सान्त्वयामास नारीश्च हतवीरा हतेश्वराः। विपुलैरर्थदानैश्च तदा पाण्डुसुतो नृपः ॥१३-१५३-२॥
sāntvyāmāsa nārīś ca hatavīrā hateśvarāḥ। vipulair arthadānaiś ca tadā pāṇḍusuto nṛpaḥ॥13-153-2॥

Having received principal blessings from the twice-born, the army chiefs, and the tradesmen in every way, then the foremost among upholders of dharma (the king) acted. (13-153-4)
उषित्वा शर्वरीः श्रीमान्पञ्चाशन्नगरोत्तमे। समयं कौरवाग्र्यस्य सस्मार पुरुषर्षभः ॥१३-१५३-५॥

स निर्ययौ गजपुराद्याजकैः परिवारितः। दृष्ट्वा निवृत्तमादित्यं प्रवृत्तं चोत्तरायणम् ॥१३-१५३-६॥

धृतराष्ट्रं पुरस्कृत्य गान्धारीं च यशस्विनीम्। मातरं च पृथां धीमान्भ्रातॄंश्च पुरुषर्षभः ॥१३-१५३-९॥
dhṛtarāṣṭraṃ puraskṛtya gāndhārīṃ ca yaśasvinīm। mātaraṃ ca pṛthāṃ dhīmānbhrātṝṃśca puruṣarṣabhaḥ॥13-153-9॥

जनार्दनेनानुगतो विदुरेण च धीमता। युयुत्सुना च कौरव्यो युयुधानेन चाभिभो ॥१३-१५३-१०॥
janārdanenānugato vidureṇa ca dhīmatā। yuyutsunā ca kauravyo yuyudhānena cābhibho ॥13-153-10॥

महता राजभोग्येन परिबर्हेण संवृतः। स्तूयमानो महाराज भीष्मस्याग्नीननुव्रजन् ॥१३-१५३-११॥
mahatā rājabhogyena paribarheṇa saṁvṛtaḥ। stūyamāno mahārāja bhīṣmasyāgnīn anuvrajan ॥13-153-11॥

He, covered with great royal offerings and praised, O great king, followed the funeral fires of Bhīṣma. (13-153-11)
निश्चक्राम पुरात्तस्माद्यथा देवपतिस्तथा। आससाद कुरुक्षेत्रे ततः शान्तनवं नृपम् ॥१३-१५३-१२॥
niścakrāma purāttasmādyathā devapatistathā। āsasāda kurukṣetre tataḥ śāntanavaṁ nṛpam ॥13-153-12॥
[निश्चक्राम (niścakrāma) - he went out; पुरात् (purāt) - from the city; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - from that (city); यथा (yathā) - just as; देवपतिः (devapatiḥ) - the lord of the gods; तथा (tathā) - so; आससाद (āsasāda) - he approached; कुरुक्षेत्रे (kurukṣetre) - in Kurukṣetra; ततः (tataḥ) - then; शान्तनवम् (śāntanavam) - the son of Śāntanu; नृपम् (nṛpam) - the king;]
(He went out from the city just as the lord of the gods so, he approached, in Kurukṣetra, then, the son of Śāntanu, the king.)
Just as the lord of the gods would, he went out from that city and, in Kurukṣetra, then approached King Śāntanava. (13-153-12)
उपास्यमानं व्यासेन पाराशर्येण धीमता। नारदेन च राजर्षे देवलेनासितेन च ॥१३-१५३-१३॥
upāsyamānaṁ vyāsena pārāśaryeṇa dhīmatā। nāradena ca rājarṣe devalenasitena ca ॥13-153-13॥

हतशिष्टैर्नृपैश्चान्यैर्नानादेशसमागतैः। रक्षिभिश्च महात्मानं रक्ष्यमाणं समन्ततः ॥१३-१५३-१४॥
hataśiṣṭair nṛpaiś cānyair nānādeśa-samāgataih rakṣibhiś ca mahātmānaṃ rakṣyamāṇaṃ samantataḥ ॥13-153-14॥

शयानं वीरशयने ददर्श नृपतिस्ततः। ततो रथादवारोहद्भ्रातृभिः सह धर्मराट् ॥१३-१५३-१५॥
śayānaṃ vīraśayane dadarśa nṛpatistataḥ। tato rathād avārohad bhrātṛbhiḥ saha dharmarāṭ ॥13-153-15॥

ऋत्विग्भिर्ब्रह्मकल्पैश्च भ्रातृभिश्च सहाच्युतः। आसाद्य शरतल्पस्थमृषिभिः परिवारितम् ॥१३-१५३-१७॥

(Acyuta, together with the officiating priests, those equal to Brahma, and brothers, having approached the one lying on the bed of arrows, surrounded by sages.)
Acyuta, accompanied by the officiating priests, Brahma-like sages, and his brothers, approached the one lying on the bed of arrows, who was surrounded by sages. (13-153-17)
अब्रवीद्भरतश्रेष्ठं धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः। भ्रातृभिः सह कौरव्य शयानं निम्नगासुतम् ॥१३-१५३-१८॥
abravīd bharataśreṣṭhaṃ dharmarājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ. bhrātṛbhiḥ saha kauravya śayānaṃ nimnagāsutam ॥13-153-18॥

युधिष्ठिरोऽहं नृपते नमस्ते जाह्नवीसुत। शृणोषि चेन्महाबाहो ब्रूहि किं करवाणि ते ॥१३-१५३-१९॥

प्राप्तोऽस्मि समये राजन्नग्नीनादाय ते विभो। आचार्या ब्राह्मणाश्चैव ऋत्विजो भ्रातरश्च मे ॥१३-१५३-२०॥

O king, at the appointed time I have come, O mighty one, having brought your sacred fires, along with my teachers, Brāhmaṇas, ritual priests, and brothers. (13-153-20)
पुत्रश्च ते महातेजा धृतराष्ट्रो जनेश्वरः। उपस्थितः सहामात्यो वासुदेवश्च वीर्यवान् ॥१३-१५३-२१॥
putraś ca te mahātejā dhṛtarāṣṭro janeśvaraḥ। upasthitaḥ sahāmātyo vāsudevaś ca vīryavān ॥13-153-21॥

हतशिष्टाश्च राजानः सर्वे च कुरुजाङ्गलाः। तान्पश्य कुरुशार्दूल समुन्मीलय लोचने ॥१३-१५३-२२॥
hataśiṣṭāś ca rājānaḥ sarve ca kurujāṅgalāḥ। tān paśya kuruśārdūla sammanmīlaya locane॥13-153-22॥

यच्चेह किञ्चित्कर्तव्यं तत्सर्वं प्रापितं मया। यथोक्तं भवता काले सर्वमेव च तत्कृतम् ॥१३-१५३-२३॥
yacceha kiñcitkartavyaṃ tatsarvaṃ prāpitaṃ mayā। yathoktaṃ bhavatā kāle sarvameva ca tatkṛtam ॥13-153-23॥

एवमुक्तस्तु गाङ्गेयः कुन्तीपुत्रेण धीमता। ददर्श भारतान्सर्वान्स्थितान्सम्परिवार्य तम् ॥१३-१५३-२४॥
evam-uktas tu gāṅgeyaḥ kuntī-putreṇa dhīmatā। dadarśa bhāratān sarvān sthitān samparivārya tam॥13-153-24॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - having been spoken (to); तु (tu) - but; गाङ्गेयः (gāṅgeyaḥ) - son of Gaṅgā; कुन्तीपुत्रेण (kuntī-putreṇa) - by the son of Kuntī; धीमता (dhīmatā) - wise; ददर्श (dadarśa) - he saw; भारतान् (bhāratān) - the descendants of Bharata; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; स्थितान् (sthitān) - standing; सम्परिवार्य (samparivārya) - having surrounded; तम् (tam) - him;]
(Thus, having been spoken (to), but the son of Gaṅgā by the wise son of Kuntī, he saw all the descendants of Bharata standing, having surrounded him.)
Thus, when the wise son of Kuntī spoke so, the son of Gaṅgā saw that all the Bhāratas had surrounded and were standing around him. (13-153-24)
ततश्चलवलिर्भीष्मः प्रगृह्य विपुलं भुजम्। ओघमेघस्वनो वाग्मी काले वचनमब्रवीत् ॥१३-१५३-२५॥
tataś calavalir bhīṣmaḥ pragṛhya vipulaṃ bhujam | ogha-megha-svano vāgmī kāle vacanam abravīt ॥13-153-25॥

दिष्ट्या प्राप्तोऽसि कौन्तेय सहामात्यो युधिष्ठिर। परिवृत्तो हि भगवान्सहस्रांशुर्दिवाकरः ॥१३-१५३-२६॥

(By fortune arrived are you, O son of Kuntī, with ministers, Yudhiṣṭhira. Indeed the illustrious thousand-rayed sun, the maker of day, has set.)
Fortunately, you have arrived here with your ministers, O Yudhiṣṭhira, son of Kuntī. For the illustrious sun, the thousand-rayed maker of day, has indeed set. (13-153-26)
अष्टपञ्चाशतं रात्र्यः शयानस्याद्य मे गताः। शरेषु निशिताग्रेषु यथा वर्षशतं तथा ॥१३-१५३-२७॥
aṣṭapañcāśataṃ rātryaḥ śayānasya adya me gatāḥ। śareṣu niśitāgreṣu yathā varṣaśataṃ tathā ॥13-153-27॥

(Fifty-eight nights of one lying down, today for me have passed. On the arrows with sharp points, just as a hundred years, so.)
Fifty-eight nights have now passed for me lying here; while resting on these sharp-pointed arrows, it has felt like a hundred years. (13-153-27)
माघोऽयं समनुप्राप्तो मासः पुण्यो युधिष्ठिर। त्रिभागशेषः पक्षोऽयं शुक्लो भवितुमर्हति ॥१३-१५३-२८॥
māgho'yaṃ samanuprāpto māsaḥ puṇyo yudhiṣṭhira। tribhāgaśeṣaḥ pakṣo'yaṃ śuklo bhavitumarhati ॥13-153-28॥

राजन्विदितधर्मोऽसि सुनिर्णीतार्थसंशयः। बहुश्रुता हि ते विप्रा बहवः पर्युपासिताः ॥१३-१५३-३०॥
rājan-vidita-dharmo'si su-nirṇīta-artha-saṁśayaḥ। bahuśrutā hi te viprā bahavaḥ paryupāsitāḥ॥13-153-30॥
[राजन् (rājan) - O king; विदितधर्मः (vidita-dharmaḥ) - one who knows dharma; असि (asi) - you are; सुनिर्णीतार्थसंशयः (su-nirṇīta-artha-saṁśayaḥ) - whose doubts about meaning are well resolved; बहुश्रुताः (bahuśrutāḥ) - learned (in much); हि (hi) - indeed; ते (te) - your; विप्राः (viprāḥ) - brahmins; बहवः (bahavaḥ) - many; पार्युपासिताः (paryupāsitāḥ) - have been served (by you);]
(O king, knower of dharma you are, whose doubts about the meanings are well resolved. Learned (in much), indeed, your many brahmins have been served (by you).)
O king, you are one who knows dharma and whose doubts regarding meanings are well resolved. Indeed, you have attended upon many learned brahmins. (13-153-30)
वेदशास्त्राणि सर्वाणि धर्मांश्च मनुजेश्वर। वेदांश्च चतुरः साङ्गान्निखिलेनावबुध्यसे ॥१३-१५३-३१॥
vedaśāstrāṇi sarvāṇi dharmāṁś ca manujeśvara। vedāṁś ca caturaḥ sāṅgān nikhilenāvabudhyase ॥13-153-31॥
[वेदशास्त्राणि (vedaśāstrāṇi) - all Vedic sciences; सर्वाणि (sarvāṇi) - all; धर्मान् (dharmān) - dharmas (righteous duties); च (ca) - and; मनुजेश्वर (manujeśvara) - O lord of men; वेदान् (vedān) - Vedas; च (ca) - and; चतुरः (caturaḥ) - four; साङ्गान् (sāṅgān) - with appendages; निखिलेन (nikhilena) - completely; अवबुध्यसे (avabudhyase) - you understand;]

O lord of men, you completely understand all the Vedic sciences, all the duties of righteousness, and the four Vedas along with their appendages. (13-153-31)
न शोचितव्यं कौरव्य भवितव्यं हि तत्तथा। श्रुतं देवरहस्यं ते कृष्णद्वैपायनादपि ॥१३-१५३-३२॥
na śocitavyaṃ kauravya bhavitavyaṃ hi tat tathā। śrutaṃ devarahasyaṃ te kṛṣṇadvaipāyanād api॥13-153-32॥

(Not should be grieved, O Kauravya; what is destined indeed that thus. Heard divine secret by you from Kṛṣṇa-dvaipāyana also.)

यथा पाण्डोः सुता राजंस्तथैव तव धर्मतः। तान्पालय स्थितो धर्मे गुरुशुश्रूषणे रतान् ॥१३-१५३-३३॥
yathā pāṇḍoḥ sutā rājan tathaiva tava dharmataḥ। tān pālaya sthito dharme guruśuśrūṣaṇe ratān ॥13-153-33॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; पाण्डोः (pāṇḍoḥ) - of Pāṇḍu; सुता (sutāḥ) - sons; राजन् (rājan) - O king; तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same manner; तव (tava) - your; धर्मतः (dharmataḥ) - according to dharma; तान् (tān) - them; पालय (pālaya) - protect; स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - established; धर्मे (dharme) - in dharma; गुरुशुश्रूषणे (guruśuśrūṣaṇe) - in service to elders; रतान् (ratān) - engaged;]
(Just as the sons of Pāṇḍu, O king, so likewise yours, according to dharma. Them protect, established in dharma, engaged in service to elders.)

धर्मराजो हि शुद्धात्मा निदेशे स्थास्यते तव। आनृशंस्यपरं ह्येनं जानामि गुरुवत्सलम् ॥१३-१५३-३४॥
dharmarājo hi śuddhātmā nideśe sthāsyate tava। ānṛśaṃsyaparaṃ hyenaṃ jānāmi guruvatsalam ॥13-153-34॥

(The lord of dharma indeed, pure-minded, at your command will stand. Supreme in compassion, indeed, this one I know as fond of elders.)

tava putrā durātmānaḥ krodhalobhaparāyaṇāḥ। īrṣyābhibhūtā durvṛttāstānnna śocitumarhasi ॥13-153-35॥
[तव (tava) - your; पुत्राः (putrāḥ) - sons; दुरात्मानः (durātmānaḥ) - wicked-souled; क्रोधलोभपरायणाः (krodhalobha-parāyaṇāḥ) - given over to anger and greed; ईर्ष्याभिभूताः (īrṣyā-abhibhūtāḥ) - overcome by envy; दुर्वृत्ताः (durvṛttāḥ) - of evil conduct; तान् (tān) - them; न (na) - not; शोचितुम् (śocitum) - to grieve; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought;]
(Your sons, wicked-souled, given over to anger and greed, overcome by envy, of evil conduct— them not to grieve you ought.)

(I have spoken formerly the wicked-minded, foolish Duryodhana. Where Kṛṣṇa is, from there is dharma; where dharma is, from there is victory. (13-153-39))
I once called Duryodhana wicked-minded and foolish. Wherever Kṛṣṇa is, there is righteousness; where righteousness is, there is victory. (13-153-39)
वासुदेवेन तीर्थेन पुत्र संशाम्य पाण्डवैः। सन्धानस्य परः कालस्तवेति च पुनः पुनः ॥१३-१५३-४०॥
vāsudevena tīrthena putra sanśāmya pāṇḍavaiḥ। sandhānasya paraḥ kālas taveti ca punaḥ punaḥ॥13-153-40॥
[वासुदेवेन (vāsudevena) - by Vāsudeva; तीर्थेन (tīrthena) - by the holy one (or by the mediator); पुत्र (putra) - O son; संशाम्य (sanśāmya) - having reconciled; पाण्डवैः (pāṇḍavaiḥ) - with the Pāṇḍavas; सन्धानस्य (sandhānasya) - of peace-making; परः (paraḥ) - a further; कालः (kālaḥ) - time; तव (tava) - for you; इति (iti) - thus; च (ca) - and; पुनः पुनः (punaḥ punaḥ) - again and again;]
(By Vāsudeva, by the holy one, O son, having reconciled with the Pāṇḍavas; of peace-making, a further time for you thus and again and again.)
O son, Vāsudeva, the holy one, repeatedly said to you to reconcile with the Pāṇḍavas; he said that you still have time to make peace. (13-153-40)
न च मे तद्वचो मूढः कृतवान्स सुमन्दधीः। घातयित्वेह पृथिवीं ततः स निधनं गतः ॥१३-१५३-४१॥
na ca me tadvaco mūḍhaḥ kṛtavān sa sumandadhīḥ. ghātayitva iha pṛthivīm tataḥ sa nidhanaṃ gataḥ ॥13-153-41॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; मे (me) - my; तद्वचः (tadvacaḥ) - that advice; मूढः (mūḍhaḥ) - the deluded one; कृतवान् (kṛtavān) - performed; स (sa) - he; सुमन्दधीः (sumandadhīḥ) - of very dull intellect; घातयित्वा (ghātayitvā) - having caused the destruction; इह (iha) - here; पृथिवीम् (pṛthivīm) - the earth; ततः (tataḥ) - after that; स (sa) - he; निधनं (nidhanaṃ) - destruction; गतः (gataḥ) - reached;]
(And not my that advice the deluded one performed, he of very dull intellect. Having caused here the destruction of the earth, after that he reached destruction.)
But that deluded one did not follow my advice; he, being of very dull intellect, after causing destruction upon this earth, then met his own end. (13-153-41)
त्वां च जानाम्यहं वीर पुराणमृषिसत्तमम्। नरेण सहितं देवं बदर्यां सुचिरोषितम् ॥१३-१५३-४२॥
tvāṃ ca jānāmy ahaṃ vīra purāṇam ṛṣisattamam। nareṇa sahitaṃ devaṃ badaryāṃ suciroṣitam ॥13-153-42॥
[त्वां (tvāṃ) - you (accusative singular); च (ca) - and; जानामि (jānāmi) - I know; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; वीर (vīra) - hero; पुराणम् (purāṇam) - ancient; ऋषिसत्तमम् (ṛṣisattamam) - best among sages; नरेण (nareṇa) - with the man; by the man; सहितम् (sahitam) - together with; accompanied by; देवम् (devaṃ) - deity; god; बदर्यां (badaryāṃ) - in Badarī; at Badarī; सुचिरोषितम् (suciroṣitam) - dwelt for a long time;]
(You also I know, O hero, ancient best among sages, with the man accompanied, the deity, in Badarī dwelt for a long time.)
O hero, I know you also—the ancient best among sages, the deity who, together with the man, stayed in Badarī for a long time. (13-153-42)
तथा मे नारदः प्राह व्यासश्च सुमहातपाः। नरनारायणावेतौ सम्भूतौ मनुजेष्विति ॥१३-१५३-४३॥
tathā me nāradaḥ prāha vyāsaś ca sumahātapāḥ। nara-nārāyaṇāv etau sambhūtau manujeṣv iti ॥13-153-43॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; मे (me) - to me; नारदः (nāradaḥ) - Nārada; प्राह (prāha) - said; व्यासश्च (vyāsaś ca) - and Vyāsa; सुमहातपाः (sumahātapāḥ) - of great austerity; नरनारायणावेतौ (nara-nārāyaṇau etau) - Nara and Nārāyaṇa, these two; सम्भूतौ (sambhūtau) - have arisen; मनुजेषु (manujeṣu) - among men; इति (iti) - thus;]
(Thus, to me Nārada said, and Vyāsa, of great austerity, Nara and Nārāyaṇa, these two, have arisen among men, thus.)
Thus Nārada said to me, and Vyāsa, who is of great austerity, (also) that these two, Nara and Nārāyaṇa, have appeared among men. (13-153-43)
वासुदेव उवाच॥

[वासुदेव (vāsudeva) - Vasudeva; (a proper noun, name of a person); उवाच (uvāca) - said; (from the root वच् vac, to speak, 3rd person singular, perfect);]
(Vasudeva said;)
Vasudeva said.
अनुजानामि भीष्म त्वां वसूनाप्नुहि पार्थिव। न तेऽस्ति वृजिनं किञ्चिन्मया दृष्टं महाद्युते ॥१३-१५३-४४॥
anujānāmi bhīṣma tvāṃ vasūn āpnuhi pārthiva। na te-'sti vṛjinaṃ kiñcin mayā dṛṣṭaṃ mahādyute ॥13-153-44॥
[अनुजानामि (anujānāmi) - I permit; भीष्म (bhīṣma) - Bhīṣma; त्वां (tvāṃ) - you; वसून् (vasūn) - Vasus; आप्नुहि (āpnuhi) - attain; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - O king; न (na) - not; ते (te) - for you; अस्ति (asti) - there is; वृजिनं (vṛjinaṃ) - sin; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - any; मया (mayā) - by me; दृष्टं (dṛṣṭaṃ) - seen; महाद्युते (mahādyute) - O greatly radiant one;]
(I permit, Bhīṣma, you the Vasus attain, O king. Not for you there is sin any by me seen, O greatly radiant one.)
I grant permission, Bhīṣma, attain the Vasus, O king. I have seen no sin in you at all, O greatly radiant one. (13-153-44)
पितृभक्तोऽसि राजर्षे मार्कण्डेय इवापरः। तेन मृत्युस्तव वशे स्थितो भृत्य इवानतः ॥१३-१५३-४५॥
pitṛbhakto'si rājarṣe mārkaṇḍeya ivāparaḥ। tena mṛtyus tava vaśe sthito bhṛtya ivānataḥ॥13-153-45॥
[पितृभक्तः (pitṛbhaktaḥ) - devoted-to-father; असि (asi) - you are; राजर्षे (rājarṣe) - O royal sage; मार्कण्डेयः (mārkaṇḍeyaḥ) - Markandeya; इव (iva) - like; अपरः (aparaḥ) - another; तेन (tena) - by that (because of that); मृत्युः (mṛtyuḥ) - death; तव (tava) - your; वशे (vaśe) - in control; स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - remains; भृत्यः (bhṛtyaḥ) - servant; इव (iva) - like; अनतः (anataḥ) - submissive;]
(Devoted-to-father you are, O royal sage, another like Markandeya. By that, death remains in your control, like a servant, submissive.)
You are devoted to your father, O royal sage, another like Markandeya. Therefore, death remains in your control, just like a submissive servant. (13-153-45)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥
vaiśampāyana uvāca॥
[वैशम्पायन (vaiśampāyana) - Vaiśampāyana; (the name of the sage/narrator); उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
(Vaiśampāyana said;)
Vaiśampāyana said.
एवमुक्तस्तु गाङ्गेयः पाण्डवानिदमब्रवीत्। धृतराष्ट्रमुखांश्चापि सर्वान्ससुहृदस्तथा ॥१३-१५३-४६॥
evam-uktas tu gāṅgeyaḥ pāṇḍavān idam abravīt. dhṛtarāṣṭra-mukhāṁś ca api sarvān sa-suhṛdas tathā ॥13-153-46॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - having been spoken to; तु (tu) - but; गाङ्गेयः (gāṅgeyaḥ) - son of Ganga; पाण्डवान् (pāṇḍavān) - to the Pandavas; इदम् (idam) - this; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; धृतराष्ट्रमुखान् (dhṛtarāṣṭra-mukhān) - headed by Dhritarashtra; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; ससुहृदः (sa-suhṛdaḥ) - with friends; तथा (tathā) - in like manner;]
(Thus having been spoken to, but the son of Ganga said this to the Pandavas. And also (to) all headed by Dhritarashtra, with (their) friends likewise.)
Thus addressed, the son of Ganga spoke these words to the Pandavas, and also to all those headed by Dhritarashtra, together with their friends, likewise. (13-153-46)
प्राणानुत्स्रष्टुमिच्छामि तन्मानुज्ञातुमर्हथ। सत्ये प्रयतितव्यं वः सत्यं हि परमं बलम् ॥१३-१५३-४७॥
prāṇān utsraṣṭum icchāmi tan mānujñātum arhatha। satye prayatitavyaṃ vaḥ satyaṃ hi paramaṃ balam ॥13-153-47॥
[प्राणान् (prāṇān) - lives; उत्स्रष्टुम् (utsraṣṭum) - to give up; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I wish; तन् (tan) - therefore; मानुज्ञातुम् (mānujñātum) - to permit me; अर्हथ (arhatha) - you ought; सत्ये (satye) - in truth; प्रयतितव्यं (priyatitavyaṃ) - effort should be made; वः (vaḥ) - by you; सत्यं (satyaṃ) - truth; हि (hi) - indeed; परमं (paramaṃ) - supreme; बलम् (balam) - strength;]
(I wish to give up my lives; therefore, you ought to permit me. In truth, effort should be made by you; truth indeed is supreme strength.)
I wish to give up my life, so you ought to permit me. You should strive for truth, for truth is truly the supreme strength. (13-153-47)
आनृशंस्यपरैर्भाव्यं सदैव नियतात्मभिः। ब्रह्मण्यैर्धर्मशीलैश्च तपोनीत्यैश्च भारत ॥१३-१५३-४८॥
ānṛśaṁsyaparairbhāvyaṁ sadaiva niyatātmabhiḥ। brahmaṇyairdharmaśīlaiśca taponītyaiśca bhārata॥13-153-48॥
[आनृशंस्यपरैः (ānṛśaṁsya-paraiḥ) - by those excelling in compassion; भाव्यं (bhāvyaṁ) - should be conducted; सदैव (sadaiva) - always; नियतात्मभिः (niyatātmabhiḥ) - by those with restrained self; ब्रह्मण्यैः (brahmaṇyaiḥ) - by those devoted to the Veda; धर्मशीलैः (dharmaśīlaiḥ) - by those possessed of righteousness; च (ca) - and; तपोनीत्यैः (tapo-nītyaiḥ) - by those firm in austerity; च (ca) - and; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(By those excelling in compassion should be conducted always, by those with restrained self, by those devoted to the Veda, by those possessed of righteousness and by those firm in austerity, and O Bhārata.)
O Bhārata, one should always act with compassion, self-restraint, devotion to the Veda, righteousness, and steadfastness in austerity. (13-153-48)
इत्युक्त्वा सुहृदः सर्वान्सम्परिष्वज्य चैव ह। पुनरेवाब्रवीद्धीमान्युधिष्ठिरमिदं वचः ॥१३-१५३-४९॥
ity uktvā suhṛdaḥ sarvān sampariṣvajya caiva ha। punar evābravīd dhīmān yudhiṣṭhiram idaṃ vacaḥ॥13-153-49॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; सुहृदः (suhṛdaḥ) - friends; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; सम्परिष्वज्य (sampariṣvajya) - having embraced; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; ह (ha) - surely; पुनः (punar) - again; एव (eva) - indeed; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - he said; धीमान् (dhīmān) - the wise; युधिष्ठिरम् (yudhiṣṭhiram) - Yudhishthira; इदं (idaṃ) - this; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech;]
(Thus having spoken, having embraced all the friends, and indeed, surely, again indeed, the wise (one) said to Yudhishthira this speech.)
Having thus spoken and embraced all his friends, the wise one again said these words to Yudhishthira. (13-153-49)
ब्राह्मणाश्चैव ते नित्यं प्राज्ञाश्चैव विशेषतः। आचार्या ऋत्विजश्चैव पूजनीया नराधिप ॥१३-१५३-५०॥
brāhmaṇāścaiva te nityaṃ prājñāścaiva viśeṣataḥ। ācāryā ṛtvijaścaiva pūjanīyā narādhipa ॥13-153-50॥
[ब्राह्मणाः (brāhmaṇāḥ) (brāhmaṇāḥ) - the Brāhmaṇas; च (ca) (ca) - and; एव (eva) (eva) - indeed; ते (te) (te) - by you; नित्यं (nityaṃ) (nityaṃ) - always; प्राज्ञाः (prājñāḥ) (prājñāḥ) - the wise; च (ca) (ca) - and; एव (eva) (eva) - indeed; विशेषतः (viśeṣataḥ) (viśeṣataḥ) - especially; आचार्याः (ācāryāḥ) (ācāryāḥ) - teachers; ऋत्विजः (ṛtvijaḥ) (ṛtvijaḥ) - sacrificial priests; च (ca) (ca) - and; एव (eva) (eva) - indeed; पूजनीयाः (pūjanīyāḥ) (pūjanīyāḥ) - to be honored; नराधिप (narādhipa) (narādhipa) - O lord of men;]
(Brāhmaṇas and indeed by you always, the wise and indeed especially, teachers, sacrificial priests and indeed are to be honored, O lord of men.)
O lord of men, the Brāhmaṇas, and especially the wise among them, as well as teachers and sacrificial priests, are always to be honored by you. (13-153-50)
