝṇām prītim āharan ॥13-100-8॥
[कुर्यात् (kuryāt) - (one) should perform; अहरहः (aharahaḥ) - every day; श्राद्धम् (śrāddham) - śrāddha rite; अन्नाद्येन (annādyena) - with food and edibles; उदकेन (udakena) - with water; वा (vā) - or; पयः-मूल-फलैः (payo-mūla-phalaiḥ) - with milk, roots, and fruits; वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - even; पितॄणाम् (pitṝṇām) - of ancestors; प्रीतिम् (prītim) - satisfaction; आहरन् (āharan) - bringing (about);]
(One should perform the śrāddha every day with food and edibles, with water or even with milk, roots, and fruits, bringing satisfaction to the ancestors.)

[सिद्धान्नात् (siddhānnāt) - from prepared food; वैश्वदेवम् (vaiśvadevam) - the Vaiśvadeva offering; वै (vai) - indeed; कुर्यात् (kuryāt) - one should perform; अग्नौ (agnau) - in the fire; यथाविधि (yathāvidhi) - according to the rule; अग्नीषोमम् (agnīṣomam) - the Agnīṣoma (offering); वैश्वदेवम् (vaiśvadevam) - the Vaiśvadeva (offering); धान्वन्तर्यम् (dhānvantaryam) - the Dhanvantari (offering); अनन्तरम् (anantaram) - immediately after;]
(From prepared food, the Vaiśvadeva indeed should one perform in the fire according to the rule. Agnīṣoma, Vaiśvadeva, Dhanvantari immediately after.)
From prepared food, one should perform the Vaiśvadeva offering in the fire according to rule; then Agnīṣoma, Vaiśvadeva, and Dhanvantari offerings, one after another. (13-100-9)
प्रजानां पतये चैव पृथग्घोमो विधीयते। तथैव चानुपूर्व्येण बलिकर्म प्रयोजयेत् ॥१३-१००-१०॥
prajānāṃ pataye caiva pṛthag-ghomo vidhīyate। tathaiva cānupūrvyeṇa balikarma prayojayet ॥13-100-10॥
[प्रजानाम् (prajānām) - of beings; (genitive plural of prajā; पतये (pataye) - to the lord; (dative singular of pati; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; पृथक् (pṛthak) - separately; होमः (homaḥ) - offering; oblation; विधीयते (vidhīyate) - is prescribed; तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; च (ca) - and; अनुपूर्व्येण (anupūrvyeṇa) - in due order; sequentially; बलिकर्म (balikarma) - the act of offering oblation; प्रयोजयेत् (prayojayet) - one should perform; (causative, third person singular, optative mood;]
(For the lord of beings indeed, separately, the homa is prescribed. In the same way, and in due order, one should perform the bali-ritual.)

दक्षिणायां यमायेह प्रतीच्यां वरुणाय च। सोमाय चाप्युदीच्यां वै वास्तुमध्ये द्विजातये ॥१३-१००-११॥
dakṣiṇāyāṃ yamāyeha pratīcyāṃ varuṇāya ca । somāya cāpyudīcyāṃ vai vāstu-madhye dvijātaye ॥13-100-11॥
[दक्षिणायाम् (dakṣiṇāyām) - in the south; यमाय (yamāya) - to Yama; इह (iha) - here; प्रतीच्याम् (pratīcyām) - in the west; वरुणाय (varuṇāya) - to Varuṇa; च (ca) - and; सोमाय (somāya) - to Soma; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; उदीच्याम् (udīcyām) - in the north; वै (vai) - certainly; वास्तुमध्ये (vāstu-madhye) - in the middle of the dwelling; द्विजातये (dvijātaye) - to the twice-born;]
(In the south, to Yama here, in the west to Varuṇa and, to Soma also in the north certainly, in the center of the dwelling to the twice-born.)
In the south one should offer to Yama here, in the west to Varuṇa, in the north indeed to Soma, and in the middle of the dwelling to the twice-born. (13-100-11)
धन्वन्तरेः प्रागुदीच्यां प्राच्यां शक्राय माधव। मनोर्वै इति च प्राहुर्बलिं द्वारे गृहस्य वै ॥ मरुद्भ्यो देवताभ्यश्च बलिमन्तर्गृहे हरेत् ॥१३-१००-१२॥
dhanvantarēḥ prāgudīcyāṁ prācyāṁ śakrāya mādhava। manorvai iti ca prāhur baliṁ dvārē gṛhasya vai ॥ marudbhyō dēvatābhyaś ca balim antar gṛhē harēt ॥13-100-12॥
[धन्वन्तरेः (dhanvantarēḥ) - of Dhanvantari; प्रागुदीच्यां (prāgudīcyāṁ) - in the northeast; प्राच्यां (prācyāṁ) - in the east; शक्राय (śakrāya) - to Śakra (Indra); माधव (mādhava) - O Mādhava; मनोर् (manor) - of Manu; वै (vai) - indeed; इति (iti) - thus; च (ca) - and; प्राहुः (prāhuḥ) - they say; बलिम् (balim) - offering; द्वारे (dvāre) - at the door; गृहस्य (gṛhasya) - of the house; वै (vai) - indeed; मरुद्भ्यः (marudbhyaḥ) - to the Maruts; देवताभ्यः (dēvatābhyaḥ) - to the deities; च (ca) - and; बलिम् (balim) - offering; अन्तर्गृहे (antar-gṛhe) - inside the house; हरेत् (harēt) - should offer;]
(Of Dhanvantari in the northeast, in the east to Śakra, O Mādhava, of Manu indeed, thus also they say, offering at the door of the house indeed. To the Maruts, to the deities and offering inside the house should offer. (13-100-12))
O Mādhava, they say the offering at the door of the house should be made to Dhanvantari in the northeast, to Śakra in the east, and to Manu. One should offer the offering inside the house to the Maruts and other deities. (13-100-12)
तथैव विश्वेदेवेभ्यो बलिमाकाशतो हरेत्। निशाचरेभ्यो भूतेभ्यो बलिं नक्तं तथा हरेत् ॥१३-१००-१३॥
tathaiva viśvedevebhyo balim ākāśataḥ haret। niśācarebhyo bhūtebhyo baliṁ naktaṁ tathā haret॥13-100-13॥
[तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same manner; विश्वेदेवेभ्यः (viśvedevebhyaḥ) - to the Viśve-devas; बलिम् (balim) - oblations; आकाशतः (ākāśataḥ) - from (towards) the sky; हरेत् (haret) - he should offer; निशाचरेभ्यः (niśācarebhyaḥ) - to the night-wanderers; भूतेभ्यः (bhūtebhyaḥ) - to the spirits; बलिम् (balim) - oblations; नक्तम् (naktam) - at night; तथा (tathā) - likewise; हरेत् (haret) - he should offer;]
(In the same manner, to the Viśve-devas, oblations from (towards) the sky he should offer. To the night-wanderers, to the spirits, oblations at night likewise he should offer.)
In the same way, he should offer oblations to the Viśve-devas by casting them into the sky. Likewise, at night, he should offer oblations to night-wanderers and spirits. (13-100-13)
एवं कृत्वा बलिं सम्यग्दद्याद्भिक्षां द्विजातये। अलाभे ब्राह्मणस्याग्नावग्रमुत्क्षिप्य निक्षिपेत् ॥१३-१००-१४॥
evaṁ kṛtvā baliṁ samyag dadyād bhikṣāṁ dvijātaye। alābhe brāhmaṇasya agnau agram utkṣipya nikṣipet॥13-100-14॥
[एवं (evaṁ) - thus; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; बलिं (baliṁ) - offering; सम्यक् (samyak) - properly; दद्यात् (dadyāt) - should give; भिक्षाम् (bhikṣām) - alms; द्विजातये (dvijātaye) - to a twice-born; अलाभे (alābhe) - in the absence; ब्राह्मणस्य (brāhmaṇasya) - of a Brāhmaṇa; अग्नौ (agnau) - in the fire; अग्रम् (agram) - the chief (part); उत्क्षिप्य (utkṣipya) - having raised; निक्षिपेत् (nikṣipet) - should deposit;]
(Thus having done the offering properly, one should give alms to a twice-born. In the absence of a Brāhmaṇa, having raised the chief part, one should deposit it in the fire.)
Having thus made the offering in the proper manner, one should give alms to a twice-born; but if a Brāhmaṇa is not found, one should take the chief portion and deposit it in the fire. (13-100-14)
यदा श्राद्धं पितृभ्यश्च दातुमिच्छेत मानवः। तदा पश्चात्प्रकुर्वीत निवृत्ते श्राद्धकर्मणि ॥१३-१००-१५॥
yadā śrāddhaṃ pitṛbhyaś ca dātum icchet mānavaḥ। tadā paścāt prakurvīta nivṛtte śrāddhakarmaṇi ॥13-100-15॥
[यदा (yadā) - when; श्राद्धं (śrāddham) - the śrāddha (ancestral rite); पितृभ्यः (pitṛbhyaḥ) - to the ancestors; च (ca) - and; दातुम् (dātum) - to give; इच्छेत् (icchet) - desires; मानवः (mānavaḥ) - the man; तदा (tadā) - then; पश्चात् (paścāt) - afterwards; प्रकुर्वीत (prakurvīta) - should perform; निवृत्ते (nivṛtte) - when completed; श्राद्धकर्मणि (śrāddhakarmaṇi) - in the ritual of śrāddha;]
(When the man desires to give śrāddha to the ancestors and, then afterwards, should perform (something) when the śrāddha ritual is completed.)
When a man wishes to offer śrāddha to the ancestors, he should then perform the subsequent rites after the completion of the śrāddha ceremony. (13-100-15)
पितॄन्सन्तर्पयित्वा तु बलिं कुर्याद्विधानतः। वैश्वदेवं ततः कुर्यात्पश्चाद्ब्राह्मणवाचनम् ॥१३-१००-१६॥
pitṝn santarpayitvā tu baliṁ kuryād vidhānataḥ। vaiśvadevaṁ tataḥ kuryāt paścād brāhmaṇavācanam॥13-100-16॥
[पितॄन् (pitṝn) - ancestors; सन्तर्पयित्वा (santarpayitvā) - having satisfied; तु (tu) - however; बलिं (baliṁ) - offering; कुर्यात् (kuryāt) - should perform; विधानतः (vidhānataḥ) - according to rule; वैश्वदेवम् (vaiśvadevam) - Vaiśvadeva (rite/offering); ततः (tataḥ) - then; कुर्यात् (kuryāt) - should perform; पश्चात् (paścāt) - afterwards; ब्राह्मणवाचनम् (brāhmaṇavācanam) - recitation by a Brāhmaṇa;]
(Having satisfied the ancestors, however, one should perform the offering according to the rule; then one should perform the Vaiśvadeva, afterwards the recitation by a Brāhmaṇa.)
After satisfying the ancestors, one should perform the offering as prescribed; then the Vaiśvadeva should be performed, and afterwards the Brāhmaṇa recitation. (13-100-16)
ततोऽन्नेनावशेषेण भोजयेदतिथीनपि। अर्चापूर्वं महाराज ततः प्रीणाति मानुषान् ॥१३-१००-१७॥
tato'nnenāvaśeṣeṇa bhojayed atithīn api। arcāpūrvaṃ mahārāja tataḥ prīṇāti mānuṣān॥13-100-17॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; from that point; अन्नेन (annena) - with food; अवशेषेण (avaśeṣeṇa) - with the remaining; by the residue; भोजयेत् (bhojayet) - he should cause to eat; should feed; अतिथीन् (atithīn) - guest(s); अपि (api) - also; अर्चा (arcā) - worship; पूर्वं (pūrvaṃ) - before; previously; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; ततः (tataḥ) - then; after that; प्रीणाति (prīṇāti) - pleases; gratifies; मानुषान् (mānuṣān) - men; people;]
(Then with the remaining food he should feed the guests also; before the worship, O great king, then he pleases men.)
Then, O great king, with the remaining food he should also feed the guests; by this (ritual), before the worship, he thus pleases people. (13-100-17)
अनित्यं हि स्थितो यस्मात्तस्मादतिथिरुच्यते। आचार्यस्य पितुश्चैव सख्युराप्तस्य चातिथेः। इदमस्ति गृहे मह्यमिति नित्यं निवेदयेत् ॥१३-१००-१९॥
anityaṃ hi sthito yasmāttasmādatithirucyate। ācāryasya pituścaiva sakhyurāptasya cātitheḥ। idamasti gṛhe mahyamitinityaṃ nivedayet॥13-100-19॥
[अनित्यं (anityaṃ) - not permanent; impermanent; हि (hi) - indeed; स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - staying; यस्मात् (yasmāt) - because; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; अतिथि: (atithiḥ) - guest; (lit. one without a fixed time); उच्यते (ucyate) - is called; आचार्यस्य (ācāryasya) - of teacher; पितुः (pituḥ) - of father; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; सख्युः (sakhyuḥ) - of friend; आप्तस्य (āptasya) - of trusted person; च (ca) - and; अतिथेः (atitheḥ) - of the guest; इदम् (idam) - this; अस्ति (asti) - is; गृहे (gṛhe) - in the house; मयि (mayi) - for me; इति (iti) - thus; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; निवेदयेत् (nivedayet) - one should inform;]
(Because the guest is impermanent (not staying permanently), therefore he is called 'atithi'; of the teacher, the father, also the friend, the trusted person, and the guest, one should always report, "This is in the house for me.")
Because the guest stays only temporarily, he is called an 'atithi'. For the teacher, the father, the friend, the trusted person, and the guest, one should always state, "This is in my house." (13-100-19)
ते यद्वदेयुस्तत्कुर्यादिति धर्मो विधीयते। गृहस्थः पुरुषः कृष्ण शिष्टाशी च सदा भवेत् ॥१३-१००-२०॥
te yad vadeyus tat kuryād iti dharmo vidhīyate। gṛhasthaḥ puruṣaḥ kṛṣṇa śiṣṭāśī ca sadā bhavet॥13-100-20॥
[ते (te) - they; यद् (yad) - what; वदेयुः (vadeyuḥ) - might say; तत् (tat) - that; कुर्याद् (kuryāt) - should do; इति (iti) - thus; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - duty; विधीयते (vidhīyate) - is enjoined; गृहस्थः (gṛhasthaḥ) - householder; पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - man; कृष्ण (kṛṣṇa) - pure (clean); शिष्टाशी (śiṣṭāśī) - eater of food left by the noble; च (ca) - and; सदा (sadā) - always; भवेत् (bhavet) - should be;]
(They what might say, that should do, thus duty is enjoined. The householder man pure eater of food left by the noble and always should be. (13-100-20))
Duty is enjoined as: a person should do what they might say. The householder should always be pure, and should eat food left by the noble. (13-100-20)
राजर्त्विजं स्नातकं च गुरुं श्वशुरमेव च। अर्चयेन्मधुपर्केण परिसंवत्सरोषितान् ॥१३-१००-२१॥
rājartr̥vijaṃ snātakaṃ ca guruṃ śvaśurameva ca। arcayen madhuparkeṇa parisaṃvatsaroṣitān ॥13-100-21॥
[राजन् (rājan) - king; ऋत्विजम् (ṛtvijam) - priest officiating at a sacrifice; स्नातकम् (snātakam) - one who has completed Vedic studies; च (ca) - and; गुरुम् (gurum) - teacher; श्वशुरम् (śvaśuram) - father-in-law; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and; अर्चयेत् (arcayet) - should honor; मधुपर्केण (madhuparkeṇa) - with madhuparka (honey-mixture offering); परि-संवत्सर-उषितान् (pari-saṃvatsara-uṣitān) - those who have lived (away) for a year;]
(King, priest at sacrifice, initiated student, and teacher, father-in-law indeed and; should honor with madhuparka those who have lived (away) for a year.)
One should honor with the madhuparka offering the king, the officiating priest, the initiated graduate, the teacher, and the father-in-law—provided they have stayed away for a year. (13-100-21)
श्वभ्यश्च श्वपचेभ्यश्च वयोभ्यश्चावपेद्भुवि। वैश्वदेवं हि नामैतत्सायम्प्रातर्विधीयते ॥१३-१००-२२॥
śvabhyaś ca śvapacebhyaś ca vayobhyaś ca āvapet bhuvi। vaiśvadevaṃ hi nāma etat sāyam-prātar vidhīyate ॥13-100-22॥
[श्वभ्यः (śvabhyaḥ) - to dogs; च (ca) - and; श्वपचेभ्यः (śvapacebhyaḥ) - to those who eat dogs (outcastes); च (ca) - and; वयोभ्यः (vayobhyaḥ) - to birds; च (ca) - and; आवपेत् (āvapet) - should cast; भुवि (bhuvi) - on the ground; वैश्वदेवम् (vaiśvadevam) - Vaiśvadeva oblation; हि (hi) - indeed; नाम (nāma) - by name; एतत् (etat) - this; सायम् (sāyam) - in the evening; प्रातर् (prātar) - in the morning; विधीयते (vidhīyate) - is prescribed;]
(To dogs and to those who eat dogs and to birds also, one should cast (the oblation) on the ground; this, indeed, is called Vaiśvadeva, prescribed in the evening and morning.)
Offerings should be cast on the ground for dogs, outcastes, and birds; this is called the Vaiśvadeva rite, and it is prescribed at evening and morning. (13-100-22)
एतांस्तु धर्मान्गार्हस्थान्यः कुर्यादनसूयकः। स इहर्द्धिं परां प्राप्य प्रेत्य नाके महीयते ॥१३-१००-२३॥
etāṃs tu dharmān gārhasthān yaḥ kuryād anasūyakaḥ. sa iha ṛddhiṃ parāṃ prāpya pretya nāke mahīyate ॥13-100-23॥
[एतान् (etān) - these; तु (tu) - but; धर्मान् (dharmān) - duties; गार्हस्थान् (gārhasthān) - of the householder; यः (yaḥ) - who; कुर्यात् (kuryāt) - would perform; असूयकः (anasūyakaḥ) - without envy; सः (sa) - he; इह (iha) - here; ऋद्धिं (ṛddhiṃ) - prosperity; पराम् (parām) - supreme; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having attained; प्रेत्य (pretya) - after departing; नाके (nāke) - in heaven; महीयते (mahīyate) - is honored;]
(But these duties of the householder who would perform without envy, he here prosperity supreme having attained, after departing in heaven is honored.)
But whoever performs these duties of a householder without envy attains supreme prosperity here, and after death is honored in heaven. (13-100-23)
भीष्म उवाच॥

[भीष्म (bhīṣma) - the terrible one; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]

Bhīṣma said.
इति भूमेर्वचः श्रुत्वा वासुदेवः प्रतापवान्। तथा चकार सततं त्वमप्येवं समाचर ॥१३-१००-२४॥
iti bhūmer vacaḥ śrutvā vāsudevaḥ pratāpavān. tathā cakāra satataṃ tvam apy evaṃ samācara ॥13-100-24॥
[इति (iti) - thus; भूमेः (bhūmeḥ) - of Bhūmi (Earth); वचः (vacaḥ) - speech; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; वासुदेवः (vāsudevaḥ) - Vāsudeva; प्रतापवान् (pratāpavān) - the mighty; तथा (tathā) - in that manner; चकार (cakāra) - did; सततम् (satataṃ) - always; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अपि (api) - also; एवम् (evam) - thus; समाचर (samācara) - act;]
(Thus, Bhūmi's speech having heard, Vāsudeva the mighty, in that manner did always. You also thus act.)
Having heard the words of Bhūmi, the mighty Vāsudeva acted accordingly always. You too should act in this manner. (13-100-24)
एवं गृहस्थधर्मं त्वं चेतयानो नराधिप। इहलोके यशः प्राप्य प्रेत्य स्वर्गमवाप्स्यसि ॥१३-१००-२५॥
evaṃ gṛhasthadharmaṃ tvaṃ cetayāno narādhipa। ihaloke yaśaḥ prāpya pretya svargam avāpsyasi ॥13-100-25॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; गृहस्थधर्मं (gṛhasthadharmaṃ) - the householder's duty; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; चेतयानः (cētayānaḥ) - practicing; being mindful; नराधिप (narādhipa) - O king; इहलोके (ihaloke) - in this world; यशः (yaśaḥ) - fame; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having attained; प्रेत्य (pretya) - having passed away; स्वर्गम् (svargam) - heaven; अवाप्स्यसि (avāpsyasi) - you will attain;]
(Thus, the householder's duty you, practicing, O king, in this world fame having attained, having passed away heaven you will attain.)
O king, if you practice the duty of a householder in this way, you will attain fame in this world and, after passing away, you will reach heaven. (13-100-25)
