ārāmāṇāṃ taḍāgānāṃ yatphalaṃ kurunandana। tadahaṃ śrotumicchāmi tvatto'dya bharatarṣabha ॥13-99-1॥

O delight of the Kurus, I desire to hear from you today what is the fruit of gardens and ponds, O best of the Bharatas. (13-99-1)

सुप्रदर्शा वनवती चित्रधातुविभूषिता। उपेता सर्वबीजैश्च श्रेष्ठा भूमिरिहोच्यते ॥१३-९९-२॥
supradarśā vanavatī citradhātuvibhūṣitā। upetā sarvabījaiś ca śreṣṭhā bhūmir iho cyate॥13-99-2॥
[सुप्रदर्शा (supradarśā) - very clear; वनवती (vanavatī) - possessing forests; चित्रधातुविभूषिता (citradhātuvibhūṣitā) - adorned with variegated minerals; उपेता (upetā) - endowed with; सर्वबीजैश्च (sarvabījaiś ca) - and with all seeds; श्रेष्ठा (śreṣṭhā) - the best; भूमिः (bhūmiḥ) - earth; इह (iha) - here; उच्यते (ucyate) - is called;]

Here, the earth, which is very clear, covered with forests, adorned with diverse minerals, endowed with all seeds, and the best, is so called. (13-99-2)
तस्याः क्षेत्रविशेषं च तडागानां निवेशनम्। औदकानि च सर्वाणि प्रवक्ष्याम्यनुपूर्वशः ॥१३-९९-३॥
tasyāḥ kṣetra-viśeṣaṃ ca taḍāgānāṃ niveśanam | audakāni ca sarvāṇi pravakṣyāmy-anupūrvaśaḥ ॥13-99-3॥

तडागानां च वक्ष्यामि कृतानां चापि ये गुणाः। त्रिषु लोकेषु सर्वत्र पूजितो यस्तडागवान् ॥१३-९९-४॥
ṭaḍāgānāṃ ca vakṣyāmi kṛtānāṃ cāpi ye guṇāḥ। triṣu lokeṣu sarvatra pūjito yastaḍāgavān॥13-99-4॥
[तडागानां (ṭaḍāgānāṃ) - of ponds; च (ca) - and; वक्ष्यामि (vakṣyāmi) - I shall declare; कृतानां (kṛtānāṃ) - of those constructed; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; ये (ye) - which; गुणाः (guṇāḥ) - qualities; त्रिषु (triṣu) - in the three; लोकेषु (lokeṣu) - worlds; सर्वत्र (sarvatra) - everywhere; पूजितः (pūjitaḥ) - honored; यः (yaḥ) - who; तडागवान् (ṭaḍāgavān) - possessor of a pond;]

I shall describe also the qualities of constructed ponds; everywhere in the three worlds, the possessor of a pond is honored. (13-99-4)
अथ वा मित्रसदनं मैत्रं मित्रविवर्धनम्। कीर्तिसञ्जननं श्रेष्ठं तडागानां निवेशनम् ॥१३-९९-५॥
atha vā mitrasadanaṃ maitraṃ mitravivardhanam। kīrtisañjananaṃ śreṣṭhaṃ taḍāgānāṃ niveśanam ॥13-99-5॥
[अथ (atha) - now; then; वा (vā) - or; मित्रसदनम् (mitrasadanam) - abode of friend; मैत्रम् (maitram) - friendly; मित्रविवर्धनम् (mitravivardhanam) - increase of friendship; कीर्तिसञ्जननम् (kīrtisañjananam) - cause of fame; श्रेष्ठम् (śreṣṭham) - best; superior; तडागानाम् (taḍāgānām) - of ponds; निवेशनम् (niveśanam) - construction; habitation;]
(Now or abode of friend, friendly, increase of friendship, cause of fame, the best, of ponds, construction.)
Or, the abode of a friend, built with friendliness, promoting the increase of friendship, and causing fame, is the best construction of ponds. (13-99-5)
धर्मस्यार्थस्य कामस्य फलमाहुर्मनीषिणः। तडागं सुकृतं देशे क्षेत्रमेव महाश्रयम् ॥१३-९९-६॥
dharmasyārthasya kāmasya phalam āhur manīṣiṇaḥ। taḍāgaṃ sukṛtaṃ deśe kṣetram eva mahāśrayam ॥13-99-6॥
[धर्मस्य (dharmasya) - of dharma; अर्थस्य (arthasya) - of artha; कामस्य (kāmasya) - of kāma; फलम् (phalam) - fruit; आहुः (āhuḥ) - they say; मनीषिणः (manīṣiṇaḥ) - the wise; तडागम् (taḍāgam) - pond; सुकृतम् (sukṛtam) - well-made; देशे (deśe) - in a region; क्षेत्रम् (kṣetram) - field; एव (eva) - only; महाश्रयम् (mahāśrayam) - great support;]
(Of dharma, of artha, of kāma, fruit the wise say. Pond well-made in a region, field only great support.)
The wise say that the fruit of dharma, artha, and kāma is a well-constructed pond in a region—such a field alone is a great support. (13-99-6)
चतुर्विधानां भूतानां तडागमुपलक्षयेत्। तडागानि च सर्वाणि दिशन्ति श्रियमुत्तमाम् ॥१३-९९-७॥
caturvidhānāṃ bhūtānāṃ taḍāgam-upalakṣayet। taḍāgāni ca sarvāṇi diśanti śriyam-uttamām ॥13-99-7॥
[चतुर्विधानां (caturvidhānām) - of four kinds; भूतानां (bhūtānām) - of beings; तडागम् (taḍāgam) - pool; pond; उपलक्षयेत् (upalakṣayet) - one should observe; तडागानि (taḍāgāni) - ponds; च (ca) - and; सर्वाणि (sarvāṇi) - all; दिशन्ति (diśanti) - grant; श्रियम् (śriyam) - prosperity; उत्तमाम् (uttamām) - supreme;]
(Of four kinds of beings, one should observe the pond. And all ponds grant supreme prosperity.)
One should observe the pond for the four kinds of beings. All ponds bestow the highest prosperity. (13-99-7)
देवा मनुष्या गन्धर्वाः पितरोरगराक्षसाः। स्थावराणि च भूतानि संश्रयन्ति जलाशयम् ॥१३-९९-८॥
devā manuṣyā gandharvāḥ pitaroragarākṣasāḥ। sthāvarāṇi ca bhūtāni saṁśrayanti jalāśayam॥13-99-8॥
[देवा (devā) - gods; मनुष्या (manuṣyā) - humans; गन्धर्वाः (gandharvāḥ) - gandharvas; पितरः (pitaraḥ) - ancestors; उरग (uraga) - serpents; राक्षसाः (rākṣasāḥ) - rākṣasas; स्थावराणि (sthāvarāṇi) - immobile beings; च (ca) - and; भूतानि (bhūtāni) - beings; संश्रयन्ति (saṁśrayanti) - resort to; जलाशयम् (jalāśayam) - reservoir of water;]
(Gods, humans, gandharvas, ancestors, serpents, rākṣasas, immobile beings and beings resort to the reservoir of water.)
Gods, humans, gandharvas, ancestors, serpents, rākṣasas, immobile beings, and all creatures seek refuge in the reservoir of water. (13-99-8)
तस्मात्तांस्ते प्रवक्ष्यामि तडागे ये गुणाः स्मृताः। या च तत्र फलावाप्तिरृषिभिः समुदाहृता ॥१३-९९-९॥
tasmāttāṃste pravakṣyāmi taḍāge ye guṇāḥ smṛtāḥ। yā ca tatra phalāvāptirṛṣibhiḥ samudāhṛtā ॥13-99-9॥
[तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; ताँस् (tāṃs) - those (qualities); ते (te) - to you; प्रवक्ष्यामि (pravakṣyāmi) - I shall state; तडागे (taḍāge) - in a pond; ये (ye) - which; गुणाः (guṇāḥ) - qualities; स्मृताः (smṛtāḥ) - are mentioned (remembered); या (yā) - which; च (ca) - and; तत्र (tatra) - there; फलावाप्तिः (phalāvāptiḥ) - fruit-attainment; ऋषिभिः (ṛṣibhiḥ) - by sages; समुदाहृता (samudāhṛtā) - is declared;]
(Therefore those I to you shall state in a pond which qualities are mentioned; which and there fruit-attainment by sages is declared.)
Therefore, I shall declare to you those qualities remembered of a pond, and the results that have been stated there by the sages. (13-99-9)
वर्षमात्रे तडागे तु सलिलं यस्य तिष्ठति। अग्निहोत्रफलं तस्य फलमाहुर्मनीषिणः ॥१३-९९-१०॥
varṣamātre taḍāge tu salilaṃ yasya tiṣṭhati। agnihotraphalaṃ tasya phalam āhur manīṣiṇaḥ ॥13-99-10॥
[वर्षमात्रे (varṣamātre) - in the space of a year; तडागे (taḍāge) - in a pond; तु (tu) - but; सलिलं (salilaṃ) - water; यस्य (yasya) - of which; तिष्ठति (tiṣṭhati) - remains; अग्निहोत्रफलं (agnihotraphalaṃ) - the fruit of Agnihotra (Vedic fire offering); तस्य (tasya) - of that (person); फलम् (phalam) - result; आाहुः (āhuḥ) - they declare; मनीषिणः (manīṣiṇaḥ) - the wise;]
(In a pond, if water remains for a year, the wise declare the fruit of Agnihotra as the result of that (person).)
If in a pond water remains for a whole year, the wise declare that its owner obtains the fruit of an Agnihotra sacrifice. (13-99-10)
शरत्काले तु सलिलं तडागे यस्य तिष्ठति। गोसहस्रस्य स प्रेत्य लभते फलमुत्तमम् ॥१३-९९-११॥
śaratkāle tu salilaṃ taḍāge yasya tiṣṭhati। gosahasrasya sa pretya labhate phalamuttamam॥13-99-11॥
[शरत्काले (śaratkāle) - in the autumn season; तु (tu) - but; सलिलं (salilaṃ) - water; तडागे (taḍāge) - in a pond; यस्य (yasya) - whose; तिष्ठति (tiṣṭhati) - remains; गोसहस्रस्य (gosahasrasya) - of a thousand cows; स (sa) - he; प्रेत्य (pretya) - after death; लभते (labhate) - obtains; फलम् (phalam) - fruit; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - supreme; ॥१३-९९-११॥ (॥13-99-11॥) -;]
(But in autumn season, water in a pond, whose remains, of a thousand cows, he after death obtains supreme fruit.)
But in the autumn season, whoever has water remaining in a pond obtains after death the supreme fruit equal to (the merit of gifting) a thousand cows. (13-99-11)
हेमन्तकाले सलिलं तडागे यस्य तिष्ठति। स वै बहुसुवर्णस्य यज्ञस्य लभते फलम् ॥१३-९९-१२॥
hemantakāle salilaṃ taḍāge yasya tiṣṭhati। sa vai bahusuvarṇasya yajñasya labhate phalam ॥13-99-12॥
[हेमन्तकाले (hemantakāle) - in the hemanta (early winter) season; सलिलं (salilaṃ) - water; तडागे (taḍāge) - in (a) pond; यस्य (yasya) - whose; तिष्ठति (tiṣṭhati) - remains; स (sa) - he; वै (vai) - indeed; बहुसुवर्णस्य (bahusuvarṇasya) - of much gold; यज्ञस्य (yajñasya) - of sacrifice; लभते (labhate) - obtains; फलम् (phalam) - fruit;]
(In the hemanta season, water in a pond which remains — he indeed obtains the fruit of a sacrifice of much gold.)
Whoever in whose pond water remains during the hemanta (early winter) season, he indeed obtains the fruit of a sacrifice made with much gold. (13-99-12)
यस्य वै शैशिरे काले तडागे सलिलं भवेत्। अग्निष्टोमस्य यज्ञस्य फलमाहुर्मनीषिणः ॥१३-९९-१३॥
yasya vai śaiśire kāle taḍāge salilaṁ bhavet। agniṣṭomasya yajñasya phalam āhur manīṣiṇaḥ ॥13-99-13॥
[यस्य (yasya) - of whose; वै (vai) - indeed; शैशिरे (śaiśire) - in the cold season; काले (kāle) - in the time; तडागे (taḍāge) - in the pond; सलिलं (salilaṁ) - water; भवेत् (bhavet) - may be; अग्निष्टोमस्य (agniṣṭomasya) - of Agniṣṭoma; यज्ञस्य (yajñasya) - of the sacrifice; फलम् (phalam) - fruit; आहुः (āhuḥ) - (they) say; मनीषिणः (manīṣiṇaḥ) - the wise;]
(Of whose indeed in the cold season in the time in the pond water may be, of Agniṣṭoma sacrifice the fruit the wise say.)
The wise say that the fruit of the Agniṣṭoma sacrifice belongs to one whose pond has water in the cold season. (13-99-13)
तडागं सुकृतं यस्य वसन्ते तु महाश्रयम्। अतिरात्रस्य यज्ञस्य फलं स समुपाश्नुते ॥१३-९९-१४॥
taḍāgaṃ sukṛtaṃ yasya vasanté tu mahāśrayam। atirātrasya yajñasya phalaṃ sa samupāśnute॥13-99-14॥
[तडागं (taḍāgam) - pond; सुकृतं (sukṛtam) - well-made; यस्य (yasya) - whose; वसन्ते (vasanté) - reside; तु (tu) - but; महाश्रयम् (mahāśrayam) - great shelter; अतिरात्रस्य (atirātrasya) - of atirātra (a long sacrificial rite); यज्ञस्य (yajñasya) - of sacrifice; फलं (phalam) - fruit; स (sa) - he; समुपाश्नुते (samupāśnute) - fully attains;]
(He whose pond is well-made, in which great beings dwell, but attains the fruit of the atirātra sacrifice.)
He whose well-made pond provides great shelter to living beings attains the fruit of the atirātra sacrifice. (13-99-14)
निदाघकाले पानीयं तडागे यस्य तिष्ठति। वाजपेयसमं तस्य फलं वै मुनयो विदुः ॥१३-९९-१५॥
nidāghakāle pānīyaṃ taḍāge yasya tiṣṭhati। vājapeyasamaṃ tasya phalaṃ vai munayo viduḥ॥13-99-15॥
[निदाघकाले (nidāghakāle) - in the hot season; पानीयं (pānīyaṃ) - water; तडागे (taḍāge) - in the pond; यस्य (yasya) - whose; तिष्ठति (tiṣṭhati) - remains; वाजपेयसमं (vājapeyasamaṃ) - equal to a Vājapeya (sacrifice); तस्य (tasya) - of him; फलं (phalaṃ) - fruit (result); वै (vai) - indeed; मुनयः (munayaḥ) - the sages; विदुः (viduḥ) - know;]
(In the hot season, water which remains in the pond—whose (it is), its fruit is indeed known by the sages to be equal to a Vājapeya sacrifice.)
The sages declare that when water remains in a pond during the hot season, the merit gained by the owner is equal to that of performing a Vājapeya sacrifice. (13-99-15)
स कुलं तारयेत्सर्वं यस्य खाते जलाशये। गावः पिबन्ति पानीयं साधवश्च नराः सदा ॥१३-९९-१६॥
sa kulaṃ tārayet sarvaṃ yasya khāte jalāśaye। gāvaḥ pibanti pānīyaṃ sādhavaś ca narāḥ sadā ॥13-99-16॥
[स (sa) - he; कुलं (kulaṃ) - family; तारयेत् (tārayet) - would cross over; would save; सर्वं (sarvaṃ) - entire; all; यस्य (yasya) - whose; खाते (khāte) - in the pit; in the tank; जलाशये (jalāśaye) - in the reservoir; in the pond; गावः (gāvaḥ) - cows; पिबन्ति (pibanti) - drink; पानीयं (pānīyaṃ) - water; साधवः (sādhavaḥ) - the virtuous; च (ca) - and; नराः (narāḥ) - men; people; सदा (sadā) - always;]
(He entire family would save whose in the pit reservoir cows drink water, the virtuous and men always.)
He whose pit or reservoir supplies water that is always drunk by cows, virtuous people, and men—his entire family is saved. (13-99-16)
तडागे यस्य गावस्तु पिबन्ति तृषिता जलम्। मृगपक्षिमनुष्याश्च सोऽश्वमेधफलं लभेत् ॥१३-९९-१७॥
taḍāge yasya gāvastu pibanti tṛṣitā jalam। mṛgapakṣimanuṣyāśca so'śvamedhaphalaṃ labheta ॥13-99-17॥
[तडागे (taḍāge) - in the pond; यस्य (yasya) - of whom; गावः (gāvaḥ) - cows; तु (tu) - but; indeed; पिबन्ति (pibanti) - drink; तृषिताः (tṛṣitāḥ) - thirsty; जलम् (jalam) - water; मृगपक्षिमनुष्याः (mṛgapakṣimanuṣyāḥ) - deer, birds, and men; च (ca) - and; सः (saḥ) - he; अश्वमेधफलम् (aśvamedhaphalam) - the fruit of the horse-sacrifice; लभेत् (labheta) - may obtain;]
(In the pond, of whom cows indeed, thirsty, drink water; deer, birds, and men also; he may obtain the fruit of the horse-sacrifice.)
He, in whose pond thirsty cows, deer, birds, and men drink water, obtains the fruit of the horse-sacrifice. (13-99-17)
यत्पिबन्ति जलं तत्र स्नायन्ते विश्रमन्ति च। तडागदस्य तत्सर्वं प्रेत्यानन्त्याय कल्पते ॥१३-९९-१८॥
yat pibanti jalaṃ tatra snāyante viśramanti ca। taḍāgadasya tat sarvaṃ pretyānantyāya kalpate ॥13-99-18॥
[यत्पिबन्ति (yat pibanti) - which drink; जलं (jalaṃ) - water; तत्र (tatra) - there; स्नायन्ते (snāyante) - bathe; विश्रमन्ति (viśramanti) - rest; च (ca) - and; तडागदस्य (taḍāgadasya) - of the pond; तत्सर्वं (tat sarvaṃ) - all that; प्रेत्य (pretya) - after death; अनन्त्याय (anantyāya) - for endlessness; कल्पते (kalpate) - is fit;]
(Which water they drink there, bathe, and rest—and all that of the pond, after death, is fit for endlessness.)
Whatever water is drunk, bathed in, and rested by beings there—all of that belonging to the pond, after death, leads to endless (reward or benefit). (13-99-18)
दुर्लभं सलिलं तात विशेषेण परत्र वै। पानीयस्य प्रदानेन प्रीतिर्भवति शाश्वती ॥१३-९९-१९॥
durlabhaṃ salilaṃ tāta viśeṣeṇa paratra vai। pānīyasya pradānena prītir bhavati śāśvatī ॥13-99-19॥
[दुर्लभं (durlabham) - difficult to obtain; rare; सलिलं (salilam) - water; तात (tāta) - dear one; (O son; father; affectionate address); विशेषेण (viśeṣeṇa) - especially; particularly; परत्र (paratra) - in the hereafter; in the next world; वै (vai) - indeed; पानीयस्य (pānīyasya) - of (drinking) water; प्रदानेन (pradānena) - by giving; by offering; प्रीतिर्भवति (prītir bhavati) - affection arises; happiness arises; शाश्वती (śāśvatī) - eternal; perpetual;]
(Rare is water, O dear one, especially in the hereafter indeed. By the giving of water, an eternal affection arises.)
Water is rare, O dear one, especially in the next world. By offering water, everlasting benefit or affection is obtained. (13-99-19)
तिलान्ददत पानीयं दीपान्ददत जाग्रत। ज्ञातिभिः सह मोदध्वमेतत्प्रेतेषु दुर्लभम् ॥१३-९९-२०॥
tilān dadata pānīyaṃ dīpān dadata jāgrata. jñātibhiḥ saha modadhvam etat preteṣu durlabham ॥13-99-20॥

(Sesame seeds give, water, lamps give, be awake. With relatives together rejoice, this among the dead is difficult to obtain.)
Give sesame seeds, water, and lamps; stay awake. Rejoice together with your relatives, for this is difficult to obtain among the dead. (13-99-20)
सर्वदानैर्गुरुतरं सर्वदानैर्विशिष्यते। पानीयं नरशार्दूल तस्माद्दातव्यमेव हि ॥१३-९९-२१॥
sarvadanair gurutaraṃ sarvadanair viśiṣyate. pānīyaṃ naraśārdūla tasmād dātavyam eva hi ॥13-99-21॥
[सर्वदानैः (sarvadanaiḥ) - than all gifts; गुरुतरं (gurutaram) - more weighty; सर्वदानैः (sarvadanaiḥ) - than all gifts; विशिष्यते (viśiṣyate) - excels; पानीयं (pānīyam) - water; नरशार्दूल (naraśārdūla) - O best of men; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; दातव्यम् (dātavyam) - must be given; एव (eva) - indeed; हि (hi) - certainly;]

O best of men, water excels and is more weighty than all gifts; therefore, it must certainly be given. (13-99-21)
एवमेतत्तडागेषु कीर्तितं फलमुत्तमम्। अत ऊर्ध्वं प्रवक्ष्यामि वृक्षाणामपि रोपणे ॥१३-९९-२२॥

[किंनर (kiṁnara) - kinnara; semi-divine beings; spirit-like beings; उरग (uraga) - serpent; nāga (mythical serpent); रक्षांसि (rakṣāṁsi) - rākṣasas; demons; देवगन्धर्वमानवाः (devagandharvamānavāḥ) - devas; gods; gandharvas; celestial musicians; mānavāḥ; humans; तथा (tathā) - so; likewise; thus; ऋषिगणाः (ṛṣigaṇāḥ) - ascetic sages; groups of rishis; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; even; संश्रयन्ति (saṁśrayanti) - take refuge in; resort to; seek shelter; महीरुहान् (mahīruhān) - trees; great plants;]
(Kinnaras, uragas, rakṣasas, devas, gandharvas, mānavas; so also groups of ṛṣis and indeed (they) take refuge in trees.)

पुष्पिताः फलवन्तश्च तर्पयन्तीह मानवान्। वृक्षदं पुत्रवद्वृक्षास्तारयन्ति परत्र च ॥१३-९९-३०॥

(Blooming, bearing fruit and satisfying here humans, the trees giving trees like sons, trees cause (one) to cross over in the other world and.)
Trees that are blooming and bearing fruit satisfy people here, and just like sons, the trees one has given (or planted) help one cross over to the next world as well. (13-99-30)
तस्मात्तडागे वृक्षा वै रोप्याः श्रेयोर्थिना सदा। पुत्रवत्परिपाल्याश्च पुत्रास्ते धर्मतः स्मृताः ॥१३-९९-३१॥
tasmāttadāge vṛkṣā vai ropyāḥ śreyorthinā sadā। putravatparipālyāśca putrāste dharmataḥ smṛtāḥ ॥13-99-31॥
