atrāpy udāharantīmam itihāsaṃ purātanam। bṛhaspateś ca saṃvādaṃ maruttasya ca bhārata॥14-6-1॥

Here too, O Bhārata, an ancient history is mentioned—the conversation between Bṛhaspati and Marutta. (14-6-1)
देवराजस्य समयं कृतमाङ्गिरसेन ह। श्रुत्वा मरुत्तो नृपतिर्मन्युमाहारयत्तदा ॥१४-६-२॥
devarājasya samayaṃ kṛtamāṅgirase na ha। śrutvā marutto nṛpatir manyum āhārayat tadā॥14-6-2॥

When Marutta, the king, heard that the agreement of the king of gods was made by Āṅgirasa, he became angry at that time. (14-6-2)
सङ्कल्प्य मनसा यज्ञं करन्धमसुतात्मजः। बृहस्पतिमुपागम्य वाग्मी वचनमब्रवीत् ॥१४-६-३॥
saṅkalpya manasā yajñaṃ karandhamasutātmajaḥ। bṛhaspatim upāgamya vāgmī vacanam abravīt ॥14-6-3॥

(Having resolved upon the sacrifice with the mind, the son of Karandhama's son, having approached Bṛhaspati, the eloquent one, spoke the speech.)
Having mentally resolved upon the sacrifice, the grandson of Karandhama approached Bṛhaspati and the eloquent one spoke these words. (14-6-3)
भगवन्यन्मया पूर्वमभिगम्य तपोधन। कृतोऽभिसन्धिर्यज्ञाय भवतो वचनाद्गुरो ॥१४-६-४॥
bhagavan yan mayā pūrvam abhigamya tapodhana। kṛto'bhisandhir yajñāya bhavato vacanād guro ॥14-6-4॥
[भगवन् (bhagavan) - O Lord; यत् (yat) - which; मया (mayā) - by me; पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - previously; अभिगम्य (abhigamya) - having approached; तपोधन (tapodhana) - O possessor of austerity (O ascetic); कृतः (kṛtaḥ) - made; अभिसन्धिः (abhisandhiḥ) - intention; यज्ञाय (yajñāya) - for the sacrifice; भवतः (bhavataḥ) - of you; वचनात् (vacanāt) - by the word; गुरो (guro) - O teacher;]
(O Lord, which by me previously having approached, O possessor of austerity, the intention for the sacrifice was made by the word of you, O teacher.)
O Lord, having previously approached you, O ascetic, I made the resolve for the sacrifice at your word, O teacher. (14-6-4)
तमहं यष्टुमिच्छामि सम्भाराः सम्भृताश्च मे। याज्योऽस्मि भवतः साधो तत्प्राप्नुहि विधत्स्व च ॥१४-६-५॥
tam ahaṃ yaṣṭum icchāmi sambhārāḥ sambhṛtāś ca me। yājyo'smi bhavataḥ sādho tat prāpnuhu vidhatsva ca ॥14-6-5॥
[तम् (tam) - him; अहम् (aham) - I; यष्टुम् (yaṣṭum) - to sacrifice (to him); इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I desire; सम्भाराः (sambhārāḥ) - the requisites (for sacrifice); सम्भृताः (sambhṛtāḥ) - have been collected; च (ca) - and; मे (me) - by me; याज्यः (yājyaḥ) - fit to be sacrificed; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; भवतः (bhavataḥ) - for you; साधो (sādho) - O noble one; तत् (tat) - that; प्राप्नुहि (prāpnuhu) - obtain; विधत्स्व (vidhatsva) - and perform; च (ca) - and;]
(Him I, to sacrifice, desire; the requisites have been collected by me; fit to be sacrificed am I for you, O noble one; that obtain, and perform also.)
I desire to sacrifice him; I have collected the necessary requisites; I am fit to be sacrificed for you, O noble one; therefore, obtain him and perform (the rite). (14-6-5)
बृहस्पतिरुवाच॥
bṛhaspatiruvāca॥

न कामये याजयितुं त्वामहं पृथिवीपते। वृतोऽस्मि देवराजेन प्रतिज्ञातं च तस्य मे ॥१४-६-६॥
na kāmaye yājayituṃ tvām ahaṃ pṛthivīpate। vṛto'smi devarājena pratijñātaṃ ca tasya me ॥14-6-6॥
[न (na) - not; कामये (kāmaye) - desire; याजयितुं (yājayitum) - to cause (someone) to perform sacrifice; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; अहम् (aham) - I; पृथिवीपते (pṛthivīpate) - O lord of the earth; वृतः (vṛtaḥ) - chosen; अस्मि (asmi) - am; देवराजेन (devarājena) - by the king of the gods; प्रतिज्ञातं (pratijñātam) - promised; च (ca) - and; तस्य (tasya) - by him; मे (me) - to me;]
(Not do I desire to cause you to perform a sacrifice, O lord of the earth; I am chosen by the king of the gods and it has been promised by him to me.)
O king, I do not wish to have you perform a sacrifice; I have been chosen by the king of the gods, and this has been promised to me by him. (14-6-6)
मरुत्त उवाच॥

Marutta said;
पित्र्यमस्मि तव क्षेत्रं बहु मन्ये च ते भृशम्। न चास्म्ययाज्यतां प्राप्तो भजमानं भजस्व माम् ॥१४-६-७॥
pitryam asmi tava kṣetraṃ bahu manye ca te bhṛśam। na cāsmy ayājyatāṃ prāpto bhajamānaṃ bhajasva mām ॥14-6-7॥
[पित्र्यम् (pitryam) - ancestral; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; तव (tava) - your; क्षेत्रम् (kṣetram) - field; बहु (bahu) - much; मन्ये (manye) - I regard; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - to you; भृशम् (bhṛśam) - exceedingly; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; अयाज्यताम् (ayājyatām) - state of being unfit for sacrifice; प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - having attained; भजमानम् (bhajamānam) - serving; भजस्व (bhajasva) - accept; माम् (mām) - me;]
(I am an ancestral field of yours, I regard (it) much and exceedingly for you. And I have not attained the state of being unfit for sacrifice. Accept me, who am serving.)
I am an ancestral field of yours; I hold it in high regard and cherish it greatly for you. Nor have I become unfit for sacrifice. Accept me, who am devoted to you. (14-6-7)
बृहस्पतिरुवाच॥
bṛhaspatiruvāca॥

Bṛhaspati said.
अमर्त्यं याजयित्वाहं याजयिष्ये न मानुषम्। मरुत्त गच्छ वा मा वा निवृत्तोऽस्म्यद्य याजनात् ॥१४-६-८॥
amartyaṃ yājayitvāhaṃ yājayiṣye na mānuṣam। marutta gaccha vā mā vā nivṛtto'smyadya yājanāt ॥14-6-8॥
[अमर्त्यं (amartyaṃ) - the immortal one (a god); याजयित्वा (yājayitvā) - having caused to perform sacrifice; having made (someone) perform a sacrifice; अहम् (aham) - I; याजयिष्ये (yājayiṣye) - will cause to perform sacrifice; न (na) - not; मानुषम् (mānuṣam) - a human (being); मरुत्त (marutta) - O Marutta; गच्छ (gaccha) - go; वा (vā) - or; मा (mā) - do not; वा (vā) - or; निवृत्तः (nivṛttaḥ) - I am ceased; I have withdrawn; अस्मि (asmi) - am; अद्य (adya) - today; याजनात् (yājanāt) - from the act of causing a (sacrificial) rite;]
(Having caused the immortal one to perform sacrifice, I will not cause a human to perform sacrifice. O Marutta, go or do not (go), I am withdrawn today from the act of sacrifice.)
Having performed the sacrifice for the immortal one, I will not perform it for any human. O Marutta, go if you wish or do not, for today I have ceased conducting sacrifices. (14-6-8)
न त्वां याजयितास्म्यद्य वृणु त्वं यमिहेच्छसि। उपाध्यायं महाबाहो यस्ते यज्ञं करिष्यति ॥१४-६-९॥
na tvāṁ yājayitāsmyadya vṛṇu tvaṁ yamihecchasi। upādhyāyaṁ mahābāho yaste yajñaṁ kariṣyati॥14-6-9॥
[न (na) - not; त्वाम् (tvām) - you (accusative singular); याजयिता (yājayitā) - will cause to be performed (the sacrifice); अस्म्यद्य (asmi adya) - I am today; वृणु (vṛṇu) - choose; त्वम् (tvam) - you; यम् (yam) - whom; इह (iha) - here; इच्छसि (icchasi) - you desire; उपाध्यायम् (upādhyāyam) - officiating priest; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed; यः (yaḥ) - who; ते (te) - for you; यज्ञम् (yajñam) - sacrifice; करिष्यति (kariṣyati) - will perform;]
(Not you will I cause to perform (the sacrifice) today; choose you whom here you desire; the officiating priest, O mighty-armed, who for you the sacrifice will perform.)
I will not be the one to cause you to perform the sacrifice today; choose, O mighty-armed one, whichever officiating priest here you desire—whoever will perform the sacrifice for you. (14-6-9)

एवमुक्तस्तु नृपतिर्मरुत्तो व्रीडितोऽभवत्। प्रत्यागच्छच्च संविग्नो ददर्श पथि नारदम् ॥१४-६-१०॥
evam-uktas tu nṛpatir marutto vrīḍito'bhavat। pratyāgacchac ca saṃvigno dadarśa pathi nāradam॥14-6-10॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - addressed; तु (tu) - but; नृपतिः (nṛpatiḥ) - king; मरुत्तः (maruttaḥ) - Marutta; व्रीडितः (vrīḍitaḥ) - ashamed; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; प्रत्यागच्छत् (pratyāgacchat) - returned; च (ca) - and; संविग्नः (saṃvignaḥ) - anxious; ददर्श (dadarśa) - he saw; पथि (pathi) - on the road; नारदम् (nāradam) - Nārada;]
(Thus addressed but the king Marutta became ashamed. He returned and anxious, saw Nārada on the road.)
When thus addressed, King Marutta became ashamed. Anxious, he turned back and saw Nārada on the road. (14-6-10)
देवर्षिणा समागम्य नारदेन स पार्थिवः। विधिवत्प्राञ्जलिस्तस्थावथैनं नारदोऽब्रवीत् ॥१४-६-११॥
devarṣiṇā samāgamya nāradena sa pārthivaḥ। vidhivatprāñjalistasthāvathainaṃ nārado'bravīt ॥14-6-11॥
[देवर्षिणा (devarṣiṇā) - by the divine sage; समागम्य (samāgamya) - having approached; नारदेन (nāradena) - by Nārada; स (sa) - he; पार्थिवः (pārthivaḥ) - the king; विधिवत् (vidhivat) - duly; प्राञ्जलिः (prāñjaliḥ) - with joined palms; तस्थौ (tasthau) - stood; अथ (atha) - then; एनम् (enam) - him; नारदः (nāradaḥ) - Nārada; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;]
(By the divine sage, having approached by Nārada, he, the king, duly with joined palms stood. Then him, Nārada said.)
After Nārada, the divine sage, arrived, the king stood with joined palms as was proper. Then Nārada spoke to him. (14-6-11)
राजर्षे नातिहृष्टोऽसि कच्चित्क्षेमं तवानघ। क्व गतोऽसि कुतो वेदमप्रीतिस्थानमागतम् ॥१४-६-१२॥
rājarṣe nāti-hṛṣṭo'si kaccit kṣemaṁ tavānagha। kva gato'si kuto vedam aprīti-sthānam āgatam ॥14-6-12॥
[राजर्षे (rājarṣe) - O royal sage; न (na) - not; अति (ati) - excessively; हृष्टः (hṛṣṭaḥ) - delighted; असि (asi) - are (you); कच्चित् (kaccit) - whether; क्षेमम् (kṣemam) - well-being; तव (tava) - of you; अनघ (anagha) - O sinless one; क्व (kva) - where; गतः (gataḥ) - gone; असि (asi) - are (you); कुतः (kutaḥ) - from where; वेदम् (vedam) - I know; अप्रीति (aprīti) - displeasure; स्थानम् (sthānam) - place; आगतम् (āgatam) - arrived; ॥१४-६-१२॥ (॥14-6-12॥) - ;]
(O royal sage, not excessively delighted are you; whether well-being (is there) for you, O sinless one. Where have you gone, from where do I know (you have) arrived at a place of displeasure. (14-6-12))
O royal sage, you do not seem excessively delighted; I hope all is well with you, O sinless one. Where have you gone, and from where do I know that you have arrived at a place of displeasure? (14-6-12)
श्रोतव्यं चेन्मया राजन्ब्रूहि मे पार्थिवर्षभ। व्यपनेष्यामि ते मन्युं सर्वयत्नैर्नराधिप ॥१४-६-१३॥
śrotavyaṃ cen mayā rājan brūhi me pārthivarṣabha। vyapaneṣyāmi te manyuṃ sarvayatnair narādhipa ॥14-6-13॥
[श्रोतव्यम् (śrotavyam) - to be heard; चेत् (cet) - if; मया (mayā) - by me; राजन् (rājan) - O king; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - tell; मे (me) - to me; पार्थिवर्षभ (pārthivarṣabha) - O best of kings; व्यपनेष्यामि (vyapaneṣyāmi) - I will remove; ते (te) - your; मन्यम् (manyum) - anger; सर्वयत्नैः (sarvayatnaiḥ) - by all efforts; नराधिप (narādhipa) - O ruler of men;]
(If something is to be heard by me, O king, tell me, O best of kings. I will remove your anger by all efforts, O ruler of men.)
If I must hear something, O king, tell it to me, O best of kings. I will remove your anger by every effort, O lord of men. (14-6-13)
एवमुक्तो मरुत्तस्तु नारदेन महर्षिणा। विप्रलम्भमुपाध्यायात्सर्वमेव न्यवेदयत् ॥१४-६-१४॥
evam-ukto maruttas tu nāradena maharṣiṇā। vipralambham upādhyāyāt sarvam eva nyavedayat॥14-6-14॥
[एवमुक्तः (evam-uktaḥ) - thus addressed; मरुत्तः (maruttaḥ) - Marutta; तु (tu) - but; नारदेन (nāradena) - by Nārada; महर्षिणा (maharṣiṇā) - by the great sage; विप्रलम्भम् (vipralambham) - deception; उपाध्यायात् (upādhyāyāt) - from the teacher; सर्वम् (sarvam) - everything; एव (eva) - indeed; न्यवेदयत् (nyavedayat) - he reported;]
(Thus addressed, Marutta, but by Nārada the great sage, deception from the teacher, everything indeed, he reported.)
Thus, having been addressed by Nārada the great sage, Marutta reported in full to him all the deception by his teacher. (14-6-14)
गतोऽस्म्यङ्गिरसः पुत्रं देवाचार्यं बृहस्पतिम्। यज्ञार्थमृत्विजं द्रष्टुं स च मां नाभ्यनन्दत ॥१४-६-१५॥
gato'smyaṅgirasaḥ putraṃ devācāryaṃ bṛhaspatim। yajñārthamṛtvijaṃ draṣṭuṃ sa ca māṃ nābhyanandat ॥14-6-15॥

(Having gone, I am to Aṅgiras' son, preceptor of the gods, Bṛhaspati, for the sake of sacrifice, priest, to see. He and me not welcomed.)
I went to see Bṛhaspati, the son of Aṅgiras and preceptor of the gods, as a priest for the sacrifice, but he did not welcome me. (14-6-15)
प्रत्याख्यातश्च तेनाहं जीवितुं नाद्य कामये। परित्यक्तश्च गुरुणा दूषितश्चास्मि नारद ॥१४-६-१६॥
pratyākhyātaś ca tenāhaṁ jīvitum nādya kāmaye। parityaktaś ca guruṇā dūṣitaś cāsmi nārada ॥14-6-16॥
[प्रत्याख्यातः (pratyākhyātaḥ) - rejected; च (ca) - and; तेन (tena) - by him; अहम् (aham) - I; जीवितुम् (jīvitum) - to live; न (na) - not; अद्य (adya) - today; कामये (kāmaye) - I desire; परित्यक्तः (parityaktaḥ) - abandoned; च (ca) - and; गुरुणा (guruṇā) - by the preceptor; दूषितः (dūṣitaḥ) - disgraced; च (ca) - and; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; नारद (nārada) - O Nārada;]
(Rejected and by him I to live not today I desire. Abandoned and by the preceptor, disgraced and I am, O Nārada.)
O Nārada, I have been rejected by him, and today I do not wish to live. Abandoned by the preceptor and disgraced, I am.
एवमुक्तस्तु राज्ञा स नारदः प्रत्युवाच ह। आविक्षितं महाराज वाचा सञ्जीवयन्निव ॥१४-६-१७॥
evam-uktas-tu rājñā sa nāradaḥ pratyuvāca ha। āvikṣitaṃ mahārāja vācā sañjīva-yann-iva ॥14-6-17॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - addressed; तु (tu) - but; राज्ञा (rājñā) - by the king; सः (saḥ) - he; नारदः (nāradaḥ) - Nārada; प्रत्युवाच (pratyuvāca) - replied; ह (ha) - certainly; आविक्षितम् (āvikṣitam) - Āvikṣita (proper name); महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; वाचा (vācā) - with words; सञ्जीवयन् (sañjīvayan) - reviving; इव (iva) - as if;]
(Thus addressed by the king, he, Nārada, indeed replied, reviving Āvikṣita, O great king, as if with words.)
Thus, when addressed by the king, Nārada replied, as though reviving Āvikṣita with his words, O great king. (14-6-17)
राजन्नङ्गिरसः पुत्रः संवर्तो नाम धार्मिकः। चङ्क्रमीति दिशः सर्वा दिग्वासा मोहयन्प्रजाः ॥१४-६-१८॥
rājan naṅgirasaḥ putraḥ samvarto nāma dhārmikaḥ। caṅkramīti diśaḥ sarvā digvāsā mohayan prajāḥ॥14-6-18॥
[राजन् (rājan) - O king; अङ्गिरसः (aṅgirasaḥ) - of Aṅgiras; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; संवर्तः (samvartaḥ) - Samvarta; नाम (nāma) - by name; धार्मिकः (dhārmikaḥ) - righteous; चङ्क्रमीति (caṅkramīti) - wanders; दिशः (diśaḥ) - directions; सर्वा (sarvā) - all; दिग्वासा (digvāsā) - clad with the quarters; मोहयन् (mohayan) - bewildering; प्रजाः (prajāḥ) - beings;]
(O king, the son of Aṅgiras, named Samvarta, righteous, wanders all the directions, clad with the quarters, bewildering beings.)
O king, Samvarta, the righteous son of Aṅgiras, wanders in all directions wearing only the quarters as his clothing, bewildering all beings. (14-6-18)
तं गच्छ यदि याज्यं त्वां न वाञ्छति बृहस्पतिः। प्रसन्नस्त्वां महाराज संवर्तो याजयिष्यति ॥१४-६-१९॥
taṁ gaccha yadi yājyaṁ tvāṁ na vāñchati bṛhaspatiḥ। prasannastvāṁ mahārāja saṁvarto yājayiṣyati॥14-6-19॥

(Go to him; if Bṛhaspati does not desire you as the one to be sacrificed for, O great king, gracious Saṁvarta will make you perform the sacrifice.)
Go to him; if Bṛhaspati does not wish to conduct your sacrifice, O great king, the gracious Saṁvarta will undertake your sacrificial rite. (14-6-19)

सञ्जीवितोऽहं भवता वाक्येनानेन नारद। पश्येयं क्व नु संवर्तं शंस मे वदतां वर ॥१४-६-२०॥
sañjīvito'ham bhavatā vākyenānena nārada। paśyeyaṃ kva nu saṃvartaṃ śaṃsa me vadatāṃ vara ॥14-6-20॥

(Revived I by you by this statement Nārada. May I see where indeed Saṃvarta; tell to me, O best of speakers.)
Nārada, I have been revived by this statement of yours. O best of speakers, tell me where Saṃvarta is so that I may see him. (14-6-20)
कथं च तस्मै वर्तेयं कथं मां न परित्यजेत्। प्रत्याख्यातश्च तेनापि नाहं जीवितुमुत्सहे ॥१४-६-२१॥
kathaṁ ca tasmai varteyaṁ kathaṁ māṁ na parityajet। pratyākhyātaś ca tenāpi nāhaṁ jīvitum utsahe ॥14-6-21॥
[कथं (kathaṁ) - how; च (ca) - and; तस्मै (tasmai) - to him; वर्तेयं (varteyaṁ) - should I behave; कथं (kathaṁ) - how; मां (māṁ) - me; न (na) - not; परित्यजेत् (parityajet) - (he) might abandon; प्रत्याख्यातः (pratyākhyātaḥ) - rejected; च (ca) - and; तेन (tena) - by him; अपि (api) - even; न (na) - not; अहम् (aham) - I; जीवितुम् (jīvitum) - to live; उत्सहे (utsahe) - I am able;]
(How and to him should I behave? How me not might (he) abandon? Rejected and by him even not I to live am able.)
How should I behave towards him, and how might he not abandon me? Having been rejected even by him, I am not able to live. (14-6-21)

उन्मत्तवेषं बिभ्रत्स चङ्क्रमीति यथासुखम्। वाराणसीं तु नगरीमभीक्ष्णमुपसेवते ॥१४-६-२२॥
unmattaveṣaṃ bibhrats ca caṅkramīti yathāsukham। vārāṇasīṃ tu nagarīm abhīkṣṇam upasevate ॥14-6-22॥
[उन्मत्तवेषं (unmattaveṣam) - appearance of a madman; बिभ्रत् (bibhrat) - wearing; स (sa) - he; चङ्क्रमीति (caṅkramīti) - wanders; यथासुखम् (yathāsukham) - as he pleases; वाराणसीम् (vārāṇasīm) - Vārāṇasī; तु (tu) - but; नगरीम् (nagarīm) - city; अभीक्ष्णम् (abhīkṣṇam) - constantly; उपसेवते (upasevate) - frequents;]
(He, wearing the appearance of a madman, wanders as he pleases. But he constantly frequents the city Vārāṇasī. (14-6-22))
He roams about in the guise of a madman, wandering as he wishes, but he repeatedly frequents the city of Vārāṇasī. (14-6-22)
तस्या द्वारं समासाद्य न्यसेथाः कुणपं क्वचित्। तं दृष्ट्वा यो निवर्तेत स संवर्तो महीपते ॥१४-६-२३॥
tasyā dvāraṃ samāsādya nyasethāḥ kuṇapaṃ kvacit। taṃ dṛṣṭvā yo nivarteta sa saṃvarto mahīpate ॥14-6-23॥
[तस्या (tasyā) - of her; द्वारं (dvāraṃ) - door; समासाद्य (samāsādya) - having approached; न्यसेथाः (nyasethāḥ) - you should place; कुणपं (kuṇapaṃ) - corpse; क्वचित् (kvacit) - somewhere; तं (taṃ) - that (corpse); दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; यः (yaḥ) - who; निवर्तेत (nivarteta) - would turn back; स (sa) - he; संवर्तः (saṃvartaḥ) - Saṃvarta (proper noun); महीपते (mahīpate) - O king;]
(Of her door having approached you should place corpse somewhere. That having seen who would turn back, he (is) Saṃvarta, O king.)
When you approach her door, place a corpse there somewhere. Whoever, having seen that, turns back—that is Saṃvarta, O king. (14-6-23)
तं पृष्ठतोऽनुगच्छेथा यत्र गच्छेत्स वीर्यवान्। तमेकान्ते समासाद्य प्राञ्जलिः शरणं व्रजेः ॥१४-६-२४॥
taṃ pṛṣṭhato'nugacchetā yatra gacchetsa vīryavān। tamekānte samāsādya prāñjaliḥ śaraṇaṃ vrajeḥ॥14-6-24॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; पृष्ठतः (pṛṣṭhataḥ) - from behind; अनुगच्छेथा (anugacchetā) - you should follow; यत्र (yatra) - where; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - he may go; सः (saḥ) - he; वीर्यवान् (vīryavān) - the powerful; तम् (tam) - him; एकान्ते (ekānte) - in solitude; समासाद्य (samāsādya) - having approached; प्राञ्जलिः (prāñjaliḥ) - with folded hands; शरणम् (śaraṇam) - shelter; व्रजेः (vrajeḥ) - you should seek;]
(Him from behind you should follow, where he may go, that powerful one. Him in solitude having approached, with folded hands, the shelter you should seek.)
You should follow him from behind wherever that powerful one may go. Having approached him in solitude, you should seek shelter with folded hands. (14-6-24)
पृच्छेत्त्वां यदि केनाहं तवाख्यात इति स्म ह। ब्रूयास्त्वं नारदेनेति सन्तप्त इव शत्रुहन् ॥१४-६-२५॥
pṛcchet tvāṁ yadi kena ahaṁ tava ākhyāta iti sma ha। brūyās tvaṁ nāradena iti santapta iva śatruhan ॥14-6-25॥
[पृच्छेत् (pṛcchet) - should ask; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; यदि (yadi) - if; केन (kena) - by whom; अहम् (aham) - I; तव (tava) - your; आख्यात (ākhyāta) - told; इति (iti) - thus; स्म (sma) - indeed; ह (ha) - truly; ब्रूयाः (brūyāḥ) - you should say; त्वम् (tvam) - you; नारदेन (nāradena) - by Nārada; इति (iti) - thus; सन्तप्त (santapta) - tormented; इव (iva) - as if; शत्रुहन् (śatruhan) - O destroyer of enemies;]
(Should ask you if by whom I your told thus indeed truly. You should say you by Nārada thus tormented as if, O destroyer of enemies.)
If I should ask you, 'By whom was I spoken about to you?'—you, as if tormented, O destroyer of enemies, should say, 'By Nārada.' (14-6-25)
स चेत्त्वामनुयुञ्जीत ममाभिगमनेप्सया। शंसेथा वह्निमारूढं मामपि त्वमशङ्कया ॥१४-६-२६॥
sa cet tvām anuyuñjīta mama abhigamana-ipsayā। śaṁsethā vahni-mārūḍham mām api tvam aśaṅkayā ॥14-6-26॥
[स (sa) - he; चेत् (cet) - if; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; अनुयुञ्जीत (anuyuñjīta) - he should pursue; मम (mama) - my; अभिगमनेप्सया (abhigamana-ipsayā) - with desire to approach; शंसेथा (śaṁsethā) - you should report; वह्निमारूढम् (vahni-mārūḍham) - mounted on fire; माम् (mām) - me; अपि (api) - also; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अशङ्कया (aśaṅkayā) - without suspicion;]
(He, if he should pursue you with the desire to approach me, you should report me also, mounted on fire, without suspicion.)
If he tries to follow you with the desire to reach me, you should, without any suspicion, say that I too have mounted the fire. (14-6-26)

sa tatheti pratiśrutya pūjayitvā ca nāradam. abhyanujñāya rājarṣir yayau vārāṇasīṃ purīm ॥14-6-27॥
[स (sa) - he; तथेति (tatheti) - "so be it" thus; प्रतिश्रुत्य (pratiśrutya) - having promised; पूजयित्वा (pūjayitvā) - having honored; च (ca) - and; नारदम् (nāradam) - Nārada; अभ्यनुज्ञाय (abhyanujñāya) - having been permitted; राजर्षि: (rājarṣiḥ) - the royal sage; ययौ (yayau) - went; वाराणसीम् (vārāṇasīm) - to Vārāṇasī; पुरीम् (purīm) - city;]
(He, having promised "so be it", and having honored Nārada, having been permitted, the royal sage went to the city of Vārāṇasī.)
He, having promised "so be it" and honored Nārada, and having received his permission, the royal sage went to the city of Vārāṇasī. (14-6-27)
तत्र गत्वा यथोक्तं स पुर्या द्वारे महायशाः। कुणपं स्थापयामास नारदस्य वचः स्मरन् ॥१४-६-२८॥
tatra gatvā yathoktaṃ sa puryā dvāre mahāyaśāḥ। kuṇapaṃ sthāpayāmāsa nāradasya vacaḥ smaran॥14-6-28॥

(There having gone, as stated, he at the city's gate, of great fame, the dead body placed, Nārada's word remembering.)
There, having gone as was instructed, he of great fame placed the dead body at the city gate, remembering the words of Nārada. (14-6-28)
यौगपद्येन विप्रश्च स पुरीद्वारमाविशत्। ततः स कुणपं दृष्ट्वा सहसा स न्यवर्तत ॥१४-६-२९॥
yaugapadyena vipraś ca sa purīdvāram āviśat। tataḥ sa kuṇapaṃ dṛṣṭvā sahasā sa nyavartata॥14-6-29॥
[यौगपद्येन (yaugapadyena) - simultaneously; in one and the same manner; at the same time; विप्रः (vipraḥ) - the brāhmaṇa; the learned one; च (ca) - and; सः (saḥ) - he; पुरीद्वारम् (purīdvāram) - the city-gate; आविशत् (āviśat) - entered; ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; then; सः (saḥ) - he; कुणपम् (kuṇapam) - dead body; carcass; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; सहसा (sahasā) - suddenly; सः (saḥ) - he; न्यवर्तत (nyavartata) - turned back; withdrew;]
(Simultaneously, the Brāhmaṇa and he entered the city-gate; then, having seen the dead body, he suddenly turned back.)
At the same time, the Brāhmaṇa and he entered the city gate; then, upon seeing the dead body, he suddenly turned back. (14-6-29)
स तं निवृत्तमालक्ष्य प्राञ्जलिः पृष्ठतोऽन्वगात्। आविक्षितो महीपालः संवर्तमुपशिक्षितुम् ॥१४-६-३०॥
sa taṃ nivṛttam ālakṣya prāñjaliḥ pṛṣṭhato'nvagāt। āvikṣito mahīpālaḥ saṃvartam upaśikṣitum॥14-6-30॥
[स (sa) - he; तं (taṃ) - him; निवृत्तम् (nivṛttam) - returned; आलक्ष्य (ālakṣya) - having perceived; प्राञ्जलिः (prāñjaliḥ) - with joined palms; पृष्ठतः (pṛṣṭhataḥ) - from behind; अन्वगात् (anvagāt) - followed; आविक्षितः (āvikṣitaḥ) - Āvikṣita; महीपालः (mahīpālaḥ) - king; संवर्तम् (saṃvartam) - Saṃvarta; उपशिक्षितुम् (upaśikṣitum) - to learn from;]
(He, having perceived him returned, with joined palms, from behind, followed; Āvikṣita, the king, Saṃvarta, to learn from.)
Āvikṣita, the king, having perceived Saṃvarta returning, followed him from behind with joined palms in order to learn from him. (14-6-30)
स एनं विजने दृष्ट्वा पांसुभिः कर्दमेन च। श्लेष्मणा चापि राजानं ष्ठीवनैश्च समाकिरत् ॥१४-६-३१॥
sa enaṃ vijane dṛṣṭvā pāṃsubhiḥ kardamena ca| śleṣmaṇā cāpi rājānaṃ ṣṭhīvanaiś ca samākirat ॥14-6-31॥
[स (sa) (sa) - he; एनम् (enam) (enam) - him; विजने (vijane) (vijane) - in solitude; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; पांसुभिः (pāṃsubhiḥ) (pāṃsubhiḥ) - with dust; कर्दमेन (kardamena) (kardamena) - with mud; च (ca) (ca) - and; श्लेष्मणा (śleṣmaṇā) (śleṣmaṇā) - with phlegm; च (ca) (ca) - and; अपि (api) (api) - also; राजानम् (rājānam) (rājānam) - the king; ष्ठीवनैः (ṣṭhīvanaiḥ) (ṣṭhīvanaiḥ) - with spit; च (ca) (ca) - and; समाकिरत् (samākirat) (samākirat) - he sprinkled;]
(He, having seen him in solitude, with dust, with mud, and also with phlegm, with spit, and (thus) the king he sprinkled.)
He, having seen the king alone, sprinkled him with dust, mud, phlegm, and spit. (14-6-31)
स तथा बाध्यमानोऽपि संवर्तेन महीपतिः। अन्वगादेव तमृषिं प्राञ्जलिः सम्प्रसादयन् ॥१४-६-३२॥
sa tathā bādhyamāno'pi saṁvartena mahīpatiḥ. anvagādeva tam ṛṣiṁ prāñjaliḥ samprasādayan ॥14-6-32॥
[स (sa) - he; तथा (tathā) - thus; बाध्यमानः (bādhyamānaḥ) - being afflicted; अपि (api) - even; संवर्तेन (saṁvartena) - by Saṁvarta; महीपतिः (mahīpatiḥ) - the king; अन्वगात् (anvagāt) - followed; एव (eva) - indeed; तम् (tam) - him; ऋषिं (ṛṣiṁ) - sage; प्राञ्जलिः (prāñjaliḥ) - with joined palms; सम् (sam) - completely; प्रसादयन् (prasādayan) - conciliating;]
(He, thus being afflicted even by Saṁvarta, the king, indeed followed him, the sage, with joined palms, completely conciliating.)
Thus, even while being afflicted by Saṁvarta, the king followed the sage with joined palms, earnestly seeking his favor. (14-6-32)
ततो निवृत्य संवर्तः परिश्रान्त उपाविशत्। शीतलच्छायमासाद्य न्यग्रोधं बहुशाखिनम् ॥१४-६-३३॥
tato nivṛtya saṁvartaḥ pariśrānta upāviśat। śītalacchāyam āsādya nyagrodhaṁ bahuśākhinaṁ ॥14-6-33॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; निवृत्य (nivṛtya) - after withdrawing; संवर्तः (saṁvartaḥ) - Saṁvarta; परिश्रान्तः (pariśrāntaḥ) - exhausted; उपाविशत् (upāviśat) - sat down; शीतलच्छायम् (śītalacchāyam) - cool-shaded; आसाद्य (āsādya) - having reached; न्यग्रोधम् (nyagrodham) - a banyan tree; बहुशाखिनम् (bahuśākhinaṁ) - with many branches;]
(Then, after withdrawing, Saṁvarta, exhausted, sat down. Having reached the cool-shaded banyan tree with many branches.)
Then Saṁvarta, having withdrawn and exhausted, sat down beneath a banyan tree with many branches and cool shade. (14-6-33)
