अकामाश्च सकामाश्च हता येऽस्मिन्महाहवे। कां योनिं प्रतिपन्नास्ते तन्मे ब्रूहि पितामह ॥१३-११८-१॥
akāmāś ca sakāmāś ca hatā ye'smin mahāhave. kāṃ yoniṃ pratipannās te tan me brūhi pitāmaha ॥13-118-1॥

(Those without desire and those with desire, slain who in this great battle, which birth attained they? That to me tell, O grandsire.)
O grandsire, tell me, which birth have those who had desires and those who had none, and who were slain in this great battle, attained? (13-118-1)
दुःखं प्राणपरित्यागः पुरुषाणां महामृधे। जानामि तत्त्वं धर्मज्ञ प्राणत्यागं सुदुष्करम् ॥१३-११८-२॥
duḥkhaṃ prāṇa-parityāgaḥ puruṣāṇāṃ mahā-mṛdhe। jānāmi tattvaṃ dharma-jña prāṇa-tyāgaṃ su-duṣkaram॥13-118-2॥

समृद्धे वासमृद्धे वा शुभे वा यदि वाशुभे। कारणं तत्र मे ब्रूहि सर्वज्ञो ह्यसि मे मतः ॥१३-११८-३॥

O king, living beings are born together in this world, whether in prosperity or non-prosperity, auspiciousness or inauspiciousness. (13-118-4)
निरता येन भावेन तत्र मे शृणु कारणम्। सम्यक्चायमनुप्रश्नस्त्वयोक्तश्च युधिष्ठिर ॥१३-११८-५॥
niratā yena bhāvena tatra me śṛṇu kāraṇam। samyak cāyam anu-praśnaḥ tvayā uktaś ca yudhiṣṭhira ॥13-118-5॥

अत्र ते वर्तयिष्यामि पुरावृत्तमिदं नृप। द्वैपायनस्य संवादं कीटस्य च युधिष्ठिर ॥१३-११८-६॥

ब्रह्मभूतश्चरन्विप्रः कृष्णद्वैपायनः पुरा। ददर्श कीटं धावन्तं शीघ्रं शकटवर्त्मनि ॥१३-११८-७॥
brahmabhūtaś caran vipraḥ kṛṣṇadvaipāyanaḥ purā। dadarśa kīṭaṃ dhāvantaṃ śīghraṃ śakaṭavartmani ॥13-118-7॥
[ब्रह्मभूतः (brahmabhūtaḥ) - having become one with Brahman; चरन् (caran) - wandering; विप्रः (vipraḥ) - the sage; कृष्णद्वैपायनः (kṛṣṇadvaipāyanaḥ) - Kṛṣṇa Dvaipāyana (Vyāsa); पुरा (purā) - formerly; ददर्श (dadarśa) - saw; कीटम् (kīṭam) - an insect; धावन्तम् (dhāvantam) - running; शीघ्रम् (śīghram) - swiftly; शकटवर्त्मनि (śakaṭavartmani) - on the road of the cart;]
(Having become Brahman, wandering, the sage Kṛṣṇa Dvaipāyana formerly saw an insect running swiftly on the cart road.)
Once, the sage Kṛṣṇa Dvaipāyana, who had realized Brahman and was wandering, saw an insect swiftly running on the road of the cart. (13-118-7)
गतिज्ञः सर्वभूतानां रुतज्ञश्च शरीरिणाम्। सर्वज्ञः सर्वतो दृष्ट्वा कीटं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥१३-११८-८॥
gatijñaḥ sarvabhūtānāṃ rutajñaś ca śarīriṇām. sarvajñaḥ sarvato dṛṣṭvā kīṭaṃ vacanam abravīt ॥13-118-8॥
[गतिज्ञः (gatijñaḥ) - knower of movement; सर्वभूतानां (sarvabhūtānām) - of all beings; रुतज्ञः (rutajñaḥ) - knower of sounds; च (ca) - and; शरीरिणाम् (śarīriṇām) - of embodied (ones); सर्वज्ञः (sarvajñaḥ) - omniscient; सर्वतो (sarvataḥ) - everywhere; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; कीटं (kīṭam) - the insect; वचनम् (vacanam) - speech; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - he spoke;]
(The knower of the movement of all beings, and the knower of the sounds of the embodied, the omniscient, having seen everywhere, the insect, speech, spoke.)
The one who knows the movements of all beings and the sounds of embodied creatures, the omniscient, after seeing the insect everywhere, spoke these words. (13-118-8)
कीट सन्त्रस्तरूपोऽसि त्वरितश्चैव लक्ष्यसे। क्व धावसि तदाचक्ष्व कुतस्ते भयमागतम् ॥१३-११८-९॥
kīṭa santrastarūpo'si tvaritaścaiva lakṣyase। kva dhāvasi tadācakṣva kutaste bhayamāgatam ॥13-118-9॥

(Insect, frightened-form you are, quick and indeed you are seen. Where do you run? That tell; from where to you fear has come?)
You, appearing as a frightened insect, are quick and have been noticed. Where are you running? Tell that; from where has fear come to you? (13-118-9)

शकटस्यास्य महतो घोषं श्रुत्वा भयं मम। आगतं वै महाबुद्धे स्वन एष हि दारुणः ॥ श्रूयते न स मां हन्यादिति तस्मादपाक्रमे ॥१३-११८-१०॥
śakaṭasyāsya mahato ghoṣaṃ śrutvā bhayaṃ mama. āgataṃ vai mahābuddhe svana eṣa hi dāruṇaḥ ॥ śrūyate na sa māṃ hanyāditi tasmādapākrame ॥13-118-10॥
[शकटस्य (śakaṭasya) - of the cart; अस्य (asya) - this; महतः (mahataḥ) - great; huge; घोषं (ghoṣam) - sound; noise; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; भयं (bhayam) - fear; मम (mama) - to me; my; आगतं (āgatam) - has arisen; come; वै (vai) - indeed; महाबुद्धे (mahābuddhe) - O great-intellect; स्वनः (svanaḥ) - sound; एष (eṣa) - this; हि (hi) - indeed; दारुणः (dāruṇaḥ) - terrible; श्रूयते (śrūyate) - is heard; न (na) - not; स (sa) - he; माम् (mām) - me; हन्यात् (hanyāt) - may kill; इति (iti) - thus; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; अपाक्रमे (apākrame) - I withdraw; I depart;]
(Having heard the sound of this great cart, fear indeed to me has come, O great-intellect. This sound indeed is terrible. He is heard as not (may kill) me, thus; therefore I withdraw.)
Hearing the sound of this great cart, fear has come to me, O wise one. Truly, this sound is terrible. Since he is only heard and may not kill me, therefore I retreat. (13-118-10)
श्वसतां च शृणोम्येवं गोपुत्राणां प्रचोद्यताम्। वहतां सुमहाभारं संनिकर्षे स्वनं प्रभो ॥ नृणां च संवाहयतां श्रूयते विविधः स्वनः ॥१३-११८-११॥
śvasatāṃ ca śṛṇomy evaṃ goputrāṇāṃ pracodyatām। vahatāṃ sumahābhāraṃ saṃnikarṣe svanaṃ prabho ॥ nṛṇāṃ ca saṃvāhayatāṃ śrūyate vividhaḥ svanaḥ ॥ 13-118-11॥
[श्वसतां (śvasatām) - of those breathing; च (ca) - and; शृणोमि (śṛṇomi) - I hear; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; गोपुत्राणां (goputrāṇām) - of the sons of cowherds; प्रचोद्यताम् (pracodyatām) - being urged on; वहतां (vahatām) - of those bearing; सुमहाभारं (sumahābhāraṃ) - very great burden; संनिकर्षे (saṃnikarṣe) - at close proximity; स्वनं (svanaṃ) - sound; प्रभो (prabho) - O master; नृणां (nṛṇām) - of men; च (ca) - and; संवाहयतां (saṃvāhayatām) - of those causing to be carried; श्रूयते (śrūyate) - is heard; विविधः (vividhaḥ) - varied; स्वनः (svanaḥ) - sound;]
(And of those breathing I hear thus, of the sons of cowherds being urged on, of those bearing very great burdens at close proximity, the sound, O master. And of men causing to be carried, is heard varied sound.)
O master, thus I hear the sounds of the breathing and urging on of the sons of cowherds, of those carrying great burdens nearby. Also, of men engaging in carrying, a variety of sounds is heard. (13-118-11)
सोढुमस्मद्विधेनैष न शक्यः कीटयोनिना। तस्मादपक्रमाम्येष भयादस्मात्सुदारुणात् ॥१३-११८-१२॥
soḍhum asmad-vidhena eṣa na śakyaḥ kīṭa-yoninā। tasmād apakramāmi eṣa bhayāt asmāt su-dāruṇāt॥13-118-12॥
[सोढुम् (soḍhum) - to endure; अस्मद्विधेन (asmad-vidhena) - by one like me; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; न (na) - not; शक्यः (śakyaḥ) - possible; कीटयोनिना (kīṭa-yoninā) - by one born as an insect; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; अपक्रमामि (apakramāmi) - I withdraw; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; भयात् (bhayāt) - due to fear; अस्मात् (asmāt) - from this; सुदारुणात् (su-dāruṇāt) - very terrible;]
(To endure by one like me, this is not possible by one born as an insect. Therefore I withdraw from this due to fear from this very terrible (thing).)
It is not possible for one like me, born as an insect, to endure this. Therefore, I withdraw from this out of fear of this most terrible (thing). (13-118-12)
दुःखं हि मृत्युर्भूतानां जीवितं च सुदुर्लभम्। अतो भीतः पलायामि गच्छेयं नासुखं सुखात् ॥१३-११८-१३॥
duḥkhaṃ hi mṛtyurbhūtānāṃ jīvitaṃ ca sudurlabham। ato bhītaḥ palāyāmi gaccheyaṃ nāsukhaṃ sukhāt ॥13-118-13॥
[दुःखं (duḥkham) - suffering; हि (hi) - indeed; मृत्युः (mṛtyuḥ) - death; भूतानां (bhūtānāṃ) - of beings; जीवितं (jīvitam) - life; च (ca) - and; सुदुर्लभम् (sudurlabham) - very difficult to obtain; अतः (ataḥ) - therefore; भीतः (bhītaḥ) - afraid; पलायामि (palāyāmi) - I flee; गच्छेयं (gaccheyaṃ) - I might go; न (na) - not; असुखं (asukham) - unhappiness; सुखात् (sukhāt) - from happiness;]
(Suffering indeed death of beings, life also very difficult to obtain. Therefore afraid I flee, I might go, not unhappiness from happiness.)
Indeed, suffering is the death of beings, and life is very difficult to obtain. Therefore, being afraid, I flee; I might go, for there is no unhappiness arising from happiness. (13-118-13)

इत्युक्तः स तु तं प्राह कुतः कीट सुखं तव। मरणं ते सुखं मन्ये तिर्यग्योनौ हि वर्तसे ॥१३-११८-१४॥
ity uktaḥ sa tu taṃ prāha kutaḥ kīṭa sukhaṃ tava। maraṇaṃ te sukhaṃ manye tiryag-yonau hi vartase॥13-118-14॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - having been addressed; स (sa) - he; तु (tu) - but; तं (taṃ) - to him; प्राह (prāha) - said; कुतः (kutaḥ) - whence; कीट (kīṭa) - O insect; सुखं (sukhaṃ) - happiness; तव (tava) - your; मरणं (maraṇam) - death; ते (te) - for you; सुखं (sukham) - happiness; मन्ये (manye) - I think; तिर्यग्योनौ (tiryagyonau) - in the animal womb; हि (hi) - indeed; वर्तसे (vartase) - you abide;]
(Thus having been addressed, he but said to him: Whence, O insect, (comes) happiness to you? Death for you (is) happiness, I think, for you indeed abide in an animal womb. (13-118-14))
Thus addressed, he replied to him: "From where, O insect, do you have happiness? I think death is happiness for you, for you indeed dwell in an animal womb." (13-118-14)
शब्दं स्पर्शं रसं गन्धं भोगांश्चोच्चावचान्बहून्। नाभिजानासि कीट त्वं श्रेयो मरणमेव ते ॥१३-११८-१५॥
śabdaṃ sparśaṃ rasaṃ gandhaṃ bhogāṃś coccāvacān bahūn। nābhijānāsi kīṭa tvaṃ śreyo maraṇam eva te ॥13-118-15॥
[शब्दं (śabdaṃ) - sound; स्पर्शं (sparśaṃ) - touch; रसं (rasaṃ) - taste; गन्धं (gandhaṃ) - smell; भोगान् (bhogān) - enjoyments; च (ca) - and; उच्चावचान् (uccāvacān) - high and low; बहून् (bahūn) - many; न (na) - not; अभिजानासि (abhijānāsi) - you perceive; कीट (kīṭa) - insect; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; श्रेयो (śreyo) - better; मरणम् (maraṇam) - death; एव (eva) - only; ते (te) - for you;]
(Sound, touch, taste, smell, enjoyments — both high and low, many; you do not perceive, insect, you; better only death for you.)
You do not perceive sound, touch, taste, smell, nor the many various enjoyments, insect; only death is better for you. (13-118-15)

सर्वत्र निरतो जीव इतीहापि सुखं मम। चेतयामि महाप्राज्ञ तस्मादिच्छामि जीवितुम् ॥१३-११८-१६॥
sarvatra nirato jīva itīhāpi sukhaṃ mama। cetayāmi mahāprājña tasmād icchāmi jīvitum ॥13-118-16॥
[सर्वत्र (sarvatra) - everywhere; निरतः (nirataḥ) - absorbed; devoted; जीवः (jīvaḥ) - the living being; soul; इति (iti) - thus; so; इह (iha) - here; in this world; अपि (api) - also; even; सुखम् (sukham) - happiness; मम (mama) - of me; my; चेतयामि (cētayāmi) - I feel; I experience; महाप्राज्ञ (mahāprājña) - O great wise one; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I desire; जीवितुम् (jīvitum) - to live;]
(Everywhere absorbed, the living being, thus, here also, happiness, of me. I feel, O great wise one, therefore I desire to live.)
Because everywhere, the living being is always absorbed; thus, even here, I find happiness. O great wise one, therefore I desire to live. (13-118-16)
इहापि विषयः सर्वो यथादेहं प्रवर्तितः। मानुषास्तिर्यगाश्चैव पृथग्भोगा विशेषतः ॥१३-११८-१७॥
ihāpi viṣayaḥ sarvo yathādehaṃ pravartitaḥ। mānuṣās tiryagāś caiva pṛthagbhogā viśeṣataḥ ॥13-118-17॥

अहमासं मनुष्यो वै शूद्रो बहुधनः पुरा। अब्रह्मण्यो नृशंसश्च कदर्यो वृद्धिजीवनः ॥१३-११८-१८॥
aham āsaṁ manuṣyo vai śūdro bahudhanaḥ purā। abrahmaṇyo nṛśaṁsaś ca kadaryo vṛddhijīvanaḥ ॥13-118-18॥

(I was a human indeed, a Śūdra, having much wealth, formerly; not devoted to Brahman, cruel and miserly, living by usury.)

वाक्तीक्ष्णो निकृतिप्रज्ञो मोष्टा विश्वस्य सर्वशः। मिथःकृतोऽपनिधनः परस्वहरणे रतः ॥१३-११८-१९॥

[वाक्तीक्ष्णः (vāktīkṣṇaḥ) - sharp in speech; निकृति-प्रज्ञः (nikṛti-prajñaḥ) - possessing intelligence for deceit; मोष्टा (moṣṭā) - thief; विश्वस्य (viśvasya) - of all; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - in every way; मिथः-कृतः (mithaḥ-kṛtaḥ) - one who does false acts; अपनिधनः (apanidhanaḥ) - embezzler; परस्व-हरणे (parasva-haraṇe) - in the taking of others' wealth; रतः (rataḥ) - delighted;]
(Sharp in speech; possessing intelligence for deceit; thief; of all; in every way; one who does false acts; embezzler; in the taking of others' wealth; delighted.)
One who is sharp in speech, intelligent in deceit, a thief, in every way false in actions, an embezzler, and delights in taking others' wealth. (13-118-19)
भृत्यातिथिजनश्चापि गृहे पर्युषितो मया। मात्सर्यात्स्वादुकामेन नृशंसेन बुभूषता ॥१३-११८-२०॥
bhṛtyātithi-janaś cāpi gṛhe paryuṣito mayā। mātsaryāt svādu-kāmena nṛśaṁsena bubhūṣatā ॥13-118-20॥
[भृत्य (bhṛtya) - servant; अतिथि (atithi) - guest; जनः (janaḥ) - person; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; गृहे (gṛhe) - in (the) house; पर्युषितः (paryuṣitaḥ) - stayed overnight; मया (mayā) - by me; मात्सर्यात् (mātsaryāt) - from envy; स्वादु-कामेन (svādu-kāmena) - with desire for pleasurable things; नृशंसेन (nṛśaṁsena) - with cruelty; बुभूषता (bubhūṣatā) - wanting to eat;]
(Servant, guest, person, and also—in the house stayed overnight by me—from envy, with desire for pleasurable things, with cruelty, wanting to eat.)
Any servant, guest, or person who stayed overnight in my house, whom I—out of envy, desire for taste, and cruelty—allowed to go hungry. (13-118-20)
देवार्थं पितृयज्ञार्थमन्नं श्रद्धाकृतं मया। न दत्तमर्थकामेन देयमन्नं पुनाति ह ॥१३-११८-२१॥
devārthaṁ pitṛyajñārtham annaṁ śraddhākṛtaṁ mayā। na dattam arthakāmena deyam annaṁ punāti ha ॥13-118-21॥
[देवार्थम् (devārtham) - for the purpose of the gods; पितृयज्ञार्थम् (pitṛyajñārtham) - for the purpose of ancestral sacrifice; अन्नम् (annam) - food; श्रद्धा-कृतम् (śraddhākṛtam) - made (offered) with faith; मया (mayā) - by me; न (na) - not; दत्तम् (dattam) - given; अर्थकामेन (arthakāmena) - by one desiring wealth; देयम् (deyam) - to be given; अन्नम् (annam) - food; पुनाति (punāti) - purifies; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(Food for the purpose of the gods, food for the purpose of ancestral sacrifice, (food) made with faith by me; not given by one desiring wealth, food to be given indeed does not purify.)
Food prepared with faith by me for offerings to the gods and to the ancestors; food given by one desiring wealth does not purify. (13-118-21)
गुप्तं शरणमाश्रित्य भयेषु शरणागताः। अकस्मान्नो भयात्त्यक्ता न च त्राताभयैषिणः ॥१३-११८-२२॥
guptaṃ śaraṇam āśritya bhayeṣu śaraṇāgatāḥ। akasmān no bhayāt tyaktā na ca trātābhayeṣiṇaḥ॥13-118-22॥
[गुप्तं (guptam) - protected; hidden; शरणम् (śaraṇam) - refuge; आश्रित्य (āśritya) - having resorted to; भयेषु (bhayeṣu) - in dangers; शरणागताः (śaraṇāgatāḥ) - those who have sought refuge; अकस्मात् (akasmāt) - suddenly; unexpectedly; नः (naḥ) - us; भयात् (bhayāt) - from fear; त्यक्ताः (tyaktāḥ) - abandoned; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; त्राता (trātā) - protector; अभयैषिणः (abhayeṣiṇaḥ) - those seeking fearlessness;]
(Having resorted to hidden refuge, those who have sought refuge in dangers, suddenly, us, from fear, abandoned, not, and, protector, those seeking fearlessness.)
Having sought a secret refuge in times of danger, we, the ones who came for protection, were unexpectedly abandoned in our fear, and no protector arose for those seeking safety. (13-118-22)
धनं धान्यं प्रियान्दारान्यानं वासस्तथाद्भुतम्। श्रियं दृष्ट्वा मनुष्याणामसूयामि निरर्थकम् ॥१३-११८-२३॥
dhanaṃ dhānyaṃ priyāndārānyānaṃ vāsastathādbhutam। śriyaṃ dṛṣṭvā manuṣyāṇāmasūyāmi nirarthakam ॥13-118-23॥
[धनं (dhanaṃ) - wealth; धान्यं (dhānyaṃ) - grain; प्रियान् (priyān) - dear ones; दारान् (dārān) - wives; यानं (yānaṃ) - vehicle; वासः (vāsaḥ) - dwelling; तथा (tathā) - also; अद्भुतम् (adbhutam) - wondrous; श्रियम् (śriyam) - prosperity; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; मनुष्याणाम् (manuṣyāṇām) - of humans; असूयामि (asūyāmi) - I envy; निरर्थकम् (nirarthakam) - uselessly;]
(Wealth, grain, dear ones, wives, vehicle, dwelling, also wondrous; prosperity having seen of humans, I envy uselessly.)
Seeing wealth, grain, loved ones, wives, vehicles, dwellings, and other wondrous prosperities of people, I envy them without reason. (13-118-23)
ईर्ष्युः परसुखं दृष्ट्वा आतताय्यबुभूषकः। त्रिवर्गहन्ता चान्येषामात्मकामानुवर्तकः ॥१३-११८-२४॥
īrṣyuḥ parasukhaṁ dṛṣṭvā ātatāyyabubhūṣakaḥ. trivargahantā ca anyeṣām ātmakāmānuvartakaḥ ॥13-118-24॥
[ईर्ष्युः (īrṣyuḥ) - envious one; परसुखं (parasukham) - others' happiness; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; आतताय्यबुभूषकः (ātatāyyabubhūṣakaḥ) - desirous of harming (like a criminal); त्रिवर्गहन्ता (trivargahantā) - destroyer of the three objectives (dharma, artha, kāma); च (ca) - and; अन्येषाम् (anyeṣām) - of others; आत्मकामानुवर्तकः (ātmakāmānuvartakaḥ) - follower of personal desires;]
(Envious one, having seen others' happiness, desirous of harming (like a criminal), destroyer of the three objectives (dharma, artha, kāma), and follower of personal desires of others.)
One who is envious upon seeing others' happiness, desires to injure like a criminal, destroys the three aims of life (dharma, wealth, pleasure), and pursues only his own desires, following those of others. (13-118-24)
नृशंसगुणभूयिष्ठं पुरा कर्म कृतं मया। स्मृत्वा तदनुतप्येऽहं त्यक्त्वा प्रियमिवात्मजम् ॥१३-११८-२५॥
nṛśaṁsa-guṇa-bhūyiṣṭhaṁ purā karma kṛtaṁ mayā। smṛtvā tad anutapye 'haṁ tyaktvā priyam iva ātmajam ॥13-118-25॥
[नृशंसगुणभूयिष्ठम् (nṛśaṁsa-guṇa-bhūyiṣṭham) - cruel-qualities-abounding; (having an abundance of cruel qualities;) पुरा (purā) - formerly; कर्म (karma) - action; कृतम् (kṛtam) - done; मया (mayā) - by me; स्मृत्वा (smṛtvā) - having remembered; तत् (tat) - that; अनुतप्ये (anutapye) - I regret; अहम् (aham) - I; त्यक्त्वा (tyaktvā) - having abandoned; प्रियम् (priyam) - dear one; इव (iva) - like; आत्मजम् (ātmajam) - son;]
(Cruel-qualities-abounding formerly action done by me, having remembered that I regret I, having abandoned dear one like son.)
Recalling the action of abundant cruelty that I once did, I now regret it as if having abandoned a dear son. (13-118-25)
शुभानामपि जानामि कृतानां कर्मणां फलम्। माता च पूजिता वृद्धा ब्राह्मणश्चार्चितो मया ॥१३-११८-२६॥
śubhānām api jānāmi kṛtānāṃ karmaṇāṃ phalam। mātā ca pūjitā vṛddhā brāhmaṇaś cārcito mayā ॥13-118-26॥
[शुभानाम् (śubhānām) - of auspicious; अपि (api) - even; जानामि (jānāmi) - I know; कृतानाम् (kṛtānām) - of performed; कर्मणाम् (karmaṇām) - of actions; फलम् (phalam) - fruit; माता (mātā) - mother; च (ca) - and; पूजिता (pūjitā) - honored; वृद्धा (vṛddhā) - elderly; ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - Brahmin; च (ca) - and; अर्चितः (arcitaḥ) - worshipped; मया (mayā) - by me;]
(I know even the fruit of auspicious performed actions. Mother and honored, elderly, Brahmin and worshipped by me.)
I also know the results of auspicious deeds performed. The mother was honored by me in her old age, and the Brahmin was also worshipped by me. (13-118-26)
सकृज्जातिगुणोपेतः सङ्गत्या गृहमागतः। अतिथिः पूजितो ब्रह्मंस्तेन मां नाजहात्स्मृतिः ॥१३-११८-२७॥
sakṛj-jāti-guṇopetaḥ saṅgatyā gṛham-āgataḥ। atithiḥ pūjito brahmaṃs-tena māṃ nājahāt-smṛtiḥ ॥13-118-27॥
[सकृत् (sakṛt) - once; जाति (jāti) - birth; गुणोपेतः (guṇopetaḥ) - endowed with quality; सङ्गत्या (saṅgatyā) - with company; गृहम् (gṛham) - house; आगतः (āgataḥ) - having come; अतिथिः (atithiḥ) - guest; पूजितः (pūjitaḥ) - honored; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brahman; तेन (tena) - by him; माम् (mām) - me; न (na) - not; अजहत् (ajahāt) - gave up; स्मृतिः (smṛtiḥ) - memory;]
(Once, endowed with birth and qualities, with company, having come to the house, the guest, honored, O Brahman, by him, me, not, gave up, memory.)
O Brahman, once a guest endowed with noble birth and qualities came to my house with company and was honored by me; from then, the memory of that did not abandon me. (13-118-27)
कर्मणा तेन चैवाहं सुखाशामिह लक्षये। तच्छ्रोतुमहमिच्छामि त्वत्तः श्रेयस्तपोधन ॥१३-११८-२८॥
karmaṇā tena caivāhaṃ sukhāśāmiha lakṣaye। tacchrotumahamicchāmi tvattaḥ śreyastapodhana ॥13-118-28॥
[कर्मणा (karmaṇā) - by action; by karma; तेन (tena) - by that; by him; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - certainly; indeed; अहम् (aham) - I; सुखाशाम् (sukhāśām) - desire of happiness; इह (iha) - here; in this world; लक्षये (lakṣaye) - I perceive; I recognize; तत् (tat) - that; श्रोतुम् (śrotum) - to hear; अहम् (aham) - I; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I wish; त्वत्तः (tvattaḥ) - from you; श्रेयस् (śreyas) - better; superior; higher good; तपोधन (tapodhana) - O possessor of ascetic wealth; O sage;]
(By action by that and indeed I desire of happiness here I perceive. That to hear I wish from you better, O possessor of ascetic wealth.)
By that action, I indeed perceive here a desire for happiness. I wish to hear from you about that which is superior, O possessor of ascetic wealth. (13-118-28)
