एवमुक्त्वा कुरून्सर्वान्भीष्मः शान्तनवस्तदा। तूष्णीं बभूव कौरव्यः स मुहूर्तमरिंदम ॥१३-१५४-१॥
evam uktvā kurūn sarvān bhīṣmaḥ śāntanavas tadā। tūṣṇīṃ babhūva kauravyaḥ sa muhūrtam ariṃ-dama ॥13-154-1॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having said; कुरून् (kurūn) - the Kuru-s (descendants of Kuru); सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhīṣma; शान्तनवः (śāntanavaḥ) - son of Śāntanu; तदा (tadā) - then; तूष्णीं (tūṣṇīm) - in silence; बभूव (babhūva) - became; कौरव्यः (kauravyaḥ) - descendant of Kuru; स (sa) - he; मुहूर्तम् (muhūrtam) - for a moment; अरिंदम (ariṃdama) - subduer of enemies;]
(Thus having said all the Kurus, Bhīṣma, the son of Śāntanu, then became silent, the descendant of Kuru, he, for a moment, subduer of enemies.)
Having thus addressed all the Kurus, Bhīṣma, the son of Śāntanu, then became silent; that descendant of Kuru, subduer of enemies, remained so for a moment. (13-154-1)
धारयामास चात्मानं धारणासु यथाक्रमम्। तस्योर्ध्वमगमन्प्राणाः संनिरुद्धा महात्मनः ॥१३-१५४-२॥
dhārayāmāsa cātmānaṃ dhāraṇāsu yathākramaṃ। tasyordhvamagamanprāṇāḥ saṃniruddhā mahātmanaḥ॥13-154-2॥
[धारयामास (dhārayāmāsa) - he sustained; he maintained; च (ca) - and; आत्मानं (ātmānaṃ) - himself; धारणासु (dhāraṇāsu) - in the dhāraṇās (yogic concentrations); यथाक्रमम् (yathā-kramam) - according to order; तस्य (tasya) - his; ऊर्ध्वम् (ūrdhvam) - upwards; अगमन् (agaman) - went; प्राणाः (prāṇāḥ) - vital airs; संनिरुद्धाः (saṃniruddhāḥ) - restrained; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - of the great-souled one;]
(He sustained himself in the dhāraṇās according to order, and the restrained vital airs of the great-souled one went upwards.)
He maintained himself successively in each yogic concentration, and then the vital airs of that great-souled one, being restrained, ascended upwards. (13-154-2)
इदमाश्चर्यमासीच्च मध्ये तेषां महात्मनाम्। यद्यन्मुञ्चति गात्राणां स शन्तनुसुतस्तदा ॥ तत्तद्विशल्यं भवति योगयुक्तस्य तस्य वै ॥१३-१५४-३॥
idam āścaryam āsīc ca madhye teṣāṃ mahātmanām। yad yan muñcati gātrāṇāṃ sa śantanu-sutas tadā ॥ tat tad viśalyaṃ bhavati yoga-yuktasya tasya vai ॥13-154-3॥
[इदम् (idam) - this; आश्चर्यम् (āścaryam) - wonder; marvel; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; च (ca) - and; मध्ये (madhye) - among; in the midst of; तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; महात्मनाम् (mahātmanām) - of the great souls; यत् (yat) - whatever; यन् (yan) - whichever; मुञ्चति (muñcati) - releases; removes; गात्राणाम् (gātrāṇām) - of the limbs; सः (saḥ) - he; शन्तनुसुतः (śantanu-sutaḥ) - the son of Śantanu; तदा (tadā) - then; तत् (tat) - that; तत् (tat) - that; विशल्यम् (viśalyam) - free from arrows; unwounded; भवति (bhavati) - becomes; योगयुक्तस्य (yoga-yuktasya) - of the one endowed with yoga; तस्य (tasya) - his; वै (vai) - indeed;]
(This marvel was and among them of the great souls. Whatever whichever releases of the limbs, he the son of Śantanu then, that that becomes unwounded of the one endowed with yoga, his indeed. (13-154-3))
This was a marvel among those great souls: Whenever the son of Śantanu removed any arrow from his limbs, it instantly became unwounded because he was endowed with yoga, indeed. (13-154-3)
क्षणेन प्रेक्षतां तेषां विशल्यः सोऽभवत्तदा। तं दृष्ट्वा विस्मिताः सर्वे वासुदेवपुरोगमाः ॥ सह तैर्मुनिभिः सर्वैस्तदा व्यासादिभिर्नृप ॥१३-१५४-४॥
kṣaṇena prekṣatāṃ teṣāṃ viśalyaḥ so'bhavattadā। taṃ dṛṣṭvā vismitāḥ sarve vāsudeva-purogamāḥ ॥ saha tair munibhiḥ sarvaiḥ tadā vyāsa-ādibhir nṛpa ॥13-154-4॥
[क्षणेन (kṣaṇena) - in a moment; प्रेक्षतां (prekṣatām) - of those watching; तेषां (teṣāṃ) - of them; विशल्यः (viśalyaḥ) - free from arrows; सः (saḥ) - he; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; तदा (tadā) - then; तं (taṃ) - him; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; विस्मिताः (vismitāḥ) - astonished; सर्वे (sarve) - all; वासुदेवपुरोगमाः (vāsudeva-purogamāḥ) - with Vāsudeva at the front; सह (saha) - together with; तैः (taiḥ) - by those; मुनिभिः (munibhiḥ) - by sages; सर्वैः (sarvaiḥ) - by all; तदा (tadā) - then; व्यासादिभिः (vyāsa-ādibhiḥ) - by Vyāsa and others; नृप (nṛpa) - O king;]
(In a moment, while they watched, he became free from arrows then. Having seen him, all, with Vāsudeva at the front, were astonished. Together with all those sages then, with Vyāsa and others, O king.)
O king, in a moment, as they watched, he became free of arrows. Seeing him, all, headed by Vāsudeva, along with all those sages—Vyāsa and others—were astonished. (13-154-4)
संनिरुद्धस्तु तेनात्मा सर्वेष्वायतनेषु वै। जगाम भित्त्वा मूर्धानं दिवमभ्युत्पपात च ॥१३-१५४-५॥
saṁniruddhas tu tenātmā sarveṣv āyataneṣu vai। jagāma bhittvā mūrdhānaṁ divam abhyutpapāta ca ॥13-154-5॥
[संनिरुद्धः (saṁniruddhaḥ) - restrained; तु (tu) - but; तेन (tena) - by him; आत्मा (ātmā) - self; सर्वेषु (sarveṣu) - in all; आयतनेषु (āyataneṣu) - abodes; वै (vai) - indeed; जगाम (jagāma) - departed; भित्त्वा (bhittvā) - having pierced; मूर्धानम् (mūrdhānam) - the crown of the head; दिवम् (divam) - heaven; अभ्युत्पपात (abhyutpapāta) - ascended; च (ca) - and;]
(But restrained by him, the self, indeed, in all abodes, departed, having pierced the crown of the head, to heaven, and ascended.)
But the self, restrained by him, indeed, departed from all the abodes, pierced the crown of the head, and ascended to heaven. (13-154-5)
महोल्केव च भीष्मस्य मूर्धदेशाज्जनाधिप। निःसृत्याकाशमाविश्य क्षणेनान्तरधीयत ॥१३-१५४-६॥
maholkeva ca bhīṣmasya mūrdhadeśāj janādhipa। niḥsṛtya ākāśam āviśya kṣaṇena antaradhīyata ॥13-154-6॥
[महोल्केव (maholka-iva) - like a great meteor; च (ca) - and; भीष्मस्य (bhīṣmasya) - of Bhishma; मूर्धदेशात् (mūrdhadeśāt) - from the crown of (his) head; जनाधिप (janādhipa) - O ruler of men; निःसृत्य (niḥsṛtya) - having emerged; आकाशम् (ākāśam) - the sky; आविश्य (āviśya) - having entered; क्षणेन (kṣaṇena) - in a moment; अन्तरधीयत (antaradhīyata) - disappeared;]
(Like a great meteor and from the crown of Bhishma's head, O ruler of men, having emerged, entering the sky, in a moment disappeared.)
O ruler of men, just like a great meteor, (the energy) emerged from the crown of Bhishma's head, entered the sky, and disappeared in a moment. (13-154-6)
एवं स नृपशार्दूल नृपः शान्तनवस्तदा। समयुज्यत लोकैः स्वैर्भरतानां कुलोद्वहः ॥१३-१५४-७॥
evaṃ sa nṛpaśārdūla nṛpaḥ śāntanavas tadā। samayujyata lokaiḥ svair bharatānāṃ kulodvahaḥ ॥13-154-7॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; स (sa) - he; नृपशार्दूल (nṛpaśārdūla) - tiger among kings; नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - king; शान्तनवः (śāntanavaḥ) - son of Śāntanu; तदा (tadā) - then; समयुज्यत (samayujyata) - was united; लोकैः (lokaiḥ) - with worlds; स्वैः (svaiḥ) - with his own; भरतानां (bharatānāṃ) - of the Bharatas; कुलोद्वहः (kulodvahaḥ) - the uplifter of the family;]
(Thus he, the tiger among kings, the king, the son of Śāntanu, then was united with the worlds with his own, the uplifter of the family of the Bharatas.)
Thus, that kingly hero, the son of Śāntanu and best of kings, then was united with his own people in the other worlds—the upholder of the Bharata lineage. (13-154-7)
ततस्त्वादाय दारूणि गन्धांश्च विविधान्बहून्। चितां चक्रुर्महात्मानः पाण्डवा विदुरस्तथा ॥ युयुत्सुश्चापि कौरव्यः प्रेक्षकास्त्वितरेऽभवन् ॥१३-१५४-८॥
tatastvādāya dārūṇi gandhāṁśca vividhān bahūn। citāṁ cakruḥ mahātmānaḥ pāṇḍavā viduras tathā॥ yuyutsuś cāpi kauravyaḥ prekṣakās tvitare 'bhavan॥13-154-8॥
[ततः (tatas) - then; त्व् (tv) - you (but here, sandhi with 'ādāya'); आदाय (ādāya) - having taken; दारूणि (dārūṇi) - wood; गन्धान् (gandhān) - fragrances; च (ca) - and; विविधान् (vividhān) - various; बहून् (bahūn) - many; चिताम् (citām) - funeral pyre; चक्रुः (cakruḥ) - made; महात्मानः (mahātmānaḥ) - great-souled ones; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - Pāṇḍavas; विदुरः (viduraḥ) - Vidura; तथा (tathā) - also; युयुत्सुः (yuyutsuḥ) - Yuyutsu; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; कौरव्यः (kauravyaḥ) - the Kaurava (Yuyutsu, son of Kuru); प्रेक्षकाः (prekṣakāḥ) - onlookers; त्व् (tv) - indeed (sandhi); इतर (itara) - the others; अभवन् (abhavan) - became were;]
(Then, having taken woods, fragrances, various many, the great-souled ones—the Pāṇḍavas, also Vidura, and Yuyutsu also, the Kaurava—made the funeral pyre; the others indeed were onlookers.)
Then, having collected much wood and many kinds of fragrances, the great-souled ones—the Pāṇḍavas, Vidura, and Yuyutsu, the Kaurava—built the funeral pyre; the others became mere onlookers. (13-154-8)
युधिष्ठिरस्तु गाङ्गेयं विदुरश्च महामतिः। छादयामासतुरुभौ क्षौमैर्माल्यैश्च कौरवम् ॥१३-१५४-९॥
yudhiṣṭhirastu gāṅgeyaṁ viduraśca mahāmatiḥ। chādayāmāsaturubhau kṣaumairmālyaśca kauravam॥13-154-9॥
[युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira; तु (tu) - but; गाङ्गेयम् (gāṅgeyām) - Gāṅgeya (son of Ganga, Bhishma); विदुरः (viduraḥ) - Vidura; च (ca) - and; महामतिः (mahāmatiḥ) - of great intellect; छादयामासतुः (chādayāmāsatuḥ) - both covered; उभौ (ubhau) - the two; क्षौमैः (kṣaumaiḥ) - with linen garments; माल्यैः (mālyaiḥ) - with garlands; च (ca) - and; कौरवम् (kauravam) - Kaurava (Bhishma);]
(Yudhishthira but Gāṅgeya Vidura and of great intellect both covered the two with linen garments, with garlands and Kaurava.)
But Yudhishthira and Vidura, both of great intellect, covered Bhishma, the son of Ganga and Kaurava, with linen garments and garlands. (13-154-9)
धारयामास तस्याथ युयुत्सुश्छत्रमुत्तमम्। चामरव्यजने शुभ्रे भीमसेनार्जुनावुभौ ॥ उष्णीषे पर्यगृह्णीतां माद्रीपुत्रावुभौ तदा ॥१३-१५४-१०॥
dhārayāmāsa tasyātha yuyutsuś chatram uttamam। cāmaravyajane śubhre bhīmasenārjunāvubhau ॥ uṣṇīṣe paryagṛhṇītāṃ mādrīputrāvubhau tadā ॥13-154-10॥
[धारयामास (dhārayāmāsa) - he held; he bore; तस्य (tasya) - of him; his; अथ (atha) - then; thereupon; युयुत्सुः (yuyutsuḥ) - Yuyutsu (proper noun); छत्रम् (chatram) - umbrella; parasol; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - best; excellent; चामरव्यजने (cāmaravyajane) - chamara-fans (fly-whisks); शुभ्रे (śubhre) - white (dual); भीमसेनार्जुनौ (bhīmasenārjunau) - Bhimasena and Arjuna (dual); उभौ (ubhau) - both; उष्णीषे (uṣṇīṣe) - on the turban (head-dress, dual); पर्यगृह्णीताम् (paryagṛhṇītām) - held (dual); माद्रीपुत्रौ (mādrīputrau) - the two sons of Madri (Nakula and Sahadeva); उभौ (ubhau) - both; तदा (tadā) - then; at that time;]
(He held his then Yuyutsu umbrella excellent. The chamara-fans white Bhimasena-Arjuna both. On the turban held the sons of Madri both then. (13-154-10))
Then Yuyutsu held his excellent umbrella; Bhimasena and Arjuna, both, held the two white chamara-fans; the two sons of Madri, both, at that time, held the head-dress (turban). (13-154-10)
स्त्रियः कौरवनाथस्य भीष्मं कुरुकुलोद्भवम्। तालवृन्तान्युपादाय पर्यवीजन्समन्ततः ॥१३-१५४-११॥
striyaḥ kauravanāthasya bhīṣmaṃ kurukulodbhavam। tālavṛntāny upādāya paryavījan samantataḥ ॥13-154-11॥
[स्त्रियः (striyaḥ) - women; कौरवनाथस्य (kauravanāthasya) - of the lord of the Kauravas; भीष्मं (bhīṣmam) - Bhīṣma; कुरुकुलोद्भवम् (kurukulodbhavam) - born of the Kuru lineage; तालवृन्तानि (tālavṛntāni) - palm-fans; उपादाय (upādāya) - taking up; पर्यवीजन् (paryavījan) - fanned around; समन्ततः (samantataḥ) - on all sides;]
(Women of the lord of the Kauravas, Bhīṣma, born of the Kuru lineage, taking up palm-fans, fanned around on all sides.)
The women took up palm-fans and fanned Bhīṣma, the lord of the Kauravas, who was born of the Kuru lineage, on all sides. (13-154-11)
ततोऽस्य विधिवच्चक्रुः पितृमेधं महात्मनः। याजका जुहुवुश्चाग्निं जगुः सामानि सामगाः ॥१३-१५४-१२॥
tato'sya vidhivaccakruḥ pitṛmedhaṃ mahātmanaḥ। yājakā juhuvuścāgniṃ jaguḥ sāmani sāmagāḥ॥13-154-12॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; from that; afterwards; अस्य (asya) - of him; of this; विधिवत् (vidhivat) - according to rules; properly; चक्रुः (cakruḥ) - they performed; they did; पितृमेधं (pitṛmedham) - funeral rite; ancestor-offering; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - of the great-souled; of the high-souled; याजकाः (yājakāḥ) - priests; sacrificers; जुहुवुश्च (juhuvuś ca) - and they offered (oblations); अग्निम् (agniṃ) - fire; जगुः (jaguḥ) - they chanted; they sang; सामानि (sāmani) - Sāman chants; songs of Sāma Veda; सामगाः (sāmagāḥ) - singers of Sāman; reciters of Sāma Veda;]
(Then of him according to rules they performed the funeral rite of the great-souled. The priests also offered (oblations) into fire; the singers of Sāman chanted the Sāman hymns.)
Then, according to the proper rites, they performed the funeral sacrifice of the great-souled one. The priests offered oblations into the fire, and the singers of the Sāman chanted the Sāman hymns. (13-154-12)
ततश्चन्दनकाष्ठैश्च तथा कालेयकैरपि। कालागरुप्रभृतिभिर्गन्धैश्चोच्चावचैस्तथा ॥१३-१५४-१३॥
tataś candanakāṣṭhaiś ca tathā kāleyakair api। kālāgaru-prabhṛtibhir gandhaiś coccāvacais tathā ॥13-154-13॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; चन्दनकाष्ठैः (candanakāṣṭhaiḥ) - by sandalwood pieces; च (ca) - and; तथा (tathā) - likewise; कालेयकैः (kāleyakaiḥ) - by kāleyaka (a fragrant substance); अपि (api) - also; कालागरुप्रभृतिभिः (kālāgaru-prabhṛtibhiḥ) - by kālāgaru and the like (beginning with kālāgaru); गन्धैः (gandhaiḥ) - by perfumes; च (ca) - and; उच्चावचैः (uccāvacaiḥ) - by those both superior and inferior; तथा (tathā) - likewise;]
(Thereafter, by sandalwood pieces and likewise by kāleyaka also, by kālāgaru and the like perfumes and by those (perfumes) both superior and inferior likewise.)
Thereafter, with sandalwood pieces, kāleyaka, kālāgaru and similar perfumes, both superior and inferior, likewise (he honored). (13-154-13)
समवच्छाद्य गाङ्गेयं प्रज्वाल्य च हुताशनम्। अपसव्यमकुर्वन्त धृतराष्ट्रमुखा नृपाः ॥१३-१५४-१४॥
samavacchādya gāṅgeyaṁ prajvālya ca hutāśanam। apasavyamakurvanta dhṛtarāṣṭramukhā nṛpāḥ ॥13-154-14॥
[समवच्छाद्य (samavacchādya) - having completely covered; गाङ्गेयं (gāṅgeyaṁ) - pertaining to Gangā (the river); प्रज्वाल्य (prajvālya) - having kindled; च (ca) - and; हुताशनम् (hutāśanam) - fire; अपसव्यम् (apasavyam) - with the left (direction); अकुर्वन्त (akurvanta) - they performed; धृतराष्ट्रमुखाः (dhṛtarāṣṭramukhāḥ) - headed by Dhṛtarāṣṭra; नृपाः (nṛpāḥ) - kings;]
(Having completely covered [the body] pertaining to Gangā, having kindled fire and with the left (direction), the kings headed by Dhṛtarāṣṭra performed [rites].)
The kings headed by Dhṛtarāṣṭra, having fully covered the body of the one belonging to Gangā, lit the fire and performed the rites with the leftward (counterclockwise) direction. (13-154-14)
संस्कृत्य च कुरुश्रेष्ठं गाङ्गेयं कुरुसत्तमाः। जग्मुर्भागीरथीतीरमृषिजुष्टं कुरूद्वहाः ॥१३-१५४-१५॥
saṁskṛtya ca kuruśreṣṭhaṁ gāṅgeyaṁ kurusattamāḥ। jagmur bhāgīrathī-tīram ṛṣi-juṣṭaṁ kurūdvahāḥ ॥13-154-15॥
[संस्कृत्य (saṁskṛtya) - having performed ceremonies for; च (ca) - and; कुरुश्रेष्ठं (kuruśreṣṭham) - the foremost of Kurus; गाङ्गेयं (gāṅgeyaṁ) - son of Gaṅgā; कुरुसत्तमाः (kurusattamāḥ) - the eminent Kurus; जग्मुः (jagmuḥ) - went; भागीरथीतीरम् (bhāgīrathī-tīram) - the bank of Bhāgīrathī (Ganges); ऋषिजुष्टं (ṛṣi-juṣṭam) - frequented by sages; कुरूद्वहाः (kurūdvahāḥ) - the best of the Kurus;]
(Having performed ceremonies for and the foremost of the Kurus, the son of Gaṅgā, the eminent Kurus went to the bank of Bhāgīrathī frequented by sages, the best of the Kurus. (13-154-15))
After performing the necessary ceremonies for the foremost of the Kurus, the son of Gaṅgā, the eminent Kurus went to the bank of the Bhāgīrathī, which was frequented by sages. (13-154-15)
अनुगम्यमाना व्यासेन नारदेनासितेन च। कृष्णेन भरतस्त्रीभिर्ये च पौराः समागताः ॥१३-१५४-१६॥
anugamyamānā vyāsena nāradenasitena ca. kṛṣṇena bharatastrībhirye ca paurāḥ samāgatāḥ ॥13-154-16॥
[अनुगम्यमाना (anugamyamānā) - being accompanied; व्यासेन (vyāsena) - by Vyāsa; नारदेन (nāradena) - by Nārada; असितेन (asitena) - by Asita; च (ca) - and; कृष्णेन (kṛṣṇena) - by Kṛṣṇa; भरतस्त्रीभिः (bharatastrībhiḥ) - by the women of the Bhāratas; ये (ye) - who; च (ca) - and; पौराः (paurāḥ) - citizens; समागताः (samāgatāḥ) - assembled;]
(Being accompanied by Vyāsa, by Nārada, by Asita and by Kṛṣṇa, by the women of the Bhāratas, and also the citizens who had assembled.)
Accompanied by Vyāsa, Nārada, Asita, Kṛṣṇa, the women of the Bhāratas, and the assembled citizens. (13-154-16)
उदकं चक्रिरे चैव गाङ्गेयस्य महात्मनः। विधिवत्क्षत्रियश्रेष्ठाः स च सर्वो जनस्तदा ॥१३-१५४-१७॥
udakaṁ cakrire caiva gāṅgeyasya mahātmanaḥ। vidhivat kṣatriyaśreṣṭhāḥ sa ca sarvo janas tadā ॥13-154-17॥
[उदकं (udakaṁ) - water (offering for the departed); चक्रिरे (cakrire) - they performed (made, did); च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; गाङ्गेयस्य (gāṅgeyasya) - of the son of Ganga; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - great-souled; विधिवत् (vidhivat) - as per injunction; according to the rules; क्षत्रियश्रेष्ठाः (kṣatriyaśreṣṭhāḥ) - best among the kṣatriyas; स (sa) - he; च (ca) - and; सर्वः (sarvaḥ) - all (everyone); जनः (janaḥ) - people; तदा (tadā) - then; at that time;]
(Water (offering) they performed and indeed for Gāṅgeya, the great-souled; as per injunction the best among Kṣatriyas, he and all people then.)
Then, the best among the Kṣatriyas and all the people made water offerings according to the injunctions for the great-souled son of Ganga. (13-154-17)
ततो भागीरथी देवी तनयस्योदके कृते। उत्थाय सलिलात्तस्माद्रुदती शोकलालसा ॥१३-१५४-१८॥
tato bhāgīrathī devī tanayasya udake kṛte। utthāya salilāt tasmāt rudatī śokalālasā ॥13-154-18॥

(Then Bhagirathi goddess, of the son in the water having been made, having risen from the water from that, weeping, afflicted with grief.)
Then Goddess Bhagirathi, after performing the water offering for her son, rose from that water, weeping and overcome with grief. (13-154-18)
परिदेवयती तत्र कौरवानभ्यभाषत। निबोधत यथावृत्तमुच्यमानं मयानघाः ॥१३-१५४-१९॥
paridevayatī tatra kauravān abhyabhāṣata. nibodhata yathāvṛttam ucyamānaṃ mayānaghāḥ ॥13-154-19॥

राजवृत्तेन सम्पन्नः प्रज्ञयाभिजनेन च। सत्कर्ता कुरुवृद्धानां पितृभक्तो दृढव्रतः ॥१३-१५४-२०॥

जामदग्न्येन रामेण पुरा यो न पराजितः। दिव्यैरस्त्रैर्महावीर्यः स हतोऽद्य शिखण्डिना ॥१३-१५४-२१॥
jāmadagnyena rāmeṇa purā yo na parājitaḥ. divyaiḥ astraiḥ mahā-vīryaḥ sa hataḥ adya śikhaṇḍinā ॥13-154-21॥

(By Jāmadagnya Rāma formerly who not defeated, by divine weapons greatly powerful, he slain today by Śikhaṇḍin.)
He who was not defeated formerly even by Jāmadagnya Rāma, the greatly powerful wielder of divine weapons, has been slain today by Śikhaṇḍin. (13-154-21)
अश्मसारमयं नूनं हृदयं मम पार्थिवाः। अपश्यन्त्याः प्रियं पुत्रं यत्र दीर्यति मेऽद्य वै ॥१३-१५४-२२॥
aśmasāramayaṁ nūnaṁ hṛdayaṁ mama pārthivāḥ। apaśyantyāḥ priyaṁ putraṁ yatra dīryati me'dya vai ॥13-154-22॥
[अश्मसारमयं (aśmasāramayam) - composed of essence of stone; नूनं (nūnam) - indeed; हृदयं (hṛdayam) - heart; मम (mama) - my; पार्थिवाः (pārthivāḥ) - O kings; अपश्यन्त्याः (apaśyantyāḥ) - of one not seeing; प्रियं (priyam) - beloved; पुत्रं (putram) - son; यत्र (yatra) - where; दीर्यति (dīryati) - is torn; मे (me) - my; अद्य (adya) - today; वै (vai) - indeed;]
(The heart composed of stone's essence indeed, my O kings; of one not seeing the beloved son, where my (heart) is torn today indeed.)
O kings, indeed my heart must be made of stone, for today my heart is torn where I, not seeing my beloved son, (still live). (13-154-22)
समेतं पार्थिवं क्षत्रं काशिपुर्यां स्वयंवरे। विजित्यैकरथेनाजौ कन्यास्ता यो जहार ह ॥१३-१५४-२३॥
sametaṁ pārthivaṁ kṣatraṁ kāśipuryāṁ svayaṁvare। vijityai-karathenājau kanyāstā yo jahāra ha ॥13-154-23॥
[समेतं (sametam) - assembled; together; पार्थिवं (pārthivam) - kings; rulers; क्षत्रं (kṣatram) - kṣatriya class; warriors; काशिपुर्यां (kāśipuryām) - in the city of Kāśi; स्वयंवरे (svayaṁvare) - at the svayaṁvara (self-choice ceremony); विजित्य (vijitya) - having conquered; एकरथेन (eka-rathena) - with a single chariot; अजौ (ajau) - in battle; कन्याः (kanyāḥ) - maidens; girls; ता (tā) - those; यो (yaḥ) - who; जहार (jahāra) - carried off; abducted; ह (ha) - indeed; verily;]
(Assembled kings and kṣatriyas in the city of Kāśi at the svayaṁvara, having conquered (them) with a single chariot in battle, those maidens who he carried off indeed.)
He who, having conquered in battle with a single chariot the assembled kings and kṣatriyas at the svayaṁvara in the city of Kāśi, indeed carried off those maidens. (13-154-23)
यस्य नास्ति बले तुल्यः पृथिव्यामपि कश्चन। हतं शिखण्डिना श्रुत्वा यन्न दीर्यति मे मनः ॥१३-१५४-२४॥
yasya nāsti bale tulyaḥ pṛthivyām api kaścana। hataṃ śikhaṇḍinā śrutvā yan na dīryati me manaḥ॥13-154-24॥
[यस्य (yasya) - of whom; नास्ति (nāsti) - there is not; बले (bale) - in strength; तुल्यः (tulyaḥ) - equal; पृथिव्याम् (pṛthivyām) - in the earth; अपि (api) - even; कश्चन (kaścana) - anyone; हतम् (hatam) - slain; शिखण्डिना (śikhaṇḍinā) - by Śikhaṇḍin; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; यत् (yat) - which; न (na) - not; दीर्यति (dīryati) - is torn; मे (me) - my; मनः (manaḥ) - mind;]
(Of whom there is not in strength an equal on earth even anyone, slain by Śikhaṇḍin, having heard which my mind is not torn.)
My mind is not disturbed upon hearing that he, who had no equal in strength anywhere on the earth, was slain by Śikhaṇḍin. (13-154-24)
जामदग्न्यः कुरुक्षेत्रे युधि येन महात्मना। पीडितो नातियत्नेन निहतः स शिखण्डिना ॥१३-१५४-२५॥
jāmadagnyaḥ kurukṣetre yudhi yena mahātmanā। pīḍito nātiyatnena nihataḥ sa śikhaṇḍinā॥13-154-25॥

(Jāmadagnya in Kurukshetra in battle by whom, by the great-souled, afflicted, not with much effort, slain, he, by Śikhaṇḍin.)
Jāmadagnya was afflicted in battle at Kurukshetra by the great-souled one, and he was slain by Śikhaṇḍin without much effort. (13-154-25)
एवंविधं बहु तदा विलपन्तीं महानदीम्। आश्वासयामास तदा साम्ना दामोदरो विभुः ॥१३-१५४-२६॥
evaṃvidhaṃ bahu tadā vilapantīṃ mahānadīm। āśvāsayāmāsa tadā sāmnā dāmodaro vibhuḥ॥13-154-26॥
[एवंविधं (evaṃvidham) - of such kind; as this; such; बहु (bahu) - much; greatly; for a long time; तदा (tadā) - then; at that time; विलपन्तीं (vilapantīm) - lamenting; bewailing; महानदीम् (mahānadīm) - the great river; (accusative singular feminine); आश्वासयामास (āśvāsayāmāsa) - consoled; comforted; तदा (tadā) - then; at that time; साम्ना (sāmnā) - with gentle words; with conciliation; दामोदरो (dāmodaraḥ) - Dāmodara; (proper noun); विभुः (vibhuḥ) - the powerful one; the lord;]
(Such, much then lamenting great river, consoled then with gentle words Dāmodara the powerful one.)
Seeing the great river thus lamenting greatly, Dāmodara, the powerful one, then consoled her with gentle words. (13-154-26)
समाश्वसिहि भद्रे त्वं मा शुचः शुभदर्शने। गतः स परमां सिद्धिं तव पुत्रो न संशयः ॥१३-१५४-२७॥
samāśvasihi bhadre tvaṃ mā śucaḥ śubhadarśane। gataḥ sa paramāṃ siddhiṃ tava putro na saṃśayaḥ ॥13-154-27॥

(Be comforted, O auspicious lady, you, do not grieve, O fortunate-seeming one; has gone, he, supreme attainment, your son, not, doubt.)
Be comforted, O good lady, do not grieve, O one of auspicious appearance. Your son has attained the highest state, there is no doubt. (13-154-27)
वसुरेष महातेजाः शापदोषेण शोभने। मनुष्यतामनुप्राप्तो नैनं शोचितुमर्हसि ॥१३-१५४-२८॥
vasureṣa mahātejāḥ śāpadoṣeṇa śobhane। manuṣyatāmanuprāpto nainaṃ śocitumarhasi ॥13-154-28॥
[वसुः (vasuḥ) - a Vasu; (divine being); एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; (he); महातेजाः (mahātejāḥ) - of great splendor; शापदोषेण (śāpa-doṣeṇa) - by the defect (result) of a curse; शोभने (śobhane) - O beautiful one; मनुष्यताम् (manuṣyatām) - human state; अनुप्राप्तः (anuprāptaḥ) - has attained; न (na) - not; एनम् (enam) - this (him); शोचितुम् (śocitum) - to grieve; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought; ॥१३-१५४-२८॥ (॥13-154-28॥) -;]
(A Vasu, this one of great splendor, by the fault of a curse, O beautiful one, the human state has attained; not this (him) to grieve you ought.)
This is a Vasu, one of great splendor, who, due to the fault of a curse, O beautiful one, has attained a human state; you ought not to grieve for him. (13-154-28)
स एष क्षत्रधर्मेण युध्यमानो रणाजिरे। धनञ्जयेन निहतो नैष नुन्नः शिखण्डिना ॥१३-१५४-२९॥
sa eṣa kṣatradharmeṇa yudhyamānaḥ raṇājire. dhanañjayena nihataḥ naiṣa nunnaḥ śikhaṇḍinā ॥13-154-29॥
[स (sa) - he; एष (eṣa) - this; क्षत्रधर्मेण (kṣatradharmeṇa) - by the kṣatriya duty; युध्यमानः (yudhyamānaḥ) - fighting; रणाजिरे (raṇājire) - on the battlefield; धनञ्जयेन (dhanañjayena) - by Dhanañjaya (Arjuna); निहतः (nihataḥ) - slain; न (na) - not; एष (eṣa) - this; नुन्नः (nunnaḥ) - struck down; शिखण्डिना (śikhaṇḍinā) - by Śikhaṇḍin;]
(He this, by the kṣatriya duty fighting on the battlefield, by Dhanañjaya slain; not this struck down by Śikhaṇḍin.)
He, this very one, fighting on the battlefield according to the duty of a kṣatriya, was slain by Dhanañjaya; he was not struck down by Śikhaṇḍin. (13-154-29)
भीष्मं हि कुरुशार्दूलमुद्यतेषुं महारणे। न शक्तः संयुगे हन्तुं साक्षादपि शतक्रतुः ॥१३-१५४-३०॥
bhīṣmaṃ hi kuruśārdūlamudyateṣuṃ mahāraṇe। na śaktaḥ saṃyuge hantuṃ sākṣādapi śatakratuḥ ॥13-154-30॥

(Bhishma indeed the tiger among the Kurus with raised arrows in the great battle not capable in battle to kill even directly even Indra.)
Even Indra himself is not capable of slaying Bhishma, the tiger among the Kurus with raised arrows, in the great battle. (13-154-30)
स्वच्छन्देन सुतस्तुभ्यं गतः स्वर्गं शुभानने। न शक्ताः स्युर्निहन्तुं हि रणे तं सर्वदेवताः ॥१३-१५४-३१॥
svacchandena sutastubhyaṃ gataḥ svargaṃ śubhānane. na śaktāḥ syurnihantuṃ hi raṇe taṃ sarvadevatāḥ ॥13-154-31॥
[स्वच्छन्देन (svacchandena) - by free will; by his own accord; सुतः (sutaḥ) - son; तुभ्यं (tubhyaṃ) - for you; गतः (gataḥ) - has gone; स्वर्गं (svargaṃ) - to heaven; शुभानने (śubhānane) - O auspicious-faced one; न (na) - not; शक्ताः (śaktāḥ) - able; स्युः (syuḥ) - they might be; निहन्तुं (nihantuṃ) - to slay; हि (hi) - indeed; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; तं (taṃ) - him; सर्वदेवताः (sarvadevatāḥ) - all the gods;]
(By his own accord, your son has gone to heaven, O auspicious-faced one. Not able might be indeed to slay him in battle the all gods.)
By his own will, your son has gone to heaven, O auspicious-faced one. Even all the gods would not have been able to slay him in battle. (13-154-31)
तस्मान्मा त्वं सरिच्छ्रेष्ठे शोचस्व कुरुनन्दनम्। वसूनेष गतो देवि पुत्रस्ते विज्वरा भव ॥१३-१५४-३२॥
tasmān mā tvaṃ saricchreṣṭhe śocasva kurunandanam। vasūneṣa gato devi putras te vijvarā bhava॥13-154-32॥
[तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; मा (mā) - do not; त्वम् (tvam) - you; सरित्-श्रेष्ठे (sarit-śreṣṭhe) - O best of rivers; शोचस्व (śocasva) - grieve; कुरु-नन्दनम् (kuru-nandanam) - for the delight of the Kurus (Arjuna); वसून्-एष (vasūn-eṣa) - to the Vasus, this (one); गतः (gataḥ) - has gone; देवि (devi) - O goddess; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; ते (te) - your; वि-ज्वरा (vi-jvarā) - free from pain; भव (bhava) - be;]
(Therefore, do not you, O best of rivers, grieve for the delight of the Kurus; to the Vasus, this your son, O goddess, has gone—be free from pain.)
Therefore, O best of rivers, do not grieve for Arjuna; your son has gone to the Vasus, O goddess—be free from sorrow. (13-154-32)
इत्युक्ता सा तु कृष्णेन व्यासेन च सरिद्वरा। त्यक्त्वा शोकं महाराज स्वं वार्यवततार ह ॥१३-१५४-३३॥
ity-uktā sā tu kṛṣṇena vyāsena ca sarid-varā। tyaktvā śokaṃ mahārāja svaṃ vāry avatatāra ha ॥13-154-33॥
[इति-उक्ता (iti-uktā) - thus addressed; सा (sā) - she; तु (tu) - but; कृष्णेन (kṛṣṇena) - by Kṛṣṇa; व्यासेन (vyāsena) - by Vyāsa; च (ca) - and; सरिद्वरा (sarid-varā) - the chief of rivers; त्यक्त्वा (tyaktvā) - having abandoned; शोकं (śokaṃ) - sorrow; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; स्वं (svaṃ) - her own; वारि (vāri) - waters; अवततार (avatatāra) - descended; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(Thus addressed she but by Kṛṣṇa, by Vyāsa and the chief of rivers, having abandoned sorrow, O great king, her own waters indeed descended.)
O great king, thus addressed by Kṛṣṇa and Vyāsa, the chief of rivers, having abandoned her sorrow, indeed descended into her own waters. (13-154-33)
सत्कृत्य ते तां सरितं ततः कृष्णमुखा नृपाः। अनुज्ञातास्तया सर्वे न्यवर्तन्त जनाधिपाः ॥१३-१५४-३४॥
satkṛtya te tāṃ saritaṃ tataḥ kṛṣṇamukhā nṛpāḥ। anujñātāstayā sarve nyavartanta janādhipāḥ॥13-154-34॥
[सत्कृत्य (satkṛtya) - having honored; having duly respected; ते (te) - they; तां (tāṃ) - her; सरितं (saritaṃ) - river; ततः (tataḥ) - then; कृष्णमुखा (kṛṣṇamukhāḥ) - with faces blackened (ash-stained); नृपाः (nṛpāḥ) - kings; अनुज्ञातास्तया (anujñātāḥ tayā) - permitted by her; सर्वे (sarve) - all; न्यवर्तन्त (nyavartanta) - withdrew; turned back; जनाधिपाः (janādhipāḥ) - rulers of men;]
(Having honored that river, then those kings with blackened faces, all, permitted by her, withdrew—the rulers of men.)
After duly honoring that river, those kings whose faces were blackened, having received her permission, all the rulers of men withdrew. (13-154-34)
