kṛtodakaṁ tu rājānaṁ dhṛtarāṣṭraṁ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। puraskṛtya mahābāhur uttatārākulendriyaḥ ॥14-1-1॥

After performing the water-offering, Yudhishthira, the mighty-armed, with agitated senses, led King Dhritarashtra in front and emerged. (14-1-1)
उत्तीर्य च महीपालो बाष्पव्याकुललोचनः। पपात तीरे गङ्गाया व्याधविद्ध इव द्विपः ॥१४-१-२॥
uttīrya ca mahīpālo bāṣpavyākulalocanaḥ। papāta tīre gaṅgāyā vyādhaviddha iva dvipaḥ ॥14-1-2॥

तं सीदमानं जग्राह भीमः कृष्णेन चोदितः। मैवमित्यब्रवीच्चैनं कृष्णः परबलार्दनः ॥१४-१-३॥
taṃ sīdamānaṃ jagrāha bhīmaḥ kṛṣṇena coditaḥ। maivam ity abravīc cainaṃ kṛṣṇaḥ parabalārdanaḥ॥14-1-3॥

(Him sinking, Bhīma seized, urged by Kṛṣṇa. 'Not thus'—thus said and to him, Kṛṣṇa, destroyer of enemy forces.)
As he was sinking, Bhīma seized him, being urged by Kṛṣṇa. "Do not act thus," Kṛṣṇa, the destroyer of enemy forces, said to him. (14-1-3)
तमार्तं पतितं भूमौ निश्वसन्तं पुनः पुनः। ददृशुः पाण्डवा राजन्धर्मात्मानं युधिष्ठिरम् ॥१४-१-४॥
tam ārtaṁ patitaṁ bhūmau niśvasantaṁ punaḥ punaḥ। dadṛśuḥ pāṇḍavā rājandharmātmānaṁ yudhiṣṭhiram ॥14-1-4॥
[तम् (tam) - him; आर्तम् (ārtaṁ) - afflicted; पतितम् (patitaṁ) - fallen; भूमौ (bhūmau) - on the ground; निश्वसन्तम् (niśvasantam) - sighing; पुनः पुनः (punaḥ punaḥ) - again and again; ददृशुः (dadṛśuḥ) - they saw; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; राजन् (rājan) - O King; धर्मात्मानम् (dharmātmānam) - the righteous-souled; युधिष्ठिरम् (yudhiṣṭhiram) - Yudhiṣṭhira;]
(Him afflicted, fallen on the ground, sighing again and again, they saw, the Pāṇḍavas, O King, the righteous-souled Yudhiṣṭhira.)
O King, the Pāṇḍavas saw Yudhiṣṭhira, righteous-souled, afflicted, fallen on the ground, sighing again and again. (14-1-4)
तं दृष्ट्वा दीनमनसं गतसत्त्वं जनेश्वरम्। भूयः शोकसमाविष्टाः पाण्डवाः समुपाविशन् ॥१४-१-५॥
taṃ dṛṣṭvā dīnamanasaṃ gatasattvaṃ janeśvaram। bhūyaḥ śokasamāviṣṭāḥ pāṇḍavāḥ samupāviśan ॥14-1-5॥

(Having seen him, the lord of men, with dejected mind and whose vigour had departed, again the Pāṇḍavas, overcome by grief, sat down together.)
When they saw him—the lord of men with a dejected mind, bereft of vigour—the Pāṇḍavas, once more overcome by grief, all sat down together. (14-1-5)
राजा च धृतराष्ट्रस्तमुपासीनो महाभुजः। वाक्यमाह महाप्राज्ञो महाशोकप्रपीडितम् ॥१४-१-६॥
rājā ca dhṛtarāṣṭras tam upāsīno mahābhujaḥ। vākyam āha mahāprājño mahāśokaprapīḍitam ॥14-1-6॥

(The king and Dhritarashtra, seated near to him, having great arms, very wise, said speech to the one oppressed by great sorrow.)
The king Dhritarashtra, who was sitting near him, mighty-armed and very wise, spoke to the one greatly afflicted by sorrow. (14-1-6)
उत्तिष्ठ कुरुशार्दूल कुरु कार्यमनन्तरम्। क्षत्रधर्मेण कौरव्य जितेयमवनिस्त्वया ॥१४-१-७॥
uttiṣṭha kuruśārdūla kuru kāryamanantaram। kṣatradharmeṇa kauravya jiteyam avanistvayā ॥14-1-7॥

(Arise, tiger among Kurus, perform duty immediately; by the duty of a warrior, O descendant of Kuru, this earth is conquered by you.)
Rise up, O tiger among the Kurus! Do your duty at once. By following the warrior’s code, O Kauravya, you shall conquer this earth. (14-1-7)
तां भुङ्क्ष्व भ्रातृभिः सार्धं सुहृद्भिश्च जनेश्वर। न शोचितव्यं पश्यामि त्वया धर्मभृतां वर ॥१४-१-८॥
tāṃ bhuṅkṣva bhrātṛbhiḥ sārdhaṃ suhṛdbhiś ca janeśvara। na śocitavyaṃ paśyāmi tvayā dharmabhṛtāṃ vara ॥14-1-8॥
[तां (tāṃ) - that (kingdom or object); भुङ्क्ष्व (bhuṅkṣva) - enjoy; भ्रातृभिः (bhrātṛbhiḥ) - with brothers; सार्धं (sārdhaṃ) - together; (with) सुहृद्भिः (suhṛdbhiḥ) - with friends; च (ca) - and; जनेश्वर (janeśvara) - O lord of people; न (na) - not; शोचितव्यम् (śocitavyam) - should be grieved; पश्यामि (paśyāmi) - I see; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; धर्मभृताम् (dharmabhṛtām) - of the upholders of dharma; वर (vara) - best; ॥१४-१-८॥ (॥14-1-8॥) - ;]
(That enjoy with brothers together with friends and O lord of people; not should be grieved I see by you, best of upholders of dharma.)
O lord of the people, enjoy that (kingdom) together with your brothers and friends; I do not see any reason for you to grieve, best among the upholders of dharma. (14-1-8)
शोचितव्यं मया चैव गान्धार्या च विशां पते। पुत्रैर्विहीनो राज्येन स्वप्नलब्धधनो यथा ॥१४-१-९॥
śocitavyaṃ mayā caiva gāndhāryā ca viśāṃ pate। putrair-vihīno rājyena svapnalabdhadhano yathā ॥14-1-9॥
[शोचितव्यं (śocitavyam) - to be lamented; मया (mayā) - by me; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; गान्धार्या (gāndhāryā) - by Gāndhārī; च (ca) - and; विशां (viśām) - of men; पते (pate) - O lord; पुत्रैः (putraiḥ) - by sons; विहीनः (vihīnaḥ) - deprived; राज्येन (rājyena) - by kingdom; स्वप्नलब्धधनः (svapnalabdhadhanaḥ) - one who has obtained wealth in a dream; यथा (yathā) - as;]
(To be lamented by me and indeed by Gāndhārī also, O lord of men; deprived of sons, by kingdom, as one who has obtained wealth in a dream.)
O lord of men, to be lamented by me and by Gāndhārī as well, deprived of sons and kingdom, like a man who has gained wealth in a dream. (14-1-9)
अश्रुत्वा हितकामस्य विदुरस्य महात्मनः। वाक्यानि सुमहार्थानि परितप्यामि दुर्मतिः ॥१४-१-१०॥
aśrutvā hitakāmasya vidurasya mahātmanaḥ। vākyāni sumahārthāni paritapyāmi durmatiḥ॥14-1-10॥
[अश्रुत्वा (aśrutvā) - not having heard; हितकामस्य (hitakāmasya) - well-wishing; desiring benefit; विदुरस्य (vidurasya) - of Vidura; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - great-souled; high-minded; वाक्यानि (vākyāni) - words; सुमहार्थानि (sumahārthāni) - of very great import; परितप्यामि (paritapyāmi) - I am tormented; I suffer; दुर्मतिः (durmatiḥ) - having wicked mind; foolish;]
(Not having heard the words of Vidura, the great-souled and well-wishing one, of very great import, I, the wicked-minded, am tormented.)
Because I, being foolish, did not listen to the most important words of Vidura, the high-minded well-wisher, I am now tormented. (14-1-10)
उक्तवानेष मां पूर्वं धर्मात्मा दिव्यदर्शनः। दुर्योधनापराधेन कुलं ते विनशिष्यति ॥१४-१-११॥
uktavān eṣa māṃ pūrvaṃ dharmātmā divya-darśanaḥ। duryodhanāparādhen kulaṃ te vinaśiṣyati ॥14-1-11॥
[उक्तवान् (uktavān) - spoken; said; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this (one); माम् (mām) - to me; पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - before; धर्मात्मा (dharmātmā) - righteous; whose nature is dharma; दिव्यदर्शनः (divya-darśanaḥ) - divine visioned; having a divine appearance; दुर्योधनापराधेन (duryodhanāparādhena) - by the offence (aparādha) of Duryodhana; कुलम् (kulam) - family; lineage; ते (te) - your; विनशिष्यति (vinaśiṣyati) - will perish; will be destroyed;]
(This one (of) divine vision, righteous, formerly said to me: By the offence of Duryodhana, your family will perish.)
This righteous one, possessed of divine vision, formerly said to me: 'By Duryodhana's offence, your family will be destroyed.' (14-1-11)
स्वस्ति चेदिच्छसे राजन्कुलस्यात्मन एव च। वध्यतामेष दुष्टात्मा मन्दो राजा सुयोधनः ॥१४-१-१२॥
svasti ced icchase rājan kulasya ātmana eva ca। vadhyatām eṣa duṣṭātmā mando rājā suyodhanaḥ ॥14-1-12॥
[स्वस्ति (svasti) (svasti) - welfare; चेत् (cet) (cet) - if; इच्छसे (icchase) (icchase) - you desire; राजन् (rājan) (rājan) - O king; कुलस्य (kulasya) (kulasya) - of the lineage; आत्मन (ātmana) (ātmana) - of yourself; एव (eva) (eva) - indeed; च (ca) (ca) - and; वध्यताम् (vadhyatām) (vadhyatām) - let be slain; एष (eṣa) (eṣa) - this; दुष्टात्मा (duṣṭātmā) (duṣṭātmā) - wicked-minded; मन्दः (mandaḥ) (mandaḥ) - foolish; राजा (rājā) (rājā) - king; सुयोधनः (suyodhanaḥ) (suyodhanaḥ) - Suyodhana;]
(If you desire welfare, O king, of the lineage and indeed of yourself, let this wicked-minded, foolish king Suyodhana be slain.)
O king, if you seek the welfare of your family and yourself, let this wicked and foolish king Suyodhana be put to death. (14-1-12)
कर्णश्च शकुनिश्चैव मैनं पश्यतु कर्हिचित्। द्यूतसम्पातमप्येषामप्रमत्तो निवारय ॥१४-१-१३॥
karṇaś ca śakuniś caiva mainaṃ paśyatu karhicit. dyūtasampātam apy eṣām apramatto nivāraya ॥14-1-13॥
[कर्णः (karṇaḥ) - Karṇa; (proper noun; name of a warrior); च (ca) - and; शकुनिः (śakuniḥ) - Śakuni; (proper noun; name of a person); च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; मा (mā) - not; एषम् (enam) - him; पश्यतु (paśyatu) - may see; कर्हिचित् (karhicit) - at any time; द्यूतसम्पातम् (dyūtasampātam) - game of dice event; अपि (api) - even; एषाम् (eṣām) - of these; अप्रमत्तः (apramattaḥ) - not careless; निवारय (nivāraya) - prevent; ॥१४-१-१३॥ (॥14-1-13॥) - ;]
(Karṇa and Śakuni indeed, may not him see at any time. The game of dice event even of these, not careless, prevent.)
Let neither Karṇa nor Śakuni ever see him at any time. Also, carefully prevent these from the event of the dice game. (14-1-13)
अभिषेचय राजानं धर्मात्मानं युधिष्ठिरम्। स पालयिष्यति वशी धर्मेण पृथिवीमिमाम् ॥१४-१-१४॥
abhiṣecaya rājānaṃ dharmātmānaṃ yudhiṣṭhiram। sa pālayiṣyati vaśī dharmeṇa pṛthivīm imām ॥14-1-14॥
[अभिषेचय (abhiṣecaya) - anoint; (you) install; राजानं (rājānam) - king; (accusative singular); धर्मात्मानं (dharmātmānam) - righteous-souled; virtuous-natured; (accusative singular); युधिष्ठिरम् (yudhiṣṭhiram) - Yudhishthira; (proper noun; accusative singular); स (sa) - he; पालयिष्यति (pālayiṣyati) - (he) will protect; will govern; वशी (vaśī) - one with self-control; master of himself; धर्मेण (dharmeṇa) - with righteousness; by means of dharma; पृथिवीम् (pṛthivīm) - the earth; (accusative singular); इमाम् (imām) - this; (accusative singular);]
(Anoint the king, the righteous-souled Yudhishthira. He will protect, being self-controlled, by righteousness, this earth.)
Anoint Yudhishthira, the virtuous king. He, being self-controlled, will rule this earth with righteousness. (14-1-14)
अथ नेच्छसि राजानं कुन्तीपुत्रं युधिष्ठिरम्। मेढीभूतः स्वयं राज्यं प्रतिगृह्णीष्व पार्थिव ॥१४-१-१५॥
atha necchasi rājānaṃ kuntīputraṃ yudhiṣṭhiram। meḍhībhūtaḥ svayaṃ rājyaṃ pratigṛhṇīṣva pārthiva ॥14-1-15॥
[अथ (atha) - then; न (na) - not; इच्छसि (icchasi) - you wish; राजानम् (rājānam) - king (accusative); कुन्तीपुत्रम् (kuntīputram) - son of Kuntī; युधिष्ठिरम् (yudhiṣṭhiram) - Yudhiṣṭhira (accusative); मेढीभूतः (meḍhībhūtaḥ) - installed on the throne; स्वयम् (svayam) - yourself; राज्यम् (rājyam) - kingdom; प्रतिगृह्णीष्व (pratigṛhṇīṣva) - accept; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - O king;]
(Then, if you do not wish the son of Kuntī, Yudhiṣṭhira, as king, being installed on the throne, yourself accept the kingdom, O king.)
Then, O king, if you do not wish for Yudhiṣṭhira, the son of Kuntī, to be king, being installed on the throne, you yourself accept the kingdom. (14-1-15)
समं सर्वेषु भूतेषु वर्तमानं नराधिप। अनुजीवन्तु सर्वे त्वां ज्ञातयो ज्ञातिवर्धन ॥१४-१-१६॥
samaṃ sarveṣu bhūteṣu vartamānaṃ narādhipa। anujīvantu sarve tvāṃ jñātayo jñātivardhana ॥14-1-16॥
[समं (samaṃ) - equally; सर्वेषु (sarveṣu) - in all; भूतेषु (bhūteṣu) - beings; वर्तमानं (vartamānam) - dwelling; नराधिप (narādhipa) - O king; अनुजीवन्तु (anujīvantu) - may they live after; सर्वे (sarve) - all; त्वां (tvām) - you; ज्ञातयः (jñātayaḥ) - kinsmen; ज्ञातिवर्धन (jñātivardhana) - O augmenter of kinsmen;]
(O king, dwelling equally among all beings, may all your kinsmen, O augmenter of kinsmen, live after you.)
O king, who abides impartially among all beings, may all your kinsmen, O increaser of your family, outlive you. (14-1-16)
एवं ब्रुवति कौन्तेय विदुरे दीर्घदर्शिनि। दुर्योधनमहं पापमन्ववर्तं वृथामतिः ॥१४-१-१७॥
evaṁ bruvati kaunteya vidure dīrghadarśini. duryodhanam ahaṁ pāpam anvavartaṁ vṛthāmatiḥ ॥14-1-17॥
[एवं (evaṁ) - thus; ब्रुवति (bruvati) - speaking; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - O son of Kunti; विदुरे (vidure) - to Vidura; दीर्घदर्शिनि (dīrghadarśini) - far-seeing; दुर्योधनम् (duryodhanam) - Duryodhana; अहम् (aham) - I; पापम् (pāpam) - evil; अन्ववर्तम् (anvavartaṁ) - followed; वृथामतिः (vṛthāmatiḥ) - having fruitless resolve;]
(Thus, while (he was) speaking, O son of Kunti, to Vidura, the far-seeing, I, with fruitless resolve, followed evil Duryodhana.)
Thus, as he spoke to Vidura, the far-seeing one, O son of Kunti, I, whose resolve was futile, followed the wicked Duryodhana. (14-1-17)
अश्रुत्वा ह्यस्य वीरस्य वाक्यानि मधुराण्यहम्। फलं प्राप्य महद्दुःखं निमग्नः शोकसागरे ॥१४-१-१८॥
aśrutvā hy asya vīrasya vākyāni madhurāṇy aham। phalaṃ prāpya mahadduḥkhaṃ nimagnaḥ śokasāgare॥14-1-18॥
[अश्रुत्वा (aśrutvā) - without hearing; हि (hi) - indeed; अस्य (asya) - of him; वीरस्य (vīrasya) - of the hero; वाक्यानि (vākyāni) - words; मधुराणि (madhurāṇi) - sweet; अहम् (aham) - I; फलं (phalam) - fruit; प्राप्य (prāpya) - obtaining; महत्-दुःखं (mahad-duḥkhaṃ) - great suffering; निमग्नः (nimagnaḥ) - immersed; शोकसागरे (śokasāgare) - in the ocean of sorrow;]
(Without hearing indeed his, the hero's, sweet words, I, obtaining the fruit, immersed in great suffering, in the ocean of sorrow.)
Indeed, without having heard this hero's sweet words, having obtained the result, I am immersed in great suffering, in the ocean of sorrow. (14-1-18)
वृद्धौ हि ते स्वः पितरौ पश्यावां दुःखितौ नृप। न शोचितव्यं भवता पश्यामीह जनाधिप ॥१४-१-१९॥
vṛddhau hi te svaḥ pitarau paśyāvāṃ duḥkhitau nṛpa। na śocitavyaṃ bhavatā paśyāmīha janādhipa ॥14-1-19॥

Indeed, O king, I see your own aged parents here, afflicted. You should not grieve, O lord of the people. (14-1-19)
