कथं स वै विपन्नश्च कथं वै पातितो भुवि। कथं चानिन्द्रतां प्राप्तस्तद्भवान्वक्तुमर्हति ॥१३-१०३-१॥
kathaṁ sa vai vipannaś ca kathaṁ vai pātito bhuvi। kathaṁ cā-nindratāṁ prāptas tad bhavān vaktum arhati॥13-103-1॥
[कथं (kathaṁ) - how; स (sa) - he; वै (vai) - indeed; विपन्नः (vipannaḥ) - fallen; ruined; च (ca) - and; कथं (kathaṁ) - how; वै (vai) - indeed; पातितः (pātitaḥ) - caused to fall; thrown down; भुवि (bhuvi) - on the earth; कथं (kathaṁ) - how; च (ca) - and; अनिन्द्रताम् (a-nindratām) - non-Indra-hood; state other than being Indra; प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - attained; reached; तत् (tat) - that; भवान् (bhavān) - you (honorific); वक्तुम् (vaktum) - to tell; to speak; अर्हति (arhati) - is worthy; ought;]
(How he indeed has fallen and how indeed he was thrown down on earth, how and (he) attained a state other than Indrahood, that you ought to tell.)
"How, indeed, did he fall and how was he thrown down to earth? And how did he attain to a state other than Indrahood? This, you ought to explain." (13-103-1)

एवं तयोः संवदतोः क्रियास्तस्य महात्मनः। सर्वा एवाभ्यवर्तन्त या दिव्या याश्च मानुषाः ॥ सर्वास्तस्य समुत्पन्ना देवराज्ञो महात्मनः ॥१३-१०३-३॥
evaṁ tayoḥ saṁvadatoḥ kriyās tasya mahātmanaḥ। sarvā evābhyavartanta yā divyā yāś ca mānuṣāḥ॥ sarvāḥ tasya samutpannā devarājño mahātmanaḥ॥13-103-3॥

(Thus, while those two were conversing, all acts of him, the great-souled one, indeed occurred—whatever are divine and whatever are human. All arose for him, the great-souled king of the gods.)

देवलोके नृलोके च सदाचारा बुधैः स्मृताः। ते चेद्भवन्ति राजेन्द्र ऋध्यन्ते गृहमेधिनः ॥ धूपप्रदानैर्दीपैश्च नमस्कारैस्तथैव च ॥१३-१०३-४॥
devaloke nṛloke ca sadācārā budhaiḥ smṛtāḥ। te ced bhavanti rājendra ṛdhyante gṛhamedhinaḥ॥ dhūpapradānair dīpaiś ca namaskāraiḥ tathaiva ca॥13-103-4॥
[देवलोके (devaloke) - in the world of the gods; नृलोके (nṛloke) - in the world of men; च (ca) - and; सदाचारा (sadācārāḥ) - good conduct(s); बुधैः (budhaiḥ) - by the wise; स्मृताः (smṛtāḥ) - are remembered; ते (te) - they; चेत् (cet) - if; भवन्ति (bhavanti) - exist; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; ऋध्यन्ते (ṛdhyante) - prosper; गृहमेधिनः (gṛhamedhinaḥ) - householders; धूपप्रदानैः (dhūpapradānaiḥ) - by offerings of incense; दीपैः (dīpaiḥ) - by lamps; च (ca) - and; नमस्कारैः (namaskāraiḥ) - by obeisances; तथैव (tathaiva) - just so; च (ca) - and;]
(In the world of the gods and in the world of men, good conducts are remembered by the wise. If they exist, O king, householders prosper by offerings of incense, by lamps, and by obeisances, just so and.)
In the worlds of both gods and men, good conduct is regarded by the wise. If these exist, O King, householders prosper by offerings of incense, lamps, and proper reverence. (13-103-4)
यथा सिद्धस्य चान्नस्य द्विजायाग्रं प्रदीयते। बलयश्च गृहोद्देशे अतः प्रीयन्ति देवताः ॥१३-१०३-५॥
yathā siddhasya cānnasya dvijāyāgraṃ pradīyate। balayaś ca gṛhuddeśe ataḥ prīyanti devatāḥ॥13-103-5॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; सिद्धस्य (siddhasya) - of the prepared; च (ca) - and; अन्नस्य (annasya) - of food; द्विजाय (dvijāya) - to the twice-born; आग्रं (āgram) - the best portion; प्रदीयते (pradīyate) - is given; बलयः (balayaḥ) - oblations; च (ca) - and; गृह (gṛha) - house; उद्देशे (uddeśe) - at the place of; अतः (ataḥ) - therefore; प्रीयन्ति (prīyanti) - are pleased; देवताः (devatāḥ) - the deities;]
(Just as of the prepared food, and the best portion is given to the twice-born, and offerings at the place of the house; therefore are pleased the deities.)

यथा च गृहिणस्तोषो भवेद्वै बलिकर्मणा। तथा शतगुणा प्रीतिर्देवतानां स्म जायते ॥१३-१०३-६॥
yathā ca gṛhiṇas toṣo bhaved vai balikarmaṇā। tathā śataguṇā prītir devatānāṁ sma jāyate ॥13-103-6॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; च (ca) - and; गृहिणः (gṛhiṇaḥ) - of the householder; तोषः (toṣaḥ) - satisfaction; भवेत् (bhavet) - arises; वै (vai) - indeed; बलिकर्मणा (balikarmaṇā) - by the act of offering; तथा (tathā) - so; शतगुणा (śataguṇā) - a hundredfold; प्रीतिः (prītiḥ) - delight; देवतानाम् (devatānām) - of the deities; स्म (sma) - so; जायते (jāyate) - arises;]
(Just as and of the householder satisfaction arises indeed by the act of offering; so a hundredfold delight of the deities so arises.)

एवं धूपप्रदानं च दीपदानं च साधवः। प्रशंसन्ति नमस्कारैर्युक्तमात्मगुणावहम् ॥१३-१०३-७॥
evaṃ dhūpapradānaṃ ca dīpadānaṃ ca sādhavaḥ। praśaṃsanti namaskārairyuktamātmaguṇāvaham ॥13-103-7॥

स्नानेनाद्भिश्च यत्कर्म क्रियते वै विपश्चिता। नमस्कारप्रयुक्तेन तेन प्रीयन्ति देवताः ॥ गृह्याश्च देवताः सर्वाः प्रीयन्ते विधिनार्चिताः ॥१३-१०३-८॥
snānenādbhiśca yatkarma kriyate vai vipaścitā। namaskāraprayuktena tena prīyanti devatāḥ ॥ gṛhyāśca devatāḥ sarvāḥ prīyante vidhinārcitāḥ ॥13-103-8॥
[स्नानेन (snānena) - by bathing; अद्भिः (adbhiḥ) - with waters; च (ca) - and; यत् (yat) - which; कर्म (karma) - action; क्रियते (kriyate) - is performed; वै (vai) - indeed; विपश्चिता (vipaścitā) - by the wise; नमस्कारप्रयुक्तेन (namaskāraprayuktena) - with (that which is) joined with reverential salutation; तेन (tena) - by that; प्रीयन्ति (prīyanti) - are pleased; देवताः (devatāḥ) - the deities; गृह्याः (gṛhyāḥ) - household (domestic); च (ca) - and; देवताः (devatāḥ) - deities; सर्वाः (sarvāḥ) - all; प्रीयन्ते (prīyante) - are gratified; विधिना (vidhinā) - with proper method; अर्चिताः (arcitāḥ) - honoured;]
(By bathing and with waters, which action is performed indeed by the wise, with that which is joined with reverential salutation, by that, the deities are pleased. Household deities and all deities are gratified who are honoured by the proper method.)
Through bathing and the ritual use of water, whatever action is performed by the wise with reverential salutation, by that the deities are pleased. All household deities, too, are gratified when they are honored according to proper method. (13-103-8)
इत्येतां बुद्धिमास्थाय नहुषः स नरेश्वरः। सुरेन्द्रत्वं महत्प्राप्य कृतवानेतदद्भुतम् ॥१३-१०३-९॥
ity etāṃ buddhim āsthāya nahuṣaḥ sa nareśvaraḥ। surendratvaṃ mahat prāpya kṛtavān etad adbhutam ॥13-103-9॥
[इति (iti) - thus; एतां (etāṃ) - this; बुद्धिम् (buddhim) - intellect; आस्थाय (āsthāya) - having resorted to; नहुषः (nahuṣaḥ) - Nahuṣa; स (sa) - he; नरेश्वरः (nareśvaraḥ) - lord of men; सुरेन्द्रत्वं (surendratvaṃ) - the state of lord of gods; महत् (mahat) - great; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having obtained; कृतवान् (kṛtavān) - did; एतत् (etat) - this; अद्भुतम् (adbhutam) - wonderful;]
(Thus, having resorted to this intellect, Nahuṣa, that lord of men, having obtained the great state of lord of gods, did this wonderful thing.)
Thus, having adopted this course of action, Nahuṣa, the lord of men, upon attaining the great position of the lord of the gods, performed this remarkable deed. (13-103-9)
कस्यचित्त्वथ कालस्य भाग्यक्षय उपस्थिते। सर्वमेतदवज्ञाय न चकारैतदीदृशम् ॥१३-१०३-१०॥
kasyacit tv atha kālasya bhāgyakṣaya upasthite। sarvam etad avajñāya na cakāra etad īdṛśam॥13-103-10॥
[कस्यचित् (kasyacit) - of someone; त्व (tv) - but; अथ (atha) - then; कालस्य (kālasya) - of time; भाग्य (bhāgya) - fortune; क्षय (kṣaya) - decline; उपस्थिते (upasthite) - having arrived; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; एतत् (etad) - this; अवज्ञाय (avajñāya) - disregarding; न (na) - not; चकार (cakāra) - he did; एतद् (etad) - this; ईदृशम् (īdṛśam) - such;]
(Of someone but then, when the decline of fortune of time had arrived, disregarding all this, he did not do such this.)
But then, when the time of someone's misfortune arrived, disregarding all this, he did not do anything like this. (13-103-10)
ततः स परिहीणोऽभूत्सुरेन्द्रो बलिकर्मतः। धूपदीपोदकविधिं न यथावच्चकार ह ॥ ततोऽस्य यज्ञविषयो रक्षोभिः पर्यबाध्यत ॥१३-१०३-११॥
tataḥ sa parihīṇo'bhūtsurendro balikarmataḥ। dhūpadīpodakavidhim na yathāvaccakāra ha ॥ tato'sya yajñaviṣayo rakṣobhiḥ paryabādhyata ॥13-103-11॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; स (sa) - he; परिहीणः (parihīṇaḥ) - bereft; अभूत् (abhūt) - became; सुरेन्द्रः (surendraḥ) - lord of the gods; बलिकर्मतः (balikarmataḥ) - due to the rite of offering; धूप (dhūpa) - incense; दीप (dīpa) - lamp; उदक (udaka) - water; विधिम् (vidhim) - proper procedure; न (na) - not; यथावत् (yathāvat) - properly; चकार (cakāra) - performed; ह (ha) - indeed; ततः (tataḥ) - then; अस्य (asya) - his; यज्ञविषयः (yajñaviṣayaḥ) - the object of sacrifice; रक्षोभिः (rakṣobhiḥ) - by the Rākṣasas (demons); पर्यबाध्यत (paryabādhyata) - was obstructed;]
(Then he, bereft, became the lord of the gods due to the absence of the rite of offering. The procedures of incense, lamp, and water he did not perform properly, indeed. Then his object of sacrifice was obstructed by the Rākṣasas.)
Then, deprived in this way, the lord of the gods ceased to receive the offering rites. He did not properly perform the prescribed acts with incense, lamps, and water. Therefore, the object of his sacrifice was hindered by demons. (13-103-11)
अथागस्त्यमृषिश्रेष्ठं वाहनायाजुहाव ह। द्रुतं सरस्वतीकूलात्स्मयन्निव महाबलः ॥१३-१०३-१२॥
athāgastyam ṛṣiśreṣṭhaṃ vāhanāyājuhāva ha । drutaṃ sarasvatī-kūlāt smayann iva mahā-balaḥ ॥13-103-12॥
[अथ (atha) - then; अगस्त्यम् (agastyam) - Agastya (the sage); ऋषिश्रेष्ठम् (ṛṣiśreṣṭham) - best of sages; वाहनाय (vāhanāya) - for transport; आजुहाव (ājuhāva) - he summoned; ह (ha) - indeed; द्रुतम् (drutam) - quickly; सरस्वतीकूलात् (sarasvatī-kūlāt) - from the bank of Sarasvatī; स्मयन् (smayan) - smiling; इव (iva) - as if; महाबलः (mahābalaḥ) - the mighty one;]
(Then Agastya, the best of sages, for transport, indeed, he summoned; quickly from the bank of Sarasvatī, smiling as if, the mighty one.)
Then the mighty one, smiling as if, quickly summoned sage Agastya, the best among sages, to his vehicle from the bank of the Sarasvatī. (13-103-12)
ततो भृगुर्महातेजा मैत्रावरुणिमब्रवीत्। निमीलयस्व नयने जटा यावद्विशामि ते ॥१३-१०३-१३॥
tato bhṛgurmahātejā maitrāvaruṇimabravīt। nimīlayasva nayane jaṭā yāvadviśāmi te ॥13-103-13॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; भृगुः (bhṛguḥ) - Bhṛgu (the sage); महत्-तेजा (mahat-tejā) - of great splendour; मैत्रावरुणिम् (maitrāvaruṇim) - to the son of Mitra and Varuṇa; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; निमीलयस्व (nimīlayasva) - close (your); नयने (nayane) - eyes; जटा (jaṭā) - O Jaṭā (matted-haired one); यावत् (yāvat) - as long as; विशामि (viśāmi) - I enter; ते (te) - your;]
(Then Bhṛgu, of great splendour, said to the son of Mitra and Varuṇa: "Close your eyes, O Jaṭā, as long as I enter yours." (13-103-13))

[स्थाणु-भूतस्य (sthāṇu-bhūtasya) - of one who had become motionless; तस्य (tasya) - of him; अथ (atha) - then; जटाः (jaṭāḥ) - matted locks; प्राविशद् (prāviśat) - entered; अच्युतः (acyutaḥ) - Acyuta (Vishṇu, the imperishable one); भृगुः (bhṛguḥ) - Bhṛgu; स (sa) - he; सुमहातेजाः (sumahātejāḥ) - of great brilliance; पातनाय (pātanāya) - for the destruction; नृपस्य (nṛpasya) - of the king; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(Of one who had become motionless, of him then, the matted locks entered Acyuta. Bhrigu, he, of great brilliance, for the destruction of the king, indeed.)
Then, Acyuta entered the matted locks of him who had become motionless; Bhrigu, possessed of great brilliance, did so indeed for the destruction of the king. (13-103-14)
ततः स देवराट्प्राप्तस्तमृषिं वाहनाय वै। ततोऽगस्त्यः सुरपतिं वाक्यमाह विशां पते ॥१३-१०३-१५॥
tataḥ sa devarāṭ prāptas tam ṛṣiṃ vāhanāya vai। tato'gastyaḥ surapatiṃ vākyam āha viśāṃ pate ॥13-103-15॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; स (sa) - he; देवराट् (devarāṭ) - king of the gods; प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - having arrived; तम् (tam) - to him; ऋषिं (ṛṣiṃ) - sage; वाहनाय (vāhanāya) - for carrying; वै (vai) - indeed; ततः (tataḥ) - then; अगस्त्यः (agastyaḥ) - Agastya (proper noun); सुरपतिं (surapatiṃ) - to the lord of the gods; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - words; आह (āha) - said; विशां पते (viśāṃ pate) - O lord of people;]
(Then he, the king of the gods, having arrived, to that sage for carrying indeed. Then Agastya said words to the lord of the gods, O lord of people.)
Then, the king of the gods arrived to the sage in order to carry him. Then Agastya spoke to the lord of the gods, O lord of people. (13-103-15)
योजयस्वेन्द्र मां क्षिप्रं कं च देशं वहामि ते। यत्र वक्ष्यसि तत्र त्वां नयिष्यामि सुराधिप ॥१३-१०३-१६॥
yojayasvendra māṁ kṣipraṁ kaṁ ca deśaṁ vahāmi te। yatra vakṣyasi tatra tvāṁ nayiṣyāmi surādhipa ॥13-103-16॥
[योजयस्व (yojaya sva) - join (order); इन्द्र (indra) - Indra; (O Indra; vocative); मां (māṁ) - me; (accusative); क्षिप्रं (kṣipraṁ) - quickly; कं (kaṁ) - which; (accusative); च (ca) - and; देशं (deśaṁ) - place; (accusative); वहामि (vahāmi) - I will carry; ते (te) - for you; यत्र (yatra) - where; वक्ष्यसि (vakṣyasi) - you will say; तत्र (tatra) - there; त्वां (tvāṁ) - you; (accusative); नयिष्यामि (nayiṣyāmi) - I will take; सुराधिप (surādhipa) - O lord of gods; (vocative);]
(Order, O Indra, me quickly: which place and I will carry for you. Where you will say, there you I will take, O lord of gods.)
Order me quickly, O Indra—which place I shall carry you to. Wherever you say, there I will take you, O lord of gods. (13-103-16)
इत्युक्तो नहुषस्तेन योजयामास तं मुनिम्। भृगुस्तस्य जटासंस्थो बभूव हृषितो भृशम् ॥१३-१०३-१७॥
ity ukto nahuṣas tena yojayām āsa taṃ munim। bhṛgus tasya jaṭāsaṃstho babhūva hṛṣito bhṛśam ॥13-103-17॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - having been addressed; नहुषः (nahuṣaḥ) - Nahuṣa (proper noun); तेन (tena) - by him; योजयाम् (yojayām) - to yoke; आस (āsa) - he set about; तं (tam) - that; मुनिम् (munim) - sage; भृगुः (bhṛguḥ) - Bhṛgu (proper noun); तस्य (tasya) - of him; जटासंस्थः (jaṭāsaṃsthaḥ) - abiding in the matted hair; बभूव (babhūva) - became; हृषितः (hṛṣitaḥ) - delighted; भृशम् (bhṛśam) - very much;]
(Thus having been spoken to, Nahuṣa by him set about to yoke that sage. Bhṛgu, abiding in his matted hair, became very much delighted.)
Thus, when addressed in this way, Nahuṣa, at his command, began to yoke that sage. Bhṛgu, remaining in his matted hair, became very delighted. (13-103-17)
न चापि दर्शनं तस्य चकार स भृगुस्तदा। वरदानप्रभावज्ञो नहुषस्य महात्मनः ॥१३-१०३-१८॥
na cāpi darśanaṃ tasya cakāra sa bhṛgustadā। varadānaprabhāvajño nahuṣasya mahātmanaḥ ॥13-103-18॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; दर्शनं (darśanam) - appearance; तस्य (tasya) - of him; his; चकार (cakāra) - made; did; स (sa) - he; भृगुः (bhṛguḥ) - Bhrigu; तदा (tadā) - then; at that time; वरदानप्रभावज्ञः (varadānaprabhāvajñaḥ) - knower of the power of boons; नहुषस्य (nahuṣasya) - of Nahuṣa; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - of the great-souled;]
(Not and also appearance of him did he, Bhrigu, then make; the knower of the power of boons, of Nahuṣa the great-souled.)
Nor did Bhrigu show himself then; knowing the power of the boons of the great-souled Nahuṣa. (13-103-18)
न चुकोप स चागस्त्यो युक्तोऽपि नहुषेण वै। तं तु राजा प्रतोदेन चोदयामास भारत ॥१३-१०३-१९॥
na cukopa sa cāgastyō yuktō'pi nahuṣēṇa vai। taṁ tu rājā pratōdēna cōdayāmāsa bhārata ॥13-103-19॥
[न (na) - not; चुकोप (cukopa) - became angry; सः (saḥ) - he; च (ca) - and; अगस्त्यः (agastyaḥ) - Agastya; युक्तः (yuktaḥ) - being joined; अपि (api) - even; नहुषेण (nahuṣeṇa) - by Nahuṣa; वै (vai) - indeed; तं (tam) - him; तु (tu) - but; राजा (rājā) - the king; प्रतोदेन (pratōdena) - with a goad; चोदयामास (cōdayāmāsa) - urged on; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(Not became angry he and Agastya, being joined even by Nahuṣa indeed. Him but the king with a goad urged on, O Bhārata (13-103-19).)
But Agastya did not become angry, though he had been yoked by Nahuṣa. Yet the king urged him on with a goad, O Bhārata. (13-103-19)
न चुकोप स धर्मात्मा ततः पादेन देवराट्। अगस्त्यस्य तदा क्रुद्धो वामेनाभ्यहनच्छिरः ॥१३-१०३-२०॥
na cukopa sa dharmātmā tataḥ pādena devarāṭ| agastyasya tadā kruddho vāmenābhyahanacchiraḥ ॥13-103-20॥

(Not became angry he, the righteous-souled; then with (his) foot, the king of the gods of Agastya then, angry, with (his) left (foot or hand), struck (the) head.)
He, the righteous-souled, did not become angry; then the king of the gods, being angry, struck Agastya's head with his left foot. (13-103-20)
तस्मिञ्शिरस्यभिहते स जटान्तर्गतो भृगुः। शशाप बलवत्क्रुद्धो नहुषं पापचेतसम् ॥१३-१०३-२१॥
tasmiñ śirasya abhihate sa jaṭāntargato bhṛguḥ। śaśāpa balavat kruddho nahuṣam pāpacetasaṃ ॥13-103-21॥
[तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; शिरसि (śirasi) - on the head; अभिहते (abhihate) - having been struck; सः (saḥ) - he; जटा-अन्तर्-गतः (jaṭā-antar-gataḥ) - gone within the matted locks; भृगुः (bhṛguḥ) - Bhṛgu; शशाप (śaśāpa) - cursed; बलवत्-क्रुद्धः (balavat-kruddhaḥ) - very much enraged; नहुषम् (nahuṣam) - Nahuṣa; पापचेतसम् (pāpa-cetasam) - of evil-minded;]
(In that, when the head was struck, he, Bhṛgu who had gone within the matted locks, very much enraged, cursed Nahuṣa of evil mind.)
After the head was struck, Bhṛgu, who was inside the matted locks, being intensely angry, cursed the evil-minded Nahuṣa. (13-103-21)

यस्मात्पदाहनः क्रोधाच्छिरसीमं महामुनिम्। तस्मादाशु महीं गच्छ सर्पो भूत्वा सुदुर्मते ॥१३-१०३-२२॥
yasmātpadāhanaḥ krodhācchirasīmaṃ mahāmunim। tasmādāśu mahīṃ gaccha sarpo bhūtvā sudurmate ॥13-103-22॥
[यस्मात् (yasmāt) - because of which; पदाहनः (padāhanaḥ) - striking with foot; क्रोधात् (krodhāt) - from anger; शिरसि (śirasi) - upon the head; इमं (imaṃ) - this; महामुनिम् (mahāmunim) - great sage; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; आशु (āśu) - quickly; महीम् (mahīm) - earth; गच्छ (gaccha) - go; सर्पः (sarpaḥ) - snake; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; सुदुर्मते (sudurmate) - wicked-minded one;]
(Because of which, having struck this great sage on the head with your foot, from anger; therefore, quickly go to earth, having become a snake, O wicked-minded one.)
Because you struck this great sage on the head with your foot out of anger, therefore, quickly go to earth as a snake, O wicked-minded one. (13-103-22)
इत्युक्तः स तदा तेन सर्पो भूत्वा पपात ह। अदृष्टेनाथ भृगुणा भूतले भरतर्षभ ॥१३-१०३-२३॥

(Thus addressed, he then by him, having become a serpent, fell indeed. By the unseen (one), then, by Bhṛgu, on the earth, O bull among the Bharatas.)

भृगुं हि यदि सोऽद्राक्षीन्नहुषः पृथिवीपते। न स शक्तोऽभविष्यद्वै पातने तस्य तेजसा ॥१३-१०३-२४॥
bhṛguṁ hi yadi so'drākṣīn nahuṣaḥ pṛthivīpate। na sa śakto'bhaviṣyad vai pātane tasya tejasā ॥13-103-24॥

(Bhṛgu indeed if he had seen, Nahuṣa, O lord of the earth, not he able would have been indeed in causing to fall by the energy of him.)
O lord of the earth, if Nahuṣa had truly seen Bhṛgu, he would not have been able to bring him down by his (Bhṛgu's) energy. (13-103-24)
स तु तैस्तैः प्रदानैश्च तपोभिर्नियमैस्तथा। पतितोऽपि महाराज भूतले स्मृतिमानभूत् ॥ प्रसादयामास भृगुं शापान्तो मे भवेदिति ॥१३-१०३-२५॥
sa tu tais taiḥ pradānaiś ca tapobhir niyamais tathā। patito'pi mahārāja bhūtale smṛtimān abhūt॥ prasādayām āsa bhṛguṃ śāpānto me bhaved iti॥13-103-25॥
[स (sa) - he; तु (tu) - but; तैस्तैः (tais taiḥ) - with those (various); प्रदानैश्च (pradānaiś ca) - and with gifts; तपोभिः (tapobhiḥ) - with austerities; नियमैस्तथा (niyamais tathā) - and with observances likewise; पतितःऽअपि (patitaḥ'api) - though fallen; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; भूतले (bhūtale) - on the earth; स्मृतिमान (smṛtimān) - possessing memory; अभूत् (abhūt) - became; प्रसादयामास (prasādayām āsa) - he sought to propitiate; भृगुं (bhṛgum) - Bhṛgu; शापान्तः (śāpāntaḥ) - end of the curse; मे (me) - to me; भवेत् (bhavet) - may be; इति (iti) - thus;]
(He but with those (various) and with gifts with austerities and with observances likewise though fallen O great king on the earth possessing memory became. He sought to propitiate Bhṛgu, (thinking) "end of the curse to me may be thus." (13-103-25))
But he, O great king, though fallen on the earth, by means of various gifts, austerities, and observances, regained his memory. He sought to propitiate Bhṛgu, thinking, "May the end of my curse come." (13-103-25)
ततोऽगस्त्यः कृपाविष्टः प्रासादयत तं भृगुम्। शापान्तार्थं महाराज स च प्रादात्कृपान्वितः ॥१३-१०३-२६॥

[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अगस्त्यः (agastyaḥ) - Agastya; कृपाविष्टः (kṛpāviṣṭaḥ) - filled with compassion; प्रासादयत् (prāsādayat) - caused to be pleased; तं (taṃ) - him; भृगुम् (bhṛgum) - Bṛgu; शापान्तार्थम् (śāpāntārtham) - for the purpose of ending the curse; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; सः (saḥ) - he; च (ca) - and; प्रादात् (prādāt) - gave; कृपान्वितः (kṛpānvitaḥ) - endowed with compassion;]
(Then Agastya, filled with compassion, caused that Bṛgu to be pleased for the purpose of ending the curse, O great king; and he gave (it), endowed with compassion.)

rājā yudhiṣṭhiro nāma bhaviṣyati kurūdvahaḥ। sa tvāṃ mokṣayitā śāpādity uktvā antaradhīyata॥13-103-27॥
[राजा (rājā) - king; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhiṣṭhira; नाम (nāma) - named; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be; कुरूद्वहः (kurūdvahaḥ) - the glory of the Kuru (descendants); सः (saḥ) - he; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; मोक्षयिता (mokṣayitā) - will be the deliverer; शापात् (śāpāt) - from the curse; इति (iti) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; अन्तरधीयत (antaradhīyata) - disappeared;]
(King Yudhiṣṭhira named will be the glory of the Kuru (descendants); he you will be the deliverer from the curse—thus having spoken, disappeared.)
A king named Yudhiṣṭhira, the glory of the Kurus, will exist; he will deliver you from the curse—having said this, he disappeared. (13-103-27)
अगस्त्योऽपि महातेजाः कृत्वा कार्यं शतक्रतोः। स्वमाश्रमपदं प्रायात्पूज्यमानो द्विजातिभिः ॥१३-१०३-२८॥
agastyo'pi mahātejāḥ kṛtvā kāryaṃ śatakratoḥ। svam-āśrama-padaṃ prāyāt pūjyamānaḥ dvijātibhiḥ ॥13-103-28॥
[अगस्त्यः (agastyaḥ) - Agastya; (proper noun, a sage); अपि (api) - also; महातेजाः (mahātejāḥ) - of great splendor; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; कार्यं (kāryam) - the task; शतक्रतोः (śatakratoḥ) - of Śatakratu (Indra); स्वम् (svam) - own; आश्रमपदं (āśrama-padam) - hermitage; प्रायात् (prāyāt) - went; पूज्यमानः (pūjyamānaḥ) - being honored; द्विजातिभिः (dvijātibhiḥ) - by the twice-born (Brāhmaṇas);]

नहुषोऽपि त्वया राजंस्तस्माच्छापात्समुद्धृतः। जगाम ब्रह्मसदनं पश्यतस्ते जनाधिप ॥१३-१०३-२९॥
nahuṣo'pi tvayā rājaṃstasmācchāpātsamuddhṛtaḥ। jagāma brahma-sadanaṃ paśyataste janādhipa ॥13-103-29॥
[नहुषः (nahuṣaḥ) - Nahuṣa; (a proper noun; name of a king); अपि (api) - also; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; राजन् (rājan) - O king; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - from that; शापात् (śāpāt) - from curse; समुद्धृतः (samuddhṛtaḥ) - liberated, lifted up; जगाम (jagāma) - he went; ब्रह्मसदनम् (brahma-sadanam) - abode of Brahman; पश्यतः (paśyataḥ) - while you were seeing; ते (te) - your; जनाधिप (janādhipa) - O lord of people; (O king);]
(Nahuṣa also by you O king from that curse liberated; went to the abode of Brahman while you were seeing O lord of people;)
O king, even Nahuṣa was liberated from that curse by you; he went to the abode of Brahman while you, O lord of people, were watching. (13-103-29)
तदा तु पातयित्वा तं नहुषं भूतले भृगुः। जगाम ब्रह्मसदनं ब्रह्मणे च न्यवेदयत् ॥१३-१०३-३०॥
tadā tu pātayitvā taṃ nahuṣaṃ bhūtale bhṛguḥ। jagāma brahmasadanaṃ brahmaṇe ca nyavedayat ॥13-103-30॥
[तदा (tadā) - then; तु (tu) - but; पातयित्वा (pātayitvā) - having caused to fall; तं (taṃ) - him; नहुषम् (nahuṣam) - Nahuṣa; भूतले (bhūtale) - on the earth; भृगुः (bhṛguḥ) - Bhṛgu; जगाम (jagāma) - went; ब्रह्मसदनम् (brahmasadanam) - the abode of Brahmā; ब्रह्मणे (brahmaṇe) - to Brahmā; च (ca) - and; न्यवेदयत् (nyavedayat) - he reported;]
(Then but having caused him, Nahuṣa, to fall on the earth, Bhṛgu went to the abode of Brahmā and reported to Brahmā.)
Then Bhṛgu, after causing Nahuṣa to fall to the earth, went to the abode of Brahmā and informed Brahmā about it. (13-103-30)
ततः शक्रं समानाय्य देवानाह पितामहः। वरदानान्मम सुरा नहुषो राज्यमाप्तवान् ॥ स चागस्त्येन क्रुद्धेन भ्रंशितो भूतलं गतः ॥१३-१०३-३१॥
tataḥ śakraṁ samānāyya devān āha pitāmahaḥ। varadānān mama surā na huṣo rājyam āptavān॥ sa cāgastyena kruddhena bhraṁśito bhūtalaṁ gataḥ॥13-103-31॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; शक्रं (śakram) - Indra; समानाय्य (samānāyya) - having caused to be brought; देवान् (devān) - the gods; आह (āha) - said; पितामहः (pitāmahaḥ) - the grandsire; वरदानात् (varadānāt) - from the boon; मम (mama) - of mine; सुराः (surāḥ) - the gods; नहुषः (nahuṣaḥ) - Nahusha; राज्यम् (rājyam) - the kingdom; आप्तवान् (āptavān) - obtained; सः (saḥ) - he; च (ca) - and; अगस्त्येन (agastyena) - by Agastya; क्रुद्धेन (kruddhena) - being angry; भ्रंशितः (bhraṁśitaḥ) - deprived; भूतलम् (bhūtalam) - the earth; गतः (gataḥ) - went;]
(Then, having caused Indra to be brought, the grandsire said to the gods: "By the boon given by me, O gods, Nahusha obtained the kingdom." He, being deprived by the angry Agastya, went to the earth.)
Then, having Indra brought, the grandsire said to the gods: "By my boon, O gods, Nahusha has obtained the kingdom." But he, having been deprived by the angry Agastya, went down to the earth. (13-103-31)
न च शक्यं विना राज्ञा सुरा वर्तयितुं क्वचित्। तस्मादयं पुनः शक्रो देवराज्येऽभिषिच्यताम् ॥१३-१०३-३२॥
na ca śakyaṃ vinā rājñā surā vartayituṃ kvacit। tasmādayaṃ punaḥ śakro devarājye'bhiṣicyatām ॥13-103-32॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; शक्यं (śakyaṃ) - possible; विना (vinā) - without; राज्ञा (rājñā) - by a king; सुराः (surāḥ) - the gods; वर्तयितुं (vartayitum) - to sustain; क्वचित् (kvacit) - anywhere; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; अयम् (ayam) - this; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; शक्रः (śakraḥ) - Śakra; देवराज्ये (devarājye) - in the sovereignty of the gods; अभिषिच्यताम् ('abhiṣicyatām) - let him be consecrated;]
(Not and possible without by a king the gods to sustain anywhere. Therefore this again Śakra in the sovereignty of the gods let him be consecrated.)
And it is not possible for the gods to be sustained anywhere without a king; therefore, let this Śakra be consecrated again in the sovereignty of the gods. (13-103-32)
एवं सम्भाषमाणं तु देवाः पार्थ पितामहम्। एवमस्त्विति संहृष्टाः प्रत्यूचुस्ते पितामहम् ॥१३-१०३-३३॥
evaṁ sambhāṣamāṇaṁ tu devāḥ pārtha pitāmaham। evam astv iti saṁhṛṣṭāḥ pratyūcus te pitāmaham॥13-103-33॥
[एवं (evaṁ) - thus; सम्भाषमाणं (sambhāṣamāṇam) - speaking; तु (tu) - but; देवाः (devāḥ) - the gods; पार्थ (pārtha) - O Pārtha; पितामहम् (pitāmaham) - the grandsire; एवम् (evam) - thus; अस्तु (astu) - let it be; इति (iti) - so; संहृष्टाः (saṁhṛṣṭāḥ) - joyful; प्रत्यूचुः (pratyūcuḥ) - replied; ते (te) - they; पितामहम् (pitāmaham) - the grandsire;]
(Thus, speaking but the gods, O Pārtha, to the grandsire. Thus, "Let it be," so, joyful, replied they, to the grandsire.)
While the grandsire was thus speaking, O Pārtha, the gods joyfully replied to him, saying, "Let it be so." (13-103-33)
सोऽभिषिक्तो भगवता देवराज्येन वासवः। ब्रह्मणा राजशार्दूल यथापूर्वं व्यरोचत ॥१३-१०३-३४॥
so'bhiṣikto bhagavatā devarāj-yena vāsavaḥ। brahmaṇā rājaśārdūla yathā-pūrvaṃ vyarocata ॥13-103-34॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अभिषिक्तः (abhiṣiktaḥ) - anointed; भगवता (bhagavatā) - by the venerable (one) (by the Lord); देवराज्येन (devarāj-yena) - with the lordship of the gods; वासवः (vāsavaḥ) - Vāsava (Indra); ब्रह्मणा (brahmaṇā) - by Brahmā; राजशार्दूल (rājaśārdūla) - tiger among kings; यथा (yathā) - as; पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - formerly; व्यरोचत (vyarocata) - he shone;]
(He, anointed by the Venerable (Lord) with the lordship of the gods, Vāsava, by Brahmā, O tiger among kings, as formerly, shone.)
O tiger among kings, Vāsava (Indra), having been anointed by the Venerable Brahmā with the sovereignty of the gods, shone as before. (13-103-34)
एवमेतत्पुरावृत्तं नहुषस्य व्यतिक्रमात्। स च तैरेव संसिद्धो नहुषः कर्मभिः पुनः ॥१३-१०३-३५॥
evam etat purā vṛttaṁ nahuṣasya vyatikramāt। sa ca tair eva saṁsiddho nahuṣaḥ karmabhiḥ punaḥ ॥13-103-35॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; एतत् (etat) - this; पुरा (purā) - formerly; वृत्तम् (vṛttam) - occurred; नहुषस्य (nahuṣasya) - of Nahuṣa; व्यतिक्रमात् (vyatikramāt) - from transgression; सः (saḥ) - he; च (ca) - and; तैः (taiḥ) - by those; एव (eva) - indeed; संसिद्धः (saṁsiddhaḥ) - achieved; नहुषः (nahuṣaḥ) - Nahuṣa; कर्मभिः (karmabhiḥ) - by actions; पुनः (punaḥ) - again;]
(Thus, this formerly occurred due to the transgression of Nahuṣa. And he, indeed by those actions, Nahuṣa achieved [result] again.)
Thus, this occurred in the past due to Nahuṣa's transgression. And Nahuṣa again achieved [his result] by those same actions. (13-103-35)
तस्माद्दीपाः प्रदातव्याः सायं वै गृहमेधिभिः। दिव्यं चक्षुरवाप्नोति प्रेत्य दीपप्रदायकः ॥ पूर्णचन्द्रप्रतीकाशा दीपदाश्च भवन्त्युत ॥१३-१०३-३६॥
tasmāddīpāḥ pradātavyāḥ sāyaṃ vai gṛhamedhibhiḥ। divyaṃ cakṣuravāpnoti pretya dīpapradāyakaḥ॥ pūrṇacandrapratīkāśā dīpadāś ca bhavanty uta॥13-103-36॥
[तस्मात् (tasmāt) (tasmāt) - therefore; दीपाः (dīpāḥ) (dīpāḥ) - lamps; प्रदातव्याः (pradātavyāḥ) (pradātavyāḥ) - should be given; सायम् (sāyam) (sāyam) - in the evening; वै (vai) (vai) - indeed; गृहमेधिभिः (gṛhamedhibhiḥ) (gṛhamedhibhiḥ) - by householders; दिव्यम् (divyam) (divyam) - divine; चक्षुः (cakṣuḥ) (cakṣuḥ) - eye; अवाप्नोति (avāpnoti) (avāpnoti) - obtains; प्रेत्य (pretya) (pretya) - after death; दीपप्रदायकः (dīpapradāyakaḥ) (dīpapradāyakaḥ) - giver of lamps; पूर्णचन्द्रप्रतीकाशाः (pūrṇacandrapratīkāśāḥ) (pūrṇacandrapratīkāśāḥ) - resembling the full moon; दीपदाः (dīpadāḥ) (dīpadāḥ) - givers of lamps; च (ca) (ca) - and; भवन्ति (bhavanti) (bhavanti) - become; उत (uta) (uta) - indeed;]
(Therefore, lamps should be given in the evening indeed by householders. The giver of lamps obtains a divine eye after death. Lamp-givers also become those resembling the full moon, indeed. (13-103-36))
Therefore, lamps must be donated in the evening by householders. One who gives lamps attains divine sight after death. Those who give lamps also become radiant like the full moon. (13-103-36)
यावदक्षिनिमेषाणि ज्वलते तावतीः समाः। रूपवान्धनवांश्चापि नरो भवति दीपदः ॥१३-१०३-३७॥
yāvad akṣi-nimeṣāṇi jvalate tāvatīḥ samāḥ। rūpa-vān dhana-vān ca api naro bhavati dīpa-daḥ॥13-103-37॥
[यावत् (yāvat) - as many as; अक्षिनिमेषाणि (akṣi-nimeṣāṇi) - eye blinks; ज्वलते (jvalate) - burns; तावतीः (tāvatīḥ) - that many; समाः (samāḥ) - years; रूपवान् (rūpa-vān) - possessed of beauty; धनवान् (dhana-vān) - possessed of wealth; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; नरः (naraḥ) - man; भवति (bhavati) - becomes; दीपदः (dīpa-daḥ) - giver of a lamp;]
(As many eye blinks as it burns, that many years a man who gives a lamp also becomes possessed of beauty and wealth.)
For as many eye blinks as the lamp burns, for that many years, a man who gives a lamp becomes beautiful and wealthy. (13-103-37)
