शुभेन कर्मणा यद्वै तिर्यग्योनौ न मुह्यसे। ममैव कीट तत्कर्म येन त्वं न प्रमुह्यसे ॥१३-११९-१॥
śubhena karmaṇā yad vai tiryagyōnau na muhyase. mamaiva kīṭa tatkarma yēna tvaṃ na pramuhyase ॥13-119-1॥
[शुभेन (śubhena) - by auspicious (action); कर्मणा (karmaṇā) - by action; by deed; यद् (yad) - whereby; वै (vai) - indeed; तिर्यग्योनौ (tiryag-yōnau) - in the animal womb; in the lower birth; न (na) - not; मुह्यसे (muhyase) - you are deluded; you are confused; मम (mama) - my; एव (eva) - indeed; only; कीट (kīṭa) - worm; तत् (tat) - that; कर्म (karma) - action; deed; येन (yena) - by which; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; न (na) - not; प्रमुह्यसे (pramuhyase) - you are thoroughly deluded;]
(By auspicious action whereby indeed in the animal womb you are not deluded, my very own worm, that action by which you are not thoroughly deluded,)
By auspicious actions, by which indeed you are not deluded in the animal birth, my very own worm, perform that deed by which you will not be thoroughly deluded. (13-119-1)
अहं हि दर्शनादेव तारयामि तपोबलात्। तपोबलाद्धि बलवद्बलमन्यन्न विद्यते ॥१३-११९-२॥
ahaṃ hi darśanādeva tārayāmi tapobalāt। tapobalāddhi balavadbalam anyan na vidyate ॥13-119-2॥
[अहं (ahaṃ) - I; हि (hi) - indeed; दर्शनात् (darśanāt) - by sight; एव (eva) - only; तारयामि (tārayāmi) - I cause to cross over; तपोबलात् (tapobalāt) - by the strength of penance; तपोबलात् (tapobalāt) - by the strength of penance; हि (hi) - indeed; बलवत् (balavat) - powerful; बलम् (balam) - strength; अन्यत् (anyat) - other; न (na) - not; विद्यते (vidyate) - exists;]
(I indeed by sight only cause to cross over—by the strength of penance. By the strength of penance indeed, powerful strength other does not exist.)
Indeed, by sight alone, I make one cross over through the power of penance. Truly, no strength exists that is greater than the power of penance. (13-119-2)
जानामि पापैः स्वकृतैर्गतं त्वां कीट कीटताम्। अवाप्स्यसि परं धर्मं धर्मस्थो यदि मन्यसे ॥१३-११९-३॥
jānāmi pāpaiḥ svakṛtaiḥ gataṃ tvāṃ kīṭa kīṭatām। avāpsyasi paraṃ dharmaṃ dharmastho yadi manyase॥ 13-119-3॥
[जानामि (jānāmi) - I know; पापैः (pāpaiḥ) - by sins; स्वकृतैः (svakṛtaiḥ) - committed by oneself; गतं (gataṃ) - gone; त्वां (tvāṃ) - you; कीट (kīṭa) - worm; कीटताम् (kīṭatām) - the state of a worm; अवाप्स्यसि (avāpsyasi) - you will obtain; परं (paraṃ) - supreme; धर्मं (dharmaṃ) - dharma; धर्मस्थः (dharmasthaḥ) - being established in dharma; यदि (yadi) - if; मন্যसे (manyase) - you consider;]
(I know by sins committed by oneself gone you, worm, to the state of a worm. You will obtain the supreme dharma if, being established in dharma, you consider (so).)
I know, by sins that you yourself have committed, you have gone to the state of a worm. If you consider yourself established in dharma, you will obtain the highest dharma. (13-119-3)
कर्म भूमिकृतं देवा भुञ्जते तिर्यगाश्च ये। धर्मादपि मनुष्येषु कामोऽर्थश्च यथा गुणैः ॥१३-११९-४॥
karma bhūmikṛtaṃ devā bhuñjate tiryagāś ca ye | dharmād api manuṣyeṣu kāmo 'rthaś ca yathā guṇaiḥ ॥13-119-4॥
[कर्म (karma) - action; भूमिकृतं (bhūmikṛtam) - produced in the world; देवा (devāḥ) - the gods; भुञ्जते (bhuñjate) - enjoy; तिर्यगाश् (tiryagāḥ) - animals; च (ca) - and; ये (ye) - who; धर्मात् (dharmāt) - from righteousness; अपि (api) - even; मनुष्येषु (manuṣyeṣu) - among men; कामः (kāmaḥ) - desire; अर्थः (arthaḥ) - wealth; च (ca) - and; यथा (yathā) - according to; गुणैः (guṇaiḥ) - qualities;]
(The gods enjoy the actions produced in the world, and animals also who, from righteousness even among men, desire and wealth, according to (their) qualities.)
The gods and animals partake in the actions performed in the world, while among men, desire and wealth arise from righteousness, each according to their qualities. (13-119-4)
वाग्बुद्धिपाणिपादैश्चाप्युपेतस्य विपश्चितः। किं हीयते मनुष्यस्य मन्दस्यापि हि जीवतः ॥१३-११९-५॥
vāg-buddhi-pāṇi-pādaiś cāpy-upetasya vipaścitaḥ। kiṁ hīyate manuṣyasya mandasyāpi hi jīvataḥ॥13-119-5॥
[वाक् (vāg) - speech; बुद्धि (buddhi) - intellect; पाणि (pāṇi) - hands; पादैः (pādaiḥ) - by feet; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; उपेतस्य (upetasya) - endowed with; विपश्चितः (vipaścitaḥ) - of the learned; किम् (kim) - what; हीयते (hīyate) - is lacking; मनुष्यस्य (manuṣyasya) - of a man; मन्दस्य (mandasya) - of the dull; अपि (api) - even; हि (hi) - indeed; जीवतः (jīvataḥ) - while alive;]
(Speech, intellect, hands, by feet, and also endowed with, of the learned; what is lacking of a man, of the dull, even indeed while alive?)
For a man who possesses speech, intellect, hands, and feet, and who is wise, what could possibly be lacking—even for one of dull mind, so long as he is alive? (13-119-5)
जीवन्हि कुरुते पूजां विप्राग्र्यः शशिसूर्ययोः। ब्रुवन्नपि कथां पुण्यां तत्र कीट त्वमेष्यसि ॥१३-११९-६॥
jīvan hi kurute pūjāṁ viprāgryaḥ śaśisūryayoḥ। bruvann api kathāṁ puṇyāṁ tatra kīṭa tvam eṣyasi॥13-119-6॥
[जीवत् (jīvat) - living; हि (hi) - indeed; कुरुते (kurute) - does; performs; पूजां (pūjāṁ) - worship; विप्राग्र्यः (viprāgryaḥ) - the foremost among Brāhmaṇas; शशिसूर्ययोः (śaśisūryayoḥ) - to the moon and sun; ब्रुवन् (bruvan) - saying; speaking; अपि (api) - also; even; कथां (kathāṁ) - story; account; पुण्यां (puṇyāṁ) - meritorious; sacred; तत्र (tatra) - there; कीट (kīṭa) - insect; त्वम् (tvam) - you; एष्यसि (eṣyasi) - you will go;]
(Living indeed performs worship the foremost among Brāhmaṇas to the moon and sun, speaking also story meritorious, there insect you will go.)
Even if, during life, the foremost among Brāhmaṇas performs worship of the moon and sun, and tells a meritorious story, there, as an insect, you will go. (13-119-6)
गुणभूतानि भूतानि तत्र त्वमुपभोक्ष्यसे। तत्र तेऽहं विनेष्यामि ब्रह्मत्वं यत्र चेच्छसि ॥१३-११९-७॥
guṇabhūtāni bhūtāni tatra tvam upabhokṣyase। tatra te'haṃ vineṣyāmi brahmatvaṃ yatra cecchasi॥13-119-7॥
[गुणभूतानि (guṇabhūtāni) - having become qualities; भूतानि (bhūtāni) - beings; तत्र (tatra) - there; त्वम् (tvam) - you; उपभोक्ष्यसे (upabhokṣyase) - you will enjoy; तत्र (tatra) - there; ते (te) - for you; अहम् (aham) - I; विनेष्यामि (vineṣyāmi) - will remove; ब्रह्मत्वम् (brahmatvam) - state of Brahman; यत्र (yatra) - where; चेत् (cet) - if; इच्छसि (icchasi) - you desire;]
(Having become qualities, the beings there you will enjoy. There for you, I will remove the state of Brahman, where if you desire.)
You will enjoy the beings there, which have become qualities. There, I will remove your state of Brahman, wherever you desire. (13-119-7)
स तथेति प्रतिश्रुत्य कीटो वर्त्मन्यतिष्ठत। तमृषिं द्रष्टुमगमत्सर्वास्वन्यासु योनिषु ॥१३-११९-८॥
sa tatheti pratiśrutya kīṭo vartmany atiṣṭhata. tam ṛṣiṃ draṣṭum agamata sarvāsu anyāsu yoniṣu ॥13-119-8॥
[स (sa) - he; तथेति (tatheti) - so be it thus; प्रतिश्रुत्य (pratiśrutya) - having promised; कीटः (kīṭaḥ) - the insect; वर्त्मनि (vartmani) - on the path; अतिष्ठत् (atiṣṭhat) - stood; तम् (tam) - him; ऋषिम् (ṛṣim) - the sage; द्रष्टुम् (draṣṭum) - to see; अगमत् (agamat) - went; सर्वासु (sarvāsu) - in all; अन्यासु (anyāsu) - other; योनिषु (yoniṣu) - births (wombs);]
(He, having promised "so be it," the insect stood on the path. Him, to see the sage, he went into all other births.)
He, having promised "so be it," the insect remained on the path. In order to see that sage, it passed through all other births. (13-119-8)
श्वाविद्गोधावराहाणां तथैव मृगपक्षिणाम्। श्वपाकवैश्यशूद्राणां क्षत्रियाणां च योनिषु ॥१३-११९-९॥
śvāvid-godhā-varāhāṇāṃ tathaiva mṛga-pakṣiṇām। śvapāka-vaiśya-śūdrāṇāṃ kṣatriyāṇāṃ ca yoniṣu॥13-119-9॥
[श्वाविद् (śvāvid) - hunter with dogs; गोधा (godhā) - monitor lizard; वराहाणां (varāhāṇām) - of boars; तथैव (tathaiva) - likewise; मृग (mṛga) - of deer; पक्षिणाम् (pakṣiṇām) - of birds; श्वपाक (śvapāka) - one who cooks (or eats) dog's flesh; वैश्य (vaiśya) - Vaiśya (the third class); शूद्राणां (śūdrāṇām) - of Śūdras (the fourth class); क्षत्रियाणां (kṣatriyāṇāṃ) - of Kṣatriyas (the second class); च (ca) - and; योनिषु (yoniṣu) - among births (generations, wombs);]
(Of hunters with dogs, of monitor lizards, of boars, likewise of deer and birds; among the births of those who cook dog's flesh, Vaiśyas, Śūdras, and Kṣatriyas also.)

स कीटेत्येवमाभाष्य ऋषिणा सत्यवादिना। प्रतिस्मृत्याथ जग्राह पादौ मूर्ध्ना कृताञ्जलिः ॥१३-११९-१०॥
sa kīṭety-evam-ābhāṣya ṛṣiṇā satyavādinā। pratismṛtyātha jagrāha pādau mūrdhnā kṛtāñjaliḥ ॥13-119-10॥
[स (sa) - he; कीटेत्येवम् (kīṭa iti evam) - ‘O insect’ thus; आभाष्य (ābhāṣya) - having addressed; ऋषिणा (ṛṣiṇā) - by the sage; सत्यवादिना (satyavādinā) - truth-speaking; प्रतिस्मृत्य (pratismṛtya) - having recalled; अथ (atha) - then; जग्राह (jagrāha) - he seized; पादौ (pādau) - feet; मूर्ध्ना (mūrdhnā) - with (his) head; कृताञ्जलिः (kṛtāñjaliḥ) - with joined palms;]
(He, having thus addressed ‘O insect’ by the truth-speaking sage, having recalled, then seized (his) feet with (his) head, with joined palms.)
After the truth-speaking sage addressed him as ‘O insect’, he, recalling (the words), then took (the sage’s) feet with his head, joining his palms. (13-119-10)

इदं तदतुलं स्थानमीप्सितं दशभिर्गुणैः। यदहं प्राप्य कीटत्वमागतो राजपुत्रताम् ॥१३-११९-११॥
idaṃ tad-atulaṃ sthānam-īpsitaṃ daśabhir-guṇaiḥ। yad-ahaṃ prāpya kīṭatvam-āgato rājaputratām ॥13-119-11॥
[इदं (idaṃ) - this; तद् (tad) - that; अतुलं (atulaṃ) - incomparable; स्थानम् (sthānam) - place; ईप्सितं (īpsitam) - desired; दशभिः (daśabhiḥ) - by ten; गुणैः (guṇaiḥ) - qualities; यत् (yat) - which; अहम् (aham) - I; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having attained; कीटत्वम् (kīṭatvam) - insect-hood; आगतः (āgataḥ) - have come; राजपुत्रताम् (rājaputratām) - prince-hood;]
(This that incomparable place desired by ten qualities, which I, having attained insect-hood, have come to prince-hood.)
This is that incomparable position, endowed with ten qualities, which I, after having experienced being an insect, have now attained as prince-hood. (13-119-11)
वहन्ति मामतिबलाः कुञ्जरा हेममालिनः। स्यन्दनेषु च काम्बोजा युक्ताः परमवाजिनः ॥१३-११९-१२॥
vahanti mām atibalāḥ kuñjarā hemamālinaḥ। syandaneṣu ca kāmbojā yuktāḥ paramavājinaḥ॥13-119-12॥
[वहन्ति (vahanti) - they bear; they carry; माम् (mām) - me; अतिबलाः (atibalāḥ) - very strong; exceedingly powerful; कुञ्जराः (kuñjarāḥ) - elephants; हेममालिनः (hemamālinaḥ) - adorned with gold; bearing gold garlands; स्यन्दनेषु (syandaneṣu) - in chariots; च (ca) - and; काम्बोजाः (kāmbojāḥ) - Kamboja horses; (horses of the Kamboja breed;) युक्ताः (yuktāḥ) - yoked; परमवाजिनः (paramavājinaḥ) - the most excellent steeds; exceedingly best horses;]
(Very strong elephants adorned with gold bear me; and in the chariots, yoked Kamboja horses, the most excellent steeds.)

उष्ट्राश्वतरयुक्तानि यानानि च वहन्ति माम्। सबान्धवः सहामात्यश्चाश्नामि पिशितौदनम् ॥१३-११९-१३॥

सर्वेष्वपररात्रेषु सूतमागधबन्दिनः। स्तुवन्ति मां यथा देवं महेन्द्रं प्रियवादिनः ॥१३-११९-१५॥
sarveṣv apararātreṣu sūta-māgadha-bandinaḥ। stuvanti māṃ yathā devaṃ mahendraṃ priyavārdinaḥ॥13-119-15॥
[सर्वेषु (sarveṣu) - in all; अपररात्रेषु (apararātreṣu) - late nights; सूत (sūta) - bards; मागध (māgadha) - minstrels; बन्दिनः (bandinaḥ) - praisers; स्तुवन्ति (stuvanti) - they praise; माम् (mām) - me; यथा (yathā) - just as; देवम् (devam) - the god; महेन्द्रम् (mahendram) - Mahendra (Indra); प्रियवादिनः (priyavādinaḥ) - those speaking pleasant words;]
(In all late nights, bards, minstrels, praisers praise me just as those who speak pleasant words (praise) the god Mahendra.)

[प्रसादात् (prasādāt) - by favour; by grace; सत्यसन्धस्य (satyasaṃdhasya) - of the one steadfast in truth; भवतः (bhavataḥ) - of you; अमिततेजसः (amitatejasaḥ) - of immeasurable energy; यत् (yat) - that; अहम् (aham) - I; कीटताम् (kīṭatām) - to the state of an insect; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having attained; सम्प्राप्तः (samprāptaḥ) - have obtained; राजपुत्रताम् (rājaputratām) - the state of a prince;]
(By the favour of you, the one steadfast in truth, of immeasurable energy, that I, having attained the state of an insect, have obtained the state of a prince.)
By your favour, O steadfast and immeasurably powerful one, I, who had become an insect, have now attained the status of a prince. (13-119-16)
नमस्तेऽस्तु महाप्राज्ञ किं करोमि प्रशाधि माम्। त्वत्तपोबलनिर्दिष्टमिदं ह्यधिगतं मया ॥१३-११९-१७॥

("Salutations to you; let there be, O greatly wise one; what shall I do? Instruct me. This, indeed, pointed out by your ascetic power, has been attained by me." (13-119-17))

अर्चितोऽहं त्वया राजन्वाग्भिरद्य यदृच्छया। अद्य ते कीटतां प्राप्य स्मृतिर्जाताजुगुप्सिता ॥१३-११९-१८॥
arcito'ham tvayā rājan vāgbhir adya yadṛcchayā। adya te kīṭatāṃ prāpya smṛtir jātā jugupsitā ॥13-119-18॥
[अर्चितः (arcitaḥ) - worshipped; honored; अहम् (aham) - I; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; राजन् (rājan) - O king; वाग्भिः (vāgbhiḥ) - by words; अद्य (adya) - today; यदृच्छया (yadṛcchayā) - accidentally; by chance; अद्य (adya) - today; ते (te) - your; कीटताम् (kīṭatām) - the state of being an insect; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having attained; स्मृतिः (smṛtiḥ) - remembrance; जाता (jātā) - has arisen; जुगुप्सिता (jugupsitā) - disgusted; causing aversion;]
(Honored I by you, O king, by words today by chance. Today, your insect-state having attained, remembrance has arisen, disgusted.)
O king, I have been honored by you today with words, by chance. But now, having attained the state of an insect, your remembrance has arisen in me, filled with disgust. (13-119-18)
न तु नाशोऽस्ति पापस्य यत्त्वयोपचितं पुरा। शूद्रेणार्थप्रधानेन नृशंसेनाततायिना ॥१३-११९-१९॥
na tu nāśo'sti pāpasya yat tvayopacitaṃ purā। śūdreṇārthapradhānena nṛśaṃsenātatāyinā ॥13-119-19॥
[न (na) - not; तु (tu) - but; नाशः (nāśaḥ) - destruction; अस्ति (asti) - is; पापस्य (pāpasya) - of sin; यत् (yat) - which; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; उपचितं (upacitaṃ) - accumulated; पुरा (purā) - formerly; शूद्रेण (śūdreṇa) - by a śūdra; अर्थप्रधानेन (arthapradhānena) - one whose focus is wealth; नृशंसेन (nṛśaṃsena) - cruel; आततायिना (ātatāyinā) - by one who is aggressive or criminal;]
(But not destruction there is of sin which by you was accumulated formerly by a śūdra, by one focused on wealth, by a cruel one, by an aggressive one.)
But there is no destruction of the sin that you previously accumulated—as a śūdra, as one who valued wealth, as a cruel and aggressive person. (13-119-19)
मम ते दर्शनं प्राप्तं तच्चैव सुकृतं पुरा। तिर्यग्योनौ स्म जातेन मम चाप्यर्चनात्तथा ॥१३-११९-२०॥
mama te darśanaṃ prāptaṃ tac caiva sukṛtaṃ purā. tiryag-yonau sma jātena mama cāpy arcanāt tathā ॥13-119-20॥
[मम (mama) - of me; ते (te) - by you; दर्शनं (darśanam) - sight; प्राप्तं (prāptam) - attained; तत् (tat) - that; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; सुकृतं (sukṛtam) - good deed; पुरा (purā) - formerly; तिर्यग्योनौ (tiryag-yonau) - in an animal womb; स्म (sma) - indeed; जातेन (jātena) - having been born; मम (mama) - of me; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अर्चनात् (arcanāt) - from worship; तथा (tathā) - so;]
(Of me, by you, sight attained; that indeed (is) good deed formerly. In an animal womb indeed having been born, of me and also from worship so.)
By you, my sight was attained; that was indeed a meritorious act performed in the past. Having been born in an animal womb, so too, by worshipping me, this resulted. (13-119-20)
इतस्त्वं राजपुत्रत्वाद्ब्राह्मण्यं समवाप्स्यसि। गोब्राह्मणकृते प्राणान्हुत्वात्मीयान्रणाजिरे ॥१३-११९-२१॥
itastvaṁ rājaputratvād brāhmaṇyaṁ samavāpsyasi. gobrāhmaṇakṛte prāṇān hutvātmīyān raṇājire ॥13-119-21॥
[इतः (itaḥ) - from here; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; राजपुत्रत्वात् (rājaputratvāt) - due to princeliness; ब्राह्मण्यं (brāhmaṇyam) - brāhmaṇa-hood; समवाप्स्यसि (samavāpsyasi) - you will obtain; गोब्राह्मणकृते (gobrāhmaṇakṛte) - for the sake of cows and brāhmaṇas; प्राणान् (prāṇān) - lives; हुत्वा (hutvā) - having offered; आत्मीयान् (ātmīyān) - your own; रणाजिरे (raṇājire) - on the battlefield;]
(From here, you, due to princeliness, brāhmaṇa-hood will obtain. For the sake of cows and brāhmaṇas, lives having offered, your own, on the battlefield.)
From here, due to your being a prince, you will attain brāhmaṇa-hood. For the sake of cows and brāhmaṇas, having offered your own life on the battlefield. (13-119-21)
राजपुत्रसुखं प्राप्य ऋतूंश्चैवाप्तदक्षिणान्। अथ मोदिष्यसे स्वर्गे ब्रह्मभूतोऽव्ययः सुखी ॥१३-११९-२२॥
rājaputrasukhaṁ prāpya ṛtūṁścaivāptadakṣiṇān। atha modiṣyase svarge brahmabhūto'vyayaḥ sukhī ॥13-119-22॥
[राजपुत्रसुखं (rājaputrasukham) - the happiness of a prince; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having obtained; ऋतूंश् (ṛtūn) - seasons; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; आप्तदक्षिणान् (āptadakṣiṇān) - those whose gifts have been acquired; अथ (atha) - then; मोदिष्यसे (modiṣyase) - you shall rejoice; स्वर्गे (svarge) - in heaven; ब्रह्मभूतः (brahmabhūtaḥ) - having become Brahman; अव्ययः (avyayaḥ) - imperishable; सुखी (sukhī) - happy;]
(Having obtained the happiness of a prince and also the seasons whose gifts have indeed been acquired, then you shall rejoice in heaven, having become Brahman, imperishable, happy.)
After experiencing princely happiness and enjoying the fruits of the seasons with duly acquired gifts, then you will rejoice in heaven, having become Brahman—imperishable and blissful. (13-119-22)
तिर्यग्योन्याः शूद्रतामभ्युपैति; शूद्रो वैश्यत्वं क्षत्रियत्वं च वैश्यः। वृत्तश्लाघी क्षत्रियो ब्राह्मणत्वं; स्वर्गं पुण्यं ब्राह्मणः साधुवृत्तः ॥१३-११९-२३॥
tiryagyonyāḥ śūdratām abhyupaiti; śūdraḥ vaiśyatvaṃ kṣatriyatvaṃ ca vaiśyaḥ. vṛttaślāghī kṣatriyo brāhmaṇatvam; svargaṃ puṇyaṃ brāhmaṇaḥ sādhuvṛttaḥ ॥13-119-23॥
[तिर्यग्योन्याः (tiryagyonyāḥ) - from (the) animal womb; शूद्रताम् (śūdratām) - the state of a Śūdra; अभ्युपैति (abhyupaiti) - attains; शूद्रः (śūdraḥ) - a Śūdra; वैश्यत्वम् (vaiśyatvam) - the state of a Vaiśya; क्षत्रियत्वम् (kṣatriyatvam) - the state of a Kṣatriya; च (ca) - and; वैश्यः (vaiśyaḥ) - a Vaiśya; वृत्तश्लाघी (vṛttaślāghī) - one praiseworthy in conduct; क्षत्रियः (kṣatriyaḥ) - a Kṣatriya; ब्राह्मणत्वम् (brāhmaṇatvam) - the state of a Brāhmaṇa; स्वर्गम् (svargam) - heaven; पुण्यम् (puṇyam) - merit; ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - a Brāhmaṇa; साधुवृत्तः (sādhuvṛttaḥ) - of good conduct;]
(From the animal womb, attains the state of a Śūdra; a Śūdra, the state of a Vaiśya, and a Vaiśya (attains) the state of a Kṣatriya. Praiseworthy in conduct, the Kṣatriya (attains) the state of a Brāhmaṇa; heaven and merit, a Brāhmaṇa of good conduct.)
From an animal birth, one attains the condition of a Śūdra; a Śūdra may reach the status of a Vaiśya, and a Vaiśya that of a Kṣatriya. A Kṣatriya whose conduct is praiseworthy becomes a Brāhmaṇa; and a Brāhmaṇa of good conduct attains heaven and merit. (13-119-23)
